RESUMO

Phase segregation is ubiquitously observed in immiscible mixtures, such as oil and water, in which the mixing entropy is overcome by the segregation enthalpy1-3. In monodispersed colloidal systems, however, the colloidal-colloidal interactions are usually non-specific and short-ranged, which leads to negligible segregation enthalpy4. The recently developed photoactive colloidal particles show long-range phoretic interactions, which can be readily tuned with incident light, suggesting an ideal model for studying phase behaviour and structure evolution kinetics5,6. In this work, we design a simple spectral selective active colloidal system, in which TiO2 colloidal species were coded with spectral distinctive dyes to form a photochromic colloidal swarm. In this system, the particle-particle interactions can be programmed by combining incident light with various wavelengths and intensities to enable controllable colloidal gelation and segregation. Furthermore, by mixing the cyan, magenta and yellow colloids, a dynamic photochromic colloidal swarm is formulated. On illumination of coloured light, the colloidal swarm adapts the appearance of incident light due to layered phase segregation, presenting a facile approach towards coloured electronic paper and self-powered optical camouflage.

RESUMO

The adverse impact of particulate air pollution on human health1,2 has prompted the development of purification systems that filter particulates out of air3-5. To maintain performance, the filter units must inevitably be replaced at some point, which requires maintenance, involves costs and generates solid waste6,7. Here we show that an ion-doped conjugated polymer-coated matrix infiltrated with a selected functional liquid enables efficient, continuous and maintenance-free air purification. As the air to be purified moves through the system in the form of bubbles, the functional fluid provides interfaces for filtration and for removal of particulate matter and pollutant molecules from air. Theoretical modelling and experimental results demonstrate that the system exhibits high efficiency and robustness: its one-time air purification efficiency can reach 99.6%, and its dust-holding capacity can reach 950 g m-2. The system is durable and resistant to fouling and corrosion, and the liquid acting as filter can be reused and adjusted to also enable removal of bacteria or odours. We anticipate that our purification approach will be useful for the development of specialist air purifiers that might prove useful in a settings such as hospitals, factories and mines.

RESUMO

Emulsification is a crucial technique for mixing immiscible liquids into droplets in numerous areas ranging from food to medicine to chemical synthesis. Commercial emulsification methods are promising for high production, but suffer from high energy input. Here, we report a very simple and scalable emulsification method that employs the drag-reducing liquid gating structure to create a smooth liquid-liquid interface for the reduction of resistance and tunable generation of droplets with good uniformity. Theoretical modeling and experimental results demonstrate that our method exhibits ultrahigh efficiency, which can reach up to more than 4 orders of magnitude greater energy-saving compared to commercial methods. For temperature-sensitive biological components, such as enzymes, proteins, and bacteria, it can offer a comfortable environment to avoid exposure to high temperatures during emulsifying, and the interface also enables the suppression of fouling. This unique drag-reducing liquid gating interfacial emulsification mechanism promotes the efficiency of droplet generation and provides fresh insight into the innovation of emulsifications that can be applied in many fields, including the food industry, the daily chemical industry, biomedicine, material fabrication, the petrochemical industry, and beyond.

RESUMO

The biological neural network is a highly efficient in-memory computing system that integrates memory and logical computing functions within synapses. Moreover, reconfiguration by environmental chemical signals endows biological neural networks with dynamic multifunctions and enhanced efficiency. Nanofluidic memristors have emerged as promising candidates for mimicking synaptic functions, owing to their similarity to synapses in the underlying mechanisms of ion signaling in ion channels. However, realizing chemical signal-modulated logic functions in nanofluidic memristors, which is the basis for brain-like computing applications, remains unachieved. Here, we report a single-pore nanofluidic logic memristor with reconfigurable logic functions. Based on the different degrees of protonation and deprotonation of functional groups on the inner surface of the single pore, the modulation of the memristors and the reconfiguration of logic functions are realized. More noteworthy, this single-pore nanofluidic memristor can not only avoid the average effects in multipore but also act as a fundamental component in constructing complex neural networks through series and parallel circuits, which lays the groundwork for future artificial nanofluidic neural networks. The implementation of dynamic synaptic functions, modulation of logic gates by chemical signals, and diverse combinations in single-pore nanofluidic memristors opens up new possibilities for their applications in brain-inspired computing.

RESUMO

Aqueous lithium-ion batteries (ALIBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage systems because of the cost-effective, intrinsically safe, and environmentally friendly properties of aqueous electrolytes. Practical application is however impeded by interfacial side-reactions and the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of aqueous electrolytes. Even though higher electrolyte salt concentrations (e.g., water-in-salt electrolyte) enhance performance by widening the ESW, the nature and extent of side-reaction processes are debated and more fundamental understanding thereof is needed. Herein, the interfacial chemistry of one of the most popular electrode materials, V2O5, for aqueous batteries is systematically explored by a unique set of operando analytical techniques. By monitoring electrode/electrolyte interphase deposition, electrolyte pH, and gas evolution, the highly dynamic formation/dissolution of V2O5/V2O4, Li2CO3 and LiF during dis-/charge is demonstrated and shown to be coupled with electrolyte decomposition and conductive carbon oxidation, regardless of electrolyte salt concentration. The study provides deeper understanding of interfacial chemistry of active materials under variable proton activity in aqueous electrolytes, hence guiding the design of more effective electrode/electrolyte interfaces for ALIBs and beyond.

RESUMO

Rare and common GBA variants are risk factors for both Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). However, the degree to which GBA variants are associated with neuropathological features in Lewy body disease (LBD) is unknown. Herein, we assessed 943 LBD cases and examined associations of 15 different neuropathological outcomes with common and rare GBA variants. Neuropathological outcomes included LBD subtype, presence of a high likelihood of clinical DLB (per consensus guidelines), LB counts in five cortical regions, tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the dorsolateral and ventromedial putamen, ventrolateral substantia nigra neuronal loss, Braak neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) stage, Thal amyloid phase, phospho-ubiquitin (pS65-Ub) level, TDP-43 pathology, and vascular disease. Sequencing of GBA exons revealed a total of 42 different variants (4 common [MAF > 0.5%], 38 rare [MAF < 0.5%]) in our series, and 165 cases (17.5%) had a copy of the minor allele for ≥ 1 variant. In analysis of common variants, p.L483P was associated with a lower Braak NFT stage (OR = 0.10, P < 0.001). In gene-burden analysis, presence of the minor allele for any GBA variant was associated with increased odds of a high likelihood of DLB (OR = 2.00, P < 0.001), a lower Braak NFT stage (OR = 0.48, P < 0.001), a lower Thal amyloid phase (OR = 0.55, P < 0.001), and a lower pS65-Ub level (ß: -0.37, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that GBA variants were most common in LBD cases with a combination of transitional/diffuse LBD and Braak NFT stage 0-II or Thal amyloid phase 0-1, and correspondingly that the aforementioned associations of GBA gene-burden with a decreased Braak NFT stage and Thal amyloid phase were observed only in transitional or diffuse LBD cases. Our results indicate that in LBD, GBA variants occur most frequently in cases with greater LB pathology and low AD pathology, further informing disease-risk associations of GBA in PD, PD dementia, and DLB.

RESUMO

Excess fluoride ions in groundwater accumulate through the roots of crops, affecting photosynthesis and inhibiting their growth. Long-term bioaccumulation also threatens human health because it is poorly degradable and toxic. Currently, one of the biggest challenges is developing a unique material that can efficiently remove fluoride ions from the environment. The excellent properties of functionalized pillar[5]arene polymer-filled nanochannel membranes were explored to address this challenge. Constructing a multistage porous nanochannel membrane, consisting of microscale etched nanochannels and nanoscale pillar[5]arene cross-linked polymer voids. A fluoride removal rate of 0.0088 mmol ⋅ L-1 ⋅ min-1 was achieved. Notably, this rate surpassed the rates observed with other control ions by a factor of 6 to 8.8. Our research provides a new direction for developing water fluoride ion removal materials.

RESUMO

Upgrading plastic wastes into high-value products via the thermochemical process is one of the most attractive topics. Although carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been successfully synthesized from plastic pyrolysis gas over Fe-, Co-, or Ni-based catalysts, a deep discussion about the reaction mechanism was seldom mentioned in the literature. Herein, this work was intended to study the growth mechanism of CNTs from hydrocarbons on Fe-Al2O3 catalysts. C5-C7 hydrocarbons were used to synthesize CNTs in a high-temperature fixed-bed reactor, and the carbon products and cracked gas were analyzed in detail. The CNT yield was in the order of cyclohexane, cyclohexene > n-hexane > n-heptane > n-pentane, 1-hexene. It was proposed that CNT growth on Fe-Al2O3 catalysts was mainly determined by the yield and structure of six-membered cyclic species, which was tailored by the carbon chain length, C-C/CC bonds, and linear/cyclic structures of C5-C7 hydrocarbons. Compared with n-hexane, the six-membered rings of cyclohexane and cyclohexene promoted six-membered cyclic species formation, increasing CNT and benzene yields; the seven-membered carbon chain of n-heptane promoted methyl-six-membered cyclic species formation, decreasing CNT and benzene yields while increasing the toluene yield; the five-membered carbon chain of n-pentane and the CC bond of 1-hexene inhibited six-membered cyclic species formation, decreasing CNT and benzene yields. This work revealed the structure-activity relationship between C5-C7 hydrocarbons and CNT growth, which may direct the process design and optimization of CNT synthesis from plastic pyrolysis gas.

RESUMO

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes array offers unique properties for various applications. Detaching them from the growth substrate, while preserving their vertical structure, is essential. Quartz, a cost-effective alternative to silicon wafers and metal-based substrates, can serve as both a reaction chamber and a growth substrate. However, the strong adhesive interaction with the quartz substrate remains an obstacle for further applications. Herein, we presented a simple and well-controlled exfoliation strategy assisted by the introduction of heteroatoms at root ends of a carbon nanotubes array. This strategy forms lower surface polarity of the carbon fragment to significantly reduce adhesion to the quartz substrate, which contributes to the effortless exfoliation. Furthermore, this scalable approach enables potential mass production on recyclable quartz substrates, enhancing the cost-effectiveness and efficiency. This work can establish a solid foundation for cost-competitive carbon nanotube-based technologies, offering a promising avenue for their widespread applications.

RESUMO

Functional liquid-based interfaces, with their inhomogeneous regions that emphasize the functionalized liquids, have attracted much interest as a versatile platform for a broad spectrum of applications, from chemical manufacturing to practical uses. These interfaces leverage the physicochemical characteristics of liquids, alongside dynamic behaviors induced by macroscopic wettability and microscopic molecular exchange balance, to allow for tailored properties within their functional structures. In this Minireview, we provide a foundational overview of these functional interfaces, based on the structural investigations and molecular mechanisms of interaction forces that directly modulate functionalities. Then, we discuss design strategies that have been employed in recent applications, and the crucial aspects that require focus. Finally, we highlight the current challenges in functional liquid-based interfaces and provide a perspective on future research directions.

RESUMO

Li-rich layered oxides are considered as one of the most promising cathode materials for secondary lithium batteries due to their high specific capacities, but the issue of continuous voltage decay during cycling hinders their market entry. Increasing the Ni content in Li-rich materials is assumed to be an effective way to address this issue and attracts recent research interests. However, a high Ni content may induce increased intrinsic reactivity of materials, resulting in severe side reactions with the electrolyte. Thus, a comprehensive study to differentiate the two effects of the Ni content on the cell performance with Li-rich cathode is carried out in this work. Herein, it is demonstrated that a properly dosed amount of Ni can effectively suppress the voltage decay in Li-rich cathodes, while over-loading of Ni, on the contrary, can cause structural instability, Ni dissolution, and nonuniform Li deposition during cycling as well as severe oxygen loss. This work offers a deep understanding on the impacts of Ni content in Li-rich materials, which can be a good guidance for the future design of such cathodes for high energy density lithium batteries.

RESUMO

Unlike bibenzyls derived from the vascular plants, lunularic acid (LA), a key precursor for macrocyclic bisbibenzyl synthesis in nonvascular liverworts, exhibits the absence of one hydroxy group within the A ring. It was hypothesized that both polyketide reductase (PKR) and stilbenecarboxylate synthase 1 (STCS1) were involved in the LA biosynthesis, but the underlined mechanisms have not been clarified. This study used bioinformatics analysis with molecular, biochemical and physiological approaches to characterize STCS1s and PKRs involved in the biosynthesis of LA. The results indicated that MpSTCS1s from Marchantia polymorpha catalyzed both C2→C7 aldol-type and C6→C1 Claisen-type cyclization using dihydro-p-coumaroyl-coenzyme A (CoA) and malonyl-CoA as substrates to yield a C6-C2-C6 skeleton of dihydro-resveratrol following decarboxylation and the C6-C3-C6 type of phloretin in vitro. The protein-protein interaction of PKRs with STCS1 (PPI-PS) was revealed and proved essential for LA accumulation when transiently co-expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana. Moreover, replacement of the active domain of STCS1 with an 18-amino-acid fragment from the chalcone synthase led to the PPI-PS greatly decreasing and diminishing the formation of LA. The replacement also increased the chalcone formation in STCS1s. Our results highlight a previously unrecognized PPI in planta that is indispensable for the formation of LA.

RESUMO

Fenofibrate, a marketed peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) agonist, has been widely used for treating severe hypertriglyceridemia and mixed dyslipidemia. As a canonical prodrug, fenofibrate can be rapidly hydrolyzed to release the active metabolite (fenofibric acid) in vivo, but the crucial enzyme(s) responsible for fenofibrate hydrolysis and the related hydrolytic kinetics have not been well-investigated. This study aimed to assign the key organs and crucial enzymes involved in fenofibrate hydrolysis in humans, as well as reveal the impact of fenofibrate hydrolysis on its non-PPAR-mediated biologic activities. Our results demonstrated that fenofibrate could be rapidly hydrolyzed in the preparations from both human liver and lung to release fenofibric acid. Reaction phenotyping assays coupling with chemical inhibition assays showed that human carboxylesterase 1A (hCES1A) played a predominant role in fenofibrate hydrolysis in human liver and lung, while human carboxylesterase 2A (hCES2A) and human monoacylglycerol esterase (hMAGL) contributed to a very lesser extent. Kinetic analyses showed that fenofibrate could be rapidly hydrolyzed by hCES1A in human liver preparations, while the inherent clearance of hCES1A-catalyzed fenofibrate hydrolysis is much higher (>200-fold) than than that of hCES2A or hMAGL. Biologic assays demonstrated that both fenofibrate and fenofibric acid showed very closed Nrf2 agonist effects, but fenofibrate hydrolysis strongly weakens its inhibitory effects against both hCES2A and hNtoum. Collectively, our findings reveal that the liver is the major organ and hCES1A is the predominant enzyme-catalyzing fenofibrate hydrolysis in humans, while fenofibrate hydrolysis significantly reduces inhibitory effects of fenofibrate against serine hydrolases. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Fenofibrate can be completely converted to fenofibric acid in humans and subsequently exert its pharmacological effects, but the hydrolytic pathways of fenofibrate in humans have not been well-investigated. This study reported that the liver was the predominant organ and human carboxylesterase 1A was the crucial enzyme involved in fenofibrate hydrolysis in humans.

RESUMO

Obesity, now widespread all over the world, is frequently associated with several chronic diseases. Human pancreatic lipase (hPL) is a crucial digestive enzyme responsible for the digestion of dietary lipids in humans, and the inhibition of hPL is effective in reducing triglyceride intake and thus preventing and treating obesity. In this work, a practical sequential screening strategy was developed to construct a highly selective near-infrared fluorogenic substrate 7-STCFC for hPL. Under physiological conditions, 7-STCFC can be rapidly hydrolyzed by hPL to form 7-HTCFC, which triggers 254-fold NIR signal enhancement at 670 nm. 7-STCFC was successfully applied for the sensing and imaging of endogenous PL in living systems (including living cells, tissues and organs) with low cytotoxicity and high imaging resolution. Moreover, a high-throughput screening platform was established using 7-STCFC, and the inhibitory effects of 94 kinds of herbs toward hPL were evaluated. Among them, Pu-erh tea stood out with outstanding hPL inhibitory effects, and the inhibitory ingredients and involved inhibitory mechanism were further revealed, which strongly facilitates the discovery of novel anti-obesity agents targeting hPL. Collectively, these findings suggested that our strategy was practical to develop an isoform-specific fluorogenic substrate for a target enzyme, and 7-STCFC was a powerful tool for monitoring PL activity in complex biological systems with value for exploring physiological functions and rapid screening of inhibitors.

RESUMO

Plastic waste is causing serious environment pollution and its efficient disposal is attracting more and more attention. The use of catalysts not only reduced the degradation temperature of plastic wastes but also facilitated the production of valuable chemicals. Herein, mesopores were introduced into HZSM-5 zeolites by alkali and acid treatment, which was expected to eliminate the diffusion resistance caused by bulky polymer molecules and improve the catalytic activity. It was found that HZSM-5 zeolites enhanced PE, PP and PS degradation, and an increase of mesopore volume further improved the catalytic activity and reduced the activation energy. For example, the use of HZSM-5 in PP degradation decreased the activation energy from 146.9 kJ mol-1 to 93.1 kJ mol-1, and mesopore-rich HZSM-5 further decreased the activation energy to 84.0 kJ mol-1. The molecular diameter of the PP fragment was obtained by theoretical calculations, and it was close to 1.6 nm, which was significantly higher than the micropore diameter of HZSM-5 zeolites (0.5-0.6 nm) while lower than the mesopore diameter. It was concluded that the presence of mesopores provided the place and space for plastics degradation.

RESUMO

Ferroelectric thin film capacitors have attracted increasing attention because of their high energy storage density and fast charge-discharge speed, but less attention has been paid to the realization of flexible capacitors for wearable electronics and power systems. In this work, flexible xMn-BiMg0.5 Ti0.7 O3 (xMn-BMT0.7 ) thin film capacitors with ultrahigh energy storage density and good stability are deposited on mica substrate. The introduction of excess TiO2 with an amorphous structure contributes to the forming of the polar nano regions, resulting in the reduced ferroelectric hysteresis. In order to further improve the energy storage performance, Mn doping increases the polarization by regulating chemical pressure in the lattices and inhibits the valence change of Ti4+ . Especially in the 1.5% Mn-BMT0.7 film capacitor, an ultrahigh energy storage density of 124 J cm-3 and an outstanding efficiency of 77% are obtained, which is one of the best energy storage performances recorded for ferroelectric capacitors. In addition, the flexible ferroelectric film capacitor also exhibits good thermal stability (25-200 °C), high frequency reliability (500 Hz-10 kHz), excellent electrical (108 cycles), and mechanical (104 cycles) fatigue properties. This work is expected to pave the way for the application of BMT-based thin film capacitors in flexible energy storage systems.

RESUMO

The formation of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) in "water-in-salt" electrolyte (WiSE) expands the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes beyond 3.0 V. However, the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction that drives anode corrosion, cracking, and the subsequent reformation of SEI still occurs, compromising long-term cycling performance of the batteries. To improve cycling stability, an unsaturated monomer acrylamide (AM) is introduced as an electrolyte additive, whose presence in WiSE reduces its viscosity and improves ionic conductivity. Upon charging, AM electropolymerizes into polyacrylamide, as confirmed both experimentally and computationally. The in situ polymer constitutes effective protection layers at both anode and cathode surfaces, and enables LiMn2 O4 ||L-TiO2 full cells with high specific capacity (157 mAh g-1 at 1 C), long-term cycling stability (80% capacity retention within 200 cycles at 1 C), and high rate capability (79 mAh g-1 at 30 C). The in situ electropolymerization found in this work provides an alternative and highly effective strategy to design protective interphases at the negative and positive electrodes for high-voltage aqueous batteries of lithium-ion or beyond.

RESUMO

Serum uric acid can affect endothelial function, and hyperuricaemia-induced endothelial dysfunction is involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. As endothelial dysfunction is also a main pathogenic mechanism of erectile dysfunction (ED), the present study aims to evaluate the relationship between hyperuricaemia and ED via systemic review and meta-analysis. Five cohort studies and six cross-sectional studies on hyperuricaemia and ED, including a total of 454,510 participants, were recruited. Odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI) were adopted to estimate the relationship between hyperuricaemia and ED. Overall risk on effects of urate-lowering therapy (ULT) were analysed. In addition, subgroup analyses on study design, populations, age stratification and the object were conducted. In the patients with hyperuricaemia, the risk of ED was 1.59-fold higher than (pooled OR = 1.59, 95% CI [1.29, 1.97]) the non-hyperuricaemia counterparts. Urate-lowing therapy (ULT) in these hyperuricaemia patients reduced the risk of ED by 27% (OR = 1.27, 95% CI [1.14, 1.41]). After subgroup analysis, the association between hyperuricaemia and ED remained significant apart from the >60 years subgroup. Hyperuricaemia is an important risk factor of ED, while ULT can reduce the risk of ED in hyperuricaemia. This study suggests that hyperuricaemia-associated endothelial dysfunction may also underlie the pathogenesis of ED in these patients.

RESUMO

Parkinson's disease (PD) is generally considered a sporadic disorder, but a strong genetic background is often found. The aim of this study was to identify the underlying genetic cause of PD in two affected siblings and to subsequently assess the role of mutations in Cathepsin B (CTSB) in susceptibility to PD. A typical PD family was identified and whole-exome sequencing was performed in two affected siblings. Variants of interest were validated using Sanger sequencing. CTSB p.Gly284Val was genotyped in 2077 PD patients and 615 unrelated healthy controls from the Czech Republic, Ireland, Poland, Ukraine, and the USA. The gene burden analysis was conducted for the CTSB gene in an additional 769 PD probands from Mayo Clinic Florida familial PD cohort. CTSB expression and activity in patient-derived fibroblasts and controls were evaluated by qRT-PCR, western blot, immunocytochemistry, and enzymatic assay. The CTSB p.Gly284Val candidate variant was only identified in affected family members. Functional analysis of CTSB patient-derived fibroblasts under basal conditions did not reveal overt changes in endogenous expression, subcellular localization, or enzymatic activity in the heterozygous carrier of the CTSB variant. The identification of the CTSB p.Gly284Val may support the hypothesis that the CTSB locus harbors variants with differing penetrance that can determine the disease risk.

RESUMO

Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) capture and storage technologies are promising to limit CO2 emission from anthropogenic activities, to achieve carbon neutrality goals. CO2 capture requires one to separate CO2 from other gases, and therefore a gas flow system that exhibits discernible gating behaviors for CO2 would be very useful. Here we propose a self-adaptive CO2 gas valve composed of chemically responsive liquid gating systems. The transmembrane critical pressures of the liquid gate vary upon the presence of CO2 , due to the superamphiphiles assembled by poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) and oleic acid in gating liquids that are protonated specifically by CO2 . It is shown that the valve can perform self-adaptive regulation for specific gases and different concentrations of CO2 . This protonation-induced liquid gating mechanism opens a potential platform for applications of CO2 separators, detectors, sensors and beyond.
