RESUMO
This study investigates the effect of silicon carbon nitride (SiCN) as an interlayer for ZnO-based resistive random access memory (RRAM). SiCN was deposited using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) with controlled carbon content, achieved by varying the partial pressure of tetramethylsilane (4MS). Our results indicate that increasing the carbon concentration enhances the endurance of RRAM devices but reduces the on/off ratio. Devices with SiCN exhibited lower operating voltages and more uniform resistive switching behavior. Oxygen migration from ZnO to SiCN is examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, promoting the formation of conductive filaments (CFs) and lowering set voltages. Additionally, we examined the impact of top electrode oxidation on RRAM performance. The oxidation of the Ti top electrode was found to reduce endurance and increase low resistive state (LRS) resistance, potentially leading to device failure through the formation of an insulating layer between the electrode and resistive switching material. The oxygen storage capability of SiCN was further confirmed through high-temperature stress tests, demonstrating its potential as an oxygen reservoir. Devices with a 20 nm SiCN interlayer showed significantly improved endurance, with over 500 switching cycles, compared to 62 cycles in those with a 5 nm SiCN layer. However, the thicker SiCN layer resulted in a notably lower on/off ratio due to reduced capacitance. These findings suggest that SiCN interlayers can effectively enhance the performance and endurance of ZnO-based RRAM devices by acting as an oxygen reservoir and mitigating the top electrode oxidation effect.
RESUMO
In this study, resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) devices with ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) are suggested to enhance performance and reduce variation in device switching parameters. The ZnO NPs are formed by annealing ZnO prepared via atomic layer deposition on HfO2, which is verified using transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction pattern, and atomic force microscopy. The depth profile analysis of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that oxygen diffuses from HfO2to ZnO NPs during annealing. This can be explained by the calculation results using density functional theory (DFT) where the formation energy of oxygen vacancies is reduced at the interface of ZnO NPs and HfO2compared to single HfO2. The fabricated ZnO NPs ReRAM demonstrates reduced forming voltage, stable resistive switching behavior, and improved cycle-to-cycle uniformity in a high-resistance state.

AIM: The link between periodontitis and intestinal dysbiosis, two factors that contribute to atherosclerosis, has not been clearly defined. We investigated the integrative effects of oral infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis (PG), the major pathogen for periodontitis, on intestinal microbiota and atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ApoE-/- mice were fed a normal chow diet (NC), a Western diet (WD) or a WD with oral PG infection (PG). The PG infection was investigated by placing a total of 109 CFUs of live PG into the oral cavity of each mouse using a feeding needle five times a week for 3 weeks. Atherosclerotic lesions of the aortae were measured, and blood lipoproteins and the expression of molecules related to lipid metabolism in the liver were analysed. We also performed 16S RNA sequencing and a microbiome analysis using faeces. RESULTS: En face bloc preparation of the aortae showed that the PG group had a 1.7-fold increase in atherosclerotic lesions compared with the WD group (p < .01). Serum analyses showed that oral PG infection induced a significant decrease in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride. Western blots of hepatic tissue lysates revealed that PG infection reduced the expression of scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-B1) in the liver by 50%. Faecal microbiota analysis revealed that species richness estimates (Chao1, ACE) decreased immediately after PG infection. PG infection also induced a significant decrease in Shannon diversity and an increase in Simpson's indices in the WD-fed mice. PG infection significantly increased the phyla Actinobacteria and Deferribacteres, along with the species Mucispirillum schaedleri and Lactobacillus gasseri, in the mice. The functional study showed that PG infection increased the expression of proteins that function in carbohydrate and glucose metabolism, including phosphotransferase system (PTS) proteins and the GntR family transcriptional regulator. CONCLUSIONS: Oral PG infection promotes atherosclerosis and induces significant metabolic changes, including reduced serum HDL and reduced hepatic SR-B1 and ABCA1 expression, as well as changes in intestinal microbiota. Our study suggests that intestinal dysbiosis accompanies periodontitis and could play a role in atherosclerosis.

Galbonolide (GAL) A and B are antifungal macrolactone polyketides produced by Streptomyces galbus. During their polyketide chain assembly, GAL-A and -B incorporate methoxymalonate and methylmalonate, respectively, in the fourth chain extension step. The methoxymalonyl-acyl carrier protein biosynthesis locus (galG to K) is specifically involved in GAL-A biosynthesis, and this locus is neighbored by a gene cluster composed of galA-E. GalA-C constitute a single module, highly reducing type I polyketide synthase (PKS). GalD and GalE are cytochrome P450 and Rieske domain protein, respectively. Gene knock-out experiments verified that galB, -C, and -D are essential for GAL biosynthesis. A galD mutant accumulated a GAL-C that lacked two hydroxyl groups and a double bond when compared with GAL-B. A [U-(13)C]propionate feeding experiment indicated that no rare precursor other than methoxymalonate was incorporated during GAL biogenesis. A search of the S. galbus genome for a modular type I PKS system, the type that was expected to direct GAL biosynthesis, resulted in the identification of only one modular type I PKS gene cluster. Homology analysis indicated that this PKS gene cluster is the locus for vicenistatin biosynthesis. This cluster was previously reported in Streptomyces halstedii. A gene deletion of the vinP2 ortholog clearly demonstrated that this modular type I PKS system is not involved in GAL biosynthesis. Therefore, we propose that GalA-C direct macrolactone polyketide formation for GAL. Our studies provide a glimpse into a novel biochemical strategy used for polyketide synthesis; that is, the iterative assembly of propionates with highly programmed ß-keto group modifications.

BACKGRUOUND: Previous studies have reported that oxidative stress contributes to obesity characterized by adipocyte hypertrophy. However, mechanism has not been studied extensively. In the current study, we evaluated role of extracellular vimentin secreted by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) in energy metabolism in adipocytes. METHODS: We treated 3T3-L1-derived adipocytes with oxLDL and measured vimentin which was secreted in the media. We evaluated changes in uptake of glucose and free fatty acid, expression of molecules functioning in energy metabolism, synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and lactate, markers for endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and autophagy in adipocytes treated with recombinant vimentin. RESULTS: Adipocytes secreted vimentin in response to oxLDL. Microscopic evaluation revealed that vimentin treatment induced increase in adipocyte size and increase in sizes of intracellular lipid droplets with increased intracellular triglyceride. Adipocytes treated with vimentin showed increased uptake of glucose and free fatty acid with increased expression of plasma membrane glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT1), GLUT4, and CD36. Vimentin treatment increased transcription of GLUT1 and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (Hif-1α) but decreased GLUT4 transcription. Adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1), diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) and 2 were decreased by vimentin treatment. Markers for ER stress were increased and autophagy was impaired in vimentin-treated adipocytes. No change was observed in synthesis of ATP and lactate in the adipocytes treated with vimentin. CONCLUSION: We concluded that extracellular vimentin regulates expression of molecules in energy metabolism and promotes adipocyte hypertrophy. Our results show that vimentin functions in the interplay between oxidative stress and metabolism, suggesting a mechanism by which adipocyte hypertrophy is induced in oxidative stress.

Social media discourse has become a key data source for understanding the public's perception of, and sentiments during a public health crisis. However, given the different niches which platforms occupy in terms of information exchange, reliance on a single platform would provide an incomplete picture of public opinions. Based on the schema theory, this study suggests a 'social media platform schema' to indicate users' different expectations based on previous usages of platform and argues that a platform's distinct characteristics foster distinct platform schema and, in turn, distinct nature of information. We analyzed COVID-19 vaccine side effect-related discussions from Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube, each of which represents a different type of the platform, and found thematic and emotional differences across platforms. Thematic analysis using k-means clustering algorithm identified seven clusters in each platform. To computationally group and contrast thematic clusters across platforms, we employed modularity analysis using the Louvain algorithm to determine a semantic network structure based on themes. We also observed differences in emotional contexts across platforms. Theoretical and public health implications are then discussed.
RESUMO
This study uses a new approach to understand people's varied responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Heightened media coverage and surging death tolls undoubtedly increase individuals' death-related thoughts. Thus, this study draws on terror management theory to analyze the general public's reactions during which mortality is salient. Twitter data were collected from three countries-the US, the UK, and India. Topic modeling analysis using Latent Dirichlet Allocation identified a total of seven themes reflecting two types of defenses: proximal defenses and distal defenses. Proximal defenses included calls for behavioral changes in response to COVID-19. Distal defenses included searching for meaning, political polarization and government incompetence, racial division, and sharing up-to-date information. During a prolonged crisis, anxiety-buffering systems can be undermined and lead to either maladaptive defenses (i.e., psychological distress) or new forms of defenses (i.e., adjusting to the new normal). The analysis highlights cultural differences in defenses across the three countries. Theoretical and practical implications for public health practitioners and social media platform managers are then discussed.

The ivory barnacle Amphibalanus eburneus is a marine crustacean, which presents near-cosmopolitan distribution due to extensive introduction and exhibits a wide spectrum of phenotypic variation. To elucidate geographical differentiation among populations through invasion, we investigated variation in genetic structure, shell morphology, and recruitment pattern for A. eburneus, from the southern Korean Peninsula where it has been established since the late 1980s. We selected samples from four populations in corresponding ecologically-relevant regions representing all surrounding South Korean waters. From these we amplified the mitochondrial genetic marker cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) from 57 individuals and performed a populational genetic analyses with 11 additional GenBank sequences to evaluate population structure. To examine morphological variation, we applied two-dimensional landmark-based geometric morphometrics to the scutum and tergum for 148 and 151 individuals, respectively. Furthermore, we estimated the density of year-old individuals in the field to compare recruitment responses among localities. We detected 33 haplotypes among the four locations belonging to three distinct clades based on moderate intraspecific pairwise genetic distance (≥3.5%). The haplotypes in these clades were not locality-specific in their distribution. In contrast, we did detect interpopulation variation in opercular shape and morphospace structure, and one population could be separated from the rest based on its distinct tergum morphotype alone. This morphologically distinct population was also differentiated by displaying the lowest mean recruitment density. Our results indicate that although there is no relationship between molecular variation in the COI gene and geographic regions in South Korea, association with locality for operculum morphology, and recruitment response suggest ecological adaptation by this barnacle in a new habitat.

dTDP-L-rhamnose (dTDP-Rha)-synthesizing dTDP-6-deoxy-L-lyxo-4-hexulose reductase (4-KR) and dTDP-Rha 4-epimerase were characterized from Burkholderia thailandensis E264 by utilizing rmlD(Bth) (BTH_I1472) and wbiB(Bth) (BTH_I1476), respectively. Incubation of the recombinant WbiB(Bth) with RmlA/RmlB/RmlC/Tal, which has previously been shown to generate dTDP-6-deoxy-L-talose (dTDP-6dTal) from α-D-glucose-1-phosphate, dTTP, and NADPH, produced dTDP-Rha. (1)H NMR measurements confirmed that both RmlA/RmlB/RmlC/Tal/WbiB(Bth) and RmlA/RmlB/RmlC/RmlD produced dTDP-Rha. WbiB(Bth) alone produced dTDP-Rha when incubated with dTDP-6dTal. This is the first report to demonstrate epimerase activity interconverting between dTDP-Rha and dTDP-6dTal.

The filipin biosynthetic gene cluster of Streptomyces avermitilis contains pteB, a homolog of crotonyl-CoA carboxylase/reductase. PteB was predicted to be 2-octenoyl-CoA carboxylase/reductase, supplying hexylmalonyl-CoA to filipin biosynthesis. Recombinant PteB displayed selective reductase activity toward 2-octenoyl-CoA while generating a broad range of alkylmalonyl-CoAs in the presence of bicarbonate.

A new species, Gammarus baengnyeongensis sp. nov., belonging to the family Gammaridae Leach, 1814 was collected from the Baengnyeongdo and Daecheongdo islands in South Korea. This new species is characterized by the flagellum of antenna 2 with calceoli, and the length ratio of outer ramus to inner ramus of uropod 3. Descriptions of diagnostic characteristics of the species are provided in the text. We performed statistical analysis to confirm the significance of morphological differences of interspecies. Additionally, we compare the new species to related species by the partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene. Genetic distances between the new species and closely related species rated from 29.1-40.8%, which highly supports Gammarus baengnyeongensis sp. nov. as a valid species. In this study, we add one new Gammarus species in Korean waters.

This study investigated mercury contamination with respect to the sediment characteristics in Gumu Creek near the Pohang Industrial Complex, South Korea. The contaminated sediment had high levels of Hg, exceeding 250â¯mg Hg/kg sediment at the sampling position, and high concentrations of iron, sulfur, and organic carbon under extreme anaerobic conditions. The anoxic condition of the sediment produced large amounts of FeS. Hg L3-edge EXAFS analysis revealed that FeS controlled the Hg species in the sediment mainly as ß-HgS like precipitation or Hg-S complexation. We also speculated that the presence of FeS induced the abiotic reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(0) and consequently suppressed the formation of highly toxic methylated mercury species. The results obtained in this study are mostly consistent with those reported in previous studies of geochemical reactions of FeS in controlling Hg(II) under pure FeS mineral systems under laboratory scenarios. This study demonstrates that the laboratory controlled reaction scenarios can explain the field behavior of Hg in the contaminated anoxic sediment of the Gumu Creek site.
RESUMO
Galbonolides A and B are antifungal compounds, which are produced by Streptomyces galbus. A multimodular polyketide synthase (PKS) was predicted to catalyze their biosynthesis, and a methoxymalonyl-acyl carrier protein (methoxymalonyl-ACP) was expected to be involved in the biosynthesis of galbonolide A. Cloning of a methoxymalonyl-ACP biosynthesis locus (galGHIJK) and the flanking regions has revealed that the locus is colocalized with beta-ketoacyl synthase (KAS)-related genes (orf3, 4, and 5), but separated from any multimodular PKS gene cluster in S. galbus. A galI-disruption mutant (SK-galI-5) is unable to produce galbonolide A, but can synthesize galbonolide B, indicating that galGHIJK is involved in the biosynthesis of galbonolide A. A disruption mutant of orf4 is severely impaired in the production of both galbonolides A and B. These results indicate that galGHIJK and the KAS genes are involved in the biosynthesis of galbonolides, although they are not colocalized with a multimodular PKS gene cluster. We further propose that a single galbonolide PKS generates two discrete structures, galbonolides A and B, by alternatively incorporating methoxymalonate and methylmalonate, respectively.

Kitasatospora kifunensis, the talosin producer, was used as a source for the dTDP-6-deoxy-l-talose (dTDP-6dTal) biosynthetic gene cluster, serving as a template for four recombinant proteins of RmlA(Kkf), RmlB(Kkf), RmlC(Kkf), and Tal, which complete the biosynthesis of dTDP-6dTal from dTTP, alpha-d-glucose-1-phosphate, and NAD(P)H. The identity of dTDP-6dTal was validated using (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. K. kifunensistal and tll, the known dTDP-6dTal synthase gene of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans origin, have low sequence similarity and are distantly related within the NDP-6-deoxy-4-ketohexose reductase family, providing an example of the genetic diversity within the dTDP-6dTal biosynthetic pathway.

It is demonstrated that split-flow thin (SPLITT) fractionation, a continuous separation technique for sorting particles or macromolecules, can be utilized for the fractionation of environmental particles to study a size-dependent analysis of pollutants. In this study, focuses are made on the use of a pinched inlet gravitational SPLITT fractionation, a modified form of SPLITT channel formed by reducing the sample inlet thickness of the channel to improve separation efficiency, to separate marine sediments into five different sizes (<1.0, approximately 1.0 to 2.5, approximately 2.5 to 5.0, approximately 5.0 to 10, and approximately 10 to 53 microm). The resulting size fractions are examined with high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry to determine the size-dependent distribution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans along with a statistical data treatment and are analyzed with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry to ascertain its major and trace metals. It is shown that the combined analytical methods detailed in this study can be powerfully utilized in such a way as to analyze pollutant distribution and its concentration with regard to particle sizes for an environmental assessment.
