The central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA) has an ancient phylogenetic development and functions relevant for animal survival. Local cells receive intrinsic amygdaloidal information that codes emotional stimuli of fear, integrate them, and send cortical and subcortical output projections that prompt rapid visceral and social behavior responses. We aimed to describe the morphology of the neurons that compose the human CeA (N = 8 adult men). Cells within CeA coronal borders were identified using the thionine staining and were further analyzed using the "single-section" Golgi method followed by open-source software procedures for two-dimensional and three-dimensional image reconstructions. Our results evidenced varied neuronal cell body features, number and thickness of primary shafts, dendritic branching patterns, and density and shape of dendritic spines. Based on these criteria, we propose the existence of 12 morphologically different spiny neurons in the human CeA and discuss the variability in the dendritic architecture within cellular types, including likely interneurons. Some dendritic shafts were long and straight, displayed few collaterals, and had planar radiation within the coronal neuropil volume. Most of the sampled neurons showed a few to moderate density of small stubby/wide spines. Long spines (thin and mushroom) were observed occasionally. These novel data address the synaptic processing and plasticity in the human CeA. Our morphological description can be combined with further transcriptomic, immunohistochemical, and electrophysiological/connectional approaches. It serves also to investigate how neurons are altered in neurological and psychiatric disorders with hindered emotional perception, in anxiety, following atrophy in schizophrenia, and along different stages of Alzheimer's disease.

AIM: This study reports the bilateral association of Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia in monozygotic twins subsequently diagnosed with Wilms tumour (WAGR syndrome). METHODS: Two monozygotic female twins were referred at age 2 months with bilateral corneal opacity. A diagnosis of Peters' anomaly associated to aniridia was made in both eyes of both twins. Physical examination and ultrasonography were carried out at 12 months of age to explore the possibility of WAGR-related anomalies, specifically Wilms tumour. DNA were isolated and subjected to whole exome sequencing. RESULTS: Peters' anomaly associated to aniridia in both eyes as well as bilateral Wilms tumour in both children were diagnosed. Exome analyses showed a large heterozygous deletion encompassing 6 648 473 bp in chromosome 11p13, using Integrative Genomics Viewer and AnnotSV software. CONCLUSION: WAGR syndrome is a rare contiguous gene deletion syndrome with a greater risk of developing Wilms tumour associated with Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia. However, co-occurrence of both anomalies was rarely reported in twins, and never in both eyes of monozygotic twins. Here, we report the bilateral association of Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia in monozygotic twins with WAGR syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of pelvic patterns of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF-concept) on pelvic floor muscles (PFM) recruitment, as well as the electromyographic activity of muscles synergic to the pelvic floor in healthy women. METHODS: Observational study conducted with 31 women aged between 18 and 35 years, with mean age of 23.3 ± 3.2 (22.1-24.4). PFM activity was monitored by surface electromyography during the combination of isotonics technique of four pelvic patterns of PNF-concept (i.e., anterior elevation, posterior depression, anterior depression, and posterior elevation). The electromyographic signal was analyzed using root mean square amplitude. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to analyze differences in PFM activity between types of contraction (i.e., concentric, isometric, and eccentric) and the four pelvic patterns. RESULTS: PFM activity did not differ among the four pelvic pattens. However, PFM activity was significantly different between the combination of isotonics technique and baseline, F(1.6, 48.2) = 71.5; p < 0.000, with a large effect size (partial ƞ² = 0.705). Concentric (22.4 µV ± 1.1), isometric (17.3 µV ± 0.6), and eccentric (15 µV ± 0.5) contractions of combination of isotonics technique increased PFM activity compared with baseline (10.8 µV ± 0.4) in all pelvic patterns. By analyzing the electromyographic activity of the muscles synergistic to the pelvic floor, there is effect of the interaction of the type of contraction, the pelvic pattern of the PNF concept, and the synergistic muscles on the myoelectric activity of the external anal sphincter, F(3.2, 96.5) = 5.6; p < 0.000, with a large magnitude of effect (partial ƞ² = 0.15). In the anterior elevation pattern, the muscles synergistic to the pelvic floor present synergy in phase with the PFM, and in the posterior patterns there was a decrease in the activity level of all synergistic muscles, without changing the activity level of the PFM. CONCLUSION: PFM activity did not differ among the four pelvic patterns of PNF-concept. Nonetheless, the combination of isotonics technique showed a significant effect on PFM compared with baseline, with greater PFM activity during concentric contraction. Pelvic patterns of PNF-concept may be used to increase PFM recruitment in young healthy women.

Background: There is an inverse association between cardiorespiratory fitness and general anxiety levels in adolescents. Obesity also is associated with a higher risk of anxiety in this population. However, little is known about the association between other health-related fitness elements with anxiety symptoms in this population. The authors explored the relationship between health-related fitness and anxiety symptoms in a large sample of Brazilian youth. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study with a sample comprised of 257 school adolescents, who were 136 girls (52.9%) and 121 boys (47.1%). The health-related fitness elements were evaluated by FitnessGram® test and anxiety levels by Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children - 39. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to determine the association between health-related fitness elements and anxiety symptoms in both sexes. Results: In male adolescents, only the cardiorespiratory fitness was significantly associated with anxiety symptoms (F(1, 119) = 6.472; P = 0.012; R2 = 0.052; adjusted R2 = 0.044). In turn, the anxiety symptoms showed an inverse small relationship with cardiorespiratory fitness (r = - 0.227; P < 0.01). However, in female adolescents, no association was found between health-related fitness elements and anxiety symptoms. Conclusion: The level of cardiorespiratory fitness may represent a marker of anxiety in male adolescents.

The posterodorsal medial amygdala (MePD) is a sex steroid-sensitive area that modulates different social behavior by relaying chemosensorial information to hypothalamic nuclei. However, little is known about MePD cell type diversity and functional connectivity. Here, we have characterized neurons and synaptic inputs in the right and left MePD of adult male and cycling female (in diestrus, proestrus or estrus) rats. Based on their electrophysiological properties and morphology, we found two coexisting subpopulations of spiny neurons that are sexually dimorphic. They were classified as Class I (predominantly bitufted-shaped neurons showing irregular spikes with frequency adaptation) or Class II (predominantly stellate-shaped neurons showing full spike frequency adaptation). Furthermore, excitatory and inhibitory inputs onto MePD cells were modulated by sex, estrous cycle and hemispheric lateralization. In the left MePD, there was an overall increase in the excitatory input to neurons of males compared to cycling females. However, in proestrus, the MePD neurons received mainly inhibitory inputs. Our findings indicate the existence of hemispheric lateralization, estrous cycle and sexual dimorphism influences at cellular and synaptic levels in the adult rat MePD.

This review compiles general aspects of the novel coronavirus and COVID-19, further dissects the most recent data on the role of the eye regarding disease transmission and manifestations, and summarizes preventive measures in the particular context of eye care.

The major risk factors to fatal outcome in COVID-19 patients, i.e., elderliness and pre-existing metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), share in common the characteristic of being chronic degenerative diseases of inflammatory nature associated with defective heat shock response (HSR). The molecular components of the HSR, the principal metabolic pathway leading to the physiological resolution of inflammation, is an anti-inflammatory biochemical pathway that involves molecular chaperones of the heat shock protein (HSP) family during homeostasis-threatening stressful situations (e.g., thermal, oxidative and metabolic stresses). The entry of SARS coronaviruses in target cells, on the other hand, aggravates the already-jeopardized HSR of this specific group of patients. In addition, cellular counterattack against virus involves interferon (IFN)-mediated inflammatory responses. Therefore, individuals with impaired HSR cannot resolve virus-induced inflammatory burst physiologically, being susceptible to exacerbated forms of inflammation, which leads to a fatal "cytokine storm". Interestingly, some species of bats that are natural reservoirs of zoonotic viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, possess an IFN-based antiviral inflammatory response perpetually activated but do not show any sign of disease or cytokine storm. This is possible because bats present a constitutive HSR that is by far (hundreds of times) more intense and rapid than that of human, being associated with a high core temperature. Similarly in humans, fever is a physiological inducer of HSR while antipyretics, which block the initial phase of inflammation, impair the resolution phase of inflammation through the HSR. These findings offer a rationale for the reevaluation of patient care and fever reduction in SARS, including COVID-19.

PURPOSE: To investigate the associations between intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements obtained by different tonometric methods and rates of visual field loss in a cohort of patients with glaucoma followed over time. DESIGN: Prospective, observational cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: This study included 213 eyes of 125 glaucomatous patients who were followed for an average of 2.4±0.6 years. METHODS: At each visit, IOP measurements were obtained using Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT), the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) (Reichert, Inc., Depew, NY), corneal-compensated IOP (IOPcc), and the ICare Rebound Tonometer (RBT) (Tiolat, Oy, Helsinki, Finland). Rates of visual field loss were assessed by standard automated perimetry (SAP) mean deviation (MD). Linear mixed models were used to investigate the relationship between mean IOP by each tonometer and rates of visual field loss over time, while adjusting for age, race, central corneal thickness, and corneal hysteresis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Strength of associations (R2) between IOP measurements from each tonometer and rates of SAP MD change over time. RESULTS: Average values for mean IOP over time measured by GAT, ORA, and RBT were 14.4±3.3, 15.2±4.2, and 13.4±4.2 mmHg, respectively. Mean IOPcc had the strongest relationship with SAP MD loss over time (R2 = 24.5%) and was significantly different from the models using mean GAT IOP (R2 = 11.1%; 95% confidence interval [CI] of the difference, 6.6-19.6) and mean RBT IOP (R2= 5.8%; 95% CI of the difference, 11.1-25.0). CONCLUSIONS: Mean ORA IOPcc was more predictive of rates of visual field loss than mean IOP obtained by GAT or RBT. By correcting for corneal-induced artifacts, IOPcc measurements may present significant advantages for predicting clinically relevant outcomes in patients with glaucoma.

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) has been used to treat post-stroke upper limb spasticity (ULS) in addition to physiotherapy (PT). To determine whether rTMS associated with PT modulates cortical and spinal cord excitability as well as decreases ULS of post-stroke patients. METHODS: Twenty chronic patients were randomly assigned to either the intervention group-1 Hz rTMS on the unaffected hemisphere and PT, or control group-sham stimulation and PT, for ten sessions. Before and after sessions, ULS was measured using the modified Ashworth scale and cortical excitability using the output intensity of the magnetic stimulator (MSO). The spinal excitability was measured by the Hmax/Mmax ratio of the median nerve at baseline, at the end of treatment, and at the 4-week follow-up. RESULTS: The experimental group showed at the end of treatment an enhancement of cortical excitability, i.e., lower values of MSO, compared to control group (p = 0.044) and to baseline (p = 0.028). The experimental group showed a decreased spinal cord excitability at the 4-week follow-up compared to control group (p = 0.021). ULS decreased by the sixth session in the experimental group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: One-hertz rTMS associated with PT increased the unaffected hemisphere excitability, decreased spinal excitability, and reduced post-stroke ULS.

The posterodorsal medial amygdala (MePD) is a sexually dimorphic area and plays a central role in the social behavior network of rats. Dendritic spines modulate synaptic processing and plasticity. Here, we compared the number and structure of dendritic spines in the MePD of prepubertal males and females and postpubertal males with and without sexual experience. Spines were classified and measured after three-dimensional image reconstruction using DiI fluorescent labeling and confocal microscopy. Significantly differences are as follows: (a) Prepubertal males have more proximal spines, stubby/wide spines with long length and large head diameter and thin and mushroom spines with wide neck and head diameters than prepubertal females, whereas (b) prepubertal females have more mushroom spines with long neck length than age-matched males. (c) In males, the number of thin spines reduces after puberty and, compared to sexually experienced counterparts, (d) naive males have short stubby/wide spines as well as mushroom spines with reduced neck diameter. In addition, (e) sexually experienced males have an increase in the number of mushroom spines, the length of stubby/wide spines, the head diameter of thin and stubby/wide spines and the neck diameter of thin and mushroom spines. These data indicate that a sexual dimorphism in the MePD dendritic spines is evident before adulthood and a spine-specific remodeling of number and shape can be brought about by both puberty and sexual experience. These fine-tuned ontogenetic, hormonally and experience-dependent changes in the MePD are relevant for plastic synaptic processing and the reproductive behavior of adult rats.

PURPOSE: To present a new methodology for investigating predictive factors associated with development of vision-related disability in glaucoma. DESIGN: Prospective, observational cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred thirty-six patients with glaucoma followed up for an average of 4.3±1.5 years. METHODS: Vision-related disability was assessed by the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) at baseline and at the end of follow-up. A latent transition analysis model was used to categorize NEI VFQ-25 results and to estimate the probability of developing vision-related disability during follow-up. Patients were tested with standard automated perimetry (SAP) at 6-month intervals, and evaluation of rates of visual field change was performed using mean sensitivity (MS) of the integrated binocular visual field. Baseline disease severity, rate of visual field loss, and duration of follow-up were investigated as predictive factors for development of disability during follow-up. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The relationship between baseline and rates of visual field deterioration and the probability of vision-related disability developing during follow-up. RESULTS: At baseline, 67 of 236 (28%) glaucoma patients were classified as disabled based on NEI VFQ-25 results, whereas 169 (72%) were classified as nondisabled. Patients classified as nondisabled at baseline had 14.2% probability of disability developing during follow-up. Rates of visual field loss as estimated by integrated binocular MS were almost 4 times faster for those in whom disability developed versus those in whom it did not (-0.78±1.00 dB/year vs. -0.20±0.47 dB/year, respectively; P < 0.001). In the multivariate model, each 1-dB lower baseline binocular MS was associated with 34% higher odds of disability developing over time (odds ratio [OR], 1.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06-1.70; P = 0.013). In addition, each 0.5-dB/year faster rate of loss of binocular MS during follow-up was associated with a more than 3.5 times increase in the risk of disability developing (OR, 3.58; 95% CI, 1.56-8.23; P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: A new methodology for classification and analysis of change in patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes allowed construction of models for predicting vision-related disability in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To characterize OCT angiography (OCT-A) vessel density of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with unilateral visual field (VF) loss. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 33 patients with POAG with a VF defect in 1 eye (mean VF mean deviation [MD], -3.9±3.1 decibels [dB]) and normal VF in the other eye (mean VF MD, -0.2±0.9 dB) and 33 healthy eyes. METHODS: All subjects underwent OCT-A imaging, spectral-domain (SD)-OCT imaging, and VF testing. OCT-A retinal vascular measurements were summarized as whole image vessel density (wiVD), circumpapillary vessel density (cpVD), and parafoveal vessel density (pfVD). Inter-eye differences in vascular measures, as well as SD OCT retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC) thickness, and rim area measurements in glaucoma and healthy eyes were compared. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) were used to evaluate diagnostic accuracy for differentiating between unaffected eyes of patients with POAG and healthy eyes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Difference in OCT-A vessel density and SD OCT structural parameters between unaffected eyes of patients with POAG with the fellow affected eyes and healthy controls. RESULTS: Mean wiVD in unaffected eyes of patients with POAG (52.0%) was higher than in their fellow affected eyes (48.8%) but lower than in healthy eyes (55.9%; P < 0.001). Mean circumpapillary RNFL (cpRNFL) thickness, mGCC thickness, and rim area measurement in unaffected eyes of patients with POAG (87.5 µm, 87.7 µm, and 1.0 mm2) were also higher than those measurements in their fellow eyes (76.5 µm, 79.5 µm, and 0.8 mm2; P < 0.001) and lower than in healthy eyes (98.0 µm, 94.5 µm, and 1.4 mm2; P < 0.001). The AUROCs for differentiating unaffected eyes of patients with POAG from healthy eyes were highest for wiVD (0.84), followed by mGCC (0.78), cpRNFL (0.77), and pfVD (0.69). CONCLUSIONS: OCT-A measures detect changes in retinal microvasculature before VF damage is detectable in patients with POAG, and these changes may reflect damage to tissues relevant to the pathophysiology of glaucoma. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether OCT-A measures can improve the detection or prediction of the onset and progression of glaucoma.

The objective of this study was to determine the sample size necessary to estimate the mean and coefficient of variation in four species of crotalarias (C. juncea, C. spectabilis, C. breviflora and C. ochroleuca). An experiment was carried out for each species during the season 2014/15. At harvest, 1,000 pods of each species were randomly collected. In each pod were measured: mass of pod with and without seeds, length, width and height of pods, number and mass of seeds per pod, and mass of hundred seeds. Measures of central tendency, variability and distribution were calculated, and the normality was verified. The sample size necessary to estimate the mean and coefficient of variation with amplitudes of the confidence interval of 95% (ACI95%) of 2%, 4%, ..., 20% was determined by resampling with replacement. The sample size varies among species and characters, being necessary a larger sample size to estimate the mean in relation of the necessary for the coefficient of variation.

BACKGROUND: National projections about the increase in the elderly population over 60 years bring with it an increase in the number of people affected by Parkinson's Disease (PD), making it an important public health problem. Therefore, the establishment of effective strategies for intervention in people with PD needs to be more clearly investigated. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to report the effectiveness of exercise on functional capacity and neurobiological mechanisms in people with PD. METHODS: This study is a critical review of the literature. RESULTS: The progressive death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra is described as one of the main physiological mechanisms manifested before PD, directly interfering with motor behavior. However, PD is not only related to motor symptoms, but also to cognitive, autonomic, and mood impairments. Such effects may be attenuated by pharmacological influence, but also evidence suggests that the implementation of regular physical exercise programs may exhibit potential benefits over PD. The synthesis and expression of monoaminergic neurotransmitters can act positively on motor disorders, as well as directly or indirectly influence the neuronal plasticity of the brain, restoring neuronal pathways previously affected. CONCLUSION: Physical exercise contributes effectively to the treatment of PD, and can play a preventive and maintenance role of physical fitness and mental health.

PURPOSE: This paper introduces a surgical technique for the sutureless management of zonular dialysis greater than 120° using a capsular tension segment (CTS) or a modified capsular tension ring (m-CTR; CTR with suturing eyelets) and a haptic removed from a 3-piece polypropylene IOL. METHODS: A CTR is used as normal. Cataract removal is followed by connection of the CTS or m-CTR to the single haptic and created using heat to make a flange in one haptic's extremity. The other extremity is placed in the CTS or m-CTR's central hole. The CTS or m-CTR/flanged-haptic complex is introduced into the capsular bag and aligned with the weakest zonular quadrant. A 30-gauge needle guides the externalization of the free haptic extremity through the adjacent pars plana and creates a flange on the second haptic tip permitting intrascleral fixation of the CTS or m-CTR. RESULTS: The result is a successful IOL implantation with a sutureless technique. CONCLUSIONS: This double-flanged m-CTR/CTS technique allows suture-free option for managing zonular weakness or dialysis while performing cataract surgery.

The posterodorsal medial amygdala (MePD) is responsive to androgens and participates in the integration of olfactory/vomeronasal stimuli for the display of sexual behavior in rats. Adult gonadectomy (GDX) affects the MePD structural integrity at the same time that impairs male mating behavior. At the cellular level, dendritic spines modulate excitatory synaptic transmission, strength, and plasticity. Here, we describe the effect of GDX on the number and shape of dendritic spines in the right and left MePD using confocal microscopy and 3D image reconstruction. Age-matched adult rats were intact (n = 6), submitted to a sham procedure (n = 4) or castrated and studied 90 days after GDX (n = 5). The MePD neurons have a density of 1.1 spines/dendritic µm composed of thin, mushroom-like, stubby/wide, and few ramified or atypical spines. Irrespective of brain hemisphere, GDX decreased the dendritic spine density in the MePD, but induced different effects on each spine type. That is, compared to control groups, GDX reduced (i) the number (up to 50%) of thin, mushroom-like, and ramified spines, and (ii) the size and the neck length of thin spines as well as the head diameter of ramified spines. Besides, GDX increased the number of stubby/wide and atypical spines (up to 140% and 400%, respectively). These data show that GDX promotes a cellular and synaptic reorganization in a spine-specific manner in the MePD. By altering the number and shape of these connectional elements, GDX can affect the neural transmission and hinder the function of integrated brain circuitries in the male brain.

PURPOSE: To determine the time required to detect statistically significant progression for different rates of visual field loss using standard automated perimetry (SAP) when considering different frequencies of testing using a follow-up scheme that resembles clinical practice. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: One thousand seventy-two eyes of 665 patients with glaucoma followed up over an average of 4.3±0.9 years. METHODS: Participants with 5 or more visual field tests over a 2- to 5-year period were included to derive the longitudinal measurement variability of SAP mean deviation (MD) using linear regressions. Estimates of variability then were used to reconstruct real-world visual field data by computer simulation to evaluate the time required to detect progression for various rates of visual field loss and different frequencies of testing. The evaluation was performed using a follow-up scheme that resembled clinical practice by requiring a set of 2 baseline tests and a confirmatory test to identify progression. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Time (in years) required to detect progression. RESULTS: The time required to detect a statistically significant negative MD slope decreased as the frequency of testing increased, albeit not proportionally. For example, 80% of eyes with an MD loss of -2 dB/year would be detected after 3.3, 2.4, and 2.1 years when testing is performed once, twice, and thrice per year, respectively. For eyes with an MD loss of -0.5 dB/year, progression can be detected with 80% power after 7.3, 5.7, and 5.0 years, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides information on the time required to detect progression using MD trend analysis in glaucoma eyes when different testing frequencies are used. The smaller gains in the time to detect progression when testing is increased from twice to thrice per year suggests that obtaining 2 reliable tests at baseline followed by semiannual testing and confirmation of progression through repeat testing in the initial years of follow-up may provide a good compromise for detecting progression, while minimizing the burden on health care resources in clinical practice.

PURPOSE: To compare hemifield differences in the vessel density of the peripapillary and macula in open-angle glaucoma eyes with visual field (VF) defect confined to one hemifield using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 58 eyes of 58 patients with glaucoma with VF loss confined to a single hemifield and 28 healthy eyes. METHODS: Retinal vasculature information was summarized as circumpapillary vessel density (cpVD) and perifoveal vessel density (pfVD). Circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) and macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC) thickness were calculated using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT). Paired and unpaired t tests were used to evaluate differences between the perimetrically affected and intact hemiretinae and healthy hemiretinae. Linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between VF measures with vascular and structural measurements. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Total and hemispheric cpVD, pfVD, cpRNFL, mGCC, and mean sensitivity (MS). RESULTS: Mean cpVD and pfVD in the intact hemiretinae of glaucoma eyes (59.0% and 51.1%, respectively) were higher than in the affected hemiretinae (54.7% and 48.3%, respectively; P < 0.001) but lower than in healthy eyes (62.4% and 53.8%, respectively; P < 0.001). Similar results were noted with cpRNFL and mGCC thickness measurements (P < 0.05 for both). The strongest associations between MS in the affected hemifields were found for cpVD (r = 0.707), followed by pfVD (r = 0.615), cpRNFL (r = 0.496), and mGCC (r = 0.482) in the corresponding hemiretinae (P < 0.001 for all). Moreover, the correlations in the intact hemifields between MS with cpVD and pfVD were higher (r = 0.450 and 0.403) than the correlations between MS and cpRNFL and mGCC thickness measurements (r = 0.340 and 0.290; P values <0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Reduced peripapillary and macular vessel density was detectable in the perimetrically intact hemiretinae of glaucoma eyes with a single-hemifield defect. Vessel density attenuation in both affected and intact hemiretinae was associated with the extent of VF damage in the corresponding hemifields. Optical coherence tomography angiography potentially shows promise for identifying glaucomatous damage before focal VF defects are detectable.

AIMS: To compare the electromyographic signal of different surface electrodes and to identify the channel that presents the highest level of electromyographic activity through the mean and peak of Root Mean Square (RMS). METHODS: Thirty healthy women participated in this study. Each woman completed three collections (on different days) of electromyographic data. Three maximal voluntary contractions of the pelvic floor muscles were requested. The electromyographic signal was recorded by intravaginal probe and surface electrodes placed on the perianal region and on the region immediately below the labia majora. To analyze the signal, an epoch of 500 ms was selected during the second contraction. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by a post hoc Mann-Whitney test was used to compare means and to identify differences. The Bland-Altman method was used to verify the agreement between the measurements. A significance level of P ≤ 0.05 was adopted. RESULTS: There was agreement only between the measurements from perianal electrodes and intravaginal probe. Furthermore, there was no difference between the perianal electrodes and intravaginal probe in RMS mean (P = 0.225) and RMS peak (P = 0.315). However, these electrodes locations presented greater values than the electrodes in the region immediately below the labia majora (RMS mean: P < 0.001; P = 0.016. RMS peak: P < 0.001; P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: The intravaginal probe and the surface electrodes in perianal region are equivalent for healthy nulliparous women. The choice must be done according to the values and preferences of the patient.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health decline is one of the main responsible factors for augments in health care costs, and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Some studies stated physical exercise is useful for reduction in cognitive decline and AD. Moreover, a recent review argued that evidence are scarce due to few studies published and lack of configuration information of exercise protocol, such as intensity and duration of exercise, number of sessions and other relevant data, to allow appropriate assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we discussed the possible confounders or factors responsible for these differences and possible neurophysiological mechanisms. RESULTS: Most studies revealed a possible positive association between physical exercise and cognitive assessments. There are inconsistencies in studies design responsible for varying use of cognitive assessments and different assessments of fitness. However, these studies do not fail to provide evidence about the benefits of exercise, but fail to make it possible because of the lack of dose-response information in AD patients. Physical exercise of moderate intensity should be considered as standard recommendation to reduce cognitive decline, probably due to the improvement in neurodegenerative mechanisms, and the increase in neuroplastic and neuroprotective neurotrophic factors. CONCLUSION: Therefore, it is suggested that physical exercise is an important neuroprotective modulator, bringing significant control of the disease and amplifying brain functions.
