RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to analyze the clinical features and laboratory markers of patients with Delta variant SARS-CoV-2 and explore the role of platelet in predicting the severity of Delta. METHODS: This retrospective, observational study was conducted on 863 patients laboratory-confirmed Delta variant SARS-CoV-2. These cases were sub-classified based on disease severity into mild (n = 304), moderate (n = 537), and severe (n = 22). A series of laboratory findings and clinical data were collected and analyzed during hospitalization. RESULTS: Of 863 hospitalized patients with Delta, the median age was 38 years (interquartile range, 30-51 years) and 471 (54.58%) were male. The most common clinical symptoms mainly included cough, fever, pharyngalgia, expectoration, dyspnea, fatigue, and headache, and the commonest comorbidities were hypertension and diabetes. Among the hematological variables, neutrophil count, red blood cell count, and hemoglobin, were found to be statistically significant with regard to subcategories based of disease severity (p < 0.05). Among coagulation parameters, there was a statistically significant difference in D-dimer, fibrinogen, international normalized ratio, and prothrombin time (p < 0.05). Statistically significant differences were observed in platelet markers including platelet count, large platelet count, and plateletcrit (p < 0.05). Additionally, there was strong correlation between platelet and other parameters with disease severity. Logistical regression analysis and ROC curves showed that D-dimer was a single best marker of disease severity (p = 0.005, p < 0.0001); however, platelet (p = 0.009, p = 0.002) and plateletcrit (p = 0.002, p = 0.001) could also predict severe disease. Platelet was identified as an independent risk factor for severe Delta. CONCLUSION: Low platelet may be a marker of disease severity in Delta variant SARS-CoV-2 and may contribute to determine the severity of patients infected with Delta.

RESUMO

The research and development of absorbing materials with high absorbing capacity, wide effective absorption bandwidth, and lightweight has always been interesting. In this research, a facile hydrothermal method was used to prepare MnFe2O4, and the grain size of MnFe2O4 decreased with increasing hydrothermal temperature. When the size of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles is less than 10 nm, its quantum size effect and surface effect make its electromagnetic microwave absorption performance greatly optimized. When the thickness of MnFe2O4-110 °C is 2.57 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) is -35.28 dB. Based on this, light porous diatomite and a three-dimensional polyaniline network are introduced. Diatomite is used as the base material to effectively reduce the agglomeration of MnFe2O4 quantum dots. The relatively high surface area introduced by a three-dimensional network of polyaniline promotes the orientation, interfacial polarization, multiple relaxation, and impedance matching, thereby generating further dielectric loss. Additionally, the magnetic properties of manganese ferrite and the strong electrical conductivity of polyaniline play an appropriate complementary role in electromagnetic wave absorption. The RLmin of MnFe2O4/PANI/diatomite is -56.70 dB at 11.12 GHz with an absorber layer thickness of 2.57 mm. The effective frequency bandwidth (RL < -10 dB) ranges from 9.21 to 18.00 GHz. The absorption mechanism indicates that the high absorption intensity is the result of the synergistic effect of impedance matching, conduction losses, polarization losses, and magnetic losses.

RESUMO

Metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa) patients complicated with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) are often referred to a urologist. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) combined with indwelling catheter usually be the initial management. To retrospectively analysis the safety and efficacy of simultaneous thulium laser resection of the prostate (TmLRP) and transperineal prostate biopsy in metastatic prostate cancer with bladder outlet obstruction. From January 2016 to December 2021, 67 clinically diagnosed mPCa with BOO patients were included in this study. All patients were preoperatively assessed with international prostate symptom score (IPSS), QoL, serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), prostate volume evaluation by transrectal ultrasound, postvoid residual urine volume (PVR), and maximum flow rate (Qmax). Preoperative and perioperative parameters at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up were also evaluated. All complications were recorded. Simultaneous TmLRP and transperineal prostate biopsy had obvious advantages for clinically diagnosed mPCa patients with BOO, including short overall operation time (52 ± 23.3 min), little hemoglobin decrease (0.6 ± 0.7 g/l), and short hospital stay (average 3.8 days). In addition, simultaneous TmLRP and transperineal prostate biopsy also brought them significant improvement on IPSS, QoL score, Qmax, and PVR volume (P < 0.001) at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up after operation compared to preoperative parameters. Complications were in a low incidence. Simultaneous TmLRP and transperineal prostate biopsy is a bloodless operation with immediate effect and little perioperative complication. Importantly, it is a promising technology in the diagnosis and treatment of clinically diagnosed mPCa patients with BOO.

RESUMO

A large body of literature has identified that circular RNAs play critical roles in regulating the occurrence and development of cardiovascular disease. In the present study, we intended to provide new ideas and perspectives on the functional role of circ-CBFB in hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-injured cardiomyocytes. We observed that circ-CBFB expression was enhanced which was accompanied by a miR-495-3p reduction in response to H/R exposure. Functionally, deletion of circ-CBFB obviously potentiated cell viability and restrained cell apoptosis, which was accompanied by a remarkable elevation of antiapoptotic Bcl-2 but the repression of proapoptotic Bax and cleaved caspase-3 in response to H/R. Additionally, the absence of circ-CBFB dramatically prohibited H/R-evoked cardiomyocyte oxidative stress, as revealed by a decrease in reactive oxygen species overproduction, diminution in MAD content, and enhancement in SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px activities. Moreover, elimination of circ-CBFB resulted in improvement of mitochondrial dysfunction, as assessed by mitochondrial membrane potential, adenosine triphosphate production, and the release of cyto-c. Interestingly, circ-CBFB inversely regulated miR-495-3p expression via acting as a competing endogenous RNA. VDAC1 was identified to be a functional target of miR-495-3p and positively modulated by circ-CBFB. Mechanically, dissipation of miR-495-3p or augmentation of VDAC1 manifestly counteracted the beneficial effects of circ-CBFB knockdown on H/R-elicited cardiomyocyte insult. Collectively, these observations demonstrated that absence of circ-CBFB offered cardio-protection against H/R-triggered cardiomyocyte injury by relieving apoptosis, oxidative stress, and mitochondria dysfunction through miR-495-3p/VDAC1 axis. This work unveiled an innovative axis of circ-CBFB/miR-495-3p/VDAC1 in H/R-challenged cardiomyocyte damage, exerting its potential in providing new thoughts in acute myocardial infarction management.

RESUMO

Neonatal pneumonia is a high neonatal mortality disease. The current research was designed to elucidate the modulatory function and feasible molecular mechanism of UCA1 in LPS-induced injury in pneumonia. Herein, LPS was applied to induce WI-38 cell inflammatory damage. We displayed that UCA1 was elevated in LPS-injured WI-38 cells. In the functional aspect, intervention of UCA1 evidently aggrandized cell viability in LPS-triggered WI-38 cells. In the meanwhile, elimination of UCA1 distinctly assuaged cell apoptosis concomitant with declined levels of proapoptotic proteins Bax and C-caspase-3, and ascended the expression of antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2. Subsequently, disruption of UCA1 manifestly restrained inflammatory damage as characterized by declination of multiple pro-inflammatory factors IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α in WI-38 cells under LPS circumstance. More importantly, we predicted and verified that UCA1 functioned as a ceRNA by efficaciously binding to miR-499b-5p thereby inversely adjusting miR-499b-5p expression. Interesting, TLR4 was identified as direct target of miR-499b-5p, and positively regulated by UCA1 through sponging miR-499b-5p. Mechanistically, absence of miR-499b-5p or restoration of TLR4 impeded the beneficial effects of UCA1 ablation on LPS-stimulated apoptosis and inflammatory response. Collectively, these observations illuminated that UCA1 inhibition protected WI-38 cells against LPS-managed inflammatory injury and apoptosis process via miR-499b-5p/TLR4 crosstalk, which ultimately influencing the development of pneumonia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Since the National Malaria Elimination Action Plan was launched in China in 2010, local malaria transmission has decreased rapidly. Zero indigenous cases were reported since 2017. However, after 2010, the proportion of imported cases in China increased from 45.7% in 2010 to 99.9% in 2016, and almost all provinces of China have reported imported cases in recent years. Prevention of the reintroduction of malaria into China is crucial for the maintenance of its malaria-free status. Hence, it is of utmost importance to correctly identify the source of malaria infections within the country. CASE INTRODUCTION AND RESPONSE: In 2016 and 2017, three laboratory-confirmed cases of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum were identified in patients with no previous travel history to endemic areas were reported in Jiangsu Province, China, where malaria due to P. falciparum was eliminated about 30 years ago. These were diagnosed after 41, 31 and 39 days of seeking treatment, respectively, and all of them had received blood transfusions. Further investigations indicated that two of the cases had received blood from foreign students (from Indonesia and Ghana), and the other had received blood from an individual who had worked in Equatorial Guinea. All three blood donors were traced, and found to be carrying asymptomatic P. falciparum infections by microscopic examination and PCR. Furthermore, five polymorphic microsatellite markers (C1M4, C4M62, C13M13, C14M17, and C13M63) were typed and used to link parasites from the donors with those of the transfusion-receiving patients. CONCLUSIONS: Three transfusion-transmitted malaria cases were identified in China, all of which were due to the transfusion of blood donated by individuals who had contracted malaria outside the country. These cases can provide a reference for those faced with similar challenges in malaria case identification and classification in other regions. In addition, a stricter screening policy including the use of appropriate detection methods for malaria parasites should be developed and adopted for blood donation in regions undergoing malaria elimination.

RESUMO

The separation of organic liquid mixtures is achieved by Cu(OH)2 nanoneedle-covered copper mesh based on the difference of the liquid surface tension. The as-prepared membrane allows the penetration of organic liquid with smaller surface tension and blocks the higher. Thus, the effective separation of these two organic liquids can be achieved.

RESUMO

Background: Many studies have explored the accuracy of the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) in predicting mortality in prehospital and emergency settings, but their findings are inconsistent. Whether NEWS2 is reliable for the pre-examination and triage of patients in prehospital settings and emergency departments remains debatable. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of NEWS2 in predicting mortality in prehospital settings and emergency departments. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, Wan Fang Data, Vip Database and SinoMed from the inception of each database to January 2023. The inclusion criteria: (I) patients in the prehospital settings or emergency departments; (II) the NEWS2 for predicting 2-day mortality, 30-day mortality, and in-hospital mortality; (III) sufficient data, such as sensitivity, specificity, overall survival, and deaths, were provided for the study; (IV) the type of study was accuracy prediction study. Two authors independently extracted data, including authors, year of publication, country of origin, study design, sample size, threshold cutoff values of NEWS2, and mortality. The PROBAST was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Results: Thirty studies with 185,835 participants were included. Among the 30 included studies, 13 have a high risk of bias, and 17 have a low risk of bias. The pooled sensitivity, specificity and AUC of 2-day mortality (early mortality), 30-day mortality and in-hospital mortality were 0.81 vs. 0.76 vs. 0.72 (95% CI: 0.61, 0.80), 0.81 vs. 0.69 vs. 0.78 (95% CI: 0.49, 0.93) and 0.88 vs. 0.80 vs. 0.78 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.82), respectively. Conclusions: NEWS2 has excellent sensitivity and specificity in predicting early mortality in patients in the prehospitals setting and emergency departments. Nonetheless, it has poor performance in predicting in-hospital mortality and 30-day mortality. Our findings underpin the use of NEWS2 as a pre-examination and triage tool to predict early death in the prehospital settings and emergency departments. To improve the predictive accuracy, it should be used to monitor patients continuously rather than at a single point-in-time.

RESUMO

Objective: Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency increases the risk of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the risk factors associated with hyperbilirubinemia in infants from the western part of Guangdong Province, and to assess the contribution of G6PD deficiency to neonatal jaundice. Methods: The term infants with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in People's Hospital of Yangjiang from June 2018 to July 2022 were recruited for the retrospective analysis. All the infants underwent quantitative detection of the G6PD enzyme. The etiology was determined through laboratory tests and clinical manifestations. Results: Out of 1,119 term infants, 435 cases presented with jaundice. For the etiology analysis, infection was responsible for 16.09% (70/435), G6PD deficiency accounted for 9.66% (42/435), of which 3 were complicated with acute bilirubin encephalopathy), bleeding accounted for 8.05% (35/435), hemolytic diseases accounted for 3.45% (15/435), and breast milk jaundice accounted for 2.53% (11/435). One case (0.23%) was attributed to congenital hypothyroidism, multiple etiologies accounted for 22.3% (97/435), and 35.63% (155/435) were of unknown etiology. Of the jaundiced infants, 19.54% (85/435) had G6PD deficiency, while only 10.23% (70/684) of non-jaundiced infants had G6PD deficiency; this difference was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the hemoglobin levels in the jaundiced infants with G6PD deficiency (146.85 ± 24.88 g/L) were lower than those without G6PD deficiency (156.30 ± 22.07 g/L) (P = 0.001). 65 jaundiced infants with G6PD deficiency underwent G6PD mutation testing, and six different genotypes were identified, including c.95A > G, c.392G > T, c.1024C > T, c.1311C > T, c.1376G > T, c.1388G > A, c.871G > A/c.1311C > T, c.392G > T/c.1388G > A, and c.1376G > T/c.1311C > T.65iciency. Conclusion: In newborns in Yangjiang, G6PD deficiency, infection, and neonatal hemolytic disease were identified as the main causes of hyperbilirubinemia and acute bilirubin encephalopathy. Specifically, Hemolytic factors in infants with G6PD deficiency may lead to reduced hemoglobin and increased bilirubin levels in jaundiced infants.

RESUMO

The World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020. The Delta variant became the main epidemic strain on 11 May 2021. Vaccines were proven highly effective in controlling hospitalization and deaths associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections. Real data on vaccine efficacy against B.1.617.2 infection in the Chinese population were currently limited. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of inactivated vaccine injection and immunoglobulin (Ig) G levels in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity. This retrospective study included patients with COVID-19 in Xi'an Chest Hospital from December 2021 to January 2022. The protective effect of inactivated vaccine injection and IgG levels on COVID-19 severity was analyzed using multiple logistic regressions. A total of 580 patients were included in the study, of whom 158 (27.24%) were mild, 412 (71.03%) were moderate, 5 (0.9%) were severe, and 5 (0.86%) were critical. Severe case (including severe and critical) rates were 1.72% (10/580). Compared with the unvaccinated group, the vac+IgG- group had a 0.21 (0.02-2.05)-fold risk of suffering from severe cases, and the vac+IgG+ group had a 0.05 (0-0.63)-fold risk of suffering from severe cases. Of the 10 severe cases, 8 were older than 60 years, 8 were men, 8 had underlying diseases, 6 were in the unvaccinated group, and 2 were in the vac+IgG- group. Vaccination and sufficient IgG antibody production can protect patients with COVID-19 from severe cases. Booster vaccine injection can produce a stronger immune response and protection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe hemodynamic characteristics in a series of patients with myocardial injury caused by severe COVID-19-related pneumonia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We continuously collected clinical data from severe COVID-19-related pneumonia patients from the West Campus of Union Hospital in Wuhan and Dongguan People's Hospital in Dongguan to explore the prevalence of myocardial injury and hemodynamic characteristics after circulatory failure. Doppler ultrasound and PiCCO2 were used to evaluate the hemodynamics of each patient, and arterial blood gas analysis was performed at the same time. Pearson correlation analysis was used to clarify the relationship between the parameters. RESULTS: A total of 376 patients were observed during the study period. Eighty-seven patients had myocardial injury after admission, and the mean time of myocardial injury after admission was 6 (2, 30) days, from which 16 patients developed hemodynamic instability and 15 died of cardiogenic shock or combined with MODS. Cardiac echocardiography found that the LVEF of all patients was in the normal range and that diastolic function was slightly to moderately impaired. The PiCCO2 data showed that the GEF was significantly decreased in all patients. The dpmx was in normal range. EVLWI, SVRI and GEDI were significantly increased in most patients. Pearson correlation analysis showed that cTNI was significantly related to BNP at hemodynamic instability (r = 0.662, p = 0.005); GEF was related to EVLWI (r = -0.572, p = 0.021) and LAC (r = 0.692, p = 0.003); and EVLWI was affected by LVEF (r = -0.564, p = 0.023), LVDF (r = -0.734, p = 0.001) and PVPI (r = -0.524, p = 0.037). CONCLUSION: Hemodynamic status after myocardial injury and cardiogenic shock caused by severe COVID-19-related pneumonia was characterized by cardiac preload and increased EVLWI, accompanied by a decline in GEF.

RESUMO

The growth and harvest of crops are closely related to photosynthesis and plants have strong absorption of red and blue light, in which red light has helminthic function. So it is very meaningful to transform the rest light in the vertical element of sunlight into red and blue light. The authors can simulate artificial light environment in order to develop green agriculture and increase production of plants. As we all know, rare-earth doped Eu3+ glass materials have wavelength conversion function. Based on the two views of the above, in this paper, the authors have prepared doped Eu3+ cadmium aluminium silicate glasses by high temperature solid-state reaction method. The absorption spectra, excitation spectra, emission spectra are obtained by experiment at room temperature, in which have strong red and blue emissions. Gain the best concentration of doping corresponding to the strongest absorption peak. The charge-transfer band (CT band)is moved to 320 nm (red shift)due to the addition of Cd2+. By changing alkali metal ions, we can adjust and mix different intensity of blue light according to the demand. Based on J-O theory, we can gain the structure order of samples by calculating intensity parameter omega2 and omega4.

RESUMO

Massive Multiple Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) have increased in popularity among children, juveniles, and adults since MMORPGs' appearance in this digital age. MMORPGs can be applied to enhancing language learning, which is drawing researchers' attention from different fields and many studies have validated MMORPGs' positive effect on language learning. However, there are few studies on the underlying behavioral or neural mechanism of such effect. This paper reviews the educational application of the MMORPGs based on relevant macroscopic and microscopic studies, showing that gamers' overall language proficiency or some specific language skills can be enhanced by real-time online interaction with peers and game narratives or instructions embedded in the MMORPGs. Mechanisms underlying the educational assistant role of MMORPGs in second language learning are discussed from both behavioral and neural perspectives. We suggest that attentional bias makes gamers/learners allocate more cognitive resources toward task-related stimuli in a controlled or an automatic way. Moreover, with a moderating role played by activation of reward circuit, playing the MMORPGs may strengthen or increase functional connectivity from seed regions such as left anterior insular/frontal operculum (AI/FO) and visual word form area to other language-related brain areas.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To understand the incidence and trend of malaria in Xuzhou City, so as to provide the evidence for formulating the malaria control measures. METHODS: The information of network reported malaria cases and epidemiological data were collected and analyzed statistically in Xuzhou City from 2010-2013. RESULTS: A total of 109 malaria cases were reported by the special report systems and the network report system in Xuzhou City from 2010 to 2013, in which there were 44 cases (40.37%) of vivax malaria, 62 cases (56.88%) of falciparum malaria, 2 cases (1.83%) of quartan malaria, 1 case (0.92%) of ovale malaria. The latter three were all imported from other countries. Totally 93 cases (85.32%) were confirmed by laboratory, and other 16 cases (14.68%) were diagnosed clinically. There was the incidence throughout the year and there were no obvious seasonal characteristics. The positive rate of blood test in the floating population was significantly higher than that of the local residents (Χ2 = 868.23, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The malaria endemic situation is in the steady decline period in Xuzhou City. The local infections decrease significantly but the imported falciparum malaria cases increase year by year. Therefore, the management for floating population and fever patients should be strengthened.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To understand the situation of Toxoplasma gondii infection among pregnant women in Jiangsu Province. METHODS: The pregnant women from 7 cities in Jiangsu Province were involved in this survey and the information was recorded according to the request of unified admission information of the case questionnaire of toxoplasmosis in Jiangsu Province. The specific antibodies IgM and IgG to Toxoplasma gondii in sera of these pregnant women were tested by ELISA. RESULTS: The specific antibody IgM to Toxoplasma gondii of all the respondents was negative. The positive rate of IgG was 3.98% (43/1 081), which was little different from the control group's 2.27% (4/176), and every city shared a similar positive rate. The positive rate of IgG of early pregnant women was 3.78%, which was also not obviously different from the 4.17% appearing in mid and late pregnant women. The respondents who previously had pathological abortions did not show positive IgG. Only 1.84% (8/435) of pregnant women had had the examinations related to Toxoplasma gondii before this survey. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of Toxoplasma gondii infection is low among pregnant women in Jiangsu Province. The situations in different areas are not far from each other.
