RESUMO

Perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) is an n-type organic semiconductor molecule that has been widely utilized in numerous applications such as photocatalysis and field-effect transistors. Polarizability and dipole moment, which are inherent properties of molecules, are important parameters that determine their responses to external electric and optical fields, physical properties, and reactivity. These parameters are fundamentally important for the design of innovative materials. In this study, the effects of external electric fields on absorption and fluorescence spectra were investigated to obtain the PTCDI parameters. The PTCDI substituted by an octyl group (N,N'-Dioctyl-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide) dispersed in a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix was studied in this work. The features of vibronic progression in the absorption spectrum were analogous to those observed in solution. The red shift of the absorption band caused by the Stark effect was mainly observed in the presence of an external electric field. Changes in parameters such as the dipole moment and polarizability between the ground and the Franck-Condon excited states of the PTCDI monomer were determined. The fluorescence spectrum shows a contribution from a broad fluorescence band at wavelengths longer than the monomer fluorescence band. This broad fluorescence is ascribed to the excimer-like fluorescence of PTCDI. The effects of the electric field on the fluorescence spectrum, known as the Stark fluorescence or electrofluorescence spectrum, were measured. Fluorescence quenching is observed in the presence of an external electric field. The change in the polarizability of the monomer fluorescence band is in good agreement with that of the electroabsorption spectrum. A larger change in the polarizability was observed for the excimer-like fluorescence band than that for the monomer band. This result is consistent with exciton delocalization between PTCDI molecules in the excimer-like state.

RESUMO

Phytofiltration is an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach to the management of pollutants in aquatic system. The present study aimed at elucidating the process variables that defined the phytofiltration efficiency of invasive macrophytes in aquatic system. The invasion of macrophytes, such as Pistia stratiotes, of water bodies is an undesirable experience because of the challenges synonymous with their occurrence. Owing to the unfettered proliferation, high and rich biomass generation, and nutrient uptake capability, these macrophytes outcompete the native vegetation and reduce the distinctiveness of the biological communities at various scales. However, these same intrinsic features positioned them as an ideal phytofiltration species for the decontamination of polluted aqua systems. Herein, we provided an overview of the process of phytofiltration in an aquatic system, and the need to create a balanced ecological system through the exploitation of the potentials of macrophytes as phytoremediators. The translocation factor, type, and concentration of pollutants in the matrix, pH value, type of macrophyte employed are among the factors identified as determinants of the success or failure of invasive macrophytes as pollutant remediators in the aqua system. Therefore, the optimization of these variables, to enhance the phytoremediation potentials of the different macrophytes were critically appraised.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The opinion that latent Toxoplasma gondii infection is having a broadly asymptomatic projection has now been interrogated, in specific due to the echoed association between the latent infection and an elevated incidence of schizophrenia or even suicide attempts. Notwithstanding conducted studies aimed to understand this feasible link are restricted. METHODS: In the present case-control study, we focused to illuminate the relationship between the serological and molecular presence of T gondii and schizophrenia with or without the suicide attempts by comparing it with healthy individuals. A total of 237 participants (117 in schizophrenia and 120 in healthy control) were included in this study. RESULTS: Overall, latent T gondii infections were found statistically higher in 63 (53.8%) of the 117 patients with schizophrenia and in 33 (27.5%) of the 120 controls (P < .001). In schizophrenia patients, seroprevalence T gondii was again found to be statistically higher in suicide attempters (59.6%), compared with no history of suicide attempts (48.3%; P < .05). The molecular positivity rate of T gondii DNA was higher in the schizophrenia group, compared with the healthy control group (P < .05), whereas the history of suicide attempts was not statistically associated (P = .831) with T gondii DNA positivity by polymerase chain reaction. CONCLUSION: This case-control study enlightens additional demonstration to the belief that T gondii infection would be an underlying component for the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Regardless of the clarity results of this study, this supposition warrants further endorsement.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency, causes and post-repair outcomes of NOF in hospitals supported by the Fistula Care Plus (FC+) project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017 in three FC + supported fistula repair sites. RESULTS: Of 1984 women treated for female genital fistula between 2015 and 2017 in the three FC + supported hospitals, 384 (19%) were considered to be non-obstetric fistula (NOF) cases. 49.3% were married/in a relationship at the time of treatment vs. 69% before the fistula, P < 0.001. Type III (n = 247; 64.3%) and type I (n = 121; 31.5%) fistulas according to Kees/Waaldijk classification were the most common. The main causes of NOF were medical procedure (n = 305; 79.4%); of these, caesarean section (n = 234; 76.7%) and hysterectomy (n = 54; 17.7%) were the most common. At hospital discharge, the fistula was closed and dry in 353 women (95.7%). CONCLUSION: Non-obstetric fistula, particularly due to iatrogenic causes, was relatively common in the DRC, calling for more prevention that includes improved quality of care in maternal health services.

RESUMO

This study describes the purse-string suture technique using a mini-Pfannenstiel incision for the surgical treatment of large ovarian dermoid cysts. We investigated intra and postoperative outcomes in 24 patients who underwent removal of large ovarian dermoid cysts through a mini-Pfannenstiel incision using the purse-string suture technique. The surgical procedure was performed by two experienced surgeons. The mean diameter of the cysts was 11.9 cm. The mean operation time was 46 min and the intraoperative rupture rate was 8.3%. No patient developed chemical peritonitis. The length of hospitalisation was 36 h. The recurrence rate was 8.3% in the same ovary at 1-year follow-up. In conclusion, ovarian dermoid cysts measuring >8 cm in diameter can be effectively treated through a mini-Pfannenstiel incision using the purse-string suture technique.Impact StatementWhat is already known on this subject? Dermoid cysts are the most common ovarian germ cell tumours occurring in the second and third decades of life, and these tumours are usually treated surgically. There is a lack of consensus among gynaecologists regarding the optimal surgical treatment modalities for ovarian dermoid cysts; however, laparoscopic cystectomy is the gold standard for the surgical treatment of dermoid cysts. Notably, aspiration of dense cystic contents may be difficult during laparoscopic cystectomy. What do the results of this study add? Our technique enables easy removal of dense cystic materials including hair and bone fragments. The short operation time, low recurrence rate and the minimal incisional scar serve as advantages of our novel method. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This surgical technique can be successfully used in clinical settings with limited facilities for laparoscopic surgery.

RESUMO

Dogs were the first domesticated species, originating at least 15,000 y ago from Eurasian gray wolves. Dogs today consist primarily of two specialized groups--a diverse set of nearly 400 pure breeds and a far more populous group of free-ranging animals adapted to a human commensal lifestyle (village dogs). Village dogs are more genetically diverse and geographically widespread than purebred dogs making them vital for unraveling dog population history. Using a semicustom 185,805-marker genotyping array, we conducted a large-scale survey of autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y chromosome diversity in 4,676 purebred dogs from 161 breeds and 549 village dogs from 38 countries. Geographic structure shows both isolation and gene flow have shaped genetic diversity in village dog populations. Some populations (notably those in the Neotropics and the South Pacific) are almost completely derived from European stock, whereas others are clearly admixed between indigenous and European dogs. Importantly, many populations--including those of Vietnam, India, and Egypt-show minimal evidence of European admixture. These populations exhibit a clear gradient of short--range linkage disequilibrium consistent with a Central Asian domestication origin.

RESUMO

After years of development, the RadLex terminology contains a large set of controlled terms for the radiology domain, but gaps still exist. We developed a data-driven approach to discover new terms for RadLex by mining a large corpus of radiology reports using natural language processing (NLP) methods. Our system, developed for mammography, discovers new candidate terms by analyzing noun phrases in free-text reports to extend the mammography part of RadLex. Our NLP system extracts noun phrases from free-text mammography reports and classifies these noun phrases as "Has Candidate RadLex Term" or "Does Not Have Candidate RadLex Term." We tested the performance of our algorithm using 100 free-text mammography reports. An expert radiologist determined the true positive and true negative RadLex candidate terms. We calculated precision/positive predictive value and recall/sensitivity metrics to judge the system's performance. Finally, to identify new candidate terms for enhancing RadLex, we applied our NLP method to 270,540 free-text mammography reports obtained from three academic institutions. Our method demonstrated precision/positive predictive value of 0.77 (159/206 terms) and a recall/sensitivity of 0.94 (159/170 terms). The overall accuracy of the system is 0.80 (235/293 terms). When we ran our system on the set of 270,540 reports, it found 31,800 unique noun phrases that are potential candidates for RadLex. Our data-driven approach to mining radiology reports can identify new candidate terms for expanding the breast imaging lexicon portion of RadLex and may be a useful approach for discovering new candidate terms from other radiology domains.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical performance of two chlamydia point-of-care (POC) tests compared with a gold standard nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT). METHODS: Tests evaluated were the Chlamydia Rapid Test (CRT), Diagnostics for the Real World and the ACON Chlamydia Rapid Test Device, ACON Laboratories (ACON). Overall 226 men and 225 women in Port Vila, Vanuatu, participated in this prospective study in 2010. NAAT and POC testing was performed on samples of male urine and female vaginal swabs for 156 men and 223 women (CRT), and 133 men and 75 women (ACON). RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of the CRT in men were 41.4% (95% CI 23.5% to 61.1%) and 89.0% (95% CI 82.2% to 93.8%), respectively, and in women 74.2% (95% CI 61.5% to 84.5%) and 95.7% (95% CI 91.3% to 98.2%), respectively; for ACON, they were 43.8% (95% CI 19.8% to 70.1%) and 98.3% (95% CI 93.9% to 99.8%) in men, and in women 66.7% (95% CI 22.3% to 95.7%) and 91.3% (95% CI 82.0% to 96.7%), respectively. Both tests were (absolutely) insensitive at organism loads less than 1000 (log=3) per mL or per swab; the CRT sensitivity was significantly lower at loads less than, compared with those greater than, 100 000 (log=5) per mL or per swab. CONCLUSIONS: The performance of both CRT and ACON is well below the levels stated by the manufacturers. The evaluated tests are unlikely to be helpful in clinical settings due to the high proportion of false-negatives that will go untreated and false-positives that will result in overtreatment and potential adverse social consequences.

RESUMO

There is insufficient data on sexually transmitted infections (STI) and related behaviours among key populations, including female sex workers (FSW), in the Pacific region. Using respondent driven sampling, we conducted an integrated bio-behavioural survey with FSW in Vanuatu (aged ≥18 years) to investigate risk behaviours associations with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT). Weighted population estimates and correlates of CT infection were calculated. Among 149 FSW, prevalence of CT was 36 % (95 % CI 26-48 %). Few FSW reported consistent condom use with recent transactional sex partners (TSP) (8 %; 95 % CI 2-13 %). CT infection was positively associated with increasing number of TSP (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.1; 95 % CI 1.0-1.2) and group sex (AOR 2.9; 95 % CI 1.1-8.2). CT was negatively associated with increasing age of first sex (AOR 0.6; 95 % CI 0.5-0.9) and previous STI treatment (AOR 0.1; 95 % CI 0.0-0.4). A comprehensive public health strategy for prevention and treatment of STI among FSW, incorporating community empowerment strategies, FSW-targeted health services and periodic presumptive treatment, is urgently needed in Vanuatu.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Onset of sexual activity during adolescence is common in Vanuatu, however access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information is limited. Improving adolescents' knowledge about SRH is necessary to improve health outcomes, however little is known about the information needs and preferences of adolescents in the Pacific to inform policy and programs in this region. METHODS: Sixty-six focus group discussions were conducted with 341 male and female adolescents aged 15-19 years from rural and urban communities on two islands of Vanuatu. Twelve key-informant interviews were also conducted with policymakers and health service providers. Data were analysed thematically using an inductive approach. RESULTS: Much of the SRH information targeting adolescents focused on sexually transmitted infections and HIV. While this information was valued, important gaps were identified including prevention of pregnancy, condom use, puberty, sexuality and relationships. Peer educators and health workers were adolescents' preferred sources of information because they were considered knowledgeable and trustworthy. Parents were not a common source but were preferred, particularly by girls, despite considerable socio-cultural barriers. Schools were an important but underutilised source of information, as were a range of media sources. CONCLUSIONS: Providing adolescents with comprehensive SRH information can have life-long protective benefits, however there are important content gaps in information currently provided in Vanuatu. The broad range of sources preferred by adolescents highlights the need to strengthen information provision through multiple channels to reach in and out-of-school youth and respond to individual needs and contexts.

RESUMO

The realization of an integrated diamond photonic platform, based on a thin single crystal diamond film on top of a silicon dioxide/silicon substrate, is reported. Using this approach, we demonstrate high-quality factor single crystal diamond race-track resonators, operating at near-infrared wavelengths (1550 nm). The devices are integrated with low-loss diamond waveguides terminated with polymer pads (spot size converters) to facilitate in- (out-) coupling of light from (to) an optical fiber. Optical characterization of these resonators reveal quality factors as high as ~250,000 and overall insertion losses as low as 1 dB/facet. Scattering induced mode splitting as well as signatures of nonlinear effects such as optical bistability are observed at an input pump power of ~100 mW in the waveguides.

RESUMO

The intriguing optoelectronic properties, diverse applications, and facile fabrication techniques of perovskite materials have garnered substantial research interest worldwide. Their outstanding performance in solar cell applications and excellent efficiency at the lab scale have already been proven. However, owing to their low stability, the widespread manufacturing of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) for commercialization is still far off. Several instability factors of PSCs, including the intrinsic and extrinsic instability of perovskite materials, have already been identified, and a variety of approaches have been adopted to improve the material quality, stability, and efficiency of PSCs. In this review, we have comprehensively presented the significance of band gap tuning in achieving both high-performance and high-stability PSCs in the presence of various degradation factors. By investigating the mechanisms of band gap engineering, we have highlighted its pivotal role in optimizing PSCs for improved efficiency and resilience.

RESUMO

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that remains the most common malignancy among women worldwide. During genomic analysis of breast tumours, mRNA levels of IQGAP3 were found to be upregulated in triple negative tumours. IQGAP3 was subsequently found to be expressed across a panel of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines. Depleting expression levels of IQGAP3 delivered elongated cells, disrupted cell migration, and inhibited the ability of cells to form specialised invasive adhesion structures, termed invadopodia. The morphological changes induced by IQGAP3 depletion were found to be dependent on RhoA. Indeed, reduced expression of IQGAP3 disrupted RhoA activity and actomyosin contractility. Interestingly, IQGAP3 was also found to interact with p-21 activated kinase 6 (PAK6); a protein already associated with the regulation of cell morphology. Moreover, PAK6 depletion phenocopied IQGAP3 depletion in these cells. Whereas PAK6 overexpression rescued the IQGAP3 depletion phenotype. Our work points to an important PAK6-IQGAP3-RhoA pathway that drives the cellular contractility of breast cancer cells promoting both cell migration and adhesive invasion of these cells. As this phenotype is relevant to the process of metastasis and re-seeding of metastasis, the pharmacological targeting of PAK6 could lead to clinical benefit in TNBC patients.

RESUMO

We present here an optomechanical system fabricated with novel stress management techniques that allow us to suspend an ultrathin defect-free silicon photonic-crystal membrane above a Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) substrate with a gap that is tunable to below 200 nm. Our devices are able to generate strong attractive and repulsive optical forces over a large surface area with simple in- and out- coupling and feature the strongest repulsive optomechanical coupling in any geometry to date (gOM/2π ≈65 GHz/nm). The interplay between the optomechanical and photo-thermal-mechanical dynamics is explored, and the latter is used to achieve cooling and amplification of the mechanical mode, demonstrating that our platform is well-suited for potential applications in low-power mass, force, and refractive-index sensing as well as optomechanical accelerometry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sexual activity during adolescence is common in Vanuatu, however many adolescents lack access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and subsequently suffer a disproportionate burden of poor SRH. There is limited peer-reviewed research describing adolescents' SRH service delivery preferences in Vanuatu to inform policy and programs. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the barriers preventing adolescents from accessing SRH services in Vanuatu and the features of a youth-friendly health service as defined by adolescents. METHODS: Sixty-six focus group discussions were conducted with 341 male and female adolescents aged 15-19 years in rural and urban communities. Additionally, 12 semi-structured interviews were undertaken with policymakers and service providers. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Socio-cultural norms and taboos regarding adolescent sexual behaviour were the most significant factors preventing adolescents from accessing services. These contributed to adolescents' own fear and shame, judgmental attitudes of service providers, and disapproval from parents and community gate-keepers. Lack of confidentiality and privacy, costs, and adolescents' lack of SRH knowledge were also important barriers. Adolescents and service providers identified opportunities to make existing services more youth-friendly. The most important feature of a youth-friendly health service described by adolescents was a friendly service provider. Free or affordable services, reliable commodity supply, confidentiality and privacy were also key features. The need to address socio-cultural norms and community knowledge and attitudes was also highlighted. CONCLUSIONS: There are significant demand and supply-side barriers contributing to low utilisation of SRH services by adolescents in Vanuatu. However, there are many opportunities to make existing SRH services more youth-friendly, such as improving service provider training. Investment is also required in strategies that aim to create a more supportive environment for adolescent SRH.

RESUMO

The first and foremost intent of our present study is to design a perovskite solar cell favorable for realistic applications with excellent efficiency by utilizing SCAPS-1D. To ensure this motive, the detection of a compatible electron transport layer (ETL) and hole transport layer (HTL) for the suggested mixed perovskite layer entitled FA0.85Cs0.15Pb (I0.85Br0.15)3 (MPL) was carried out, employing diver ETLs such as SnO2, PCBM, TiO2, ZnO, CdS, WO3 and WS2, and HTLs such as Spiro-OMeTAD, P3HT, CuO, Cu2O, CuI, and MoO3. The attained simulated results, especially for FTO/SnO2/FA0.85Cs0.15Pb (I0.85Br0.15)3/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au, have been authenticated by the theoretical and experimental data, which endorse our simulation process. From the detailed numerical analysis, WS2 and MoO3 were chosen as ETL and HTL, respectively, for designing the proposed novel structure of FA0.85Cs0.15Pb (I0.85Br0.15)3-based perovskite solar cells. With the inspection of several parameters such as variation of the thickness of FA0.85Cs0.15Pb (I0.85Br0.15)3, WS2, and MoO3 including different defect densities, the novel proposed structure has been optimized, and a noteworthy efficiency of 23.39% was achieved with the photovoltaic parameters of VOC = 1.07 V, JSC = 21.83 mA cm-2, and FF = 73.41%. The dark J-V analysis unraveled the reasons for the excellent photovoltaic parameters of our optimized structure. Furthermore, the scrutinizing of QE, C-V, Mott-Schottky plot, and the impact of the hysteresis of the optimized structure was executed for further investigation. Our overall investigation disclosed the fact that the proposed novel structure (FTO/WS2/FA0.85Cs0.15Pb (I0.85Br0.15)3/MoO3/Au) can be attested as a supreme structure for perovskite solar cells with greater efficiency as well as admissible for practical purposes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to examine the psychiatric symptoms that can be seen in fibromyalgia (FM) patients, their attitudes toward seeking psychological help, and their concerns about stigma. Besides, it was investigated whether the stigma concerns that they may experience about receiving psychiatric treatment constitute an obstacle for patients to receive psychiatric treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between February and July 2020. Various seeking help were measured with Attitude Towards Seeking Psychological Help Scale-Short Form (ATSPPH-SF), Self-Stigma in the Process of Seeking Psychological Help Scale (SSPSPHS), Intention to Seek Psychological Help Inventory (ISPHI), and Social Stigma Due to Seeking Psychological Help Scale (SSDSPHS). FM symptoms of patients were measured with The Symptom Screening Questionnaire, Revised 90 Items (SCL-90-R). Quality-of-life parameters were measured with Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). RESULTS: Fibromyalgia patients had higher somatization (p=0.001), psychotism (p=0.045) and phobic anxiety (p=0.015) scores than controls. The ATSPPH-SF (p=0.002) and SSPSPHS (p=0.043) scale scores of the FM patients were higher than the controls. There was a significant positive correlation between FIQ and SSPSPHS (r=0.288, p=0.043) and SCL-90 overall (r=0.602, p<0.001) and all subscales scores. Patients with high active psychotic symptom levels had higher FM exposure scale scores and SCL-90 overall scores than those with low active psychotic symptom levels (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study showed that fibromyalgia patients have more somatization symptoms than healthy individuals, and as psychiatric symptoms increase in these individuals, their level of being affected by FM increases.

RESUMO

The potentials of the nutrient recovered (NRM), via a facile green and sustainable approach from human urine, as a fertilizer in soil-crop system was studied. Nutrient was recovered using a highly decentralized modular reactor, with packed bed of granular gastropod shell. The cultivations of Zea mays (maize) and Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) were the cases studied. The total nutrient composition, the P-speciation, and the safety-risk assessment of the NRM were determined. Using NPK as the standard fertilizer, and a non-fertilized soil as the control, the fertilizing potential of the NRM was evaluated. The influence of the different fertilizer application regimes on the wet and dry biomass nutrient composition, after-harvest soil nutrient composition, and pH values was studied. The NRM contained 106 mg/g of TN and 374.6 mg/g of TP, and the P species identified were Ca2-P (31.66%), Ca8-P (14.99%), and Ca10-P (53.32%). The growth rate of the NRM crops were lower than that of the NPK crops until the 17th day, when the NRM crops grew faster than that of the NPK and control (p < 0.05). The NRM is beneficial to acidic soils and also acts as a slow nutrient releasing fertilizer.
