RESUMO

PURPOSE: To predict hematoma growth in intracerebral hemorrhage patients by combining clinical findings with non-contrast CT imaging features analyzed through deep learning. METHODS: Three models were developed to predict hematoma expansion (HE) in 572 patients. We utilized multi-task learning for both hematoma segmentation and prediction of expansion: the Image-to-HE model processed hematoma slices, extracting features and computing a normalized DL score for HE prediction. The Clinical-to-HE model utilized multivariate logistic regression on clinical variables. The Integrated-to-HE model combined image-derived and clinical data. Significant clinical variables were selected using forward selection in logistic regression. The two models incorporating clinical variables were statistically validated. RESULTS: For hematoma detection, the diagnostic performance of the developed multi-task model was excellent (AUC, 0.99). For expansion prediction, three models were evaluated for predicting HE. The Image-to-HE model achieved an accuracy of 67.3%, sensitivity of 81.0%, specificity of 64.0%, and an AUC of 0.76. The Clinical-to-HE model registered an accuracy of 74.8%, sensitivity of 81.0%, specificity of 73.3%, and an AUC of 0.81. The Integrated-to-HE model, merging both image and clinical data, excelled with an accuracy of 81.3%, sensitivity of 76.2%, specificity of 82.6%, and an AUC of 0.83. The Integrated-to-HE model, aligning closest to the diagonal line and indicating the highest level of calibration, showcases superior performance in predicting HE outcomes among the three models. CONCLUSION: The integration of clinical findings with non-contrast CT imaging features analyzed through deep learning showed the potential for improving the prediction of HE in acute spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage patients.

OBJECTIVES: Addictions have recently been classified as substance use disorder (SUD) and behavioral addiction (BA), but the concept of BA is still debatable. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further neuroscientific research to understand the mechanisms of BA to the same extent as SUD. The present study used machine learning (ML) algorithms to investigate the neuropsychological and neurophysiological aspects of addictions in individuals with internet gaming disorder (IGD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHODS: We developed three models for distinguishing individuals with IGD from those with AUD, individuals with IGD from healthy controls (HCs), and individuals with AUD from HCs using ML algorithms, including L1-norm support vector machine, random forest, and L1-norm logistic regression (LR). Three distinct feature sets were used for model training: a unimodal-electroencephalography (EEG) feature set combined with sensor- and source-level feature; a unimodal-neuropsychological feature (NF) set included sex, age, depression, anxiety, impulsivity, and general cognitive function, and a multimodal (EEG + NF) feature set. RESULTS: The LR model with the multimodal feature set used for the classification of IGD and AUD outperformed the other models (accuracy: 0.712). The important features selected by the model highlighted that the IGD group had differential delta and beta source connectivity between right intrahemispheric regions and distinct sensor-level EEG activities. Among the NFs, sex and age were the important features for good model performance. CONCLUSIONS: Using ML techniques, we demonstrated the neurophysiological and neuropsychological similarities and differences between IGD (a BA) and AUD (a SUD).

A series of homochiral coordination polymers (HCPs), [M2 (SIAP)2 (bpy)2 ] [M(S)] and [M2 (RIAP)2 (bpy)2 ] [M(R)] (M = Zn or Cd, SIAP or RIAP = (S,S)- or (R,R)- 2,2'-(isophthaloylbis(azanediyl))di-propionic acid, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), is successfully synthesized through solvothermal reactions, self-assembling d10 metal cations, chiral dicarboxylic ligands, and π-conjugated bipyridyl ligands. The HCPs crystallize in the extremely rare triclinic chiral space group, P1, and present 3D framework structures attributed to the strong intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking. Due to the unique crystal structures, the title compounds reveal efficient photoluminescence emission across a broad visible range, with significant brightness and color tuning by varying the excitation wavelength. Moreover, they exhibit efficient phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) with very high laser-induced damage thresholds, essential for high-power nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Intriguingly, the title compounds exhibit a measurable contrast in the SHG response under right- and left-handed circularly polarized excitation, thereby providing a unique case of SHG circular dichroism from the chiral centers of SIAP2- or RIAP2- ligand packed in the noncentrosymmetric environment. These exceptional attributes position these HCPs as promising candidates for multifunctional materials, with potential applications ranging from NLO devices to tailored luminescent systems with polarization control.

Cu2TSiS4 (T = Mn and Fe) polycrystalline and single-crystal materials were prepared with high-temperature solid-state and chemical vapor transport methods, respectively. The polar crystal structure (space group Pmn21) consists of chains of corner-sharing and distorted CuS4, Mn/FeS4, and SiS4 tetrahedra, which is confirmed by Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data, X-ray single-crystal refinement, electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques. Magnetic measurements indicate that both compounds order antiferromagnetically at 8 and 14 K, respectively, which is supported by the temperature-dependent (100-2 K) neutron powder diffraction data. Additional magnetic reflections observed at 2 K can be modeled by magnetic propagation vectors k = (1/2,0,1/2) and k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) for Cu2MnSiS4 and Cu2FeSiS4, respectively. The refined antiferromagnetic structure reveals that the Mn/Fe spins are canted away from the ac plane by about 14°, with the total magnetic moments of Mn and Fe being 4.1(1) and 2.9(1) µB, respectively. Both compounds exhibit an SHG response with relatively modest second-order nonlinear susceptibilities. Density functional theory calculations are used to describe the electronic band structures.

A new copper indium selenide, Ba3.5Cu7.55In1.15Se9, was synthesized by the KBr flux reaction at 800 °C. The compound crystallizes with orthorhombic Pnma, a = 46.1700(12) Å, b = 4.26710(10) Å, c = 19.8125(5) Å, and Z = 8. The structural framework mainly consists of four sites of cubane-type defective M4Se3 (M = Cu, Cu/In) units with disordered Cu+/In3+ ions present at the part corner of each unit. The single crystal emits intense photoluminescence at 657 nm with a relative quantum yield (RQY) 0.2 times that of rhodamine 6G powder. The compound belongs to a direct band gap at 1.91 eV, analyzed by Tauc's plot, and the energy is close to the PL position. The Hall effect measurement on a pressed pellet reveals an n-type conductivity with a carrier concentration of 3.358 × 1017 cm-3 and a mobility of 24.331 cm2 V-1 s-1. Furthermore, the compound produces a strong nonlinear third-harmonic generation (THG), with an χS(3) value of 1.3 × 105 pm2/V2 comparable to 1.6 × 105 pm2/V2 for AgGaSe2 measured at 800 nm.

The isostructural heteroanionic compounds ß-LiAsS2-xSex (x = 0, 0.25, 1, 1.75, 2) show a positive correlation between selenium content and second-harmonic response and greatly outperform the industry standard AgGaSe2. These materials crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc as one-dimensional 1/∞ [AsQ2]- (Q = S, Se, S/Se) chains consisting of corner-sharing AsQ3 trigonal pyramids with charge-balancing Li+ atoms interspersed between the chains. LiAsS2-xSex melts congruently for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.75, but when the Se content exceeds x = 1.75, crystallization is complicated by a phase transition. This behavior is attributed to the ß- to α-phase transition present in LiAsSe2, which is observed in the Se-rich compositions. The band gap decreases with increasing Se content, starting at 1.63 eV (LiAsS2) and reaching 1.06 eV (ß-LiAsSe2). Second-harmonic generation measurements as a function of wavelength on powder samples of ß-LiAsS2-xSex show that these materials exhibit significantly higher nonlinearity than AgGaSe2 (d36 = 33 pm/V), reaching a maximum of 61.2 pm/V for LiAsS2. In comparison, single-crystal measurements for LiAsSSe yielded a deff = 410 pm/V. LiAsSSe, LiAsS0.25Se1.75, and ß-LiAsSe2 show phase-matching behavior for incident wavelengths exceeding 3 µm. The laser-induced damage thresholds from two-photon absorption processes are on the same order of magnitude as AgGaSe2, with S-rich materials slightly outperforming AgGaSe2 and Se-rich materials slightly underperforming AgGaSe2.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have emerged as an excellent platform for studying various excitonic matter under strong quantum and dielectric confinements. However, such effects can be seriously overestimated for Coulomb binding of two excitons to form a biexciton by a naive interpretation of the corresponding photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. By using 2D halide perovskite single crystals of [CH3(CH2)3NH3]2Pb1-xMnxBr4 (x = 0-0.09) as a model system, we investigated both population and relaxation kinetics of biexcitons as a function of excitation density, temperature, polarization, and Mn doping. We show that the biexciton is formed by binding of two dark excitons, which are partially bright, but they radiatively recombine to yield a bright exciton in the final state. This renders the spectral distance between the exciton peak and the biexciton peak as very different from the actual biexciton binding energy (ϕ) because of large bright-dark splitting. We show that Mn doping introduces paramagnetism to our 2D system and improves the biexciton stability as evidenced by increase in ϕ from 18.8 ± 0.7 to 20.0 ± 0.7 meV and the increase of the exciton-exciton capture coefficient C from 2.4 × 10-11 to 4.3 × 10-11cm2/ns within our doping range. The precisely determined ϕ values are significantly smaller than the previously reported ones, but they are consistent with the instability of the biexciton against thermal dissociation at room temperature. Our results demonstrate that electron-hole exchange interaction must be considered for precisely locating the biexciton level; therefore, the ϕ values should be reassessed for other 2D halide perovskites that even do not exhibit any dark exciton PL.

APbBr3 (A = Cs, CH3NH3) are prototype halide perovskites having bandgaps of 2.30-2.35 eV at room temperature, rendering their apparent color nearly identical (bright orange but opaque). Upon optical excitation, they emit bright photoluminescence (PL) arising from carrier recombination whose spectral features are also similar. At 10 K, however, the apparent color of CsPbBr3 becomes transparent yellow, whereas that of CH3NH3PbBr3 does not change significantly due to the presence of an indirect Rashba gap. With increasing the excitation level, evolution of the PL spectra, which are excitonic at 10 K, reveals the emergence of P-band emission arising from inelastic exciton-exciton scattering. Based on the spectral location of the P-band, exciton binding energies are determined to be 21.6 ± 2.0 and 38.3 ± 3.0 meV for CsPbBr3 and CH3NH3PbBr3, respectively. Intriguingly, upon further increase in the exciton density, electron-hole plasma appears in CsPbBr3 as evidenced by both red-shift and broadening of the PL. This phase, however, does not occur in CH3NH3PbBr3 presumably due to polaronic effects. Although the A-site cation is believed not to directly impact optical properties of APbBr3, our results underscore its critical role, which destines different high-density phases and apparent color at low temperatures.

The mixed cation compounds Na1-xKxAsSe2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na0.1K0.9AsS2 crystallize in the polar noncentrosymmetric space group Cc. The AAsQ2 (A = alkali metals, Q = S, Se) family features one-dimensional (1D) 1/∞[AQ2-] chains comprising corner-sharing pyramidal AQ3 units in which the packing of these chains is dependent on the alkali metals. The parallel 1/∞[AQ2-] chains interact via short As···Se contacts, which increase in length when the fraction of K atoms is increased. The increase in the As···Se interchain distance increases the band gap from 1.75 eV in γ-NaAsSe2 to 2.01 eV in Na0.35K0.65AsSe2, 2.07 eV in Na0.2K0.8AsSe2, and 2.18 eV in Na0.1K0.9AsS2. The Na1-xKxAsSe2 (x = 0.8, 0.65) compounds melt congruently at approximately 316 °C. Wavelength-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements on powder samples of Na1-xKxAsSe2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na0.1K0.9AsS2 suggest that Na0.2K0.8AsSe2 and Na0.1K0.9AsS2 have the highest SHG response and exhibit significantly higher laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs). Theoretical SHG calculations on Na0.5K0.5AsSe2 confirm its SHG response with the highest value of d33 = 22.5 pm/V (χ333(2) = 45.0 pm/V). The effective nonlinearity for a randomly oriented powder is calculated to be deff = 18.9 pm/V (χeff(2) = 37.8 pm/V), which is consistent with the experimentally obtained value of deff = 16.5 pm/V (χeff(2) = 33.0 pm/V). Three-photon absorption is the dominant mechanism for the optical breakdown of the compounds under intense excitation at 1580 nm, with Na0.2K0.8AsSe2 exhibiting the highest stability.

OBJECTIVES: So far, dysfunction in mental rotation has been assessed in relation to the left- or right-sided CRPS. Here we examined mental rotation in patients with upper or lower limb CRPS. Considering the potential role of socio-emotional functioning on the perception of body image, we further investigated the association between performance on mental rotation and socio-emotional characteristics. METHODS: We examined the performance of 36 patients with upper or lower limb CRPS on the limb laterality recognition. Accuracy and response times for pictures of hands and feet at 4 rotation angles were evaluated. Socio-emotional functioning was measured by the Interpersonal Reactivity Scale and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale. RESULTS: Patients with upper limb pain showed longer RTs to recognize the laterality of hands than feet (P = 0.002), whereas patients with lower limb pain showed longer RTs for feet than hands (P = 0.039). Exploratory correlation analyses revealed that RTs for feet were negatively correlated with the levels of empathic ability to take another's perspective (P = 0.006) and positively correlated with the level of emotional difficulty in identifying feelings (P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to report selectively impaired mental rotation of hands vs feet in patients with upper or lower limb CRPS. The findings suggest that impaired mental rotation derives from relative deficits in the representation of the affected limb. Correlations between impaired mental rotation and socio-emotional inability indicate that an altered body schema may be closely associated with impaired social cognitive aspects in CRPS patients.

BACKGROUND: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) can increase populations of myeloid-derived suppressor cells, innate immune suppressors that play an immunoregulatory role in antitumor immunity. However, the roles of myeloid-derived suppressor cells and G-CSF in renal ischemia-reperfusion injury remain unclear. METHODS: We used mouse models of ischemia-reperfusion injury to investigate whether G-CSF can attenuate renal injury by increasing infiltration of myeloid-derived suppressor cells into kidney tissue. RESULTS: G-CSF treatment before ischemia-reperfusion injury subsequently attenuated acute renal dysfunction, tissue injury, and tubular apoptosis. Additionally, G-CSF treatment suppressed renal infiltration of macrophages and T cells as well as renal levels of IL-6, MCP-1, IL-12, TNF-α, and IFN-γ, but it increased levels of IL-10, arginase-1, and reactive oxygen species. Moreover, administering G-CSF after ischemia-reperfusion injury improved the recovery of renal function and attenuated renal fibrosis on day 28. G-CSF treatment increased renal infiltration of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (F4/80-CD11b+Gr-1int), especially the granulocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cell population (CD11b+Ly6GintLy6Clow); splenic F4/80-CD11b+Gr-1+ cells sorted from G-CSF-treated mice displayed higher levels of arginase-1, IL-10, and reactive oxygen species relative to those from control mice. Furthermore, these splenic cells effectively suppressed in vitro T cell activation mainly through arginase-1 and reactive oxygen species, and their adoptive transfer attenuated renal injury. Combined treatment with anti-Gr-1 and G-CSF showed better renoprotective effects than G-CSF alone, whereas preferential depletion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells by pep-G3 or gemcitabine abrogated the beneficial effects of G-CSF against renal injury. CONCLUSIONS: G-CSF induced renal myeloid-derived suppressor cells, thereby attenuating acute renal injury and chronic renal fibrosis after ischemia-reperfusion injury. These results suggest therapeutic potential of myeloid-derived suppressor cells and G-CSF in renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Eighteen new quaternary chalcogenides AGaM'Q4 (A+ = K+, Rb+, Cs+, Tl+; M'4+ = Ge4+, Sn4+; Q2- = S2-, Se2-) have been prepared by solid-state syntheses and structurally characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. These new phases crystallize in a variety of layered structure types. The tin analogues also adopt an extended three-dimensional network structure as polymorphs. The polymorphism and phase-stability in these cases were studied by thermal analysis and high-temperature in situ X-ray powder diffraction. All compounds are semiconductors with the colored selenides absorbing light in the infrared-green region (1.8 eV < Eg < 2.3 eV) and the mostly white sulfides absorbing light in the blue-ultraviolet range (2.5 eV < Eg < 3.6 eV). Based on third-harmonic generation (THG) measurements, the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) susceptibilities χ(3) of the new and previously reported AGaM'Q4 compounds were determined. These measurements revealed an apparent correlation between the THG response of the sample and its band gap, rather than the crystal structure type. While low-gap materials possess higher nonlinearity in general, we found that layered orthorhombic RbGaGeS4 exhibits an impressive χ(3) value (about four times larger than that of AgGaS2) even with a large band gap and shows stability under ambient conditions with no significant irradiation damage.

Recently, halide perovskites have gained significant attention from the perspective of efficient spintronics owing to the Rashba effect. This effect occurs as a consequence of strong spin-orbit coupling under a noncentrosymmetric environment, which can be dynamic and/or static. However, there exist intense debates on the origin of broken inversion symmetry since the halide perovskites typically crystallize into a centrosymmetric structure. In order to clarify the issue, we examine both dynamic and static effects in the all-inorganic CsPbBr3 and organic-inorganic CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3) perovskite single crystals by employing temperature- and polarization-dependent photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. The perovskite single crystals manifest the dynamic effect by photon recycling in the indirect Rashba gap, causing dual peaks in the photoluminescence. However, the effect vanishes in CsPbBr3 at low temperatures (<50 K) accompanied by a striking color change of the crystal, arising presumably from lower degrees of freedom for inversion symmetry breaking associated with the thermal motion of the spherical Cs cation compared with the polar MA cation in MAPbBr3. We also show that the static Rashba effect occurs only in MAPbBr3 below 90 K, presumably due to surface reconstruction via MA-cation ordering, which likely extends across a few layers from the crystal surface to the interior. We further demonstrate that this static Rashba effect can be completely suppressed upon surface treatment with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) coating. We believe that our results provide a rationale for the Rashba effects in halide perovskites.

The major obstacle to successful ABO blood group-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi KT) is antibody-mediated rejection (AMR). This study aimed to investigate transcriptional profiles through RNA sequencing and develop a minimally invasive diagnostic tool for discrimination between accommodation and early acute AMR in ABOi KT. Twenty-eight ABOi KT patients were selected: 18 with accommodation and 10 with acute AMR at the 10th day posttransplant protocol biopsy. Complete transcriptomes of their peripheral blood were analyzed by RNA sequencing. Candidate genes were selected by bioinformatics analysis, validated with quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and used to develop a classification model to diagnose accommodation. A total of 1385 genes were differentially expressed in accommodation compared with in AMR with P-adjusted < .05. Functional annotation and gene set enrichment analysis identified several immune-related and immunometabolic pathways. A 5-gene classification model including COX7A2L, CD69, CD14, CFD, and FOXJ3 was developed by logistic regression analysis. The model was further validated with an independent cohort and discriminated between accommodation and AMR with 92.7% sensitivity, 85.7% specificity, and 91.7% accuracy. Our study suggests that a classification model based on peripheral blood transcriptomics may allow minimally invasive diagnosis of acute AMR vs accommodation and subsequent patient-tailored immunosuppression in ABOi KT.

Ba10Fe3Sb7Se24 was synthesized using a KBr flux at 850 °C (Crystal Data: orthorhombic, Cmc21, a = 9.3412(2) Å, b = 44.6666(10) Å, c = 12.5496(3) Å, V = 5236.2(2) Å3, and Z = 4). The compound adopts a new three-dimensional framework constructed by the layer to include Fe2Se6 dimers and FeSe4 tetrahedra in the linkage motifs of [Fe2SbSe10] and [FeSb6Se14], respectively. Alternatively, the all Sb-based polyhedra are assembled as a semiconducting, perovskite-like framework lacking an inversion center where these Fe-based magnetic units are trapped within the interstices. The strong antiferromagnetic interaction is revealed by a high Curie constant of -113 K, but the curvature of field-cooled and zero-field-cooled magnetic susceptibilities bifurcating at ∼19 K is observed. The critical temperature is well verified by a broad peak of χM″ signal showing a rapid increase below 19 K under an alternating current field. The Fe2Se6 dimer featuring distorted edge-sharing tetrahedra to induce the spin-canted antiferromagnetic ordering strongly dominates such magnetic ordering. Finally, a weak hysteresis loop is clearly observed at 2.0 K. This dilute magnetic selenide displays a direct bandgap at ∼1.54 eV, analyzed by the Tauc equation. Interestingly, the use of second-harmonic-generation temperature dependence shows a turning point at ∼20 ± 1 K, which precisely corresponds to the magnetic ordering temperature within the error bar, thereby demonstrating the versatility of the technique for probing magnetic phase transition.

BACKGROUND: On February 21, 2020, 2 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in pilgrim travelers from Korea to Israel were identified. We investigated the source of infection, clinical features of COVID-19, and transmission potential of presymptomatic and asymptomatic cases. METHODS: All 39 pilgrim travelers were aggressively tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Their clinical features and possible source of infection were investigated by interview and review of their medical records. Ten confirmed cases without symptoms at the first sampling dates were selected for follow-up reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction tests. RESULTS: Of 39 pilgrim travelers, 30 (77%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Among the 30 positive COVID-19 cases, 4 (13%) were asymptomatic. Available follow-up cycle threshold values from 10 cases gradually increased over time and were lower during the presymptomatic period than during the postsymptomatic period. Out of 328 contacts related to the COVID-19 cases in the pilgrim travelers, 22 additional cases (7%) were confirmed with SARS-CoV-2 infections. Three tertiary cases were identified to be transmitted by presymptomatic secondary cases. CONCLUSION: To prevent transmission of COVID-19, we need to focus on presymptomatic and asymptomatic cases, and massive testing for SARS-CoV-2 is required. More research about the possibility of presymptomatic transmission over 2 days before symptom onset is required.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory B cells are a newly discovered B cell subset that suppresses immune responses. Recent studies found that both anti-CD45RB and anti-Tim-1 treatments regulate immune responses by inducing regulatory B cells; however, the role of these cells in renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is unknown. METHODS: Using mouse models, including T cell-deficient (RAG1 knockout and TCRα knockout) mice and B cell-deficient (µMT) mice, we investigated the effects of regulatory B cells and anti-CD45RB on IRI and the mechanisms underlying these effects. RESULTS: Adoptive transfer of regulatory B cells before or after IRI attenuated renal IRI. Anti-CD45RB treatment with or without anti-Tim-1 before IRI increased renal infiltration of CD19+Tim-1+ regulatory B and regulatory T cells. Anti-CD45RB decreased serum creatinine levels, pathologic injury score, tubular apoptosis, and proinflammatory cytokines levels, whereas IL-10 levels increased. Following IRI, anti-CD45RB with or without anti-Tim-1 also induced regulatory B cells, improving renal function and tubular regeneration. In RAG1 knockout mice with B cell transfer, TCRα knockout mice, and wild-type mice with T cell depletion, anti-CD45RB increased regulatory B cells and attenuated IRI. However, anti-CD45RB did not attenuate IRI in RAG1 knockout mice with T cell transfer or µMT mice and induced only mild improvement in wild-type mice with B cell depletion. Furthermore, B cell-deficient mice receiving B cells from IL-10 knockout mice (but not from wild-type mice) did not show renal protection against IRI when treated with anti-CD45RB. CONCLUSIONS: Anti-CD45RB treatment attenuated acute renal injury and facilitated renal recovery after IRI through induction of IL-10+ regulatory B cells, pointing to anti-CD45RB as a potential therapeutic strategy in renal IRI.

Catecholamines, including epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA), are associated with the response to stressful conditions. However, the relationships of catecholamines with intelligence and their interactions with stress remain unclear. This study assessed stress, intelligence quotient (IQ), and catecholamine levels in 70 healthy subjects to elucidate associations between catecholamines and stress, and between catecholamines and IQ. Additionally, the associations of catecholamines with stress and IQ were analyzed according to hemispheric dominance using the Brain Preference Indicator (BPI). There were positive correlations between the NE/E ratio and the somatization of stress but negative correlations between the E/NE ratio and the somatization of stress among the total number of subjects. In the right-brain-dominant group, a high E/DA ratio was correlated with low levels of stress, somatization and depression, and high NE/E and DA/E ratios were associated with high levels of somatization. In the left-brain-dominant group, high E levels were correlated with low levels of depression. In the total subjects, there were positive correlations between the NE/E and DA/E ratios and the sum of the vocabulary, arithmetic, picture arrangement, and block design IQ subtests. Thus, these catecholamines were associated with stress and IQ, which suggests that the autonomic functional regulation of catecholamine levels in relation to stress may also affect cognitive functions related to intelligence in the brain. Furthermore, the relationships between catecholamines and stress or IQ differed depending on hemispheric dominance, which suggests that the present results could be used to inform the development of personalized therapies based on hemispheric asymmetry.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-modified T cell therapy has the potential to improve the overall survival of patients with malignancies by enhancing the effectiveness of CAR T cells. Precisely predicting the effectiveness of various CAR T cells represents one of today's key unsolved problems in immunotherapy. Here, we predict the effectiveness of CAR-modified cells by evaluating the quality of the CAR-mediated immunological synapse (IS) by quantitation of F-actin, clustering of tumor antigen, polarization of lytic granules (LGs), and distribution of key signaling molecules within the IS. Long-term killing capability, but not secretion of conventional cytokines or standard 4-hr cytotoxicity, correlates positively with the quality of the IS in two different CAR T cells that share identical antigen specificity. Xenograft model data confirm that the quality of the IS in vitro correlates positively with performance of CAR-modified immune cells in vivo. Therefore, we propose that the quality of the IS predicts the effectiveness of CAR-modified immune cells, which provides a novel strategy to guide CAR therapy.

OBJECTIVES: In Korea, patients diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) in the army are typically discharged from the army; however, the course of the disease after discharge is not known. The purpose of this study was to investigate the course of CRPS that occurred in the army and to identify the influences of various clinical and psychosocial factors immediately before discharge on the disease course. METHODS: Clinical profiles and psychosocial status were collected from the medical records of 16 patients with CRPS type 1 who were discharged during the period between March 2017 and April 2018. The degree of improvement after discharge was assessed by follow-up evaluation through telephone contact. Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to identify clinical and psychosocial predictors for the rate of recovery. RESULTS: The median time to recovery after discharge was 39 weeks (95% confidence interval [CI] = 8.8-69.2 weeks). The sole predictor for time to recovery after discharge was the time period from the onset of pain to discharge. Each one-week increase in the duration of pain experienced in the military was associated with a 18.2% (95% CI = 5.3%-29.5%) reduction in the rate of recovery after discharge (P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Patients who experienced a short period of pain in the military demonstrated a relatively good prognosis after discharge. This may show how prolonged pain in the army could affect the experience of pain from a social point of view, in that it shows the disease course after a change in the social environment.
