RESUMO

As a representative in the post-lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) landscape, lithium metal batteries (LMBs) exhibit high-energy densities but suffer from low coulombic efficiencies and short cycling lifetimes due to dendrite formation and complex side reactions. Separator modification holds the most promise in overcoming these challenges because it utilizes the original elements of LMBs. In this review, separators designed to address critical issues in LMBs that are fatal to their destiny according to the target electrodes are focused on. On the lithium anode side, functional separators reduce dendrite propagation with a conductive lithiophilic layer and a uniform Li-ion channel or form a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer through the continuous release of active agents. The classification of functional separators solving the degradation stemming from the cathodes, which has often been overlooked, is summarized. Structural deterioration and the resulting leakage from cathode materials are suppressed by acidic impurity scavenging, transition metal ion capture, and polysulfide shuttle effect inhibition from functional separators. Furthermore, flame-retardant separators for preventing LMB safety issues and multifunctional separators are discussed. Further expansion of functional separators can be effectively utilized in other types of batteries, indicating that intensive and extensive research on functional separators is expected to continue in LIBs.

Next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) that satisfy the requirements for an electric vehicle energy source should demonstrate high reliability and safety for long-term high-energy-density operation. This inevitably calls for a novel approach to advance major components such as the separator. Herein, a separator is designed and fabricated via application of multilayer functional coating on both sides of a polyethylene separator. The multilayer-coated separator (MCS) has a porous structure that does not interfere with lithium ion diffusion and exhibits superior heat resistance, high electrolyte uptake, and persistent adhesion with the electrode. More importantly, it enables high capacity retention and reduced impedance build up during cycling when used in a coin or pouch cell. These imply its promising application in energy sources requiring long-term stability. Fabrication of the MCS without the use of organic solvents is not only environmentally beneficial but also effective at cost reduction. This approach paves the way for the separator, which has long been considered an inactive major component of LIBs, to become an active contributor to the energy density toward achieving longer cycle stability.

BACKGROUND: Chitinase 3-like 1 protein (CHI3L1) (YKL-40 in humans and breast regression protein [BRP]-39 in mice) is required for optimal allergen sensitization and Th2 inflammation in various chronic inflammatory diseases including asthma. However, the role of CHI3L1 in airway inflammation induced by respiratory viruses has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between CHI3L1 and airway inflammation caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. METHODS: We measured YKL-40 levels in human nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) from hospitalized children presenting with acute respiratory symptoms. Wild-type (WT) and BRP-39 knockout (KO) C57BL/6 mice were inoculated with live RSV (A2 strain). Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung tissue samples were obtained on day 7 after inoculation to assess lung inflammation, airway reactivity, and expression of cytokines and BRP-39. RESULTS: In human subjects, YKL-40 and IL-13 levels in NPA were higher in children with RSV infection than in control subjects. Expression of BRP-39 and Th2 cytokines, IL-13 in particular, was increased following RSV infection in mice. Airway inflammation caused by RSV infection was reduced in BRP-39 KO mice as compared to WT mice. Th2 cytokine levels were not increased in the lungs of RSV-infected BRP-39 KO mice. BRP-39 regulated M2 macrophage activation in RSV-infected mice. Additionally, treatment with anti-CHI3L1 antibody attenuated airway inflammation and Th2 cytokine production in RSV-infected WT mice. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that CHI3L1 could contribute to airway inflammation induced by RSV infection. CHI3L1 could be a potential therapeutic candidate for attenuating Th2-associated immunopathology during RSV infection.

RESUMO

We explore a new mechanism for switching magnetism and superconductivity in a magnetically frustrated iron-based superconductor using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM). Our SPSTM study on single-crystal Sr_{2}VO_{3}FeAs shows that a spin-polarized tunneling current can switch the Fe-layer magnetism into a nontrivial C_{4} (2×2) order, which cannot be achieved by thermal excitation with an unpolarized current. Our tunneling spectroscopy study shows that the induced C_{4} (2×2) order has characteristics of plaquette antiferromagnetic order in the Fe layer and strongly suppresses superconductivity. Also, thermal agitation beyond the bulk Fe spin ordering temperature erases the C_{4} state. These results suggest a new possibility of switching local superconductivity by changing the symmetry of magnetic order with spin-polarized and unpolarized tunneling currents in iron-based superconductors.

Electrons in a single sheet of graphene behave quite differently from those in traditional two-dimensional electron systems. Like massless relativistic particles, they have linear dispersion and chiral eigenstates. Furthermore, two sets of electrons centred at different points in reciprocal space ('valleys') have this dispersion, giving rise to valley degeneracy. The symmetry between valleys, together with spin symmetry, leads to a fourfold quartet degeneracy of the Landau levels, observed as peaks in the density of states produced by an applied magnetic field. Recent electron transport measurements have observed the lifting of the fourfold degeneracy in very large applied magnetic fields, separating the quartet into integer and, more recently, fractional levels. The exact nature of the broken-symmetry states that form within the Landau levels and lift these degeneracies is unclear at present and is a topic of intense theoretical debate. Here we study the detailed features of the four quantum states that make up a degenerate graphene Landau level. We use high-resolution scanning tunnelling spectroscopy at temperatures as low as 10 mK in an applied magnetic field to study the top layer of multilayer epitaxial graphene. When the Fermi level lies inside the fourfold Landau manifold, significant electron correlation effects result in an enhanced valley splitting for even filling factors, and an enhanced electron spin splitting for odd filling factors. Most unexpectedly, we observe states with Landau level filling factors of 7/2, 9/2 and 11/2, suggestive of new many-body states in graphene.

Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) has attracted a great deal of attention because of its association with increased asthma severity. To identify plasma biomarkers for the prediction of AERD, the six most abundant plasma proteins (albumin, IgG, antitrypsin, IgA, transferrin, and haptoglobin) in pooled plasma samples were removed using a multiple affinity removal system column. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) was used for differential display proteomic analysis of the pooled plasma. Proteins were identified by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF)/TOF. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to identify and quantify apolipoprotein H (Apo H) in plasma from subjects with AERD and aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA). Eight protein spots showed differences in relative intensity between pooled plasma from subjects with AERD (n = 8) and those with ATA (n = 8). MALDI-TOF/TOF analysis showed decreases in the levels of alpha-fibrinogen precursor, Apo H, fibrin beta, and proapolipoprotein in AERD as compared with ATA, and increases in chain A human complement component C3, 90-kDa heat shock protein, complement component C4a, and kininogen-1 isoform 2. Apo H concentrations were significantly increased in plasma from subjects with ATA than those with AERD and normal controls, as measured by ELISA (P < 0.01). AERD is characterized by changes in the levels of proteins involved in the coagulation and complement pathways. In addition, Apo H is up-regulated in ATA compared to AERD and normal controls, suggesting that Apo H may be involved in different pathogenesis of ATA from AERD.

BACKGROUND: Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) is an essential mediator of angiogenesis that establishes vascular integrity, and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) acts as its natural inhibitor. We considered that angiopoietin might be important in bronchial asthma. METHODS: In total, 35 patients with asthma and 20 healthy subjects were studied. RESULTS: The serum Ang-1 levels were significantly elevated in patients with asthma compared to control subjects (293.9 ± 13.8 pg/mL vs. 248.3 ± 16.2 pg/mL, respectively, p = 0.04). The serum Ang-2 levels were not different between the two groups. The areas under the curve (AUC) for serum angiopoietins revealed that the serum level of Ang-1 (0.68) was more sensitive and specific than the serum Ang-2 level (0.55) for differentiating between patients with asthma and control subjects. The serum Ang-1/Ang-2 ratio was correlated with the FEV1/FVC ratio (r = -0.312, p = 0.02), while serum Ang-2 was correlated with body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the serum Ang-1 levels were higher in asthma patients compared with healthy subjects. As the Ang-1/Ang-2 ratio was related to lung function, the data suggest that serum angiopoietin is associated with lung function in patients with asthma.

We investigate the roles of the pseudospin and the valley degeneracy in electron scattering at graphene edges. It is found that they are strongly correlated with charge density modulations of short-wavelength oscillations and slowly decaying beat patterns in the electronic density profile. Theoretical analyses using nearest-neighbor tight-binding methods and first-principles density-functional theory calculations agree well with our experimental data from scanning tunneling microscopy. The armchair edge shows almost perfect intervalley scattering with pseudospin invariance regardless of the presence of the hydrogen atom at the edge, whereas the zigzag edge only allows for intravalley scattering with the change in the pseudospin orientation. The effect of structural defects at the graphene edges is also discussed.

Air pollutants and obesity are important factors that contribute to asthma. The aim of this study was to assess the airway responsiveness and inflammation in Otsuka-Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) obese rats and Long Evans Tokushima-Otsuka (LETO) nonobese rats exposed to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs). Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima fatty rats and LETO rats were exposed intranasally to DEP and then challenged with aerosolized DEP on days 6 to 8. Body plethysmography, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and histology were performed. Enhanced pause (Penh) was measured as an indicator of airway resistance on day 9 and samples were collected on day 10. After exposure to DEP, the OLETF group exhibited a greater increase in Penh compared to that in the LETO group. Moreover, the BAL fluid in mice showed an increase in the total and differential cell counts in the DEP-exposed OLETF group compared to that in the DEP-exposed LETO group. Histological assessment of lung tissue from each group revealed that the DEP-exposed OLETF group tended to have increased inflammatory cell infiltrations in the prebronchial area. Increased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, coactivator 1ß messenger RNA was observed in the lungs of obese rats compared to that in nonobese rats following DEP exposure. These data indicate that the DEP-exposed OLETF group had increased airway responses and inflammation compared to the DEP-exposed LETO group, indicating that diesel particulates and obesity may be co-contributors to asthma.

We measured the response of the surface state spectrum of epitaxial Sb(2)Te(3) thin films to applied gate electric fields by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The gate dependent shift of the Fermi level and the screening effect from bulk carriers vary as a function of film thickness. We observed a gap opening at the Dirac point for films thinner than four quintuple layers, due to the coupling of the top and bottom surfaces. Moreover, the top surface state band gap of the three quintuple layer films was found to be tunable by a back gate, indicating the possibility of observing a topological phase transition in this system. Our results are well explained by an effective model of 3D topological insulator thin films with structure inversion asymmetry, indicating that three quintuple layer Sb(2)Te(3) films are topologically nontrivial and belong to the quantum spin Hall insulator class.

RESUMO

Topological superconductors represent a newly predicted phase of matter that is topologically distinct from conventional superconducting condensates of Cooper pairs. As a manifestation of their topological character, topological superconductors support solid-state realizations of Majorana fermions at their boundaries. The recently discovered superconductor Cu(x)Bi(2)Se(3) has been theoretically proposed as an odd-parity superconductor in the time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor class, and point-contact spectroscopy measurements have reported the observation of zero-bias conductance peaks corresponding to Majorana states in this material. Here we report scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of the superconducting energy gap in Cu(x)Bi(2)Se(3) as a function of spatial position and applied magnetic field. The tunneling spectrum shows that the density of states at the Fermi level is fully gapped without any in-gap states. The spectrum is well described by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory with a momentum independent order parameter, which suggests that Cu(x)Bi(2)Se(3) is a classical s-wave superconductor contrary to previous expectations and measurements.

Fabrication of physically engineered colloids and their application to the biological fields is emerging importance because of their potential to provide an enhanced performance without altering the chemical properties of biomaterials used. A facile approach is reported to fabricate sub-10-µm-sized PLGA microparticle with small dimples covering the surface by droplet imprinting. Optical and magnetic resonance bioimaging agents are easily co-encapsulated inside the microparticles to obtain a bi-modal imaging agent. Cell internalization efficacy of dimpled particles in DC 2.4 cell is enhanced compared with conventional smooth round-shaped colloids. Our result indicates that morphology-controlled microparticles show promise as a cell labeling with improved cell interaction.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) has good properties as a conductive polymer such as high conductivity, optical transmittance, and chemical stability, while offering relatively weak physicochemical properties. The main purpose of this paper is to improve physicochemical properties such as solvent resistance and pencil hardness of PEDOT. Carboxyl groups in the poly(MMA-co-MAA) polymer chains can effectively crosslink each other in the presence of aziridine, resulting in physicochemically robust PEDOT/poly(MMA-co-MAA) hybrid conductive films. The electrical conductivity, optical properties, and physicochemical properties of the hybrid conductive film were compared by varying the solid content and poly(MMA-co-MAA) portion in the coating precursor solution. From the results, the transparency and surface resistance of the hybrid film show a tendency to decrease with increasing solid content in the coating precursor. Moreover, solvent resistance and hardness were dramatically enhanced by hybridization of PEDOT and crosslinked poly(MMA-co-MAA) due to curing reactions between carboxyl groups. The chemical composition of 30 wt-% of poly(MMA-co-MAA) (MMA:MAA mole ratio 9:1) and 3 wt-% - 5 wt-% of aziridine yields the best physicochemical properties of poly(MMA-co-MAA)/PEDOT hybrid thin films.

RESUMO

The relation between macroscopic charge transport properties and microscopic carrier distribution is one of the central issues in the physics and future applications of graphene devices (GDs). We find strong conductance enhancement at the edges of GDs using scanning gate microscopy. This result is explained by our theoretical model of the opening of an additional conduction channel localized at the edges by depleting accumulated charge by the tip.

We herein report on the large-scale synthesis of ultrathin Bi(2)Te(3) nanoplates and subsequent spark plasma sintering to fabricate n-type nanostructured bulk thermoelectric materials. Bi(2)Te(3) nanoplates were synthesized by the reaction between bismuth thiolate and tri-n-octylphosphine telluride in oleylamine. The thickness of the nanoplates was ~1 nm, which corresponds to a single layer in Bi(2)Te(3) crystals. Bi(2)Te(3) nanostructured bulk materials were prepared by sintering of surfactant-removed Bi(2)Te(3) nanoplates using spark plasma sintering. We found that the grain size and density were strongly dependent on the sintering temperature, and we investigated the effect of the sintering temperature on the thermoelectric properties of the Bi(2)Te(3) nanostructured bulk materials. The electrical conductivities increased with an increase in the sintering temperature, owing to the decreased interface density arising from the grain growth and densification. The Seebeck coefficients roughly decreased with an increase in the sintering temperature. Interestingly, the electron concentrations and mobilities strongly depended on the sintering temperature, suggesting the potential barrier scattering at interfaces and the doping effect of defects and organic residues. The thermal conductivities also increased with an increase in the sintering temperature because of grain growth and densification. The maximum thermoelectric figure-of-merit, ZT, is 0.62 at 400 K, which is one of the highest among the reported values of n-type nanostructured materials based on chemically synthesized nanoparticles. This increase in ZT shows the possibility of the preparation of highly efficient thermoelectric materials by chemical synthesis.

RESUMO

This study demonstrates a novel approach to creating a thin-film electronic device that offers selective or complete disposability only in on-demand conditions while maintaining stable operation reliability during everyday use. The approach involves a transient paper substrate, combined with phase change encapsulation and highly bendable planarization materials, achieved through a simple solution process. The substrate used in this study offers a smooth surface morphology that enables the creation of stable multilayers for thin-film electronic devices. It also exhibits superior waterproof properties, which allows the proof-of-concept organic light-emitting device to function even when submerged in water. Additionally, the substrate provides controlled surface roughness under repeated bending, demonstrating reliable folding stability for 1000 cycles at 10 mm of curvature. Furthermore, a specific component of the electronic device can be selectively made to malfunction through predetermined voltage input, and the entire device can be fully disposed of via Joule-heating-induced combustion.

PURPOSE: To use objective and subjective voice function analysis to compare outcomes in patients who had undergone conventional open thyroidectomy or robotic thyroidectomy. METHODS: The study involved 88 consecutive patients who underwent thyroid surgery between May 2009 and December 2009; 46 patients underwent a conventional open thyroidectomy, and 42 underwent a robotic thyroidectomy. Auditory perceptual evaluation was used to make subjective assessments of voice function, and videolaryngostroboscopy, acoustic voice analysis with aerodynamic study, electroglottography, and voice range profile were used to make objective assessments. Each assessment was made before surgery, and at 1 week and 3 months after surgery. RESULTS: The conventional open and robotic thyroidectomy groups were similar in terms of age, gender ratio, and disease profile. We found that 18 (20.5%) of the 88 patients showed some level of voice dysfunction at 1 week after surgery; that the dysfunction resolved by 3 months after surgery in all cases; and that it was not permanent according to postoperative videolaryngostroboscopy. The conventional open and robotic thyroidectomy groups were found to have similar levels of dysfunction at 1 week after surgery, except for jitter, which was greater in the robotic group. For both groups, any such dysfunction spontaneously resolved by 3 months after surgery, and there were no significant differences between the groups in terms of any voice function parameter. CONCLUSIONS: Voice dysfunction was present after both open and robotic thyroidectomy (without any evident laryngeal nerve injury). However, function subsequently normalized to preoperative levels at 3 months after surgery in both groups. Voice function outcomes after robotic thyroidectomy are similar to those after conventional open thyroidectomy.

Herein we describe a photo-alignment layer of improved azimuthal anchoring energy comparable to conventional rubbing method. In order to address the inherent low anchoring stability of photo-alignment layer, we applied embossing technique to conventional photosensitive polymer film, based on the cinnamoyl photoreactive groups, to introduce physical micro-groove effect for additional anchoring energy. From this, 2.5 × 10⁻4 J/m² of azimuthal anchoring energy was achieved, which is considered as synergistic effect from both photoinduced chemical interaction and physical microgroove alignment. In this study, we conducted systematic study on change in anchoring energy as a function of both aspect ratio of embossed pattern and UV exposure dose. We also demonstrated fabrication of sophisticated multi-domain structure of LC cells and discussed theoretical interpretation through LC simulation.

OBJECTIVES: Approximately 5% of non-medullary thyroid cancer (NMTC) diagnoses are made against a background of familial predisposition and, in such instances, the disease is termed familial non-medullary thyroid cancer (FNMTC). To date, neither genetic alterations causing FNMTC nor genes predisposing to the condition have been described. The objective of the present study was to evaluate loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at the four known susceptibility loci (fPTC/PRN, NMTC1, MNG1, and TCO1) and to compare the mutation rates of RAS/RAF genes in patients with FNMTC and sporadic NMTC. METHODS: Fourteen FNMTCs in patients from seven families were analyzed in terms of involvement of the four susceptibility loci, and 63 thyroid cancer tumors [FNMTC (29) and NMTC (34)] were evaluated for the occurrence of mutations in BRAF, and H-, N-, and K-RAS, using polymerase chain reaction, single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis, and direct sequencing. RESULTS: Only five (35.7%) tumors showed loss of LOH at the three susceptibility loci (NMTC1, MNG1, or TCO1). These allelic losses did not show a specific pattern. Four (13.8%) FNMTCs and one (2.9%) NMTC had H-RAS (codon 12) mutations. Further, mutation of BRAF V600E was observed in 12 (41.4%) FNMTCs and 29 (85.3%) NMTCs. CONCLUSION: Four known susceptibility loci are infrequently involved in FNMTC. Although further studies are needed, the present findings additionally suggest that somatic activation of oncogenes via BRAF and RAS mutation plays a role in FNMTC tumorigenesis.

Although the prognosis of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is generally encouraging, a diagnostic dilemma is posed when an increasing level of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) is noted, without detection of a recurrent tumor using conventional imaging tools such as the iodine-131 whole-body scanning (the [(131)I] scan) or neck ultrasonography (US). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of [(124)I]-PET/CT and [(18)F]-FDG-PET/CT in terms of accurate detection of both iodine- and non-iodine-avid recurrence, compared with that of conventional imaging such as the [(131)I] scan or neck ultrasonography (US). Between July 2009 and June 2010, we prospectively studied 19 DTC patients with elevated thyroglobulin levels but who do not show pathological lesions when conventional imaging modalities are used. All involved patients had undergone total thyroidectomy and radioiodine (RI) treatment, and who had been followed-up for a mean of 13 months (range, 6-21 months) after the last RI session. Combined [(18)F]-FDG-PET/CT and [(124)I]-PET/CT data were evaluated for detecting recurrent DTC lesions in study patients and compared with those of other radiological and/or cytological investigations. Nine of 19 patients (47.4%) showed pathological [(18)F]-FDG (5/19, 26.3%) or [(124)I]-PET (4/19, 21.1%) uptake, and were classed as true-positives. Among such patients, disease management was modified in six (66.7%) and disease was restaged in seven (77.8%). In particular, the use of the described imaging combination optimized planning of surgical resection to deal with locoregional recurrence in 21.1% (4/19) of patients, who were shown to be disease-free during follow-up after surgery. Our results indicate that combination of [(18)F]-FDG-PET/CT and [(124)I]-PET/CT affords a valuable diagnostic method that can be used to make therapeutic decisions in patients with DTC who are tumor-free on conventional imaging studies but who have high Tg levels.
