RESUMO
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High blood pressure (BP) at presentation is associated with poor outcomes in acute ischaemic stroke, but serial BP measurements may better delineate the clinical implications of BP. The aim was to investigate the association between various BP parameters and functional outcomes in acute ischaemic stroke patients treated with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). METHODS: This study reports a retrospective analysis of a prospective registry of a comprehensive stroke centre. Patients treated with EVT due to large vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation were enrolled. BP was measured hourly during the first 24 h after admission. Associations of various BP parameters, including BP variability, with functional outcomes at 3 months, including good outcomes (modified Rankin Scale score of 0-2), were analysed. RESULTS: Of the 378 enrolled patients (mean age 70 ± 11 years, male 54.2%), 313 (82.8%) achieved successful reperfusion after EVT, and 149 (39.4%) had good outcomes at 3 months. Higher mean systolic BP [each 10 mmHg increase, odds ratio 0.82 (0.69-0.97)] and higher systolic successive variation (SV) [each 10% increase, odds ratio 0.37 (0.18-0.76)] were associated with a reduced likelihood of achieving good outcomes. In addition, reperfusion status after EVT moderated the influence of higher systolic SV on good outcomes (Pint = 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results showed that a higher mean systolic BP and systolic SV during the first 24 h of EVT reduced the likelihood of good outcomes at 3 months. The effects of these parameters on outcomes are more substantial amongst patients with successful reperfusion after EVT, suggesting that different BP control strategies should be employed according to reperfusion status.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health has convened the Advisory Group on Antibiotic Stewardship Programme in Primary Care (the Advisory Group) to formulate guidance notes and strategies for optimising judicious use of antibiotics and enhancing the Antibiotic Stewardship Programme in Primary Care. Acute pharyngitis is one of the most common conditions among out-patients in primary care in Hong Kong. Practical recommendations on the diagnosis and antibiotic treatment of acute streptococcal pharyngitis are made by the Advisory Group based on the best available clinical evidence, local prevalence of pathogens and associated antibiotic susceptibility profiles, and common local practice.

BACKGROUND: The modified Marsh and Schnider pharmacokinetic models for propofol consistently produce negatively and positively biased predictions in underweight patients, respectively. We aimed to develop a new pharmacokinetic model of propofol in underweight patients. METHODS: Twenty underweight (BMI<18.5 kg m-2) patients aged 20-68 yr were given an i.v. bolus of propofol (2 mg kg-1) for induction of anaesthesia. Anaesthesia was maintained with a zero-order infusion (8 mg kg-1 h-1) of propofol and target-controlled infusion of remifentanil. Arterial blood was sampled at preset intervals. A population pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using non-linear mixed effects modelling. The time to peak effect (tpeak, maximally reduced bispectral index) was measured in 28 additional underweight patients receiving propofol 2 mg kg-1. RESULTS: In total, 455 plasma concentration measurements from the 20 patients were used to characterise the pharmacokinetics of propofol. A three-compartment mammillary model well described the propofol concentration time course. BMI and lean body mass (LBM) calculated using the Janmahasatian formula were significant covariates for the rapid peripheral volume of distribution and for the clearance of the final pharmacokinetic model of propofol, respectively. The parameter estimates were as follows: V1(L)=2.02, V2(L)=12.9(BMI/18.5), V3(L)=139, Cl (Lâ min-1)=1.66(LBM/40), Q1 (Lâ min-1)=1.44, Q2 (Lâ min-1)=0.87+0.0189×(LBM-40). The median tpeak of propofol was 1.32 min (n=48). CONCLUSIONS: A three-compartment mammillary model can be used to administer propofol via target effect-site concentration-controlled infusion of propofol in underweight patients. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: KCT0001760.

The CC chemokine eotaxin contributes to epithelium-induced inflammation in airway diseases such as asthma. Eupatilin (5,7-dihydroxy-3',4',6'-trimethoxyflavone), a bioactive component of Artemisia asiatica Nakai (Asteraceae), is reported to inhibit the adhesion of eosinophils to bronchial epithelial cells. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism of eupatilin-induced attenuation of bronchial epithelium-induced inflammation. In this study, we investigated the effect of eupatilin on expression of eotaxin-1 (CCL11), a potent chemoattractant for eosinophils. Eupatilin significantly inhibited eotaxin expression in bronchial epithelial cells stimulated with TNF-α, while NF-κB and IκBα kinase (IKK) activities declined concurrently. Eupatilin also inhibited mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activity; however, all of these anti-inflammatory activities were reversed by MAPK overexpression. In contrast, eupatilin did not affect the signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) signalling in bronchial epithelial cells stimulated with IL-4. Furthermore, eupatilin significantly attenuated TNF-α-induced eosinophil migration. These results suggest that the eupatilin inhibits the signalling of MAPK, IKK, NF-κB and eotaxin-1 in bronchial epithelial cells, leading to inhibition of eosinophil migration.

BACKGROUND: Few reports discuss the optimal management of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) before scheduled stem cell transplantation (SCT), who then proceed with transplantation. METHODS: We found 13 patients with TB before SCT (proven, n = 9; probable, n = 3; possible, n = 1) in the medical records of our institution. RESULTS: Most of the patients had pulmonary TB (n = 8; disseminated, n = 2; extrapulmonary, n = 3). Eight of 9 patients with proven disease had SCT after at least 100 days of anti-tuberculous medication, ranging from 103 to 450 days. None of those patients suffered TB-related events after SCT. However, 1 patient with proven pulmonary TB who underwent SCT after only 40 days of anti-tuberculous therapy subsequently died of TB meningitis. Patients with possible and probable disease had their transplants after 6-176 days of anti-tuberculous medication, and all were alive at the time of analysis. The entire duration of anti-tuberculous medication was 12 months in most cases. With a follow-up duration ranging from 0.7 to 87.5 months, 4 patients died, but TB was the cause of death in only 1 case. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, for proven cases of TB, SCT after >100 days of anti-tuberculous medication is probably feasible and safe, in terms of TB control, in patients with various hematologic diseases.

BACKGROUND: The healthcare water environment is a potential reservoir of carbapenem-resistant organisms (CROs). AIM: To report the role of the water environment as a reservoir and the infection control measures applied to suppress a prolonged outbreak of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing Serratia marcescens (KPC-SM) in two intensive care units (ICUs). METHODS: The outbreak occurred in the ICUs of a tertiary hospital from October 2020 to July 2021. Comprehensive patient contact tracing and environmental assessments were conducted, and a case-control study was performed to identify factors associated with the acquisition of KPC-SM. Associations among isolates were assessed via pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Antibiotic usage was analysed. FINDINGS: The outbreak consisted of two waves involving a total of 30 patients with KPC-SM. Multiple environmental cultures identified KPC-SM in a sink, a dirty utility room, and a communal bathroom shared by the ICUs, together with the waste bucket of a continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) system. The genetic similarity of the KPC-SM isolates from patients and the environment was confirmed by PFGE. A retrospective review of 30 cases identified that the use of CRRT and antibiotics was associated with acquisition of KPC-SM (P < 0.05). There was a continuous increase in the use of carbapenems; notably, the use of colistin has increased since 2019. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that CRRT systems, along with other hospital water environments, are significant potential sources of resistant micro-organisms, underscoring the necessity of enhancing infection control practices in these areas.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment for allergic rhinitis. METHODS: This study was a multicenter, randomized, parallel-controlled study. Participants were randomized to either the active acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or waitlist groups. The active and sham acupuncture groups received acupuncture treatment three times per week for 4 weeks. In the sham group, minimal acupuncture at nonacupuncture points was used. The waitlist group did not receive any acupuncture treatment. RESULTS: Of the 238 participants, 97, 94, and 47 individuals were assigned to the active acupuncture, sham acupuncture, and waitlist group, respectively. After the treatment, the difference in the total nasal symptom score (TNSS) was significantly reduced in the active acupuncture group compared with the sham acupuncture (difference: -1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.96, -0.09, P = 0.03) and waitlist (difference: -2.49, 95% CI: -3.68, -1.29, P < 0.0001). The active acupuncture group exhibited a significant change in the total non-nasal symptom score (TNNSS) compared with the waitlist (difference: -0.78, 95% CI: -1.22, -0.34, P = 0.0002), but not the sham acupuncture group (difference; 0.15, 95% CI: -0.21, 0.5, P = 0.56). Both active and sham acupuncture treatments resulted in significant improvements in TNSS and TNNSS compared to baseline. CONCLUSION: Active acupuncture showed a significantly greater effect on symptoms of allergic rhinitis than either sham acupuncture or no active treatment. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis decreased significantly after treatment in the both acupuncture and sham acupuncture groups. Acupuncture appears to be an effective and safe treatment for allergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: In allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT), reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) is known for producing less regimen-related toxicity. However, whether or not RIC reduces the risk for infection and infection-related mortality (IRM) remains controversial. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed infectious episodes and IRMs after allo-SCTs by time period and by the intensity of the conditioning regimen (RIC [n = 81] vs. myeloablative conditioning, MAC [n = 150]). RESULTS: The cumulative incidence of any kind of infection was lower in the RIC group through the entire period (72% vs. 87%; P = 0.007). The onset of infections was deferred in the RIC group as compared with the MAC group (P = 0.012). Bacteremia occurred less frequently in the RIC group through the entire period (5% vs. 14%; P = 0.044). However, the incidences of cytomegalovirus reactivation and disease, herpes zoster, virus-associated hemorrhagic cystitis, and invasive fungal infection were not different between the two groups. Furthermore, there was no difference in relapse-free survival and IRM between the two conditioning regimens. CONCLUSION: Careful monitoring and appropriate preventive/therapeutic strategies for infectious complications, comparable to those for allo-SCT recipients with MAC, should also be applied to those with RIC, especially after engraftment.

The solution combustion process is used to synthesize Fe1.9925P0.0075O3 nano-powders. The sintered Fe1.9925P0.0075O3 bodies are alpha-Fe2O3-based single phase with the rhombohedral structure. The electrical conductivity increases with an increase in sintering temperature because of an increase in grain size and density. The absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient escalates with an increase in sintering temperature up to 1000 degrees C, and then decreases with a further rise in its sintering temperature. The Fe1.9925P0.0075O3 sintered at 1000 degrees C shows the highest power factor, i.e., 1.39 x 10(-5) W m(-1) K(-2) at 700 degrees C.

We investigated the inhibition of lipid oxidation of raw chicken patties by the antioxidants ascorbic acid (Aa), ganghwayakssuk extracts (GE), and their combination (Aa + GE). All antioxidant combinations were effective at delaying lipid oxidation compared with the control or Aa. A combination of Aa + GE (0.05% Aa + 0.2% GE) was the most effective for delaying lipid oxidation (TBA reactive substances, conjugated dienes, and peroxide formation). The color values of all samples were significantly affected by adding GE. Additionally, the redness, color difference, and hue values of all treatments, except for Aa, were lower than those of the control as the amount of GE increased. The total viable bacterial counts of samples with GE 0.2 and Aa + GE 0.2 were significantly affected during storage (P < 0.05). The results suggest that adding an antioxidant combination reduced the oxidative stress and microbial growth of raw chicken patties stored for 12 d under normal refrigeration temperature, which may extend the shelf life of chicken patties.

BACKGROUNDS: Juxtacortical spots on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images can be frequently detected in patients with migraine. However, the origins of the cerebral lesions (including juxtacortical spots on FLAIR images) found in the previous studies are not known. We sought to investigate the association between juxtacortical spots on FLAIR images and right-to-left shunt (RLS) in migraine patients. METHODS: Juxtacortical spots on FLAIR images were arbitrarily defined as small areas of hyperintensities in the juxtacortex and cortico-subcortical junction. The presence of RLS was examined by a transcranial Dopper (TCD) with the agitated saline test. The degree of RLS was categorized into four grades according to the number of microemboli: no shunt, <10 microbubbles (MB), >10 MB single spots pattern, and >10 MB shower/curtain pattern. We compared the results for migraine patients (n = 49) with those for healthy controls (n = 49). RESULTS: Juxtacortical spots on FLAIR images occurred in 38/98 subjects; of them, 27/49 (55.1%) had migraines and 11/49 (22.2%) were healthy controls (P = 0.002). The independent factors associated with juxtacortical spots on FLAIR images were female, migraine patients, and RLS by multivariate analysis. In migraine patients, RLS was independently associated with juxtacortical spots on FLAIR images. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that juxtacortical spots on FLAIR images were frequently found in migraine patients and might be associated with the presence of RLS in those patients. Further studies are needed to assess whether juxtacortical spots have clinical implications in patients with migraine.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Because hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is associated with morbidity and mortality, we need a better understanding of the factors that predict HT after ischaemic stroke. HT is a well-known factor that limits the use of thrombolytics and it negates the effect of treatment. This study investigated whether a high serum ferritin level is associated with HT in acute ischaemic stroke. METHODS: Seven hundred and fifty-two consecutive patients with acute ischaemic stroke within 24 h after a vascular event were enrolled. HT was diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) and the HT was classified into hemorrhagic infarction (HI) type 1, 2 and parenchymal hematoma (PH) type 1, 2. HT was also classified into no HT, asymptomatic HT, minor symptomatic HT (sHT), and major sHT. RESULTS: Computed tomography or MR showed HT in 90 patients (HI in 58 and PH in 32; asymptomatic in 53, minor symptomatic in 23 and major symptomatic in 14). The ferritin levels were higher in the patients who developed HT, PH and sHT. After adjustment for confounding variables, multivariate analysis showed that a high ferritin level remained an independent predictor of HT in the patients with acute ischaemic stroke (P < 0.001). Serum ferritin levels higher than 171.8 ng/ml were independently associated with sHT. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that a high ferritin level is an important predictor of HT, PH, and sHT in patients with acute ischaemic stroke. Lowering the ferritin level with iron-modifying agents or using free radical scavengers could be helpful to prevent HT in ischaemic stroke.

DA-6034 is a synthetic derivative of eupatilin, a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of DA-6034 on the interactions between IκB kinase (IKK) and heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90), and activation of the nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) signalling pathway in human gastric epithelial cells infected with Helicobacter pylori. MKN-45 gastric epithelial cell line was treated with DA-6034 and H. pylori. DA-6034 significantly inhibited NF-κB activation and upregulated the expressions of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in MKN-45 cells infected with H. pylori. However, DA-6034 did not influence activator protein-1 DNA binding activity in H. pylori-infected gastric epithelial cells. Pretreatment with DA-6034 attenuated the H. pylori-induced increase in IKK activity, and Hsp90 was associated with IKK-α and IKK-γ in MKN-45 cells. Treatment with DA-6034 dissociated the Hsp90 and IKK-γ complex in H. pylori-infected cells, leading to the inhibition of IL-8 expression. These results suggest that the eupatilin derivative 7-carboxymethyloxy-3',4',5-trimethoxy flavone has anti-inflammatory activity in gastric epithelial cells infected with H. pylori through the promotion of the dissociation of the IKK-γ-Hsp90 complex and suppression of NF-κB signalling.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The presence of collateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) flow via the primary collateral pathway is thought to protect against the progression of cerebral ischaemia. However, there have been few reports on early clinical outcomes according to the presence of collateral MCA flow in acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) with internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion. Therefore, we sought to investigate the early clinical outcomes and lesion patterns according to the presence of collateral MCA flows in AIS with ICA occlusion. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of patients with AIS with ICA occlusion consecutively admitted to our stroke center between October 2008 and March 2010. Patients were included if they were admitted within 12 h of symptom onset with AIS and symptomatic ICA occlusion. Collateral MCA flow was defined as the presence of MCA signals from proximal M1 to distal MCA branches ipsilateral to the ICA occlusion by magnetic resonance angiography. Early neurological deterioration (END) was defined as a 4-point increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and persistent neurological deterioration for at least 24 h or newly developed neurological symptoms within 7 days. RESULTS: Sixty-five patients (42 men, 23 women) were finally included. Initial NIHSS scores were significantly lower, and favorable outcomes at 3 months were better in patients with collateral MCA flow than in those without (P < 0.001). Initial lesion patterns were different according to the collateral MCA flow. However, patients with mild AIS might more frequently deteriorate than those with moderate to severe AIS. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, collateral MCA flow reduced initial stroke severity and was associated with favorable outcomes at 3 months but did not seem to protect against END in mild AIS patients with ICA occlusion. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that mild AIS patients with ICA occlusion should be carefully managed because their conditions may deteriorate.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Clinical and radiological features of patients with unclear-onset stroke do not differ significantly from those with known-onset stroke. There is a lack of evidence for the safety and efficacy of thrombolysis in patients with unclear-onset stroke. We sought to provide supportive data on the safety and efficiency of thrombolysis in patients with unclear-onset stroke. METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients with unclear-onset stroke (<3 h of first found abnormal time) from our stroke registry. We performed following protocols for thrombolysis in patients with unclear-onset stroke; initial conventional CT-based intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), repeat MRI during IVT, and then decision to maintain IVT or to perform combined intra-arterial thrombolysis. In addition, we compared clinical outcomes and safety between thrombolyzed and non-thrombolyzed patients. RESULTS: A total of 78 patients with unclear-onset stroke were included. Twenty-nine patients underwent thrombolysis. Thrombolysis (OR, 6.842; 95% CI, 1.950-24.004; P = 0.003) and baseline NIHSS (OR, 0.769; 95% CI, 0.645-0.917; P = 0.003) were associated with favorable outcomes at 3 months in multivariate logistic regression analysis. The frequency of hemorrhagic transformation and symptomatic ICH was not significantly different between the thrombolyzed and non-thrombolyzed patients (34.4% vs. 40.7% and 10.3% vs. 8.2%, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that thrombolysis in unclear-onset stroke could be independently associated with favorable outcomes at 3 months and that thrombolysis based on repeat imaging appears to be safely applied to patients with unclear-onset stroke.

BACKGROUND: Human enteroviruses (HEVs) are a major cause of herpangina, HFMD (hand, foot, and mouth disease), and other neurological diseases in Seoul, Korea. METHODS: A total of 56 specimens from hospitalized patients collected from February to December 2009 (37 females and 19 males) in Seoul were tested for HEV from stool, throat swab, and vesicle swab samples taken from patients with herpangina or HFMD using cell culture and RT-PCR in 2009. By the 1D gene, encoding the VP1 capsid protein, seven different HEV genotypes were detected with Coxsackievirus A2, A4, A5, A9, A16 (CA), Coxsackievirus B1 (CB), and Enterovirus 71 (EV71). The most prevalent genotype was CA16 (6, 10.7%), followed by CA2 (4, 7.1%), CA5 (4, 7.1%), EV71 (2, 3.6%), CA4 (1, 1.8%), CA9 (1, 1.8%), and CB1 (1, 1.8%). The 1D gene sequences of two EV71 strains were closely related with one another (98.5% nucleotide similarity) and belonged to the C4 genotype. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to continuously survey the genetic characteristics of EV71 and CA16 from patients, which will provide useful data that aids in our understanding of HFMD infections in Seoul, Korea and may contribute to future control.

Plate-like grains and porous structure were observed in the sintered Ca(3-x)Cu(x)Co4O9 ceramics. The sintered Ca(3-x)Cu(x)Co4O9 showed a monoclinic symmetry. The electrical conductivity of the Ca(3-x)Cu(x)Co4O9 increased with increasing temperature, indicative of a semiconducting behavior. The added Cu led to a significant increase in the electrical conductivity. The Seebeck coefficient of the Cu-added Ca(3-x)Cu(x)Co4O9 was much higher than that of the Cu-free Ca3Co4O9. The highest power factor (9.99 x 10(-4) Wm(-1)K-2) was obtained for Ca2.76Cu0.24Co4O9 at 800 degrees C.
RESUMO
The sintered Ca(1-x-y)Dy(x)CeyMnO3 bodies were a single phase with a perovskite structure without any impurity phases. The calculated crystallite sizes of the Ca(1-x-y)Dy(x)CeyMnO3 were in the range of 43.3 to 63.3 nm. The composition significantly affected their microstructural and thermoelectric characteristics. The doped Dy led to both an increase in the electrical conductivity as well as the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient, resulting in an enhanced power factor. The highest power factor (5.1 x 10(-4) Wm(-1) K(-2)) was obtained for Ca(0.8)Dy(0.2)MnO3 at 800 degrees C. In this study, we systematically discussed the thermoelectric properties of the Ca(1-x-y)Dy(x)CeyMnO3, with respect to the substitution of Dy and/or Ce for Ca.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether phase angle (PhA) measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and frailty are associated with the outcomes of critical illnesses. DESIGN: A single-center prospective cohort study. SETTING: Medical intensive care unit (ICU) in Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Republic of Korea. PARTICIPANTS: 97 patients who were admitted to the medical ICU. MEASUREMENTS: On admission, PhA was measured by BIA, and frailty was assessed by the Korean Modified Barthel Index (KMBI) scoring system. Patients were classified according to PhA and KMBI scores, and their impact on the outcomes of critical illnesses was evaluated. RESULTS: The patients' mean age was 62.4 ± 16.4 years, and 56 of the patients (57.7%) were men. Having a high PhA above 3.5 at the time of ICU admission was associated with lower in-hospital mortality (adjusted OR 0.42, p = .042), and a shorter duration of ICU stay (5.6 days vs. 9.8 days, p = .016) compared to those with a low PhA. Other indices measured by BIA were not significantly associated with outcomes of critical illnesses. Frailty (KMBI > 60) was associated with more mechanical ventilation days (2.3 days vs. 7.1 days; p = .018). CONCLUSION: Both PhA and frailty are important prognostic factors predicting the outcomes of critical illnesses. Low PhA scores were associated with increased mortality and a longer duration of ICU stay, and frailty was associated with more mechanical ventilation days.

An international intercomparison involving eight national metrology institutes (NMIs) was conducted to establish their current measurement capabilities for determining five selected congeners from the brominated flame retardant classes polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polybrominated biphenyls. A candidate reference material consisting of polypropylene fortified with technical mixtures of penta-, octa- and decabromo diphenyl ether and decabromo biphenyl, which was thoroughly assessed for material homogeneity and stability, was used as study material. The analytical procedures applied by the participants differed with regard to sample pre-treatment, extraction, clean-up, employed calibrants and type of calibration procedure as well as regarding analytical methods used for separation, identification and quantification of the flame retardant congeners (gas chromatography coupled to an electron capture detector (GC-ECD), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the electron ionisation mode (GC-EI-MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the electron capture negative ionisation mode (GC-ECNI-MS), and liquid chromatography-inductive coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS)). The laboratory means agreed well with relative standard deviations of the mean of means of 1.9%, 4.8%, 5.5% and 5.4% for brominated diphenyl ether (BDE) 47, 183 and 209 and for the brominated biphenyl (BB) congener 209, respectively. For BDE 206, a relative standard deviation of 28.5% was obtained. For all five congeners, within-laboratory relative standard deviations of six measurements obtained under intermediate precision conditions were between 1% and 10%, and reported expanded measurements uncertainties typically ranged from 4% to 10% (8% to 14% for BDE 206). Furthermore, the results are in good agreement with those obtained in the characterization exercise for determining certified values for the flame retardant congeners in the same material. The results demonstrate the state-of-the-art measurement capabilities of NMIs for quantifying representative BDE congeners and BB 209 in a polymer. The outcome of this intercomparison (pilot study) in conjunction with possible improvements for employing exclusively calibrants with thoroughly assessed purity suggests that a key comparison aiming at underpinning calibration and measurement capability (CMC) claims of NMIs can be conducted.
