OBJECTIVE: To compare the predictive validity of learning and retention measures from the picture version of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test with Immediate Recall (pFCSRT + IR) for identifying incident mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: Learning was defined by the sum of free recall (FR) and retention by delayed free recall (DFR) tested 15-20 min later. Totally, 1422 Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) participants (mean age 69.6 years, 54% male, mean 16.7 years of education) without dementia or MCI received the pFCSRT + IR at baseline and were followed longitudinally. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the effect of baseline learning and retention on risk of MCI. RESULTS: In total, 187 participants developed MCI over a median of 8.1 years of follow-up. FR and DFR each predicted incident MCI adjusting for age, sex, and education. Also, each independently predicted incident MCI in the presence of the other with similar effect sizes: around 20% decrease in the hazard of MCI corresponding to one standard deviation increase in FR or DFR. CONCLUSION: The practice of preferring retention over learning to predict incident MCI should be reconsidered. The decision to include retention should be guided by time constraints and patient burden.

OBJECTIVE: To examine trajectories of declines in learning and retention during the predementia phase of Alzheimer's disease (AD) using the picture version of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test with Immediate Recall (pFCSRT+IR). METHOD: Learning was defined by the sum of free recall over three test trials. Retention was defined in two ways: by delayed free recall (DFR) and by savings; DFR adjusted for learning. The performances of 217 incident AD cases from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) were aligned based on the time that AD was first diagnosed. The predementia phase of learning and retention decline was assessed using change point models in which cognitive trajectories are described by a series of linear components with knots delineating times of accelerating decline. RESULTS: Trajectories for both learning and DFR had two change points: the first at 6.58 (95% confidence intervals (CI): 6.56, 6.60) to 7.29 (95% CI: 6.13, 8.46) years before diagnosis followed by gradual decline over the next 4 years, and a second acceleration of decline 1.89 (0.56, 3.24) to 2.93 (95% CI: 1.56, 4.30) years before diagnosis. The change points for DFR were not significantly earlier in the predementia phase than the change points for learning. Savings had one change point, 5.3 (95% CI: 3.56, 7.04) years before diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Both learning and DFR showed similar profiles of decline in the years prior to the clinical diagnosis of AD. When delayed recall was adjusted for initial learning, the measure was less sensitive to early disease. (JINS, 2019, 25, 699-705).

OBJECTIVE: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with prospective memory (PM) deficits, which may increase the risk of poor functional/health outcomes such as medication non-adherence. This study examined the potential benefits of selective reminding to enhance PM functioning in persons with MS. METHOD: Twenty-one participants with MS and 22 healthy adults (HA) underwent a neuropsychological battery including a Selective Reminding PM (SRPM) experimental procedure. Participants were randomly assigned to either: (1) a selective reminding condition in which participants learn (to criterion) eight prospective memory tasks in a Selective Reminding format; or (2) a single trial encoding condition (1T). RESULTS: A significant interaction was demonstrated, with MS participants receiving greater benefit than HAs from the SR procedure in terms of PM performance. Across diagnostic groups, participants in the SR conditions (vs. 1T conditions) demonstrated significantly better PM performance. Individuals with MS were impaired relative to HAs in the 1T condition, but performance was statistically comparable in the SR condition. CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary study suggests that selective reminding can be used to enhance PM cue detection and retrieval in MS. The extent to which selective reminding of PM is effective in naturalistic settings and for health-related behaviours in MS remains to be determined.

OBJECTIVE: Temporary binding (TB) is sensitive and specific to Alzheimer's Disease (AD), is not affected by age, repeated testing or level of education. Hence, TB is useful to assess patients with very different socio-cultural backgrounds. However, the current computerised version of the test is not suitable for use in clinical settings. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a clinically friendly version of the TB task results in overlapping outcomes compared to the computerised version. METHODS: A newly devised Flash-card version of the TB assesses temporary visual binding for arrays of stimuli such as shapes (polygons), colours, or combinations of shapes and colours. In Experiment 1, this version was compared with the laboratory computerised version. In Experiment 2, 33 AD patients and 33 matched controls, recruited from various geriatric centres in Romania, were assessed with the new TB test and with Free and Cued Selective Reminding test. RESULTS: The results with the Flash-card version of the TB test were comparable to those obtained with the computerised version. TB was not affected by age, but it was impaired by AD. The sensitivity and specificity of the new TB test were found to be greater than those achieved by a Selective Reminding test. CONCLUSIONS: TB deficits may be conceived as a fundamental marker of AD. The Flash-card version is suitable for clinical use also in primary care facilities and in intervention trials, requires minimal training for administration and scoring, is quick to administer, non-invasive, inexpensive, and facilitates cross-cultural studies. INTRODUCTION: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of the free and cued selective reminding test (FCSRT) for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: We enrolled 187 consecutive MCI outpatients from a memory clinic that were evaluated at baseline and every 6 to 12 months through an extensive clinical and neuropsychological protocol. For each test, measures of diagnostic accuracy were obtained. To improve the overall specificity of the neuropsychological battery, we also used the diagnostic tests in parallel combination. The association between FCSRT indexes and AD was tested through proportional hazard regression models with other dementia subtypes as competing event. Laplace regression was used to model time-to-AD diagnosis as a function of FCSRT indexes. RESULTS: The area under the curve of the FCSRT indexes ranged from 0.69 (95% CI: 0.62-0.76) to 0.76 (95% CI: 0.70-0.82). The specificity peaked up to 100% when we combined the category fluency test with the delayed total recall index of the FCSRT. Participants who tested positive at the FCSRT, as compared with those with negative tests, presented a twofold to fivefold higher risk of developing AD (median follow-up time 2.5 years; p < 0.001) and were diagnosed with AD 2-3 years earlier (p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: The FCSRT assessment suite shows the best predictive performance in detecting AD in people with MCI. These findings might help to reliably and timely identify people at higher risk of AD that is crucial both for properly selecting participants to clinical trials and to fine tune an effective and patient-centered care.

Memory deficits are common in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) even without the presence of a frank dementia. These memory deficits have traditionally been attributed to inability of patients to retrieve information from long-term memory, referred to as the "retrieval failure hypothesis." However, some studies additionally document problems in recognition memory, noted to be inconsistent with the retrieval failure hypothesis. Given the neuroanatomical abnormalities observed in the hippocampus of PD patients and the role of the hippocampus in learning new information, the current study was designed to specifically examine learning abilities in a nondemented PD sample through the application of a learning paradigm, the Open Trial Selective Reminding Test. We examined 27 patients with PD without dementia and 27 age-, gender-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) with a neuropsychological test battery designed to assess new learning and memory. Results indicated a significant difference between the groups in terms of their ability to learn a list of 10 semantically related words. However, once the groups were equated on learning abilities, no significant difference was noted between the PD and HC participants in recall or recognition of the newly learned material. The memory deficit observed in nondemented PD patients is thus largely the result of a deficit in learning new information. This finding should be used to guide treatment for memory deficits in persons with PD, and future research should seek to identify novel means of improving new learning in this population.

BACKGROUND: SOMI (Stages of Objective Memory Impairment) is a novel classification that identifies six stages of memory decline in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) using the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT). However, the relationship between SOMI stages and brain metabolism remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the metabolic correlates of SOMI stages using FDG-PET in Mild Cognitive Impairment due to AD (MCI-AD) and early AD patients. METHODS: One hundred twenty-nine-patients (99 aMCI-AD and 30 AD), and 42 healthy controls (HCs) (MMSE = 29.2 ± .8; age:69.1 ± 8.6 years; education:10.7 ± 3.8 years) who underwent an extensive neuropsychological battery including FCSRT and brain FDG-PET were enrolled. According to their clinical relevance and available sample sizes, SOMI-4 (N = 24 subjects; MMSE score:26.6 ± 2.6: age:75.4 ± 3.2; education:9.9 ± 4.5) and SOMI-5 groups (N = 97; MMSE:25.3 ± 2.6; age:73.9 ± 5.8; education:9.4 ± 4.1) were investigated. RESULTS: Compared to HCs, SOMI-4 showed hypometabolism in the precuneus, medial temporal gyrus bilaterally, right pecuneus and angular gyrus. SOMI-5 exhibited broader hypometabolism, extending to the left posterior cingulate and medial frontal gyrus bilaterally. The conjunction analysis revealed overlapping areas in the precuneus, medial temporal gyrus bilaterally, and in the right angular gyrus and cuneus. The disjunction analysis identified SOMI-5 specific hypometabolism encompassing left inferior temporal gyrus, uncus and parahippocampal gyrus, and medial frontal gyrus bilaterally (p < .001, p-value (FWE) < .05). DISCUSSION: SOMI-4 relates to posterior hypometabolism, while SOMI-5 to more extensive hypometabolism further encompassing frontal cortices, suggesting SOMI as a biologically relevant classification system of memory decline. CONCLUSION: Memory decline staged with SOMI is associated with hypometabolism spreading in amnesic MCI-AD/AD, suggesting its usefulness as a clinical marker of increasing neurodegeneration.

Background: The asymptomatic at-risk phase might be the optimal time-window to establish clinically meaningful endpoints in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Objective: We investigated whether, compared with the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT), the Memory Binding Test (MBT) can anticipate the diagnosis of emergent subtle episodic memory (EM) deficits to an at-risk phase. Methods: Five-year longitudinal FCSRT and MBT scores from 45 individuals matched for age, education, and gender, were divided into 3 groups of 15 subjects: Aß-/controls, Aß+/stable, and Aß+/progressors (preclinical-AD). The MBT adds an associative memory component (binding), particularly sensitive to subtle EM decline. Results: In the MBT, EM decline started in the Aß+/progressors (preclinical-AD) up to 4 years prior to diagnosis in delayed free recall (FR), followed by decline in binding-associated scores 1 year later. Conversely, in the FCSRT, EM-decline began later, up to 3 years prior to diagnosis, in the same group on both immediate and delayed versions of FR, while on total recall (TR) and intrusions decline started only 1 year prior to diagnosis. Conclusions: The MBT seems more sensitive than the FCSRT for early EM-decline detection, regarding the year of diagnosis and the number of scores showing AD-linked EM deficits (associated with the AD-characteristic amnesic hippocampal syndrome). Considering the MBT as a detection tool of early subtle EM-decline in an asymptomatic at-risk phase, and the FCSRT as a classification tool of stages of EM-decline from a preclinical phase, these tests ought to potentially become complementary diagnostic tools that can foster therapies to delay cognitive decline. Dementia in Latin America is a crucial public health problem. Identifying brief cognitive screening (BCS) tools for the primary care setting is crucial, particularly for illiterate individuals. We evaluated tool performance characteristics and validated the free and total recall sections of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test-Picture version (FCSRT-Picture) to discriminate between 63 patients with early Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD), 60 amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and 64 cognitively healthy Peruvian individuals with illiteracy from an urban area. Clinical, functional, and cognitive assessments were performed. FCSRT-Picture performance was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. The mean ± standard deviation scores were 7.7 ± 1.0 in ADD, 11.8 ± 1.6 in aMCI, and 29.5 ± 1.8 in controls. The FCSRT-Picture had better performance characteristics for distinguishing controls from aMCI compared with several other BCS tools, but similar characteristics between controls and early ADD. The FCSRT-Picture is a reliable BCS tool for illiteracy in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychological assessment is still the basis for the first evaluation of patients with cognitive complaints. The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) generates several indices that could have different accuracy in the differential diagnosis between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other disorders. OBJECTIVE: In a consecutive series of naturalistic patients, the accuracy of the FCSRT indices in differentiating patients with either mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD or AD dementia from other competing conditions was evaluated. METHODS: We evaluated the accuracy of the seven FCSRT indices in differentiating patients with AD from other competing conditions in 434 consecutive outpatients, either at the MCI or at the early dementia stage. We analyzed these data through the receiver operating characteristics curve, and we then generated the odds-ratio map of the two indices with the best discriminative value between pairs of disorders. RESULTS: The immediate and the delayed free total recall, the immediate total recall, and the index of sensitivity of cueing were the most useful indices and allowed to distinguish AD from dementia with Lewy bodies and psychiatric conditions with very high accuracy. Accuracy was instead moderate in distinguishing AD from behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, vascular cognitive impairment, and other conditions. CONCLUSION: By using odd-ratio maps and comparison-customized cut-off scores, we confirmed that the FCSRT represents a useful tool to characterize the memory performance of patients with MCI and thus to assist the clinician in the diagnosis process, though with different accuracy values depending on the clinical hypothesis.

Many American and Dutch adolescents use marijuana regularly. There is concern that such use may impair cognitive function more in adolescents than adults. We examined effects of regular marijuana use on long-term memory and perseveration among American and Dutch adolescents. We administered Buschke's Selective Reminding Test (BSRT) to assess long-term memory and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) to assess perseveration in male teenagers. Usable test data were obtained for 12 American marijuana users, 13 American controls, 9 Dutch marijuana users, and 12 Dutch controls. In BSRT, users showed lower overall long-term storage than controls (adjusted means ± SE's for numbers of words per trial of 9.4 ± 0.2, 13.4 ± 0.3, 11.7 ± 0.2, and 12.4 ± 0.2 for American users, Dutch users, American controls, and Dutch controls, respectively). Marijuana was associated with memory effects only in American, not Dutch, users. Bivariate Pearson correlations for American and Dutch users combined showed associations of lower total recall with more uses in the previous year and lifetime (r = -0.61 and r = -0.53, respectively); and more perseverative errors with more uses in the previous year (r = 0.55). Some findings were consistent with the possibility that regular adolescent marijuana use causes deficits in cognition, especially memory. However, a causal interpretation cannot be inferred from our findings and is challenging to reconcile with the observation of memory deficits only in American users. Our study was novel in examining the influence of nationality on marijuana's cognitive effects. More studies of this topic should compare effects across nationalities or cultures.

INTRODUCTION: A picture version of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) would assist in the assessment of memory function in patients with low levels of schooling. A shortened version would improve the test's applicability. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the diagnostic usefulness of a shortened picture version of the FCSRT for distinguishing patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) from controls, without excluding participants with a low level of schooling. METHODS: Phase I study of a diagnostic evaluation (convenience sampling; pre-test prevalence 50%). A blinded researcher independently administered the FCSRT to 30 patients with aMCI and 30 controls matched for age, sex, level of schooling and literacy, using images and omitting the usual 30-minutes delayed recall item. Three variables were recorded: free recall, total recall, and cue efficiency. Diagnostic accuracy was calculated using receiver operating characteristic curves and the area under the curve. The Youden index was used to identify optimal cut-off points. RESULTS: Of all participants, 41.7% had not completed primary education. There were no differences between groups as regards sociodemographic variables. Area under the curve was excellent for free recall (0.99), total recall (0.95), and cue efficiency (0.93). The optimal cut-off points were 21/22, 43/44, and < 0.77, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary analysis shows that a shortened picture version of the FCSRT may be useful and applicable for the diagnosis of aMCI without excluding individuals with a low level of schooling.

INTRODUCTION: To assess the relationship between memory performance defined by the Stages of Objective Memory Impairment (SOMI) system and the Alzheimer's disease (AD) ATN (amyloid beta [A], pathologic tau [T], and neurodegeneration [N]) biomarker system. METHODS: We used data from the Harvard Aging Brain Study cohort to estimate the level of ATN biomarkers: amyloid beta (C-Pittsburgh compound B-positron emission tomography [PET]), tau (F-18-flortaucipir [FTP] PET), and neurodegeneration (magnetic resonance imaging volumetrics). We assessed the cross-sectional relationship of SOMI classification with global amyloid levels, entorhinal and inferior temporal tau deposition, and hippocampal atrophy. RESULTS: Participants with both memory storage and retrieval deficits (SOMI-3, -4) had smaller hippocampal volumes and higher entorhinal and inferior temporal tau burden than participants with no memory impairment (SOMI-0) or mild retrieval difficulty (SOMI-1). Amyloid burden did not differ among SOMI stages. DISCUSSION: This pilot supports the close relationship between tau pathology and memory impairment across the AD continuum.  SOMI may be useful to determine eligibility for randomized controlled trials prior to the assessment of biomarker status.

BACKGROUND: The Memory Associative Test TMA-93 examines visual relational binding, characteristically affected in early-AD stages. OBJECTIVE: We aim to validate the TMA-93 by biomarkers determination and compare its diagnostic characteristics with the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a Biobank database. Patients' records initially consulted for memory complaints, scored MMSE≥22, had TMA-93 and FCSRT tested, and AD biomarker determination (Amyloid-PET or CSF), either positive or negative, were selected. As cutoffs, we considered the 10-percentile for TMA-93 (P10/TMA-93), and "total free recall" (TFR) 21/22, total recall (TR) 43/44, and Cued Index < 0.77 for FCSRT from previous Spanish validation and normative studies. Diagnostic utilities were calculated using ROC curves and compared by the DeLong method. We studied if one test improved the other test's prediction, following a forward stepwise logistic regression model. RESULTS: We selected 105 records: 64 "positive" and 41 "negative" biomarkers. TMA-93 total score diagnostic utility (AUC = 0.72; 95%CI:0.62-0.82) was higher than those of the FCSRT: TFR (AUC = 0.70; 95%CI: 0.60-0.80), TR (AUC = 0.63; 95%CI:0.53-0.74), and Cued Index (AUC = 0.62; 95%CI:0.52-0.73). The P10/TMA-93 cutoff showed 86%sensitivity, similar to that of the most sensitive FCSRT cutoff (TFR21/22, 89%) and 29%specificity, lower than that of the most specific FCSRT cutoff (Cued Index < 0.77, 57%). 32.8%of the positive-biomarker group scored above CI/0.77 but below p10TMA-93. The addition of TMA-93 total score to FCSRT variables improved significantly the biomarkers results' prediction. CONCLUSION: TMA-93 demonstrated "reasonable" diagnostic utility, similar to FCSRT, for discriminating AD biomarker groups. TMA-93 total score improved the AD biomarker result prediction when added to FCSRT variables.

BACKGROUND: The ultimate validation of a clinical marker for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is its association with AD neuropathology. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical measures that predict pathology, we evaluated the relationships of the picture version of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (pFCSRT + IR), the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), and the Clinical Dementia Rating scale Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB) to Braak stage. METHODS: 315 cases from the clinicopathologic series at the Knight Alzheimer's Disease Research Center were classified according to Braak stage. Boxplots of each predictor were compared to identify the earliest stage at which decline was observed and ordinal logistic regression was used to predict Braak stage. RESULTS: Looking at the assessment closest to death, free recall scores were lower in individuals at Braak stage III versus Braak stages 0 and I (combined) while MMSE and CDR scores for individuals did not differ from Braak stages 0/I until Braak stage IV. The sum of free recall and total recall scores independently predicted Braak stage and had higher predictive validity than MMSE and CDR-SB in models including all three. CONCLUSION: pFCSRT + IR scores may be more sensitive to early pathological changes than either the CDR-SB or the MMSE.

BACKGROUND: The ultimate validation of a clinical marker for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is its association with AD neuropathology. OBJECTIVE: To examine how well the Stages of Objective Memory Impairment (SOMI) system predicts intermediate/high AD neuropathologic change and extent of neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) pathology defined by Braak stage, in comparison to the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) Scale sum of boxes (CDR-SB). METHODS: 251 well-characterized participants from the Knight ADRC clinicopathologic series were classified into SOMI stage at their last assessment prior to death using the free recall and total recall scores from the picture version of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test with Immediate Recall (pFCSRT + IR). Logistic regression models assessed the predictive validity of SOMI and CDR-SB for intermediate/high AD neuropathologic change. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis evaluated the discriminative validity of SOMI and CDR-SB for AD pathology. Ordinal logistic regression was used to predict Braak stage using SOMI and CDR-SB in separate and joint models. RESULTS: The diagnostic accuracy of SOMI for AD diagnosis was similar to that of the CDR-SB (AUC: 85%versus 83%). In separate models, both SOMI and CDR-SB predicted Braak stage. In a joint model SOMI remained a significant predictor of Braak stage but CDR-SB did not. CONCLUSION: SOMI provides a neuropathologically validated staging system for episodic memory impairment in the AD continuum and should be useful in predicting tau positivity based on its association with Braak stage.

Introduction: Memory alterations are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients but the mechanisms involved in these deficits remain poorly understood. The study aims to explore the profile of episodic memory deficits in non-demented early PD patients. Methods: We obtained neurological, cognitive and behavioral data from 114 PD patients and 41 healthy controls (HC). PD participants were grouped as normal cognition (PD-NC) and mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) according to the Level II criteria of the Movement Disorders Society Task Force (MDS-TF). We evaluate the performance amongst groups on an episodic memory task using the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT). Additionally, gray matter volume (GMV) voxel based morphometry, and mean diffusivity (MD) analyses were conducted in a subset of patients to explore the structural brain correlates of FCSRT performance. Results: Performance on all subscores of the FCSRT was significantly worse in PD-MCI than in PD-NC and HC. Delayed total recall (DTR) subscore was the best at differentiating PD-NC from PD-MCI. Using crosstabulation, DTR allowed identification of PD-MCI patients with an accuracy of 80%. Delayed free and cued recall was associated with decreased GMV and increased MD in multiple fronto-temporal and parietal areas. Conclusion: Encoding and retrieval deficits are a main characteristic of PD-MCI and are associated with structural damage in temporal, parietal and prefrontal areas.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have emphasized the harmful impact of binge drinking on several cognitive functions, including memory. However, the exact nature of the memory processes involved is still unknown. The present study was designed to assess verbal working memory and verbal episodic memory, especially its encoding, storage and retrieval processes, in binge drinking to identify the processes impacted by this behavior. METHODS: Participants were 48 community-recruited college students aged 18-25 years and categorized as either binge drinkers (BDs) or social drinkers (SDs). They were assessed with (a) subtests of the Wechsler scale (digit span, letter-number sequencing) measuring verbal working memory, and (b) a modified version of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT), which measures verbal episodic memory functioning in various conditions of encoding (controlled) and recollection (free recall, cued recall, and recognition). RESULTS: Verbal working memory was unaffected by binge drinking, whereas verbal episodic memory performances were reduced. In particular, analysis of the modified FCSRT scores suggested that BDs had less proficient storage and retrieval processes. Furthermore, correlational analyses indicated that the proficiency of these memory components was negatively correlated with several indicators of binge drinking behavior. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that binge drinking behavior affects the storage and recollection processes of verbal episodic memory. The academic failure described in binge drinkers could be partly related to this harmful effect. Our results on the negative impact of binge drinking on memory should be used to develop information campaigns targeting students.

BACKGROUND: Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) is a reliable cognitive marker for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the identification of neuropsychological tests sensitive to the early signs of AD pathology is crucial both in research and clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to ascertain the ability of FCSRT in predicting the amyloid load as determined from amyloid PET imaging (Amy-PET) in patients with cognitive disorders. METHODS: For our purpose, 79 patients (71 MCI, 8 mild dementia) underwent a complete workup for dementia, including the FCSRT assessment and a [18F]florbetaben PET scan. FCSRT subitem scores were used as predictors in different binomial regression models. RESULTS: Immediate free recall and delayed free recall were the best predictors overall in the whole sample; whereas in patients <76 years, all models further improved with immediate total recall (ITR) and Index of Sensitivity of Cueing (ISC) resulting the most accurate in anticipating Amy-PET results, with a likelihood of being Amy-PET positive greater than 85% for ITR and ISC scores of less than 25 and 0.5, respectively. CONCLUSION: FCSRT proved itself to be a valid tool in dementia diagnosis, also being able to correlate with amyloid pathology. The possibility to predict Amy-PET results through a simple and reliable neuropsychological test might be helpful for clinicians in the dementia field, adding value to a paper and pencil tool compared to most costly biomarkers.

The purpose of this study was to provide normative data for a Flemish version of the Buschke Selective Reminding Test (SRT). The SRT allows for the simultaneous analysis of several components of verbal memory, such as short and long term retrieval. The Flemish SRT was administered to 3257 neurologically healthy adults (1627 men and 1630 women, age range = 18-94 years). Effects of age, sex and education on SRT performance were assessed. Results indicate that SRT performance decreased with age and that this decline accelerated in men compared to women. Furthermore, an effect of education was found favoring participants who completed a higher education. Normative data quantified through percentile ranks and stratified by age, sex and education level are provided.
