RESUMO

BACKGROUND: By incorporating socio-cognitive mindfulness which has been under-examined in the nursing field, this study investigated the relationships between socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, dementia communication behaviors, and dementia nursing performance of nurses in long-term care hospitals. This study also examined the factors influencing nurses' dementia nursing performance. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 209 nurses from long-term care hospitals in Korea. Data were collected between August 1 and August 31, 2022. Participants completed the questionnaire assessing their socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, dementia communication behaviors, and dementia nursing performance. Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed for data analysis. RESULTS: Dementia nursing performance of the nurses in long-term care hospitals was positively related to their socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, and dementia communication behaviors. Furthermore, nurses' dementia communication behaviors, moral sensitivity, and total clinical career, in that order, were found to be the factors influencing their dementia nursing performance. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the higher socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, and dementia communication behaviors, the higher dementia nursing performance, and that higher dementia nursing performance is associated with better dementia communication behaviors, greater moral sensitivity, and more extensive clinical experiences. This study provides a foundation for developing effective interventions to enhance dementia nursing performance in the future. To improve dementia nursing performance of nurses in long-term care hospitals, it is necessary to improve dementia communication behaviors and moral sensitivity, and prepare multilateral countermeasures to maintain nurses' clinical careers.

RESUMO

AIM: This literature review examined the impact of the orientation or onboarding programs on the transition of foreign-educated nurses to a US healthcare setting and factors influencing their transition. BACKGROUND: Recruitment of foreign-educated nurses has been a solution to the ongoing nursing workforce shortage in the United States. However, they face various challenges in their transition to employment in the United States. Adequate orientation and continued support are needed for the successful transition of foreign-educated nurses. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in 2022 across PubMed, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE databases. This review selected only articles published between 2015 and 2022 in English that addressed foreign-educated nurses' transition issues in US healthcare settings. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The quality of the articles was appraised using the John Hopkins Evidence-based Practice tool. RESULTS: This review of 14 articles revealed that the quality of orientation and organizational support were positively associated with foreign-educated nurses' job satisfaction and turnover. Factors influencing foreign-educated nurses' transition included peer support, job assignment and workload, credentialing, communication and cultural adjustment, psychological factors, safety perceptions, work environment, and coping strategies. DISCUSSION: There was a lack of literature that evaluated orientation or onboarding programs for foreign-educated nurses. Further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of supportive programs in promoting their smooth transition. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND POLICY: Efficient onboarding or orientation programs and policies for foreign-educated nurses are crucial, considering the factors influencing their transition. Good programs and policies that prioritize the support, integration, and professional development of FENs will help maximize their contributions to health care.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acknowledging the under-examined research of socio-cognitive mindfulness and Gross's emotion regulation strategies in nursing, this study investigated the relationships between socio-cognitive mindfulness, emotion regulation (i.e., reappraisal and suppression), and empathy among nurses. It also explored the mediating effects of emotion regulation. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in a sample of 245 nurses from two university hospitals in South Korea. Convenience sampling was used to collect data between August 3 and September 29, 2020. Participants completed the questionnaire measuring their socio-cognitive mindfulness, emotion regulation, and empathy. Structural equation modeling and path analysis were conducted for data analysis. RESULTS: Socio-cognitive mindfulness positively influenced emotion regulation of reappraisal (ß = 0.404, p < 0.01) and empathy (ß = 0.402, p < 0.01), but negatively influenced emotion regulation of suppression (ß = -0.149, p < 0.05). Reappraisal positively influenced empathy (ß = 0.341, p < 0.01), whereas suppression negatively influenced empathy (ß = -0.127, p < 0.05). Importantly, emotion regulation of reappraisal mediated the association between socio-cognitive mindfulness and empathy (a X b = 0.107, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that socio-cognitive mindfulness is effective in improving empathy among nurses by enhancing reappraisal. This study can provide a foundation for developing socio-cognitive mindfulness or emotion regulation programs to improve empathy among nurses, which would ultimately lead to better nursing performance by increasing patient satisfaction.

RESUMO

Chronic pain is a significant health issue that affects approximately 50 million adults in the United States. Traditional interventions are not always an effective treatment strategy for pain control. However, the wide adoption of smartphones and the rapid growth of health information technologies over the past decade have created opportunities to use mobile health (mHealth) applications (apps) for pain tracking and self-management. In this PRISMA-compliant systematic review, we assessed the current U.S.-based research on pain-related mHealth apps to describe the app components and determine the efficacy of these interventions for persons with acute or chronic pain. We conducted a comprehensive search of five databases based on methodological guidelines from the Joanna Briggs Institute. We included articles reporting original data on mHealth interventions with pain intensity as a primary or secondary outcome and excluded articles that utilized multimodal interventions. Of the original 4959 articles, only five studies met the eligibility criteria. Most of the interventions included feasibility or pilot studies, and all studies were published between 2015 and 2018. Two of the five studies used visual analog scales. Only two of the studies reported statistically significant pain intensity outcomes, and considerable heterogeneity between the studies limited our ability to generalize findings or conduct a meta-analysis. Research investigating the components and efficacy of pain-related mHealth apps as interventions is an emerging field. To better understand the potential clinical benefits of mHealth apps designed to manage pain, further research is needed.

RESUMO

Data science continues to be recognized and used within healthcare due to the increased availability of large data sets and advanced analytics. It can be challenging for nurse leaders to remain apprised of this rapidly changing landscape. In this article, we describe our findings from a scoping literature review of papers published in 2019 that use data science to explore, explain, and/or predict 15 phenomena of interest to nurses. Fourteen of the 15 phenomena were associated with at least one paper published in 2019. We identified the use of many contemporary data science methods (eg, natural language processing, neural networks) for many of the outcomes. We found many studies exploring Readmissions and Pressure Injuries. The topics of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Acceptance, Burnout, Patient Safety, and Unit Culture were poorly represented. We hope that the studies described in this article help readers: (1) understand the breadth and depth of data science's ability to improve clinical processes and patient outcomes that are relevant to nurses and (2) identify gaps in the literature that are in need of exploration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Reflective practice affects all levels of nursing, including students, as well as practicing nurses. Self-reflective practice is a widespread concept in nursing; however, few empirical studies have demonstrated the possible effects of such a practice. The purpose of this integrative literature review was to identify evidence of the effects of self-reflective practice on baccalaureate-level nursing students, especially stress. METHODS: The literature search was conducted utilizing CINAHL and PubMed databases. The inclusion criteria were studies published between 2013 and 2018, articles that were peer-reviewed, written in English, and focused on nursing education of baccalaureate programs only. A total of 15 articles were reviewed. RESULTS: There is limited but growing evidence to suggest self-reflective practices have positive effects on baccalaureate-level nursing students. The self-reflective practices decreased stress and anxiety and increased learning, competency, and self-awareness of nursing practice. While written reflections were most commonly used in the studies, other forms of reflection, such as verbal and photography, were effective as well. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: Nursing students can benefit from incorporating reflection into the didactic and clinical settings. Nursing faculty are encouraged to integrate reflection into the nursing curriculum. Nurses within the first year of practice could benefit from using reflective practice as well. Experienced nurses and nurse managers can encourage and mentor novice nurses on the use and benefits of reflective practice.

RESUMO

Currently, microrobots are receiving attention because of their small size and motility, which can be applied to minimal invasive therapy. Additionally, various microrobots using hydrogel with the characteristics of biocompatibility and biodegradability are also being developed. Among them, microrobots that swell and deswell in response to temperature changes caused by external near infrared (NIR) stimuli, focused ultrasound, and an alternating magnetic field, have been receiving a great amount of interest as drug carriers for therapeutic cell delivery. In this study, we propose a spring type medical microrobot that can be manipulated by an electromagnetic actuation (EMA) system and respond to an external stimulus (NIR). Additionally, we verified its feasibility with regard to targeting and drug delivery. There exist various methods of fabricating a spring type microrobot. In this study, we adopted a simple method that entails using a perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) microtube and a syringe pump. Moreover, we also used a hydrogel mixture composed of natural alginate, N-Isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) for temperature responsiveness, and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for electromagnetic control. Then, we fabricated a spring type alginate/NIPAM hydrogel-based soft microrobot. Additionally, we encapsulated doxorubicin (DOX) for tumor therapy in the microrobot. To verify the feasibility of the proposed spring type hydrogel-based soft microrobot's targeting and drug delivery, we developed an EMA and NIR integrated system. Finally, we observed the swelling and deswelling of the soft microrobot under NIR stimulation and verified the EMA controlled targeting. Moreover, we implemented a control function to release the encapsulated anticancer drug (DOX) through the swelling and deswelling of the soft microrobot by NIR, and evaluated the feasibility of cancer cell therapy by controlling the release of the drug from the soft microrobot.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Patients with heart failure (HF) have notably poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL). A 5-point improvement in HRQOL is associated with reduction in hospitalization and mortality rates. Heart failure symptoms are associated with poor HRQOL, but little is known about whether changes in HF symptoms lead to changes in HRQOL over time. Therefore, we examined the association of changes in HF symptoms with changes in overall, physical, and emotional aspects of HRQOL over a 12-month period, controlling for typical covariates. METHODS: Data on HF symptoms and HRQOL (Minnesota Living Heart Failure questionnaire) were collected from 94 patients with HF (mean age, 58 years; 58.5% female) at baseline and 12-month follow-up. Psychosocial factors (depressive symptoms, perceived control, and social support), behavioral factors (medication adherence and sodium intake), sociodemographic and clinical factors (age, comorbidities, and body mass index), and a physical factor (functional status) were collected at baseline. Multiple and logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: In complete models, changes in HF symptoms were associated with changes in the total HRQOL (P < .001) and the physical (P < .001) and emotional (P < .001) aspects of HRQOL over 12 months, controlling for all the factors. Changes in HF symptoms were significantly associated with the likelihood of at least a 5-point improvement in HRQOL (P = .001), controlling for covariates. CONCLUSIONS: Improvement in HF symptoms was associated with improvement in HRQOL over 12 months. Thus, development and delivery of interventions that target improvement in HF symptoms may improve HRQOL.

RESUMO

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which nursing care compared to severity of illness (SOI) accounted for direct hospital costs. The type, frequency, and duration of nursing interventions required for patients undergoing total hip replacement surgery by the SOI stages with independent t-tests were identified. Although patients in Stage 3 generally needed a greater amount of each intervention than patients in Stage 2, the differences in needs for nursing interventions were not consistent using SOI. With hierarchical multiple regression analyses, results indicated nursing interventions explained significantly more variability in hospital care costs than SOI scores. Relying only on SOI scores for reimbursement may not accurately reflect the resource consumption of health care.

RESUMO

This study was initiated to isolate active metabolites from the leaves of Panax ginseng. Among them, picrionoside A, a megastigmane glucoside, was isolated from the leaves of P. ginseng C. A. MAYER and its chemical structure was determined based on spectroscopic methods, including FAB-MS, one-dimensional (1D)-NMR, 2D-NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Picrionoside A from P. ginseng has not been investigated previously, and its biological or pharmaceutical activities have not been reported elsewhere. The IC50 value of mushroom tyrosinase-inhibitory activity of picrionoside A was 9.8 µM, and the rate of inhibition of synthesized melanin content in melan-a cells was 17.1% at a concentration of 80 µM without cytotoxicity. Furthermore, picrionoside A dramatically reduced body pigmentation in the zebrafish model. Taken together, the results suggest that picrionoside A isolated from the leaves of P. ginseng may be an effective skin-whitening agent that could be a potent candidate material in the cosmetic industry.

RESUMO

AIM: The purposes of the study were to (i) identify the types and amounts of nursing interventions and (ii) estimate the cost-effectiveness of nursing interventions for complications the patients experienced when undergoing a total hip replacement (THR). BACKGROUND: There has been little cost-effectiveness research into nursing interventions in hospitals, resulting in an inability to explain the economic value of hospital nursing interventions. METHOD: The direct effects of nursing interventions on hospital direct costs and complication rates were analysed using path modelling, controlling for multiple factors (patient characteristics and nursing contexts) influencing nursing care. Then, cost-effectiveness ratios and the cost-effectiveness plane were used to identify cost-effective interventions. RESULTS: Intramuscular (IM)/Subcutaneous (SC) Administration was the most cost-effective nursing intervention, followed by Orthotics Management. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings can be used to promote nurses' knowledge and attitudes about the economic value of nursing and cost-effective care delivery. A sensitivity analysis with actual cost per nursing intervention and for specific complications will be necessary. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: It is important for nurse administrators to support nurses' clear documentation in order to make nursing information available. Utilizing study methods and findings, nurse managers can compare the cost-effectiveness of new nursing interventions or manage dosages of nursing interventions to provide the most cost-effective nursing interventions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While research on meditative mindfulness in nursing is abundant, research on socio-cognitive mindfulness is in its early stages despite its potential advantages to nursing practice and nursing education. This study introduces the under-examined concept of socio-cognitive mindfulness to the nursing field. OBJECTIVE: To identify what is known in the research field of socio-cognitive mindfulness in nursing. Specific aims were to identify the effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness on nurses and nursing students, and the application of socio-cognitive mindfulness interventions and their effectiveness in nursing. DESIGN: A scoping review following the Arksey and O'Malley framework. METHODS: An electronic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Web of Science, ERIC, and ProQuest databases was conducted. The search included full-text papers published in peer-reviewed journals in English. The included studies were independently examined by the two authors to ensure the thorough inclusion of relevant research by screening of titles and abstracts and screening of full-texts. The selected papers were categorized based on the specific objectives of the review. RESULTS: Out of 5,798 papers, six quantitative studies and one mixed method study were included in the review. Among the seven studies, two studies investigated the effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness on nurses, four examined the effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness on nursing students, and one conducted an intervention study applying socio-cognitive mindfulness and identified its effects on nurses. The findings revealed several benefits of applying socio-cognitive mindfulness to nursing practice and nursing education. Specifically, socio-cognitive mindfulness enhanced nurses' and nursing students' positive emotions and effective emotion regulation, which would positively influence nurses' nursing performance as well as students' academic outcomes and quality of college life. CONCLUSIONS: This study raises researchers' awareness of the significance of socio-cognitive mindfulness in nursing, and strongly recommends applying socio-cognitive mindfulness to nursing practice and nursing education and evaluating its effects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Understanding the psychological well-being (PWB) of university staff and factors that influence it is critical for developing intervention programs that promote PWB and enhance productivity and worker engagement. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the level of PWB in university staff and identify personal, social, and workplace environmental factors related to their PWB. METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlational study design was used. A convenience sample of university staff was recruited from two universities in Texas. Participants completed an online questionnaire, which included Ryff's PWB scale to measure PWB, along with questions related to personal, social, and workplace factors. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to analyze the influence of these factors on the PWB of university staff. RESULTS: The PWB of university staff (n = 202) was significantly influenced by personal factors (i.e., race and perceived mental health status), social factors (i.e., social support of friends), and workplace environmental factors (i.e., physical demands). CONCLUSION/APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: To effectively promote PWB among university staff, occupational health nurses should proactively track and monitor their PWB. Policies and interventions should consider the various personal, social, and workplace environment factors identified in this study, such as mental health, social support resources, and physical demands.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the characteristics and effects of virtual reality (VR) intravenous injection training programs for nurses and nursing students, using Kirkpatrick's four-level model of educational evaluation. Kirkpatrick's framework is based on the premise that learning from training programs can be classified into four levels: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. DESIGN: A systematic review. DATA SOURCES: Literature searches were conducted of eight electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, EMBASE, DBpia, KISS, RISS, KoreaMed) to identify original research articles from each database's inception to March 2023. REVIEW METHODS: For the 13 selected articles, quality appraisal was performed using the RoB 2 and ROBINS-I tools for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs, respectively. RESULTS: Virtual intravenous simulators and desktop and immersive VR technologies were utilized in intravenous injection training. These VR technologies were applied either alone or in conjunction with simulators, focusing on junior nursing students without intravenous injection experience. We found a positive effect on nursing students' intravenous injection performance (Level 2: learning evaluation) in approximately half the studies. However, results were inconsistent due to measurement tools' diversity. In all studies, the degree of evaluation for Levels 1 (reaction evaluation), 3 (behavior evaluation), and 4 (results evaluation) of the Kirkpatrick Model was low. CONCLUSIONS: Desktop or immersive VR with low-fidelity or high-fidelity simulators should be provided to senior nursing students and new nurses for intravenous injection training. Additionally, standardized tools should be developed to accurately measure training effects. Finally, the Kirkpatrick Model's four levels should be evaluated to demonstrate the training programs' value.

RESUMO

Purpose: In South Korea, hospitalized patients' experiences significantly impact satisfaction and treatment outcomes. This study developed and evaluated the Inpatients Experience Measurement Scale (IEMS) for its psychometric properties. Patients and Methods: Participants from three hospitals were recruited using convenience sampling. Scale item generation involved patient interviews and a Delphi survey with experts. Psychometric testing used Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) with 150 participants and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with 151 participants. Results: A total of 301 patients participated, resulting in a 20-item scale across four factors: "Care Quality and Information Provision", "Patient Safety and Dietary Services", "Facility and Comfort Infrastructure", and "Comprehensive Patient Support Services". Rated on a 5-point Likert scale, the scale showed a high Content Validity Index (CVI) over 0.80. EFA explained 61.43% of the variance. The four-factor model was validated using CFA with favorable fit indices. The IEMS demonstrated strong convergent validity, supported by high composite reliability (CR) and average variance extracted (AVE) values. Significant correlations with the Patient Satisfaction Scale reinforced its convergent validity. Discriminant validity was confirmed, and all reliability measures exceeded the minimum threshold of 0.80. Conclusion: The IEMS effectively captures inpatients' experiences, demonstrating robust reliability and validity. This scale is a valuable tool for assessing patient experiences, facilitating enhancements in patient care and satisfaction within hospital settings.

RESUMO

Brazilin, isolated from the methanol extract of the heart wood of Caesalpinia sappan, sensitizes cancer cells to apoptosis. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), which accounts for most cases of central nervous system malignancy, has a very poor prognosis and lacks effective therapeutic interventions. We, therefore, investigated the effects of different concentrations of and different periods of exposure to brazilin on cell proliferation and apoptosis in the glioma U87 cell line. Cell proliferation was investigated by MTT assays and growth curve analysis, apoptosis was assessed by FACS analysis and western blot studies. Brazilin showed dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis in glioma cells. It also increased the ratio of cleaved poly-(ADP)-ribose polymerase and decreased the expression of caspase-3 and caspase-7.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Incorporating socio-cognitive mindfulness, which has not received much attention from nursing researchers, this study investigated the structural relationships between socio-cognitive mindfulness, everyday creativity, and clinical competence among nursing students. This study also explored the mediating effect of everyday creativity. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed with 222 nursing students in South Korea. Students completed the questionnaire evaluating their own socio-cognitive mindfulness, everyday creativity, and clinical competence. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and path analysis. RESULTS: Socio-cognitive mindfulness positively influenced everyday creativity (ß = 0.791, p < 0.01), and everyday creativity also positively influenced clinical competence (ß = 0.470, p < 0.01). However, the relationship between socio-cognitive mindfulness and clinical competence was not significant. Importantly, everyday creativity fully mediated the relationship between socio-cognitive mindfulness and clinical competence (a × b = 0.372, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that socio-cognitive mindfulness effectively enhances nursing students' clinical competence by improving their everyday creativity. The mediating result highlights the significance of everyday creativity in nursing education, underscoring the necessity for training programs aimed at cultivating creativity. This research offers a basis for developing programs that concentrate on socio-cognitive mindfulness and everyday creativity, with the goal of enhancing the clinical competence of nursing students.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and most patients with cancer in South Korea die in hospitals. Oncology nurses experience physical, emotional, and occupational challenges associated with the psychological burden of caring for dying patients. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the coping strategies used by oncology nurses to deal with the psychological burden of patient deaths. METHODS: In this descriptive qualitative study, 10 oncology nurses who had recently experienced a patient's death were recruited via snowball sampling. All were female, with a mean age of 32.9 years (range, 27-44 years), and their mean working duration was 9.9 (range, 3-23) years. Participants were interviewed individually face-to-face 3 times, with each interview lasting 1 to 1.5 hours. RESULTS: Oncology nurses coped with the psychological burden of a patient's death in the following 4 ways: ( a ) avoiding patient deaths to the extent possible, ( b ) reflecting upon the meaning of life and death, ( c ) suppressing their emotional distress over the patient's death, and ( d ) becoming kinder and more caring toward people around them. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that oncology nurses struggle to cope with the psychological burden of patient deaths. Oncology nurses are affected both negatively and positively by experiencing death as they provide end-of-life care. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Oncology nurses need education or counseling to reduce the psychological burden of caring for dying patients with cancer. Hospital administrators need to continuously identify ways to reduce the psychological burden of oncology nurses providing end-of-life care.

RESUMO

AIM: This integrative review aimed to identify nursing students' experiences of handoff practices and the effects of handoff education in the curriculum on nursing student learning outcomes. BACKGROUND: Appropriate handoff communication skills are essential for nursing students to maintain patient safety and prevent adverse events. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted with keywords related to nursing, student, and handoff in April 2020. Articles should focus on nursing students' handoff education published in English in 2015-2020. Eight articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. RESULTS: Nursing students reported discrepancies in handoff experiences; diverse factors influenced their handoff experiences, such as knowledge, anxiety, confidence, and type of student supervision. Various handoff educations were implemented across studies. Some handoff educations significantly improved nursing students' attitudes toward other disciplinary providers, satisfaction, confidence, quality, and clarity in handoff communication; some did not substantially affect their selected outcomes. CONCLUSION: This review identified that there are still limited handoff experiences among nursing students and many factors affecting opportunities for their handoff experience. Some handoff education (e.g., structured handoff formats, role-play, simulated scenarios) effectively improved students' communication clarity, confidence levels, and handoff education satisfaction. More handoff education is needed for nursing students to learn safe and quality handoff practices.
