RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with bridging fibrosis is a critical stage in the evolution of fatty liver disease. Second harmonic generation/two-photon excitation fluorescence (SHG/TPEF) microscopy with artificial intelligence (AI) provides sensitive and reproducible quantitation of liver fibrosis. This methodology was applied to gain an in-depth understanding of intra-stage fibrosis changes and septa analyses in a homogenous, well-characterised group with MASH F3 fibrosis. METHODS: Paired liver biopsies (baseline [BL] and end of treatment [EOT]) of 57 patients (placebo, n = 17 and tropifexor n = 40), with F3 fibrosis stage at BL according to the clinical research network (CRN) scoring, were included. Unstained sections were examined using SHG/TPEF microscopy with AI. Changes in liver fibrosis overall and in five areas of liver lobules were quantitatively assessed by qFibrosis. Progressive, regressive septa, and 12 septa parameters were quantitatively analysed. RESULTS: qFibrosis demonstrated fibrosis progression or regression in 14/17 (82%) patients receiving placebo, while the CRN scoring categorised 11/17 (65%) as 'no change'. Radar maps with qFibrosis readouts visualised quantitative fibrosis dynamics in different areas of liver lobules even in cases categorised as 'No Change'. Measurement of septa parameters objectively differentiated regressive and progressive septa (p < .001). Quantitative changes in individual septa parameters (BL to EOT) were observed both in the 'no change' and the 'regression' subgroups, as defined by the CRN scoring. CONCLUSION: SHG/TPEF microscopy with AI provides greater granularity and precision in assessing fibrosis dynamics in patients with bridging fibrosis, thus advancing knowledge development of fibrosis evolution in natural history and in clinical trials.

Microplastics (MPs) pose potential health risks to the intestinal tract and gut microbiota, a topic that has garnered significant attention. However, the absence of quantitative assessment methods for human gut MP exposure impedes related health risk assessments. Here, we performed long-term continuous exposure experiments on mice using MPs that mimic actual human exposure characteristics. The daily excretion of fecal MPs and the concentrations of phthalates (PAEs) and their metabolites (mPAEs) in serum and urine were detected. The cumulative excretion rate of fecal MPs remains stable at about 93%. A significant linear correlation was observed between MP exposure and concentration of mPAEs in urine for both low MP (LMP; 150 µg of MPs/d) (R2 = 0.90) and high MP (HMP; 360 µg of MPs/d) groups (R2 = 0.97). Moreover, a strong correlation was found between daily PAEs exposure and total MP-associated PAEs exposure in both LMP (R2 = 0.77) and HMP (R2 = 0.88) groups. Based on these findings, we established a noninvasive model and evaluated multiple MP exposure parameters in the human gut across 6 continents, 30 countries, and 133 individuals. This study offers novel insights for the quantitative assessment of in vivo MP exposure and provides technical support for assessing the health risks of MPs.

Neuropsychological evidence suggests that visuospatial memory is subserved by two separable processing systems, with dorsal underpinnings for global form and ventral underpinnings for the integration of part elements. Previous drawing studies have explored the effects of Gestalt organisation upon memory for hierarchical stimuli, and we here present an exploratory study of an apraxic dorsal stream patient's (MH) performance. We presented MH with a stimulus set (previously reported by Riddoch et al., Cognitive Neuropsychology, 20(7), 641-671, 2003) and devised a novel quantitative scoring system to obtain a finer grain of insight into performance. Stimuli possessed either good or poor Gestalt qualities and were reproduced in a copy condition and two visual memory conditions (with unlimited viewing before the model was removed, or with 3 s viewing). MH's copying performance was impaired in comparison to younger adult and age-matched older adult controls, with a variety of errors at the local level but relatively few at the global level. However, his performance in the visual memory conditions revealed impairments at the global level. For all participants, drawing errors were modulated by the Gestalt qualities of the stimuli, with accuracy at the global and local levels being lesser for poor global stimuli in all conditions. These data extend previous observations of this patient, and support theories that posit interaction between dorsal and ventral streams in the representation of hierarchical stimuli. We discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of visuospatial memory in neurological patients, and also evaluate the application of quantitative metrics to the interpretation of drawings.

Cervicocerebral artery dissection stands out as a significant contributor to ischemic stroke in young adults. Several studies have shown that arterial tortuosity is associated with dissection. We searched Pubmed and Embase to identify studies on the association between arterial tortuosity and cervicocerebral artery dissection, and to perform a review on the epidemiology of cervicocerebral artery tortuosity and dissection, pathophysiology, measurement of vessels tortuosity, strength of association between tortuosity and dissection, clinical manifestation and management strategies. The prevalence of tortuosity in dissected cervical arteries was reported to be around 22%-65% while it is only around 8%-22% in non-dissected arteries. In tortuous cervical arteries elastin and tunica media degradation, increased wall stiffness, changes in hemodynamics as well as arterial wall inflammation might be associated with dissection. Arterial tortuosity index and vertebrobasilar artery deviation is used to measure the level of vessel tortuosity. Studies have shown an independent association between these two measurements and cervicocerebral artery dissection. Different anatomical variants of tortuosity such as loops, coils and kinks may have a different level of association with cervicocerebral artery dissection. Symptomatic patients with extracranial cervical artery dissection are often treated with anticoagulant or antiplatelet agents, while patients with intracranial arterial dissection were often treated with antiplatelets only due to concerns of developing subarachnoid hemorrhage. Patients with recurrent ischemia, compromised cerebral blood flow or contraindications for antithrombotic agents are usually treated with open surgery or endovascular technique. Those with subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracranial artery dissection are often managed with surgical intervention due to high risk of re-hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVES: This study quantified the long-term occlusal wear in the natural posterior teeth and the associations per tooth type within the dentition. METHODS: The sample included 70 orthodontically treated subjects (52 females and 18 males; median age, 14.3 years), followed for a 12.7-year period. They were consecutively selected with no tooth wear-related criteria. Post-treatment (T1) and follow-up dental casts (T2) were scanned and superimposed through three-dimensional methods. Occlusal wear volume of posterior teeth and tooth wear patterns were investigated through non-parametric statistics and analysis of covariance. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between contralateral teeth. The average occlusal wear per posterior tooth was 2.3 mm3, with 65.2% of teeth showing values greater than 1 mm3. Males, mandibular teeth, and first molars exhibited slightly greater wear levels than females (median, 2.57 and 2.21 mm3, respectively; p = 0.005), maxillary teeth, and first or second premolars, respectively. In all first premolars and in the mandibular second premolars, the buccal cusps were primarily affected with no other distinct patterns. There were weak to moderate correlations between tooth types, apart from certain strong correlations detected in males. CONCLUSIONS: Posterior tooth wear was highly prevalent after a 13-year period starting at the onset of permanent dentition. The detected patterns are in accordance with the concept of canine guidance occlusion that is transforming into group synergy through function. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The widespread tooth wear occurrence and the high intra- and inter-individual variability underline the need for individual patient monitoring to identify high-risk patients at early stages.

OBJECTIVES: Although endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) training is important, quantitative assessments have not been established. This study aimed to explore a novel quantitative assessment system by analyzing an electrical surgical unit (ESU). METHODS: This was an ex vivo study. Step one: to identify the novel efficiency indicators, 20 endoscopists performed one ESD each, and we analyzed correlations between their resection speed and electrical status. Step two: to identify the novel precision indicators, three experts and three novices performed one ESD each, and we compared the stability of the electrical status. Step three: three novices in step two performed 19 additional ESDs, and we analyzed the learning curve using novel indicators. RESULTS: Step one: the percentage of total activation time (AT) of ESU in the procedure time (ß coefficient, 0.80; P < 0.01) and AT required for submucosal dissection (ß coefficient, -0.57; P < 0.01) were significantly correlated with the resection speed. Step two: coefficient of variation of the AT per one pulse (0.16 [range, 0.13-0.17] vs. 0.26 [range, 0.20-0.41], P = 0.049) and coefficient of variation of the peak electric power per pulse during mucosal incision (0.14 [range, 0.080-0.15] vs. 0.25 [range, 0.24-0.28], P = 0.049) were significantly lower in the experts than in the novices. Regarding the learning curve, the percentage of total AT of ESU in the procedure time and AT required for submucosal dissection had a trend of improvement. CONCLUSION: Novel indicators identified by analyzing ESU enable quantitative assessment for endoscopist's skill.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging of the skeletal muscles (muscle MRI for short) is increasingly being used in clinical routine for diagnosis and longitudinal assessment of muscle disorders. However, cross-centre standards for measurement protocol and radiological assessment are still lacking. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this expert recommendation is to present standards for the application and interpretation of muscle MRI in hereditary and inflammatory muscle disorders. METHODS: This work was developed in collaboration between neurologists, neuroradiologists, radiologists, neuropaediatricians, neuroscientists and MR physicists from different university hospitals in Germany. The recommendations are based on expert knowledge and a focused literature search. RESULTS: The indications for muscle MRI are explained, including the detection and monitoring of structural tissue changes and oedema in the muscle, as well as the identification of a suitable biopsy site. Recommendations for the examination procedure and selection of appropriate MRI sequences are given. Finally, steps for a structured radiological assessment are presented. CONCLUSIONS: The present work provides concrete recommendations for the indication, implementation and interpretation of muscle MRI in muscle disorders. Furthermore, it provides a possible basis for the standardisation of the measurement protocols at all clinical centres in Germany.

Long-term treatment of anemia involving frequent blood transfusions and intravenous iron administration increases the risks of hepatic iron overload and steatosis in the patients undergoing hemodialysis.Pathological accumulation of iron damages hepatocytes,not only elevating the risks of progressive hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis but also potentially accelerating the process of hepatic steatosis.Iron overload and steatosis may interact with each other,exacerbating liver damage and ultimately leading to further deterioration of hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis.MRI characterized by non-invasiveness and high repeatability,enables the simultaneous quantitative assessment of hepatic iron and fat content,providing crucial information for early diagnosis and intervention of liver diseases.In recent years,researchers have achieved significant advances in the application of MRI in the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases.MRI can accurately reflect the extent of hepatic iron overload and steatosis in patients and predict the risk of liver diseases.This article reviews the latest advances,challenges,and perspectives in the application of MRI in assessing hepatic iron overload and steatosis in the patients undergoing hemodialysis,aiming to offer valuable references for clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: We retrospectively aimed to assess the prognostic significance of somatostatin receptor (SSTR) standardized uptake value (SUVmaxsstr), SSTR representative tumor volume (RTVsstr) and total lesion SSTR expression (TLsstr) obtained by [68Ga]Ga-edotreotide PET/CT ([68Ga]Ga-SSTR PET/CT) in patients with primary gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NET) before surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed patients who underwent [68Ga]Ga-SSTR PET/CT 3-6 weeks before surgery from February 2020 to April 2022. The mean SUVmaxsstr value, the RTVsstr (cm3; 42% threshold) and the TLsstr (g) were registered. Thereafter the patients were followed up 10.3 months (range 3-27). The PET/CT results were compared to the event free survival (EFS). RESULTS: Forty-two patients (61 ± 13 years) have been enrolled. At multivariate analysis only RTVsstr values were predictive. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis for RTVsstr showed a significant better EFS in patients presenting lower values as compared to those having greater (P = .003, log-rank test). SUVmaxsstr was not suitable for predicting EFS, TLsstr mildly. CONCLUSION: RTVsstr represents a valuable volumetric parameter able to predict the outcome in GEP-NET patients who underwent surgery. The magnitude of the SSTR representative tumor burden holds a predominant value for determining the response to therapy in GEP-NET patients before surgery, rather than the maximal SSTR representation at single voxel.

PURPOSE: Qualitative and quantitative assessment of interventional performance is a vital component in the evaluation of endovascular surgery skill training. We established a custom simulator with qualitative and quantitative metrics for endovascular performance training. METHODS: The simulator included an in vitro silicone phantom, mock circulation loop, visual module, force-sensing module, and custom software for image and force data postprocessing. Two tasks to deliver the guidewire to the target location of the carotid artery were conducted by the expert (n=4), novice (n=6), and test (n=4) groups. Seven features with significant differences extracted from the expert and novice groups were applied for qualitative assessment using the support vector machine (SVM) and quantitative assessment using the Mahalanobis distance (MD). RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in kinematic and force data between experts and novices during the intervention procedure. The median value of finished time for task 1 was 26.88 seconds for experts and 63.36 seconds for novices. The maximum speed for experts and novices was 32.79 and 7.43 cm/s, respectively. Moreover, the classified results depicted that the accuracy of qualitative assessment for task 1 and task 2 was 96.67% and 90%, respectively. As for the quantitative data, the residents had higher scores than individuals majored in biomedical engineering at 2 tasks (70.06±5.30 vs 41.81±6.58 for task 1, p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The proposed endovascular intervention skill training simulator provides qualitative and quantitative metrics on intervention performance skills and may be a useful tool in future interventional surgical training. CLINICAL IMPACT: This simulator comprised an in-vitro silicone phantom, mock circulation loop, visual module, force-sensing module, and custom software for image and force data post-processing. Seven interventional performance features were used for qualitative assessment using the support vector machine and quantitative assessment using the Mahalanobis Distance. From the observations, we conclude that this endovascular intervention skill training simulator provides qualitative and quantitative metrics on intervention performance and may be a useful tool in future surgical training.

Microplastics (MPs) are abundant in air, but evidence of their deposition in the respiratory tract is limited. We conducted a prospective case series to investigate the deposition of microplastics in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and determine the internal dose of MPs via inhalation. Eighteen never-smokers aged 32-74 years who underwent fiberoptic bronchoscopy with BALF were recruited from Zhuhai, China. Control samples were obtained by performing the same procedure using isotonic saline instead of BALF. Laser direct infrared spectroscopy combined with scanning electron microscopy detected the presence and characteristics of MPs and quantitatively analyzed the microplastic in BALF and control samples. Concentrations of total and specific MPs in BALF and control samples were compared using the Wilcox test. Thirteen types of MPs were observed in 18 BALF samples. Polyethylene (PE, 86.1%) was the most abundant in BALF, followed by poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET, 7.5%) and polypropylene (PP, 1.9%). Compared with the control samples, BALF had significantly higher concentrations of PE (median [IQR] of BALF: 0.38 [8.05] N/g), PET (0.26 [0.54] N/g), polyurethane (0.16 [0.24] N/g), PP (0.16 [0.11] N/g), and total MPs (0.91 [6.58] N/g). The presence of MPs in BALF provides novel evidence that MPs penetrate deep into the respiratory tract.

AIM: This clinical study was undertaken to assess the effect of treatment with regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) on 20 teeth with pulp necrosis, apical periodontitis, and external root resorption (ERR). METHODOLOGY: Teeth were treated with REPS utilizing the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) protocol. Quantitative assessment of changes in radiographic root area (RRA) were statistically analysed to assess changes in root dimensions after an average follow-up period of 3 years. RESULTS: All 20 teeth survived, 14 teeth (70%) were classified successful, and only 1 tooth (5%) failed throughout the study period. Based on the radiographic examination, all 20 teeth showed complete repair of the periapical lesions and arrested ERR. However, 5 teeth (25%) subsequently developed replacement resorption. The RRA between baseline and 3-year follow-up showed a significant difference for the total 20 teeth (p = .009). An analysis according to the trauma type and the extra-oral time showed the RRA increase was significantly different in the non-avulsion group (p = .015) and for the avulsion group with an extra-oral time less than 60 min (p = .029). The RRA increase was not statistically significant in the avulsion group of extra-oral time more than 60 min (p = .405). Nine teeth (45%) and 10 teeth (50%) responded to cold and electric pulp testing, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, the favourable outcomes of REPs were further confirmed for traumatized permanent necrotic teeth with ERR in terms of periapical lesion healed and a significant increase in RRA. The study contributes further evidence of the role of REPs in arresting ERR.

With the increasing complexity of the electromagnetic environment, existing electronic systems and various equipment are greatly threatened. The study of the assessment of the effects of the electromagnetic environment has attracted more and more attention in the academic field and industry. In this review, the definition of the electromagnetic environmental effects assessment could be classified into two categories: objective and subjective equipment electromagnetic environmental effect assessments. Studies on both are comprehensively reviewed. The electromagnetic environmental effect assessment models are described and analyzed. The effects evaluation models mainly calculate the electromagnetic environmental effect index by various weighting, probability, and normalized interference level methods. However, each proposed model has certain limitations, so it cannot deal with all the electromagnetic interference effects. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation model for complex electromagnetic environmental effects has not yet been established. Recent studies have shown that neural networks can be used to improve the adaptability of evaluation models in electromagnetic environments. The evaluation result of the normalized interference level method is more consistent with the actual work efficiency. The combination of the two can unify the objective and subjective assessments, which is of great significance to the improvement of the consistency and accuracy of the results of the effects evaluation of the electromagnetic environment. Accordingly, challenges for future research are revealed, which plays a vital role in the development of electromagnetic environmental effects research and provides a reference for researchers.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), as a stubborn contamination, should be monitored and kept in an acceptable level during the pharmaceutical production process. Recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (r-HBsAg) is one of the recombinant biological products, which is probable to suffer from extrinsic endotoxin due to its long and complex production process. This research aims to assess the potential interaction between LPS and r-HBsAg by recruiting immunoaffinity chromatography (IAC) as a novel tool to quantify the interaction. Molecular modeling was performed on the HBsAg molecule to theoretically predict its potential binding and interaction sites. Then dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis was implemented on HBsAg, LPS, and mixtures of them to reveal the interaction. The virus-like particle (VLP) structure of HBsAg and the ribbon-like structure of LPS were visualized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Finally, the interaction was quantified by applying various LPS/HBsAg ratios ranging from 1.67 to 120 EU/dose in the IAC. Consequently, the LPS/HBsAg ratios in the eluate were measured from 1.67 to a maximum of 92.5 EU/dose. The results indicated that 77 to 100% of total LPS interacted with HBsAg by an inverse relationship to the incubated LPS concentration. The findings implied that the introduced procedure is remarkably practical in the quantification of LPS interaction with a target recombinant protein.

[Purpose] The weight-bearing ratio in sitting is a simple quantitative assessment using a body weight scale. Bilateral total weight bearing ratio in sitting is related to the ability to stand up, transfer, and walk; however, it has not been examined in the performance test on just one side. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between weight bearing ratio in sitting and performance tests on one side. [Participants and Methods] Thirty-two healthy adults were recruited (27.47 ± 4.06 years). Weight-bearing ratio in sitting, knee extensor muscle strength, lateral reach test, and one-leg stand-up test were measured. Correlation analysis between the measurement results was performed on the pivot and non-pivot sides and the total. [Results] Correlation analysis of the weight-bearing ratio in sitting showed a significant positive correlation (pivot/non-pivot/total) with knee extensor muscle strength (r=0.54/0.44/0.50), lateral reach test (r=0.42/0.44/0.48), and one-leg stand up test (r=0.44/0.52/0.51). [Conclusion] Weight-bearing ratio in sitting, both pivot, non-pivot, and total, reflected results of the performance tests. Weight bearing ratio in sitting would be a highly useful quantitative assessment for a wide range of individuals, from those with unstable standing to those with relatively high function.

Rehabilitation assessment is the basis and important part of rehabilitation diagnosis and treatment. At present, clinical evaluation is usually carried out by observation method and scale method. At the same time, researchers monitor patients' physical condition data through sensor system and other equipment as a supplement. The purpose of this study is to review the application and development of objective rehabilitation assessment technology in clinical practice, and to discuss its limitations and strategies to provide reference for related research.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate articular cartilage degeneration using quantitative three-dimensional ultrashort-echo-time cones adiabatic-T1ρ (3D UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ) imaging. METHODS: Sixty-six human subjects were recruited for this study. Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade and Whole-Organ Magnetic-Resonance-Imaging Score (WORMS) were evaluated by two musculoskeletal radiologists. The human subjects were categorized into three groups, namely normal controls (KL0), doubtful-minimal osteoarthritis (OA) (KL1-2), and moderate-severe OA (KL3-4). WORMS were regrouped to encompass the extent of lesions and the depth of lesions. The UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values were obtained using 3D UTE-Cones data acquisitions preceded by seven paired adiabatic full passage pulses that corresponded to seven spin-locking times (TSLs) of 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 ms. The performance of the UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ technique in evaluating the degeneration of knee cartilage was assessed via the ANOVA comparisons with subregional analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficient as well as the receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ showed significant positive correlations with KL grade (r = 0.15, p < 0.05) and WORMS (r = 0.57, p < 0.05). Higher UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values were observed in both larger and deeper lesions in the cartilage. The differences in UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values among different extent and depth groups of cartilage lesions were all statistically significant (p < 0.05). Subregional analyses showed that the correlations between UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ and WORMS varied with the location of cartilage. The AUC value of UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ for mild cartilage degeneration (WORMS=1) was 0.8. The diagnostic threshold value of UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ for mild cartilage degeneration was 39.4 ms with 80.8% sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ sequence can be useful in quantitative evaluation of articular cartilage degeneration. KEY POINTS: • The 3D UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ sequence can distinguish mild cartilage degeneration from normal cartilage with a diagnostic threshold value of 39.4 ms for mild cartilage degeneration with 80.8% sensitivity. • Higher UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values were observed in both larger and deeper lesions in the articular cartilage. • UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ is a promising biomarker for quantitative evaluation of early cartilage degeneration.

PURPOSE: To develop a deep learning-based framework to improve the image quality of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and evaluate its image enhancement effect with the traditional image averaging method from a clinical perspective. METHODS: 359 normal eyes and 456 eyes with various retinal conditions were included. A deep learning framework with high-resolution representation was developed to achieve image quality enhancement for OCT images. The quantitative comparisons, including expert subjective scores from ophthalmologists and three objective metrics of image quality (structural similarity index measure (SSIM), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR)), were performed between deep learning method and traditional image averaging. RESULTS: With the increase of frame count from 1 to 20, our deep learning method always obtained higher SSIM and PSNR values than the image averaging method while importing the same number of frames. When we selected 5 frames as inputs, the local objective assessment with CNR illustrated that the deep learning method had more obvious tissue contrast enhancement than averaging method. The subjective scores of image quality were all highest in our deep learning method, both for normal retinal structure and various retinal lesions. All the objective and subjective indicators had significant statistical differences (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Compared to traditional image averaging methods, our proposed deep learning enhancement framework can achieve a reasonable trade-off between image quality and scanning times, reducing the number of repeated scans.

BACKGROUND: About 90% of women worldwide use nail care products, including manicure ones. A manicure procedure results in nail damage, therefore it is necessary to search for new, objective methods of assessing the impact of the procedures and products applied within the nail plate. In this study, an attempt was made to quantify the impact of manicure procedures on the nail plate condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty thumb nail plates were examined. Before the manicure procedures, alginate casts were prepared for each of the subjects. The analysis of the three-dimensional (3D) nail surface structure included the assessment of the nail sections and the assessment of differences in the nail structure after superposition of 3D images of the nail plates before and after the manicure procedures. RESULTS: The obtained results show that the nail plate structure changed to a similar extent in each measured section after the manicure procedure. A change in the height of the nails is not a desirable phenomenon as it suggests damage to the nail caused by the substances included in the preparations applied to the nails, acetone, or filing the nail plate. This proves the great influence of the technique of removing artificial nails on the structure of the natural plate. CONCLUSION: The use of a 3D scanner allows for precise, biometric, quantitative, and repeatable measurements of changes in the nail structure after a manicure procedure. The use of the hybrid and gel manicure procedure causes significant damage to the nail plate, especially in its distal portion.

Petroleum-based plastics (PBP) with different properties have been developed to suit various needs of modern lives. Nevertheless, these well-developed properties also present the double-edged sword effect that significantly threatens the sustainability of the environment. This work focuses on the impact of microbial cultivating conditions (the elementary compositions and temperature) to provide insightful information for the process optimization of microbial degradation. The major elementary compositions in cultivation media and temperature from the literature were radically reviewed and assessed using the constructed supervised machine learning algorithm. Fifty-two literatures were collected as a training dataset to investigate the impact of major chemical elements and cultivation temperature upon PBP biodegradation. Among six singular parameters (NH4+, K+, PO43-, Mg2+, Ca2+, and temperature) and thirty corresponding binary parameters, four singular (NH4+, K+, PO43-, and Mg2+) and six binary parameters (NH4+/K+, NH4+/PO43-, NH4+/Ca2+, K+/PO43-, PO43-/Mg2+, Mg2+/Temp) were identified as statistically significant towards microbial degradation through analysis of variance (ANOVA). The binary effect (PO43-/Mg2+) is found to be the most statistically significant towards the microbial degradation of PBP. The concentration range, which locates at 0.1-0.6 g/L for Mg2+ and 0-2.8 g/L for PO43-, was identified to contribute to the maximum PBP biodegradation. Among all the investigated elements, Mg2+ is the only element that is statistically and significantly associated with the variations of cultivation temperature. The optimal preparation conditions within ± 20% uncertainties based upon the range of collected literature reports are recommended. Five representative cultivation elementary compositions (NH4+, K+, PO43-, Mg2+, and Ca2+) and temperature were reviewed from fifty two different literature reports to investigate their impacts on the microbial degradation of PBP using supervised machine learning algorithm. The optimal cultivation conditions based upon collected literature reports to achieve biodegradation over 80% were identified.
