RESUMO

Despite extensive research having been carried out on nurse-physician collaboration, there remains a paucity of evidence on how collaboration interacts with organizational commitment and its effect on turnover intention. This study aims to determine the mediating role of nurse-physician collaboration on the effect of organizational commitment on turnover intention. We used a cross-sectional design based on voluntary paper surveys from the inpatient clinics of six public hospitals in the north of Turkey. Data including measures of nurse-physician collaboration, organizational commitment, and turnover intention were collected from a convenience sample of the nurses (n = 212) and physicians (n = 109). Pearson's correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between variables, and the mediating effect was analyzed with PROCESS Macro "Model 4" for IBM SPSS. Statistical significance was specified at 95% confidence intervals and two-tailed P values of <0.05 for all tests. While most of the participants were nurses (66%), 34% were physicians. For both nurses and physicians, organizational commitment and nurse-physician collaboration negatively affected the turnover intention. However, the mediating role of nurse-physician collaboration was only significant for nurses (b = -0.025). The results demonstrate the importance of harmony, joint decision-making, and responsibility-sharing between nurses and physicians concerning dedication, engagement, and job satisfaction, especially for nurses.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine health professionals' opinions toward family presence during invasive procedures in children, and to see the difference between the attitudes of physicians and nurses on the issue. METHODS: The descriptive study was conducted in June 2016 at the Paediatrics Clinic of Karadeniz Technical University Farabi Hospital, Trabzon, Turkey, and comprised health professionals working at the clinics. Data regarding attitudes of physicians and nurses on family presence during invasive procedures in children was collected using a questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 95 health professionals, 71(75%) were nurses and 24(25%) were paediatric physicians. Overall, 41(43.2%) subjects supported the idea of family presence during invasive procedures in children; 31(43.7) nurses and 10(41.7) physicians. The 54(56.8%) professionals who did not support family presence cited two major reasons; "Family gives an emotional response (p=0.001)", "It increases the stress of the healthcare provider performing the procedure" (p=0.00)". CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare professionals largely did not support the idea of family presence as they believed that the invasive procedures became more challenging..

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate websites of in-vitro fertilisation centres in terms of standardised ethical guidelines for advertising. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted in Turkey from February to April 2017. A total of 148 IVF centre websites were evaluated in terms of objective criteria in accordance with American Medical Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, American Society for Reproductive Medicine / Society for Assisted Reproductive. Technology guidelines for advertising. Websites were surveyed with attention paid to success rates, testimonials, sales promotions, price, psychological support offered as part of the service, regulating / certifying bodies, misleading language, and the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. Data was analysed using SPSS 23. RESULTS: Out of 193 centres, 148(76.7%) had active websites; 104(70.3%) private, 38(25.7%) in university hospitals and 6(4%) in state hospitals. Of them, 103(69.6%) centres used at least one example of misleading language when compared to the relevant guidelines. Among these centres, 82(79.6%) were private, 18(17.5%) university hospitals and 3(2.9%) were state hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: A massive majority of websites related to in-vitro fertilisation centres did not follow standardised guidelines for advertising.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with cancer may experience posttraumatic growth (PTG). In clinical practice, this parental enhancement is more likely to be seen with a moderate-high PTG. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the moderate-high PTG prevalence of parents of children diagnosed with cancer at least 6 months and to investigate its relationship with hope, social support, and patient-parent characteristics. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with the parents of children with cancer admitted to the pediatric hematology-oncology unit using the Parent-Child Characteristic Questionnaire, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Dispositional Hope Scale. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the variables associated with moderate-high PTG. RESULTS: One hundred one parents were enrolled in this study, and the prevalence of the moderate-high PTG was 79.2%. There was a statistically significant difference between moderate-high PTG and children's age (P = .037). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that social support from significant others (odds ratio = 1.138, 95% confidence interval = 1.030-1.257, P = .011) was a predictor of moderate-high PTG. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-high PTG is common among parents of children diagnosed with cancer. Perceived social support from healthcare professionals and other patient parents is a predictive factor. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Interventions that encourage the support of health professionals and interaction with the parents of other patients, such as peer counseling, group-based interventions, and expanding the social support network, seem to be clinically promising in helping parents to improve from the cancer experience.

RESUMO

This study was carried out to determine the effects of peer education on breast self-examination (BSE) knowledge and health beliefs. 180 female university students were trained in BSE by the nursing students. Students instructed in groups by their peers showed a much higher degree of BSE knowledge. It was also found that perceived confidence of the students educated both individually and in groups increased afterward. Study results further revealed that the methods used for peer instruction do not affect students' sub-dimensions of health beliefs differently after the education.

RESUMO

PROBLEM: This research was undertaken to determine the attitudes and health beliefs of a sample of Turkish women about breast self-examination (BSE), clinical breast examination, and mammography. DESIGN: Data were collected by means of a researcher-designed questionnaire and the Champion Health Belief Model Scale. A total of 1,342 women participated in this study. RESULTS: It was found that 10.1% of the women practiced BSE once a month, 19.8% of the women had had a clinical breast examination, and 15.0% had had a mammogram. Age and marital status were significant variables that influenced whether the women used only one or multiple methods for early detection of breast cancer. Participants who had higher levels of confidence for BSE and lower perceptions of barriers to BSE were more likely to perform BSE. Participants who perceived higher levels of confidence to perform BSE were more likely to be using all three early detection methods. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Interventions and strategies that help women develop confidence in their abilities to perform early breast cancer detection methods are likely to encourage them to engage in regular screening for breast cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of various training methods for breast self-examination (BSE) knowledge, practice, and health beliefs. METHODS: The quasi-experimental investigation was carried out in an area where two community health care centers are located, in the city of Trabzon, Turkey. Divided randomly into three groups, 1,342 women were instructed in BSE using individual or group training or by way of pamphlets. Data were gathered in four stages: during the pretraining and one month, six months and twelve months after training. RESULTS: All of the training methods used in the study produced a significant increase in the participants' BSE knowledge, but individually trained women scored higher than did the others. Regardless of the training method, BSE instruction improved the women's perceived confidence and benefits, while their perceived barriers declined. The variables influencing BSE practice were found to be BSE practice at the pretraining period, perceived confidence in and benefits from BSE six months after BSE instruction, and health motivation one year after training. No significant difference was found in women's BSE performance scores one year after training. CONCLUSION: This study in which three training methods were used enabled us to assess the effectiveness of instruction on BSE performance and competence. In addition, it provided us with valuable information on how training methods can influence health beliefs related to BSE.
