RESUMEN

Genome sequences are known for two archaic hominins-Neanderthals and Denisovans-which interbred with anatomically modern humans as they dispersed out of Africa. We identified high-confidence archaic haplotypes in 161 new genomes spanning 14 island groups in Island Southeast Asia and New Guinea and found large stretches of DNA that are inconsistent with a single introgressing Denisovan origin. Instead, modern Papuans carry hundreds of gene variants from two deeply divergent Denisovan lineages that separated over 350 thousand years ago. Spatial and temporal structure among these lineages suggest that introgression from one of these Denisovan groups predominantly took place east of the Wallace line and continued until near the end of the Pleistocene. A third Denisovan lineage occurs in modern East Asians. This regional mosaic suggests considerable complexity in archaic contact, with modern humans interbreeding with multiple Denisovan groups that were geographically isolated from each other over deep evolutionary time.

Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1-6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m-2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

This article provides an update on the global cancer burden using the GLOBOCAN 2020 estimates of cancer incidence and mortality produced by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Worldwide, an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases (18.1 million excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths (9.9 million excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) occurred in 2020. Female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, with an estimated 2.3 million new cases (11.7%), followed by lung (11.4%), colorectal (10.0 %), prostate (7.3%), and stomach (5.6%) cancers. Lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death, with an estimated 1.8 million deaths (18%), followed by colorectal (9.4%), liver (8.3%), stomach (7.7%), and female breast (6.9%) cancers. Overall incidence was from 2-fold to 3-fold higher in transitioned versus transitioning countries for both sexes, whereas mortality varied <2-fold for men and little for women. Death rates for female breast and cervical cancers, however, were considerably higher in transitioning versus transitioned countries (15.0 vs 12.8 per 100,000 and 12.4 vs 5.2 per 100,000, respectively). The global cancer burden is expected to be 28.4 million cases in 2040, a 47% rise from 2020, with a larger increase in transitioning (64% to 95%) versus transitioned (32% to 56%) countries due to demographic changes, although this may be further exacerbated by increasing risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to build a sustainable infrastructure for the dissemination of cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries is critical for global cancer control.

The Pacific region is of major importance for addressing questions regarding human dispersals, interactions with archaic hominins and natural selection processes1. However, the demographic and adaptive history of Oceanian populations remains largely uncharacterized. Here we report high-coverage genomes of 317 individuals from 20 populations from the Pacific region. We find that the ancestors of Papuan-related ('Near Oceanian') groups underwent a strong bottleneck before the settlement of the region, and separated around 20,000-40,000 years ago. We infer that the East Asian ancestors of Pacific populations may have diverged from Taiwanese Indigenous peoples before the Neolithic expansion, which is thought to have started from Taiwan around 5,000 years ago2-4. Additionally, this dispersal was not followed by an immediate, single admixture event with Near Oceanian populations, but involved recurrent episodes of genetic interactions. Our analyses reveal marked differences in the proportion and nature of Denisovan heritage among Pacific groups, suggesting that independent interbreeding with highly structured archaic populations occurred. Furthermore, whereas introgression of Neanderthal genetic information facilitated the adaptation of modern humans related to multiple phenotypes (for example, metabolism, pigmentation and neuronal development), Denisovan introgression was primarily beneficial for immune-related functions. Finally, we report evidence of selective sweeps and polygenic adaptation associated with pathogen exposure and lipid metabolism in the Pacific region, increasing our understanding of the mechanisms of biological adaptation to island environments.

BACKGROUND: Adiposity can be measured using BMI (which is based on weight and height) as well as indices of abdominal adiposity. We examined the association between BMI and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) within and across populations of different world regions and quantified how well these two metrics discriminate between people with and without hypertension. METHODS: We used data from studies carried out from 1990 to 2023 on BMI, WHtR and hypertension in people aged 20-64 years in representative samples of the general population in eight world regions. We graphically compared the regional distributions of BMI and WHtR, and calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients between BMI and WHtR within each region. We used mixed-effects linear regression to estimate the extent to which WHtR varies across regions at the same BMI. We graphically examined the prevalence of hypertension and the distribution of people who have hypertension both in relation to BMI and WHtR, and we assessed how closely BMI and WHtR discriminate between participants with and without hypertension using C-statistic and net reclassification improvement (NRI). FINDINGS: The correlation between BMI and WHtR ranged from 0·76 to 0·89 within different regions. After adjusting for age and BMI, mean WHtR was highest in south Asia for both sexes, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. Mean WHtR was lowest in central and eastern Europe for both sexes, in the high-income western region for women, and in Oceania for men. Conversely, to achieve an equivalent WHtR, the BMI of the population of south Asia would need to be, on average, 2·79 kg/m2 (95% CI 2·31-3·28) lower for women and 1·28 kg/m2 (1·02-1·54) lower for men than in the high-income western region. In every region, hypertension prevalence increased with both BMI and WHtR. Models with either of these two adiposity metrics had virtually identical C-statistics and NRIs for every region and sex, with C-statistics ranging from 0·72 to 0·81 and NRIs ranging from 0·34 to 0·57 in different region and sex combinations. When both BMI and WHtR were used, performance improved only slightly compared with using either adiposity measure alone. INTERPRETATION: BMI can distinguish young and middle-aged adults with higher versus lower amounts of abdominal adiposity with moderate-to-high accuracy, and both BMI and WHtR distinguish people with or without hypertension. However, at the same BMI level, people in south Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa, have higher WHtR than in the other regions. As the first in-person Asia Oceania Human Proteomics Organization (AOHUPO) congress since 2018, the 11th AOHUPO congress was an opportune time for the research community to reconnect and to renew friendships after the long period of restricted travel due to the global pandemic. Moreover, this congress was a great opportunity for the many AO regional proteomics and mass spectrometry scientists to meet in Singapore to exchange ideas and to present their latest findings. Cohosted by the Singapore Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Malaysian Proteomics Society and held in conjunction with the seventh Asia Oceania Agricultural Proteomics Organization Congress and Singapore Society for Mass Spectrometry 2023, the meeting featured both human and agricultural proteomics. Over five hundred scientists from the AO region converged on the MAX Atria @ Singapore EXPO, Changi, Singapore from May 8 to 10 for the main congress. The diverse program was made up of 64 invited speakers and panellists for seven plenary lectures, 27 concurrent symposia, precongress and postcongress workshops, and 174 poster presentations. The AOHUPO society were able to celebrate not only their 20th anniversary but also the outstanding academic research from biological and agricultural proteomics and related 'omics fields being conducted across the Asia-Oceania region.

Beginning ~3,500 to 3,300 y B.P., humans voyaged into Remote Oceania. Radiocarbon-dated archaeological evidence coupled with cultural, linguistic, and genetic traits indicates two primary migration routes: a Southern Hemisphere and a Northern Hemisphere route. These routes are separated by low-lying, equatorial atolls that were settled during secondary migrations ~1,000 y later after their exposure by relative sea-level fall from a mid-Holocene highstand. High volcanic islands in the Federated States of Micronesia (Pohnpei and Kosrae) also lie between the migration routes and settlement is thought to have occurred during the secondary migrations despite having been above sea level during the initial settlement of Remote Oceania. We reconstruct relative sea level on Pohnpei and Kosrae using radiocarbon-dated mangrove sediment and show that, rather than falling, there was a ~4.3-m rise over the past ~5,700 y. This rise, likely driven by subsidence, implies that evidence for early settlement could lie undiscovered below present sea level. The potential for earlier settlement invites reinterpretation of migration pathways into Remote Oceania and monument building. The UNESCO World Heritage sites of Nan Madol (Pohnpei) and Leluh (Kosrae) were constructed when relative sea level was ~0.94 m (~770 to 750 y B.P.) and ~0.77 m (~640 to 560 y B.P.) lower than present, respectively. Therefore, it is unlikely that they were originally constructed as islets separated by canals filled with ocean water, which is their prevailing interpretation. Due to subsidence, we propose that these islands and monuments are more vulnerable to future relative sea-level rise than previously identified.

PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most commonly transmitted sexually transmitted infection. HPV infections have been on the rise among males, especially in the form of oropharyngeal cancer. Despite this, there is a gap in healthcare guidelines to increase HPV vaccine administration among males. In this study, we focus on the Indigenous population of North America and Oceania to determine existing barriers resulting in low HPV vaccination rates among the population. METHOD: We surveyed peer-reviewed literature on the awareness of HPV infection among Indigenous males in North America and Oceania. Using keywords HPV plus male, men or boy, and ethnical filters such as Indigenous, Aboriginal or First Nations, we retrieved 54 articles based on titles, of which 15 were included after reading the abstracts. RESULTS: Reported HPV awareness was generally low in Indigenous males in North America, with no peer-reviewed data from Oceania. The lower understanding by males compared to females was largely attributable to misconceptions about HPV-related diseases, their transmission, and prevention. Lack of awareness and concern toward the risk of contracting HPV infection in Indigenous males suggests an impediment in disseminating health information about this cancer-causing virus. CONCLUSION: Culturally sensitive education, with emphasis on Indigenous males, is needed to improve this group's HPV knowledge. Researchers should also engage meaningfully with Indigenous communities by building rapport to achieve a positive change in attitude.

AIM: We aim to determine the evolutionary origins and population genetics of mallard-like ducks of Oceania, greater Indonesia, and the Philippines. LOCATION: Oceania, greater Indonesia, and the Philippines. TAXON: Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Pacific black duck (A. superciliosa spp.), and Philippine duck (A. luzonica) METHODS: Thousands of nuclear ddRAD-seq loci and the mitochondrial DNA control region were assayed across individuals representative of each species' range. We assessed population structure and phylogenetic relationships, as well as estimated demographic histories to reconstruct the biogeographical history of each species. RESULTS: Philippine and Pacific black ducks represent unique genetic lineages that diverged from the mallard 1-2 million years ago. We find no support for the Philippine duck representing a hybrid species as once posited; however, their low levels of genetic diversity requires further attention. We find a lack of substructure among Philippine ducks. However, we found pronounced differentiation between subspecies of Pacific black ducks, especially between A. s. superciliosa from New Zealand and A. s. rogersi from Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste, Indonesia. Anas superciliosa pelewensis gave mixed results; individuals from the Solomon Islands were differentiated from the other subspecies, but those from the island of Aunu'u, American Samoa, were genetically more similar to A. s. rogersi than A. s. pelewensis samples from the Solomon Islands. Finally, we find limited evidence of interspecific gene flow at evolutionary scales, and mallard introgression among contemporary samples. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: Mallard-like ducks radiated across Oceania, greater Indonesia, and the Philippines within the last 2 million years. Only the Pacific black duck showed unique sub-structuring that largely followed known sub-species ranges, except for A. s. pelewensis. We posit that the high interrelatedness among Solomon Island samples suggests that their genetic distinctiveness may simply be the result of high levels of genetic drift. In contrast, we conclude that mainland Australian Pacific black ducks were the most likely source for the recent colonization of American Samoa. As a result, our findings suggest that either the A. s. pelewensis subspecies designations and/or its geographical range may require re-evaluation. Continued re-evaluation of evolutionary and taxonomic relationships is necessary when attempting to reconstruct and understand biogeographical histories, with important implications towards any attempts to implement conservation strategies.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess global trends in mean birthweights at term, as reported in peer-reviewed literature. DATA SOURCES: We electronically searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science up to September 2023, using combinations of the search terms: "birth weight"; "birth-weight"; "birthweight"; "trend". There were no restrictions based on language or geographic area. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We included all ecological and observational studies reporting mean birthweight at term as a continuous numerical variable over time. METHODS: We assessed the quality of included studies using the Dufault and Klar checklist modified by Betran et al. Univariate and multivariate linear models were used to examine the effects of time (years) and geographical origins. Subgroup analyses focused on national data sources and on data collected from 1950 onward. RESULTS: Among 6447 reviewed articles, 29 met our criteria, reporting mean birthweight data from over 183 million infants worldwide. Most studies were hospital-based (48.3%), 44.8% used national data, and a minority used municipality, community, or regional data (6.9%). Geographically, North America (31.0%) had the highest representation, followed by Asia and Europe (27.6% each), and South America and Oceania (6.9% each). Our univariate linear regression model (Model 1) revealed a significant increase in mean birthweight at term over time (4.74 g/y; 95% confidence interval, 3.95-5.53; P<.001). Model 2, incorporating continental dummy variables into the first model, confirmed this trend (3.85 g/y; 95% confidence interval, 2.96-4.74; P<.001). Model 3, focusing on available national data, did not find a significant relationship. Model 4 narrowed its focus on records from 1950 onward, reporting a robust annual increase of 7.26 g/y (95% confidence interval, 6.19-8.33; P<.001). Model 5, adjusting for the number of participants included in each study, reported a conclusive mean term birthweight increase of 1.46 g/y (95% confidence interval, 0.74-2.18; P<.001). CONCLUSION: This systematic review of 29 studies shows an increase in term birthweights over time, particularly when considering data since 1950. Limitations include study quality variations, data source diversity, and data sparsity, underscoring the need for future research to use precise gestational age distinctions and predetermined time frames to gain a deeper understanding of this trend and its implications for maternal and child health.

AIM: We aimed to assess the global implications of low physical activity (LPA) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019. METHODS: The analysis was conducted by examining the age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rates over a 30-year period. To assess the trends, we utilized estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs). RESULTS: The study revealed a notable increase in the burden of DALYs attributable to T2DM resulting from LPA, with an EAPC of 0.84 (95% confidence interval 0.78-0.89). Among the regions examined, Oceania showed the highest burden, whereas Eastern Europe exhibited the lowest burden. Specifically, within the Central Asia region, a considerable increase in T2DM-LPA DALYs was observed, with an EAPC of 3.18 (95% confidence interval 3.01-3.36). The burden associated with T2DM-LPA DALYs was found to be similar between genders and increased across all age groups, peaking in the 80-84 years. Furthermore, there was a clear association between the socio-demographic index (SDI) and the age-standardized DALYs rate. Regions categorized as low-middle and middle SDI experienced a substantial rise in burden. CONCLUSION: This study highlights a substantial increase in the T2DM-LPA DALYs in low-middle and middle SDI regions, as well as among individuals aged 80-84 years. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing comprehensive global health interventions that promote physical activity, particularly targeting high-risk populations and regions.

BACKGROUND: Oceania is a continent, covering more than 8 million km2, with a population of more than 44 million people. In different countries landing in Oceania, various prevalence of MS has been reported, so we designed this systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of MS in Oceania. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. We also searched references of included studies, and conference abstracts. The search was done on January 1, 2023, by two independent researchers. We extracted the name of the first author, country, publication year, prevalence period, number of study participants, total female and male population, disease duration, type of MS, mean duration of the disease, mean age at disease onset, mean Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), and total female and male patients with MS. RESULTS: A literature search revealed 81,044 records; after deleting duplicates, 38,260 records remained. One hundred and six full texts were evaluated, and finally, seventeen studies remained for systematic review. Most studies were done in Newcastle; eight studies were done in 1961, 8 in 1981, 2 in 1996, and 2 in 2001. In all other years, only one study was done. The pooled prevalence of MS in 1961 in Oceania was estimated as 19.85/100,000 (I2=70.3%, p=0.001). The pooled prevalence of MS in 1981 in Oceania was estimated as 39.07/100,000 (I2 =88%, p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The result of this systematic review and meta-analysis shows that the prevalence of MS has increased dramatically during the timespan in Oceania.

The narrow genetics of most crops is a fundamental vulnerability to food security. This makes wild crop relatives a strategic resource of genetic diversity that can be used for crop improvement and adaptation to new agricultural challenges. Here, we uncover the contribution of one wild species accession, Arachis cardenasii GKP 10017, to the peanut crop (Arachis hypogaea) that was initiated by complex hybridizations in the 1960s and propagated by international seed exchange. However, until this study, the global scale of the dispersal of genetic contributions from this wild accession had been obscured by the multiple germplasm transfers, breeding cycles, and unrecorded genetic mixing between lineages that had occurred over the years. By genetic analysis and pedigree research, we identified A. cardenasii-enhanced, disease-resistant cultivars in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. These cultivars provide widespread improved food security and environmental and economic benefits. This study emphasizes the importance of wild species and collaborative networks of international expertise for crop improvement. However, it also highlights the consequences of the implementation of a patchwork of restrictive national laws and sea changes in attitudes regarding germplasm that followed in the wake of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Today, the botanical collections and multiple seed exchanges which enable benefits such as those revealed by this study are drastically reduced. The research reported here underscores the vital importance of ready access to germplasm in ensuring long-term world food security.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Data from public health surveillance systems are important for estimating country-level CDI burden. CDI surveillance can be population-based or hospital-based. Population-based surveillance results in overall estimates of CDI incidence (cases per 100,000 population-per-year), and hospital-based surveillance results in estimates of hospital-based CDI incidence (cases per 10,000 patient-days) or CDI admission rates (cases per 1,000 admissions). We sought to better understand temporal trends in CDI incidence reported in publicly available surveillance data worldwide and describe varying surveillance methods. We identified 13 countries in Europe, North America, and Oceania with publicly available population-based and/or hospital-based CDI surveillance data in online reports and/or dashboards. Additional countries in Europe, in particular, also conduct hospital-based CDI surveillance. Inconsistent CDI case definitions and surveillance approaches between countries limit the interpretability of multi-country comparisons. Nonetheless, publicly available CDI surveillance data enabled us to compare CDI incidence among countries with population-based and/or hospital-based surveillance systems and to describe trends in CDI incidence within countries over time. The highest CDI incidence is in the United States. While there have been recent declines in CDI incidence in all countries, the CDI burden remains high, and the need persists for CDI prevention strategies in communities and healthcare settings.

Advancements in medical science and digital access made it easier for individuals to seek appropriate treatment. Despite living in the current information era, the practice of quackery has continued worldwide. The current scoping review was planned to explore different definitions and laws related to quackery, and the acceptance of allied healthcare services in traditional, cultural and legal contexts. The review examined a total of 3,327 published studies and 400 pieces of grey literature, including existing laws, regulatory authority websites, news articles and reports. A total of 56 studies and 21 excerpts were shortlisted for analysis. The definitions of quackery varied significantly across regions, but a general consensus is that unauthorised healthcare practices constitute quackery. Legal perspectives differed worldwide, with Europe, North America and Oceania discouraging allied healthcare services, such as homeopathy, naturopathy and traditional methods, considering them quackery. In contrast, Asian and African regions endorsed allied healthcare and established provider registration and licensing systems.

BACKGROUND: Criticisms have emerged that cancer medicines offer modest benefits at increasingly high prices. Reimbursement decisions made by health technology assessment (HTA) agencies have become a complex endeavour for cancer medicines. Most high-income countries (HICs) use HTA criteria to identify high-value medicines for reimbursement under public drug coverage plans. We compared HTA criteria specific for cancer medicines in economically similar HICs, to understand how these criteria contribute to reimbursement decisions. METHODS: We did an international, cross-sectional analysis in collaboration with author investigators across eight HICs, from the Group of Seven (known as G7; Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan) and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand). Publicly available data from HTA agency reports and official documentation were extracted and analysed between Aug 15, 2021, and July 31, 2022. We collected data pertaining to the decision-making criteria used by the national HTA agency; HTA reimbursement status for 34 medicine-indication pairs corresponding to 15 unique US top-selling cancer medicines; and HTA reimbursement status for 18 cancer medicine-indication pairs (13 unique medicines) with minimal clinical benefit (score of 1 on the European Society of Medical Oncology Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale). Descriptive statistics were used to compare HTA decision criteria and drug reimbursement recommendations (or for Germany and Japan, final reimbursement status) across the eight countries. FINDINGS: Therapeutic impact related to clinical outcomes of the new medicine was a uniform criterion across the eight countries, whereas quality of evidence (under the remit of therapeutic impact assessment) and equity were infrequently cited criteria. Only the German HTA agency mandated that surrogate endpoints be validated in therapeutic impact assessment. All countries except Germany included formal cost-effectiveness analyses within HTA reports. England and Japan were the only countries that specified a cost-effectiveness threshold. Of the 34 medicine-indication pairs corresponding to US top-selling cancer medicines, Germany reimbursed the maximum (34 [100%]), followed by Italy (32 [94%] recommended for reimbursement), Japan (28 [82%] reimbursed), Australia, Canada, England, and France (27 [79%] recommended for reimbursement), and New Zealand (12 [35%] recommended for reimbursement). Of the 18 cancer medicine-indication pairs with marginal clinical benefit, Germany reimbursed 15 (83%) and Japan reimbursed 12 (67%). France recommended nine (50%) for reimbursement, followed by Italy (seven [39%]), Canada (five [28%]), and Australia and England (three [17%] each). New Zealand did not recommend any medicine-indications with marginal clinical benefit for reimbursement. Considering the overall cumulative proportion across the eight countries, 58 (21%) of 272 indications for the US top-selling medicines and 90 (63%) of 144 marginally beneficial medicine-indications were not recommended for reimbursement or reimbursed. INTERPRETATION: Our findings indicate discordance in public reimbursement decisions across economically similar countries, despite overlapping HTA decision criteria. This suggests a need for improved transparency around the nuances of the criteria to ensure improved access to high-value cancer medicines, and deprioritisation of low-value cancer medicines. Health systems have opportunities to improve their HTA decision-making processes by learning from the systems in other countries. FUNDING: None.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has emerged and caused multiple pandemic waves in the following six countries: India, Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Some of the countries have been much less studied in this devastating pandemic. This study aims to assess the impact of the Omicron variant in these six countries and estimate the infection fatality rate (IFR) and the reproduction number [Formula: see text] in these six South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania countries. METHODS: We propose a Susceptible-Vaccinated-Exposed-Infectious-Hospitalized-Death-Recovered model with a time-varying transmission rate [Formula: see text] to fit the multiple waves of the COVID-19 pandemic and to estimate the IFR and [Formula: see text] in the aforementioned six countries. The level of immune evasion and the intrinsic transmissibility advantage of the Omicron variant are also considered in this model. RESULTS: We fit our model to the reported deaths well. We estimate the IFR (in the range of 0.016 to 0.136%) and the reproduction number [Formula: see text] (in the range of 0 to 9) in the six countries. Multiple pandemic waves in each country were observed in our simulation results. CONCLUSIONS: The invasion of the Omicron variant caused the new pandemic waves in the six countries. The higher [Formula: see text] suggests the intrinsic transmissibility advantage of the Omicron variant. Our model simulation forecast implies that the Omicron pandemic wave may be mitigated due to the increasing immunized population and vaccine coverage.

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic, idiopathic illnesses of the digestive tract, which can impact adversely on children's quality of life and burden health systems. International studies have shown these diseases are increasing. The aim was to describe pediatric IBD epidemiology across Oceania by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of incidence and prevalence. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched in October 2022 for studies reporting rates of IBD, Crohn disease (CD), or ulcerative colitis (UC) in children (≤19 years). Several data collection methodologies were included and pooled estimates of incidence and prevalence were calculated using a random effects model with I2 measures of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Nineteen articles provided 15 incidence and 7 prevalence studies. Fourteen studies were from Australia, 8 studies from New Zealand, and no studies were found from the Pacific Islands. Study dates ranged from 1950 to 2020 with 11 studies using population-based designs. Pooled estimates for annual incidence were IBD 4.1 (3.4-4.8, I2 = 98.7), CD 2.3 (1.9-2.7, I2 = 98.6), and UC 0.9 (0.6-1.1, I2 = 96.8) per 100,000 person-years. Prevalence rates were IBD 36.0 (23.5-48.5, I2 = 98.4), CD 23.2 (6.6-39.8, I2 = 97.8), and UC 7.6 (2.7-12.5, I2 = 99.6) per 100,000 persons. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric IBD is prevalent in Oceania with high incidence rates, particularly for CD. Low rates of IBD were observed in indigenous Australian, Maori, and New Zealand Pacific children and there were no studies from the Pacific Islands highlighting this as an area in need of further research.

RESUMEN

The expansion of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic can be further adapted and extended to align with principles of climate justice. We argue that high-emission countries with well-developed medical systems, like Australia, should support communities disproportionately impacted by climate change who request assistance, like in small island states of Oceania. Linking health services in small island states with neighbouring countries' medical systems can support sustainability, if such reconfigurations are appropriately resourced and accessibility is prioritized. Investments in telehealth, particularly reconfiguring services through community-led linkages with larger medical systems, supports the sustainable development goal of universal access to healthcare.

The Asia-Oceania Human Proteome Organization (AOHUPO; www.aohupo.org) was officially founded on June 7, 2001, by Richard J. Simpson (Australia), Akira Tsugita (Japan), and Young-Ki Paik (Korea) and launched on October 1-4, 2001, at the second scientific meeting of the International Proteomics Conference held in Canberra, Australia. Inaugural council members of the AOHUPO elected were Richard J. Simpson (Australia, president), Qi-Chang Xia (China), Kazuyuki Nakamura (Japan), Akira Tsugita (Japan, VIce President), Young-Ki Paik (Korea, secretary general), Mike Hubbard (New Zealand), Max C. M. Chung (Singapore), Shui-Tien Chen (Taiwan), and John Bennett (Philippines). The first AOHUPO conference was held on March 26-27, 2002, at the Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, conjointly with the second Annual Meeting of KHUPO. Since then, biennial AOHUPO conferences have been held in Taipei (2004), Singapore (2006), Cairns (2008), Hyderabad (2010), Beijing (2012), Bangkok (2014), Sun Moon Lake (2016), and Osaka (2018). The 10th AOHUPO conference is scheduled to be held in Busan on June 30 to July 2, 2021, to celebrate our 20th anniversary.
