RESUMO

We examined whether sexual orientation and the Conformity to Feminine Norms (CFN) were predictors of three mental health outcomes: depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. The sample comprised 690 women with different sexual orientations (heterosexual, lesbian and bisexual). Our results suggested that there were five CFN profiles related to sexual orientation, but only the former was a significant predictor of the three mental health outcomes and that women might experience different forms of CFN which in turn can differentially influence women's mental health.

RESUMO

A liquid carbon (l-C) sample is generated through constant volume heating exposing an amorphous carbon foil to an intense ultrashort laser pulse. Time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the C K edge is used to monitor the dynamics of the melting process revealing a subpicosecond rearrangement of the electronic structure associated with a sudden change of the C bonding hybridization. The obtained l-C sample, resulting from a nonthermal melting mechanism, reaches a transient equilibrium condition with a temperature of about 14 200 K and pressure in the order of 0.5 Mbar in about 0.3 ps, prior to hydrodynamic expansion. A detailed analysis of the atomic and electronic structure in solid-density l-C based on time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy and theoretical simulations is presented. The method can be fruitfully used for extending the experimental investigation of the C phase diagram in a vast unexplored region covering the 10^{3}-10^{4} K temperature range with pressures up to 1 Mbar.

This paper focus on physicochemical changes in bio-hydroxyapatite (BIO-HAp) from bovine femur obtained by calcination at high temperatures: 520-620 (each 20 °C) at 7.4 °C/min and from 700 to 1100 °C (each 100 °C) at three heating rates: 7.4, 9.9, and 11.1 °C/min. BIO-HAp samples were obtained using a multi-step process: cleaning, milling, hydrothermal process, calcination in an air atmosphere, and cooling in furnace air. Inductively Couple Plasma (ICP) showed that the presence of Mg, K, S, Ba, Zn, and Na, is not affected by the annealing temperature and heating rate. While Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images showed the continuous growth of the HAp crystals during the calcination process due to the coalescence phenomenon, and the Full Width at the Half Maximum for the X-ray patterns for temperatures up to 700 is affected by the annealing temperature and the heating rate. Through X-ray diffraction, thermal, and calorimetric analysis (TGA-DSC), a partial dehydroxylation of hydroxyapatite was found in samples calcined up to 900 °C for the three heating rates. Also, Ca/P molar ratio decreased for samples calcined up to 900 °C as a result of the dehydroxylation process. NaCaPO4, CaCO3, Ca3(PO4)2, MgO, and Ca(H2PO4)2 are some phases identified by X-ray diffraction; some of them are part of the bone and others were formed during the calcination process as a function of annealing temperature and heating rate, as it is the case for MgO.

We report clinical and biochemical finding from three unrelated patients presenting ONCE (Optic Neuropathy, Cardiomyopathy and Encephalopathy with lactic acidosis and combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency) syndrome. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) of the three patients and the healthy sister of one of them was used to identify the carry gene. Clinical and biochemical findings were used to filter variants, and molecular, in silico and genetic studies were performed to characterize the candidate variants. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) defects involving mutations, deletions or depletion were discarded, whereas WES uncovered a double homozygous mutation in the MTO1 gene (NM_001123226:c.1510C>T, p.R504C, and c.1669G>A, p.V557M) in two of the patients and the homozygous mutation p.R504C in the other. Therefore, our data confirm p.R504C as pathogenic mutation responsible of ONCE syndrome, and p.V557M as a rare polymorphic variant.

AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the ENDORSE study results on thromboprophylaxis prescribing patterns in medical patients attending the Emergency Department (ED) by assessing prescribing appropriateness at admission. METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational, descriptive study was designed and included all adult medical patients admitted from an ED between 20 November 2012 and 26 November 2012 at a large tertiary hospital. Patients to whom anticoagulants were prescribed for therapeutic purposes, patients admitted to Intensive Care Unit or maternity wards were excluded. Prescribing appropriateness was assessed using the Padua Prediction Score (ACCP 2012 guideline) for thromboembolic risk assessment and the NICE model to determine risk of bleeding. The primary end-point was the adequacy of thromboprophylaxis prescribed at the ED according to the ACCP 2012 guideline. RESULTS: A total of 393 patients were examined and 207 patients were included in the study (53.1% were male) with a median age of 75.3 years. The most common diagnosis at admission was related to a respiratory disease (41.1%). In 34.8% of the patients (72 patients), the recommendation of prophylaxis according to ACCP 2012 guideline did not match with the prophylaxis prescribed at admission. Reasons for non-concordance were undertreatment (14.5%) and overtreatment (20.3%). CONCLUSIONS: The adequacy of thromboprophylaxis in high risk patients for VTE has improved compared with the ENDORSE study. However, the percentage of patients with discordant prescriptions remains high. Despite the existence of treatment omissions, this percentage has been overcome by patients overtreated.

An important priority of poultry producers is to guarantee animal welfare during animal production; however, broilers are exposed to unavoidable chronic stress (also known as allostasis) when they are captured, caged, and transported to the processing plant. This antemortem management causes allostatic load, animal injuries, and poor carcass quality. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of an allostatic modulator (AM) on antemortem stress by measuring the appearance and microbiological quality of broiler carcasses. The AM consisted of a liquid formula containing ascorbic acid, acetyl salicylic acid, and electrolytes, administered orally 48 h before shipment to the processing plant. A total of 600 chickens (49-days-old) were used under a factorial arrangement 2 × 2 × 2 [2 commercial hybrid lines, 2 feed withdrawal programs (10 and 16 h), and 2 water treatments (control and AM)]. Each treatment included 25 chickens per pen and was carried out in triplicate. The broilers were shipped, slaughtered, and processed in a commercial processing plant where carcass defects (bruises and broken bones caused by antemortem management), crop pH, and carcass bacterial counts were evaluated in all experimental groups. Broilers under AM treatment showed a reduction in carcass defects (P = 0.015), crop pH (P = 0.0001), coliforms counts (P = 0.014), and total aerobic mesophilic bacteria (P = 0.0001) when compared to the control treatment. The present study indicates that the AM can be used to improve carcass quality in broilers. Our study provides a novel and economic alternative to reduce the allostatic load in broilers.

Because of the natural adaptation of Mexican sheep, the aim of the present study was to identify the presence or absence of gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes (GIN) resistant to benzimidazole (BZ) in both Chiapas and Pelibuey sheep breeds on local farms. Both male and female GIN-infected grazing sheep of the two breeds were selected. Sheep faecal samples were collected to obtain infective larvae (L3). This evolving stage of the parasite was used for taxonomic identification of the genus, based on its morphological characteristics. BZ anthelmintic resistance was evaluated using a nematode-compound in vitro interaction bioassay and the allele-specific polymerase chain reaction technique to detect mutations of residues 198 and 200 on isotype 1 of the ß-tubulin gene. Three BZ-based compounds (febendazole (FBZ), tiabendazole (TBZ) and albendazole (ABZ)) at concentrations of 1, 0.5, 0.25, 0.125, 0.062 and 0.03 mg/ml were used to estimate the anthelmintic efficacy and lethal dose (LD50, LD90 and LD99) of the drugs. Two parasitic nematodes, Haemonchus and Teladorsagia, were identified in both isolates. Also, the proportions of anthelmintic resistance identified in GIN of the two sheep breeds were 68% in isolates from the Chiapas breed and 71.8% in the Pelibuey breed. The specific lethal activity obtained with FBZ was higher than 90%. However, TBZ and ABZ showed a lethal activity lower than 50%. High variability in the discriminating dose values was found among the BZ drugs. For example, FBZ LD ranged from 0.01 to 1.20 mg/ml; on the other hand, TBZ and ABZ required a dose ranging from 0.178 to 759 mg/ml. In addition, amino acid changes of Phe (TTC) to Tyr (TAC) at codon 200 of the ß-tubulin gene, showing resistance to BZ, and no changes at codon 198 Glu (GAA) to Ala (GCA) were observed for both isolates. These results confirmed the presence of a genetic mutation associated with BZ in both Chiapas and Pelibuey nematode isolates.

Variability in response to drug use is common and heritable, suggesting that genome-wide pharmacogenomics studies may help explain the 'missing heritability' of complex traits. Here, we describe four independent analyses in 33 781 participants of European ancestry from 10 cohorts that were designed to identify genetic variants modifying the effects of drugs on QT interval duration (QT). Each analysis cross-sectionally examined four therapeutic classes: thiazide diuretics (prevalence of use=13.0%), tri/tetracyclic antidepressants (2.6%), sulfonylurea hypoglycemic agents (2.9%) and QT-prolonging drugs as classified by the University of Arizona Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics (4.4%). Drug-gene interactions were estimated using covariable-adjusted linear regression and results were combined with fixed-effects meta-analysis. Although drug-single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) interactions were biologically plausible and variables were well-measured, findings from the four cross-sectional meta-analyses were null (Pinteraction>5.0 × 10(-8)). Simulations suggested that additional efforts, including longitudinal modeling to increase statistical power, are likely needed to identify potentially important pharmacogenomic effects.

We report on silver nanowires (AgNWs) coated with molecularly imprinted silica (MIP SiO2) for recognition of tryptophan (Trp). The use of AgNWs as a template confers an imprinted material with adequate mechanical strength and with a capability of recognizing Trp due to its nanomorphology when compared to spherical microparticles with a similar surface-to-volume ratio. Studies on adsorption isotherms showed the MIP-SiO2-AgNWs to exhibit homogeneous affinity sites with narrow affinity distribution. This suggests that the synthesized material behaves as a 1D nanomaterial with a large area and small thickness with very similar affinity sites. Trp release from MIP-SiO2-AgNWs was demonstrated to be dominated by the diffusion rate of Trp as controlled by the specific interactions with the imprinted silica shell. Considering these results and the lack of toxicity of silica sol-gel materials, the material offers potential in the field of drug or pharmaceutical controlled delivery, but also in optoelectronic devices, electrodes and sensors.

Hydatid disease, also known as Echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus. The human cystic variant primarily affects liver and lungs. The pelvic location of the disease is a rare finding usually secondary to a ruptured liver cyst, although it may also appear as a primary lesion affecting the genital organs. Despite its rarity, in endemic areas, pelvic hydatid disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of complex adnexal cystic mass, to make an appropriate treatment strategy. The suspected diagnosis is based on imaging studies and serodiagnostic techniques, in which a new field of research attempts to find a standardized test with sufficient sensitivity and specificity. We report a case of primary pelvic hydatid disease in postmenopausal women operated for suspected ovarian cancer.

Affiliated athletes are frequently subject to higher levels of anxiety due to the intensity of training, competition and many other factors. This anxiety can cause alterations in their health, both physically and mentally, such as menstrual irregularities, eating disorders, etc. In this work we have analysed the anxiety levels of a population of female affiliated paddlers and the possible consequences for their health. The results showed that a third of the female paddlers analysed have a moderate/high risk of suffering from anxiety; and within this group, the less sporting experience the athlete has, the greater the probability is of suffering from anxiety. Moreover, almost half the total of the female paddlers suffers from menstrual dysfunction before an important competition, with this number rising among high performance athletes, even though three out of every four adjust their training schedule to their menstrual cycle. Less-experienced female athletes, who show higher anxiety levels, also present a greater risk of suffering from eating disorders.

This work aimed to study the changes in starch and isolated starch resulting from the conversion of corn to tortilla, focusing on the orthorhombic crystal structure and its association with resistant starch. Scanning electron microscopy images show whole, partially, and completely damaged starch granules in nixtamalized corn, masa, and tortillas. More importantly, whole isolated starch granules were found in nixtamal, masa, and tortillas. Transmission electron microscopy shows the presence of nanocrystals with orthorhombic structures in isolated starch. Some of them remained almost undamaged during the nixtamalization process. The X-ray patterns showed orthorhombic crystals in nixtamal, masa, and tortilla and their isolated starches. The RS increased from 2.61 to 5.31 % from corn to tortilla and from 2.52 to 5.61 % for isolated starches from corn and tortilla during the traditional nixtamalization process. The results suggest that the nanocrystals in corn to tortilla are part of RS2.

BACKGROUND: To examine whether lifetime DSM-IV diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD), including age at onset and number of episodes, is associated with brain atrophy in older persons without dementia. METHOD: Within the population-based Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility (AGES)-Reykjavik Study, 4354 persons (mean age 76 ± 5 years, 58% women) without dementia had a 1.5-T brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. Automated brain segmentation total and regional brain volumes were calculated. History of MDD, including age at onset and number of episodes, and MDD in the past 2 weeks was diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). RESULTS: Of the total sample, 4.5% reported a lifetime history of MDD; 1.5% had a current diagnosis of MDD (including 75% with a prior history of depression) and 3.0% had a past but no current diagnosis (remission). After adjusting for multiple covariates, compared to participants never depressed, those with current MDD (irrespective of past) had more global brain atrophy [B = -1.25%, 95% confidence interval (CI) -2.05 to -0.44], including more gray- and white-matter atrophy in most lobes, and also more atrophy of the hippocampus and thalamus. Participants with current, first-onset MDD also had more brain atrophy (B = -1.62%, 95% CI -3.30 to 0.05) whereas those remitted did not (B = 0.06%, 95% CI -0.54 to 0.66). CONCLUSIONS: In older persons without dementia, current MDD, irrespective of prior history, but not remitted MDD was associated with widespread gray- and white-matter brain atrophy. Prospective studies should examine whether MDD is a consequence of, or contributes to, brain volume loss and development of dementia.

This work focuses on the study of the physicochemical changes that take place during the first stage of ripening of plantain, with particular attention to the changes in the orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals present in this starch, and its relation shift with resistance starch. Significant changes were observed in the proximal analysis of plantain flour. A gradual increase in moisture content was attributed to the high content of crystalline structures and molecules that can be removed by drying. Water activity increased with ripening, which was attributed to the hygroscopic nature of the flours. The protein content increased, and the carbohydrate content decreased, indicating the progress of biochemical reactions. The changes in the fat content are consistent with the hydrolysis and resynthesis of lipids during the ripening process. The obtained results indicate a significant influence of the ripening stage on the physicochemical properties of flour and starch of plantain, which is associated with the occurrence of a climacteric peak on the 4th day of ripening. The hydration properties of plantain flour decreased significantly during the ripening days, consistent with the occurrence of a climacteric peak. Water holding capacity (WHC) and water binding capacity (WBC) were affected by the degree of digestion of native starch granules and protein denaturation during fruit ripening. Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) showed that during ripening the surface of the isolated starches do not suffer any significative damage. X-ray diffraction patterns were used to identify crystalline structures and to study the changes in the crystalline structures. These results showed that the starch contains orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals, which play and important role and which show small structural damage during ripening reflected in a decrease in their relative crystallinity. This is the first time that these nanocrystals have been studied and considered in the ripening process. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the thermal transition in isolated starch. The results indicated that the gelatinization of starch corresponds to the solvation of orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals, and that during ripening there is a decrease in the enthalpy reflecting some crystal structural damage. Pasting properties were studied using a Starch cell for flours and isolated starches, indicating that the pasting profile is governed by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The resistant starch does not show significant changes at this stage of maturation. This starch is the one with the highest resistant starch content reported in the literature (38%). It was hypothesized that the resistant starch is directly related to the amount of whole starch granules, and more importantly, directly related to the number concentration of orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals. Therefore, knowledge of the physicochemical and nutritional properties of plantain and flour at each stage of ripening allows better selection according to industrial applications.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: The validation of a method for recording pharmaceutical interventions measures the instrument's ability to provide consistent values when the same analysis is performed several times. Our aim was to validate the inter-rater reliability of the method used to record pharmaceutical interventions in our hospital. METHODS: We recorded interventions in a database, entering variables related to the patient, treatment and impact of the recommendation. We also recorded the type, cause and clinical significance of the negative outcome associated with use of the medicinal product (NOM). Twenty interventions performed during a 3-year study period (2007-2009) were randomly tested for consistency to analyse the kappa (κ) coefficient statistic of the recommendations as coded by nine senior and junior clinical pharmacists. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: There were 87·8% global consistency for NOM cause, 66·1% for intervention impact and 95·0% for NOM type. Agreement was substantial for 'intervention reasons', with a κ value of 0·74 (95%CI 0·61-0·87), fair for 'intervention impact', with a κ value of 0·24 (95%CI 0·15-0·32) and excellent for 'NOM type', with a κ value of 0·87 (95%CI 0·71-1·00), respectively. Our results are globally good, especially with regard to the analysis of intervention reasons and NOM type, which matches other authors' findings. Furthermore, our validation method is suitable for recording and considering the impact of pharmaceutical interventions. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: We describe a systematic method for clinical pharmacists to record their activities and assess their value. This methodology should help in the development of clinical pharmacy in Spain and should be translatable to other settings.

In Argentina periurban streams frequently receive agricultural, livestock and industrial discharges. Heavy metals have been found in the water column and sediments of numerous water bodies of the pampean region, at levels above the limits established for aquatic life protection. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a contaminant pulse of cadmium discharged into a water-sediment system of different particle sizes, by means of laboratory tests using juveniles and adults of Hyalella curvispina, a native amphipod. We found that the substrate particle size was a determining factor in the toxicity of cadmium and that the adults of H. curvispina were more sensitive than juveniles. We also observed a temporal difference between the two ages for the same type of sediment. Given the nature of the sediments of regional water bodies, it is expected that a discharge of cadmium, even at concentrations as low as those tested here, will affect the survival of native amphipods.

Microalgae are among the most promising of non-food based biomass fuel feedstock alternatives. Algal biofuels production is challenged by limited oil content, growth rate, and economical cultivation. To develop the optimum cultivation conditions for increasing biofuels feedstock production, the effect of light source, light intensity, photoperiod, and nitrogen starvation on the growth rate, cell density, and lipid content of Chlorella minutissima were studied. The fatty acid content and composition of Chlorella minutissima were also investigated under the above conditions. Fluorescent lights were more effective than red or white light-emitting diodes for algal growth. Increasing light intensity resulted in more rapid algal growth, while increasing the period of light also significantly increased biomass productivity. Our results showed that the lipid and triacylglycerol content were increased under N starvation conditions. Thus, a two-phase strategy with an initial nutrient-sufficient reactor followed by a nutrient deprivation strategy could likely balance the desire for rapid and high biomass generation (124 mg/L) with a high oil content (50%) of Chlorella minutissima to maximize the total amount of oil produced for biodiesel production. Moreover, methyl palmitate (C16:0), methyl oleate (C18:1), methyl linoleate (C18:2), and methyl linolenate (C18:3) are the major components of Chlorella minutissima derived FAME, and choice of light source, intensity, and N starvation impacted the FAME composition of Chlorella minutissima. The optimized cultivation conditions resulted in higher growth rate, cell density, and oil content, making Chlorella minutissima a potentially suitable organism for biodiesel feedstock production.

Sorghum has been used to expand snacks such as pop sorghum. However, it is still unknown how the structural changes during the popping affect its rheological and functional properties. This study evaluated the structural changes of popped sorghum starch (PS) and their impact on rheological behavior. Moisture sorghum was adjusted to 11, 15, and 20% before popped. Morphology, X-ray pattern (XRP), infrared spectra (IR), thermal properties, and rheological behavior before and after popping were evaluated. Micrographs showed a honeycomb-like structure in PS. XRP showed partial damage to the orthorhombic crystals of the sorghum starch after PS, while the growth of crystalline lamellae was also generated (13.08 and 20.01°). IR showed structural damage as the signal at 1045 cm-1 disappeared in PS. The IM increased to gelatinization of the starch. The rheological behavior of PS displayed better thermal stability, with the lowest breakdown (25 ± 3.5 cP), setback (253 ± 11.3 cP), and final (1337 ± 5.7 cP) viscosity. The consistency coefficient k and flow behavior index n increase, meaning a loss of the pseudoplastic character. Viscoelastic properties increased in PS, suggesting the formation of cross-links and a stable matrix. Correlation analysis showed a strong relationship between structural changes and the rheological behavior of PS.

The popping process has been widely used as a technique for obtaining snacks. This study evaluated the effect of the popping process on the structural and thermal properties of sorghum. Seven varieties of sorghum were used. Raw sorghum grains were adjusted to 11% moisture and popped at 210 °C for 90 s with hot air. Microstructure, thermal and viscosity properties, and X-Ray and infrared spectrum were measured in raw and popped sorghum. The popping process produced an ordered honeycomb-like structure in the sorghum. The viscosity profile showed an increase in the thermal stability of popped sorghum. DSC measurements showed a starch gelatinization and a second transition about to 145 °C. XRD diffractograms display a reduction in the amplitude of the crystalline orthorhombic structure peaks. Finally, infrared indicated a change in the short-range structure and protein denaturation due to the popping process.
