RESUMO

Ternary Pt-based structures are a positive progress in addressing the disadvantages of monometallic and bimetallic Pt-based alloys for the electrochemical oxidation process of simple alcohols, which is a vital half-reaction in fuel cell technologies. We herein report a facile NaBH4-assisted ethylene glycol reduction process for fabricating a series of nanosized PtRuNi ternary alloys to explore the relationship between physicochemical properties and electrocatalytic behaviors for the acidic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Owing to a balance between lattice strain and synergistic effects, the Pt60Ru20Ni20/C electrocatalyst shows the highest MOR efficiency with the mass activity/specific activity of 844.48 mA mgMetal-1/1.93 mA cm-2, being a 1.94 and 2.38 times increase compared to those of the PtRu catalyst, respectively. Also, the Pt60Ru20Ni20/C catalyst possesses superior CO-tolerance and durability in strongly acidic electrolytes. This work suggests that optimizing the surface strain and electronic effects can boost the overall MOR efficiency of multicomponent Pt-based materials, which can help to further develop next-generation catalysts for energy conversion-related technologies.

INTRODUCTION: Eicosanoids are biological lipids that serve as both activators and suppressors of inflammation. Eicosanoid pathways are implicated in synovitis and joint destruction in inflammatory arthritis, yet they might also have a protective function, underscoring the need for a comprehensive understanding of how eicosanoid pathways might be imbalanced. Until recently, sensitive and scalable methods for detecting and quantifying a high number of eicosanoids have not been available. OBJECTIVE: Here, we intend to describe a detailed eicosanoid profiling in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and evaluate correlations with parameters of disease activity. METHODS: Forty-one patients with PsA, all of whom satisfied the CASPAR classification criteria for PsA, were studied. Outcomes reflecting the activity of peripheral arthritis as well as skin psoriasis, Disease Activity Score (DAS)28, Clinical Disease Index (CDAI) and Body Surface Area (BSA) were assessed. Serum eicosanoids were determined by LC-MS, and the correlation between metabolite levels and disease scores was evaluated. RESULTS: Sixty-six eicosanoids were identified by reverse-phase LC/MS. Certain eicosanoids species including several pro-inflammatory eicosanoids such as PGE2, HXB3 or 6,15-dk,dh,PGF1a correlated with joint disease score. Several eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-derived eicosanoids, which associate with anti-inflammatory properties, such as 11-HEPE, 12-HEPE and 15-HEPE, correlated with DAS28 (Disease Activity Score) and CDAI (Clinical Disease Activity Index) as well. Of interest, resolvin D1, a DHA-derived anti-inflammatory eicosanoid, was down-regulated in patients with high disease activity. CONCLUSION: Both pro- and anti-inflammatory eicosanoids were associated with joint disease score, potentially representing pathways of harm as well as benefit. Further studies are needed to determine whether these eicosanoid species might also play a role in the pathogenesis of joint inflammation in PsA.

A common problem in genomics is to test for associations between two or more genomic features, typically represented as intervals interspersed across the genome. Existing methodologies can test for significant pairwise associations between two genomic intervals; however, they cannot test for associations involving multiple sets of intervals. This limits our ability to uncover more complex, yet biologically important associations between multiple sets of genomic features. We introduce GINOM (Genomic INterval Overlap Model), a new method that enables testing of significant associations between multiple genomic features. We demonstrate GINOM's ability to identify higher-order associations with both simulated and real data. In particular, we used GINOM to explore L1 retrotransposable element insertion bias in lung cancer and found a significant pairwise association between L1 insertions and heterochromatic marks. Unlike other methods, GINOM also detected an association between L1 insertions and gene bodies marked by a facultative heterochromatic mark, which could explain the observed bias for L1 insertions towards cancer-associated genes.

This study aimed to produce bacterial cellulose from paper waste sludge (PWS) as a method of utilizing the cellulose source from the remaining pulp in the material. Initially, PWS was hydrolyzed by sulfuric acid to create an enriched-reducing sugar hydrolysate. One-factor experiments were conducted with a fixed amount of PWS (5 g) to investigate the influence of hydrolysis conditions, including water, sulfuric acid addition, temperature, and retention time, on the production yield of reducing sugars. Based on these results, the Box-Behnken model was designed to optimize the hydrolysis reaction. The optimal hydrolysis conditions were 10 ml/g of the sulfuric acid solution (30.9%) at 105.5 °C for 90 min of retention time 0.81 (gGE/g PWS), corresponding to a conversion yield of 40.5%). Subsequently, 100 ml of the filtered and neutralized PWS hydrolysate was used as the culture to produce the bacterial cellulose (BC) using Acetobacter xylinum, which produced 12 g/L of bacterial cellulose. The conversion yield of bacterial cellulose calculated as the ratio of the weight of produced bacterial cellulose to that of cellulose in PWS reached 33.3%. The structure of the obtained BC was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to indicate the formation of nano-cellulose fiber networks. This research proposed a combined method to convert paper waste sludge into bacterial cellulose, demonstrating the potential for waste utilization and sustainable production of paper industries for added-value products.

The hybridization of MoPt with ultralow Pt content (2.81 wt%) on a rutile Ti0.9Ir0.1O2-C composite (MoPt/Ti0.9Ir0.1O2-C) is fabricated by a self-growth-assisted reduction route, serving as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Due to unique structural features, the MoPt/Ti0.9Ir0.1O2-C catalyst requires an extremely low overpotential of 21.35 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and an impressive HER mass activity of 849.36 mA mgMetal-1 at 300 mV overpotential. In addition, the as-made HER electrocatalyst shows superior catalytic stability and chemical after 10 h of testing.

A synergistic multilayer membrane design is necessary to satisfy a multitude of requirements of an ideal wound dressing. In this study, trilayer dressings with asymmetric wettability, composed of electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) base membranes coated with oligomer chitosan (COS) in various concentrations of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), are fabricated for wound dressing application. The membranes are expected to synergize the hygroscopic, antibacterial, hemostatic, and biocompatible properties of PCL and COS. The wound dressing was coated by spraying the solution of 3% COS and 6% PVP on the PCL base membrane (PVP6-3) three times, which shows good interaction with biological subjects, including bacterial strains and blood components. PVP6-3 samples confirm the diameter of inhibition zones of 20.0 ± 2.5 and 17.9 ± 2.5 mm against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. The membrane induces hemostasis with a blood clotting index of 74% after 5 min of contact. In the mice model, wounds treated with PVP6-3 closed 95% of the area after 10 days. Histological study determines the progression of skin regeneration with the construction of granulation tissue, new vascular systems, and hair follicles. Furthermore, the newly-growth skin shares structural resemblances to that of native tissue. This study suggests a simple approach to a multi-purpose wound dressing for clinical treatment.

The rapid growth of point-of-care polysomnographic alternatives has necessitated standardized evaluation and validation frameworks. The current average across participant validation methods may overestimate the agreement between wearable sleep tracker devices and polysomnography (PSG) systems because of the high base rate of sleep during the night and the interindividual difference across the sampling population. This study proposes an evaluation framework to assess the aggregating differences of the sleep architecture features and the chronologically epoch-by-epoch mismatch of the wearable sleep tracker devices and the PSG ground truth. An AASM-based sleep stage categorizing method was proposed to standardize the sleep stages scored by different types of wearable trackers. Sleep features and sleep stage architecture were extracted from the PSG and the wearable device's hypnograms. Therefrom, a localized quantifier index was developed to characterize the local mismatch of sleep scoring. We evaluated different commonly used wearable sleep tracking devices with the data collected from 22 different subjects over 30 nights of 8-h sleeping. The proposed localization quantifiers can characterize the chronologically localized mismatches over the sleeping time. The outperformance of the proposed method over existing evaluation methods was reported. The proposed evaluation method can be utilized for the improvement of the sensor design and scoring algorithm.

Recent findings demonstrate sex-related differences in the neurobiological mechanisms by which emotional arousal influences memory, and raise questions about the extent to which memory for emotional events may differ between males and females. Here we examine whether sex-related differences exist in the recall of central (gist) information and peripheral detail from an emotional story. Healthy subjects viewed a brief, narrated slide-show containing emotional elements in its middle section. One week later, they received an incidental multiple-choice recognition test for the story. Following the test, each subject completed the BEM Sex-Role Inventory, an assessment of sex-related masculine and feminine traits. The results reveal no differences in recall of either central or peripheral story information when considering the performance of actual men and women, but a significant difference when considering male and females as determined by their BEM test scores. "BEM" males (subjects with net male BEM scores) showed significantly enhanced recall of central emotional information. "BEM" females did not. Both groups showed significantly enhanced recall of peripheral emotional information, although this effect appeared larger in BEM females than in BEM males. The influences of "BEM" sex and type of information (central, peripheral) significantly interacted to influence emotional memory performance. These findings confirm the existence of sex-related influences in the recall of emotional information, and suggest that sex-related traits, rather than actual sex per se, may be a more sensitive indicator of these influences.
