RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The shortage of available transplant organs has made it necessary to search for alternatives, one of which is xenotransplantation. However, the use of animal organs could face rejection from society and the personnel involved in its implementation. OBJECTIVES: (a) to analyze the attitudes of Veterinary Degree students in six Spanish Universities towards xenotransplantation; and (b) to determine the factors that affect its acceptance. METHODS: Of the 2815 students surveyed in the degree program, 2683 valid surveys were obtained. Attitudes towards organ xenotransplantation were evaluated using a validated questionnaire of organ donation. RESULTS: If xenotransplantation was confirmed as a clinical reality, 93% (n = 2493) of those surveyed would accept a xenotransplanted organ, whilst 7% would not. If the results of xenotransplantation were worse than those obtained with human donors and it entailed more risk, 12% (n = 318) would be in favor. 56% (n = 1497) of the students would accept a xenotransplantation provisionally pending the arrival of a human organ. Attitudes towards xenotransplantation were affected by the academic year in which a student was studying, with more favorable attitudes among students in the last year (88% in first year vs. 95% in fifth year; p < .001). More favorable attitudes are also observed depending on the attitude they have towards organ transplantation, with those students being more in favor of donating their organs when they die (94% vs. 88%; p < .001). CONCLUSION: Veterinary students would have a very favorable attitude toward xenotransplantation if these animal organs functioned as well as human organs. Therefore, these students could play an important role in the future promotion of this technique.

RESUMO

Postural control is considered a key variable in team sports, such as handball, which require abilities strongly related to balance. However, postural control and its relationship to the performance of handball skills according to the players' skill level and age has not been evaluated to date. This study analyzes the relationship between balance ability and team-handball performance according to age and expertise, applying a non-linear approach to balance assessment. Postural control from 114 male team-handball players was analyzed through the center of pressure (COP) during a balance task. Sport performance was measured by the accuracy and speed in throwing. Expert players threw faster, but not more accurately than recreational players. Balance performance was better for 18+ players (older than 18 years old) than those U12 (under 12 years old), but no differences were found according to their skill level. Players who threw with less accuracy showed slower COP velocity during the balance task and their moves were less irregular. Players who threw faster displayed more irregular and less auto-correlated COP movements. In conclusion, experienced team-handball players exhibited better balance performance, and this seems to be related to the maturation of the motor system more than to sport performance level. Nevertheless, non-linear measures of COP excursion revealed an exploratory behavior during balance in expert players, exhibiting more motion adjustments to reduce motor output error. Traditional variables measuring balance performance did not show sensitivity to this motor control process. A non-linear approach to balance assessment revealed functional variability during balance as an intrinsic characteristic of individuals' motor control according to age and skill level.

RESUMO

The revictimization of women during the life cycle has attracted the interest of many researchers in recent years. In this study, we examined the relationship between the experience of child abuse and the subsequent victimization by a male partner in adulthood. Specifically, we proposed that childhood abuse experiences negatively affect the development of healthy interpersonal relationships in adulthood. Thus, some female victims of child abuse are more likely to select potentially abusive intimate male partners. Data from 23,863 heterosexual women from the 28 countries of the European Union who were living with their partners at the time of the study were used. We investigated the association between child abuse, partner's adherence to traditional gender roles, and general violence and intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. Multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM) results indicated that child abuse is positively related to the partner's traditional gender role and general violence, which in turn predict IPV. Countries' level of human development was found to affect this process. We found support for the hypothesis that child abuse is related to IPV partially because it influences partner selection in adulthood. Thus, when they become adults, girls abused in childhood tend to select partners who are either traditional or generally violent. There is a persistent influence of social structural conditions (i.e., country's human development) throughout this process.

RESUMO

A key issue for agriculture in irrigated arid lands is the control of soil salinity, and this is one of the goals for irrigated districts when changing from flood to sprinkling irrigation. We combined soil sampling, proximal electromagnetic induction, and satellite data to appraise how soil salinity and its distribution along a previously flood-irrigated field evolved after its transformation to sprinkling. We also show that the relationship between NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) and ECe (electrical conductivity of the soil saturation extracts) mimics the production function between yield and soil salinity. Under sprinkling, the field had a double crop of barley and then sunflower in 2009 and 2011. In both years, about 50% of the soil of the entire studied field-45 ha-had ECe < 8 dS m-1, i.e., allowing barley cultivation, while the percent of surface having ECe ≥ 16 dS m-1 increased from 8.4% in 2009 to 13.7% in 2011. Our methodology may help monitor the soil salinity oscillations associated with irrigation management. After quantifying and mapping the soil salinity in 2009 and 2011, we show that barley was stunted in places of the field where salinity was higher. Additionally, the areas of salinity persisted after the subsequent alfalfa cropping in 2013. Application of differential doses of water to the saline patches is a viable method to optimize irrigation water distribution and lessen soil salinity in sprinkler-irrigated agriculture.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neisseria meningitidis is an inhabitant of the mucosal surfaces of the human nasopharynx. We recently demonstrated that the secreted meningococcal Two-partner secretion protein A (TpsA) is involved in interbacterial competition. The C-terminal end of the large TpsA protein contains a small toxic domain that inhibits the growth of target bacteria. The producing cells are protected from this toxic activity by a small immunity protein that is encoded by the gene immediately downstream of the tpsA gene. Further downstream on the chromosome, a repertoire of toxic modules, designated tpsC cassettes, is encoded that could replace the toxic module of TpsA by recombination. Each tpsC cassette is associated with a gene encoding a cognate immunity protein. RESULTS: Blast searchers using the toxic domains of TpsA and TpsC proteins as queries identified homologies with the C-terminal part of neisserial MafB proteins, which, for the rest, showed no sequence similarity to TpsA proteins. On the chromosome, mafB genes are part of genomic islands, which include cassettes for additional toxic modules as well as genes putatively encoding immunity proteins. We demonstrate that a MafB protein of strain B16B6 inhibits the growth of a strain that does not produce the corresponding immunity protein. Assays in E. coli confirmed that the C-terminal region of MafB is responsible for toxicity, which is inhibited by the cognate immunity protein. Pull-down assays revealed direct interaction between MafB toxic domains and the cognate immunity proteins. CONCLUSIONS: The meningococcal MafB proteins are novel toxic proteins involved in interbacterial competition.

RESUMO

Visceral leishmaniasis due to Leishmania Infantum is an endemic parasitic infection in the Mediterranean area. Since 2009, Europe's largest outbreak of Leishmaniasis has been reported in the region of Madrid (Spain). Renal involvement is an unusual complication. Different forms of renal disease have been described: interstitial, glomerular, and vascular damage. Direct invasion of renal parenchyma by the parasite has been described as a mechanism of kidney damage, especially in the immunocompromised. Immune complex deposition and T cells adhesion molecules activation have demonstrated that a pathogenic role in glomerulonephritis related to visceral leishmaniasis. The association between mixed cryoglobulinemia and visceral leishmaniasis has been previously reported in six patients. Renal involvement is only described in one of them. From July 2009 to October 2012, 4 patients with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis and mixed cryoglobulinemia with negative serology for hepatitis B and C were diagnosed in our hospital. Serology of Leishmania in serum bank samples was performed; it was positive in 3 patients. Leishmania parasite was confirmed by other tests. We present 3 patients with mixed cryoglobulinemia and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis as first clinical manifestation of visceral leishmaniasis.

RESUMO

Antinociception induced by the adenosine A1 receptor agonist N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA) is linked to opioid receptors. We studied the subtype of receptors to which CPA action is related, as well as a possible enhancement of antinociception when CPA is coadministered with opioid receptor agonists. Spinal cord neuronal nociceptive responses of male Wistar rats with inflammation were recorded using the single motor unit technique. CPA antinociception was challenged with naloxone or norbinaltorphimine. The antinociceptive activity of fentanyl and U-50488H was studied alone and combined with CPA. Reversal of CPA antinociception was observed with norbinaltorphimine (82.9±13% of control) but not with low doses of naloxone (27±8% of control), indicating an involvement of κ-opioid but not µ-opioid receptors. Low doses of CPA did not modify fentanyl antinociception. However, a significant enhancement of the duration of antinociception was seen when U-50488H was coadministered with CPA. We conclude that antinociception mediated by CPA in the spinal cord is associated with activation of κ-opioid but not µ-opioid receptors in inflammation. In addition, coadministration of CPA and κ-opioid receptor agonists is followed by significantly longer antinociception, opening new perspectives in the treatment of chronic inflammatory pain.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: In patients older than 75 years with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), the decision between treatment with dialysis [intention to treat with dialysis (ITD)] or conservative care (CC) is a challenge. Geriatric assessment can be helpful. The aim was to identify which factors had had an influence on decision-making. METHODS: We recruited 56 patients. At baseline we analyzed age, frailty (defined following the criteria of Fried et al. [J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci 2001;56:146-156]), dependence for activities of daily living (ADL), cognitive impairment, depression, comorbidity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. After full information about prognosis and treatment options, the preferences of the patients and families were taken into consideration as determinants in the decision-making process. During the follow-up, we evaluated clinical and laboratory parameters, hospitalization, mortality and reevaluated frailty. RESULTS: Twenty patients opted for CC, and 36 patients opted for ITD. On univariate analysis, the predictive factors of the election of CC were age, prefrailty, cognitive impairment, and dependence for ADL. In the multivariate analysis, age and prefrailty remained as predictors for the choice of CC. Hospitalizations were more frequent in CC. Survival was similar in both groups (p = 0.098). CONCLUSIONS: Frailty assessment could be useful for decision-making about the treatment in elderly patients with CKD. CC may be a good treatment option.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Lower serum sodium levels have been associated with increased mortality among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our aim was to analyze the independent factors associated with lower sodium levels among nondialysis patients with advanced CKD and to evaluate the evolution of these patients in comparison to those with higher plasma sodium over a 1-year period. METHODS: We included 72 patients with CKD stages 4 and 5 without clinically evident cardiopathy or liver disease. Bioelectrical impedance and echocardiography were performed to analyze the possible relation between plasma sodium and volume status and subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. During follow-up, we compared the evolution of patients with lower baseline plasma sodium (low quartile: <138 mEq/l) with that of patients with higher levels over a 1-year period. RESULTS: At baseline, the independent predictors of lower plasma sodium were C-reactive protein (CRP; OR 0.96; 95% CI 0.91-0.99) and body mass index (OR 0.89; 95% CI 0.78-0.99). An inverse correlation between plasma sodium and CRP was observed (r = -0.32; p = 0.01). Plasma sodium did not correlate with extracellular water and was not different between patients with or without echocardiographic data of LV dysfunction (p = 0.7). During follow-up, patients with lower sodium at baseline showed persistently lower sodium values (p = 0.04), higher CRP (p = 0.05), lower serum albumin (p < 0.01) and higher erythropoietin-stimulating agent resistance index (p = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest an association between lower plasma sodium and a microinflammatory state among patients with advanced CKD. Inflammation could be an underlying confounding factor explaining the increased mortality in these patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Community support has a profound positive impact on older people's health and plays a crucial role in facilitating aging in place. This impact is particularly significant in the Chinese context, where community support can alleviate the pressure on traditional family caregiving. This study translated, adapted, and validated the perceived community support questionnaire (PCSQ) for use with older Chinese. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data for this validation study were collected from a cross-sectional survey of 1,064 Chinese aged 65 years and above. Following the cultural adaptation of the PCSQ-14, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine its factor structure. Criterion validity, convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency reliability, and test-retest reliability of the scale were also assessed. RESULTS: Based on the CFA results, the adapted PCSQ-14 was found to have a 3-factor solution for community integration, community participation, and community organizations. The criterion-related validity was supported by its significant correlation with depression. Convergent and discriminant validity were established, with the internal consistency of the scale being 0.90. The test-retest reliability intraclass correlation coefficient for the scale was 0.78. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: The adapted version of the PCSQ-14 demonstrated promising psychometric properties in assessing perceived community support in older Chinese. The adapted PCSQ-14 could assist researchers in determining older Chinese adults' perceptions of community support, and could also assist practitioners and policymakers in developing targeted services for older people and allocating resources more effectively.

RESUMO

This article presents the results of soil and water analysis plus the plans -or "maps"- from the Report [1] issued 1974 on salt-affected soils in a new irrigation district located in the semi-arid Bardenas area of Aragón, northern Spain (Fig. 1). The survey was carried out by the now defunct Institute for Agrarian Reform and Development (i.e., IRYDA by its Spanish acronym). Work began in January 1972, with a preliminary reconnaissance survey on 53,000 ha using aerial photographs at a scale of 1:32,000 from the USAF photogrammetric flight of 1956-57 which covered almost the whole of Spain. Photographs from this flight are available on the Spanish aerial photograph viewer (https://fototeca.cnig.es/fototeca/). At that time, levelling for irrigation had not yet begun. This reconnaissance allowed the selection of an area of 32,300 ha (Fig. 1) with relevant salinity symptoms, like irrigated fields with irregular or no crop growth. A more detailed photo interpretation of the area was carried out at 1:12,000 scale from a flight in August 1971. The new irrigation district is fed by high quality water from the Pyrenees, but soon faced salinity problems that were well known to the farmers and echoed by the media [2, 3, 4] in an environment of great social concern about increasing agricultural production [5]. The Report, written in Spanish, is dated July 1974, but the soil profiles were described and sampled between April 1972 and March 1974. The Report [1] consists of two volumes, the first is a Memoria containing data from the surveys, laboratory analyses, pedological descriptions and some photographs of the soils and other land features of agricultural importance, as well as data and calculations for designing the drainage of selected plots. The second volume consists of five folded plans: a) location of the surveyed area at the scale of 1:200,000, and four plans at the scale of 1:25,000, b) soil-geomorphologic units, c) soil units describing their characteristics, d) land use, and e) locations of the described soil profiles and other field observations. Taken together, these data, improved by our orthorectification, gives a picture of the salinity and other soil properties in this area. The reuse of the data for comparisons with the evolution of agriculture in subsequent years -especially soil salinity and sodicity- will help to evaluate the agricultural practices over the last fifty years, particularly after intensive land levelling and irrigation.

RESUMO

The literature has consistently found that victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women are reluctant to make their situation visible and report it to the police. Whether victims perceive and define IPV behaviors as reportable is key to understanding in which cases the police are seen as potential providers of help or whether other potential sources of help (family, friends, professionals, etc.) are preferred. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the influence of perceived reportability of IPV on women's selection of the police as a source of help compared to not seeking help or selecting other sources of help. Structural equation modeling was applied to data from 479 female participants drawn from a nationally representative sample of 1,112 male and female Chilean adolescents and young adults conducted by the National Youth Institute of Chile. The results showed that perceived reportability was a significant predictor of choosing the police as a source of help compared to other informal sources of help, such as family and friends. However, perceived reportability did not affect help-seeking choices between the police and other formal help sources (psychologists, public services). Participants' IPV victimization and attitudes toward IPV also played a specific role in selecting the police as a source of help. These findings highlight the complexity of the visibility of women's IPV victimization to the police and the need to examine its explanatory mechanisms.

Our world is undergoing a series of changes that are taking it to an unsustainable situation. In addition to alerting the population, we must seek education towards a more sustainable world. This research proposes the realization in Alcoy (Spain) of some urban itineraries with mobile devices and with secondary school students, in order to promote an improvement in awareness and action on environmental problems. This activity aims, among other objectives, through informal learning and outside the classroom, to raise awareness among secondary school students about the environmental problems that threaten us. With the completion of a questionnaire, after carrying out these urban itineraries, the results of 214 students confirm that, with this type of activity, there is a notable improvement in the level of awareness and concern for environmental problems. It is also detected that men prefer these types of environmental awareness tests, compared to women, who prefer tests that have a more creative and artistic theme. It is worth continuing to propose this type of activity among students and improve their approach by forecasting, planning, and improving the training of the teachers involved in it.

RESUMO

The studied farms are small family businesses, and so, in more than half of the cases, their continuity is not guaranteed. Livestock management is typical of a mountain system, in which the animals graze throughout the year in cultivated fields, sown meadows, forests near the farms, and mountain pastures during the three summer months. The herds always have the constant surveillance of a shepherd. Farmers consider the current infrastructure present in mountain grasslands insufficient to facilitate the management and care of their herd. Their activity conflicts with various species of wildlife, such as the wild boar, Sus scrofa, roe deer, Capreolus capreolus, or griffon vulture, Gyps fulvus, and large carnivores such as the brown bear, Ursus arctos, or the grey wolf Canis lupus, despite all of them taking preventive measures to defend their herds from predators. The most widely used prevention measures are the presence of mastiff dogs, Canis lupus familiaris, next to the herds and the use of electric fencing to lock up livestock at night. Farmers reject the presence of bears and wolves in their area, considering it a real threat to the continuity of their economic activity, which presents a high degree of vulnerability.

RESUMO

This paper presents a new approach for the multiobjective optimal design of robust controllers in systems with stochastic parametric uncertainty. Traditionally, uncertainty is incorporated into the optimization process. However, this can generate two problems: (1) low performance in the nominal scenario; and (2) high computational cost. For the first point, it is possible to ensure that the controllers produce an acceptable performance for the nominal scenario in exchange for being lightly robust. For the second point, the methodology proposed in this work reduces the computational cost significantly. This approach addresses uncertainty by analyzing the robustness of optimal and nearly optimal controllers in the nominal scenario. The methodology guarantees obtaining controllers that are similar/neighboring to lightly robust controllers. Two examples of controller design are shown: one for a linear model and another for a nonlinear model. Both examples demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed new approach.

RESUMO

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are some of the most prevalent diseases in the world. They have a multifactorial aetiology encompassing ergonomic and psychosocial risk factors. The aim of this study is to analyse the way job insecurity and physical workload are linked to musculoskeletal disorders, as well as the mediating role other psychosocial work risks can have on this potential relationship. A parallel mediation path regression analysis was designed using a sample of 457 nursing aides. The influence job insecurity and physical workload has on the onset of musculoskeletal symptoms together with the variables which mediate this relationship were examined. The results prove that both independent variables explain the onset of musculoskeletal symptoms in these professionals. The influence exerted by job insecurity is mediated by the social support received at work and the demands of the job. However, when analysing the physical workload, the social support received at work is not relevant as a mediator in this relationship. Job insecurity and physical workload are significant variables on the occurrence of musculoskeletal symptoms. The data obtained supports the need to focus on physical and psychosocial factors in order to prevent these disorders.

RESUMO

The main goal of this study is to analyze the degree to which several community elements such as insecurity, discrimination and informal community support might have an influence on the social integration of Latin-American immigrants, a group at risk of social exclusion in Spain. Multivariate linear regression analyses results showed that informal community support is positively related to social integration whereas insecurity is negatively related. The statistical relationship between discrimination and social integration disappears once levels of informal community support are taken into account. A better understanding of the factors that either promote or inhibit the social integration progress of immigrant population is important to orientate public policies and intervention programs that contribute to the adaptation of this population to the host society.

RESUMO

Our dataset contains the scans of 278 paper prints of contacts from a photogrammetric flight of 1972, plus a diagram for the relative location of each of the photograms. The paper prints served three years later, i.e. in 1975, for studying the soils of an irrigated district. The entire flight covered about 705 km2, in the semiarid Central Ebro Basin, at the province of Huesca, Spain. The flight encompasses the 359 km2-irrigated district fed by the sections 2nd and 3rd of the first part of the Canal of Monegros, plus the westward conterminous non-irrigated lands until the border with the province of Zaragoza (Fig. 1). The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture throughout its now extinct branch Institute for Agrarian Reform and Development, i.e. IRYDA by its Spanish acronym, contracted a consulting company to produce a report [1] about the location of saline and non-saline soils of the district in 1975. The soil surveyors used the paper prints for preparing the report and marked some of the prints with color wax-pencil. Most of these marks locate the sampled sites but also appear geographical names, schematic highlights of some terrain features, and mentions to ongoing land levelling or similar works.

RESUMO

In recent decades, criminological theories have identified a set of vulnerabilities in potential victims that seek to explain their victimization. When it comes to explaining cybercrime victimization, however, the important role that addiction to the vulnerabilities associated with technological devices can play has tended to be overlooked. In this paper we empirically link smartphone addiction, social support, and cyberfraud victimization in a nationally representative sample of 716 smartphone users followed for three years. The results of discrete survival and growth mixture models suggest that the probability of cyberfraud victimization is lower among users with a decrease in smartphone addiction and an increase in social support over the three years. These results allow us to suggest new avenues in the study of cybercrime victimization, with special emphasis on the psychosocial consequences that the deregulated use of these technological devices may entail.
