Background: Mental health research is essential in the implementation of evidence-based interventions. This can be impeded by unavailability or limited access to local evidence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Malawi. Aim: The aim of this systematic mapping was to describe the availability, extent and distribution of mental health research conducted in Malawi. Setting: The study was conducted at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Malawi. Methods: A systematic search of four electronic databases from inception to September 2021 was carried out. All published and unpublished mental health studies in all languages were eligible for inclusion. Studies were screened against inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data were extracted, analysed and presented in tables and as a narrative synthesis. Results: Cross-sectional studies (33.6%, n = 76) were found to be the most common study design for mental health research in Malawi. More studies were conducted on women (21.2%, n = 48) compared to men (1.3%, n = 3). Mental health research was concentrated in the southern region of the country (44.8%, n = 120) and in the three cities of Lilongwe (17.9%, n = 48), Blantyre (16.4%, n = 44) and Zomba (9.0%, n = 24). Conclusion: This systematic mapping suggests that there are few studies on mental health in Malawi which are not equally distributed across the country. There is a pressing need to conduct more mental health research using robust designs across disciplines. Contribution: Research on mental health is urgently needed to produce culturally acceptable data in Malawi.

Ensuring primary healthcare (PHC) accessibility to older people with multimorbidity is vital in preventing unnecessary health deterioration. However, older people ≥50 y of age in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face challenges in effectively accessing and utilizing PHC. A systematic review was conducted adopting the Andersen-Newman theoretical framework for health services utilization to assess evidence on factors that affect access to PHC by older people. This framework predicts that a series of factors (predisposing, enabling and need factors) influence the utilization of health services by people in general. Seven publications were identified and a narrative analytical method revealed limited research in this area. Facilitating factors included family support, closeness to the PHC facility, friendly service providers and improved functional status of the older people. Barriers included long distance and disjointed PHC services, fewer health professionals and a lack of person-centred care. The following needs were identified: increasing the number of health professionals, provision of PHC services under one roof and regular screening services. There is a need for more investment in infrastructure development, coordination of service delivery and capacity building of service providers in LMICs to improve access and utilization of PHC services for older people.

INTRODUCTION: The care of children with cancer is a highly specialised field which requires well-educated, trained and dedicated nurses to provide high-quality care. In low/middle-income countries, the survival rate of children with cancer is low as compared with that of high-income countries due to the limited number of specialised oncology healthcare professionals, especially nurses. To address this problem, a number of paediatric oncology education and training programmes have been developed for nurses. The objective of this scoping review is to describe the existing literature focusing on paediatric oncology nursing education and training programmes; to map the content, delivery methods, duration and mode of assessment. METHODS: The review will include articles published in English, from 2012 to 2022, that describe a paediatric oncology nursing education programme, from any setting. The review will follow Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews guidelines. A systematic search of literature will be performed in CINAHL, Dimensions, Embase, PubMed and Scopus. A two-stage standardised screening process will be employed to evaluate eligibility of the articles. All abstracts that will be considered relevant will be reviewed in full text form by the two reviewers independently. Conflicts will be resolved by consensus of all reviewers through a meeting. Data will be extracted by two independent reviewers using a developed data extraction tool. The results will be reported in extraction tables and diagrams with a narrative summary. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This scoping review is part of the multiphase study which obtained ethical clearance from College of Medicine Research Ethics Committee in Malawi and Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. The scoping review will be published in a peer reviewed journal. The findings will also be presented at national and international conferences.
