Ovarian cancer has been emerged as a most common and lethal gynecological malignancy in India. High serum insulin and low adiponectin have been associated with increased risk of ovarian cancer. But their role in development of ovarian cancer is conflicting and little evidence is available. We aimed to evaluate blood levels of insulin and adiponectin in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients and their association with the risk to develop EOC. The study included following three groups; Group 1: fifty cases of cytohistopathologically confirmed cases of EOC, Group 2: fifty age matched cases of benign ovarian conditions and Group 3: fifty ages matched healthy controls with no evidence of any benign or malignant ovarian pathology as ruled out by clinical examination and relevant investigations. Cytohistopathologically confirmed and newly diagnosed cases of EOC and benign ovarian cancer were included in this study. The median value of fasting serum insulin was significantly high (15.0 µlU/ml, P = 0.02) and adiponectin were significantly low (5.1 µg/ml, P < 0.001) in ovarian cancer patients compared to benign ovarian tumors and healthy controls group. A significant increase risk of ovarian cancer was found in high tertile (≥ 18.7 µlU/ml) of serum insulin level (OR = 2.7; 95% CI = 1.00-6.67, P = 0.04) and lower tertile (≤ 5.45 µg/ml) of adiponectin level (OR = 3.2; 95% CI = 1.10-9.71, P = 0.03). High serum insulin level and low adiponectin levels were significantly associated with increased risk for development of ovarian cancer.

Zinc-air batteries are promising energy storage devices owing to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the development of durable and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts is a major concern for Zn-air batteries. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) as bifunctional electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries. We discuss the advantages of TMDs, such as high activity, good stability, and tunable electronic structure, as well as the challenges, such as low conductivity, poor durability, and limited active sites. We also highlight the strategies for fine-tuning the properties of TMDs, such as defect engineering, doping, hybridization, and structural engineering, to enhance their catalytic performance and stability. We provide a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the applications of TMDs in Zn-air batteries, demonstrating their potential as low-cost, abundant, and environmentally friendly alternatives to noble metal catalysts. We also suggest future directions like exploring new TMDs materials and compositions, developing novel synthesis and modification techniques, investigating the interfacial interactions and charge transfer processes, and integrating TMDs with other functional materials. This review aims to illuminate the path forward for the development of efficient and durable Zn-air batteries, aligning with the broader objectives of sustainable energy solutions.

Background: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) are often diagnosed late due to lack of specific symptoms and efficient tumor markers. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin/matrix metallopeptidase-9 (NGAL/MMP-9) complex are involved in the development and progression of various cancers and have potential as a biomarker for diagnosing ovarian cancer. Objectives: To compare the serum NGAL/MMP-9 complex levels in patients with EOC, benign ovarian tumor, and healthy controls, and determine the potential cut-off values of NGAL/MMP-9 complex for diagnosing EOC. Materials and Methods: The study included 50 patients each with EOC and benign ovarian tumor, along with 50 age-matched healthy controls (N = 150). The level of serum NGAL/MMP-9 complex was estimated based on sandwich ELISA. The mean and median of the three groups were compared, and the ROC curve was used to determine the optimum cut-off, sensitivity, and specificity of serum NGAL/MMP-9 complex levels in the diagnosis of EOC. Results: A significant difference was found in the median values of the NGAL/MMP-9 complex (malignant EOC: 67.5 ng/ml, benign ovarian tumor: 53.7 ng/ml, controls: 29.2 ng/ml; P < 0.01). NGAL/MMP-9 complex level was also significantly associated with the FIGO staging (Stages I and II: 42.9 ng/ml; Stages III and IV: 70.5 ng/ml; P < 0.003). At a 55.0 ng/ml cut-off value, the NGAL/MMP-9 complex had 82.0% sensitivity and 78.0% specificity in diagnosing EOC. Conclusion: The NGAL/MMP-9 complex may be a promising biomarker for determining the progression of EOC as well as in detecting advanced-stage ovarian cancer.

Background There is paucity of real-world data on COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness from cohort designs. Variable vaccine performance has been observed in test-negative case-control designs. There is also scarce real-world data of health issues in individuals receiving vaccines after prior COVID-19, and of adverse events of significant concern (AESCs) in the vaccinated. Methods: A cohort study was conducted from July 2021 to December 2021 in a tertiary hospital of North India. The primary outcome was vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 during the second wave in India. Secondary outcomes were AESCs, and persistent health issues in those receiving COVID-19 vaccines. Regression analyses were performed to determine risk factors of COVID-19 outcomes and persistent health issues. Results: Of the 2760 health care workers included, 2544 had received COVID-19 vaccines, with COVISHIELD (rChAdOx1-nCoV-19 vaccine) received by 2476 (97.3%) and COVAXIN (inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine) by 64 (2.5%). A total of 2691 HCWs were included in the vaccine effectiveness analysis, and 973 COVID-19 events were reported during the period of analysis. Maximum effectiveness of two doses of vaccine in preventing COVID-19 occurrence was 17% across three different strategies of analysis adopted for robustness of data. One-dose recipients were at 1.27-times increased risk of COVID-19. Prior SARS-CoV-2 infection was a strong independent protective factor against COVID-19 (aOR 0.66). Full vaccination reduced moderate-severe COVID-19 by 57%. Those with lung disease were at 2.54-times increased risk of moderate-severe COVID-19, independent of vaccination status. AESCs were observed in 33/2544 (1.3%) vaccinees, including one case each of myocarditis and severe hypersensitivity. Individuals with hypothyroidism were at 5-times higher risk and those receiving a vaccine after recovery from COVID-19 were at 3-times higher risk of persistent health issues. Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccination reduced COVID-19 severity but offered marginal protection against occurrence. The possible relationship of asthma and hypothyroidism with COVID-19 outcomes necessitates focused research. With independent protection of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and high-risk of persistent health issues in individuals receiving vaccine after recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection, the recommendation of vaccinating those with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection needs reconsideration.

One of the emerging treatment strategies for cancer particularly for haematological malignancies is natural killer (NK) cell therapy. However, the availability of a best approach to maximize NK cell anticancer potential is still awaited. It is well established that cytokine-induced memory-like NK cells have the potential to differentiate after a short period of preactivation with interleukins-IL-12, IL-15, and IL-18 and exhibit increased responses to cytokine or activating receptor restimulation for weeks to months after preactivation. We demonstrated that NK cells differentiated from CD34+ cells isolated from cord blood show increased antitumor potential in vitro against different cancer cells. Using flow cytometry, we found that NK cells were able to induce apoptosis in cancer cells in vitro. We further analysed surviving gene expression by quantitative real time PCR and reported that NK cells cause down regulation of survivin gene expression in tumor cells. Therefore, NK cell therapy represents a promising immunotherapy for cancers like AML and other haematological malignancies. It concluded that NK cells can be differentiated from CD34+ cells isolated from cord blood ,are able to induce apoptosis and induce increased antitumor potential in vitro against different cancer cells besides cause downregulation of survivin gene expression in tumor cells. Therefore, NK cell therapy represents a promising immunotherapy for different cancer types and haematological malignancies. Furthers studies are necessary to confirm our findings.

The catalytic reduction of methylene blue was studied using biosynthesised gold-silver (Au-Ag) alloy nanoparticles (NPs). The fungal biomass of Trichoderma harzianum was used as a reducing and stabilising agent in the synthesis of Au-Ag alloy NPs. The synthesised NPs were well characterised by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The plausible synthesis mechanism involved in the formation of Au-Ag alloy NPs was also discussed with diagrammatic representation. A series of experiments was performed to investigate the catalytic activity of the as-prepared Au-Ag alloy NPs and found that the alloy NPs show excellent catalytic activity.

We demonstrate a novel, unprecedented and eco-friendly mode for the biosynthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoflowers at ambient room temperature using Bacillus licheniformis MTCC 9555 and assessed their photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye was analyzed under UV-irradiation. An enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoflowers was obtained compared to the earlier reports on ZnO nanostructures and other photocatalytic materials. The mechanism behind the enhanced photocatalytic activity was illustrated with diagrammatic representation. It is assumed that due to larger content of oxygen vacancy ZnO nanoflowers shows enhanced photocatalytic activity. Photostability of ZnO nanoflowers was analyzed for consecutive 3 cycles. The size and morphology of ZnO nanoflowers have been characterized by SEM, TEM and found to be in the size range of 250 nm to 1 µm with flower like morphology. It was found that ZnO nanoflowers was formed by agglomeration of ZnO nanorods. Further the EDX established the presence of the elemental signal of the Zn and O. XRD spectrum of ZnO nanoflowers confirmed 2θ values analogous to the ZnO nanocrystal. FTIR analysis was carried to determine the probable biomolecules responsible for stabilization of ZnO nanoflowers. The plausible mechanism behind the synthesis of ZnO nanoflowers by Bacillus licheniformis MTCC 9555 was also discussed with diagram representation.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: To assess the saccular function using the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test in children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. METHODS: 15 children (12 males and 3 females) with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in the age range of 4-12 years constituted the study group. 10 children (6 males and 4 females) with normal hearing constituted the control group. All the children were evaluated for saccular function by using the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP). RESULTS: For study group the mean P1 and N1 latencies values were 15.12ms and 23.86ms, respectively. For control group the mean P1 and N1 latencies were 15.39ms and 23.68ms. The comparison of mean P1 and N1 latencies values between study and control groups revealed no significant difference (p>0.05). Furthermore, the mean amplitude values of VEMP responses for study and control groups were 75.78µV and 160.51µV, respectively. The comparison mean amplitude values between study and control groups revealed statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Out of 15 children in the study group 2 children had the absent VEMP response in both the ears. CONCLUSION: Because the vestibular function plays an important role in gross motor development in children, audiologists and otologist should recognize and understand the vestibular dysfunction in hearing impaired children and be prepared to undertake appropriate evaluations. However, additional research is needed on a larger sample size to determine the value of routine vestibular evaluation in children with sensorineural hearing loss and its potential benefit on the clinical outcome of these patients along with VEMP testing.
