Carbon isotope composition of tree-ring (δ13 CRing ) is a commonly used proxy for environmental change and ecophysiology. δ13 CRing reconstructions are based on a solid knowledge of isotope fractionations during formation of primary photosynthates (δ13 CP ), such as sucrose. However, δ13 CRing is not merely a record of δ13 CP . Isotope fractionation processes, which are not yet fully understood, modify δ13 CP during sucrose transport. We traced, how the environmental intra-seasonal δ13 CP signal changes from leaves to phloem, tree-ring and roots, for 7 year old Pinus sylvestris, using δ13 C analysis of individual carbohydrates, δ13 CRing laser ablation, leaf gas exchange and enzyme activity measurements. The intra-seasonal δ13 CP dynamics was clearly reflected by δ13 CRing , suggesting negligible impact of reserve use on δ13 CRing . However, δ13 CP became increasingly 13 C-enriched during down-stem transport, probably due to post-photosynthetic fractionations such as sink organ catabolism. In contrast, δ13 C of water-soluble carbohydrates, analysed for the same extracts, did not reflect the same isotope dynamics and fractionations as δ13 CP , but recorded intra-seasonal δ13 CP variability. The impact of environmental signals on δ13 CRing , and the 0.5 and 1.7‰ depletion in photosynthates compared ring organic matter and tree-ring cellulose, respectively, are useful pieces of information for studies exploiting δ13 CRing .

Premature cardiovascular disease and death with a functioning graft are leading causes of death and graft loss, respectively, in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Vascular stiffness and calcification are markers of cardiovascular disease that are prevalent in KTR and associated with subclinical vitamin K deficiency. We performed a single-center, phase II, parallel-group, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (ISRCTN22012044) to test whether vitamin K supplementation reduced vascular stiffness (MRI-based aortic distensibility) or calcification (coronary artery calcium score on computed tomography) in KTR over 1 year of treatment. The primary outcome was between-group difference in vascular stiffness (ascending aortic distensibility). KTRs were recruited between September 2017 and June 2018, and randomized 1:1 to vitamin K (menadiol diphosphate 5 mg; n = 45) or placebo (n = 45) thrice weekly. Baseline demographics, clinical history, and immunosuppression regimens were similar between groups. There was no impact of vitamin K on vascular stiffness (treatment effect -0.23 [95% CI -0.75 to 0.29] × 10-3  mmHg-1 ; p = .377), vascular calcification (treatment effect -141 [95% CI - 320 to 38] units; p = .124), nor any other outcome measure. In this heterogeneous cohort of prevalent KTR, vitamin K supplementation did not reduce vascular stiffness or calcification over 1 year. Improving vascular health in KTR is likely to require a multifaceted approach.

BACKGROUND: Vascular calcification is an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease. Computed tomography (CT) is the gold-standard for detecting vascular calcification. Radial volumetric-interpolated breath-hold examination (radial-VIBE), a free-breathing gradient-echo cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) sequence, has advantages over CT as it is ionising radiation-free. However, its capability in detecting thoracic aortic calcification (TAC) has not been investigated. This study aims to compare radial-VIBE to CT for the detection of TAC in the descending aorta of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) using semi-automated methods, and to investigate the association between TAC and coronary artery calcification (CAC). METHODS: Paired cardiac CT and radial-VIBE CMR scans from ESRD patients participating in 2 prospective studies were obtained. Calcification volume was quantified using semi-automated methods in a 9 cm segment of the thoracic aorta. Correlation and agreement between TAC volume measured on CMR and CT were assessed with Spearman's correlation coefficient (ρ), linear regression, Bland-Altman plots and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Association between CAC Agatston score and TAC volume determined by CT and CMR was measured with Spearman's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Scans from 96 participants were analysed. Positive correlation was found between CMR and CT calcification volume [ρ = 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.45-0.73]. ICC for consistency was 0.537 (95% CI 0.378-0.665). Bland-Altman plot revealed that compared to CT, CMR volumes were systematically higher at low calcification volume, and lower at high calcification volume. CT did not detect calcification in 41.7% of participants, while radial-VIBE CMR detected signal which the semi-quantitative algorithm reported as calcification in all of those individuals. Instances of suboptimal radial-VIBE CMR image quality were deemed to be the major contributors to the discrepancy. Correlations between CAC Agatston score and TAC volume measured by CT and CMR were ρ = 0.404 (95% CI 0.214-0.565) and ρ = 0.211 (95% CI 0.008-0.396), respectively. CONCLUSION: Radial-VIBE CMR can detect TAC with strong positive association to CT, albeit with the presence of proportional bias. Quantification of vascular calcification by radial-VIBE remains a promising area for future research, but improvements in image quality are necessary.

Background Ferumoxytol is approved for use in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, but it can serve as an alternative to gadolinium-based contrast agents. On the basis of postmarketing surveillance data, the Food and Drug Administration issued a black box warning regarding the risks of rare but serious acute hypersensitivity reactions during fast high-dose injection (510 mg iron in 17 seconds) for therapeutic use. Whereas single-center safety data for diagnostic use have been positive, multicenter data are lacking. Purpose To report multicenter safety data for off-label diagnostic ferumoxytol use. Materials and Methods The multicenter ferumoxytol MRI registry was established as an open-label nonrandomized surveillance databank without industry involvement. Each center monitored all ferumoxytol administrations, classified adverse events (AEs) using the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (grade 1-5), and assessed the relationship of AEs to ferumoxytol administration. AEs related to or possibly related to ferumoxytol injection were considered adverse reactions. The core laboratory adjudicated the AEs and classified them with the American College of Radiology (ACR) classification. Analysis of variance was used to compare vital signs. Results Between January 2003 and October 2018, 3215 patients (median age, 58 years; range, 1 day to 96 years; 1897 male patients) received 4240 ferumoxytol injections for MRI. Ferumoxytol dose ranged from 1 to 11 mg per kilogram of body weight (≤510 mg iron; rate ≤45 mg iron/sec). There were no systematic changes in vital signs after ferumoxytol administration (P > .05). No severe, life-threatening, or fatal AEs occurred. Eighty-three (1.9%) of 4240 AEs were related or possibly related to ferumoxytol infusions (75 mild [1.8%], eight moderate [0.2%]). Thirty-one AEs were classified as allergiclike reactions using ACR criteria but were consistent with minor infusion reactions observed with parenteral iron. Conclusion Diagnostic ferumoxytol use was well tolerated, associated with no serious adverse events, and implicated in few adverse reactions. Polyclonal antibodies against Escherichia coli and fluorescent, secondary, antibodies were immobilized on borosilicate glass fibers pre-treated with 3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPS). Light with an average wavelength of 627 nm, emitted by a diode placed at one end of the glass fiber, was detected by an ultrasensitive photodiode with peak sensitivity at 640 nm. Changes in fluorescence, caused by binding of E. coli to the antibodies, changed the net refractive index of the glass fiber and thus the internal reflection of light. These evanescent changes in photon energy were recorded by an ultrasensitive photodiode. Signals were amplified and changes in voltage recorded with a digital multimeter. A linear increase in voltage readings was recorded over 2 h when 3.0 × 107 CFU/ml and 2.77 × 109 CFU/ml E. coli were adhered to the antibodies. Voltage readings were recorded with E. coli cell numbers from 2 × 103 CFU/ml to 2 × 106 CFU/ml, but readings remained unchanged for 2 h, indicating that the limit of detection is 3.0 × 107 CFU/ml. This simple technology may be used to develop a low-cost, portable, fiber-optic biosensor to detect E. coli in infections and may have applications in the medical field. Research is in progress to optimize the sensitivity of the fiber-optic biosensor and determine its specificity.

BACKGROUND: Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor in children and can be divided in different molecular subgroups. Patients whose tumor is classified as a Group 3 tumor have a dismal prognosis. However only very few tumor models are available for this subgroup. METHODS: We established a robust orthotopic xenograft model with a cell line derived from the malignant pleural effusions of a child suffering from a Group 3 medulloblastoma. RESULTS: Besides classical characteristics of this tumor subgroup, the cells display cancer stem cell characteristics including neurosphere formation, multilineage differentiation, CD133/CD15 expression, high ALDH-activity and high tumorigenicity in immunocompromised mice with xenografts exactly recapitulating the original tumor architecture. CONCLUSIONS: This model using unmanipulated, human medulloblastoma cells will enable translational research, specifically focused on Group 3 medulloblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Mobile 3D fluoroscopes have become increasingly available in neurosurgical operating rooms. In this series, the image quality and value of intraoperative 3D fluoroscopy with intravenous contrast agent for the evaluation of aneurysm occlusion and vessel patency after clip placement was assessed in patients who underwent surgery for intracranial aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients were included in this retrospective analysis. Prior to surgery, a 360° rotational fluoroscopy scan was performed without contrast agent followed by another scan with 50 ml of intravenous iodine contrast agent. The image files of both scans were transferred to an Apple PowerMac® workstation, subtracted and reconstructed using OsiriX® free software. The procedure was repeated after clip placement. Both image sets were compared for assessment of aneurysm occlusion and vessel patency. RESULTS: Image acquisition and contrast administration caused no adverse effects. Image quality was sufficient to follow the patency of the vessels distal to the clip. Metal artifacts reduce the assessability of the immediate vicinity of the clip. Precise image subtraction and post-processing can reduce metal artifacts and make the clip-site assessable and depict larger neck-remnants. CONCLUSION: This technique quickly supplies images at adequate quality to evaluate distal vessel patency after aneurysm clipping. Significant aneurysm remnants may be depicted as well. As it does not require visual control of all vessels that are supposed to be evaluated intraoperatively, this technique may be complementary to other intraoperative tools like indocyanine green videoangiography and micro-Doppler, especially for the assessment of larger aneurysms. At the momentary state of this technology, it cannot replace postoperative conventional angiography. However, 3D fluoroscopy and image post-processing are young technologies. Further technical developments are likely to result in improved image quality.

The emergence of an association between gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA) and the rare condition nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) led to a warning in 2006 from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restricting the use of the GBCAs to patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate of >30 mL/min/1.73m(2) . We discuss our experience with a post-FDA restriction presentation of NSF and subsequent patient death in which the prolonged lead-time of ∼5.5 years led to challenges in ensuring a secure diagnosis of NSF and establishing risk exposures. Accurate contemporary records of contrast administration and clinical factors alongside clinical and pathological expertise ensured that we were able to confidently diagnose NSF, despite the length of lead time and confounding factors.

It was the objective of this report to present a case of recurrent aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in which an MCA aneurysm was detected by 3D rotational fluoroscopy in an emergency situation. A 44-year-old woman was admitted from an external department after repeated SAH and temporal ICH. Due to progressive anisocoria and cardiocirculatory instability, she was transferred to the operating room without angiography. After a 3D rotational fluoroscopy baseline scan, another scan with 50 ml of iodine contrast agent was performed. The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data sets were subtracted and reconstructed using the OsiriX® free imaging software. No adverse effect was observed during and after the administration of the contrast agent. The entire procedure from positioning of the fluoroscope to the production of utilizable 3D images was completely integrated into the surgical workflow with an image acquisition time of 2 × 24 s. The configuration of the aneurysm, the aneurysm-carrying vessel, and the distal vessel anatomy were well assessable. This technique quickly supplies images at adequate quality to assess the configuration of an intracranial aneurysm and is a useful diagnostic tool if the patient's critical condition prohibits aneurysm diagnostics by angiography or CT angiography.

The increasing carbon dioxide (CO2 ) concentration in the atmosphere in combination with climatic changes throughout the last century are likely to have had a profound effect on the physiology of trees: altering the carbon and water fluxes passing through the stomatal pores. However, the magnitude and spatial patterns of such changes in natural forests remain highly uncertain. Here, stable carbon isotope ratios from a network of 35 tree-ring sites located across Europe are investigated to determine the intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), the ratio of photosynthesis to stomatal conductance from 1901 to 2000. The results were compared with simulations of a dynamic vegetation model (LPX-Bern 1.0) that integrates numerous ecosystem and land-atmosphere exchange processes in a theoretical framework. The spatial pattern of tree-ring derived iWUE of the investigated coniferous and deciduous species and the model results agreed significantly with a clear south-to-north gradient, as well as a general increase in iWUE over the 20th century. The magnitude of the iWUE increase was not spatially uniform, with the strongest increase observed and modelled for temperate forests in Central Europe, a region where summer soil-water availability decreased over the last century. We were able to demonstrate that the combined effects of increasing CO2 and climate change leading to soil drying have resulted in an accelerated increase in iWUE. These findings will help to reduce uncertainties in the land surface schemes of global climate models, where vegetation-climate feedbacks are currently still poorly constrained by observational data.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of renal perfusion is a crucial part of measuring kidney function. Arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL MRI) is a non-invasive method of measuring renal perfusion using magnetised blood as endogenous contrast. We studied the reproducibility of ASL MRI in normal volunteers. METHODS: ASL MRI was performed in healthy volunteers on 2 occasions using a 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner with flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) perfusion preparation with a steady state free precession (True-FISP) pulse sequence. Kidney volume was measured from the scanned images. Routine serum and urine biochemistry were measured prior to MRI scanning. RESULTS: 12 volunteers were recruited yielding 24 kidneys, with a mean participant age of 44.1 ± 14.6 years, blood pressure of 136/82 mmHg and chronic kidney disease epidemiology formula estimated glomerular filtration rate (CKD EPI eGFR) of 98.3 ± 15.1 ml/min/1.73 m2. Mean kidney volumes measured using the ellipsoid formula and voxel count method were 123.5 ± 25.5 cm3, and 156.7 ± 28.9 cm3 respectively. Mean kidney perfusion was 229 ± 41 ml/min/100 g and mean cortical perfusion was 327 ± 63 ml/min/100 g, with no significant differences between ASL MRIs. Mean absolute kidney perfusion calculated from kidney volume measured during the scan was 373 ± 71 ml/min. Bland Altman plots were constructed of the cortical and whole kidney perfusion measurements made at ASL MRIs 1 and 2. These showed good agreement between measurements, with a random distribution of means plotted against differences observed. The intra class correlation for cortical perfusion was 0.85, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 9.2%. The intra class correlation for whole kidney perfusion was 0.86, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 7.1%. CONCLUSIONS: ASL MRI at 3.0 Tesla provides a repeatable method of measuring renal perfusion in healthy subjects without the need for administration of exogenous compounds. We have established normal values for renal perfusion using ASL MRI in a cohort of healthy volunteers.

The biotransformation potential of three phytosterols (campesterol, stigmasterol and ß-sitosterol) under denitrifying, sulfate-reducing and fermentative/methanogenic conditions was assessed. Using a group contribution method, the standard Gibbs free energy of phytosterols was calculated and used to perform theoretical energetic calculations. The oxidation of phytosterols under aerobic, nitrate-reducing, sulfate-reducing and methanogenic conditions was determined to be energetically feasible. However, using semi-continuously fed cultures maintained at 20-22 °C over 16 weekly feeding cycles (112 days; retention time, 21 days), phytosterol removal was observed under nitrate-reducing and sulfate-reducing conditions, but not under fermentative/methanogenic conditions. Under sulfate-reducing conditions, stigmast-4-en-3-one was identified as an intermediate of phytosterol biotransformation, a reaction more likely carried out by dehydrogenases/isomerases, previously reported to act on cholesterol under both oxic and anoxic (denitrifying) conditions. Further study of the biotransformation of phytosterols under anoxic/anaerobic conditions is necessary to delineate the factors and conditions leading to enhanced phytosterol biodegradation and the development of effective biological treatment systems for the removal of phytosterols from pulp and paper wastewaters and other phytosterol-bearing waste streams.

Deeper responses are associated with improved survival in patients being treated for myeloma. However, the sensitivity of the current blood-based assays is limited. Historical studies suggested that normalisation of the serum free light chain (FLC) ratio in patients who were negative by immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) was associated with improved outcomes. However, recently this has been called into question. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based FLC assessments may offer a superior methodology for the detection of monoclonal FLC due to greater sensitivity. To test this hypothesis, all available samples from patients who were IFE negative after treatment with carfilzomib and lenalidomide-based induction and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in the Myeloma XI trial underwent FLC-MS testing. FLC-MS response assessments from post-induction, day+100 post-ASCT and six months post-maintenance randomisation were compared to serum FLC assay results. Almost 40% of patients had discordant results and 28.7% of patients with a normal FLC ratio had residual monoclonal FLC detectable by FLC-MS. FLC-MS positivity was associated with reduced progression-free survival (PFS) but an abnormal FLC ratio was not. This study demonstrates that FLC-MS provides a superior methodology for the detection of residual monoclonal FLC with FLC-MS positivity identifying IFE-negative patients who are at higher risk of early progression.

Continuous cover forestry (CCF) has gained interest as an alternative to even-aged management particularly on drained peatland forests. However, relatively little is known about the physiological response of suppressed trees when larger trees are removed as a part of CCF practices. Consequently, studies concentrating on process-level modeling of the response of trees to selection harvesting are also rare. Here, we compared, modeled and measured harvest response of previously suppressed Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees to a selection harvest. We quantified the harvest response by collecting Norway spruce tree-ring samples in a drained peatland forest site and measuring the change in stable carbon and oxygen isotopic ratios of wood formed during 2010-20, including five post-harvest years. The measured isotopic ratios were compared with ecosystem-level process model predictions for ${\kern0em }^{13}$C discrimination and ${\kern0em }^{18}$O leaf water enrichment. We found that the model predicted similar but lower harvest response than the measurements. Furthermore, accounting for mesophyll conductance was important for capturing the variation in ${\kern0em }^{13}$C discrimination. In addition, we performed sensitivity analysis on the model, which suggests that the modeled ${\kern0em }^{13}$C discrimination is sensitive to parameters related to CO2 transport through stomata to the mesophyll.

HIF-1α regulated genes are mainly responsible for tumour resistance to radiation- and chemo-therapy. Among these genes, carbonic anhydrase isoform IX (CA9) is highly over expressed in many types of cancer especially in high grade brain cancer like Glioblastoma (GBM). Inhibition of the enzymatic activity by application of specific chemical CA9 inhibitor sulphonamides (CAI) like Acetazolamide (Aza.), the new sulfonamide derivative carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (SU.D2) or indirect inhibitors like the HIF-1α inhibitor Chetomin or molecular inhibitors like CA9-siRNA are leading to an inhibition of the functional role of CA9 during tumorigenesis. Human GBM cells were treated with in vitro hypoxia (1, 6, or 24 h at 0.1%, O2). Aza. application was at a range between 250 and 8000 nM and the HIF-1α inhibitor Chetomin at a concentration range of 150-500 nM. Cell culture plates were incubated for 24 h under hypoxia (0.1% O2). Further, CA9-siRNA constructs were transiently transfected into GBM cells exposed to extreme hypoxic aeration conditions. CA9 protein expression level was detectable in a cell-type specific manner under normoxic conditions. Whereas U87-MG exhibited a strong aerobic expression, U251 and U373 displayed moderate and GaMG very weak normoxic CA9 protein bands. Aza. as well as SU.D2 displayed inhibitory characteristics to hypoxia induced CA9 expression in the four GBM cell lines for 24 h of hypoxia (0.1% O2) at concentrations between 3500 and 8000 nM, on both the protein and mRNA level. Parallel experiments using CA9-siRNA confirmed these results. Application of 150-500 nM of the glycolysis inhibitor Chetomin under similar oxygenation conditions led to a sharply reduced expression of both CA IX protein and CA9 mRNA levels, indicating a clear glucose availability involvement for the hypoxic HIF-1α and CA9 expression in GBM cells. Hypoxia significantly influences the behaviour of human tumour cells by activation of genes involved in the adaptation to hypoxic stress. The main objective in malignant GBM therapy is either to eradicate the tumour or to convert it into a controlled, quiescent chronic disease. Aza., SU.D2, Chetomin or CA9-siRNA possesses functional CA9 inhibitory characteristics when applied against human cancers with hypoxic regions like GBM. They may be used as alternative or in conjunction with other direct inhibitors possessing similar functionality, thereby rendering them as potential optimal tools for the development of an optimized therapy in human brain cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the associations of healthcare worker status with multisystem illness trajectory in hospitalised post-COVID-19 individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-eight patients were evaluated 28-60 days after the last episode of hospital care. Thirty-six (21%) were healthcare workers. Compared with non-healthcare workers, healthcare workers were of similar age (51.3 (8.7) years vs 55.0 (12.4) years; p=0.09) more often women (26 (72%) vs 48 (38%); p<0.01) and had lower 10-year cardiovascular risk (%) (8.1 (7.9) vs 15.0 (11.5); p<0.01) and Coronavirus Clinical Characterisation Consortium in-hospital mortality risk (7.3 (10.2) vs 12.7 (9.8); p<0.01). Healthcare worker status associated with less acute inflammation (peak C reactive protein 48 mg/L (IQR: 14-165) vs 112 mg/L (52-181)), milder illness reflected by WHO clinical severity score distribution (p=0.04) and shorter duration of admission (4 days (IQR: 2-6) vs 6 days (3-12)).In adjusted multivariate logistic regression analysis, healthcare worker status associated with a binary classification (probable/very likely vs not present/unlikely) of adjudicated myocarditis (OR: 2.99; 95% CI (1.01 to 8.89) by 28-60 days postdischarge).After a mean (SD, range) duration of follow-up after hospital discharge of 450 (88) days (range 290, 627 days), fewer healthcare workers died or were rehospitalised (1 (3%) vs 22 (17%); p=0.038) and secondary care referrals for post-COVID-19 syndrome were common (42%) and similar to non-healthcare workers (38%; p=0.934). CONCLUSION: Healthcare worker status was independently associated with the likelihood of adjudicated myocarditis, despite better antecedent health. Two in five healthcare workers had a secondary care referral for post-COVID-19 syndrome. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04403607.

Stable isotope analysis of cellulose is an increasingly important aspect of ecological and palaeoenvironmental research. Since these techniques are very costly, any methodological development which can provide simultaneous measurement of stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios in cellulose deserves further exploration. A large number (3074) of tree-ring α-cellulose samples are used to compare the stable carbon isotope ratios (δ(13)C) produced by high-temperature (1400°C) pyrolysis/gas chromatography (GC)/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) with those produced by combustion GC/IRMS. Although the two data sets are very strongly correlated, the pyrolysis results display reduced variance and are strongly biased towards the mean. The low carbon isotope ratios of tree-ring cellulose during the last century, reflecting anthropogenic disturbance of atmospheric carbon dioxide, are thus overestimated. The likely explanation is that a proportion of the oxygen atoms are bonding with residual carbon in the reaction chamber to form carbon monoxide. The 'pyrolysis adjustment', proposed here, is based on combusting a stratified sub-sample of the pyrolysis results, across the full range of carbon isotope ratios, and using the paired results to define a regression equation that can be used to adjust all the pyrolysis measurements. In this study, subsamples of 30 combustion measurements produced adjusted chronologies statistically indistinguishable from those produced by combusting every sample. This methodology allows simultaneous measurement of the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen using high-temperature pyrolysis, reducing the amount of sample required and the analytical costs of measuring them separately.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the outcome of hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) between athletes and non-athletes. METHODS: The authors prospectively collected data on 122 patients, the largest comparative series reported, who underwent hip arthroscopy for FAI. Of these, 80 actively participated in sporting activities (athletes), while 42 did not (non-athletes). Patients were asked to complete questionnaires for the modified Harris hip score (MHHS), non-arthritic hip score (NAHS), patient satisfaction on a visual analogue scale (VAS). This was collected immediately before surgery, and at 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after the procedure. The responses to the MHHS questionnaire were used to calculate the quality-of-life (QoL) score using the Rosser index matrix. RESULTS: A significant improvement in the MHHS, NAHS and QoL was observed at 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after surgery (p<0.001). The 6-week MHHS (p=0.01) and NAHS (p=0.04) for the athletes were significantly better as compared with non-athletes. However, the 6-month and 1-year MHHS, NAHS and QoL scores were statistically similar for both groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this large, prospective series of patients we have demonstrated the positive impact of arthroscopic surgery for FAI in both the athletic and non-athletic population. Arthroscopic management of FAI is thus not the sole domain of the athletic patient. Non-athletes can do just as well.

Heart and circulatory diseases affect more than seven million people in the UK. Non-invasive cardiac imaging is a critical element of contemporary cardiology practice. Progressive improvements in technology over the last 20 years have increased diagnostic accuracy in all modalities and led to the incorporation of non-invasive imaging into many standard cardiac clinical care pathways. Cardiac imaging tests are requested by a variety of healthcare practitioners and performed in a range of settings from the most advanced hospitals to local health centres. Imaging is used to detect the presence and consequences of cardiovascular disease, as well as to monitor the response to therapies. The previous UK national imaging strategy statement which brought together all of the non-invasive imaging modalities was published in 2010. The purpose of this document is to collate contemporary standards developed by the modality-specific professional organisations which make up the British Cardiovascular Society Imaging Council, bringing together common and essential recommendations. The development process has been inclusive and iterative. Imaging societies (representing both cardiology and radiology) reviewed and agreed on the initial structure. The final document therefore represents a position, which has been generated inclusively, presents rigorous standards, is applicable to clinical practice and deliverable. This document will be of value to a variety of healthcare professionals including imaging departments, the National Health Service or other organisations, regulatory bodies, commissioners and other purchasers of services, and service users, i.e., patients, and their relatives.
