RESUMO

A case is presented in which inadvertent needling of the nucleus pulposus produced unusual cells in cerebrospinal fluid which caused diagnostic difficulty. The case in documented to alert those involved in the diagnostic cytology of cerebrospinal fluid to yet another source of extraneous cellular material in fluid obtained by lumbar puncture.

RESUMO

Using an inflatable balloon catheter with an abrasive, absorbent surface, cytologic material was collected from the whole esophageal mucosa of 500 patients, none of whom were suspected of having esophageal cancer. Cytology identified malignant cells in 15 patients and dysplastic cells in another 26. All lesions were confirmed histologically by endoscopically directed biopsies. Ten cancers were early-stage lesions. The cytologic findings are reported in detail.

RESUMO

These 2 case reports serve to emphasize two important points concerning carcinoma of the cervix: (i) blood-borne metastases are now frequently encountered in this disease; and (ii) in selected cases surgical excision of a secondary deposit in the lung is the treatment of choice and may even result in cure.
