[Comparative research on serum N-acetylneuraminic acid determinations in tumor diagnosis]. / Vergleichende Untersuchungen über Serum-N-Acetylneuraminsäure-Bestimmungen in der Tumordiagnostik.

N-acetylneuraminic acid (NAN) is determined in supernatants of perchloric acid as well as in chloroform/methanol extracts (lipid bound sialic acid) from sera of tumour patients. Compared to patients with other diseases, we do not find fundamental differences. In patients suffering from kidney tumours, bronchial and gastric carcinomas, the NAN values of both extracts are distinctly outside the range of the reference values. In most cases, acid alpha 1 glycoprotein is found to be the cause of the NAN concentration.

[Problems of immunoglobulin analysis in IgD-plasmacytoma]. / Zur Problematik der Immunglobulinanalyse beim IgD-Plasmozytom.

We succeeded in proving the specific monoclonal immune globulin in a case of IgD-plasmocytoma only relatively late after generalisation of the disease. The immunoelectrophoretic findings changed under the antineoplastic system therapy in such a way that the specific line of immune globulins was demonstrated much weakened and a new strong precipitation line for free easy chains of type L appeared. When the findings were not carefully inspected without doubt an easy chain plasmocytoma might have been diagnosed. The findings can earliest be explained by a further increase of the spontaneous readiness for decay which already exists in the immune globulin D under the cytostatic therapy.

[Detection of N-acetylneuraminic acid with long-time application of hormonal contraceptives (author's transl)]. / Zum Naehweis von N-Azetylneuraminsäure bei Langzeitapplikation hormonaler Kontrazeptiva.

The total level of N-acetylneuraminic acid in serum was found to be affected by long-time application of hormonal contraceptives. That effect appeared to depend on oestrogen. The problem of reversibility is discussed.

PIP: Serum samples were taken from 60 women who had used the oral contraceptives Gravistat, Non-Ovlon, Ovosiston, or the depot preparation Deposiston for over 2 years. Each of the 4 preparations had been used by 15 women, respectively. The total level of N-acetylneuraminic acid was measured in these samples, taken at the end of the 24th cycle of use and the first cycle after discontinuation. A statistically significant (t-test) reduction of the N-acetylneuraminic acid level was observed for the 3 preparations Gravistat, Non-Ovlon, and Ovosiston in the 4 weeks after discontinuation of these preparations. This occurred even though the N-acetylneuraminic acid levels had reached the maximum limits or more during oral contraceptive use. No significant change was observed among patients who had used Deposiston.

By the aid of fractional estimation of N-acetylneuraminic acid (NAN) from gastric juice it is possible to investigate quantitative changes of NAN-proteins on the gastric juice. Patients with active chronic atrophic gastritis of the type B have an increase of orosomucoid, which is precipitated by phosphorwolfram acid, in the gastric juice.
