In recent years, a growing body of research has focused on the environment and economic growth nexus. However, there has not been much research done on how environmentally friendly technologies and institutional quality affect pollution levels. It is found that in developed countries, the rate of environmental deterioration has slowed thanks to more sustainable environmental regulations, advances in technology, and improvements in the quality of institutions. In contrast, limited modern technology in developing nations has resulted in havens of high carbon emissions. Therefore, the current research tried to analyze the environmental quality by using green technologies (GT), institutional quality (IQ), and energy efficiency (EE) as independent variables. In this study, we utilized data from 1995 to 2019 from BRICS countries to estimate long-term and short-term relationships. Used second-generation econometric techniques indicated that IQ, GT, and EE repair reduced environmental damage. The EKC does not exist, which means pollution in selected countries will improve with an expansion in economic activities. In the long term, a reform in institutions and more spending are required on green technologies to secure a sustainable future in BRICS countries. Results hold up when it comes to policy implications.

This study aims to assess the role of sustainable livelihood capital, the mediation of investments and farming purposes, and the moderation of climatic and non-climatic factors in the adaptation process, particularly in the aspects of Crop, Farm, Irrigation, and Economic Management. Moreover, guided by the VIABLE (Values and Investments for Agent-Based Interaction and Learning in Environmental Systems) framework, we analyze stakeholders' actions, priorities, and goals in the climate change adaptation process. A structured questionnaire was designed based on a five-point Likert scale covering the concepts of livelihood capital, climate change adaptation, investment priorities, farming constraints, and farmers' decision-making factors. Field data were collected from 800 farmers during December 2021 to February 2022 in the irrigated agricultural regions in the Indus Plain of the Punjab and Sindh provinces, Pakistan. We employed the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling approach to the VIABLE framework (VIABLE-SEM) to analyze the collected data. The results confirm livelihood capital as the most significant determinant (beta = 0.57, effect size = 0.503) for farmers' adaptation strategies in the Indus plain. Other variables, such as the principal purpose of farming, available investment options, natural and human constraints, appear less important. We identified 13 significant viability pathways that show investment priorities, farming purposes, and constraints faced by the farmers in climate change adaptation. The study also found that non-climatic factors negatively influence (beta = -0.156) the relationship between capital and adaptation, while climatic factors positively influence (beta = 0.050) this relationship. Interestingly, the presence of these influencing factors increases the adaptive capacity of farmers. These findings have important implications for policymakers and researchers in designing and implementing effective climate change adaptation strategies in the agricultural sector of Pakistan.

An imbalanced dataset is commonly found in at least one class, which are typically exceeded by the other ones. A machine learning algorithm (classifier) trained with an imbalanced dataset predicts the majority class (frequently occurring) more than the other minority classes (rarely occurring). Training with an imbalanced dataset poses challenges for classifiers; however, applying suitable techniques for reducing class imbalance issues can enhance classifiers' performance. In this study, we consider an imbalanced dataset from an educational context. Initially, we examine all shortcomings regarding the classification of an imbalanced dataset. Then, we apply data-level algorithms for class balancing and compare the performance of classifiers. The performance of the classifiers is measured using the underlying information in their confusion matrices, such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F measure. The results show that classification with an imbalanced dataset may produce high accuracy but low precision and recall for the minority class. The analysis confirms that undersampling and oversampling are effective for balancing datasets, but the latter dominates.

In this study dibenzylidene ketone derivatives (2E,5E)-2-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-5-(4-nitrobenzylidene) cyclopentanone (AK-1a) and (1E,4E)-4-(4-nitrobenzylidene)-1-(4-nitrophenyl) oct-1-en-3-one (AK-2a) were newly synthesized, inspired from curcuminoids natural origin. Novel scheme was used for synthesis of AK-1a and AK-2a. The synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic techniques. AK-1a and AK-2a showed high computational affinities (E-value > - 9.0 kcal/mol) against cyclooxygenase-1, cyclooxygenase-2, proteinase-activated receptor 1 and vitamin K epoxide reductase. AK-1a and AK-2a showed moderate docking affinities (E-value > - 8.0 kcal/mol) against mu receptor, kappa receptor, delta receptor, human capsaicin receptor, glycoprotein IIb/IIIa, prostacyclin receptor I2, antithrombin-III, factor-II and factor-X. AK-1a and AK-2a showed lower affinities (E-value > - 7.0 kcal/mol) against purinoceptor-3, glycoprotein-VI and purinergic receptor P2Y12. In analgesic activity, AK-1a and AK-2a decreased numbers of acetic acid-induced writhes (P < 0.001 vs. saline group) in mice. AK-1a and AK-2a significantly prolonged the latency time of mice (P < 0.05, P < 0.01 and P < 0.001 vs. saline group) in hotplate assay. AK-1a and AK-2a inhibited arachidonic acid and adenosine diphosphate induced platelet aggregation with IC50 values of 65.2, 37.7, 750.4 and 422 µM respectively. At 30, 100, 300 and 1000 µM concentrations, AK-1a and AK-2a increased plasma recalcification time (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 vs. saline group) respectively. At 100, 300 and 1000 µg/kg doses, AK-1a and AK-2a effectively prolonged bleeding time (P < 0.001 and P < 0.01 vs. saline group) respectively. Thus in-silico, in-vitro and in-vivo investigation of AK-1a and AK-2a reports their analgesic, antiplatelet and anticoagulant actions.

We describe a case of a patient from Far North Queensland, Australia, with life-threatening hepatotoxicity caused by ipilimumab induced immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Our patient presented with non-specific symptoms including malaise, lethargy and fevers. Her work up revealed acute hepatitis, which was presumed to be related to ipilimumab treatment for her metastatic melanoma. Causality for ipilimumab was assessed with the CIOMS scale (Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences) and provided a causality level of 'highly probable' (score +9). She was started on methylprednisolone as per guidelines for ipilimumab induced irAEs. On the second day of treatment her transaminases enzymes unexpectedly rose several hundred times. Investigations for other causes of acute hepatitis including abdominal imaging were negative. She was started up front on equine antithymocyte globulin, mycophenolate moefetil and continued on methylprednisolone. She recovered clinically and biochemically in 2 weeks and continues to remain well.

INTRODUCTION: Plasmodium vivax malaria affects billions of people annually. This study aimed to note the presentations and complications and subsequently to identify the determinants of in-patient hospital care of P. vivax malaria patients presenting to a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Severity of the shock was also assessed using a shock index. METHODOLOGY: This study descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Emergency Department of Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. All adult patients with a positive P. vivax peripheral film and/or immunochromatography admitted through the department were studied during 2009. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 16. Keeping the length of stay at a cut-off of 48 hours after admission, the independent Student-t test was applied. Level of significance was taken at 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 97 patients were included in the study. Fever was the most common presentation. A significant number of patients had nonspecific complaints, but tachycardia, altered mental status, and adult respiratory distress syndrome were important findings. Mean shock index was 1 (SD 0.26). Common reasons for admission were thrombocytopenia and dehydration. Some patients were admitted for more than 48 hours. Complications included pneumonia and bleeding requiring platelet transfusion. CONCLUSION: This study highlights that the debilitating impact of P. vivax malaria remains high. Although the effects of severe vivax malaria can be contained through aggressive resuscitation and specific therapy, sensitivity and awareness of this complicated course must be highlighted among caregivers.
