AIM AND SCOPE: Our standard management is to operate isolated sagittal synostosis around 4 months of age because of morphological and cognitive outcomes. However, some patients present late and the likelihood of spontaneous remodeling is low in isolated sagittal craniosynostosis operated on after 12 months of age with a limited technique. The preliminary result of a modified technique for forehead remodeling and subtotal calvarial remodeling in nonsyndromic scaphocephalic children with late presentation is presented. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients older than 1 with isolated sagittal synostosis assessed between 2011 and 2015, over 1 year of age at the time of surgery, with available pre and postoperative computed tomography-scans, were retrospectively included into the study. The following parameters were collected: (1) age at surgery, (2) duration of the procedure, (3) surgical technique, (4) fronto-nasal angle before and after surgery and (5) forehead width before and after surgery. RESULTS: Ten patients aged between 15 months and 6 years were retrospectively included. Delayed surgery was due to late presentation or initial parental reluctance. All patients presented with a transversal narrowing of the forehead and an anterior bulge. Mean age at surgery was 28 months and mean follow up was 23 months (1-4 years). Measurements showed significant improvement of both the fronto-nasal angle and the width of the forehead. CONCLUSIONS: Late-presenting scaphocephalic patients operated on after 12 months of age require forehead remodeling to achieve satisfactory aesthetic results. Modified forehead remodeling by splitting the forehead sagittally into 2 symmetrical halves and adding a midline bone strip is a safe and feasible way to widen the forehead. Long term follow-up is needed to assess this modified technique.

Antiviral defense of plants is usually enhanced by an elevated temperature under natural conditions. In order to better understand this phenomenon, we carried out temperature shift experiments with Nicotiana glutinosa plants that were infected with Potato virus X (PVX) or the necrotic strain of Potato virus Y (PVY(N)). The virus titer of the plants was found to be much lower when they were maintained at 30°C compared with 22°C, particularly in the upper leaves. PVX resistance at 30°C persisted for a short period even when temperature was shifted back to 22°C. In contrast, N. benthamiana lost the virus resistance immediately after the temperature dropped to 22°C. Expression analysis of two RNA-dependent RNA polymerases in N. glutinosa (NgRDR) showed that a 12-day treatment at 30°C increased the expression of NgRDR1, while NgRDR6 was not affected. In addition, the NgRDR6 mRNA level correlated with the PVX titer but was unaffected by PVY(N) infection. These observations indicate that PVX and PVY(N), although they are both RNA viruses, might trigger different defense responses at elevated temperatures. Our study provides valuable data for a better understanding of the temperature-regulated host virus interaction.

Inspired by a recent experiment of localization-delocalization transition (LDT) of indirect excitons in lateral electrostatic lattices (Remeika et al 2009 Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 186803), we theoretically investigate the interplay between periodic potential and nonlinear interactions of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells. It is shown that the model involving both attractive two-body and repulsive three-body interactions can lead to a natural account for the LDT of excitons across the lattice when reducing lattice amplitude or increasing particle density. In addition, the observations that the smooth component of the photoluminescent energy increases with increasing exciton density and that the exciton interaction energy is close to the lattice amplitude at the transition are also qualitatively explained. Our model provides an alternative way of understanding the underlying physics of the exciton dynamics in lattice potential wells.

RESUMO

Two rearranged 2(3-->20)abeotaxanes were isolated from the leaves and stems of Taxus yunnanensis, and designated as taxin B and 2-deacetyltaxin B. The structure of taxin B with a unique 6/10/6 skeleton was deduced on the basis of 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 1H-1H COSY, DEPT, NOE, and mass spectra and confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The structure of 2-deacetyltaxin B is elucidated by analog.
