RESUMO

We report on a direct measurement of the quantum diffusion of H atoms in solid molecular hydrogen films at T=0.7 K. We obtained a rate of pure spatial diffusion of H atoms in the H_{2} films, D^{d}=5(2)×10^{-17} cm^{2} s^{-1}, which was 2 orders of magnitude faster than that obtained from H atom recombination, the quantity used in all previous work to characterize the mobility of H atoms in solid H_{2}. We also observed that the H-atom diffusion was significantly enhanced by injection of phonons. Our results provide the first measurement of the pure spatial diffusion rate for H atoms in solid H_{2}, the only solid state system beside ^{3}He-^{4}He mixtures, where atomic diffusion does not vanish even at temperatures below 1 K.

RESUMO

We report on an experimental observation of two phases of hydrogen atoms in solid H_{2} films at temperatures of 0.1-0.8 K, characterized by a large enhancement of the nuclear spin polarization compared to that given by Boltzmann statistics (p=0.15 at T=0.15 K). The first phase with p=0.35(5) is formed spontaneously during sample storage in a high magnetic field (B=4.6 T). The second phase with an even higher nuclear polarization, p=0.75(7), can be achieved at T≤0.55 K by repeating sequences of dynamic nuclear polarization followed by a system relaxation. Upon warming through the range 0.55-0.65 K, the highly nuclear-polarized phase undergoes a phase transition to the spontaneously polarized phase which breaks down at T≃0.8 K, and the nuclear polarization gradually converges to the Boltzmann distribution. We discuss possible scenarios for explaining the nature of the observed phenomena.

RESUMO

The vascular endothelium plays a critical role in cardiovascular homeostasis, and thus identifying the underlying causes of endothelial dysfunction has important clinical implications. In this regard, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) has recently emerged as an important regulator of metabolic processes. Dysfunction within the ER, broadly termed ER stress, evokes the unfolded protein response (UPR), an adaptive pathway that aims to restore ER homeostasis. Although the UPR is the first line of defense against ER stress, chronic activation of the UPR leads to cell dysfunction and death and has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction. Numerous risk factors for endothelial dysfunction can induce ER stress, which may in turn disrupt endothelial function via direct effects on endothelium-derived vasoactive substances or by activating other pathogenic cellular networks such as inflammation and oxidative stress. This review summarizes the available data linking ER stress to endothelial dysfunction.

RESUMO

We report on the first ESR study of atomic hydrogen and tritium stabilized in solid T2 and T2:H2 matrices down to 70 mK. The concentrations of T atoms in pure T2 approached 2 × 1020 cm-3 (0.60%) and record-high concentrations of H atoms ∼1 × 1020 cm-3 (0.33%) were reached in T2:H2 solid mixtures where a fraction of T atoms became converted into H due to the isotopic exchange reaction T + H2 → TH + H. The maximum concentrations of unpaired T and H atoms were limited by their recombination which becomes enhanced by efficient atomic diffusion due to the presence of a large number of vacancies and phonons generated in the matrices by ß-particles. Recombination also appeared in an explosive manner, both being stimulated and spontaneously in thick films where sample cooling was insufficient. We suggest that the main mechanism for H and T migration is physical diffusion related to tunneling or hopping to vacant sites in contrast to tunneling chemical exchange reactions which govern diffusion of H and D atoms created in H2 and D2 matrices by other methods.

RESUMO

We examined cross-sectional associations of metabolic syndrome and its components with male bone turnover, density and structure. Greater bone mass in men with metabolic syndrome was related to their greater body mass, whereas hyperglycaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia or impaired insulin sensitivity were associated with lower bone turnover and relative bone mass deficits. INTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been associated with lower bone turnover and relative bone mass or strength deficits (i.e. not proportionate to body mass index, BMI), but the relative contributions of MetS components related to insulin sensitivity or obesity to male bone health remain unclear. METHODS: We determined cross-sectional associations of MetS, its components and insulin sensitivity (by homeostatic model assessment-insulin sensitivity (HOMA-S)) using linear regression models adjusted for age, centre, smoking, alcohol, and BMI. Bone turnover markers and heel broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) were measured in 3129 men aged 40-79. Two centres measured total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine areal bone mineral density (aBMD, n = 527) and performed radius peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT, n = 595). RESULTS: MetS was present in 975 men (31.2 %). Men with MetS had lower ß C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide (ß-CTX), N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP) and osteocalcin (P < 0.0001) and higher total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine aBMD (P ≤ 0.03). Among MetS components, only hypertriglyceridaemia and hyperglycaemia were independently associated with PINP and ß-CTX. Hyperglycaemia was negatively associated with BUA, hypertriglyceridaemia with hip aBMD and radius cross-sectional area (CSA) and stress-strain index. HOMA-S was similarly associated with PINP and ß-CTX, BUA, and radius CSA in BMI-adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS: Men with MetS have higher aBMD in association with their greater body mass, while their lower bone turnover and relative deficits in heel BUA and radius CSA are mainly related to correlates of insulin sensitivity. Our findings support the hypothesis that underlying metabolic complications may be involved in the bone's failure to adapt to increasing bodily loads in men with MetS.

RESUMO

Analysis of old and recent experiments on thermoluminescence of cryocrystals and nanoclusters of N2, Ne, Ar, and Kr containing stabilized nitrogen atoms, suggests that the so-called γ-line may correspond to the bound-bound transition (1)D-(3)P of nitrogen anions N(-) formed in solids by the association of delocalized electrons and metastable nitrogen atoms N((2)D). The recent observations of the γ-line were accompanied by simultaneous luminescence of metastable nitrogen N((2)D) atoms and exoelectron emission. The fine structure of the γ-line at 793 nm has been experimentally observed and investigated for the first time.

RESUMO

We report on a study of the exchange tunneling reaction D + HD → D2 + H in a pure solid HD matrix and in a D2 matrix with a 0.23% HD admixture at temperatures between 130 mK and 1.5 K. We found that the exchange reaction rates, kexHD ∼ 3 × 10-27 cm3 s-1 in the pure HD matrix, and kexD2 = 9(4) × 10-28 cm3 s-1 in the D2 matrix, are nearly independent of temperature within this range. This confirms the quantum tunnelling nature of these reactions, and their ability to proceed at temperatures down to absolute zero. Based on these observations we concluded that exchange tunneling reaction H + H2 → H2 + H should also proceed in a H2 matrix at the lowest temperatures. On the other hand, the recombination of H atoms in solid H2 and D atoms in solid D2 is substantially suppressed at the lowest temperatures as a result of a decreased probability of resonant tunneling of atoms when they approach each other.

RESUMO

We examined the factors influencing gonorrhea detection at the pharynx. One hundred men infected with Neisseria gonorrhoeae were swabbed from the tonsils and posterior oropharynx. N. gonorrhoeae was reisolated from the tonsils and posterior oropharynx in 62% and 52%, respectively (P = 0.041). Culture positivity was greater with higher gonococcal DNA loads at the tonsils (P = 0.001) and oropharynx (P < 0.001). N. gonorrhoeae can be cultured from the tonsils and posterior oropharynx with greater isolation rates where gonococcal loads are higher.

RESUMO

We report on experimental observation of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC)-like behavior of quantized electron spin waves (magnons) in a dense gas of spin-polarized atomic hydrogen. The magnons are trapped and controlled with inhomogeneous magnetic fields and described by a Schrödinger-like wave equation, in analogy to the BEC experiments with neutral atoms. We have observed the appearance of a sharp feature in the ESR spectrum displaced from the normal spin wave spectrum. We believe that this observation corresponds to a sudden growth of the ground-state population of the magnons and emergence of their spontaneous coherence for hydrogen gas densities exceeding a critical value, dependent on the trapping potential. We interpret the results as a BEC of nonequilibrium magnons which were formed by applying the rf power.

RESUMO

We report on magnetic resonance studies of high-density atomic hydrogen and deuterium in solid hydrogen matrices at temperatures below 1 K. Average concentrations of H atoms ≈3×10(19) cm(-3) are obtained in chemical tunneling reactions of isotope exchange with D atoms. The products of these reactions are closely located pairs of H atoms near D2 molecules with strong exchange interactions. We discovered a dynamic nuclear polarization effect on H atoms created by pumping the center of the H electron spin resonance spectrum, similar to the Overhauser effect in metals. Our results indicate that H atoms may be arranged inside molecular matrices at separations equivalent to local concentrations of 2.6×10(21) cm(-3). This opens up a way to build a metallic state of atomic hydrogen at zero pressure.

RESUMO

We present investigations of the afterglow of oxygen-helium gas mixtures at cryogenic temperatures. The cooling of a helium jet containing trace amounts of oxygen after passing through a radio frequency discharge zone led to the observation of strong emissions from atomic oxygen. The effect results from the increasing efficiency of energy transfer from metastable helium atoms and molecules to oxygen impurities in the cold dense helium vapor. This effect might find an application for the detection of small quantities of the impurities in helium gas.

RESUMO

AIMS: We describe the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV in people aged ⩾45 years in England and provide future projections about the burden of STIs in this age group. METHODS: Analysis of national surveillance data in England from 2014 to 2019 for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, syphilis, anogenital warts and HIV was carried out. Time trends were assessed by the Poisson regression and reported using incidence rate ratios (IRRs). Two scenarios were modelled to predict the number of new STI diagnoses and associated costs in 2040. RESULTS: In 2019, there were 37,692 new STI diagnoses in people ⩾45 years in England. Between 2014 and 2019, there was a significant increase in the rate of new STI diagnoses in men (IRR = 1.05, p = .05) and those aged 45-64 years (IRR = 1.04, p = .05). Absolute numbers of new STI diagnoses in men who have sex with men increased by 76% between 2014 and 2019 (IRR = 1.15, p < .001). In adults aged ⩾50 years, the number of episodes of care for HIV increased over time (age = 50-64 years, IRR = 1.10; age = 65+ years, IRR = 1.13; p <.001). The modelled scenarios predicted an increase in STI diagnoses and costs in older people by 2040. CONCLUSION: STI rates in England are increasing in people aged ⩾45 years. The population is ageing and older people will contribute an increasing burden to STI costs if this trend continues. The reasons for this trend are not fully understood and further longitudinal epidemiological research is needed. Sexual health promotion campaigns and healthcare interventions targeted at older people should be prioritised.

RESUMO

Macroscopic ensembles of weakly interacting argon nanoclusters are studied using x-ray diffraction in low vacuum. As the clusters grow by fusion with increasing temperature, their structure transforms from essentially face-centered cubic (fcc) to hexagonal close packed as the cluster size approaches ~10(5) atoms. The transformation involves intermediate orthorhombic phases. These data confirm extant theoretical predictions. They also indicate that growth kinetics and spatial constraints might play an important role in the formation of the fcc structure of bulk rare-gas solids, which still remains puzzling.

RESUMO

A progressive decline in physiologic reserves inevitably occurs with ageing. Frailty results from reaching a threshold of decline across multiple organ systems. By consequence, frail elderly experience an excess vulnerability to stressors and are at high risk for functional deficits and comorbid disorders, possibly leading to institutionalization, hospitalization and death. The phenotype of frailty is referred to as the frailty syndrome and is widely recognized in geriatric medical practice. Although frailty affects both musculoskeletal and nonmusculoskeletal systems, sarcopenia, which is defined as age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, constitutes one of the main determinants of fracture risk in older age and one of the main components of the clinical frailty syndrome. As a result, operational definitions of frailty and therapeutic strategies in older patients tend to focus on the consequences of sarcopenia.

RESUMO

The role of thyroid hormones in the control of erectile functioning has been only superficially investigated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between thyroid and erectile function in two different cohorts of subjects. The first one derives from the European Male Ageing Study (EMAS study), a multicentre survey performed on a sample of 3369 community-dwelling men aged 40-79 years (mean 60 ± 11 years). The second cohort is a consecutive series of 3203 heterosexual male patients (mean age 51.8 ± 13.0 years) attending our Andrology and Sexual Medicine Outpatient Clinic for sexual dysfunction at the University of Florence (UNIFI study). In the EMAS study all subjects were tested for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4). Similarly, TSH levels were checked in all patients in the UNIFI study, while FT4 only when TSH resulted outside the reference range. Overt primary hyperthyroidism (reduced TSH and elevated FT4, according to the reference range) was found in 0.3 and 0.2% of EMAS and UNIFI study respectively. In both study cohorts, suppressed TSH levels were associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). Overt hyperthyroidism was associated with an increased risk of severe erectile dysfunction (ED, hazard ratio = 14 and 16 in the EMAS and UNIFI study, respectively; both p < 0.05), after adjusting for confounding factors. These associations were confirmed in nested case-control analyses, comparing subjects with overt hyperthyroidism to age, BMI, smoking status and testosterone-matched controls. Conversely, no association between primary hypothyroidism and ED was observed. In conclusion, erectile function should be evaluated in all individuals with hyperthyroidism. Conversely, assessment of thyroid function cannot be recommended as routine practice in all ED patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We describe a minimally invasive, image-guided technique for obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA) syndrome complicated by tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA). CASE: A 15-year-old female adolescent with OHVIRA syndrome presented with TOA. Magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen/pelvis showed a loculated pelvic mass and fluid collection near the obstructed left hemivagina. Tissue quality and ill-defined surgical planes prevented surgical excision. A transabdominal drain was placed via laparoscopic port by Interventional Radiology. She later underwent transvaginal and transabdominal drain placement into the hemivaginal collection using computed tomography and ultrasound guidance, allowing for surgical excision of the vaginal septum, drainage and excision of the TOA, and neosalpingostomy. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: Because of the anatomic complexity in OHVIRA syndrome, preoperative minimally invasive techniques with Interventional Radiology collaboration can assist intraoperative anatomic navigation for successful surgical treatment.

RESUMO

Using data from the third British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3) we examined associations between salivary testosterone (Sal-T) and sexual function and behavior. Single morning saliva samples were self-collected from a subsample of participants aged 18-74 years and analyzed using mass spectrometry. 1,599 men and 2,123 women were included in the analysis (40.6% of those invited to provide a sample). We adjusted for confounders in a stepwise manner: in model 1 we adjusted for age only; model 2 for age, season and relationship status, and model 3 we added BMI and self-reported health. In the fully adjusted models, among men, Sal-T was positively associated with both partnered sex (vaginal sex and concurrent partners) and masturbation. Among women, Sal-T was positively associated with masturbation, the only association with partnered sex was with ever experience of same-sex sex. We found no clear association between Sal-T and sexual function. Our study contributes toward addressing the sparsity of data outside the laboratory on the differences between men and women in the relationship between T and sexual function and behavior. To our knowledge, this is the first population study, among men and women, using a mass spectrometry Sal-T assay to do so.

RESUMO

CD7 is an immunoglobulin superfamily molecule involved in T and natural killer (NK) cell activation and cytokine production. CD7-deficient animals develop normally but have antigen-specific defects in interferon (IFN)-gamma production and CD8(+) CTL generation. To determine the in vivo role of CD7 in systems dependent on IFN-gamma, the response of CD7-deficient mice to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced shock syndromes was studied. In the high-dose LPS-induced shock model, 67% of CD7-deficient mice survived LPS injection, whereas 19% of control C57BL/6 mice survived LPS challenge (P < 0.001). CD7-deficient or C57BL/6 control mice were next injected with low-dose LPS (1 microgram plus 8 mg D-galactosamine [D-gal] per mouse) and monitored for survival. All CD7-deficient mice were alive 72 h after injection of LPS compared with 20% of C57BL/6 control mice (P < 0.001). After injection of LPS and D-gal, CD7-deficient mice had decreased serum IFN-gamma and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha levels compared with control C57BL/6 mice (P < 0.001). Steady-state mRNA levels for IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha in liver tissue were also significantly decreased in CD7-deficient mice compared with controls (P < 0.05). In contrast, CD7-deficient animals had normal liver interleukin (IL)-12, IL-18, and interleukin 1 converting enzyme (ICE) mRNA levels, and CD7-deficient splenocytes had normal IFN-gamma responses when stimulated with IL-12 and IL-18 in vitro. NK1.1(+)/ CD3(+) T cells are known to be key effector cells in the pathogenesis of toxic shock. Phenotypic analysis of liver mononuclear cells revealed that CD7-deficient mice had fewer numbers of liver NK1.1(+)/CD3(+) T cells (1.5 +/- 0.3 x 10(5)) versus C57BL/6 control mice (3.7 +/- 0.8 x 10(5); P < 0.05), whereas numbers of liver NK1.1(+)/CD3(-) NK cells were not different from controls. Thus, targeted disruption of CD7 leads to a selective deficiency of liver NK1.1(+)/ CD3(+) T cells, and is associated with resistance to LPS shock. These data suggest that CD7 is a key molecule in the inflammatory response leading to LPS-induced shock.

RESUMO

Radiation and high-dose chemotherapy may render women with cancer prematurely sterile, a side-effect that would be avoided if ovarian tissue that had been removed before treatment could be made to function afterwards. Live offspring have been produced from transplanted ovarian tissue in mice and sheep but not in monkeys or humans, although sex steroid hormones are still secreted. Here we describe the successful transplantation of fresh ovarian tissue to a different site in a monkey, which has led to the birth of a healthy female after oocyte production, fertilization and transfer to a surrogate mother. The ectopically grafted tissue functions without surgical connection to major blood vessels and sets the stage for the transplantation of cryopreserved ovarian tissue in humans.

RESUMO

We describe the design and construction of an experimental cell for the study of free radicals in macroscopically thick films of solidified molecular and rare gases by 128 GHz Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) at temperatures below 1 K. The ESR resonator has an open Fabry-Pérot design, and its frequency can be tuned in situ by adjusting the spacing between the mirrors. The tuning mechanism consists of a piezo positioner and a stainless-steel edge-welded bellows, which can change the resonator frequency by at least 6 GHz. The films of solidified gases can be deposited either directly from a room temperature reservoir or by recondensing from a specially arranged chamber. The free radicals can be created in the solid films by dissociating matrix species by running an rf discharge in a helium vapor. We suggest that such a sample cell design can also be used for a broad range of low-temperature ESR experiments where sample cooling needs to be enhanced by the presence of superfluid helium.
