RESUMO

Ice accretion or icing is a well-known phenomenon that entails a risk for the correct functioning of an aircraft. One of the areas more vulnerable to icing is the air data measuring system. This paper studies the icing protection offered by a heating system installed inside a multi-hole probe. The problem is initially solved analytically, creating a tool that can be used in order to predict the heating performance depending on the flying conditions. Later, the performance of the real system is investigated with a heated five-hole probe prototype in a wind tunnel experiment. The measured results are compared with the predictions made by the analytical model. Last, the icing protection provided by the system is estimated with respect to flying altitude and speed. As a result, a prediction tool that can be used in order to make quick icing risk predictions for straight cylindrical probes is delivered. Furthermore, the study provides some understanding about how parameters like altitude and air speed affect the occurrence of ice accretion.

PURPOSE: To investigate biomechanical properties of posterior transpedicular-transdiscal (TPTD) oblique lumbar screw fixation whereby the screw traverses the inferior pedicle across the posterior disc space into the super-adjacent body and lateral trapezoidal interbody spacer. METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen osteoligamentous human cadaveric spines (L1-S1) were tested in flexion-extension (FE), lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR), with pure bending moment set at 7.5 Nm. Surgical constructs included (1) intact spine; (2) bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) fixation at L3-L4; (3) TPTD screw fixation at L3-L4; (4) lateral L3-L4 discectomy; (5) TPTD screw fixation with lateral interbody spacer (TPTD+S); and (6) BPS fixation with lateral interbody spacer (BPS+S). Peak range of motion (ROM) at L3-L4 was normalized to intact for statistical analysis. RESULTS: In FE and LB, all posterior fixation with or without interbody spacers significantly reduced motion compared with intact and discectomy. BPS and BPS+S provided increased fixation in all planes of motion; significantly reducing FE and LB motion relative to TPTD (p = 0.005, p = 0.002 and p = 0.020, p = 0.004, respectively). In AR, only BPS significantly reduced normalized ROM to intact (p = 0.034); BPS+S provided greater fixation compared with TPTD+S (p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Investigators found less stiffness with TPTD screw fixation than with BPS regardless of immediate stabilization with lateral discectomy and spacer. Clinical use should be decided by required biomechanical performance, difficulty of installation, and extent of paraspinal tissue disruption.

Enrichment can improve animal physiological and psychological well-being. This study sought to promote more natural felid behavior and prevent development or incidence of stereotypies through the use of a feeding enrichment. Our objectives are to use fecal glucocorticoid metabolites values and behavioral observations to quantify the effectiveness of the enrichment device for two species of large cats, Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris; n = 2) and cougar (Felis concolor; n = 2). The feeding enrichment, a white-tailed deer carcass flank securely attached to an AussieDog Products(©) Felid 120-cm bungee, was implemented twice for each individual separated by 1 month. Fecal samples were obtained from each felid and analyzed for pre- and post-enrichment fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (FGM) concentrations using a cortisol enzyme immunoassay. An ethogram with 12 mutual exclusive behavioral categories was utilized to record behavioral responses to the enrichment. Results demonstrate that: 1) there were no differences (P > 0.05) in FGMs for either species between pre- and post-enrichment; 2) pacing decreased (P = 0.025) and walking increased (P = 0.017) after exposure to enrichment in both cougars; and 3) tigers reduced (P = 0.025) 'other' behavioral category after the first enrichment exposure and laid down more (P = 0.025) after the second enrichment exposure. The neutral hormonal impact on the animals coupled with the behavioral changes indicates that this enrichment is successful at altering the animals' behavior without adding physiological stress to their environments. These findings, combined with the low cost and versatility of the enrichment, promote the use of this enrichment to enhance large felid enclosures.

The MiniMovers (MM) APP combines motor development theory with creativity expertise and has been designed to provide parents with developmentally appropriate activities to support children's motor skills. This study investigates how MiniMovers activities enabled parents to support their children's physical development. Families participated in an 8-week MM programme of activities from the MM APP (Mini, Mighty and Mega levels), with pre- and post-intervention data collected using multiple tools (e.g., motion capture system, force plate, eye-tracking glasses, and videos). Mixed research methods were applied among children (N = 8; aged 21-79 months) and their parents, providing quantitative analysis on children's performance (running, throwing, jumping, kicking, balancing and catching), as well as qualitative analysis on parents' attitude and behaviour (two-weekly feedback surveys and interviews). Lab-based measures showed significant improvements in run time, underarm throwing distance, and horizontal jump distance. Test of Gross Motor Development-3 showed a significant gain in running, underarm and overarm throwing, horizontal jump and kicking. Further, developmental stages indicated significant improvements in running, kicking and catching. Parents reported increased enjoyment and knowledge, children's enjoyment, independence and confidence. This pilot study provides support for the research and development of the MM App and suggests more research into the use of APPs to support home activities among families with young children.

The distribution of Amblyomma americanum (L.) is changing and reports of tick-borne disease transmitted by A. americanum are increasing in the USA. We used flagging to collect ticks, surveyed vegetation and collected weather data in 2015 and 2016. A. americanum dominated collections in both years (97%). Ticks did not differ among burn treatments; however, tick abundance differed between years among total, adult, and larval ticks. Habitat variables showed a weak negative correlation to total ticks in respect to: Shannon diversity index, percent bare ground, perennial cover, and coarse woody debris. Nymphal ticks showed a weak negative correlation to percent bare ground and fewer adults were collected in areas with more leaf litter and coarse woody debris. Conversely, we found larvae more often in areas with more total cover, biennials, vines, shrubs, and leaf litter, suggesting habitat is important for this life stage. We compared weather variables to tick presence and found, in 2015, temperature, precipitation, humidity, and sample period influenced tick collection and were life stage specific. In 2016, temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind, and sample period influenced tick collection and were also life stage specific. These results indicate that spring burns in an oak woodland do not reduce ticks; other variables such as habitat and weather are more influential on tick abundance or presence at different life stages.

STUDY DESIGN: In vitro cadaveric biomechanical study. OBJECTIVE: To assess effects of 4-rod reconstruction, rod material, and anterior column support on motion and surface rod strain in a pedicle subtraction osteotomy model. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) can correct significant sagittal deformity of the lumbar spine; however, revision rates are high. To reduce rod strain and the incidence of rod fracture, clinical use of multi-rod construction, cobalt chrome (CoCr) alloy rods, and interbody spacers adjacent to PSO has been proposed. Investigating both motion and rod strain is necessary to determine the biomechanical efficacy of these techniques. METHODS: Five specimens (T12-S1) underwent PSO at L3 with pedicle screw stabilization at L1-S1. Pedicle subtraction was adjusted to achieve a final lordosis of 70°. Flexion-extension (FE), lateral bending, and axial rotation were applied. Linear strain gauges measured surface rod strain during FE on primary and accessory rods at PSO level. Testing evaluated (1) accessory rods (4-Rod) added at PSO level versus primary rods (2-Rod); (2) Ti versus CoCr rods; and (3) lateral interbody spacers (S) inserted adjacent to PSO. One-way and three-way analysis of variance was performed (P ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: All constructs significantly reduced FE and lateral bending motion relative to intact (P < 0.001). The main effect of accessory rods in reducing FE motion was significant (P = 0.021). Accessory and CoCr rods reduced relative surface strain on the primary rod, irrespective of construct (P < 0.001). CoCr 4-Rod + S provided the greatest reduction in strain (76% decrease; P = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Accessory and CoCr rods provided greatest reduction in motion and rod strain at PSO level. Interbody devices minimally affected motion-induced strain and might act primarily to maintain disc height. Clinicians must assess whether surface strain and motion reduction minimize the incidence of rod fracture. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: N/A.

Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) can provide major sagittal correction for adult spinal deformity, sometimes achieving correction greater than 30°. Surgeons have reported failure rates up to 30% within 2 years, increasing to 46% after 4 to 5 years (SDC Figure 1, http://links.lww.com/BRS/B87). Revision following failure is difficult on the patient. PSO has achieved positive outcomes, but when used to correct posture in older patients with spinal deformity and fixed sagittal imbalance, rod breakage often leads to multiple surgical revisions. These complications must be avoided.
