RESUMO

Three benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) core-based molecular systems appended with phenylazo-3,5-dimethylisoxazole photoswitches at the peripheral position through variable-length alkoxy chains have been designed and synthesized. The supramolecular interactions of the mesogens provided discotic nematic liquid crystalline assembly as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. Spectroscopic studies confirmed the reversible photoswitching and excellent thermal stability of the photoswitched states in solution phase and thin film. Also, atomic force microscopic (AFM) and POM investigations demonstrated the morphological changes in the self-assembly induced by the photoirradiation as monitored by the changes in the height profiles and optical appearance of the textures, respectively. Remarkably, the liquid crystalline discotic molecules showed reversible "on and off states" controlled by light at ambient temperature.

RESUMO

Two tripodal C3 -symmetric photoswitchable molecular systems T1 and T2 are reported that have extended conjugation at external and internal positions using an acryl group. The influence of the extended π-bonds in their absorption properties, thermal relaxation of the photoisomers and their propensities in forming supramolecular self-assemblies have been explored through spectroscopy, and microscopic studies. In particular, the investigations on the self-assembly have been carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), polarized optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction studies (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Remarkably, the position of the acryl group influences the behaviour of the two target molecules in supramolecular assembly, and also in the formation of photoresponsive organic hydrogels or microcrystals.

RESUMO

Development of materials that serve as efficient blue emitters in solution-processable OLEDs is challenging. In this study, we report three derivatives of C3-symmetric 1,3,5-tris(thien-2-yl)benzene-based highly luminescent room temperature columnar discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) suitable as solid-state emitters in OLED devices. When employed in solution-processed OLEDs, one of the derivatives having the highest photoluminescence quantum yield exhibited a maximum EQE of 4.7% and CIE chromaticity of (0.16, 0.05) corresponding to the ultra deep-blue emission. The finding is sufficiently significant in the field of DLC-based deep blue emitters.

RESUMO

Heterocoronene, a new redox-active core fragment, is utilized for the synthesis of room-temperature columnar discotic liquid crystals (DLCs). Three wedge-shaped side chains having different lengths of alkyl tails are introduced at the periphery of the heterocoronene core to prepare three kinds of discotic molecules, 1 (R = C10H21), 2 (R = C12H25), and 3 (R = C14H29). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the packing variation in the columnar lattices regulated by alkyl chains of discrete length and steric bulk. When used in space charge limited current devices, compound 1 exhibits a high hole mobility value of 8.84 cm2/V s at ambient temperature, whereas compounds 2 and 3 show efficient ambipolar charge transport behavior with maximum hole (µh) and electron (µe) mobilities of 0.70 and 3.59 cm2/V s, respectively, for compound 3. The mobility values (µh = 8.84 cm2/V s for 1 and µe = 3.59 cm2/V s for 3) are remarkable and the highest ever disclosed for any DLC-based organic semiconductor, promising to deliver a good balance between mobility and processability in devices. The grazing incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments are employed to quantify the extent of alignment in the film state, which correlates with the observed trend of mobility values.

RESUMO

Liquid crystals (LCs) with photoswitchable groups are very interesting owing to their dual applications. In this regard, we report the synthesis of long chain alkoxy azobenzene incorporated benzenetricarboxamides 7a-c based room temperature columnar LCs. Apart from the light induced isomerization in the solution phase, the salient feature of these systems is the reversible photoisomerization even in the bulk state with perpetual columnar self-assembly at room temperature. Based on the observation of mesomorphic textures under polarised optical microscopy (POM) and grazing incidence small/wide angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS/GIWAXS) studies, the columnar assembly was found to be stable upon photoisomerization. However, subtle changes in height profile have been observed in AFM measurements after photoswitching. Interestingly, a temperature dependent change between rectangular and hexagonal mesophases in 7a has been observed. Upon extending the alkoxy chain length, only the hexagonal mesophase was observed. For comparison, the corresponding N-methylated derivative of 7a has also been synthesized. Despite the better photoswitching behaviour, due to the lack of planarity and H-bonding, 8a did not show any columnar mesophase.

RESUMO

A new class of hydrogen (H) bonded fluorescent liquid crystals (FLCs) based on a newly discovered s-heptazine fluorophore discotic component have been synthesized. The tendency of the s-heptazine core to form H-bonded LCs has been explored for the first time. Interestingly, the pure heptazine derivatives (non-mesomorphic) on complexation with tri-alkoxy benzoic acids exhibit enantiotropic columnar mesomorphism over a wide range of temperatures including room temperature. This indicates the strength of the resulting H-bonded complexes. The H-bonded supramolecular complexes were studied through FT-IR, temperature dependent FT-IR and NMR studies and H-D exchange studies, and their thermal behaviour was deduced through polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. Because of the inherently fluorescent pure heptazine derivative, the resulting complexes exhibit fluorescent behaviour in the solution state as well as in the solid state.

RESUMO

Three new oligomeric perylene (PE) tetraester derivatives, consisting of a PE-based core with four pentaalkynylbenzene units attached through flexible alkyl spacers, are reported. These derivatives were investigated for their mesomorphic properties and thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical behaviour. Small- (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) studies were performed to deduce the exact nature of the phases. To resolve overlapping reflections and facilitate their indexing, grazing-incidence SAXS/WAXS experiments were carried out on oriented thin films on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrate. The corresponding electron density maps were derived from the intensities observed in the diffraction pattern. Whereas compounds with shorter alkyl spacers (n=6 and 8) were found to self-organise into soft crystalline columnar assemblies, those with longer spacers (n=10) exhibited a liquid-crystalline columnar nematic mesophase. This is in contrast to previous reports that describe highly symmetric 2D hexagonal and rectangular columnar structures of PE-based mesogens. The morphology of self-assembly was found to transform from soft crystal columnar to nematic columnar phase through simple variation in the number of alkyl spacers. All compounds exhibited excellent fluorescence emission properties with a very good quantum yield and large band gap. Apart from high solubility and good quantum yield, these compounds can serve as standards to measure quantum yields of unknown samples. These compounds also display green luminescence and may find applications for various optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Herein, room-temperature discotic liquid crystals based on heptazine, an electron deficient central core, are reported for the first time. Mesomorphic behaviors of the materials are also investigated. Supramolecular assembly of the mesophase derivatives were confirmed by X-ray scattering experiments. Heptazine-based solid thin films are strong blue light emitters, whereas in the solution state, they are weakly emissive or non-emissive. The band gap energy is found to be low in this class of compounds. Formation of room-temperature mesophases, low band-gap behavior, and strong blue-light emission in the solid state are promising attributes for optoelectronic applications of the materials.

RESUMO

Five novel columnar liquid crystalline compounds (4.1-4.5) consisting of a central anthraquinone core carrying four alkoxy chains (R = n-C6H13, n-C8H17, n-C10H21, n-C12H25, and 3,7-dimethyl octyl) with two diagonally opposite 1-ethynyl-4-pentylbenzene units were synthesized, and their phase transitions were investigated between changes in the molecular structure and their self-assembly into the columnar mesophases. Small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) studies were performed to deduce the exact nature of the mesophases, and their corresponding electron density maps were derived from the intensities of the peaks observed in the diffraction patterns. A comparison of compounds with different alkoxy chains indicated that the soft crystal columnar rectangular (Crcolrec) phase was stable at lower temperature for the shortest peripheral alkoxy chain (4.1; R = n-C6H13) and was found to exhibit the columnar hexagonal (Colh) phase and then the discotic nematic (ND) phase with increasing temperature. In contrast, increasing the peripheral chain length to n-C8H17 or the branched one (4.2 and 4.5) stabilized the Colh phase at lower temperature and showed the ND phase at higher temperature. Further increase in chain length (4.3 and 4.4; n-C10H21, n-C12H25) demonstrated the formation of the ND phase. Conductivity measurement in the Colh mesophase was found to be almost 10 times higher in magnitude than the corresponding Crcolrec phase. The HOMO-LUMO band gap of all the compounds was found to be in the range from 2.79 to 2.82 eV, which is quite less and comparable with the optical energy band gap.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is one of the most distressing complications following surgery. Supplemental perioperative fluid therapy might be an effective strategy to reduce PONV in children. OBJECTIVES: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of intraoperative liberal fluid therapy with crystalloids on PONV in children. METHODS: In this randomized trial, a total of 150 children of 3-7 years undergoing lower abdominal and penile surgery under general anesthesia were randomly assigned into two groups. "Restricted group" received 10 mL kg-1 h-1 and "Liberal group" received 30 mL kg-1 h-1 infusion of Ringer's lactate solution intraoperatively. All patients received a caudal block and intravenous paracetamol for analgesia. No opioids and muscle relaxants were used. All episodes of nausea-vomiting and the requirement of rescue antiemetic were assessed during 24 hours postoperatively. RESULTS: The incidence of PONV was significantly less in the liberal group patients as compared to the restricted group; 33 (45.8%) patients in the restricted group had vomiting as compared to 20 (27.4%) patients in the liberal group (RR 0.59, 95% CI: 0.38-0.93, P=.021). The adjusted odds ratio of PONV for the liberal group vs restricted group was 2.24 (95% CI: 1.12-4.48, P=.022). The incidence of fluid intake during the first 6 postoperative hours was significantly higher in the restricted group patients; 60 (83%) children in the restricted group complained of thirst as compared to 12 (17%) children in the liberal group (RR 0.19, 95% CI: 0.18-0.33, P=.0001). The parents of the liberal group were more satisfied as compared to the restricted group (mean difference -0.9, 95% CI: -1.8, -0.1, P=.04). None of the children had any complication attributed to the liberal fluid therapy. CONCLUSION: Liberal intraoperative fluid therapy was found to be effective in reducing PONV in children undergoing lower abdominal surgery.

RESUMO

Use of 0.9% sodium chloride for total gut irrigation (TGI) through nasogastric route is an effective method of bowel preparation in children undergoing colorectal surgeries. TGI with normal saline (NS) can result in nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, and mild electrolyte imbalance; however, hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis has not been documented. We report two cases of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis in children posted for colorectal surgery following TGI with NS who were successfully managed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A previous study by our group demonstrated an increase in oropharyngeal leak pressures and a deterioration of ventilation in maximum neck flexion with the I-Gel™ . To ascertain the optimal degree of neck flexion which increases OPLP without compromising ventilation we conducted a prospective self-controlled trial with the I-Gel™ in different degrees of neck flexion in anesthetized paralyzed children. METHODOLOGY: The I-gel™ was inserted in 60 children undergoing inhalation induction with muscle paralysis for routine general anesthesia. Recordings of peak inspiratory pressures (PIP) at flexion of 15°, 30°, and 45° were taken as the primary outcome. Expired tidal volume, ventilation scoring, fiberoptic gradings, and OPLP in different degrees of flexion were recorded as secondary outcomes. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in mean PIP in cm H2 O at flexion 30° [13.3 (95% CI 12.8-13.8) cm H2 O, P < 0.001] and 45° flexion (16.5 [15.9-17.1] cm H2 O, P < 0.001) compared to neutral. A decrease in the expired tidal volume was seen at flexion of 30° (7.6 [7.3-7.8] cm H2 O, P = 0.00) and 45° (7.6 [7.3-7.8] cm H2 O, P = 0.00). There was deterioration of ventilation score, mean [range] at 30° flexion 2[0-3], and 45° flexion 1[0-3] compared to the neutral 3[2-3]. There was a significant increase in OPLP with an increase in degree of flexion. CONCLUSION: We conclude that 15° neck flexion can safely be applied without compromising ventilation with the I-Gel™ in anesthetized paralyzed children. However, Flexion of 30° or more warrants caution or the use of alternative devices like an endotracheal tube due to increase in PIP and worsening of ventilation score.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Palonosetron 75 mcg is being used for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. However, weight-adjusted doses in laparoscopic surgery are unevaluated. AIM: To determine the response to three doses of palonosetron (0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 mcg kg⁻¹) over 72 h in the postoperative period in women undergoing laparoscopic gynaecological procedures. DESIGN: A randomised dose-response study. SETTING: A tertiary care hospital and research institute in north India from July to December 2014. PATIENTS: American society of Anesthesiologists physical status I and II women, from 18 to 60 years old, undergoing laparoscopic gynaecological procedures on a day care basis. METHODS: Patients were randomised to receive palonosetron 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mcg kg⁻¹ intravenously before induction of anaesthesia. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with a complete response (i.e. who neither vomited nor required additional antiemetic drugs for nausea during the first 72 postoperative hours). The proportion of patients having nausea or emetic episodes and the requirement for rescue antiemetics and analgesics during the 72-h period were recorded as secondary outcomes. RESULTS: With palonosetron, there was a significant dose-dependent increase (37.5 vs. 67.5 vs. 75%, P < 0.001) in proportion of patients with a complete response during the 72 h. This was associated with a significant dose-dependent decrease in the proportion of patients with nausea (77.5 vs. 47.5 vs. 35%, P < 0.001) and vomiting (47.5 vs. 32.5 vs. 12.5%, P = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Following laparoscopic gynaecological surgery, intravenous palonosetron has a dose-dependent prophylactic effect against postoperative nausea and vomiting during the first 72 postoperative hours. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial was registered with Clinical trial registry of India(CTRI/2014/09/004987).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Videolaryngoscopes are increasingly being used in potentially difficult airway. McCoy laryngoscope provides definitive advantage over conventional laryngoscopes in cervical spine patients. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of the CMAC(®) videolaryngoscope with the McCoy Laryngoscope in patients with a cervical collar. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sample size of at least 22 patients in each group was calculated using Intubation Difficulty Scale (IDS) score as the primary outcome. 60 American Society of Anesthesiologists I and II patients requiring tracheal intubation for elective surgery were randomly allocated into the McCoy group (n = 30) and the CMAC(®) videolaryngoscope group (n = 30). Anesthesia was induced with fentanyl 2 mcg/kg, propofol 2-3 mg/kg and rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg. A rigid collar was applied to immobilize the cervical spine. Comparative data on the IDS scale, Cormack-Lehane (CL) laryngoscopic view, time taken for glottis visualization, time taken to pass endotracheal tube, total time to intubate, number of optimizing maneuvers and hemodynamic variables were recorded in the two groups. RESULTS: IDS score was significantly less in the CMAC(®) group compared to the McCoy group (median [interquartile range (IQR)], 1 [0-1] vs. 4 [3-6], P < 0.05). CMAC(®) videolaryngoscope required significantly less time for glottic visualization with median (IQR), 5 (5-7) versus 14 (8-15), P = 0.000 in McCoy laryngoscope, 29 (96.7%) patients in the CMAC(®) group had Modified CL Grade I compared with 16 (53.3%) patients in McCoy group. The hemodynamic variables, number of optimizing maneuvers and incidence of side effects were comparable in the two groups. CONCLUSION: CMAC(®) videolaryngoscope forms an effective tool for the airway management of cervical spine patients with a cervical collar.

RESUMO

Yellow Mosaic Virus (YMV) is a serious disease of soybean. Resistance to YMV was mapped in 180 soybean genotypes through association mapping approach using 121 simple sequence repeats (SSR) and four resistance gene analogue (RGA)-based markers. The association mapping population (AMP) (96 genotypes) and confirmation population (CP) (84 genotypes) was tested for resistance to YMV at hot-spot consecutively for 3 years (2007-2009). The genotypes exhibited significant variability for YMV resistance (P < 0.01). Molecular genotyping and population structure analysis with 'admixture' co-ancestry model detected seven optimal sub-populations in the AMP. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) between the markers extended up to 35 and 10 cM with r2 > 0.15, and >0.25, respectively. The 4 RGA-based markers showed no association with YMV resistance. Two SSR markers, Satt301 and GMHSP179 on chromosome 17 were found to be in significant LD with YMV resistance. Contingency Chi-square test confirmed the association (P < 0.01) and the utility of the markers was validated in the CP. It would pave the way for marker assisted selection for YMV resistance in soybean. This is the first report of its kind in soybean.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to assess the effects of dexmedetomidine on the onset and duration of block and postoperative analgesia during supraclavicular brachial plexus block in patients undergoing upper limb surgeries. METHODS: Sixty adult patients undergoing upper limb and hand surgeries were randomly allocated into 2 groups. The control group received equal volumes of 0.75% ropivacaine and 2% lidocaine with adrenaline, whereas the dexmedetomidine (dexmed) group received 1 µg/kg dexmedetomidine along with equal volumes of 0.75% ropivacaine and 2% lidocaine with adrenaline. A total volume of 0.5 mL/kg was administered in ultrasound-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block in both groups. Patients were observed for hemodynamic stability, onset and duration of sensory and motor blockade, duration of analgesia, postoperative pain, and adverse effects. RESULTS: The onset time of motor blockade was shortened and the duration of sensory, as well as motor, block was significantly prolonged in the dexmed group (P < 0.0001). The duration of postoperative analgesia was also longer in the dexmed group compared with the control group (median [interquartile range], 12 [10.5-13.5] hours and 17 [10.5-19.5] hours in control and dexmed group, respectively [95% confidence interval, -5 {-5, -4}, P < 0.0001]). The requirement for rescue analgesic during the 24-hour postoperative period was less in the dexmed group (P < 0.0001). Postoperative pain scores were comparable among groups except at 8 and 10 hours, when pain scores were lower in the dexmed group. Patients receiving dexmedetomidine were more sedated for 2 hours than the control group patients (P < 0.0001). No episode of bradycardia, hypotension, respiratory depression, or dizziness was reported. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the addition of dexmedetomidine to ropivacaine-lidocaine prolonged the duration of supraclavicular brachial plexus block and improved postoperative analgesia without significant adverse effects in patients undergoing upper limb surgeries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies that have compared and quantified the oropharyngeal leak pressure (OPLP) and adequacy of ventilation with supraglottic airway devices in different head and neck positions have been done in adult populations. The effects of head-neck position changes on the functioning of I-gel(™) in pediatric population still remain unevaluated. AIM: This study aimed to quantify the influence of different head and neck positions namely neutral, maximum flexion, and maximum extension on OPLP, ventilation scoring, and fiberoptic grading using I-gel(™) in anesthetized, paralyzed children. METHODS: I-gel(™) was inserted in 30 paralyzed, anesthetized children scheduled for elective urological and orthopedic procedures. Anesthesia was induced with sevoflurane in oxygen. Atracurium was administered intravenously to facilitate neuromuscular relaxation. Recordings of OPLP in neutral, maximum flexion, and maximum extension were taken as primary outcome. Fiberoptic grading, insertion of ryle's tube and ventilation scoring were also measured in different head and neck positions as secondary outcomes. RESULTS: The OPLP was significantly higher in flexion (27.6 ± 3.3 cm H2 O, P = 0.000) and lower in extension (19.6 ± 3.2 cm H2 O, P = 0.006) in comparison to the neutral position (23.2 ± 3.2 cm H2 O). There was a worsening of the fiberoptic view in flexion compared to neutral position (0/5/19/6 vs 5/21/4/0). The ventilation score was poorer (1 [0-3], P < 0.05) and peak inspiratory pressures higher in flexion (15.2 ± 1.4 cm H2 O, P = 0.000) compared to the neutral position (10.4 ± 1.6 cm H2 O). CONCLUSION: Caution is warranted in pediatric patients while ventilating with I-gel(™) in extreme flexion of head and neck owing to poor ventilation despite increase in OPLP.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This randomized double-blind study was conducted to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and safety of addition of three different doses of dexmedetomidine in caudal ropivacaine compared with plain ropivacaine for postoperative analgesia in pediatric day care patients. METHODS: Eighty children of American Society of Anesthesiologists grade I-II, aged 1-8 years, undergoing lower abdominal and perineal surgery were included. Children were randomly allocated into four groups. Group 1 received 0.2% plain ropivacaine 0.75 ml·kg(-1), while group 2, 3, and 4 received dexmedetomidine 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 µg·kg(-1), respectively, along with 0.2% ropivacaine 0.75 ml·kg(-1). Anesthesia was induced and maintained with sevoflurane and 50% N2O in oxygen. Children were observed for postoperative pain, nausea-vomiting, agitation, sedation, and adverse effects. Rescue analgesia was provided with oral paracetamol. RESULTS: Postoperative analgesia was significantly prolonged in all dexmedetomidine groups as compared to plain ropivacaine group (P < 0.001). All patients in the plain ropivacaine group required rescue analgesia within first 6 postoperative hours, while none in the other three groups. None of the patients showed delayed anesthetic emergence. Four patients in the plain ropivacaine group developed agitation, while none in the dexmedetomidine groups. Patients receiving dexmedetomidine 1.5 µg·kg(-1) were more sedated as compared to the other groups (P < 0.01), but it did not delay discharge of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: All three doses of caudal dexmedetomidine appear to be effective for preventing postoperative pain in pediatric day care patients. Caudal dexmedetomidine used in these doses seems to be safe for day care surgery.

RESUMO

Aim and Objective: This study was intended for a possible relationship that might exist between exercise addiction and unbending commitment among female amateur runners. Exercise addiction (EA) can be characterized as an obsession with physical activity. Materials and Methods: The "purposive sampling method" was utilized to collect data. The inventories taken for this purpose were "The Exercise Addiction Inventory" and "Commitment Running Scale." The questionnaire was filled out by 100 participants aged between 18 and 50 years from the capital of India and its border area (Delhi and NCR). Results and Conclusion: It was found that 39% of female long-distance runners were exercise addicts, and 72% were highly committed to running, supporting a probable reason for EA.
