RESUMO

Quantum algorithms offer a dramatic speedup for computational problems in material science and chemistry. However, any near-term realizations of these algorithms will need to be optimized to fit within the finite resources offered by existing noisy hardware. Here, taking advantage of the adjustable coupling of gmon qubits, we demonstrate a continuous two-qubit gate set that can provide a threefold reduction in circuit depth as compared to a standard decomposition. We implement two gate families: an imaginary swap-like (iSWAP-like) gate to attain an arbitrary swap angle, θ, and a controlled-phase gate that generates an arbitrary conditional phase, ϕ. Using one of each of these gates, we can perform an arbitrary two-qubit gate within the excitation-preserving subspace allowing for a complete implementation of the so-called Fermionic simulation (fSim) gate set. We benchmark the fidelity of the iSWAP-like and controlled-phase gate families as well as 525 other fSim gates spread evenly across the entire fSim(θ,ϕ) parameter space, achieving a purity-limited average two-qubit Pauli error of 3.8×10^{-3} per fSim gate.

RESUMO

We demonstrate an electrically tunable polarizer for terahertz (THz) frequency electromagnetic waves formed from a hybrid graphene-metal metasurface. Broadband (>3 THz) polarization-dependent modulation of THz transmission is demonstrated as a function of the graphene conductivity for various wire grid geometries, each tuned by gating using an overlaid ion gel. We show a strong enhancement of modulation (up to ∼17 times) compared to graphene wire grids in the frequency range of 0.2-2.5 THz upon introduction of the metallic elements. Theoretical calculations, considering both plasmonic coupling and Drude absorption, are in good agreement with our experimental findings.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a significant enhancement in the sensitivity of split ring resonator terahertz metamaterial dielectric sensors by the introduction of etched trenches into their inductive-capacitive gap area, both through finite element simulations and in experiments performed using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The enhanced sensitivity is demonstrated by observation of an increased frequency shift in response to overlaid dielectric material of thicknesses up to 18 µm deposited on to the sensor surface. We show that sensitivity to the dielectric is enhanced by a factor of up to ∼2.7 times by the incorporation of locally etched trenches with a depth of ∼3.4 µm, for example, and discuss the effect of the etching on the electrical properties of the sensors. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with simulations of the sensors obtained using finite element methods.

RESUMO

We report the first detection of gravitational lensing due to galaxy clusters using only the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The lensing signal is obtained using a new estimator that extracts the lensing dipole signature from stacked images formed by rotating the cluster-centered Stokes QU map cutouts along the direction of the locally measured background CMB polarization gradient. Using data from the SPTpol 500 deg^{2} survey at the locations of roughly 18 000 clusters with richness λ≥10 from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year-3 full galaxy cluster catalog, we detect lensing at 4.8σ. The mean stacked mass of the selected sample is found to be (1.43±0.40)×10^{14}M_{⊙} which is in good agreement with optical weak lensing based estimates using DES data and CMB-lensing based estimates using SPTpol temperature data. This measurement is a key first step for cluster cosmology with future low-noise CMB surveys, like CMB-S4, for which CMB polarization will be the primary channel for cluster lensing measurements.

RESUMO

The combination of multiple observational probes has long been advocated as a powerful technique to constrain cosmological parameters, in particular dark energy. The Dark Energy Survey has measured 207 spectroscopically confirmed type Ia supernova light curves, the baryon acoustic oscillation feature, weak gravitational lensing, and galaxy clustering. Here we present combined results from these probes, deriving constraints on the equation of state, w, of dark energy and its energy density in the Universe. Independently of other experiments, such as those that measure the cosmic microwave background, the probes from this single photometric survey rule out a Universe with no dark energy, finding w=-0.80_{-0.11}^{+0.09}. The geometry is shown to be consistent with a spatially flat Universe, and we obtain a constraint on the baryon density of Ω_{b}=0.069_{-0.012}^{+0.009} that is independent of early Universe measurements. These results demonstrate the potential power of large multiprobe photometric surveys and pave the way for order of magnitude advances in our constraints on properties of dark energy and cosmology over the next decade.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the activity levels of hospitalised older people and the intra-daily activity patterns in this group have not been described. AIMS: To describe the quantity and daily pattern of physical activity among hospitalised older people using two accelerometers: the ankle-worn StepWatch Activity Monitor (SAM), and the wrist-worn GENEActiv. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted on the acute medical wards for older people in one UK hospital. INCLUSION CRITERIA: participants aged ≥ 70 years, and able to mobilise prior to admission. Participants wore both devices for up to seven consecutive days, or until hospital discharge, whichever was sooner. Intra-daily activity levels were analysed hourly over each 24 h period. RESULTS: 38 participants (mean age 87.8 years, SD 4.8) had their activity levels measured using both devices. The SAM median daily step count was 600 (IQR 240-1427). Intra-daily activity analysis showed two peak periods of ambulatory activity between 9 am-11 am and 6 pm-7 pm. With physical activity defined as ≥ 12 milli-g (GENEActiv), the median time spent above this cut-off point was 4.2 h. 62% of this activity time was only sustained for 1-5 min. Acceptability of both devices was high overall, but the wrist-worn device (96%) was more acceptable to patients than the ankle-worn device (83%). CONCLUSION: Activity levels of these hospitalised older people were very low. Most physical activity was sustained over short periods. The intra-daily pattern of activity is an interesting finding which can help clinicians implement time-specific interventions to address the important issue of sedentary behaviour.

RESUMO

We present a mass map reconstructed from weak gravitational lensing shear measurements over 139 deg2 from the Dark Energy Survey science verification data. The mass map probes both luminous and dark matter, thus providing a tool for studying cosmology. We find good agreement between the mass map and the distribution of massive galaxy clusters identified using a red-sequence cluster finder. Potential candidates for superclusters and voids are identified using these maps. We measure the cross-correlation between the mass map and a magnitude-limited foreground galaxy sample and find a detection at the 6.8σ level with 20 arc min smoothing. These measurements are consistent with simulated galaxy catalogs based on N-body simulations from a cold dark matter model with a cosmological constant. This suggests low systematics uncertainties in the map. We summarize our key findings in this Letter; the detailed methodology and tests for systematics are presented in a companion paper.

RESUMO

The practice of anaesthesia was revolutionised by the ideas of Archie Brain. The routine use of a facemask to manage the airway was not a hands-free technique, despite the development of various harnesses, and made adequate record-keeping difficult. The tracheal tube was associated with some morbidity, which some felt was unsuitable for day surgery. Brain developed an airway management device that was less stressful to the patient than tracheal intubation, and was, however, as safe as using a facemask and airway. Brain also hoped his device would function for cases where mask ventilation was particularly difficult and thus give anaesthetists a safer alternative to a complex intubation, especially in emergency scenarios.

RESUMO

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are the most commonly isolated bacteria from goat milk, but they have often been identified with phenotypic methods, which may have resulted in misclassification. The aims of this paper were to assess the amount of misclassification of a phenotypic test for identifying CNS species from goat milk compared with transfer RNA intergenic spacer PCR (tDNA-PCR) followed by capillary electrophoresis, and to apply the tDNA-PCR technique on different capillary electrophoresis equipment. Milk samples were collected from 416 does in 5 Californian dairy goat herds on 3 occasions during lactation. In total, 219 CNS isolates were identified at the species level with tDNA-PCR and subjected to the API 20 Staph identification test kit (API Staph; bioMérieux, Durham, NC). If the same species was isolated multiple times from the same udder gland, only the first isolate was used for further analyses, resulting in 115 unique CNS isolates. According to the tDNA-PCR test, the most prevalent CNS species were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus caprae, and Staphylococcus simulans. Typeability with API staph was low (72%). Although the API Staph test was capable of identifying the majority of Staph. epidermidis and Staph. caprae isolates, sensitivity for identification of Staph. simulans was low. The true positive fraction was high for the 3 most prevalent species. It was concluded that the overall performance of API Staph in differentiating CNS species from goat milk was moderate to low, mainly because of the low typeability, and that genotypic methods such as tDNA-PCR are preferred.

RESUMO

A 31-year-old G5P1 patient with unremarkable past medical history at 29 weeks of gestation was diagnosed with a gigantic left frontotemporal brain mass. Initial clinical management as an inpatient achieved an improvement in the symptoms. The patient and surgical team agreed to schedule a cesarean delivery at 32 weeks of gestation if no neurological deterioration was observed. Intraoperative course with general endotracheal anesthesia and bilateral transversus abdominis plane block was uneventful and promoted efficient postoperative pain control. Seven days after delivery, the patient underwent craniotomy for brain tumor resection. This report describes the anesthetic management of a patient with an intracranial tumor during pregnancy.

RESUMO

A method has been developed for aligning segments of several sequences at once. The number of search steps depends only polynomially on the number of sequences, instead of exponentially, because most alignments are rejected without being evaluated explicitly. A data structure herein called the "heap" facilitates this process. For a set of n sequence segments, the overall similarity is taken to be the sum of all the constituent segment pair similarities, which are in turn sums of corresponding residue similarity scores from a Table. The statistical models that test alignments for significance make it possible to group sequences objectively, even when most or all of the interrelationships are weak. These tests are very sensitive, while remaining quite conservative, and discourage the addition of "misfit" sequences to an existing set. The new techniques are applied to a set of five DNA-binding proteins, to a group of three enzymes that employ the coenzyme FAD, and to a control set. The alignment previously proposed for the DNA-binding proteins on the basis of structural comparisons and inspection of sequences is supported quite dramatically, and a highly significant alignment is found for the FAD-binding proteins.

RESUMO

Molecular surfaces are fitted to each other by a new solution to the problem of docking a ligand into the active site of a protein molecule. The procedure constructs patterns of points on the surfaces and superimposes them upon each other using a least-squares best-fit algorithm. This brings the surfaces into contact and provides a direct measure of their local complementarity. The search over the ligand surface produces a large number of dockings, of which a small fraction having the best complementarity and the least steric hindrance are evaluated for electrostatic interaction energy. When applied to molecules taken from crystallographically observed complexes, this procedure consistently assigns the lowest electrostatic energies to correct dockings. On independently determined structures, the ability of the method to discern correct dockings depends on how much conformational difference there is between the free and complexed forms of the molecules. The procedure is found to be fast enough on contemporary workstation computers to permit many conformations to be considered, and tolerant enough to make rather coarse bond dihedral sampling a practicable way to overcome the problem of structural flexibility.

RESUMO

Vascular luminal castings of rabbit eyes were microdissected and studied with scanning electron microscopy to elucidate the three-dimensional angioarchitecture of the optic nerve head. Using sequential microdissection, an incomplete arterial circle was identified as terminal branches of two to three short posterior ciliary arteries around the optic nerve head. Several recurrent branches from the arterial circle form a pial arterial network. This pial system supplies the optic nerve head microvasculature and receives numerous venules from them. The only large vessel to enter the optic nerve is a central retinal artery that has few branches within the optic nerve and provides several branches at the surface of the optic disc. Moderately numerous vessels connect the retinal and ciliary vascular layers within the optic nerve head. Few arterioles to the optic nerve head arise from the choroid; however, there are a small number of capillary and numerous venous connections between them. These results indicate that the principal blood supply of the rabbit optic nerve head is derived from the short posterior ciliary arteries by the arterial circle. The retinal arteries contribute to the surface vasculature of the optic nerve head. The pial system also plays a significant role in both supply and drainage of the rabbit optic nerve head.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate blood flow reduction and topographic optic nerve changes after the local administration of endothelin-1 in vivo, delivered to the perineural region of the anterior optic nerve in the rabbit. METHODS: Endothelin-1 (five rabbits) in a dosage of 0.1 microgram/day or balanced salt solution (two rabbits) was delivered to the perineural region of the anterior optic nerve with osmotically driven minipumps. Optic nerve blood flow was determined by the colored microspheres technique after 14 days of local endothelin-1 or balanced salt solution administration to the microvasculature of the optic nerve. In addition, optic nerve blood flow was determined in two rabbits that had no minipump implants. The morphologic changes induced by reduction of blood flow were assessed in five additional rabbits implanted with osmotically driven minipumps containing endothelin-1 (0.1 microgram/day). These rabbits were observed for 8 weeks, and the morphologic optic nerve changes were monitored with a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope. RESULTS: Independent of intraocular pressure, endothelin-1 induced a decrease in blood flow of approximately 38% in the experimental eye, compared to the decrease induced by balanced salt solution or to the decrease in rabbits without minipumps (analysis of covariance, P = 0.0092). Multivariate statistical analysis showed a significant change in topometric parameters (cup area, cup depth, rim volume) obtained with a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope, indicating an increase in optic nerve cupping and a decrease of the perineural rim volume in the experimental eyes (P = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: The current results suggest that morphologic optic nerve alterations can be induced experimentally in the rabbit model after ischemia produced by the local administration of endothelin-1 to the perineural region of the anterior optic nerve.

RESUMO

A general scheme to perform universal, fault-tolerant quantum computation within decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) is presented. At most two-qubit interactions are required, and the system remains within the DFS throughout the entire implementation of a quantum gate. We show explicitly how to perform universal computation on clusters of the four-qubit DFS encoding one logical qubit each under spatially symmetric (collective) decoherence. Our results have immediate relevance to quantum computer implementations in which quantum logic is implemented through exchange interactions, such as the recently proposed spin-spin coupled quantum dot arrays and donor-atom arrays.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine in a two-part study whether misalignment between the patient and the laser scanner is a major source of variability with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (Heidelberg [Germany] Engineering). METHODS: Three topographic images of the right optic nerve were acquired with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph in eight patients with glaucoma. The correlations between average cup volume, variability of cup volume estimates, and direction of imaging were evaluated. Furthermore, the correlations between average rim volume, variability of rim volume estimates, and direction of imaging were evaluated. Next, the optic nerve cup volume and rim volume estimates of a rabbit's left eye were compared between three series of five topographic images acquired from three slightly different directions. RESULTS: Average cup volume, variability of cup volume estimates, and variability in the direction of imaging correlated significantly among the patients with glaucoma (multiple R2 = .95; P < .001). Average rim volume, variability of rim volume estimates, variability in the direction of imaging, and variability in the mean height of the contour line also correlated significantly (multiple R2 = .88; P = .03). In the rabbit eye, the cup volume and the rim volume differed significantly among the three image series (analysis of variance, P < .001 and P = .04, respectively). CONCLUSION: Misalignment between the patient and the laser scanner may account for significant variability with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph.

RESUMO

The relationships among mitochondrial O2 availability, O2 delivery, and lactate formation in exercising skeletal muscle remain unclear. Some data suggest that muscle O2 provision is sufficient at maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) to challenge the concept of a mitochondrial O2 limitation at VO2max. The relationships among VO2, mitochondrial O2 availability, and net lactate production were studied over a wide range of exercise intensities. Using near-infrared spectroscopy, the oxidation-reduction state of cytochrome a,a3 was monitored in the canine gracilis in vivo. Twenty adult dogs were anesthetized with alpha-chloralose, intubated, and mechanically ventilated on room air. Five-minute stimulation periods at rates of 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, or 12 stimuli/s were performed. VO2max generally was achieved at a stimulation rate of 8 stimuli/s; mean VO2max was 0.12 +/- 0.09 (SE) ml.min-1 x g-1. The concentration of oxidized mitochondrial cytochrome a,a3 decreased at all work loads relative to resting state and demonstrated a near-linear relationship with muscle VO2 (r2 = 0.99). Muscle lactate efflux and the lactate-pyruvate ratio also were correlated positively with cytochrome a,a3 reduction, suggesting a common regulatory mechanism coupling the processes of aerobic glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation. At VO2max, the corresponding cytochrome oxidation was not significantly different from that observed at death. Thus, in the gracilis maximal exercise leads to near-complete reduction of cytochrome a,a3 secondary to deficient O2 provision. We conclude that VO2max is limited primarily by O2 delivery to this muscle and not by other factors limiting mitochondrial ATP production or substrate oxidation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiac revascularization on a beating heart avoids the side effects of cardiopulmonary bypass (eg, neurologic injury, hemodilution, and coagulopathy). We examined perioperative bleeding and use of blood products during coronary artery bypass grafting using either on-pump or off-pump techniques. METHOD: The charts of 126 patients who had coronary artery bypass grafting were reviewed. Data from 66 patients revascularized off pump and 60 patients with cardiopulmonary bypass (on pump) were analyzed using unpaired Student's t test. RESULTS: Average age was 62.5 years in either group. More patients received heparin preoperatively in the off-pump group that resulted in mild elevation of preoperative partial thromboplastin time and activated clotting time (40.4 +/- 2.9 seconds and 150.1 +/- 5.3 seconds, respectively). However, the off-pump group had less perioperative (intraoperative or postoperative) bleeding (2312 +/- 212 mL versus 3251 +/- 155 mL, p < 0.05) and required fewer blood products compared with the on-pump group. Hemoglobin and platelets decreased more in the conventional on-pump group. CONCLUSIONS: Avoiding cardiopulmonary bypass decreases perioperative bleeding and, consequently, reduces the use of blood products after coronary artery bypass grafting, which might result in fewer transfusion-related complications.

RESUMO

Rabbits underwent the single-dose or long-term therapeutic administration of the adrenergic drugs phenylephrine hydrochloride, timolol maleate, and betaxolol hydrochloride. After a single dose, all three drugs caused substantial, localized constriction in the arterioles that supply the ciliary processes but did not affect the downstream bore of the same vessels. After seven weeks of a daily dose, tolerance reduced the response to betaxolol to insignificant levels and that to phenylephrine substantially, whereas timolol maleate continued to produce identical levels of vasoconstriction to those seen with single-dose administration. In addition to the consequent lowering of perfusion of the ciliary processes and presumptive impact on aqueous humor production, vasoconstriction also reinforces concerns about impaired vascular perfusion of eyes undergoing long-term ocular therapy.
