The aims of this study were to evaluate the doxorubicin concentration that induces toxic effects on in vitro culture of isolated mouse secondary follicles and to investigate whether resveratrol can inhibit or reduce this toxicity. Secondary follicles were isolated and cultured for 12 days in control medium (α-MEM+) or in α-MEM+ supplemented with doxorubicin (0.1 µg/ml) or different concentrations of resveratrol (0.5, 2, or 5 µM) associated with doxorubicin (0.1 µg/ml) (experiment 1). For experiment 2, follicles were cultured in α-MEM+ alone or supplemented with doxorubicin (0.3 µg/ml) or different concentrations of resveratrol (5 or 10 µM) associated or not with doxorubicin (0.3 µg/ml) (experiment 2). The endpoints analyzed were morphology (survival), antrum formation, follicular diameter, mitochondrial activity, glutathione (GSH) levels and DNA fragmentation. In the first experiment, doxorubicin (0.1 µg/ml) maintained survival and antrum formation similar to the control, while 5 µM resveratrol showed increased parameters, maintained mitochondrial activity and increased GSH levels compared to the control. In the second experiment, doxorubicin (0.3 µg/ml) reduced survival, antrum formation and follicular diameter compared to the control. Resveratrol at a concentration of 10 µM attenuated the damage caused by doxorubicin by improving follicular survival and did not present DNA fragmentation. In conclusion, supplementation of the in vitro culture medium with 0.3 µg/ml doxorubicin reduced the survival and impaired the development of mouse-isolated preantral follicles. Resveratrol at 10 µM reduced doxorubicin-induced follicular atresia, without DNA fragmentation in the follicles.

OBJECTIVES: Addressing migrant population's sexual health needs is essential, given the high vulnerability of this population, especially during migratory trajectories and when accessing health care in destination countries. The aim of this scoping review is to identify and describe the structural and intermediary determinants and their dimensions, which negatively influence sexual healthcare access in migrant population in the world in the last 20 years. STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review. METHODS: The search strategy was carried out in the databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, and CINAHL. The inclusion criteria were primary studies published in English or Spanish from 2000 to 2022, describing determinants or barriers to access to sexual health for international migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. The construction of the results was based on the social determinants of health framework. RESULTS: A total of 44 studies were included. Thirteen categories that negatively affect access to sexual health in migrants were identified-structural determinants: language and communication barriers, religious and cultural values, VIH stigma and discrimination, irregular migration status, financial constraints, racism and discrimination, gender inequalities, and lack of knowledge and awareness about sexuality and sexual health; and intermediary determinants: financial health coverage, privacy and confidentiality, health system navigation; health system and facilities, and psychosocial factors. CONCLUSION: The most relevant dimensions identified as barriers to access to health services were "culture and societal values" and "health system". Identifying the determinants that affect migrants' access to sexual health is relevant for the formulation of public policies with sociocultural relevance and an intersectional and human rights approach.

Pharmaceuticals and their by-products are recalcitrant contaminants in water. Moreover, the high consumption of these drugs has many detrimental effects on body waters and ecosystems. In this timely review, the advances in molecular engineering of layered double hydroxides (LDH) that have been used for the removal of pharmaceutical pollutants are discussed. The approach starts from the strategies to obtain homogeneous synthesis of LDH that allow the doping and/or surface functionalization of different metals and oxides, producing heterojunction systems as well as composites with carbon and silica-based materials with high surface area. Adsorption is considered as a traditional removal of pharmaceutical pollutants, so the kinetic and mechanism of this phenomenon are analyzed based on pH, temperature, ionic strength, in order to obtain new insights for the formation of multifunctional LDH. Advanced oxidation methodologies, mainly heterogeneous photocatalysis and Fenton-like processes, stand out as the more efficient even to obtain the mineralization of the drugs. The LDH have the advantage of structural memory that favors regeneration processes. The reconstruction of calcined LDH can be used to improve drug removal, through a combination of adsorption capacity/catalytic activity. A meticulous analysis of the persistence, toxicity and bioaccumulation of the most common pharmaceuticals has allowed us to highlight the ability of the LDH to remove recalcitrant drugs at relatively low concentrations (ppm, ppb), in contrast to other mixed oxide nanostructures and homogeneous oxidation processes. In this sense, the mechanism of drug removal by LDH is discussed based on the importance of the use of composites, scavenger agents, Fenton and electro-Fenton processes, membranes, thin films and coatings, among others. In addition, the ecotoxicity of LDH is also reviewed to indicate that these layered structures can exhibit biocompatibility or high toxicity depending on the adsorbed drug and ions/metals that compose them. Undoubtedly, the LDH have a unique flexible structure with adsorption capacity and catalytic activity, facts that explain the important reasons for their extensive use in the environmental remediation of pharmaceutical pollutants from water.

Hearing aids (HAs) are an effective strategy for auditory rehabilitation in patients with peripheral hearing deficits. Yet, the neurophysiological mechanisms behind HA use are still unclear. Thus far, most studies have focused on changes in the auditory system, although it is expected that hearing deficits affect a number of cognitive systems, notably speech. In the present study, we used audiometric evaluations in 14 patients with bilateral hearing loss before and after one year of continuous HA use and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and cortical thickness analysis in 12 and 10 of them compared with a normal hearing control group. Prior to HA fitting, fMRI activity was found reduced in the auditory and language systems and increased in visual and frontal areas, expanding to multimodal integration cortices, such as the superior temporal gyrus, intraparietal sulcus, and insula. One year after rehabilitation with HA, significant audiometric improvement was observed, especially in free-field Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) test and functional gain, a measure of HA efficiency. HA use increased fMRI activity in the auditory and language cortices and multimodal integration areas. Individual fMRI signal changes from all these areas were positively correlated with individual SRT changes. Before rehabilitation, cortical thickness was increased in parts of the prefrontal cortex, precuneus, fusiform gyrus, and middle temporal gyrus. It was reduced in the insula, supramarginal gyrus, medial temporal gyrus, occipital cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and claustrum. After HA use, increased cortical thickness was observed in multimodal integration regions, particularly the very caudal end of the superior temporal sulcus, the angular gyrus, and the inferior parietal gyrus/superior temporal gyrus/insula. Our data provide the first evidence that one year of HA use is related to functional and anatomical brain changes, notably in auditory and language systems, extending to multimodal cortices.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent disease in the elderly population, and it may affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the stomatognathic system. This study evaluated masticatory function in elderly patients with RA before and after oral rehabilitation with removable prostheses. Forty-five elders with partial or total edentulism who were using unsatisfactory removable prostheses were selected and assigned to 3 groups: RA with TMJ involvement, RA without TMJ involvement and healthy controls. Masticatory function was assessed in terms of masticatory performance (MP) and maximum bite force (MBF). The former was determined by the sieving method, and the latter was measured by pressure sensors placed in the bilateral molar regions. The variables were first evaluated in elderly subjects wearing unsatisfactory prostheses and re-assessed after participants had received new removable prostheses. Comparisons between groups and among time points were performed with analysis of variance for repeated measures and the Tukey-Kramer test (P < .05). Comparison among groups showed decreased MP in elders with RA before new prosthesis insertion (P < .05). Irrespective of TMJ involvement, MP improved after treatment in subjects with RA. Rheumatoid arthritis groups also showed decreased MBF (P < .05), which improved after new prosthesis insertion. Rheumatoid arthritis might impair masticatory function, and well-fitted removable prosthesis insertion might be very beneficial in elders with RA.

The aim of this study was to evaluate myeloid expression in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children and adolescents who had been referred to the Oncology Department in a hospital in the State of Maranhão based on demographic, laboratory, and clinical data. Myeloid expression was evaluated in 65 patients under 18 years of age who were diagnosed with morphological, cytochemical, and immunophenotypes of ALL. Demographic, laboratory (hemogram), and clinical variables were obtained from medical records. The sample was divided into groups with and without anomalous myeloid expression to analyze the variables. Myeloid expression was observed in 49.2% of the sample. Platelet count was significantly lower in the group of children without aberrant myeloid expression (33,627 platelets/mm(3), P = 0.01). A total of 88.9% of children with B-cell ALL without myeloid expression showed less than 50,000 platelets/mm(3) (P = 0.01). Thus, platelet count may be an important parameter in the diagnosis of children with ALL without myeloid aberrant expression and may indicate a greater risk of bleeding during treatment in this group.

OBJECTIVE: To document perinatal outcomes following use of the 'Solomon technique' in the selective photocoagulation of placental anastomoses for severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). METHODS: Between January 2010 and July 2012, data were collected from 102 consecutive monochorionic twin pregnancies complicated by severe TTTS that underwent fetoscopic laser ablation at four different centers. We compared outcomes between subjects that underwent selective laser coagulation using the Solomon technique (cases) and those that underwent selective laser coagulation without this procedure (controls). RESULTS: Of the 102 pregnancies examined, 26 (25.5%) underwent the Solomon technique and 76 (74.5%) did not. Of the 204 fetuses, 139 (68.1%) survived up to 30 days of age. At least one twin survived in 82 (80.4%) pregnancies and both twins survived in 57 (55.9%) pregnancies. When compared with the control group, the Solomon-technique group had a significantly higher survival rate for both twins (84.6 vs 46.1%; P < 0.01) and a higher overall neonatal survival rate (45/52 (86.5%) vs 94/152 (61.8%); P < 0.01). Use of the Solomon technique remained independently associated with dual twin survival (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 11.35 (95% CI, 3.11-53.14); P = 0.0007) and overall neonatal survival rate (aOR, 4.65 (95% CI, 1.59-13.62); P = 0.005) on multivariable analysis. There were no cases of recurrent TTTS or twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) in the Solomon-technique group. CONCLUSIONS: Use of the Solomon technique following selective laser coagulation of placental anastomoses appears to improve twin survival and may reduce the risk of recurrent TTTS and TAPS. Our data support the idea of performing a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the Solomon technique.

In a temporal difference (TD) learning approach to classical conditioning, a prediction error (PE) signal shifts from outcome deliverance to the onset of the conditioned stimulus. Omission of an expected outcome results in a negative PE signal, which is the initial step towards successful extinction. In order to visualize negative PE signaling during fear conditioning, we employed combined functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) and skin conductance response (SCR) measurements in a conditioning task with visual stimuli and mild electrical shocks. Positive PE signaling was associated with increased activation in the bilateral insula, supplementary motor area, brainstem, and visual cortices. Negative PE signaling was associated with increased activation in the ventromedial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices, the left lateral orbital gyrus, the middle temporal gyri, angular gyri, and visual cortices. The involvement of the ventromedial prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex in extinction learning has been well documented, and this study provides evidence for the notion that these regions are already involved in negative PE signaling during fear conditioning.

BACKGROUND: Adequate thyroid function is essential for normal growth and development of the fetus. Sonographic recognition of alterations in fetal thyroid dimensions may be the first sign of thyroid dysfunction, permitting early diagnosis and intervention. The main goal of this study was to build curves with reference values for ultrasound measurements of the fetal thyroid from 14 to 40 weeks of gestation. METHODS: This is a prospective longitudinal study of 90 Brazilian pregnant women, complementary to a cohort multicentre study named "WHO multicentre study for the development of growth standards from fetal life to childhood: the fetal component." Pregnant women without any pre-existing conditions that might affect fetal growth received antenatal care from the first trimester until childbirth, undergoing serial ultrasound evaluations of the fetus, including the thyroid. Longitudinal, anteroposterior, and transverse diameters of both thyroid lobes were measured in the fetus. Fetal thyroid lobe volume was also estimated. By quantile regression analysis, reference curves of measurements were fitted according to the gestational age. RESULTS: A reference standard of thyroid growth was defined during pregnancy by fitting curves of its measurements. Reference values for the 10th, 50th, and 90th centiles of fetal thyroid measurements (longitudinal, anteroposterior, transverse diameters, and lobe volume) were defined, from 14 to 40 weeks of gestation. CONCLUSION: We provided a reference curve of optimal thyroid development in a low-risk population that can be used as a standard of comparison to diagnose deviations from the norm. In addition, we demonstrated an alternative and simplified method for early recognition of thyroid morphological alterations by an individualized technique to evaluate the thyroid lobes.

The objective of this study was to evaluate possible side effects of insecticides used in soybean crops on pupae and adults of the egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) under laboratory conditions. The protocol was adapted from standard methodology stablished by the Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms Working Group of the International Organization for Biological and integrated Control (IOBC) for Trichogramma cacoeciae (Marchal) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). All tested benzoylureas, diacylhydrazines, diamides and spinosins as well as pyrethroid beta-cyfluthrin were harmless to T. podisi pupae and adults, and therefore, can be used in IPM without damage to this biological control agent. The tested organophosphate, pyrethroids (except beta-cyfluthrin) and its combinations with either neonicotinoids or diamides triggered deleterious effects on at least one of the life stages of the parasitoid and should, whenever possible, be replaced by other insecticides more selective to natural enemies.

Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) larvae prey on pest insects and mites in agroecosystems, and adults mainly feed on pollen, nectar, and honeydew. Therefore, preserving this lacewing in crop systems depends on having plants that provide these resources. The objectives of this research were to identify pollen grains ingested by Ch. externa adults collected in a diversified organic agroecosystem and to evaluate whether there is a difference in the amount of ingested pollen grains between males and females. The adults of Ch. externa were collected in four different crops during 13 months in Seropédica, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, using a collecting net. The adults were killed and underwent acetolysis, in order to recover the pollen in the gut. A total of 37,441 pollen grains from 19 Angiospermae families were found, besides 16 Pteridophyte spores. Among the recognized pollen grains, those of Poaceae were the majority, both in frequency of occurrence (87.5%) and in quantity (33496), and were found and recovered in every month of collection. Females and males ingested, respectively, 71.9 and 28.1% of the total number of Angiospermae pollen grains consumed by both sexes. The highest number of Poaceae pollens was obtained from the females (72.1% of the total number of Poaceae pollen, recovered from females + males). Taken as a whole, this study showed that adults of Ch. externa find possibilities to maintain throughout the year, in different crops, but the main source of pollen to males and females was Poaceae plants.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the association between readmission after liver transplantation and corresponding adverse drug reactions. METHODS: A total of 48 patients undergoing liver transplantation were prospectively followed for 1 year. Of these, 23 were readmitted and evaluated by a pharmacist for causes of adverse drug reaction. The detection of adverse drug reactions was based on a combination of clinical interviews and physical and laboratory exams. Adverse reactions were defined in accordance with the Naranjo algorithm. RESULTS: A total of 67.6% of all readmissions were related to adverse drug reactions, with tacrolimus accounting for 80% of the drug reactions. The most common cause of readmission was infection (48.6%), followed by procedure-related reasons (29.7%). Of all patients requiring admission, 39.1% had Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores below 21 at the time of transplantation, 17.4% had MELD scores between 21 and 29, and 43.5% had MELD scores above 29. Most (66.7%) of those readmitted more than twice had MELD scores above 29. CONCLUSION: Adverse drug reactions related to immunosuppressants frequently lead to readmission among liver transplant patients, and in our series tacrolimus was the most frequently associated drug.

The aim of this study was to compare the side-effects of glyphosate to the parasitoid Telenomus remus Nixon (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) when parasitoids were exposed to this chemical at the pupal (inside host eggs) and adult stages. Bioassays were conducted under laboratory conditions according to the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) standard methods for testing side-effects of pesticides to egg parasitoids. Different glyphosate-based pesticides (Roundup Original®, Roundup Ready®, Roundup Transorb®, Roundup WG®, and Zapp Qi®) were tested at the same acid equivalent concentration. Treatments were classified following the IOBC toxicity categories as (1) harmless, (2) slightly harmful, (3) moderately harmful, and (4) harmful. When tested against T. remus adults, Roundup Original®, Roundup Ready®, Roundup Transorb®, and Roundup WG® reduced parasitism 2 days after parasitoid emergence, being classified as slightly harmful. Differently, when tested against T. remus pupae, all tested glyphosate-based products did not differ in their lethal effect and therefore did not reduce T. remus adult emergence or parasitism capacity, being classified as harmless. However, differences on sublethal toxicity were found. Parasitism of individuals emerging from parasitized eggs sprayed at the pupal stage of T. remus with Zapp Qi® was lower compared to control, but parasitism was still higher than 66%, and therefore, Zapp Qi® was still classified as harmless. In conclusion, all tested glyphosate-based products can be used in agriculture without negative impact to T. remus as none was classified as harmful or moderately harmful to this parasitoid when exposure occurred at the pupal or adult stages.

RESUMO

Case report on right branch block, acute pulmonary oedema and enteritis caused by electric shock in a boy. The invasive hemodynamic study showed primary pulmonary hypertension, cardiogenic shock, and acute respiratory failure. The outcome was good, with total and progressive recovery of all lesions. The literature review revealed the rarity of pulmonary oedema and enteritis after an electric shock. The invasive haemodynamic data suggest physiopathological explanations for findings in the case and indicate therapeutic measures for similar situations.

Consolidation of extinction learning is a primary mechanism disrupted in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), associated with hypoactivity of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. A role for rapid eye movement (REM) sleep disturbances in this failure to consolidate extinction learning has been proposed. We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with simultaneous skin conductance response (SCR) measurements in 16 healthy participants during conditioning/extinction and later recall of extinction. The visual stimuli were basic geometric forms and electrical shocks functioned as the unconditioned stimulus. Between the conditioning/extinction and recall sessions, participants received a 90-min sleep window in the sleep laboratory. This daytime sleep was polysomnographically recorded and scored by professionals blind to the study design. Only seven out of 16 participants had REM sleep; participants without REM sleep had a significantly slower decline of both SCR and neural activity of the laterodorsal tegmentum in response to electrical shocks during conditioning. At recall of fear extinction, participants with preceding REM sleep had a reduced SCR and stronger activation of the left ventromedial prefrontal cortex and bilateral lingual gyrus in response to the extinguished stimulus than participants lacking REM sleep. This study indicates that trait-like differences in shock reactivity/habituation (mediated by the brainstem) are predictive of REM sleep disruption, which in turn is associated with impaired consolidation of extinction (mediated by the ventromedial prefrontal cortex). These findings help understand the neurobiological basis and the temporal sequence of the relationship between shock exposure, disturbed sleep and impaired consolidation of extinction, as observed in PTSD.

The brain vascular system has an autoregulatory mechanism that maintains blood perfusion within normal limits at the capillary level. Partially due to its clinical importance, it is of interest to better understand the mechanisms involved in vascular regulation. Therefore, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we quantitatively investigated hemodynamic response characteristics of regions supplied by the main cerebral arteries, during two breath holding tests (BHT): after inspiration and after expiration. We used an auto-regressive method capable of estimating four signal parameters: onset delay, full width at half maximum (FWHM), time-to-peak and amplitude. The onset delay was significantly longer for the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) than for middle cerebral artery (MCA) and anterior arteries (ACA). FWHM and time-to-peak were larger in the ACA territory, indicating a slower blood flow in this region. Differences were also observed in the amplitude among the three areas, where MCA and PCA territories showed the smallest and the highest amplitudes, respectively. Moreover, differences were found in amplitude and onset when BHT was performed after inspiration as compared to BHT after expiration. Time-to-peak and FWHM showed no statistical differences between these two challenges. Such results are related to regional anatomical specificities and biochemical mechanisms responsible for vasodilation, such as those related to vascularity and vessel sizes.
