BACKGROUND: Hematoma expansion is a critical factor associated with increased mortality and adverse outcomes in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Identifying and preventing hematoma expansion early on is crucial for effective therapeutic intervention. This study aimed to investigate the potential association between the Red cell distribution width to lymphocyte ratio (RDWLR) and hematoma expansion in ICH patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data from 303 ICH patients treated at our department between May 2018 and May 2023. Demographic, clinical, radiological, and laboratory data, including RDWLR upon admission, were assessed. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to determine independent associations between various variables and hematoma expansion. RESULTS: The study included 303 ICH patients, comprising 167 (55.1%) males and 136 (44.9%) females, with a mean age of 65.25 ± 7.32 years at admission. Hematoma expansion occurred in 73 (24.1%) cases. Multivariate analysis revealed correlations between hematoma volume at baseline (OR, 2.73; 95% CI: 1.45 -4,78; P < 0.001), admission systolic blood pressure (OR, 2.98 ; 95% CI: 1.54-4.98; P < 0.001), Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) (OR, 1.58; 95% CI: 1.25-2.46; P = 0.017), and RDWLR (OR, 1.58; 95% CI: 1.13-2.85; P = 0.022) and hematoma expansion in these patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that RDWLR could serve as a new inflammatory biomarker for hematoma expansion in ICH patients. This cost-effective and readily available biomarker has the potential for early prediction of hematoma expansion in these patients.

Background and Objectives: mortality and morbidity due to cardiovascular causes are frequently experienced in amputees. Research on the effects of chronic exercise on biomarkers and cardiac damage indicators in these individuals is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a core training program on brain natriuretic-related peptide, as well as hematological and biochemical parameters in amputee soccer players. Materials and Methods: The participants were randomly allocated to the following two groups: a core exercise group (CEG) and a control group (CG). While the CG continued routine soccer training, the CEG group was included in a core exercise program different from this group. During the study, routine hemogram parameters of the participants, various biochemical markers, and the concentration of brain natriuretic-related peptide (NT-pro-BNP) were analyzed. Results: after the training period, notable improvements in various hematological parameters were observed in both groups. In the CEG, there were significant enhancements in red blood cell count (RBC), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) values. Similarly, the CG also showed substantial improvements in RBC, HCT, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), MCHC, MCH, red cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLCR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW). Moreover, in the CEG, serum triglycerides (TG) and maximal oxygen uptake (MaxVO2) exhibited significant increases. Conversely, TG levels decreased in the CG, while high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and MaxVO2 levels demonstrated substantial elevations. Notably, the N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels did not undergo significant changes in either the CEG or the CG following the core exercise program (p > 0.05). However, in the CEG, a meaningful positive correlation was observed between NT-pro-BNP and creatine kinase (CK) levels before and after the core exercise program. Conclusions: the findings emphasized the potential benefits of core training in enhancing specific physiological aspects, such as erythrocyte-related parameters and lipid metabolism, as well as aerobic capacity. Furthermore, the observed correlation between NT-pro-BNP and CK levels in the CEG provides intriguing insights into the unique physiological adaptations of amputee athletes.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a common consequence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) are principally used for differential diagnosis of anemia. Limited evidence is available for its prognostic value for mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. We aimed to definite the relationship between RDW and MCV and mortality in HD patients. METHOD: This cohort study examined all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality with 181 maintenance HD patients from February 2015. Patients were divided into four groups according to the median of RDW and MCV. Pearson analysis was conducted to determine the related factors of RDW and MCV. The independent association of RDW and MCV with mortality was examined with Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: This study included 181 HD patients for a median follow-up of 71 months. We found RDW was positively related to neutrophil count, C-reaction protein, and ferritin, while negatively related to hemoglobin, albumin, and creatinine. Only neutrophil count and ferritin were significantly related to MCV in this study. In the multivariate Cox regression analysis, the high RDW group was associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality (odds ratio, 3.787; 95% confidence interval, 1.037 to 13.834; p = 0.044). The relationship between RDW and MCV and CV mortality was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: RDW could emerge as an additive risk factor for all-cause mortality in maintenance HD patients, independent of other factors. An absolute value of MCV to predict mortality and the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms should be confirmed in the future.

BACKGROUND: Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) has been associated with degenerative conditions in aging. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the associations of RDW and anemia with lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 5093 rural residents (age ≥ 60 years, 57.3% women) who participated in the MIND-China Study in Shandong. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. RDW was categorized according to quartiles and the lower-extremity physical function was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), RESULTS: Multiple linear regression analyses suggested that the fourth quartile of RDW (vs. first quartile) was associated with lower SPPB summary score (ß-coefficient - 0.38; 95% CI - 0.58 to - 0.18) and lower scores in balance test (- 0.09; - 0.17 to - 0.01), chair stand test (- 0.17; - 0.27 to - 0.07), and walking speed test (- 0.12; - 0.19 to - 0.05). Anemia was associated with a multiple-adjusted ß-coefficient of - 0.34 (- 0.52 to - 0.16) for SPPB summary score. Stratified analysis by anemia showed that there was a linear association between RDW and SPPB in individuals without anemia but a J-shaped association in individuals with anemia. DISCUSSION: This large-scale population-based study revealed the associations of high RDW and anemia with poor lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults. These findings suggest that an elevated RDW might be a biochemical marker for poor lower-extremity physical function among older adults. CONCLUSIONS: Anemia and an elevated RDW are associated with poor performance in lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults.

BACKGROUND: Platelet distribution width (PDW) and red cell distribution width (RDW) are readily obtainable data, and are reportedly useful as prognostic indicators in some cancers. However, their prognostic significance is unclear in gastric cancer (GC). METHODS: We enrolled 445 patients with histopathological diagnoses of gastric adenocarcinoma who had undergone curative surgeries. RESULTS: According to the optimal cut-off value of PDW and RDW by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, we divided patients into PDWHigh (≥ 16.75%), PDWLow (< 16.75%), RDWHigh (≥ 14.25%), and RDWLow (< 14.25%) subgroups. Overall survival (OS) was significantly worse in patients with PDWHigh than in those with PDWLow (P = 0.0015), as was disease specific survival (P = 0.043). OS was also significantly worse in patients with RDWHigh than in those with RDWLow (P <  0.0001), as was disease specific survival (P = 0.0002). Multivariate analysis for OS revealed that both PDW and RDW were independent prognostic indicators. Patients were then given PDW-RDW score by adding points for their different subgroups (1 point each for PDWHigh and RDWHigh; 0 points for PDWLow and RDWLow). OS significantly differed by PDW-RDW score (P <  0.0001), as did disease specific survival (P = 0.0005). In multivariate analysis for OS, PDW-RDW score was found to be an independent prognostic indicator. CONCLUSIONS: The prognosis of GC patients can be precisely predictable by using both PDW and RDW.

Anemia manifested as reduced red blood cell (RBC) amounts or hemoglobin levels has been associated with lower cardiorespiratory fitness. However, the relationship of smaller RBC with physical fitness was unknown. We included 2933 non-anemic military males (hemoglobin levels: 11.1-15.9 g/dL and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) <100 fL) in Taiwan during 2014. Aerobic fitness was assessed by time for a 3000-meter run, and anaerobic fitness was evaluated by numbers of sit-ups and push-ups, each performed within 2 minutes. Multiple linear and logistic regression models adjusting for age, service specialty, lipid profiles, and hemoglobin levels were used to determine the associations. Microcytosis and normocytosis were defined as MCV ≤ 70 fL (n = 190) and MCV > 70 fL (n = 2743), respectively. The linear regression shows that as compared with microcytosis, normocytosis was associated with more numbers of sit-ups performed within 2 minutes (ß = 1.51, P-value = 0.02). The logistic regression also reveals that those males with microcytosis had higher probability as the worst 10% performers in the 2-minute push-up test (odds ratio: 1.91, 95% confidence intervals: 1.18-3.12). By contrast, there was no association of microcytosis with 3000-meter running time. Our study suggests that non-anemic microcytosis was associated with lower anaerobic fitness but not with aerobic fitness. Whether the causative factors for microcytosis such as iron deficiency status and thalassemia trait unavailable in the study might account for the relationship needs further investigations.

RESUMEN

We performed a detailed analysis of changes in the profiles of osmotic deformability using the method of gradient ektacytometry. Changes in all determinants that form the deformation properties of red blood cells in Wistar rats in the juvenile period and before puberty were determined. The dynamics of the formation of the rheological properties of the blood after birth is characterized by a wave-like change in the studied determinants. The changes are explained by adaptive reactions to extrauterine life as a result of hematopoiesis activation and the transition of the red bone marrow to a new level of functioning with the predominant replacement of physiological reticulocytosis in newborns with mature erythrocytes. The most critical period is from 10 days to 1 month after birth. Starting from the second month, the deformation parameters of erythrocytes are stabilized.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a major burden with no clinically applicable biomarkers. AIM: To investigate the association of Red cell Distribution Width (RDW) values on admission with previous hospitalizations, need of non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) and long term oxygen therapy (LTOT) in patients with COPD. METHODS: Patients with AECOPD admitted to our department during 2018 were included in the study. RESULTS: One hundred sixty patients were enrolled (M/F 95/65, median age 71.00 years, mean FEV1± SD = 46.6 ± 28.9). Median RDW was significantly higher for patients in need of NIMV (14.8, 95% CI: 14.2 to 15.6) than patients not in need of NIMV (13.5, 95% CI: 13.2 to 13.8) (p < 0.001). Median RDW was significantly higher for patients in need of LTOT (14.2, 95% CI: 13.7 to 14.6) compared to patients not receiving LTOT (13.2, 95% CI: 12.5 to 13.6) (p = 0.001). Patients with hospitalization during the last 12 months had increased RDW values compared to patients with no hospitalizations [median RDW 14.3, (95% CI: 13.5 to 14.9) versus median RDW 13.5, (95% CI: 13.1 to 13.9)](p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Patients with COPD in need of LTOT, NIMV or patients with previous hospitalizations presented with increased RDW values. Increased RDW values could serve as a negative prognostic marker in patients with COPD.

BACKGROUND: Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) has been associated with worse outcomes in several medical patient populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of increased preoperative RDW and short- and long-term mortality after noncardiac surgery. METHODS: This investigation was a retrospective cohort study including all patients undergoing noncardiac surgery between 2005 and 2015 at Landspitali-the National University Hospital in Iceland. Patients were separated into five predefined groups based on preoperative RDW (≤13.3%, 13.4-14.0%, 14.1-14.7%, 14.8-15.8%, and >15.8%). The primary outcome was all-cause long-term mortality and secondary outcomes included 30-day mortality, length of stay, and readmissions within 30 days, compared with propensity score matched (PSM) cohort from patients with RDW ≤13.3%. RESULTS: There was a higher hazard of long-term mortality for patients with RDW between 14.8% and 15.8% (hazard ratio=1.33; 95% confidence interval, 1.15-1.59; P<0.001) and above 15.8% (hazard ratio=1.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.41-1.95; P<0.001), compared with matched controls with RDW ≤13.3%. This association held in multiple patient subgroups. For secondary outcomes, there was no difference in 30-day mortality, length of stay, or risk of readmission within 30 days. CONCLUSIONS: Increased preoperative RDW is associated with increased long-term mortality after noncardiac surgery. RDW could be a composite biomarker of pre-existing chronic inflammation and poor nutritional status. Future studies should clarify if this is a modifiable risk factor for improved surgical outcomes.

Changes of mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet count (PC) could be a marker or a predictor of acute stroke (AS). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the published literature on the reporting of MPV and PC in AS. Studies were included in accordance with Patient Population or Problem, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes, and Setting framework. The PRISMA strategy was used to report findings. Risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. We included 34 eligible articles retrieved from the literature. PC was significantly lower in AS patients [standardized mean difference (SMD) = - 0.30, (95% CI: - 0.49 to - 0.11), N = 2492, P = .002] compared with controls (N = 3615). The MPV was significantly higher [SMD = 0.52 (95% CI: 0.28-0.76), N = 2739, P < .001] compared with controls (N = 3810). Subgroup analyses showed significantly lower PC in both ischemic stroke (Difference SMD = -0.18, 95% CI: -0.35-0.01) and hemorrhagic stroke (-0.94, -1.62 to -0.25), but only samples by citrate anticoagulant showed significantly lower result for patients compared to controls (-0.36, -0.68 to -0.04). Ischemic stroke patients had higher MPV (0.57, 0.31-0.83), and samples by Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulant showed significantly higher result for patients compared to controls (0.86, 0.55-1.17). PC and MPV appeared to be significantly different between patients with AS and control populations. MPV was significantly higher in ischemic stroke and PC was significantly lower in both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. These characteristics might be related to AS and associated with it. It is advisable to pay attention to elapsed time between phlebotomy and hematology analysis, anticoagulant and hemocytometer types in AS. BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that the levels of red cell distribution width (RDW) would correlate with lupus nephritis (LN) disease activity, therapeutic response after induction therapy, and its rise would be associated with future renal relapse in patients who had achieved clinical remission. METHODS: The associations of RDW and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI), renal response, and renal relapse after induction therapy were examined in 172 biopsy-proven LN patients at the Division of Nephrology, Huashan Hospital Fudan University between 2007 and 2017. RESULTS: The median RDW of LN patients was significantly higher than that of healthy individuals (p < 0.001). Baseline RDW demonstrated positive correlation with baseline SLEDAI (r = 0.239, p = 0.004). Overall RDW after induction treatment was significantly decreased (p = 0.005), especially in the complete remission (CR) group (p = 0.02), and the partial remission (PR) group had a decreasing trend (p = 0.09), while the change of RDW in the no response (NR) group was not statistically significant (p = 0.70). Among the 153 patients who achieved remission after induction therapies, 37 (24.2%) patients developed 42 episodes of subsequent renal flare during a median follow-up of 36.0 (IQR, 20 - 66) months. The median time from remission to renal flare was 18.0 (IQR, 7.0 - 45.0) months. The overall renal flare rate was 0.065 relapse per patient-year. During follow up, 54 RDW rises (defined as more than 0.5% increase in RDW) were identified. There were 33 episodes (61.1%) of renal flares in patients with RDW rises, while there were only 9 renal flares (8.65%) in 104 patients without RDW rise (p < 0.001). Survival analysis showed that RDW rise was associated with a significantly higher risk of future renal relapse (adjusted HR, 14.03; 95% CI, 5.29 to 37.20; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In addition to correlating with disease activity and therapeutic response to induction therapy in patients with LN, RDW rise is a significant predictor of future renal relapse in patients who achieve remission.

BACKGROUND: A study has been performed in overweight and obese subjects to assess the effects of adiposity and inflammation indicators on dysmetabolic biomarkers via red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), taking into account pro-antioxidant balance. METHODS: Data from 166 overweight subjects were analyzed by a path analysis model using structural equation modelling (SEM) to evaluate the direct and indirect pathway effects of adiposity, measured by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), and inflammation status, measured by pro-antioxidant balance [reactive oxygen species (ROS)], lag-time and slope and C-reactive protein (CRP) values on dysmetabolic biomarkers, via RDW and MCV. RESULTS: BMI was strongly linked to CRP and ROS levels. Moreover, there was a significant negative decrease of MCV (1.546 femtoliters) linked to BMI indirectly via high CRP levels. Furthermore, WC affected RDW, indicating a possible mediatory role for RDW in relation to the relationship between WC and homeostatic model assessment (HOMA), insulin and high density lipoprotein (HDL), respectively. This was evident by the elevated HOMA and insulin levels and the decreased levels of HDL. Finally, ROS-related markers did not affect directly RDW and MCV. CONCLUSION: The reported outcomes suggest that RDW might play a mediatory role in the relationship between WC and the dysmetabolic outcomes in overweight and obese individuals. CRP seems to modulate the linkage between BMI and MCV. This study provides the backbone structure for future scenarios and lays the foundation for further research on the role of RDW and MCV as suitable biomarkers for the assessment of cardiovascular disease (HDL-cholesterol), inflammatory bowels and insulin resistance.

BACKGROUND: Red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV) are considered to be associated with tumors. We investigated the diagnostic value of RDW, MPV, and cancer antigen 125 (CA125), alone or in combination, in the diagnosis of endometrial cancer and endometrial hyperplasia. METHODS: This study included 144 patients with endometrial cancer (stage I: 32; II: 42; III: 48; and IV: 22), 104 patients with endometrial hyperplasia, and 80 healthy control subjects. The whole blood cell parameters were analyzed by a Mindray Blood Cell Analyzer (CAL8000), whereas CA125 was analyzed using an Architect i2000 Analyzer (Abbott). RESULTS: Significant differences in RDW, MPV, and CA125 level were observed in the endometrial cancer, endometrial hyperplasia, and control groups (P < .05). Red cell distribution width was positively correlated (r = .735) whereas MPV was negatively correlated with (r = -.736) endometrial cancer staging. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the combined diagnosis of endometrial cancer based on RDW, MPV, and CA125 was 0.924 (95% CI: 0.881-0.955). The sensitivity and specificity of the combined diagnosis were larger than those of the independent detections involving RDW, MPV, and CA125. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of RDW, MPV, and CA125 can improve the differential diagnosis of endometrial cancer and endometrial hyperplasia.

INTRODUCTION: Hemolysis is the main cause of unqualified clinical samples. In this study, we established a method for detecting and evaluating hemolysis in whole blood test. We used a mathematical formula for correcting the influence of hemolysis on complete blood cell count (CBC) so as to avoid re-venipuncture and obtain more accurate parameters of red blood cell detection, reduce the burden of patients, and improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Hemolytic samples were selected and then corrected using the new formula. Plasma free hemoglobin (fHB) was used as the criterion to determine the degree of hemolysis; the uncertainty of measurement is acceptable as the limit value of deviation between the measured value and the revised value. Hemolysis simulation analysis in vitro and continuous monitoring of clinical patients were used to verify the correction effect. RESULTS: A total of 83 clinical samples with hemolysis were collected and analyzed; fHB 1.4 g/L was selected as the unacceptable value for clinical hemolysis detection. In hemolytic samples, the red blood cell parameters corrected by formula are significantly different from those uncorrected and had a good consistency with those before hemolysis. CONCLUSION: The results show that the hemolysis phenomenon of CBC has a significant impact on routine blood testing. By using the new formula, the influence of hemolysis on erythrocyte and related parameters can be quickly and easily corrected, thus avoiding venipuncture again for re-examination, reducing diagnostic errors, and saving medical resources.

BACKGROUND: The development and progression of hepatitis B virus-related decompensated cirrhosis (DeCi) is associated with inflammatory responses. The monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and red cell distribution width (RDW) are well-known inflammation markers. We aimed to assess the utility of these parameters for predicating the prognosis of patients with HBV-DeCi. METHODS: We retrospectively recruited 174 patients diagnosed with HBV-DeCi. Univariate and multivariate regression models were used to determine risk factors for mortality. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were calculated to estimate and compare the predictive values of the three parameters. Hepatic function was evaluated using the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score. RESULTS: The NLR, RDW, and MLR were found to be significantly higher in patients who did not survive compared with surviving patients. Moreover, these variables were all able to predict early poor outcomes in patients with HBV-DeCi, with NLR exhibiting the highest accuracy. Furthermore, a combination of the NLR and MELD score was a more accurate prognostic marker for predicting mortality than either marker alone in such patients. CONCLUSIONS: Hematological parameters can provide prognostic information for patients with HBV-DeCi. Routine assessment of these parameters at admission may provide valuable data to complement other conventional measures for assessing disease condition in patients with HBV-DeCi.

BACKGROUND: Major surgery comes with a high risk for postoperative inflammatory complications. Preoperative risk scores predict mortality risk but fail to identify patients at risk for complications following cardiovascular surgery. We therefore assessed the value of preoperative red cell distribution width (RDW) as a predictor for pneumonia and sepsis after cardiovascular surgery and studied the relation of RDW with hematopoietic tissue activity. METHODS: RDW is an easily accessible, yet seldomly used parameter from routine haematology measurements. RDW was extracted from the Utrecht Patient Orientated Database (UPOD) for preoperative measurements in patients undergoing open abdominal aortic anuerysm repair (AAA)(N = 136) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)(N = 2193). The cohorts were stratified in tertiles to assess effects over the different groups. Generalized Linear Models were used to determine associations between RDW and postoperative inflammatory complications. Hematopoietic tissue activity was scored using fluor-18-(18F)-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography and associated with RDW using linear regression models. RESULTS: In total, 43(31.6%) and 73 patients (3.3%) suffered from inflammatory complications after AAA-repair or CABG, respectively; the majority being pneumonia in both cohorts. Postoperative inflammatory outcome incidence increased from 19.6% in the lowest to 48.9% in the highest RDW tertile with a corresponding risk ratio (RR) of 2.35 ([95%CI:1.08-5.14] P = 0.032) in AAA patients. In the CABG cohort, the incidence of postoperative inflammatory outcomes increased from 1.8% to 5.3% with an adjusted RR of 1.95 ([95%CI:1.02-3.75] P = 0.044) for the highest RDW tertile compared with the lowest RDW tertile. FDG-PET scans showed associations of RDW with tissue activity in the spleen (B = 0.517 [P = 0.001]) and the lumbar bone marrow (B = 0.480 [P = 0.004]). CONCLUSION: Elevated RDW associates with increased risk for postoperative inflammatory complications and hematopoietic tissue activity. RDW likely reflects chronic low-grade inflammation and should be considered to identify patients at risk for postoperative inflammatory complications following cardiovascular surgery.

Elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW), a simple measure of red blood cell size heterogeneity, has been associated with increased mortality and morbidity in the elderly population, which might reflect systemic inflammation and malnutrition. However, whether elevated RDW is associated with prevalent morphometric vertebral fracture (VF) in older adults has not been investigated. We examined 2127 individuals (mean age 71.7 years; women 66%) from a community-based cohort. VF was defined as ≥ 25% reduction in vertebral column height using the Genant semiquantitative method. Multiple VF was defined as the presence of VF at two or more sites. The prevalence of any VF and multiple VF was 14% and 4%, respectively, increasing from the lowest to the highest RDW tertiles (12-18% and 3-6%, p for trend < 0.05 for all). RDW was positively associated with age, body mass index (BMI), malnutrition, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), whereas it was negatively associated with albumin, hemoglobin, and ferritin levels. Elevated RDW was associated with any VF [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.26; p = 0.008] and multiple VF (aOR 1.36; p = 0.010) after adjustment for covariates, including age, sex, BMI, hsCRP, malnutrition, self-reported previous fracture, falls, osteoporosis, and hemoglobin and ferritin levels. The association between elevated RDW and VF remained robust in subgroups with (aOR 1.39; p = 0.048) or without anemia (aOR 1.26; p = 0.030). Elevated RDW was associated with prevalent morphometric VF in community-dwelling elderly individuals, independent of anemia, inflammation, and nutritional status.

We prospectively studied the dose-dependent effect of transfused stored red blood cells (RBCs) on recipient RBC indices, deformability and cell density in 10 patients administered stored RBCs for blood transfusion during general surgery. There were dose-dependent decreases in mean corpuscular volume and increases in mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration after completion of 4- and 6-unit stored RBC transfusions. The amount of dense populations increased proportionately with the amount of stored RBCs transfused. The maximal deformability index value was significantly and dose-dependently decreased, suggesting that hemodynamic blood flow, especially the microcirculation may be impaired in patients who receive large amounts of stored RBCs.

Although depression and anxiety disorders are common comorbid conditions in alcohol dependence, few structural brain imaging studies have compared alcohol-dependent subjects with and without such comorbidity. In the current study, brain scans of 35 alcohol-dependent with and 40 individuals without diagnosis of a comorbid ICD-10 depressive or anxiety disorder receiving detoxification inpatient treatment were evaluated. Thickness and volumes of automatically segmented neuroanatomical structures were measured in FreeSurfer. Furthermore, associations of brain structure with biological markers and clinical severity markers of alcohol dependence were assessed. Despite comparable addiction severity, the non-comorbid group had evidence of higher cytotoxic effects of alcohol use on hepatic and haematological markers, and showed significantly smaller volumes of total cerebral, and cerebellar grey matter. Similarly, they showed unexpected smaller hippocampal and nucleus accumbens volumes, and thinner frontal, temporal and occipital cortices. Smaller brain volumes correlated with increased markers of hepatic and haematological dysfunction, and with longer duration of alcohol dependence in the non-comorbid group. Evidence of higher biomarkers of alcohol use may be indicative of more severe alcohol dependence or higher vulnerability to ethanol toxicity in this group. Furthermore, psychopathology-related drug treatment, which occurred in 53% of the comorbid group over the recent years, or tissue inflammation may have a moderate effect on the grade of cerebral atrophy in alcohol-dependent patients. Longitudinal studies are needed to investigate this issue more fully.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to analyze predictive performance of MCV in midterm ischemic events among SCAD patients undergoing elective PCI. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively included 226 consecutive patients with SCAD who received elective PCI. The patients were grouped based on MCV quartile values. The prognostic significance of MCV was assessed using univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses. RESULTS According to MCV quartile points (87.5 fL, 89.7 fL, and 92.4 fL, respectively), the included patients were divided into 4 groups, with an average follow-up of 34.2 months. There were 28 (48.3%) patients with stent thrombosis in the 1st quartile, 24 (29.1%) in the 2nd quartile, 18 (31.6%) in the 3rd quartile, and 15 (27.8%) in the 4th quartile (log-rank test, P=0.027). Multivariate analysis confirmed that MCV 1st quartile (HRadj=2.047, 95% CI 1.041-4.026; P=0.038), ALT (HRadj=1.013, 95% CI 1.004-1.023; P=0.004) and number of PCI vessels (HRadj=1.198 95% CI 1.013-1.415; P=0.034) were risk factors for ischemic events. The restenosis rate in patients belonging to the MCV 1st quartile was 2 times higher than that in MCV 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quartile groups (P=0.007). CONCLUSIONS MCV value may be independently correlated with restenosis in SCAD patients undergoing PCI. Low MCV predicts high risk of in-stent restenosis.
