RESUMO

We assessed patellofemoral joint function by combining the measurement of maximal isometric extensor torque at the knee with clinical and radiological measurements in order to calculate the patellofemoral contact force. Eighteen volunteers established the normal ranges of results and the reliability of the system. Of the 39 patients with a variety of knee problems, 29 had anterior knee pain, and all had a subsequent arthroscopy. Patients with anterior knee pain and lesions in the patellar cartilage had significantly reduced isometric contact forces, but those with normal patellofemoral cartilage had normal contact forces. Our method may be useful in providing an objective assessment of anterior knee pain and a quantitative means of monitoring its treatment.

RESUMO

The radiological anatomy of the pyloro-duodenal area after pyloroplasty is described. The deformity produced by pyloroplasty is shown in the patient with a normal pylorus and duodenum and in the patient with a duodenal ulcer and stenosis. From a study of 24 asymptomatic patients after pyloroplasty it is possible to recognize the radiological features that indicate a successful operation.

RESUMO

Page-oriented optical memories combine high capacity with massive data-transfer rates and could provide the next generation of secondary storage systems. Several technological barriers need to be overcome before these memories become commercial products. One is the need for efficient interfaces to electronic computers. To assist in the analysis of all issues pertaining to such an interface, we have developed the optical storage interactive simulator (oasis), an interactive software tool. oasis can simulate data-encoding schemes, noise sources present in a particular memory system, and data-recovery mechanisms. Bit-error rates and other useful statistics can also be measured. The user has the option of studying the effects of individual error sources to the system output or of applying several of them in any order dictated by the system architecture. This multifaceted analysis will assist the user in evaluating the effectiveness of a particular error-correcting code and choosing the right one for the system.
