RESUMO

We measured the nuclear-recoil ionization yield in silicon with a cryogenic phonon-sensitive gram-scale detector. Neutrons from a monoenergetic beam scatter off of the silicon nuclei at angles corresponding to energy depositions from 4 keV down to 100 eV, the lowest energy probed so far. The results show no sign of an ionization production threshold above 100 eV. These results call for further investigation of the ionization yield theory and a comprehensive determination of the detector response function at energies below the keV scale.

RESUMO

We present limits on spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions using a 10.6 g Si athermal phonon detector with a baseline energy resolution of σ_{E}=3.86±0.04(stat)_{-0.00}^{+0.19}(syst) eV. This exclusion analysis sets the most stringent dark matter-nucleon scattering cross-section limits achieved by a cryogenic detector for dark matter particle masses from 93 to 140 MeV/c^{2}, with a raw exposure of 9.9 g d acquired at an above-ground facility. This work illustrates the scientific potential of detectors with athermal phonon sensors with eV-scale energy resolution for future dark matter searches.

RESUMO

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) achieved efficient detection of very small recoil energies in its germanium target, resulting in sensitivity to lightly ionizing particles (LIPs) in a previously unexplored region of charge, mass, and velocity parameter space. We report first direct-detection limits calculated using the optimum interval method on the vertical intensity of cosmogenically produced LIPs with an electric charge smaller than e/(3×10^{5}), as well as the strongest limits for charge ≤e/160, with a minimum vertical intensity of 1.36×10^{-7} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} at charge e/160. These results apply over a wide range of LIP masses (5 MeV/c^{2} to 100 TeV/c^{2}) and cover a wide range of ßγ values (0.1-10^{6}), thus excluding nonrelativistic LIPs with ßγ as small as 0.1 for the first time.

RESUMO

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing health threat, but standard methods for determining antibiotic susceptibility are slow and can delay optimal treatment, which is especially consequential in severe infections such as bacteremia. Novel approaches for rapid susceptibility profiling have emerged that characterize either bacterial response to antibiotics (phenotype) or detect specific resistance genes (genotype). GoPhAST-R is a novel assay, performed directly on positive blood cultures, that integrates rapid transcriptional response profiling with detection of key resistance gene transcripts, thereby providing simultaneous data on both phenotype and genotype. Here, we performed the first clinical pilot of GoPhAST-R on 42 positive blood cultures: 26 growing Escherichia coli, 15 growing Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 1 with both. An aliquot of each positive blood culture was exposed to 9 different antibiotics, lysed, then underwent rapid transcriptional profiling on the NanoString® platform; results were analyzed using an in-house susceptibility classification algorithm. GoPhAST-R achieved 95% overall agreement with standard antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods, with the highest agreement for beta-lactams (98%) and the lowest for fluoroquinolones (88%). Epidemic resistance genes including the extended spectrum beta-lactamase bla CTX-M-15 and the carbapenemase bla KPC were also detected within the population. This study demonstrates the clinical feasibility of using transcriptional response profiling for rapid resistance determination, although further validation with larger and more diverse bacterial populations will be essential in future work. GoPhAST-R represents a promising new approach for rapid and comprehensive antibiotic susceptibility testing in clinical settings.

RESUMO

A hybrid antiresonant reflecting waveguide, type B (ARROW-B) plasmonic waveguide based on the resonant coupling between a guided dielectric mode and surface plasmon polariton wave is proposed. Employing the finite element method, hybrid modes including two bound supermodes are obtained at visible frequencies by varying the environmental refractive index. We investigate the propagation characteristics of hybrid modes, where the significant change of modal power by the symmetric bound mode is observed in plasmonic waveguide coupling suitable for highly sensitive detection of bulk refractive index change. Further, anomalous dispersion is shown by the antisymmetric bound mode which leads to large group velocity dispersion of -3.165×10(4) ps/km nm and, thus, makes this hybrid plasmonic waveguide ideal for observation of soliton generation.

RESUMO

Appendiceal diverticula present as rare clinical finding and are most confused with acute appendicitis. A 65-year-old female was presented to our surgical service after 1 day of right lower quadrant abdominal pain and a computed tomography evaluation, read as a diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Due to the location and quality of pain and intraoperative findings acute appendicitis was our preliminary diagnosis. Follow up with histopathology confirmed acute inflammation of an appendiceal diverticulum. With discordance in original diagnosis from final pathological evaluation, we suggest appendiceal diverticula as an important differential to consider in patients of similar clinical presentation. Surgical treatment with appendectomy and final histological diagnosis are essential in the proper treatment of this rare clinical finding.

RESUMO

This cross sectional record based institutional study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan over ten years (1999-2008) aiming analysis of eclamptic mothers for evaluation of maternal and perinatal outcome with different anticonvulsant medications. Total 5991 pregnant mothers with eclampsia admitted in the inpatient department of the tertiary care teaching hospital were recruited for the study, irrespective of their previous antenatal check up history. Subjects with known seizure disorders were excluded from the study. The subjects were managed according to standard regimens (Menon, Ph-sodium, diazepam & magnesium sulphate) and results were documented in standardised format. Case fatality rate, mean induction delivery time & birth-weight, perinatal mortality rates were recorded. Study reveals that the incidence of eclampsia <20 years was 6.97% and majority (5.41%) came from rural areas. Eclampsia was noted primarily in primigravida (7.43%) and unbooked (6.41%) mothers. Ante partum eclampsia predominated (64%) and incidence of caesarean section was 22.25%.The overall case fatality rate was 6.05% and eclampsia contributed 27.85% of all maternal deaths during the last two years of the study period. The overall incidence of low birth weight baby was 26.96% and perinatal mortality was 30.33% (1411/4651).The incidence of perinatal mortality and low birth weight babies are lower in the last 4 years when compared to earlier studies. Proper socio-demographic assessment of pregnancy with eclampsia, planned delivery, shorter induction delivery interval, good control of convulsion by magnesium sulphate, intensive intranatal monitoring causes less maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.

RESUMO

The basic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model is extended to include effects of progressive social awareness, lockdowns and anthropogenic migration. It is found that social awareness can effectively contain the spread by lowering the basic reproduction rate R 0 . Interestingly, the awareness is found to be more effective in a society which can adopt the awareness faster compared to the one having a slower response. The paper also separates the mortality fraction from the clinically recovered fraction and attempts to model the outcome of lockdowns, in absence and presence of social awareness. It is seen that staggered exits from lockdowns are not only economically beneficial but also helps to curb the infection spread. Moreover, a staggered exit strategy with progressive social awareness is found to be the most efficient intervention. The paper also explores the effects of anthropogenic migration on the dynamics of the epidemic in a two-zone scenario. The calculations yield dissimilar evolution of different fractions in different zones. Such models can be convenient to strategize the division of a large zone into smaller sub-zones for a disproportionate imposition of lockdown, or, an exit from one. Calculations are done with parameters consistent with the SARS-COV-2 pathogen in the Indian context.

RESUMO

Formations of Y and T nano junctions have been observed in boron nitride films deposited on silicon substrates by plasma chemical reaction of diborane (B2H6 diluted in hydrogen) and ammonia (NH3) gases using dual frequency (microwave/radio) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique without any intentional heating of the substrates. It has been observed that these nano junctions form at a critical feed gas ratio of ammonia and diborane. We have investigated the effect of gas feed ratio R (=NH3/B2H6) in the plasma reaction chamber, keeping all other deposition parameters constant, on the morphology of boron nitride films. The deposited films are characterized by SEM, AFM, TEM and Laser Raman. For gas feed ratio, R < 100, octahedron and cubic morphologies have been observed in BN films and on increasing R to >100, size of the crystallites reduces to nanometer level. In some of our BN samples deposited at a critical value of gas ratio (R = 400), uniform Y and T junctions having bamboo like morphologies, in nanometer level, have been observed, which we wish to emphasis here as an interesting and newer observation in boron nitride films deposited by the dual frequency PECVD technique. This change in morphology exhibited by varying gas feed ratio is mainly due to excess nitrogen ions in the plasma.

RESUMO

The present paper studies a minimal prey-predator model in the context of marine plankton interaction together with predation by planktivorous fish. The time lag required for gestation of the predator is incorporated and the resulting delayed model is analyzed for stability and bifurcation phenomena. A stochastic extension of the model is considered by perturbing the growth process of phytoplankton using colored noise process known to be more appropriate for the marine environment. The stochastic models with and without gestation delay are analyzed for stability aspects and a threshold value of gestation delay is obtained; this threshold is then compared with that of the deterministic model.

RESUMO

N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase III (GlcNAc-TIII) is encoded by the Mgat3 gene and catalyzes the addition of the bisecting GlcNAc to the core of N-glycans. Mice lacking GlcNAc-TIII due to the insertion mutation Mgat3tmlPst (termed Mgat3neo), exhibit retarded progression of liver tumors induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN; M. Bhaumik et al, Cancer Res., 58: 2881-2887, 1998). This phenotype seemed to be due to a reduction, in activity or amount, of a circulating glycoprotein(s) that enhances DEN-induced liver tumor progression. Here, we provide new evidence to support this hypothesis. First, we show that mice with a deletion mutation of the Mgat3 gene coding exon (Mgat3tmlJxm, termed Mgat3delta) also exhibit retarded progression of DEN-induced liver tumors. At 7 months there was a significant decrease in liver weight (approximately 27%; P < 0.01), reflecting reduced tumor burden in Mgat3delta/delta mice. In addition, tumors were generally fewer and smaller, and histological changes were less severe in Mgat3delta/delta livers. Therefore, tumor progression is retarded in mice with two different null mutations in the Mgat3 gene. Second, we show that the development of DEN-induced tumors is unaltered by high levels of GlcNAc-TIII in the liver of transgenic mice. The Mgat3 gene coding exon under the control of the major urinary protein (MUP) promoter was used to generate transgenic mice that express GlcNAc-TIII in liver. Following DEN injection and phenobarbitol treatment, however, no significant differences were observed between MUP/Mgat3 transgenic and control mice in either tumor numbers or liver weight. The combined data provide strong evidence that retarded progression of tumors in mice lacking GlcNAc-TIII is due to the absence of the bisecting GlcNAc residue on N-glycans of a circulating glycoprotein(s) from a tissue other than liver.

RESUMO

Two oligonucleotide primers Lsmc1 and Lsmv1 derived from the conserved and the variable region of a major class kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) minicircle (pLURkE3) of Leishmania strain UR6 were used for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in order to amplify a 461-bp fragment from the kDNAs of different Leishmania species. These primers amplify the specific fragment from the kDNAs of cutaneous species only. The cutaneous species can further be distinguished by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of the kDNAs of these organisms using arbitrarily chosen oligonucleotides. The arbitrary primers also generate polymorphic DNA fingerprints at the genomic level with different L. donovani isolates. The results indicate that the PCR and arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR) may be extremely useful approaches for identifying and distinguishing Leishmania parasites.

RESUMO

We have compared the sequences of a major class of kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) minicircle (pLURkE3) of Leishmania strain UR6 with other minicircle sequences from different Leishmania species. Alignment of these sequences allowed the selection of a pair of oligonucleotides suitable as primers in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which is specific for Leishmania parasites. PCR with this genus-specific primer set is capable of detecting 1 femtogram of kDNA. These primers have been tested with kDNAs from both old world and new world Leishmania species. The results indicate that the primers may be suitable for detection of any kind of leishmaniasis.

RESUMO

The principle of minimum dissipation of energy is utilized to obtain the spheromak configuration as a relaxed state. The Euler-Lagrange equation for the minimum dissipative relaxed state is solved in terms of Chandrasekhar-Kendall eigenfunctions analytically generalized in the complex domain. This state is non-force-free and further shows the nonconstancy of the ratio of parallel current to the magnetic field.

RESUMO

Using mutagenesis with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, a number of homoserine auxotrophs have been isolated from a glutamate-producing Arthrobacter globiformis excreting L-lysine in good amounts. For further improvement, mutants resistant to the lysine analog S-(2-aminoethyl)-L-cysteine have been isolated from homoserine auxotrophs. For the three potent mutants tested, White's medium was found to be the best. Glucose, ammonium nitrate and biotin were found to be optimum at 280 mmol/L, 40 mmol/L and 22 nmol/L, respectively. With optimal glucose, ammonium nitrate and biotin, the strain AECrVI yielded 36 g lysine per L in flask culture.

RESUMO

A case of penetrating thoraco-abdominal injury involving portal vein in the free margin of lesser omentum is reported; light traction on a tape sling or a tape tourniquet around the hepato-duodenal ligament applied just above the level of duodenum is an effective method of achieving haemostasis and space necessary for repair of portal venous injury at this site.
