RESUMEN

Camellia fascicularis has important ornamental, medicinal, and food value. It also has tremendous potential for exploiting bioactivities. However, the bioactivities of secondary metabolites in C. fascicularis have not been reported. The structures of compounds were determined by spectral analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) combined with the available literature on secondary metabolites of C. fascicularis leaves. In this study, 15 compounds were identified, including 5 flavonoids (1-5), a galactosylglycerol derivative (6), a terpenoid (7), 4 lignans (8-11), and 4 phenolic acids (12-15). Compounds 6-7 and 9-12 were isolated from the genus Camellia for the first time. The remaining compounds were also isolated from C. fascicularis for the first time. Evaluation of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities revealed that compounds 5 and 8-11 exhibited stronger antioxidant activity than the positive drug ascorbic acid, while compounds 7, 13, and 15 showed similar activity to ascorbic acid. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibacterial activity for compounds 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 against Pseudomonas aeruginosa was comparable to that of the positive control drug tetracycline at a concentration of 62.50 µg/mL; other secondary metabolites inhibited Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus at concentrations ranging from 125-250 µg/mL.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Mentha longifolia L. is a perennial plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family that has a wide distribution in the world. M. longifolia has many applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its terpenoid and phenolic compounds. The phytochemical profile and biological activity of plants are affected by their genetics and habitat conditions. In the present study, the content, constituents and antifungal activity of the essential oil extracted from 20 accessions of M. longifolia collected from different regions of Iran and Iraq countries were evaluated. RESULTS: The essential oil content of the accessions varied between 1.54 ± 0.09% (in the Divandarreh accession) to 5.49 ± 0.12% (in the Khabat accession). Twenty-seven compounds were identified in the essential oils of the studied accessions, which accounted for 85.5-99.61% of the essential oil. The type and amount of dominant compounds in the essential oil were different depending on the accession. Cluster analysis of accessions based on essential oil compounds grouped them into three clusters. The first cluster included Baziyan, Boukan, Sarouchavah, Taghtagh, Darbandikhan, Isiveh and Harir. The second cluster included Khabat, Kounamasi, Soni and Mahabad, and other accessions were included in the third cluster. Significant correlations were observed between the essential oil content and components with the climatic and soil conditions of the habitats. The M. longifolia essential oil indicated antifungal activity against Fusarium solani in both methods used. In all studied accessions, the fumigation method compared to the contact method was more able to control mycelia growth. In both methods, the inhibition percentage of essential oil on mycelia growth increased with an increase in essential oil concentration. Significant correlations were found between the essential oil components and the inhibition percentage of mycelium growth. CONCLUSION: The studied M. longifolia accessions showed significant differences in terms of the essential oil content and components. Differences in phytochemical profile of accessions can be due to their genetic or habitat conditions. The distance of the accessions in the cluster was not in accordance with their geographical distance, which indicates the more important role of genetic factors compared to habitat conditions in separating accessions. The antifungal activity of essential oils was strongly influenced by the essential oil quality and concentration, as well as the application method. Determining and introducing the elite accession in this study can be different depending on the breeder's aims, such as essential oil content, desired chemical composition, or antifungal activity.

RESUMEN

Thirty-three porcelain shards (28 Ru ware and 5 Ru-type ware) unearthed from Qinglingsi kiln and 31 celadon fragments from Zhanggongxiang kiln were studied systematically for tracing their correlation and difference in glaze and body characteristics through a variety of characterisation methods. Samples without HF corrosion were applied to achieve the microstructure and composition details by SEM and TEM. Results exhibited that there were certain similarities between Ru ware, Ru-type ware and Zhanggongxiang kiln celadon in glaze colour and thickness, body features, fracture structure; however, they showed obvious differences in body thickness, chemical composition of glaze and body, phase constituents and microstructure of glaze. Plentiful needle-like diopside were widely distributed in Zhanggongxiang kiln celadon glazes, while this type of crystals was only existed in few Ru and Ru-type ware glazes with small content. Besides, a large amount of residual quartz was present over the Ru ware glazes, which could have relation to the incorporation of agate. The liquid-liquid phase separation structure (Ca-rich droplets and Si-rich matrix) was generated within the interspaces of anorthite clusters or around the brims of anorthite needles or columns. The occurrence of phase separation was generally accompanied by Al2 O3 consumption, but suppressed in the areas far from anorthite due to the rise of Al2 O3 content, indicating that Al2 O3 was the most sensitive constituent for this glaze behaviour. The distinguished size, shape and distribution of phase-separated droplets or interconnected structures were closely associated with the scale and crowding level of anorthite crystallisation.

RESUMEN

Pyropia spp. seaweeds are delicious and nutritious red algae widely consumed for a long history. However, due to the non-digestibility of cell wall components by the human intestinal tract, the bioaccessibility of the intracellular bioactive compounds is low. The current industrial processing of Pyropia spp. food by drying and roasting cannot break down the cell wall; however, studies indicate that fermentation of Pyropia spp. by food-derived microorganisms is an efficient processing method to solve this problem. This paper reviews research on the fermentation of Pyropia spp., including the manufacturing process, alterations in chemical composition, flavor properties, bioactivities, and mechanisms. Furthermore, the limitations and opportunities for developing Pyropia spp. fermentation food are explored. Studies demonstrated that key metabolites of fermented Pyropia spp. were degraded polysaccharides, released phenolic compounds and flavonoids, and formed amino acids, which possessed bioactivities such as antioxidant, anti-glycation, anti-diabetic, lipid metabolism regulation beneficial to human health. The increased bioactivities implied the promoted bioaccessibility of intracellular components. Notably, fermentation positively contributed to the safety of Pyropia spp. food. In conclusion, benefits in nutrition, flavor, bioactivity, and safety suggest that fermentation technology has a promising future for application in Pyropia spp. food industry.

RESUMEN

Bardawil Lake is a unique aquatic ecosystem that provides a habitat for various fish and other marine organisms. This study aimed to analyze the quality of fish species to prove that this lake is free of pollution, not other Egyptian lakes, due to the accumulation of some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn) in various tissues of fish species that were caught from this lake. Thirty-five fish samples were caught during the Spring of 2018 from seven different species: Mugil cephalus, Liza auratus, Sparus aurata, Dicentrarchus labrax, Siganus rivulatus, Anguilla angilla, and Solae solea. The Association of Official Analytical Chemists methods using a spectrophotometer determined the biochemical composition. In contrast, atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was employed to determine the heavy metals expressed by µg/g wet weight. Results exposed that the accumulation of essential micronutrient (Cu, Zn) content was higher than toxic elements (Cd & Pb) in muscles in order to Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. Muscles < gills < liver in order of all metals except Pb with order muscles < liver < gills. The metals studied in the muscles were lower than those set by the WHO and the EU standards. The carcinogenic risk with lower allowable limits of 1 × 10-6 to 1 × 10-4 in both normal and high consumption groups; target and total target hazard quotients (THQ & HI) in muscles were < 1. The biochemical composition level was highest in the liver, except for protein, which was highest in muscle for all fish species. There is no evidence of harmful contaminants in the muscular tissue of the fish sampled from Bardawil Lake, although fishing activity. However, customers should know that health concerns may be associated with overeating fish.

RESUMEN

Ultrafine particles (UFPs) dominate the atmospheric particles in number concentration, impacting human health and climate change. However, existing studies primarily rely on mass-based approaches, leading to a restricted understanding of the number-based and chemically resolved health effects of atmospheric UFPs. In this study, we utilized a high-mass-resolution single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer to investigate the online chemical composition and number size distribution of ultrafine, fine, and coarse particles during the summertime in urban Shenzhen, China. Human respiratory deposition dose assessments of particles with varying chemical compositions were further conducted by a respiratory deposition model. The results showed that during our observation, particles containing elemental carbon (EC) were the dominant components in UFPs (0.05-0.1 µm). Compared to fine and coarse particles, UFPs can deposit more deeply into the respiratory tract with a daily dose of ∼2.08 ± 0.67 billion particles. Among the deposited UFPs, EC-cluster particles constituted ∼85.7% in number fraction, accounting for a daily number dose of ∼1.78 billion particles, which poses a greater impact on human health. Simultaneously, we found discrepancies in the chemically resolved particle depositions among number-, surface area-, and mass-based approaches, emphasizing the importance of an appropriate metric for particle health-risk evaluation.

RESUMEN

Little is known about the impacts of specific chemical components on cardiovascular hospitalizations. We examined the relationships of PM2.5 chemical composition and daily hospitalizations for cardiovascular disease in 184 Chinese cities. Acute PM2.5 chemical composition exposures were linked to higher cardiovascular disease hospitalizations on the same day and the percentage change of cardiovascular admission was the highest at 1.76% (95% CI, 1.36-2.16%) per interquartile range increase in BC, followed by 1.07% (0.72-1.43%) for SO42-, 1.04% (0.63-1.46%) for NH4+, 0.99% (0.55-1.43%) for NO3-, 0.83% (0.50-1.17%) for OM, and 0.80% (0.34%-1.26%) for Cl-. Similar findings were observed for all cause-specific major cardiovascular diseases, except for heart rhythm disturbances. Short-term exposures to PM2.5 chemical composition were related to higher admissions and showed diverse impacts on major cardiovascular diseases.

RESUMEN

Volatility of organic aerosols (OAs) significantly influences new particle formation and the occurrence of particulate air pollution. However, the relationship between the volatility of OA and the level of particulate air pollution (i.e., particulate matter concentration) is not well understood. In this study, we compared the chemical composition (identified by an ultrahigh-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer) and volatility (estimated based on a predeveloped parametrization method) of OAs in urban PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm) samples from seven German and Chinese cities, where the PM2.5 concentration ranged from a light (14 µg m-3) to heavy (319 µg m-3) pollution level. A large fraction (71-98%) of compounds in PM2.5 samples were attributable to intermediate-volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). The fraction of low-volatility organic compounds (LVOCs) and extremely low-volatility organic compounds (ELVOCs) decreased from clean (28%) to heavily polluted urban regions (2%), while that of IVOCs increased from 34 to 62%. We found that the average peak area-weighted volatility of organic compounds in different cities showed a logarithmic correlation with the average PM2.5 concentration, indicating that the volatility of urban OAs increases with the increase of air pollution level. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between OA volatility and PM pollution levels and deepen the understanding of urban air pollutant evolution.

RESUMEN

The determination of molar masses and their distributions is crucial in polymer synthesis and design. This work presents the current performance and limitations of diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) on a low-field (benchtop) NMR spectrometer (at 90 MHz) as an alternative to size exclusion chromatography (SEC) for determining diffusion coefficient distributions (DCDs) and molar mass distributions (MMDs). After optimization for narrowly distributed homopolymers, MMDs obtained with inverse Laplace transformation (ILT) and log-normal distribution are compared with average molar masses obtained with mono- and bi-exponential fits, as well as MMDs obtained from SEC. This approach enables ILT to determine DCDs and MMDs even for bimodal homopolymers with fully spectrally overlapping signals and block copolymers with various chemical compositions, for which chemical composition profiles are determined. The feasibility of low-field diffusion NMR with samples dissolved in non-deuterated solvents is further demonstrated and methods for solvent suppression are discussed.

RESUMEN

Paternal exposure to environmental risk factors influences the offspring health. This study aimed to evaluate the association between paternal air pollution exposure mediated by sperm DNA methylation and adverse birth outcomes in offspring. We recruited 1607 fertile men and their partners from 2014 to 2016 and collected semen samples to detect sperm DNA methylation. Multivariate linear regression and weighted quantile sum regression models were used to assess the associations between paternal air pollution exposure and offspring birth outcomes. A critical exposure window was identified. Reduced representation bisulfite sequencing was used to detect sperm DNA methylation. The results demonstrated that high paternal exposure to PM2.5 (ß = -211.31, 95% CI: (-386.37, -36.24)), PM10 (ß = -178.20, 95% CI: (-277.13, -79.27)), and NO2 (ß = -84.22, 95% CI: (-165.86, -2.57)) was negatively associated with offspring's birthweight, especially in boys. Additionally, an early exposure window of 15-69 days before fertilization was recognized to be the key exposure window, which increased the risk of low birth weight and small for gestational age. Furthermore, paternal co-exposure to six air pollutants contributed to lower birthweight (ß = -51.91, 95% CI: (-92.72, -11.10)) and shorter gestational age (ß = -1.72, 95% CI: (-3.26, -0.17)) and PM2.5 was the most weighted pollutant. Paternal air pollution exposure resulted in 10,328 differentially methylated regions and the IGF2R gene was the key gene involved in the epigenetic process. These differentially methylated genes were predominantly associated with protein binding, transcriptional regulation, and DNA templating. These findings indicate that spermatogenesis is a susceptible window during which paternal exposure to air pollution affects sperm DNA methylation and the birth outcomes of offspring.

RESUMEN

The present reported work deals with the ability of Togolese plants' essential oils (EOs) to act as repellents for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in order to use them as personal protective requirements or actions against mosquito bites and therefore to drastically reduce the risk of contracting dengue or yellow fever. EOs studied here were extracted from dry leaves of Ageratum conyzoides L., Eucalyptus citriodora Hook, and Lantana camara Linn, three plants that were collected at different daytimes (7 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7 p.m.) at various locations in Togo. Using a Clevenger-type device, EOs were obtained by the hydrodistillation method (Clevenger, 1928). The physical parameters of the EOs such as density, refractive index, rotatory power, and organoleptic properties were determined. Then, the characterization of EOs using gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector (GC/FID) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was conducted. Chemical analyses showed the presence of several main compounds from EO samples of the three plants. The major compounds were characterized and identified as: (i) precocene I (67.7, 70.6, and 66.9%) and ß-caryophyllene (17.4, 12.1, and 16.5%) for the EO of A. conyzoïdes; (ii) citronellal (63.3, 67.2, and 75.4%) and citronellol (24.5, 21.4, and 14.3%) for E. citriodora and (iii) ß-caryophyllene (15.3, 11.7, and 12.4%), sabinene (28.4, 35, and 33.3%) and eucalyptol (11.5, 14.1, and 15.6%) for L. camara at 7 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively. The yield and the chemical composition of the oils vary according to harvesting time and sunlight. The insecticidal activity of EOs was evaluated following the CDC bottle method on Aedes aegypti females. All the EOs tested on the female adults of Aedes aegypti showed significant insecticidal activity. The EO of A. conyzoïdes at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. resulted in 100% mortality after 8 min of exposure time at the lowest concentration (0.0025%). At the same concentration for the EO of E. citriodora, the mortality rates were 83%, 38.8%, and 30.80% at 7 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively for an exposure time of 8 min. The EO extracted from the leaves of L. camara harvested at 7 a.m. was effective after an exposure time of 15 min for a concentration of 0.02%. For the same concentration, the mortality rates of the EO of L. camara harvested at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., after 8 min were 62.9% and 52%, respectively. From these interesting results reported for the first time in Togo, EOs from leaves of three Togolese plants harvested at different times of the day appear to be a valuable alternative for mosquito vector control in Togo or abroad countries in which dengue and yellow fever constitute a terrible scourge.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to improve the conventional procedure of alginate isolation from the brown seaweed (Laminaria digitata L.) biomass and investigate the possibility of further valorization of the ethanolic fraction representing the byproduct after the degreasing and depigmentation of biomass. The acid treatment of biomass supported by ultrasound was modeled and optimized regarding the alginate yield using a response surface methodology based on the Box-Behnken design. A treatment time of 30 min, a liquid-to-solid ratio of 30 mL/g, and a treatment temperature of 47 °C were proposed as optimal conditions under which the alginate yield related to the mass of dry biomass was 30.9%. The use of ultrasonic radiation significantly reduced the time required for the acid treatment of biomass by about 4 to 24 times compared to other available conventional procedures. The isolated alginate had an M/G ratio of 1.08, which indicates a greater presence of M-blocks in its structure and the possibility of forming a soft and elastic hydrogel with its use. The chemical composition of the ethanolic fraction including total antioxidant content (293 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight), total flavonoid content (14.9 mg rutin equivalent/g dry weight), contents of macroelements (the highest content of sodium, 106.59 mg/g dry weight), and microelement content (the highest content of boron, 198.84 mg/g dry weight) was determined, and the identification of bioactive compounds was carried out. The results of ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analysis confirmed the presence of 48 compounds, of which 41 compounds were identified as sugar alcohol, phenolic compounds, and lipids. According to the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay, the radical scavenging activity of the ethanolic fraction (the half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 42.84 ± 0.81 µg/mL) indicated its strong activity, which was almost the same as in the case of the positive control, synthetic antioxidant butylhydroxytoluene (the half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 36.61 ± 0.79 µg/mL). Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus cereus) were more sensitive to the ethanolic fraction compared to Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Shigella sonnei). The obtained results indicated the possibility of the further use of the ethanolic fraction as a fertilizer for plant growth in different species and antifouling agents, applicable in aquaculture.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to assess the in vitro effects of re-irradiation on enamel and dentin properties, simulating head and neck cancer radiotherapy retreatment. Forty-five human permanent molars were classified into five groups: non-irradiated; irradiated 60 Gy, and re-irradiated with doses of 30, 40, and 50 Gy. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed for analysis. Raman spectroscopy assessed intensity, spectral area, and specific peaks comparatively. Statistical analysis involved Kolmogorov-Smirnov and One-Way ANOVA tests, with Tukey's post-test (significance level set at 5%). Significant changes in irradiated, non-irradiated, and re-irradiated enamel peaks were observed, including phosphate (438 nm), hydroxyapatite (582 nm), phosphate (960 nm), and carbonate (1070 nm) (p < 0.05). Re-irradiation affected the entire tooth (p > 0.05), leading to interprismatic region degradation, enamel prism destruction, and hydroxyapatite crystal damage. Dentin exhibited tubule obliteration, crack formation, and progressive collagen fiber fragmentation. EDX revealed increased oxygen percentage and decreased phosphorus and calcium post-reirradiation. It is concluded that chemical and morphological changes in irradiated permanent teeth were dose-dependent, exacerbated by re-irradiation, causing substantial damage in enamel and dentin.

RESUMEN

Polygoni Multiflori Radix (PMR) is a medicinal herb commonly used in China and Eastern Asia. Recently, the discovery of hepatotoxicity in PMR has received considerable attention from scientists. Processing is a traditional Chinese medicine technique used for the effective reduction of toxicity. One uncommon technique is the braising method-also known as 'Wen-Fa' in Chinese-which is used to prepare tonics or poisonous medications. Braised PMR (BPMR)-also known as 'Wen-He-Shou-Wu'-is one of the processed products of the braising method. However, the non-volatile components of BPMR have not been identified and examined in detail, and therefore, the hepatotoxic advantage of BPMR remains unknown. In this study, we compared the microscopic characteristics of different samples in powder form using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), investigated the non-volatile components, assessed the effects of different processed PMR products on the liver, and compared the differences between BPMR and PMR Praeparata recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition). We found that the hepatotoxicity of BPMR was dramatically decreased, which may be related to an increase in polysaccharide content and a decrease in toxic substances. The present study provides an important foundation for future investigations of the processing mechanisms of BPMR.

RESUMEN

D-borneol is a double-loop monoterpene with a wide use in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetics industries. Natural D-borneol can be extracted from branches and leaves of D-borneol resource plants. With the widespread use of natural D-borneol, the identification of D-borneol resource plants and the protection of germplasm resources have become the focus of research. In this study, plant leaf morphology, chemical composition, and simple sequence repeat (SSR) molecular marker analysis were used to analyze and cluster 5 species of D-borneol resource plants and their closely related species. It was found that all three analysis methods could distinguish and cluster these D-borneol resource plants to some degree. The result of SSR analysis using capillary electrophoresis was the best, and it could distinguish Mei Pian tree from Yin Xiang as well as Longnao Zhang from An Zhang. The correlation analysis between SSR similarity matrix and leaf morphology analysis and between SSR similarity matrix and chemical composition similarity matrix revealed that they both had significant correlations (P < 0.0001) and the correlation (r = 0.588) between SSR and leaf morphology was a little higher than that (r = 0.519) between SSR and chemical composition. This indicated that the environment had a greater impact on the chemical composition than on leaf morphology. The research findings will offer efficient techniques to cluster natural D-borneol resource plants and establish a theoretical basis for their future development and utilization.

RESUMEN

Cheese presents extensive variability in physical, chemical, and sensory characteristics according to the variety of processing methods and conditions used to create it. Relationships between the many characteristics of cheeses are known for single cheese types or by comparing a few of them, but not for a large number of cheese types. This case study used the properties recorded on 1,050 different cheeses from 107 producers grouped into 37 categories to analyze and quantify the interrelationships among the chemical and physical properties of many cheese types. The 15 cheese traits considered were ripening length, weight, firmness, adhesiveness, 6 different chemical characteristics, and 5 different color traits. As the 105 correlations between the 15 cheese traits were highly variable, a multivariate analysis was carried out. Four latent explanatory factors were extracted, representing 86% of the covariance matrix: the first factor (38% of covariance) was named Solids because it is mainly linked positively to fat, protein, water-soluble nitrogen, ash, firmness, adhesiveness, and ripening length, and negatively to moisture and lightness; the second factor (24%) was named Hue because it is linked positively to redness/blueness, yellowness/greenness, and chroma, and negatively to hue; the third factor (17%) was named Size because it is linked positively to weight, ripening length, firmness, and protein; and the fourth factor (7%) was named Basicity because it is linked positively to pH. The 37 cheese categories were grouped into 8 clusters and described using the latent factors: the Grana Padano cluster (characterized mainly by high Size scores); hard mountain cheeses (mainly high Solids scores); very soft cheeses (low Solids scores); blue cheeses (high Basicity scores), yellowish cheeses (high Hue scores), and 3 other clusters (soft cheeses, pasta filata and treated rind, and firm mountain cheeses) according to specific combinations of intermediate latent factors and cheese traits. In this case study, the high variability and interdependence of 15 major cheese traits can be substantially explained by only 4 latent factors, allowing us to identify and characterize 8 cheese type clusters.

RESUMEN

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive across ecosystems, likely posing significant environmental and health risks based on more and more evidence. In this study, we searched through the Web of Science Core Collection and obtained 1039 papers for visualization and analysis. In order to discuss the chemical composition, migration, transformation and potential risk of MPs, 135 sets of relevant data in soil, water, and atmosphere were collected in China as a typical region, which is a hotspot region for investigation of MPs. The results showed that the primary polymer categories of MPs in the environment to be polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene. The soil contains a significant quantity of MPs, averaging at 12,107.42 items·kgdw-1, while water contains averaging at 97,271.18 items m-3. The total pollution load indexes for all three environments are at risk level I. Based on current risk assessment methods, the potential ecological risk of MPs is low. However, based on the polymer components, migration and transformation patterns, and especially the complexes with other pollutants, it indicates an increasing indirect risk. Interactions with some other pollutants are likely amplify the ecological and health risks associated with MPs. Aggregative results showed that the present risk assessment models could not assess the risks of MPs well. Thus, we suggested develop a risk assessment methodology for MPs based on relevant research progress. Some factors such as the size and form of MPs, sources and distribution, bioaccumulation, social acceptance and economic costs could be considered adding in the present risk assessment models. Finally, promotion of development and application of green chemically synthesized bioplastics such as using synthetic biology to help degrade plastics would be an alternative and sustainable option to relieve the adverse environmental and health concerns of MPs.

RESUMEN

The biocompatibility and resorption characteristics of ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP, Ca3(PO4)2) have made it a coveted alternative for bone grafts. However, the underlying mechanisms governing the biological interactions between ß-tricalcium phosphate and osteoclasts remain elusive. It has been speculated that the composition at grain boundaries might vary and affect ß-TCP resorption properties. Atom probe tomography (APT) offers a quantitative approach to assess the composition of the grain boundaries, and thus advance our comprehension of the biological responses within the microstructure and chemical composition at the nanoscale. The precise quantitative analysis of chemical composition remains a notable challenge in APT, primarily due to the influence of measurement conditions on compositional accuracy. In this study, we investigated the impact of laser pulse energy on the composition of ß-TCP using APT, aiming for the most precise Ca:P ratio and consistent results across multiple analyses performed with different sets of analysis conditions and on two different instruments.

RESUMEN

Solanum nigrum is a common weed in arable land, while being used in traditional medicine around the world due to its remarkable levels of valuable secondary metabolites. Agronomic and biological techniques can alter the production of a specific metabolite by influencing plant growth and metabolism. The effects of colonization with three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), including Funneliformis mosseae, Rhizoglomus intraradices, and Rhizoglomus fasciculatum, on the chemical composition of S. nigrum fruits were evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. More than 100 different chemical constituents were evaluated by GC-MS. Our study revealed that the levels of phenols (quinic acid), benzenes (hydroquinone), sulfur-containing compounds, lactone and carboxylic acids were improved by R. intraradices. In contrast, hydroxymethylfurfural increased by 68 % in R. fasciculatum inoculated with uninoculated S. nigrum plants, and this species was also the most efficient in inducing sugar compounds (D-galactose, lactose, and melezitose). Our results suggest that AMF colonization is an effective biological strategy that can alter the chemical composition and improve the medicinal properties of S. nigrum.

RESUMEN

The Myrtaceae family is renowned for its rich diversity of bioactive metabolites with broad applications across various industries. This review comprehensively explores the chemical composition and biological activities of Neotropical species within the Myrtaceae family from 2011 to 2023. A total of 170 papers were analyzed, covering 148 species from 28 genera, with notable emphasis on Eugenia, Eucalyptus, Myrcia, and Psidium. Compounds with relative abundance exceeding 10% were tabulated to highlight the most significant volatiles for each genus. Our findings were cross-referenced with previous reviews whenever feasible. Antioxidant, antibacterial, and antimicrobial activities emerged as the primary focus, collectively representing 41% of the studies, predominantly conducted in vitro. Additionally, we discuss less conventional approaches to essential oil studies in Myrtaceae species, underscoring avenues for future exploration. The investigation of essential oils from Myrtaceae holds promise for significant advancements in biotechnology, with potential benefits for the economy, environment, and human health. This review serves as a valuable resource for guiding future research strategies in this field.
