RESUMEN

Cloudy conditions at a local scale pose a significant challenge for forecasting renewable energy generation through photovoltaic panels. Consequently, having real-time knowledge of sky conditions becomes highly valuable. This information could inform decision-making processes in system operations, such as determining whether conditions are favorable for activating a standalone system requiring a minimum level of radiation or whether sky conditions might lead to higher energy consumption than generation during adverse cloudy conditions. This research leveraged convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transfer learning (TL) classification techniques, testing various architectures from the EfficientNet family and two ResNet models for classifying sky images. Cross-validation methods were applied across different experiments, where the most favorable outcome was achieved with the EfficientNetV2-B1 and EfficientNetV2-B2 models boasting a mean Accuracy of 98.09%. This study underscores the efficacy of the architectures employed for sky image classification, while also highlighting the models yielding the best results.

BACKGROUND: The endoscopic lens becomes clouded and its visibility reduces during colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), especially in cases with submucosal fatty tissue. Dual red imaging (DRI) is a novel image-enhanced endoscopic technique that improves endoscopic visibility. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive factors of submucosal fatty tissue and the clinical usefulness of DRI in maintaining clear visibility during colorectal ESD. METHODS: The study participants included 586 consecutive patients with 645 colorectal tumors who underwent ESD between January 2014 and July 2017. First, the degree of submucosal fatty tissue was evaluated by reviewing recorded images, and the clinical characteristics of the patients and tumors related to severe submucosal fatty tissue were evaluated. Second, 34 tumors resected using DRI were propensity score-matched in a 1:1 ratio to other resected tumors using white light imaging (WLI), and the degree of endoscope lens cloudiness and clinical outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: The proportion of tumors located in the right side of the colon, body mass index (≥ 25, BMI), and hemoglobin A1c (≥ 6.5%, HbA1c) were significantly higher in patients with severe submucosal fatty tissue. The visibility in the DRI group was significantly better than in the WLI group. Treatment outcomes in the DRI group were as good as those in the WLI group. CONCLUSIONS: Tumor location in the right side of the colon, BMI (≥ 25), and HbA1c (≥ 6.5%) are the predictive factors of severe submucosal fatty tissue. DRI is useful in maintaining clear visibility during colorectal ESD, especially with submucosal fatty tissue.

Suicide is a serious public health problem around the world. Since the nineteenth century, the impact of socio-environmental factors on suicide has attracted much public attention, especially in the context of global climate change. We have performed a retrospective correlation study that analyzes the demographic pattern of suicide in Cantabria, a northern coastland region of Spain. Moreover, we have created a multivariable binomial regression model to study the relationship between suicide and environmental factors (atmospheric pollutants and meteorological variables) among January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2013 in the province. During the 14-year study period, there was a suicide annual incidence of 4.9 cases per 100,000 population in Cantabria. The incidence was highest in adults aged 70-74 years old (11.8 per 100,000 population). The most common method group of suicide was hanging, strangulation and suffocation, accounting for 49.3% of all suicide deaths. When correlating suicide and meteorological variables, a statistically significant association was found with the level of cloudiness (p = 0.007). According to our results, an increase of one eighth of sky cloud-cover correlated to a 7% increase in total deaths by suicide and the association was especially strong during spring.

In this study, a minimum distance classification and forward feature selection technique are joined to determine the relationship between weather conditions and the increase of the risk of type A acute aortic dissection (AAD) events in Berlin. The results demonstrate that changes in the amount of cloudiness and air temperature are the most representative weather predictors among the studied parameters. A discrimination surface was developed for the prediction of AAD events 6 h ahead, and it is found that, under a specific amount of cloudiness and air temperature, the risk of AAD events in Berlin increases about 20 %.

High hydrostatic pressure as a kind of non-thermal processing might maintain the quality of thermo-sensitive watermelon juice. So, the effect of high hydrostatic pressure treatment on enzymes and quality of watermelon juice was investigated. After high hydrostatic pressure treatment, the activities of polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, and pectin methylesterase of juice decreased significantly with the pressure (P < 0.05). Inactivation of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase could be fitted by two-fraction model and that of pectin methylesterase could be described by first-order reaction model. Titratable acidity, pH, and total soluble solid of juice did not change significantly (P > 0.05). No significant difference was observed in lycopene and total phenolics after high hydrostatic pressure treatment when compared to the control (P > 0.05). Cloudiness and viscosity increased with pressure (P < 0.05) but did not change significantly with treatment time (P > 0.05). a*- and b*-value both unchanged after high hydrostatic pressure treatment (P > 0.05) while L*-value increased but the values had no significant difference among treated juices. Browning degree after high hydrostatic pressure treatment decreased with increase in pressure and treatment time (P < 0.05). Through the comparison of total color difference values, high hydrostatic pressure had little effect on color of juice. The results of this study demonstrated the efficacy of high hydrostatic pressure in inactivating enzymes and maintaining the quality of watermelon juice.

Suicide results from complex interactions between biological, psychological, and socioeconomic factors. At the population level, the study of suicide rates and their environmental and social determinants allows us to disentangle some of these complexities and provides support for policy design and preventive actions. In this study we aim to evaluate the associations between environmental and socioeconomic factors and demographically stratified suicide rates on large temporal and spatial scales. Our dataset contains information about yearly suicides rates by sex and age from 2000 through 2017 along a 4000 km latitudinal gradient. We used zero-inflated negative binomial models to evaluate the spatio-temporal influence of each environmental and socioeconomic variable on suicide rates at each sex/age combination. Overall, we found differential patterns of associations between suicide rates and explanatory variables by age and sex. Suicide rates in men increases in middle and high latitude regions and intermediate age classes. For adolescent and adult women, we found a similar pattern with an increase in suicide rates at middle and high latitudes. Sex differences measured by the male/female suicide ratio shows a marked increase with age. We found that cloudiness has a positive effect on suicide rates in both men and women 24 years old or younger. Regional poverty shows a major impact on men in age classes above 35 years old, an effect that was absent in women. Alcohol and marijuana consumption showed no significant effect sizes. Our findings support high spatio-temporal variability in suicide rates in interaction with extrinsic factors. Several strong differential impacts of environmental and socioeconomic variables on suicide rates depending on sex and age were detected. These results suggest that the design of public policies and interventions to reduce suicide prevalence need to consider the local social and environmental contexts of target populations.

RESUMEN

The data contained in this article refers to the measurements of climatic factors during an entire year in low latitudes regions with warm and humid climates, in Santa Rosa city from Ecuador. Since the geographical location and the importance of cloudiness in these regions, these measurements have focused on the solar radiation flux, cloud cover and sky temperature. The data obtained have been configured in a weather file for energy calculations, which has been used in the research article "Assessment of the reflectivity and emissivity impact on light metal roofs thermal behaviour, in warm and humid climate" [1].

A generally accepted value for the Radiation Amplification Factor (RAF), with respect to the erythemal action spectrum for sunburn of human skin, is -1.1, indicating that a 1.0% increase in stratospheric ozone leads to a 1.1% decrease in the biologically damaging UV radiation in the erythemal action spectrum reaching the Earth. The RAF is used to quantify the non-linear change in the biologically damaging UV radiation in the erythemal action spectrum as a function of total column ozone (O3). Spectrophotometer measurements recorded at ten US monitoring sites were used in this analysis, and over 71,000 total UVR measurement scans of the sky were collected at those 10 sites between 1998 and 2000 to assess the RAF value. This UVR dataset was examined to determine the specific impact of clouds on the RAF. Five de novo modeling approaches were used on the dataset, and the calculated RAF values ranged from a low of -0.80 to a high of -1.38.
