BACKGROUND: Individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or gender-nonconforming (LGBTQ+) experience discrimination and minority stress that may lead to elevated cancer risk. METHODS: In the absence of population-based cancer occurrence information for this population, this article comprehensively examines contemporary, age-adjusted cancer risk factor and screening prevalence using data from the National Health Interview Survey, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and National Youth Tobacco Survey, and provides a literature review of cancer incidence and barriers to care. RESULTS: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults are more likely to smoke cigarettes than heterosexual adults (16% compared to 12% in 2021-2022), with the largest disparity among bisexual women. For example, 34% of bisexual women aged 40-49 years and 24% of those 50 and older smoke compared to 12% and 11%, respectively, of heterosexual women. Smoking is also elevated among youth who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (4%) or transgender (5%) compared to heterosexual or cisgender (1%). Excess body weight is elevated among lesbian and bisexual women (68% vs. 61% among heterosexual women), largely due to higher obesity prevalence among bisexual women (43% vs. 38% among lesbian women and 33% among heterosexual women). Bisexual women also have a higher prevalence of no leisure-time physical activity (35% vs. 28% among heterosexual women), as do transgender individuals (30%-31% vs. 21%-25% among cisgender individuals). Heavier alcohol intake among lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals is confined to bisexual women, with 14% consuming more than 7 drinks/week versus 6% of heterosexual women. In contrast, prevalence of cancer screening and risk reducing vaccinations in LGBTQ+ individuals is similar to or higher than their heterosexual/cisgender counterparts except for lower cervical and colorectal cancer screening among transgender men. CONCLUSIONS: People within the LGBTQ+ population have a higher prevalence of smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption compared to heterosexual and cisgender people, suggesting a higher cancer burden. Health systems have an opportunity to help inform these disparities through the routine collection of information on sexual orientation and gender identity to facilitate cancer surveillance and to mitigate them through education to increase awareness of LGBTQ+ health needs.

Social bonds increase fitness in a range of mammals. One pathway by which social bonds may increase fitness is by reducing the exposure to physiological stress, i.e. glucocorticoid (GC) hormones, that can be detrimental to health and survival. This is achieved through downregulating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis activity. Indeed, long-term measures of social (grooming) bonds are often negatively correlated with HPA-axis activity. However, the proximate role of physical touch through allogrooming remains an open question in the sociality-health-fitness debate. Demonstrating the potential anxiolytic benefits of grooming in the wild is hindered by methodological limitations. Here, we match accelerometer-identified grooming in wild female chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) to non-invasive faecal GC metabolite concentrations (fGCs). Consistent with previous work, we found a negative (but statistically non-significant) overall relationship between individual averaged fGCs and grooming rates. However, when time-matching grooming to fGCs, we found that both more giving and receiving grooming were followed by higher fGCs. This upregulation of HPA-axis activity suggests that maintaining social bonds (and its ultimate fitness benefits) may come at a shorter-term physiological cost. This finding sheds new light on a ubiquitous social behaviour typically considered 'relaxing' and suggests that sociopositive contact can trigger physiological stress.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of multiple protection model in the operating room on patients' physiological stress and risk events after coronary artery stent implantation (CASI). METHODS: During October 2021 to October 2022, 150 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) were picked as the research subjects, all of whom underwent CASI. The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed, and the patients were divided into two groups according to different nursing methods, with 75 cases in each group. Patients in the intervention group received multiple protection model intervention in the operating room, and the patients in the control group adopted conventional care model. The patient satisfaction with nursing, postoperative recovery, psychological stress scores, physiological stress indicators, and adverse cardiac risk events were recorded. RESULTS: Patients in the intervention group had much higher percentage of the patient satisfaction with nursing than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The time to get out of bed and hospital stay was significantly shorter and the 6-min walking distance was markedly longer in the intervention group than the control (P < 0.05). The Hamilton Anxiety (HAMA) scale and Hamilton Depression (HAMD) scale score of patients in two groups were sharply decreased after the intervention (P < 0.05), which were strongly lower in the intervention group than the control (P < 0.001). After the intervention, the heart rate, cortisol and epinephrine of patients were all sensibly elevated in two groups (P < 0.05), which were all memorably lower in the intervention group than the control (P < 0.001). The incidence of adverse cardiac risk events in the intervention group was 5.33%, which was dramatically lower than 16.00% in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The application of multiple protection model in the operating room on patients undergoing coronary stent implantation promoted postoperative recovery, reduced patients' psychological and physiological stress, maintained blood pressure and other vital signs, reduced the incidence of adverse cardiac risk events, and improved the patient satisfaction with nursing.

Prenatal fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and maternal psychological functioning have been associated with child cognitive outcomes, though their independent and joint impacts on earlier behavioral outcomes remains less studied. We used data from 382 mother-child pairs from a prospective birth cohort in Mexico City. Temperament was measured at 24 months using the Carey Toddler Temperament Scale (TTS). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to update the factor structure of the TTS. During pregnancy, mothers completed the Crisis in Family Systems-Revised, Edinburgh Depression Scale, pregnancy-specific anxiety scale, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Pregnancy PM2.5 was assessed using estimates from a satellite-based exposure model. We assessed the association between prenatal maternal stress and PM2.5 on temperament, in both independent and joint models. Quantile g-computation was used to estimate the joint associations. Models were adjusted for maternal age, SES, education, child sex, and child age. In EFA, we identified three temperament factors related to effortful control, extraversion, and negative affect. Our main results showed that higher levels of PM2.5 and several of the maternal psychological functioning measures were related to both effortful control and negative affect in the child, both individually and as a mixture. For instance, a one quartile increase in the prenatal mixture was associated with higher negative affect scores in the child (0.34, 95% CI: 0.16, 0.53). We observed modification of these associations by maternal SES, with associations seen only among lower SES participants for both effortful control (-0.45, 95% CI: -0.70, -0.20) and negative affect outcomes (0.60, 95% CI: 0.35, 0.85). Prenatal PM2.5 and maternal psychological functioning measures were associated with toddler temperament outcomes, providing evidence for impacts of chemical and non-chemical stressors on early child health.

In addition to being required for protein synthesis, ribosomes and ribosomal proteins (RPs) also regulate messenger RNA translation in uninfected and virus-infected cells. By individually depleting 85 RPs using RNA interference, we found that overall protein synthesis in uninfected primary fibroblasts was more sensitive to RP depletion than those infected with herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). Although representative RP depletion (uL3, uS4, uL5) inhibited protein synthesis in cells infected with two different DNA viruses (human cytomegalovirus, vaccinia virus), HSV-1-infected cell protein synthesis unexpectedly endured and required a single virus-encoded gene product, VP22. During individual RP insufficiency, VP22-expressing HSV-1 replicated better than a VP22-deficient variant. Furthermore, VP22 promotes polysome accumulation in virus-infected cells when uL3 or ribosome availability is limiting and cosediments with initiating and elongating ribosomes in infected and uninfected cells. This identifies VP22 as a virus-encoded, ribosome-associated protein that compensates for RP insufficiency to support viral protein synthesis and replication. Moreover, it reveals an unanticipated class of virus-encoded, ribosome-associated effectors that reduce the dependence of protein synthesis upon host RPs and broadly support translation during physiological stress such as infection.

Quantifying physiological stress in wild animals is essential for understanding their health, reproductive success, and survival in a variable environment. The yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventer) study at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory near Crested Butte, Colorado, USA is the world's second longest study of free-living mammals. Historically, we used a validated corticosterone radioimmunoassay (RIA) to measure fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (FGMs) as a proxy for physiological stress. However, the costs and risks associated with working with radioisotopes drove us to consider a more sustainable method. Here we evaluate the suitability of two competitive corticosterone enzyme assays (EIA), one from Cayman Chemical Company (CCC) and one from Arbor Assays (AA), to measure marmot FGMs via their cross-reaction. The findings revealed that the AA EIA better matched the RIA in terms of accuracy across high and low FGM concentrations, had superior assay parameters, showed the highest correlations with RIA results and effectively captured the annual variations in FGM concentrations, thus demonstrating its reliability for use in longitudinal studies. We further analytically validated the AA EIA for FGMs and confirmed its efficacy and lack of matrix effects, thus establishing its suitability for ongoing and future studies of FGMs in marmots. The transition to the AA EIA from the RIA ensures continued data integrity while enhancing safety and environmental sustainability.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) frequently face multiple stressors at work, particularly those working night shifts. HCWs who have experienced distress may find it difficult to adopt stress management approaches, even if they are aware of the effects of stress and coping processes. Therefore, an individualized intervention may be required to assist distressed HCWs in bridging the "knowledge-practice" gap in stress management and effectively alleviating stress symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this research was to compare the effects of a complex interactive multimodal intervention (CIMI) to self-guided stress management interventions on stress symptoms of distressed HCWs, as measured by physiological (heart rate variability), psychological (perceived stress, mental distress, and subjective happiness), and sleep disorder (fatigue and sleepiness) indicators. METHODS: We conducted a nonrandomized, controlled study in 2 Chinese general hospitals. The participants in this study were 245 HCWs who fulfilled at least 1 of the 3 dimensions on the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale. All eligible individuals were required to complete a questionnaire and wear a 24-hour Holter device to determine the physiological signs of stress as indexed by heart rate variability at both baseline and after the intervention. The CIMI group received a 12-week online intervention with 4 components-mobile stress management instruction, a web-based WeChat social network, personalized feedback, and a nurse coach, whereas the control group simply received a self-guided intervention. RESULTS: After a 12-week intervention, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) scores reduced significantly in the CIMI group (mean difference [MD] -5.31, 95% CI -6.26 to -4.37; P<.001) compared to the baseline levels. The changes in PSS scores before and after the intervention exhibited a significant difference between the CIMI and control groups (d=-0.64; MD -4.03, 95% CI -5.91 to -2.14; P<.001), and the effect was medium. In terms of physiological measures, both the control group (MD -9.56, 95% CI -16.9 to -2.2; P=.01) and the CIMI group (MD -8.45, 95% CI -12.68 to -4.22; P<.001) demonstrated a significant decrease in the standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) within the normal clinical range; however, there were no significant differences between the 2 groups (d=0.03; MD 1.11, 95% CI -7.38 to 9.59; P=.80). CONCLUSIONS: The CIMI was an effective intervention for improving sleep disorders, as well as parts of the psychological stress measures in distressed HCWs. The findings provide objective evidence for developing a mobile stress management intervention that is adaptable and accessible to distressed HCWs, but its long-term effects should be investigated in future research. This study aimed to systematically review fatigue responses following basketball match-play and during congested match schedules, considering performance, physiological, athlete-reported, and sleep-related outcomes. Relevant articles published until 23 January 2024 were searched using Scopus, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus. After screening, 44 studies were included in the systematic review. The main findings indicate that, in most cases, vertical jumping and linear sprinting showed significant decrements at match-end (<1 hour post-match) compared to pre-match [small-to-very large effect sizes (ES)], with persistent (≥1 hour post-match) impairments lasting 24-48 hours in jumping (only in males, small-to-very large ES) and linear sprinting (moderate-to-very large ES). Physiological changes generally included significant increases (moderate-to-very large ES) in cortisol and nutrient metabolism markers at match-end, alongside persistent increases in muscle damage (mainly at 13-72 hours post-match) and inflammation (13-48 hours). Finally, match-play generally increased muscle soreness (mainly at 24-48 hours, moderate-to-very large ES) and perceived fatigue (mainly at match-end), with unclear effects on mood, and no apparent impact on sleep-related outcomes. Research assessing congested match schedules is limited, although possible worsening in muscle damage, inflammation, perceived fatigue and well-being were observed in male players. Overall, these findings indicate an impairment in some of the reviewed performance, physiological, and athlete-reported outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The practise of paramedicine can be highly stressful particularly where urgent lifesaving decisions need to be made. Traditionally, educators have adopted the approach of placing students in simulated stressful situations as a way of learning to cope with these challenges. It is unclear from the literature whether traditional stress inoculation enhances or hinders learning. This scoping review aims to identify and examine both the peer-reviewed and grey literature reporting physiological stress responses to high-acuity scenarios in paramedicine and cognate healthcare disciplines. METHODS: Adhering strictly to JBI Evidence Synthesis Manual for conducting a scoping review, medical subject headings and areas, keywords and all other possible index terms were searched across EBSCOhost (Medline, CINAHL and APA PsycInfo), Scopus and, PubMed. English language articles both published (peer-reviewed academic papers, reports and conference proceedings) and unpublished (grey literature, Google Scholar reports) were included, and publications citing retrieved articles were also checked. RESULTS: Searches performed across five electronic databases identified 52 articles where abstracts indicated potential inclusion. From this, 22 articles which reported physiological or psychophysiological responses to stressful scenario-based education were included. CONCLUSION: This review identified that an acceptable level of stress during simulation can be beneficial, however a point can be exceeded where stress becomes a hinderance to learning resulting in underperformance. By identifying strategies to moderate the impact of acute stress, educators of paramedic and other healthcare students can utilise high-acuity clinical scenarios to their andragogical armamentarium which has the potential to improve real-world clinical outcomes.

Physical function is regarded as the cornerstone of healthy aging, and exercise is an important determinant of healthy aging. This study examined the feasibility and physiological (heart rate, blood pressure, blood lactate, and rate of perceived exertion) and psychological (enjoyment) response resulting from an acute progressive sled-push (SLP) exercise session using the novel XPO Sled Trainer in older adults and compared that with walking (WKC) condition. The exercise session comprised six exercise bouts at 75%, 85%, 100% (2×), and 125% (2×) of normal velocity with a 2-min rest between bouts. Thirty-six older adults were randomly allocated into either the SLP or WKC conditions. No adverse events were observed during the exercise session, and all participants completed the exercise protocol as prescribed. One-third of the participants in the SLP group reported minimal body discomfort. Significantly higher responses were observed for all physiological variables as the intensity of the exercise increased in the SLP group compared with the WKC group (p < .001). The SLP group presented a decline in enjoyment as the intensity of the exercise increased (during), but similar enjoyment level than the WKC group for the overall exercise session (p = .711). Our findings support the viability and safety of SLP exercise using the XPO Sled Trainer in older adults. Such exercise demonstrated an intensity-driven modality that may have potential to elucidate positive adaptations in the cardiovascular system of older adults with acceptable levels of enjoyment.

Estuaries are considered as key habitats for the early life stages of fish. However, in the face of massive destruction of many estuarine intertidal areas, management and conservation measures are needed. Fish condition indicators may be used as a proxy of habitat quality and provide valuable information for management of coastal areas. In this study, the larvae of golden mullet (Chelon auratus) and European glass eels (Anguilla anguilla) were sampled in three sites of the Gironde Estuary. Different lipid classes and fatty acids were quantified: phospholipids (globally, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine), triglycerides, omega-3 (particularly docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acids), omega-6 and C18:1. These biomarkers provide information on the nutritional status of the larvae as well as on prey availability and larvae diet between sites. One site significantly differed from the others as it seemed to offer abundant and better-quality prey. The very high levels of omega-3 contained in mullet larvae suggested that this site provided a high amount of diatoms. However, the mullet larvae that colonized this site also showed physiological stress that could be explained by exposure to pollutants through their prey. This work constitutes an essential baseline for developing biomarkers to assess the quality of habitats in a global change context.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Blood donation can be a potentially stressful event, leading to the activation of an acute stress response. Knowing and identifying potential stressors could help in optimizing the donation experience. The present study aimed to measure the physiological and psychological stress changes before, during and after blood donation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Physiological and psychological stress response was assessed in 70 blood donors. To evaluate physiological stress response, pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure (BP), beat-to-beat BP and lead II electrocardiogram were recorded. Baroreflex sensitivity was calculated using the available software. Psychological stress response was assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scale. RESULTS: A significant increase in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure was observed in the pre-donation period (p < 0.001). Among the time-domain parameters, SDSD (standard deviation of differences between adjacent respiratory rate intervals) and RMSSD (root mean square of the successive differences) were significantly lower during the post-donation period (p < 0.005, p < 0.007, respectively). Among the frequency-domain parameters, LF nu (relative power of the low-frequency band in normalized units), HF nu (relative power of the high-frequency band in normalized units) and LF% (relative power of the low-frequency band in percentage) were significantly lower before donation compared to during donation (p < 0.001, p < 0.001 and p < 0.012, respectively). LF nu, LF% and LF/HF ratio were also significantly lower during donation compared to after donation (p < 0.05, p < 0.016 and p < 0.042, respectively). Baroreflex sensitivity was also statistically higher during the pre-donation period. State score was significantly higher among the blood donors during the pre-donation period. CONCLUSION: Physiological and psychological stress is experienced by blood donors during the pre-donation period. A pre-donation informative conversation should be carried out with each blood donor and potential stressors should be identified in each.

The biological pathways which link lead (Pb) and long-term outcomes are unclear, though rodent models and a few human studies suggest Pb may alter the body's stress response systems, which over time, can elicit dysregulated stress responses with cumulative impacts. This study examined associations between prenatal and early childhood Pb exposure and adolescent allostatic load, an index of an individual's body burden of stress in multiple biological systems, and further examined sex-based associations. Among 391 (51% male) participants in the ELEMENT birth cohort, we related trimester-specific maternal blood Pb, 1-month postpartum maternal tibia and patella Pb, and child blood Pb at 12-24 months to an allostatic load index in adolescence comprised of biomarkers of cardiovascular, metabolic, neuroendocrine, and immune function. The results were overall mixed, with prenatal exposure, particularly maternal bone Pb, being positively associated with allostatic load, and early childhood Pb showing mixed results for males and females. In adjusted Poisson regression models, 1 mcg/g increase in tibia Pb was associated with a 1% change in expected allostatic load (IRR = 1.01; 95%CI 0.99, 1.02). We found a significant Pb × sex interaction (IRR = 1.05; 95%CI 1.01, 1.10); where males saw an increasing percent change in allostatic load as 12 month Pb levels increased compared to females who saw a decreasing allostatic load. Further examination of allostatic load will facilitate the determination of potential mechanistic pathways between developmental toxicant exposures and later-in-life cardiometabolic outcomes.

The current study presented the first meta-analytic review on the associations between the Big Five personality traits and stress measured under different conceptualizations (stressor exposure, psychological and physiological stress responses) using a total of 1,575 effect sizes drawn from 298 samples. Overall, neuroticism was found to be positively related to stress, whereas extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness were negatively linked to stress. When stress assessed under different conceptualizations was tested, only neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness were related to stressor exposure. All of the Big Five personality traits were significantly associated with psychological stress perception, whereas the five personality traits showed weak to null associations with physiological stress response. Further moderation analyses suggested that the associations between personality traits and stress under different conceptualizations were also contingent upon different characteristics of stress, sample, study design, and measures. The results supported the important role of personality traits in individual differences in stress.

AIMS: This study aims to examine the associations between paraoxonase 1 (PON)1 status and acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and consequent disabilities. METHODS: This study recruited 122 patients with AIS and 40 healthy controls and assessed the Q192R gene variants, arylesterase (AREase) and chloromethyl phenylacetate (CMPAase) activities, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc) in baseline conditions. AREase and CMPAase were measured 3 months later. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and the modified Rankin score (mRS) were assessed at baseline and 3 and 6 months later. RESULTS: Reduced CMPAase and increased AREase activities are significantly associated with AIS and mRS and NIHSS scores (baseline and 3 and 6 months later). The best predictor of AIS/disabilities was a decrease in the z-unit-based composite zCMPAase-zAREase score. Serum high density lipoprotein cholsterol (HDLc) was significantly correlated with CMPAase, but not AREase, activity and a lowered zCMPAase + zHDLc score was the second best predictor of AIS/disabilities. Regression analysis showed that 34.7% of the variance in baseline NIHSS was explained by zCMPAase-zAREase and zCMPAase + zHDLc composites, HDLc, and hypertension. Neural network analysis showed that stroke was differentiated from controls with an area under the ROC curve of 0.975 using both new composite scores, PON1 status, hypertension, dyslipidemia, previous stroke as body mass index. The PON1 Q192R genotype has many significant direct and mediated effects on AIS/disabilities, however, its overall effect was not significant. DISCUSSION: PON1 status and the CMPAase-HDLc complex play key roles in AIS and its disabilities at baseline and 3 and 6 months later.

Identifying the factors swaying physiological stress levels in wild animals can help depict how they cope with environmental and social stressors, shedding light on their feeding ecology, behavioral plasticity, and adaptability. Here, we used noninvasive methods to explore the link between glucocorticoid levels and behavior in an endangered neotropical primate facing habitat fragmentation pressure, the black lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus). We investigated monthly and day-to-day glucocorticoid variations independently to attempt to disentangle the complex nature of the adrenocortical activity. Between May 2019 to March 2020, we followed two groups of black lion tamarins in two different areas, a continuous forest and a small fragment, and gathered behavioral data (over 95 days in total; 8.6 ± 3.9 days/month) and fecal samples (Nsamples = 468; 4.93 ± 3.5 samples/day) simultaneously. Preliminary analyses enabled us to identify circadian variations linked to the biological rhythm, which were taken into account in subsequent models. Monthly analyses revealed that black lion tamarin fecal glucocorticoid metabolite levels vary according to changes in activity budget associated with the fruit consumption, movement, and resting time of the groups. At a day-to-day level, while intergroup encounters led to increases in fecal glucocorticoid metabolite concentrations, we found that changes in food intake or activity level did not trigger physiological stress responses. These findings suggest that diet and ranging patterns, driven by food availability and distribution, influence physiological stress at a seasonal scale, while acute stressors such as interspecific competition trigger short-term stress responses. Exploring fecal glucocorticoid metabolite variations over different timescales can help uncover the predictive and reactive facets of physiological stress in wild species. Moreover, having a comprehensive understanding of the physiological state of species is a valuable conservation tool for evaluating how they cope in changing environments.

Asthma prevalence and morbidity are disproportionately higher among minoritized communities in the United States. Racial and ethnic disparities in asthma result from complex interactions across biological, environmental, and social factors. Asthma is considered a complex heterogeneous disease consisting of different phenotypes, some of which may be more common in individuals impacted by the downstream effects of structural racism and lack of access to the social determinants of health. Structural racism across generations has created and reinforced inequitable systems through policies and practices which are embedded in the economic, educational, health care, and justice systems (Bailey et al., N Engl J Med 384(8):768-773, 2021; Bailey et al., Lancet 389:1453-1463, 2017; Williams et al., Annu Rev Public Health 40:105-125, 2019). This manifests in an inequitable distribution of resources and the social determinants of health affecting an individual's physical and social environment (Bailey et al., Lancet 389:1453-1463, 2017; Thakur et al., Am J Respir Crit Care Med 202:943-949, 2020; Martinez et al., J Allergy Clin Immunol 148(5):1112-1120, 2021). In this chapter, we outline how inequity in housing, zoning laws, urban planning, education, employment, healthcare access, and healthcare delivery is linked to higher asthma prevalence and morbidity. We also describe the role that chronic physiologic stress has on asthma by enhancing neuroimmune and immunologic responses to environmental exposures. Interventions aimed at addressing the physical or social environment of an individual or community have been shown to improve asthma outcomes in patients at higher risk of severe disease.

Fish scales have been reported to incorporate cortisol over long periods of time and thus provide a promising means of assessing long-term stress in many species of teleost fish. However, the quantification of other stress related hormones has only been accomplished in our previous study conducted in goldfish (Carassius auratus). DHEA is a precursory androgen with anti-stress effects used alongside cortisol to diagnose chronic stress via the cortisol:DHEA ratio in mammals. Included in DHEA's anti-stress mechanisms are changes in the metabolism of cortisol to its inactive metabolite cortisone suggesting the relationships between cortisol, DHEA and cortisone may be additionally informative in the assessment of long-term stress. Therefore, to further explore these concepts in a native fish species and generate more comprehensive comparisons between scale and serum hormone concentrations than was possible in our previous study we implemented a 14-day stress protocol in adult rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and quantified resulting scale and serum cortisol, cortisone and DHEA concentrations. As predicted, elevations in scale concentrations of all hormones were observed in stressed trout compared to controls but were not reflected in serum samples. Significant differences in the cortisol:DHEA and cortisone:cortisol ratios were also found between control and stressed group scales but not serum. These results suggest not only that scales provide a superior medium for the assessment of long-term stress but also that the addition of scale cortisone and DHEA may provide additional relevant information for such assessments.

Imazethapyr, a post-emergent herbicide used in worldwide soybean and corn crops, induces genetic and biochemical alterations in aquatic vertebrates. This study examined the relationship between biomarkers at different organization levels and imazethapyr real-life route exposure in Boana pulchella adults. Frogs were exposed to imazethapyr-based formulation Pivot® H (10.59%) at concentrations representing possible acute routes: field runoff (S1:10 mg.L-1), exposure after direct foliar application (S2:100 mg.L-1) and during direct foliar application (S3:1000 mg.L-1). Post-exposure, endpoints levels were evaluated: organism alterations, biochemical activities and cytogenetic assays. Forty-eight hours post-exposure, antioxidant enzymes decrease, micronuclei induction and DNA damage were observed in all scenarios, while cholinesterase activity increase and body condition reduction were observed in frog-exposed to S3. Ninety-six hours post-exposure, frogs showed glutathione-S-transferase inhibition in S1, micronuclei induction in S2 and S3, and DNA-damage increase in S3. Herbicides routes of exposures in real-life could indicate that authorized applications have a risk to amphibian populations.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopy revolutionizing digital and robotic technology for surgical practice. The ability of anesthetic agents and neuronal blockade to modify the response to surgical trauma has been widely studied in the last few years. OBJECTIVES: evaluate if Anterior Quadratus Lumborum Block contributes to attenuate surgical repercussions, having as primary parameters analgesia and secondary the pulmonary function and neuroendocrine response to trauma. METHODS: prospective, controlled, Double-blind study, in which 51 patients scheduled for eletive laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomly selected and distributed into 2 groups. Control group received general anesthesia, and the intervention group was submitted to general anesthesia plus Anterior Quadratus Lumborum Block. The parameters evaluated were: postoperative pain, respiratory muscle pressure, and inflammatory response to surgical stress with the plasma dosage of Interleukin 6, C-Reactive protein and cortisol. The following situations were excluded: refusal to participate in the study; body mass index greater than or equal to 40, peripheral neuropathies, coagulopathies or hypersensitivity to drugs used; infection at the puncture site; fever, purities; dementia or other states that would prevent the adequate understanding of the use of the numeric-verbal scale of pain; immunological diseases, diabetes, malignant neoplasia, use of opioids or anti-inflammatory drugs in the preoperative period; antidepressants and anticonvulsants, conversion open surgery, re-exploration and hospital stay. RESULTS: Slowed Interleukin 6 cytokine production and decrease in cortisol release, accompanied by significant attenuation of surgical repercussion on lung function and significant reduction in postoperative pain scores and consumption of pain medication. CONCLUSION: An important strategy for analgesia in abdominal laparoscopic surgery.
