The commonly used baseline-free Lamb wave damage identification methods often require a large amount of sensor data to eliminate the dependence on baseline signals. To improve the efficiency of damage localization, this paper proposes a new Lamb wave damage location method, namely the probabilistic exchanging-element time-reversal method (PEX-TRM), which is based on the exchanging-element time-reversal method (EX-TRM) and the probabilistic damage identification method. In this method, the influence of the damage wave packet migration on the correlation coefficient between the reconstructed signals of each sensing path and the initial excitation signal is analyzed, and the structure is divided into multiple regional units corresponding to the damage to locate damage. In addition, the influence of the number of sensing paths on the location accuracy is also analyzed. A method of damage probability imaging based on structural symmetry is proposed to enhance location accuracy in the case of sparse sensing paths. The experimental and simulation results verify that the method can achieve damage location with fewer excitation times. Moreover, this method can avoid the problem that the damage wave packet is difficult to extract, improve the efficiency of damage location, and promote the engineering application of the Lamb wave damage location method.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is a composite material known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, stiffness, and corrosion and fatigue resistance, making it suitable for its use in structural components. However, CFRP can be subject to various types of damage, such as delamination, matrix cracking, or fiber breakage, requiring nondestructive evaluation to ensure structural integrity. In this context, damage imaging algorithms are important for assessing the condition of this material. This paper presents signal and image processing methods for delamination characterization of thin CFRP plates using eddy current testing (ECT). The measurement system included an inductive ECT probe with three coil elements, which has the characteristic of allowing eddy currents to be induced in the specimen with two different configurations. In this study, the peak amplitude of the induced voltage in the receiver element and the phase shift between the excitation and receiver signals were considered as damage-sensitive features. Using the ECT probe, C-scans were performed in the vicinity of delamination defects of different sizes. The dimensions and shape of the ECT probe were considered by applying the erosion method in the damage imaging process. Different thresholding approaches were also investigated to extract the size of the defective areas. To evaluate the impact of this application, a comparison is made between the results obtained before and after thresholding using histogram analysis. The evaluation of damage imaging for three different delamination sizes is presented for quantitative analysis.

Thin-walled structures, like aircraft skins and ship shells, are often several meters in size but only a few millimeters thick. By utilizing the laser ultrasonic Lamb wave detection method (LU-LDM), signals can be detected over long distances without physical contact. Additionally, this technology offers excellent flexibility in designing the measurement point distribution. The characteristics of LU-LDM are first analyzed in this review, specifically in terms of laser ultrasound and hardware configuration. Next, the methods are categorized based on three criteria: the quantity of collected wavefield data, the spectral domain, and the distribution of measurement points. The advantages and disadvantages of multiple methods are compared, and the suitable conditions for each method are summarized. Thirdly, we summarize four combined methods that balance detection efficiency and accuracy. Finally, several future development trends are suggested, and the current gaps and shortcomings in LU-LDM are highlighted. This review builds a comprehensive framework for LU-LDM for the first time, which is expected to serve as a technical reference for applying this technology in large, thin-walled structures.

This paper presents a baseline-free damage imaging technique using a parallel array of piezoelectric sensors and a control board that facilitates custom combinations of sensor selection. This technique incorporates an imaging algorithm that uses parallel beams for generation and reception of ultrasonic guided waves in a pitch-catch configuration. A baseline-free reconstruction algorithm for probabilistic inspection of defects (RAPID) algorithm is adopted. The proposed RAPID method replaces the conventional approach of using signal difference coefficients with the maximum signal envelope as a damage index, ensuring independence from baseline data. Additionally, conversely to the conventional RAPID algorithm which uses all possible sensor combinations, an innovative selection of combinations is proposed to mitigate attenuation effects. The proposed method is designed for the inspection of lap joints. Experimental measurements were carried out on a composite lap joint, which featured two dissimilar-sized disbonds positioned at the lap joint's borderline. A 2D correlation coefficient was used to quantitatively determine the similarity between the obtained images and a reference image with correct defect shapes and locations. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed damage imaging method in detecting both defects. Additionally, parametric studies were conducted to illustrate how various parameters influence the accuracy of the obtained imaging results.

Lamb waves have multimodal and dispersion effects, which reduces their performance in damage localization with respect to resolution. To detect damage with fewest sensors and high resolution, a method, using only two piezoelectric transducers and based on orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) decomposition, was proposed. First, an OMP-based decomposition and dispersion removal algorithm is introduced, which is capable of separating wave packets of different propagation paths and removing the dispersion part successively. Then, two simulation signals, with nonoverlapped and overlapped wave packets, are employed to verify the proposed method. Thereafter, with the proposed algorithm, the wave packets reflected from the defect and edge are all separated. Finally, a sparse sensor array with only two transducers succeeds in localizing the defect. The experimental results show that the OMP-based algorithm is beneficial for resolution improvement and transducer usage reduction.

Lamb wave-based damage imaging is a promising technique for aircraft structural health monitoring, as enhancing the resolution of damage detection is a persistent challenge. In this paper, a damage imaging technique based on the Time Reversal-MUltiple SIgnal Classification (TR-MUSIC) algorithm is developed to detect damage in plate-type structures. In the TR-MUSIC algorithm, a transfer matrix is first established by exciting and sensing signals. A TR operator is constructed for eigenvalue decomposition to divide the data space into signal and noise subspaces. The structural space spectrum of the algorithm is calculated based on the orthogonality of the two subspaces. A local TR-MUSIC algorithm is proposed to enhance the image quality of multiple damages by using a moving time window to establish the local space spectrum at different times or different distances. The multidamage detection capability of the proposed enhanced TR-MUSIC algorithm is verified by simulations and experiments. The results reveal that the local TR-MUSIC algorithm can not only effectively detect multiple damages in plate-type structures with good image quality but also has a superresolution ability for detecting damage with distances smaller than half the wavelength.

Nondestructive evaluation of carbon fiber reinforced material structures has received special attention in the last decades. Usage of Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGW), particularly Lamb waves, has become one of the most popular techniques for damage location, due to their sensitivity to defects, large range of inspection, and good propagation in several material types. However, extracting meaningful physical features from the response signals is challenging due to several factors, such as the multimodal nature of UGW, boundary conditions and the geometric shape of the structure, possible material anisotropies, and their environmental dependency. Neural networks (NN) are becoming a practical and accurate approach to analyzing the acquired data using data-driven methods. In this paper, a Convolutional-Neural-Network (CNN) is proposed to predict the distance-to-damage values from the signals corresponding to a transmitter-receiver path of transducers. The NN input is a 2D image (time-frequency) obtained as the Wavelet transform of the acquired experimental signals. The distances obtained with the NN are the input of a novel damage location algorithm which outputs a bidimensional image of the structure's surface showing the estimated damage locations with a deviation of the actual position lower than 15 mm.

The delay-and-sum imaging algorithm is a promising crack localization approach for crack detection and monitoring of key structural regions. Most studies successfully offer a hole-like damage position. However, cracks are more common than hole-like damages in a structure. To solve this issue, this paper presents a crack localization approach, based on diffraction wave theory, which is capable of imaging crack endpoints. The guided wave propagated to the crack endpoints and transformed into a diffraction wave. A line sensor array was used to record the diffraction waveform. Then, dispersion compensation was applied to shorten the dispersive wave packets and separate the overlapping wave packets. Subsequently, half-wave compensation was executed to improve the localization accuracy. Finally, the effectiveness of this high-resolution crack localization method was validated by an experimental example.

Externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement is becoming increasingly popular in the field of structural retrofitting due to its considerable efficiency. However, debonding failure occurs sometimes at the interface between CFRP and steel substrate, which is found to be fatal for the CFRP-reinforced structures. Thus, the bonding condition between two materials should be closely monitored to ensure structural serviceability. A linear guided wave based method employing the correlation analysis is adopted in this paper to monitor the growth of debonding failure generated by fatigue in a CFRP-strengthened steel structure from a relatively small scale (smaller than 20 mm in diameter). The correlation coefficients (CC) between the benchmark signals and the signals after certain cycles of loading are calculated individually. Subsequently, the damage index (DI) is extracted on the basis of CC to illustrate the extent of debonding. Finally, the possible debonding position in the structure is predicted by a probability based imaging method.

Considering a trade-off between temporal-spatial resolution and multi-mode nature of Lamb waves, tone bursts with short durations are usually used as excitations in Lamb wave based damage detection. A short-duration excitation usually requires a large amplitude to carry sufficient energy so as to obtain response signals with enough signal-to-noise ratio and cover a large inspection area. In this paper, an alternative Lamb wave damage imaging method using nonlinear chirp (nonlinear frequency modulation, NLFM) excitation with a long duration and a small amplitude is proposed. The signal processing techniques of pulse compression and dispersion compensation are adopted to compress the long-duration wave packets of response signals into short ones. Compared with conventional tone burst excitations with short durations and small amplitudes, due to the long duration of the nonlinear chirp excitation and the use of pulse compression, sufficient energy can be applied to transducers under small amplitude excitations so the image contrast in imaging will not degrade. Furthermore, as large amplitude excitations are no longer required, high voltage amplifiers are not necessary so the hardware of the Lamb wave testing system is simplified. Experiments on a carbon steel plate with an artificial crack are carried out and Lamb wave signals are collected using a linear array consisting of nine PZTs. Experimental results under the NLFM signal and conventional tone bursts are provided. Experimental results show that under the condition of the same excitation amplitude, the proposed method under the NLFM excitation can achieve better imaging quality compared with methods under conventional tone bursts.

In guided-wave-based damage-imaging algorithms, damage reconstruction typically involves comparing the signals with and without a defect. However, in many cases, defect-free data may not be available. Therefore, in this study, baseline and baseline-free approaches were used for damage imaging, exploiting not only the amplitude of the signal as the feature but also five additional features, namely, the amplitude of the sparse signal after deconvolution, the amplitude of the coefficients at the excitation frequency from the re-assigned short-time Fourier transform, the time of flight determined from cross-correlation, kurtosis in the time domain, and kurtosis in the frequency domain. For this study, three different plates with different types of defects were considered: a metallic plate with a notch-type artificial defect, a pultruded type of composite plate with an impact defect, and a laminate composite plate with plexiglass serving as an added mass damper artificial defect. The Reconstruction Algorithm for Probabilistic Inspection of Damage (the RAPID algorithm) was used to characterize the defects on the three plates, and the defect parameters were then quantified by creating an ellipse after thresholding.

Damage imaging technology based on ultrasonic guided wave can characterize and visualize structural damage. However, current imaging methods require high accuracy in wave packets information extraction, resulting in artifacts, large spots and false imaging. Therefore, an intelligent colony optimization imaging method is proposed to transform the damage imaging problem into the scattering sources search problem. The number of imaging trajectories through potential scattering sources is employed as the fitness function to assess the damage possibility in this individual. The fitness function is further implemented to particle swarm optimization algorithm for iterative search of actual scattering sources to find out the damage area with highest damage possibility. After the scattering sources search, the location of the damage can be identified through observing the distribution of the population. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed intelligent imaging method can accurately locate the crack damage of different lengths and delamination damage in composites, and the damage imaging effect is better than that of elliptic imaging.

Piezoelectric sensors array based damage imaging method as a high resolution source localization algorithm is becoming a promising method in structural health monitoring (SHM) technology. However, the environmental variations could affect the gain-phase of array signal. This paper experimentally evaluates the environmental effects on piezoelectric sensors array, and presents a compensated 2D-MUSIC based damage imaging method for composite structures. Firstly, detailed analysis and comparison discussion about the gain-phase difference of array signal when the environmental parameters change, and the gain-phase changes respect to the environmental parameters could be obtained. Secondly, array error matrix is structured and substituted into the steering vector of the original 2D-MUSIC algorithm to compensate. Finally, the compensated 2D-MUSIC algorithm is applied for estimating the initial estimates of damage. After substituting these initial estimates, the cost function is minimized by adaptive iterative calculating the reasonable location of the damage source. The experiments on an epoxy laminate plate demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Strengthening of engineering structures is an important issue, especially for elements subjected to variable loads. In the case of concrete beams or slabs, one of the most popular approaches assumes mounting an external reinforcement in the form of steel or composite elements by structural adhesives. A significant disadvantage of adhesive joints is the lack of access to the adhesive film for visual condition assessment, thus, there is a need for non-destructive diagnostics of these kinds of connections. The aim of this paper was the identification and visualization of defects in adhesive joints between concrete beams and steel plates using the guided wave propagation technique. The initial theoretical and numerical analyses were performed. The experimental wave field was excited and measured by the scanning laser Doppler vibrometry. The collected signals were processed by the weighted root mean square (WRMS) calculation. As a result, 2-D damage maps were obtained. The numerical simulations were performed to corroborate the experimental results. The results showed that the guided waves could be successfully applied in non-destructive diagnostics of adhesive joints between concrete and steel elements. However, the quality of damage visualizations strongly depended on the location of excitation.

The sensitivity of Lamb wave modes to a particular defect or instance of damage is dependent on various factors (e.g., the local strain energy density due to that wave mode). As a result, different modes will be more useful than others for damage detection and quantification, dependent on damage type and location. For example, prior work in the field has shown that out-of-plane modes may have a higher sensitivity than in-plane modes to surface defects in plates. The excitability of a certain data acquisition system and the corresponding resolution for damage imaging also varies with frequency. The aim of the present work was to develop a multi-mode damage imaging technique that enables characterization of damage type and size, general sensitivity to unknown damage types, higher resolution imaging, and detectability regardless of the data acquisition system used. A reverse-time migration (RTM) imaging algorithm was combined with a numerical simulator-the three-dimensional (3D) elastodynamic finite integration technique (EFIT)-to provide multi-mode damage imaging. The approach was applied to two simulated case studies featuring damaged isotropic plates. Sensitivities of damage type to wave mode were investigated by separating the A0 and S0 Lamb wave modes obtained from the resultant RTM wavefields.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) of aircraft composite structure is helpful to increase reliability and reduce maintenance costs. Due to the great effectiveness in distinguishing particular guided wave modes and identifying the propagation direction, the spatial-wavenumber filter technique has emerged as an interesting SHM topic. In this paper, a new scanning spatial-wavenumber filter (SSWF) based imaging method for multiple damages is proposed to conduct on-line monitoring of aircraft composite structures. Firstly, an on-line multi-damage SSWF is established, including the fundamental principle of SSWF for multiple damages based on a linear piezoelectric (PZT) sensor array, and a corresponding wavenumber-time imaging mechanism by using the multi-damage scattering signal. Secondly, through combining the on-line multi-damage SSWF and a PZT 2D cross-shaped array, an image-mapping method is proposed to conduct wavenumber synthesis and convert the two wavenumber-time images obtained by the PZT 2D cross-shaped array to an angle-distance image, from which the multiple damages can be directly recognized and located. In the experimental validation, both simulated multi-damage and real multi-damage introduced by repeated impacts are performed on a composite plate structure. The maximum localization error is less than 2 cm, which shows good performance of the multi-damage imaging method. Compared with the existing spatial-wavenumber filter based damage evaluation methods, the proposed method requires no more than the multi-damage scattering signal and can be performed without depending on any wavenumber modeling or measuring. Besides, this method locates multiple damages by imaging instead of the geometric method, which helps to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, it can be easily applied to on-line multi-damage monitoring of aircraft composite structures.

The results of Lamb wave identification for the aerospace structures could be easily affected by the nonlinear-dispersion characteristics. In this paper, dispersion compensation of Lamb waves is of particular concern. Compared with the similar research works on the traditional signal domain transform methods, this study is based on signal construction from the viewpoint of nonlinear wavenumber linearization. Two compensation methods of linearly-dispersive signal construction (LDSC) and non-dispersive signal construction (NDSC) are proposed. Furthermore, to improve the compensation effect, the influence of the signal construction process on the other crucial signal properties, including the signal waveform and amplitude spectrum, is considered during the investigation. The linear-dispersion and non-dispersion effects are firstly analyzed. Then, after the basic signal construction principle is explored, the numerical realization of LDSC and NDSC is discussed, in which the signal waveform and amplitude spectrum preservation is especially regarded. Subsequently, associated with the delay-and-sum algorithm, LDSC or NDSC is employed for high spatial resolution damage imaging, so that the adjacent multi-damage or quantitative imaging capacity of Lamb waves can be strengthened. To verify the proposed signal construction and damage imaging methods, the experimental and numerical validation is finally arranged on the aluminum plates.
