RESUMO

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) emerging as promising hole-selective layers (HSLs) are advantageous for facile processability, low cost, and minimal material consumption in the fabrication of both perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and organic solar cells (OSCs). However, owing to the different nature between perovskites and organic semiconductors, few SAMs were reported to effectively accommodate both PSCs and OSCs at the same time. In this regard, a universally applicable SAM that can accommodate both perovskites and organic semiconductors could be desirable for simplifying cell manufacturing, especially from an industrial perspective. In this work, we designed a SAM, TDPA-Cl by introducing chlorinated phenothiazine as the headgroup and linking with anchor phosphonic acid through a butyl chain. The resulting dense SAM was carefully characterized in terms of molecular bonding, surface morphology, and packing density, and its functions in OSCs and PSCs were discussed from the aspects of interactions with the absorber layer, energy level alignment, and charge-selective dipoles. The PM6:Y6-based OSCs with TDPA-Cl SAM as the HSL showed a superior performance to those with PEDOT:PSS. Furthermore, the universality was proved with an efficiency of 17.4% in the D18:Y6 system. In PSCs, the TDPA-Cl-based devices delivered a better performance of 22.4% than the PTAA-based devices (20.8%) with improved processability and reproducibility. This work represents a SAM with reasonably good compromise between the differing requirements of OSCs and PSCs.

RESUMO

Recently, the strategy of polymerized small-molecule acceptors (PSMAs) has attracted extensive attention for applications in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). Although side-chain engineering is considered as a simple and effective strategy for manipulating polymer properties, the corresponding effect on photovoltaic performance of PSMAs in all-PSCs has not been systemically investigated. Herein, a series of PSMAs based on the benzotriazole (BTz)-core fused SMAs with different N-alkyl chains including branched 2-butyloctyl, linear n-octyl, and methyl on the BTz unit, namely PZT-C12, PZT-C8, and PZT-C1, respectively, is presented. Comparative studies show that the size of alkyl chains has a significant impact on the solid-state behavior of PZT polymers, which in turn affects their light absorption and charge transporting capacities, and subsequently the all-PSC performances. When combining with the polymer donor PBDB-T, PZT-C1 affords a champion power conversion efficiency of 14.9%, compared to 13.1% of PZT-C12, and 13.8% of PZT-C8 in the resultant all-PSCs, mainly benefiting from its better crystallinity and the more favorable blend morphology. This work emphasizes the importance of optimizing side-chain substituents on PSMAs for improving the device efficiency of all-PSCs.

RESUMO

Despite the significant progresses made in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) recently, the relatively low short-circuit current density (Jsc) and large energy loss are still quite difficult to overcome for further development. To address these challenges, we developed a new class of narrow-bandgap polymer acceptors incorporating a benzotriazole (BTz)-core fused-ring segment, named the PZT series. Compared to the commonly used benzothiadiazole (BT)-containing polymer PYT, the less electron-deficient BTz renders PZT derivatives with significantly red-shifted optical absorption and up-shifted energy levels, leading to simultaneously improved Jsc and open-circuit voltage in the resultant all-PSCs. More importantly, a regioregular PZT (PZT-γ) has been developed to achieve higher regiospecificity for avoiding the formation of isomers during polymerization. Benefiting from the more extended absorption, better backbone ordering, and more optimal blend morphology with donor component, PZT-γ-based all-PSCs exhibit a record-high power conversion efficiency of 15.8% with a greatly enhanced Jsc of 24.7 mA/cm2 and a low energy loss of 0.51 eV.

RESUMO

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) progressed tremendously due to recent advances in polymerized small molecule acceptors (PSMAs), and their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have exceeded 15 %. However, the practical applications of all-PSCs are still restricted by a lack of PSMAs with a broad absorption, high electron mobility, low energy loss, and good batch-to-batch reproducibility. A multi-selenophene-containing PSMA, PFY-3Se, was developed based on a selenophene-fused SMA framework and a selenophene π-spacer. Compared to its thiophene analogue PFY-0Se, PFY-3Se shows a ≈30 nm red-shifted absorption, increased electron mobility, and improved intermolecular interaction. In all-PSCs, PFY-3Se achieved an impressive PCE of 15.1 % with both high short-circuit current density of 23.6 mA cm-2 and high fill factor of 0.737, and a low energy loss, which are among the best values in all-PSCs reported to date and much better than PFY-0Se (PCE=13.0 %). Notably, PFY-3Se maintains similarly good batch-to-batch properties for realizing reproducible device performance, which is the first reported and also very rare for the PSMAs. Moreover, the PFY-3Se-based all-PSCs show low dependence of PCE on device area (0.045-1.0 cm2 ) and active layer thickness (110-250 nm), indicating the great potential toward practical applications.

RESUMO

Over the past few years, non-fullerene organic solar cells have been a focus of research and their power conversion efficiencies have been improved dramatically from about 6 % to over 14 %. In addition to innovations in non-fullerene acceptors, the ongoing development of polymer donors has contributed significantly to the rapid progress of non-fullerene organic solar cell performance. This Minireview highlights the polymer donors that enable high-performance non-fullerene organic solar cells. We show the impressive photovoltaic devices results achieved by some of important classes of conjugated polymer systems in non-fullerene organic solar cells. We discuss the molecular design strategies as far as developing matching polymer donors for non-fullerene acceptors. We conclude with a brief summary and outlook for advances in donor polymers required for commercialization.

RESUMO

The straightforward palladium-catalyzed synthesis protocol toward spiro-fused perylene diimides is developed. The reaction involves two palladium-catalyzed C-H activations and 4-fold C-C bond formation sequence from readily available precursors. This facile and step-economic approach also provides another convenient access to ethylene-bridged dimer (NDP) and further π-extended spiro system (SNTP). In addition, the molecular structure of spirodiperylenetetraimide (SDP) is illustrated to show a three-dimensional (3D) cruciform configuration, and its absorbance is distinctly red-shifted due to the significant spiroconjugation effect. With combined properties of broadened and intensive absorption, aligned LUMO levels, and unique molecular geometry, the spiro-fused PDI system represents a new kind of high-performance semiconducting framework as the electron acceptor in high-efficiency organic solar cells.

RESUMO

Two kinds of conjugated C3-symmetric perylene dyes, namely, triperylene hexaimides (TPH) and selenium-annulated triperylene hexaimides (TPH-Se), are efficiently synthesized. Both TPH and TPH-Se have broad and strong absorption in the region 300-600 nm together with suitable LUMO levels of about -3.8 eV. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that TPH displays an extremely twisted three-bladed propeller configuration and a unique 3D network assembly in which three PBI subunits in one TPH molecule have strong π-π intermolecular interactions with PBI subunits in neighboring molecules. The integration of selenophene to TPH endows TPH-Se with a more distorted propeller configuration and a more compact 3D network assembly due to the Se···O interactions. A single-crystal transistor confirms that both TPH and TPH-Se possess good electron-transport ability. TPH and TPH-Se acceptor-based solar cells show high power conversion efficiency of 8.28% and 9.28%, respectively, which mainly results from the combined properties of broad and strong absorption ability, appropriate LUMO level, desirable aggregation, high electron mobility, and good film morphology with the polymer donor.

RESUMO

Sequentially deposited organic solar cells (SD-OSCs) have attracted great attention owing to their ability in achieving a more favorable, vertically phase-separated morphology to avoid the accumulation of counter charges at absorber/transporting layer interfaces. However, the processing of SD-OSCs is still quite challenging in preventing the penetration of small-molecule acceptors into the polymer donor layer via erosion or swelling. Herein, solid additives (SAs) with varied electrostatic potential distributions and steric hinderance are introduced into SD-OSCs to investigate the effect of evaporation dynamics and selective interaction on vertical component distribution. Multiple modelings indicate that the π-π interaction dominates the interactions between aromatic SAs and active layer components. Among them, p-dibromobenzene shows a stronger interaction with the donor while 2-chloronaphthalene (2-CN) interacts more preferably with acceptor. Combining the depth-dependent morphological study aided by multiple X-ray scattering methods, it is concluded that the evaporation of SAs can drive the stronger-interaction component upward to the surface, while having minor impact on the overall molecular packing. Ultimately, the 2-CN-treated devices with reduced acceptor concentration at the bottom surface deliver a high power conversion efficiency of 19.2%, demonstrating the effectiveness of applying selective interactions to improve the vertical morphology of OSCs by using SAs with proper structure.

RESUMO

The emerging polymerized small-molecule acceptors (PSMAs) with near-infrared (NIR) absorption have not only significantly boosted the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) but have also exhibited great potential for sensitive NIR polymeric photodetectors (PPDs). However, there is no report regarding PSMAs with photo-response that can approach 1000 nm, which is an important criterion for applications in NIR-responsive all-PSCs and PPDs. Herein, by unidirectionally inserting vinylene segments into a selenophene-rich polymer backbone to improve the electron-donating strength and quinoidal character, an asymmetric PSMA, namely, PY3Se-1V, was developed, which showed an extensively red-shifted absorption approaching 1000 nm. The PBDB-T:PY3Se-1V-based binary all-PSCs achieve a decent PCE of 13.2% and a record-high photocurrent density of 25.9 mA cm-2 due to the significantly broadened photo-response and efficient photon-to-electron conversion. More encouragingly, narrowband photomultiplication (PM)-type PPDs based on poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):PY3Se-1V were developed, delivering an exceptionally high external quantum efficiency of 3680% and a responsivity of 28 A W-1 at an NIR peak of 960 nm under -50 V bias, which is reported for the first time in PM-type PPDs with a response approaching 1000 nm.

RESUMO

A major challenge hindering the further development of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) employing polymerized small-molecule acceptors is the relatively low fill factor (FF) due to the difficulty in controlling the active-layer morphology. The issues typically arise from oversized phase separation resulting from the thermodynamically unfavorable mixing between two macromolecular species, and disordered molecular orientation/packing of highly anisotropic polymer chains. Herein, a facile top-down controlling strategy to engineer the morphology of all-polymer blends is developed by leveraging the layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition. Optimal intermixing of polymer components can be achieved in the two-step process by tuning the bottom-layer polymer swelling during top-layer deposition. Consequently, both the molecular orientation/packing of the bottom layer and the molecular ordering of the top layer can be optimized with a suitable top-layer processing solvent. A favorable morphology with gradient vertical composition distribution for efficient charge transport and extraction is therefore realized, affording a high all-PSC efficiency of 17.0% with a FF of 76.1%. The derived devices also possess excellent long-term thermal stability and can retain >90% of their initial efficiencies after being annealed at 65 °C for 1300 h. These results validate the distinct advantages of employing an LBL processing protocol to fabricate high-performance all-PSCs.

RESUMO

Tuning molecular aggregation via structure design to manipulate the film morphology still remains as a challenge for polymer solar cells based on unfused non-fullerene acceptors (UF-NFAs). Herein, a strategy was developed to modulate the aggregation patterns of UF-NFAs by systematically varying the π-bridge (D) unit and central core (A') unit in A-D-A'-D-A framework (A and D refer to electron-withdrawing and electron-donating moieties, respectively). Specifically, the quantified contents of H- or J-aggregation and crystallite disorder of three UF-NFAs (BDIC2F, BCIC2F, and TCIC2F) were analyzed via UV/Vis spectrometry and grazing incidence X-ray scattering. The results showed that the H-aggregate-dominated BCIC2F with less crystallite disorder exhibited a more favorable blend morphology with polymer donor PBDB-T (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene)-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione)]) relative the other two UF-NFAs, resulting in improved exciton dissociation and charge tranport. Consequently, photovoltaic devices based on BCIC2F delivered a promising power conversion efficiency of 12.4 % with an exceptionally high short-circuit current density of 22.1 mA cm-2 .

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Airway mucus acts as an indispensable protective component of innate immune response against invading pathogens. However, airway mucus hypersecretion, largely consisting of mucin 5AC (MUC5AC), is the leading cause of airflow obstruction and airway hyperresponsiveness that contributes to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are frequently dysregulated in the pathogenesis of COPD, but the definite role of miRNAs in airway mucus hypersecretion is not well understood. METHODS: A cell model of mucus hypersecretion was established in 16HBE cells by treatment with TNF-α. Cell viability and apoptosis were assessed using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and flow cytometry, respectively. The aberrant expression of miR-146a-5p and miR-134-5p was assayed in TNF-α-treated 16HBE cells, and the effect of miR-146a-5p and miR-134-5p on regulating MUC5AC expression was evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and Western blot analysis. RESULTS: TNF-α treatment resulted in a significant decrease of cell viability, and increase of cell apoptosis and MUC5AC expression in 16HBE cells. Additionally, the expression of miR-134-5p and miR-146a-5p was markedly decreased in the cell model. Importantly, forced expression of miR-134-5p and miR-146a-5p significantly repressed TNF-α-induced upregulation of MUC5AC. Mechanistically, although miR-134-5p did not affect 16HBE cells viability and apoptosis, miR-134-5p partially blocked TNF-α-induced MUC5AC expression by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB signaling. On the other hand, miR-146a-5p enhanced cell viability and reduced cell apoptosis. miR-146a-5p also repressed TNF-α-induced MUC5AC expression by inhibiting p38 MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling activation. CONCLUSIONS: The current data demonstrated that both miR-134-5p and miR-146a-5p conferred protection against TNF-α-induced mucus hypersecretion through repressing NF-κB and p38 MAPK signaling, indicating that miR-134-5p and miR-146a-5p may serve as the biomarker for COPD.

RESUMO

The hybridization of different acceptors remains a fertile ground awaiting exploration, to fully promote the properties of both components. The concept of this work is to exploit a new form of fuller-rylene hybrids as promising acceptors by integrating planar rylene dye and spherical fullerene for boosting the power conversion efficiency. The synthesis of the fuller-rylenes via a straightforward synthetic strategy by one-pot Pd-catalyzed cyclization can be scaled-up. Specifically, our strategy allows the supplements and enhancement of absorption in the visible region, much wider structural and electronic variations by installing R1 groups as well as decorating R2 on the perylene core at will, and good processability without compromising the superior characteristics of fullerene. Thus, bay-decorated fuller-rylene S-Fuller-PMI revealed a ground-breaking efficiency as high as 8.01%, even outperforming [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) as a parallel comparison (7.09%). Our exploration paves a new way for the design of high-efficiency acceptors, which are promising alternatives to PC61BM in photovoltaic devices.

RESUMO

Two isomeric N-annulated perylene diimide dimers, namely, p-BDNP and m-BDNP were designed and synthesized via geometric tuning. The distinct molecular geometry and packing arrangements of isomers with almost identical optical and electrochemical properties rendered us an in-depth understanding of the molecular structure-aggregation state-photovoltaic performance relationship. Blended with the commercially available donor PCE-10, p-BDNP and m-BDNP showed distinct differences in photovoltaic performance with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 5.01 % and 4.15 %, respectively.

RESUMO

Three kinds of nonconjugated rigid perylene bisimide (PBI) derivatives based on a triptycene core were designed, synthesized and characterized. The unique three-dimensional (3D) conformation of triptycene could enable formation of polymer with the favorable morphology for organic polymer solar cells (PSCs) by relieving the self-aggregation of rigid PBI units. The low-lying LUMO energy levels of these compounds demonstrated that they are very suitable for use as acceptors in organic solar cells. A higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.15 % was obtained for the blend film using the compound with two PBI units (T-2) as the acceptor and commercial poly[[4,8-bis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophene-2-yl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)-carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]] (PCE-10) as the electron donor.

RESUMO

Two different nonfullerene acceptors and one copolymer are used to fabricate ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). The two acceptors show unique interactions that reduce crystallinity and form a homogeneous mixed phase in the blend film, leading to a high efficiency of ≈10.3%, the highest performance reported for nonfullerene ternary blends. This work provides a new approach to fabricate high-performance OSCs.

RESUMO

Conventional methods to prepare sperm have been amenable to the investigation of outcomes such as rates of recovery and conventional semen parameters. The standard preparation of sperm for assisted reproduction is criticized for its centrifugation steps, which might either recover motile sperm in variable proportions or increase the probability of damage to sperm DNA. An microfluidic system was designed to separate motile sperm according to a design whereby nonmotile spermatozoa and debris flow along their initial streamlines and exit through one outlet-up, whereas motile spermatozoa have an opportunity to swim into a parallel stream and to exit through a separate outlet-down. This chip was fabricated by microelectromechanical systems technology with polydimethylsiloxane molding. The hydrophilic surface, coated with poly (ethanediol) methyl ether methacrylate, exhibits enduring stability maintained for the microchannel. Microscopic examination and fluorescent images showed that the motility of sperm varied with the laminar streams. To confirm the sorting, we identified and quantified the proportions of live and dead sperm before and after sorting with flow cytometric analysis. The results on the viability of a sample demonstrated the increased quality of sperm after sorting and collection in the outlet reservoir. The counted ratio of live sperm revealed the quantity and efficiency of the sorted sperm.

RESUMO

Odor pollution has become a serious environmental problem arising from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants. But the studies on odor intensity and other olfactory evaluations are seriously influenced by the diversity, distinct concentration fluctuation and complex interaction of pollutants. In order to explore the relationship between odor intensity and components concentrations of odor mixture, several typical VOCs in indoor environment were used to simulate odor mixtures. A panel of six sensory assessors was employed to rate the odor intensities of the mixture and its unmixed components. The outcome showed that the presence of an odorant barely influenced the odor intensity of the mixture when its nature logarithm of odor activity value (OAV) was lower than 20% of the mixture's total amount. The application of this method as a pretreatment method for the odor mixture could apparently simplify the studies on odor interaction and olfactory evaluation.
