RESUMEN

In clinical bacteriology laboratories, reading and processing of sterile plates remain a significant part of the routine workload (30%-40% of the plates). Here, an algorithm was developed for bacterial growth detection starting with any type of specimens and using the most common media in bacteriology. The growth prediction performance of the algorithm for automatic processing of sterile plates was evaluated not only at 18-24 h and 48 h but also at earlier timepoints toward the development of an early growth monitoring system. A total of 3,844 plates inoculated with representative clinical specimens were used. The plates were imaged 15 times, and two different microbiologists read the images randomly and independently, creating 99,944 human ground truths. The algorithm was able, at 48 h, to discriminate growth from no growth with a sensitivity of 99.80% (five false-negative [FN] plates out of 3,844) and a specificity of 91.97%. At 24 h, sensitivity and specificity reached 99.08% and 93.37%, respectively. Interestingly, during human truth reading, growth was reported as early as 4 h, while at 6 h, half of the positive plates were already showing some growth. In this context, automated early growth monitoring in case of normally sterile samples is envisioned to provide added value to the microbiologists, enabling them to prioritize reading and to communicate early detection of bacterial growth to the clinicians.

OBJECTIVE: To compare morbidity, as measured by length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), in twin and singleton gestations classified as small-for-gestational age (SGA) according to estimated fetal weight < 10th percentile on twin or singleton growth charts. METHODS: NICU length of stay was compared in 1150 twins and 29 035 singletons that underwent ultrasound assessment between 35 + 0 and 36 + 6 weeks' gestation. Estimated fetal weight was obtained from measurements of head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length using the Hadlock formula. Gestational age was derived from the first-trimester crown-rump length measurement, using the larger of the two twins. Singletons and twins were compared in terms of NICU admission rate and length of stay according to classification as SGA by the Fetal Medicine Foundation singleton and twin reference distributions. RESULTS: The overall proportions of twins and singletons admitted to NICU were similar (7.3% vs 7.4%), but twins tended to have longer lengths of stay in NICU (≥ 7 days: 2.4% vs 0.8%; relative risk (RR), 3.0 (95% CI, 1.6-4.4)). Using the singleton chart, a higher proportion of twins were classified as SGA compared with singletons (37.6% vs 7.0%). However, the proportion of SGA neonates entering NICU was similar (10.2% for twins and 10.1% for singletons) and the proportion of SGA neonates spending ≥ 7 days in NICU was substantially higher for twins compared with singletons (3.7% vs 1.4%; RR, 2.6 (95% CI, 1.4-4.7)). CONCLUSIONS: When singleton charts are used to define SGA in twins and in singletons, there is a greater degree of growth-related neonatal morbidity amongst SGA twins compared with SGA singletons. Consequently, singleton charts do not inappropriately overdiagnose fetal growth restriction in twins and they should be used for monitoring fetal growth in both twins and singletons. © 2023 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

OBJECTIVE: To derive reference distributions of estimated fetal weight (EFW) in twins relative to singletons. METHODS: Gestational-age- and chorionicity-specific reference distributions for singleton percentiles and EFW were fitted to data on 4391 twin pregnancies with two liveborn fetuses from four European centers, including 3323 dichorionic (DC) and 1068 monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancies. Gestational age was derived using the larger of the two crown-rump length measurements obtained during the first trimester of pregnancy. EFW was obtained from ultrasound measurements of head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length using the Hadlock formula. Singleton percentiles were obtained using the Fetal Medicine Foundation population weight charts for singleton pregnancies. Hierarchical models were fitted to singleton Z-scores with autoregressive terms for serial correlations within the same fetus and between twins from the same pregnancy. Separate models were fitted for DC and MCDA twins. RESULTS: Fetuses from twin pregnancies tended to be smaller than singletons at the earliest gestational ages (16 weeks for MCDA and 20 weeks for DC twins). This was followed by a period of catch-up growth until around 24 weeks. After that, both DC and MCDA twins showed reduced growth. In DC twins, the EFW corresponding to the 50th percentile was at the 50th percentile of singleton pregnancies at 23 weeks, the 43rd percentile at 28 weeks, the 32nd percentile at 32 weeks and the 22nd percentile at 36 weeks. In MCDA twins, the EFW corresponding to the 50th percentile was at the 36th percentile of singleton pregnancies at 24 weeks, the 29th percentile at 28 weeks, the 19th percentile at 32 weeks and the 12th percentile at 36 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: In DC and, to a greater extent, MCDA twin pregnancies, fetal growth is reduced compared with that observed in singleton pregnancies. Furthermore, after 24 weeks, the divergence in growth trajectories between twin and singleton pregnancies becomes more pronounced as gestational age increases. © 2023 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

BACKGROUND: Growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) is a nutritional intervention designed to identify and address growth faltering before a child's nutritional status deteriorates into severe malnutrition. Despite GMP being recognized as a priority in Ethiopia's national nutrition program, there is no national aggregated figure to show the extent of GMP service utilization. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess GMP service utilization and associated factors in Ethiopia. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, Hinari, EMBASE, Scopus, and grey literature sources like Google Scholar, WorldCat, and Institutional repository. The Joanna Briggs Institution (JBI) quality assessment tool was used to appraise the quality of the articles, and articles scoring > 50% were included in the analysis. The pooled prevalence and odds ratio of associated factors with 95%CI was computed using STATA version 16. A random-effect model was employed to estimate the effect size, and I-squared statistics and Egger's test were used to assess heterogeneity and identify potential publication bias, respectively. Subgroup analysis was conducted with publication year, sample size, and region to identify the source of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Nine studies with 4,768 study participants were included in this meta-analysis. The overall pooled utilization of GMP service among children under two years of age in Ethiopia was 23.21% (95% CI: 16.02, 30.41, I2 = 97.27% & P = 0.0001). Mothers who received counselling on GMP service (OR = 3.16 (95%CI: 2.49-4.00), parents who use family health card (FHC) (OR = 3.29 (95%CI: 1.49-7.28), and mother who use postnatal care (OR = 3.93 (95%CI: 2.40-6.42), and Anti natal care (OR = 3.15 (95%CI: 1.29-7.69) were the factors associated with GMP service utilization among children under two years of age. CONCLUSIONS: The utilization of GMP services among children under the age of two in Ethiopia remains inadequate. Therefore, it is crucial to provide health education and counselling focusing on GMP to the mothers/caregivers of the child and encourage utilization of FHC. In addition, integrating GMP with other maternal health services should be promoted.

Chestnut and chestnut byproducts are of worldwide interest, so there is a constant need to develop faster and more accurate monitoring techniques. Recent advances in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms and user accessibility have led to increased use of handheld mobile laser scanning (HHLS) in precision agriculture. We propose a tree growth monitoring methodology, based on HHLS point cloud processing, that calculates the length of branches through spatial discretization of the point cloud for each tree. The methodology was tested by comparing two point clouds collected almost simultaneously for each of a set of sweet chestnut trees. The results obtained indicated that our HHLS method was reliable and accurate in efficiently monitoring sweet chestnut tree growth. The same methodology was used to calculate the growth of the same set of trees over 37 weeks (from spring to winter). Differences in week 0 and week 37 scans showed an approximate mean growth of 0.22 m, with a standard deviation of around 0.16 m reflecting heterogeneous tree growth.

RESUMEN

The study protocol focuses on DBM, proposing a preventive strategy for mother-child pairs that would be accessible, affordable, sustainable, and human-centred. The aim is to guide the development of tools and technologies, passing through stages for gathering a process and presenting health data. The initial stage identifies the rules and models synthesising existing digital interventions combating forms of malnourishment, followed by designing and developing a Nutrition Informatics Intervention, i.e. NAIK. The last stage includes evaluation of the effectiveness and utility of NAIK. The system aims to address malnutrition by assessing different associated elements, with the participants. An SMS system will provide follow-up assistance. Overall, this study is an amalgamation of technology, data collection, personalised interventions, growth monitoring, and education to address malnutrition effectively by promoting positive health-behaviours within the community. So, a computerised health kiosk will help provide preventive strategies from the healthcare professional, especially in circumstances requiring immediate attention.

Suaahara, an at-scale multisectoral nutrition programme in Nepal, aimed to advance knowledge and skills of frontline health workers to improve the quality of nutrition and health services at health facility and community levels. This study assessed the impact of Suaahara interventions on knowledge and skills of health facility workers and Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs). The study used a quasi-experimental design in which four Suaahara intervention districts were compared with pair-matched comparison districts. One health facility worker and three FCHVs from each survey cluster were included. Baseline survey consisted of 93 health facility workers (2015) and 118 FCHVs (2012), and endline survey (2022) consisted of 40 health facility workers and 120 FCHVs. Difference-in-differences regression models employing intent-to-treat analysis, accounting for clustering at the district level, assessed the impact of intervention. The intervention, relative to comparison, had no effect on health facility workers' knowledge. There was a positive effect, however, on FCHVs' knowledge in intervention relative to comparison areas on exclusive breastfeeding, timing of introduction of complementary feeding, sick child feeding and growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) for children under 2 years. Health facility workers and FCHVs in intervention versus comparison districts had higher endline scores for skills related to measuring the weight of children and pregnant women, measuring the height/length of children, conducting GMP for children under 2 years and identifying malnourished children. Suaahara interventions improved the capacity of health workers, particularly nutrition-related knowledge among FCHVs and GMP-related skills of both health facility workers and FCHVs.

OBJECTIVES: Prenatal growth affects short- and long-term morbidity, mortality and growth, yet communication between prenatal and postnatal healthcare teams is often minimal. This paper aims to develop an integrated, interdisciplinary framework for foetal/infant growth assessment, contributing to the continuity of care across the first 1000 d of life. DESIGN: A multidisciplinary think-tank met regularly over many months to share and debate their practice and research experience related to foetal/infant growth assessment. Participants' personal practice and knowledge were verified against and supplemented by published research. SETTING: Online and in-person brainstorming sessions of growth assessment practices that are feasible and valuable in resource-limited, low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings. PARTICIPANTS: A group of obstetricians, paediatricians, dietitians/nutritionists and a statistician. RESULTS: Numerous measurements, indices and indicators were identified for growth assessment in the first 1000 d. Relationships between foetal, neonatal and infant measurements were elucidated and integrated into an interdisciplinary framework. Practices relevant to LMIC were then highlighted: antenatal Doppler screening, comprehensive and accurate birth anthropometry (including proportionality of weight, length and head circumference), placenta weighing and incorporation of length-for-age, weight-for-length and mid-upper arm circumference in routine growth monitoring. The need for appropriate, standardised clinical records and corresponding policies to guide clinical practice and facilitate interdisciplinary communication over time became apparent. CONCLUSIONS: Clearer communication between prenatal, perinatal and postnatal health care providers, within the framework of a common understanding of growth assessment and a supportive policy environment, is a prerequisite to continuity of care and optimal health and development outcomes.

AIMS: The overarching aim of this study was to evaluate the Norwegian guidelines for growth monitoring using routinely collected data from healthy children up to five years of age. We analysed criteria for both status (size for age) and change (centile crossing) in growth. METHODS: Longitudinal data were obtained from the electronic health record (EHR) at the well-baby clinic for 2130 children included in the Bergen growth study 1 (BGS1). Measurements of length, weight, weight-for-length, body mass index (BMI) and head circumference were converted to z-scores and compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards and the national growth reference. RESULTS: Using the WHO growth standard, the proportion of children above +2SD was generally higher than the expected 2.3% for all traits at birth and for length at all ages. Crossing percentile channels was common during the first two years of life, particularly for length/height. By the age of five years, 37.9% of the children had been identified for follow-up regarding length/height, 33% for head circumference and 13.6% for high weight-for-length/BMI. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of children beyond the normal limits of the charts is higher than expected, and a surprisingly large number of children were identified for rules concerning length or growth in head circumference. This suggests the need for a revision of the current guidelines for growth monitoring in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Regular growth monitoring can be used to evaluate young children's nutritional and physical health. While adequate evaluation of the scope and quality of nutrition interventions is necessary to increase their effectiveness, there is little research on growth monitoring coverage measurement. The purpose of this study was to investigate socioeconomic disparities in under-5 Rwandan children who participate in growth monitoring and nutrition promotion. METHODS: We used data from the 2019-2020 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS), which included 8092under-5 children. Percentage was employed in univariate analysis. To examine the socioeconomic inequalities, concentration indices and Lorenz curves were used in growth monitoring and nutrition promotion among under-5 children. RESULTS: A weighted prevalence of 33.0% (95%CI: 30.6-35.6%) under-5 children growth monitoring and nutrition promotion was estimated. Growth monitoring and nutrition promotion among under-5 children had higher uptake in the most disadvantaged cohort, as the line of equality sags below the diagonal line in Lorenz curve. Overall, there was pro-poor growth monitoring and nutrition promotion among under-5 in Rwanda (Conc. Index = 0.0994; SE = 0.0111). Across the levels of child and mother's characteristics, the results show higher coverage of under-5 growth monitoring and nutrition promotion in the most socioeconomic disadvantaged cohort. CONCLUSION: The study found a pro-poor disparity in growth monitoring and nutrition promotion among under-5 children in Rwanda. By implication, the most disadvantaged children had a higher uptake of growth monitoring and nutrition promotion. The Rwanda government should develop policies and programmes to achieve the universal health coverage for the well-off and underserved population.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-2 aims to eliminate child hunger or end all forms of child malnutrition by 2030. To achieve this goal the cost-effective method is the implementation of growth monitoring and promotion service with the contribution of Women Development Army (WDA) as community volunteers. However, According to the data, the program's implementation varies throughout the country and lack of evidence on the practical contribution of the WDA to enhancing child nutritional care outcomes. Therefore this study aimed to determine practical contribution of WDA and associated factors on growth monitoring and promotion service in two rural districts of central Gondar zone, Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A community based mixed study was conducted from March 6 to April 7, 2022 among 615 Women Development Army. Multistage sampling technique was used to select study participants. A structured questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data and in-depth interview were used to generate qualitative information. Qualitative data were coded and grouped and discussed using identified themes. Binary logistic regression was fitted, odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was estimated to identify factors of practical contribution of WDA and qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: In this study practical contribution of WDA on growth monitoring was 31.4% (95% CI: 28.0-35.3%). Having GMP training (AOR = 4.2, 95%CI: 1.63, 10.58), regular community conversation (AOR = 6.0, 95%CI: 3.12, 11.54), good knowledge about GMP (AOR = 2.1, 95%CI: 1.17, 3.83) and not having regular schedule of GMP service in the area (AOR = 0.04, 95%CI: 0.02, 0.09), were statistically significantly associated with practical contribution of growth monitoring. During in-depth interview, lack of training, low motivation or commitment among WDA and low communication between WDA and health extension workers were mentioned among the problems faced during growth monitoring service. CONCLUSION: In this study, practical contribution of growth monitoring among WDA was low. GMP training regular community conversation, knowledge about GMP and regular schedule of GMP service in the local area were significantly associated for practical contribution of growth monitoring service. Lack of training, low motivation or commitment among WDA and low communication between WDA and health extension workers were reasons for did not contribute effectively for GMP service. Therefore, giving training for WDA and improving community conversation at kebeles level are important to improve GM service. .

Considering the rising concern over climate change and the need for local food security, productive blue-green roofs (PBGR) can be an effective solution to mitigate many relevant environmental issues. However, their cost of operation is high because they are intensive, and an economical operation and maintenance approach will render them as more viable alternative. Low-cost sensors with the Internet of Things can provide reliable solutions to the real-time management and distributed monitoring of such roofs through monitoring the plant as well soil conditions. This research assesses the extent to which a low-cost image sensor can be deployed to perform continuous, automated monitoring of a urban rooftop farm as a PBGR and evaluates the thermal performance of the roof for additional crops. An RGB-depth image sensor was used in this study to monitor crop growth. Images collected from weekly scans were processed by segmentation to estimate the plant heights of three crops species. The devised technique performed well for leafy and tall stem plants like okra, and the correlation between the estimated and observed growth characteristics was acceptable. For smaller plants, bright light and shadow considerably influenced the image quality, decreasing the precision. Six other crop species were monitored using a wireless sensor network to investigate how different crop varieties respond in terms of thermal performance. Celery, snow peas, and potato were measured with maximum daily cooling records, while beet and zucchini showed sound cooling effects in terms of mean daily cooling.

Microalgae have become a popular area of research over the past few decades due to their enormous benefits to various sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and food and feed. Nevertheless, the benefits of microalgae cannot be fully exploited without the optimization of their upstream production. The growth of microalgae is commonly measured based on the optical density of the sample. However, the presence of debris in the culture and the optical absorption of the intercellular components affect the accuracy of this measurement. As a solution, this paper introduces the direct optical detection of glucose molecules at 940-960 nm to accurately measure the growth of microalgae. In addition, this paper also discusses the effects of the presence of glucose on the absorption of free water molecules in the culture. The potential of the optical detection of glucose as a complement to the commonly used optical density measurement at 680 nm is discussed in this paper. Lastly, a few recommendations for future works are presented to further verify the credibility of glucose detection for the accurate determination of microalgae's growth.

Growth indices can quantify crop productivity and establish optimal environmental, nutritional, and irrigation control strategies. A convolutional neural network (CNN)-based model is presented for estimating various growth indices (i.e., fresh weight, dry weight, height, leaf area, and diameter) of four varieties of greenhouse lettuce using red, green, blue, and depth (RGB-D) data obtained using a stereo camera. Data from an online autonomous greenhouse challenge (Wageningen University, June 2021) were employed in this study. The data were collected using an Intel RealSense D415 camera. The developed model has a two-stage CNN architecture based on ResNet50V2 layers. The developed model provided coefficients of determination from 0.88 to 0.95, with normalized root mean square errors of 6.09%, 6.30%, 7.65%, 7.92%, and 5.62% for fresh weight, dry weight, height, diameter, and leaf area, respectively, on unknown lettuce images. Using red, green, blue (RGB) and depth data employed in the CNN improved the determination accuracy for all five lettuce growth indices due to the ability of the stereo camera to extract height information on lettuce. The average time for processing each lettuce image using the developed CNN model run on a Jetson SUB mini-PC with a Jetson Xavier NX was 0.83 s, indicating the potential for the model in fast real-time sensing of lettuce growth indices.

South Africa has a documented high prevalence of stunting and increasing obesity in children as well as obesity in adults. The double burden of malnutrition, which can be on an individual-, household- or population level, has implications for both health and the economic development of a community and country. This paper describes a large-scale survey (N = 774) of infant feeding, growth monitoring and anthropometry among mother and child pairs aged 6 months of age in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa, conducted between January and August 2017. Among children, a large increase in the prevalence of stunting and obesity was seen between birth and 6 months of age increasing from 9.3% to 21.7% and 4.0% to 21.0%, respectively. 32.1% of the mothers were overweight [body mass index (BMI): 25.0-29.9] and 28.4% had obesity grade 1 (BMI: 30-<40). Although most mothers (93%; 563/605) initiated breastfeeding, the introduction of other foods started early with 17.6% (56/319) of the mothers having started giving other fluids or food to their child within the first month. At 6 months 70.6% (427/605) children were still breastfed and 23.5% were exclusively breastfed. In addition, we found that length measurements were done less frequently than weight measurements between birth and 6 months, on average 2.2 (SD: 1.3) versus 5.8 (SD: 1.5) times. Moreover, there is a need for improvement of health worker training and understanding regarding anthropometric measurements when assessing malnutrition in children in the clinics. Early detection and improved infant feeding practices are key in preventing both stunting and obesity in children.

Weight-for-age (WFA) growth faltering often precedes severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in children, yet it is often missed during routine growth monitoring. Automated interpretation of WFA growth within electronic health records could expedite the identification of children at risk of SAM. This study aimed to develop an automated screening tool to predict SAM risk from WFA growth, and to determine its predictive ability compared with simple changes in weight or WFA z-score. To develop the screening tool, South African child growth experts (n = 30) rated SAM risk on 100 WFA growth curves, which were then used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to assess SAM risk from consecutive WFA z-scores. The ANN was validated in 185 children under five (63 SAM cases; 122 controls) using diagnostic accuracy methodology. The ANN's performance was compared with that of changes in weight or WFA z-score. Even though experts' SAM risk ratings of the WFA growth curves differed considerably, the ANN achieved a sensitivity of 73.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 60.3; 83.4), specificity of 86.1% (95% CI: 78.6; 91.7) and receiver-operating characteristic curve area of 0.795 (95% CI: 0.732; 0.859) during validation with real cases, outperforming changes in weight or WFA z-scores. The ANN, as an automated screening tool, could markedly improve the identification of children at risk of SAM using routinely collected WFA growth information.

BACKGROUND: More than half of all deaths in under 5 children is related to malnutrition. Child malnutrition could be prevented through regular monitoring of the growth and development of children and the implementation of growth promotion activities referred to as growth monitoring and promotion (GMP). Mothers'/caregivers utilization of these activities through child welfare clinics could improve the growth and development of under 5 children. We evaluated mothers' knowledge on GMP, utilization and associated factors among mother-child pairs from a poor socio-economic district in Northern Ghana. METHODS: Using an analytical cross-sectional design, participants included mothers with children aged 0-59 months, grouped into 0-11 months, 12-23 months and 24-59 months. A semi-structured questionnaire containing both closed- and open-ended questions was used to collect data. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify determinants of GMP utilization. RESULTS: Four hundred mother-child pairs were included in the study. Overall, 28.5% (n = 114) of the mothers utilized GMP services. Almost 60%(n = 237) of the mothers knew the recommended age to seek for GMP service for their children. Only 9% of the mothers could correctly interpret the directions of the growth curves in their children's Health Record booklet. Mothers with children aged 0-11 months were 3.9 times more likely (p = 0.009) to utilize GMP services compared to their counterparts with children aged 12-23 months and 24-59 months. Mothers who had low level of knowledge were 2.19 times (p = 0.003) more likely to utilize GMP services compared to their counterparts with high level of knowledge.. CONCLUSION: Utilization of GMP services was low and particularly lower in children aged 24-59 months. Mothers' knowledge in GMP was optimal although there were notable gaps.

Plants are primary resources for oxygen and foods whose production is fundamental for our life. However, diseases and pests may interfere with plant growth and cause a significant reduction of both the quality and quantity of agriculture products. Increasing agricultural productivity is crucial for poverty reduction and food security improvements. For this reason, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development gives a central role to agriculture by promoting a strong technological innovation for advancing sustainable practices at the plant level. To accomplish this aim, recently, wearable sensors and flexible electronics have been extended from humans to plants for measuring elongation, microclimate, and stressing factors that may affect the plant's healthy growth. Unexpectedly, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), which are very popular in health monitoring applications ranging from civil infrastructures to the human body, are still overlooked for the agriculture sector. In this work, for the first time, plant wearables based on FBG technology are proposed for the continuous and simultaneous monitoring of plant growth and environmental parameters (i.e., temperature and humidity) in real settings. The promising results demonstrated the feasibility of FBG-based sensors to work in real situations by holding the promise to advance continuous and accurate plant health growth monitoring techniques.

Preterm birth and abnormal foetal growth increase the risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Timely identification of foetuses at risk is critical to improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. The objective of this study was to increase understanding of the quality of foetal growth monitoring during antenatal care in Tanzania. Between 2015 and 2017, 13 women were followed throughout their pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period. Participants were recruited using a staggered approach at selected health facilities. Data collection included direct observations of 25 of 48 antenatal care consultations, review of the women's antenatal cards, 88 in-depth interviews and participant observation at the health facilities. Six women had facility births and seven had home births. There was one stillbirth, one preterm birth and two term infants died between the age of 3-6 months. Of the 9 newborns with a known birthweight, 3 were possibly growth-restricted. During 12 ANC visits (25%) Symphysis-Fundal Height (SFH) was not recorded and during 22 visits (46%) the recorded Gestational Age (GA) was incorrect. Despite regular assessment of SFH, three possible growth-restricted infants remained undetected. There is a need to improve nurse-midwives ability to determine a reliable GA and improve critical reflection on SFH measurement.

Infants born preterm, low birthweight or with other perinatal complications require frequent and accurate growth monitoring for optimal nutrition and growth. We implemented an mHealth tool to improve growth monitoring and nutritional status assessment of high risk infants. We conducted a pre-post quasi-experimental study with a concurrent control group among infants enrolled in paediatric development clinics in two rural Rwandan districts. During the pre-intervention period (August 2017-January 2018), all clinics used standard paper-based World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts. During the intervention period (August 2018-January 2019), Kirehe district adopted an mHealth tool for child growth monitoring and nutritional status assessment. Data on length/height; weight; length/height-for-age (L/HFA), weight-for-length/height (WFL/H) and weight-for-age (WFA) z-scores; and interval growth were tracked at each visit. We conducted a 'difference-in-difference' analysis to assess whether the mHealth tool was associated with greater improvements in completion and accuracy of nutritional assessments and nutritional status at 2 and 6 months of age. We observed 3529 visits. mHealth intervention clinics showed significantly greater improvements on completeness for corrected age (endline: 65% vs. 55%; p = 0.036), L/HFA (endline: 82% vs. 57%; p ≤ 0.001), WFA (endline: 93% vs. 67%; p ≤ 0.001) and WFL/H (endline: 90% vs. 59%; p ≤ 0.001) z-scores compared with control sites. Accuracy of growth monitoring did not improve. Prevalence of stunting, underweight and inadequate interval growth at 6-months corrected age decreased significantly more in the intervention clinics than in control clinics. Results suggest that integrating mHealth nutrition interventions is feasible and can improve child nutrition outcomes. Improved tool design may better promote accuracy.
