RESUMO

Methylation of the SKA2 (spindle and kinetochore-associated complex subunit 2) gene has recently been identified as a promising biomarker of suicide risk. Based on this finding, we examined associations between SKA2 methylation, cortical thickness and psychiatric phenotypes linked to suicide in trauma-exposed veterans. About 200 trauma-exposed white non-Hispanic veterans of the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan (91% male) underwent clinical assessment and had blood drawn for genotyping and methylation analysis. Of all, 145 participants also had neuroimaging data available. Based on previous research, we examined DNA methylation at the cytosine-guanine locus cg13989295 as well as DNA methylation adjusted for genotype at the methylation-associated single nucleotide polymorphism (rs7208505) in relationship to whole-brain cortical thickness, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD) and depression symptoms. Whole-brain vertex-wise analyses identified three clusters in prefrontal cortex that were associated with genotype-adjusted SKA2 DNA methylation (methylation(adj)). Specifically, DNA methylation(adj) was associated with bilateral reductions of cortical thickness in frontal pole and superior frontal gyrus, and similar effects were found in the right orbitofrontal cortex and right inferior frontal gyrus. PTSD symptom severity was positively correlated with SKA2 DNA methylation(adj) and negatively correlated with cortical thickness in these regions. Mediation analyses showed a significant indirect effect of PTSD on cortical thickness via SKA2 methylation status. Results suggest that DNA methylation(adj) of SKA2 in blood indexes stress-related psychiatric phenotypes and neurobiology, pointing to its potential value as a biomarker of stress exposure and susceptibility.

RESUMO

Nanometer length-scale holes (nanopores) are often formed in amorphous materials for fundamental studies of molecular mass transport. In the current study, electron beam irradiation in the transmission electron microscope was used to form nanopores in a crystalline material (Si). Analysis of the nanopores showed that they are formed by knock-on of atoms by the high energy incident electron beam, and surface diffusion is partially responsible for the hour-glass shapes that are found for some nanopores. Energetically favorable three-dimensional shapes of nanopores were simulated, and the nanopores simulated in the model crystalline material were found to be more stable than the nanopores simulated in the amorphous material. The nanopore shape was also found to depend on the nanopore diameter-to-length ratio. Based on the above, we demonstrate the advantage in using a crystalline material for nanopore formation and show that control of the three-dimensional shape of nanopores formed by electron beam irradiation is possible.

RESUMO

III-V semiconductor nanowires deterministically placed on top of silicon electronic platform would open many avenues in silicon-based photonics, quantum technologies and energy harvesting. For this to become a reality, gold-free site-selected growth is necessary. Here, we propose a mechanism which gives a clear route for maximizing the nanowire yield in the self-catalyzed growth fashion. It is widely accepted that growth of nanowires occurs on a layer-by-layer basis, starting at the triple-phase line. Contrary to common understanding, we find that vertical growth of nanowires starts at the oxide-substrate line interface, forming a ring-like structure several layers thick. This is granted by optimizing the diameter/height aspect ratio and cylindrical symmetry of holes, which impacts the diffusion flux of the group V element through the well-positioned group III droplet. This work provides clear grounds for realistic integration of III-Vs on silicon and for the organized growth of nanowires in other material systems.

RESUMO

Over the past 15 years we have developed a protocol for evaluation and medical management of urinary calculi that has proved quite effective. For all patients we include plain x-ray films of the urinary tract, intravenous pyelograms, urine cultures and sensitivity studies, serum and 24-hour urinary chemical determinations, and analysis of any stones recovered. Although the cause of calcium stones, the most common type of urinary calculi, has not been established, specific treatment regimens have been devised. Maintenance of a dilute urine remains the mainstay of therapy, and diuretics, alkalinizing or acidifying agents, and various specific drugs may be indicated, depending on laboratory findings. Surgery is not indicated unless the stone is large, is in the upper part of the urinary tract, or shows no signs of movement.
