SignificanceAdjusting the floating states when objects float on water shows great potential for assembly, mineral flotation, nanostructured construction, and floating robot design, but the real-time regulation of floating states is challenging. Inspired by the different floating states of a falling fruit, we propose a facile strategy to transform the object between different floating states based on a three-segment three-phase contact line evolution. In addition, the potential of floating state transformation in solar-powered water evaporation, interface catalysis, and drug delivery is demonstrated. These findings provide insights into floating regulation and show great potential for floating-related applications.

BACKGROUND: Cell senescence is a sign of aging and plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of age-related disorders. For cell therapy, senescence may compromise the quality and efficacy of cells, posing potential safety risks. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are currently undergoing extensive research for cell therapy, thus necessitating the development of effective methods to evaluate senescence. Senescent MSCs exhibit distinctive morphology that can be used for detection. However, morphological assessment during MSC production is often subjective and uncertain. New tools are required for the reliable evaluation of senescent single cells on a large scale in live imaging of MSCs. RESULTS: We have developed a successful morphology-based Cascade region-based convolution neural network (Cascade R-CNN) system for detecting senescent MSCs, which can automatically locate single cells of different sizes and shapes in multicellular images and assess their senescence state. Additionally, we tested the applicability of the Cascade R-CNN system for MSC senescence and examined the correlation between morphological changes with other senescence indicators. CONCLUSIONS: This deep learning has been applied for the first time to detect senescent MSCs, showing promising performance in both chronic and acute MSC senescence. The system can be a labor-saving and cost-effective option for screening MSC culture conditions and anti-aging drugs, as well as providing a powerful tool for non-invasive and real-time morphological image analysis integrated into cell production.

Background: Acupuncture therapy has demonstrated significant efficacy in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia, effectively alleviating pain intensity and enhancing patients' quality of life. However, the effectiveness of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia remains a subject of controversy. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture for postherpetic neuralgia. Methods: We identified relevant randomized controlled trials by conducting a comprehensive search in multiple databases: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Literature, Wanfang Data, PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, and Web of Science. The outcome included efficacy rate, visual analog scale (VAS)scores and pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scores. We meticulously assessed the risk of bias in the included trials and performed a meta-analysis. Results: We analyzed 9 randomized controlled trials involving 639 patients. Collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture achieved a significantly higher efficacy rate (risk ratio, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.13-1.31]; P < .001), reduced theVAS scores (standardized mean difference, -1.52 [95% CI, -2.26 to -0.79]; P < .001), and improved the PSQI scores (standardized mean difference, -2.31 [95% CI, -3.97 to -0.64]; P = .007) compared with the control groups. The subgroup analysis revealed that the combined treatment of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping and electroacupuncture had a significantly higher total effective rate compared with the carbamazepine, electroacupuncture, and pregabalin groups (P < .05). The total efficacy rate of the collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture group was superior to that of the control group, irrespective of whether 2 or 3 courses were administered (P < .05). Conclusion: Existing evidence suggests that the combination of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping and electroacupuncture demonstrates efficacy in pain relief, improvement of sleep quality, and enhanced therapeutic outcomes for patients with postherpetic neuralgia. However, further validation through large-scale multicenter randomized controlled trials is warranted due to the limited quantity and quality of the included literature in this study.

Ceramic nanofibrous nanostructure-based sponges have attracted significant attention due to ultrahigh porosity, low thermal conductivity, large specific area, and chemical stability. From the regulation of the fiber itself to the construction method of 3D networks, efforts are being made to improve the mechanical properties of ceramic sponges for practical applications. So far resilient compressibility has been realized in ceramic nanofibrous-based sponges via structural design, but they still show brittle fracture under a more complex stress state. Herein, we introduced a highly aligned and interwoven Si3N4 nanofiber sponge, which exhibits superflexibility, large break elongation (>80%), large-strain reversible stretch (20%), and good resistance to tensile fatigue. The ceramic sponge also displays reversible compressibility up to 60% strain, puncture resistance, high air filtration efficiency (>99.8%), and low pressure drop (38% of cotton fiber), making the ceramic sponge a high-performance wearable respirator to protect us from harm due to PM2.5 pollution and possible microorganisms.

We conducted this study aimed to evaluate the analgesic effect of dexmedetomidine in thoracoscopic surgery on postoperative wound pain, and to provide a reference for clinical use of the drug. We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Wanfang, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases, and supplemented with manual searching. We searched from database inception to October 2023, to collect the randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on dexmedetomidine application in thoracoscopic surgery. Two researchers screened all the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and the literature included in the study was evaluated for quality, extracted information and required data. Stata 17.0 software was employed for data analysis and the outcomes were 2 6, 12, 24 and 48 h postoperative wound visual analog scores (VAS). Twenty-four RCTs totalling 2246 patients undergoing thoracoscopic surgery were finally included. The analysis revealed dexmedetomidine applied to thoracoscopic surgery significantly reduced the postoperative wound VAS scores at 2 h (SMD: -0.96, 95% CI: -1.57 to -0.36, p = 0.002), 6 h (SMD: -0.98, 95% CI: -1.27 to -0.69, p < 0.001), 12 h (SMD: -1.19, 95% CI: -1.44 to -0.94, p < 0.001), 24 h (SMD: -0.91, 95% CI: -1.16 to -0.66, p < 0.001) and 48 h (SMD: -0.75, 95% CI: -1.02 to -0.48, p < 0.001). Our results suggest dexmedetomidine applied to thoracoscopic surgery can significantly reduce postoperative wound pain, which is worthy of clinical application.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) accounts for 90% of esophageal cancers and has a high mortality rate worldwide. The 5-year survival rate of ESCC patients in developing countries is <20%. Hence, there is an urgent need for developing new and effective treatments that are based on newly-discovered emerging molecules and pathways to prevent ESCC occurrence and recurrence. We investigated the effects of Daurisoline, a bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid extracted from the rhizome of menisperum dauricum, on ESCC cell proliferation and elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying its functions. To explore the effects of Daurisoline on ESCC growth in vitro and in vivo, cell proliferation assays and anchorage-independent growth assays were performed and a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model was established. Subsequently, phosphoproteomics, molecular docking analysis, pull down assays, mutation experiments and in vitro kinase assay were performed to explore the mechanism of Daurisoline's function on ESCC. Daurisoline inhibited ESCC proliferation in vitro and reduced ESCC PDX exnograft growth in vivo by reducing ERK1/2 phosphorylation. Furthermore, it directly bound to MEK1 (at Asn78 and Lys97) and MEK2 (at Asp194 and Asp212) kinases to inactivate the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Our results suggest that Daurisoline is a dual inhibitor of MEK1 and MEK2 and suppresses ESCC growth both in vitro and in vivo by inactivating the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. This is first report on the use of MEK inhibitor for ESCC and highlights its potential applications for ESCC treatment and prevention.

KEY MESSAGE: The leaf rust resistance gene Lr19, which is present on the long arm of chromosome 7E1 in Thinopyrum ponticum, was mapped within a 0.3-cM genetic interval, and translocation lines were developed to break its linkage with yellow pigmentation The leaf rust resistance locus Lr19, which was transferred to wheat (Triticum aestivum) from its relative Thinopyrum ponticum in 1966, still confers broad resistance to most known races of the leaf rust pathogen Puccinia triticina (Pt) worldwide. However, this gene has not previously been fine-mapped, and its tight linkage with a gene causing yellow pigmentation has limited its application in bread wheat breeding. In this study, we genetically mapped Lr19 using a bi-parental population from a cross of two wheat-Th. ponticum substitution lines, the Lr19-carrying line 7E1(7D) and the leaf rust-susceptible line 7E2(7D). Genetic analysis of the F2 population and the F2:3 families showed that Lr19 was a single dominant gene. Genetic markers allowed the gene to be mapped within a 0.3-cM interval on the long arm of Th. ponticum chromosome 7E1, flanked by markers XsdauK3734 and XsdauK2839. To reduce the size of the Th. ponticum chromosome segment carrying Lr19, the Chinese Spring Ph1b mutant was employed to promote recombination between the homoeologous chromosomes of the wheat chromosome 7D and the Th. ponticum chromosome 7E1. Two translocation lines with short Th. ponticum chromosome fragments carrying Lr19 were identified using the genetic markers closely linked to Lr19. Both translocation lines were resistant to 16 Pt races collected throughout China. Importantly, the linkage between Lr19 and yellow pigment content was broken in one of the lines. Thus, the Lr19 linked markers and translocation lines developed in this study are valuable resources in marker-assisted selection as part of common wheat breeding programs.

Vigilance is highly sensitive to the time-of-day effect and goes through the daytime trough during the period of the post-noon dip. A midday nap could maintain individuals' vigilance at an optimal level. Thus, homeostatic sleep pressure is one of the main reasons for the post-noon dip in daytime vigilance. The current study focussed on the role of homeostatic sleep pressure in the diurnal variation of vigilance performance with normal circadian rhythms and the corresponding neural basis. With 34 healthy adults, we recorded the resting-state electroencephalogram activities and the following vigilance performance measured by psychomotor vigilance test in the morning, the no-nap mid afternoon, and the nap mid afternoon. The circadian process was controlled by measuring vigilance and resting-state electroencephalogram activities at the same time point in the nap and no-nap conditions. Homeostatic sleep pressure accumulated from morning to mid afternoon induced the declined vigilance performance and a global increase in resting-state delta, theta, alpha, and beta1 bands power, and a local increase in beta2 band power in the central region. Furthermore, the more the spontaneous beta2 power increased, the less vigilance declined from morning to mid afternoon. The current findings suggest that homeostatic sleep pressure increased cortical excitability but decreased cortical communication efficiency from morning to mid afternoon. In addition, the activity of the high beta waves probably reflected the compensatory effort to counteract the negative impact of the low arousal state on the following vigilance task by performing more action preparation in the no-nap afternoon.

This study was conducted to assess the effects of dietary copper source and level on hematological parameters, copper accumulation and transport, resistance to low temperature, antioxidant capacity and immune response of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei Boone, 1931). Seven experimental diets with different copper sources and levels were formulated: C, no copper supplementation; S, 30 mg/kg copper in the form of CuSO4·5H2O; SO, 15 mg/kg copper in CuSO4·5H2O + 7.5 mg/kg copper in Cu-proteinate; O1, O2, O3 and O4, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg/kg copper in the form of Cu-proteinate, respectively. A total of 840 shrimp (5.30 ± 0.04 g) were randomly distributed to 21 tanks (3 tanks/diet, 40 shrimp/tank). An 8-week feeding trial was conducted. The results showed that there was no significant difference in growth performance and whole shrimp chemical compositions among all groups. Compared with inorganic copper, dietary organic copper (O2 and O3) increased total protein, albumin, and glucose content of plasma, while decreased triglyceride and total cholesterol of plasma. Copper concentration in plasma and muscle and gene expression of metallothionein and copper-transporting ATPase 2 like in hepatopancreas were higher in shrimp fed organic copper (SO, O2, O3 and O4). The lowest mortality after low temperature (10 °C) challenge test was observed in the O2 and O3 groups. Organic copper (SO, O2, O3 and O4) significantly enhanced the antioxidant capacity (in terms of higher activities of total superoxide dismutase, copper zinc superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity, lower malondialdehyde concentration of plasma, and up-regulated gene expression of superoxide dismutase, copper zinc superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase of hepatopancreas). Organic copper (SO, O2, O3 and O4) enhanced the immune response (in terms of higher number of total hemocytes, higher activities of acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, phenoloxidase, hemocyanin and lysozyme in plasma, and higher gene expressions of alkaline phosphatase, lysozyme and hemocyanin in hepatopancreas). Inorganic copper (Diet S) also had positive effects on white shrimp compared with the C diet, but the SO, O2, O3 and O4 diets resulted in better results, among which the O2 diet appeared to be the best one. In conclusion, organic copper was more beneficial to shrimp health than copper sulfate.

Elevated hepatic gluconeogenesis is a major contributor of fasting hyperglycemia in diabetes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are tightly linked to glucose metabolism, but their role in hepatic gluconeogenesis remains largely unkown. In this current study, miR-34a-5p expression was significantly increased in liver tissues of db/db mice. Overexpression of miR-34a-5p promoted hepatic glucose production in mouse primary hepatocytes with increased expressions of gluconeogenic genes while miR-34a-5p inhibition displayed a contrary action. MiR-34a-5p overexpression in mouse primary hepatocytes repressed SIRT1 expression. SIRT1 inhibition by EX527 blocked phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) protein degradation and enhanced hepatic gluconeogenesis. Treatment of A485 (a CBP/p300 inhibitor) decreased miR-34a-5p and PEPCK expressions in the livers of db/db mice, but elevated SIRT1 protein expression. In mouse primary hepatocytes, A485 exhibited a similar result. Overexpression of miR-34a-5p attenuated A485-inhibited gluconeogenic gene expressions and A485-induced SIRT1 protein expression. Finally, after miR-34a-5p was inhibited in the livers of db/db mice, hepatic glucose production and gluconeogenic gene expressions were markedly lowered. Our findings highlight a critical role of miR-34a-5p in the regulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis and miR-34a-5p may be a potential target in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Scoliosis is a common spinal deformity that considerably affects the physical and psychological health of patients. Studies have shown that genetic factors play an important role in scoliosis. However, its etiopathogenesis remain unclear, partially because of the genetic heterogeneity of scoliosis and the lack of appropriate model systems. Recently, the development of efficient gene editing methods and high-throughput sequencing technology has made it possible to explore the underlying pathological mechanisms of scoliosis. Owing to their susceptibility for developing scoliosis and high genetic homology with human, zebrafish are increasingly being used as a model for scoliosis in developmental biology, genetics, and clinical medicine. Here, we summarize the recent advances in scoliosis research on zebrafish and discuss the prospects of using zebrafish as a scoliosis model.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an increasingly important foodborne pathogen that cause acute gastroenteritis in humans. However, the prevalence and transmission of this pathogen in freshwater food remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the molecular characteristics and genetic relatedness of V. parahaemolyticus isolates obtained from freshwater food, seafood, environmental, and clinical samples. A total of 138 (46.6%) isolates were detected from 296 food and environmental samples, and 68 clinical isolates from patients. Notably, V. parahaemolyticus was more prevalent in freshwater food (56.7%, 85/150) than in seafood (38.8%, 49/137). Virulence phenotype analyses revealed that the high motility of isolates from freshwater food (40.0%) and clinical isolates (42.0%) was higher than that of isolates from seafood (12.2%), whereas the biofilm-forming capacity of freshwater food isolates (9.4%) was lower than that of seafood (22.4%) and clinical isolates (15.9%). Virulence genes analysis showed that 46.4% of the clinical isolates contained the tdh gene encoding thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) and only two freshwater food isolates contained the trh gene encoding TDH-related hemolysin (TRH). Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis divided the 206 isolates into 105 sequence types (STs), including 56 (53.3%) novel STs. ST2583, ST469, and ST453 have been isolated from freshwater food and clinical samples. Whole-genome sequence (WGS) analyses revealed that the 206 isolates were divided into five clusters. Cluster II contained isolates from freshwater food and clinical samples, whereas the other clusters contained isolates from seafood, freshwater food, and clinical samples. In addition, we observed that ST2516 had the same virulence pattern, with a close phylogenetic relationship to ST3. The increased prevalence and adaption of V. parahaemolyticus in freshwater food is a potential cause of clinical cases closely related to the consumption of V. parahaemolyticus contaminated freshwater food.

Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been utilized for approximately 2,000 years. However, as cultivation has increased, there have been more reports of A. carmichaelii infections caused by four major pathogenic fungal species, Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, Mucor circinelloides, and Sclerotium rolfsii, resulting in increased disease incidences and limited production and quality. To detect these infections, we developed a LAMP-based toolbox in this study. The cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene, translation elongation factor-1α (EF-1α), internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of rDNA, and alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1) gene, respectively, were used to design species-specific LAMP primer sets for F. oxysporum, F. solani, S. rolfsii, and M. circinelloides. The results showed that the LAMP-based toolbox was effective at detecting pathogens in soil and plant materials. We also used this toolbox to investigate pathogen infection in the main planting regions of A. carmichaelii. Before harvesting, F. oxysporum, M. circinelloides, and S. rolfsii were commonly found in the planting fields and in infected A. carmichaelii plants. Therefore, the toolbox we developed will be useful for tracking these infections, as well as for disease control in A. carmichaelii.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a cellular-level hadron therapy achieving therapeutic effects via the synergistic action of multiple particles, including Lithium, alpha, proton, and photon. However, evaluating the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) in BNCT remains challenging. In this research, we performed a microdosimetric calculation for BNCT using the Monte Carlo track structure (MCTS) simulation toolkit, TOPAS-nBio. This paper reports the first attempt to derive the ionization cross-sections of low-energy (>0.025 MeV/u) Lithium for MCTS simulation based on the effective charge cross-section scalation method and phenomenological double-parameter modification. The fitting parameters λ1=1.101,λ2=3.486 were determined to reproduce the range and stopping power data from the ICRU report 73. Besides, the lineal energy spectra of charged particles in BNCT were calculated, and the influence of sensitive volume (SV) size was discussed. Condensed history simulation obtained similar results with MCTS when using Micron-SV while overestimating the lineal energy when using Nano-SV. Furthermore, we found that the microscopic boron distribution can significantly affect the lineal energy for Lithium, while the effect for alpha is minimal. Similar results to the published data by PHITS simulation were observed for the compound particles and monoenergetic protons when using micron-SV. Spectra with nano-SV reflected that the different track densities and absorbed doses in the nucleus together result in the dramatic difference in the macroscopic biological response of BPA and BSH. This work and the developed methodology could impact the research fields in BNCT where understanding radiation effects is crucial, such as the treatment planning system, source evaluation, and new boron drug development.

Mast cells can recognize foot-and-mouth disease virus-like particles (FMDV-VLPs) via mannose receptors (MRs) to produce differentially expressed cytokines. The regulatory role of chromatin accessibility in this process is unclear. Bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) were cultured, and an assay of transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing (ATAC-seq) was applied to demonstrate the regulation of chromatin accessibility in response to the BMMCs' recognition of FMDV-VLPs. A pathway enrichment analysis showed that peaks associated with the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase-protein kinase B (PI3K-Akt), and other signaling pathways, especially the NF-κB pathway, were involved in the BMMCs' recognition of VLPs. Moreover, transcription factors including SP1, NRF1, AP1, GATA3, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), and NF-κB-p65 may bind to the motifs with altered chromatin accessibility to regulate gene transcription. Furthermore, the expression of NF-κB, interleukin (IL)-9, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon (IFN)-γ in the BMMCs of the VLP group increased compared with that of the BMMCs in the control group, whereas the expression of IL-10 did not differ significantly between groups. After inhibiting the MRs, the expression of NF-κB, IL-9, TNF-α, and IFN-γ decreased significantly, whereas the expression of IL-10 increased. The expression of MAPK and IL-6 showed no significant change after MR inhibition. This study demonstrated that MRs expressed on BMMCs can affect the NF-κB pathway by changing chromatin accessibility to regulate the transcription of specific cytokines, ultimately leading to the differential expression of cytokines. These data provide a theoretical basis and new ideas for the development of a novel vaccine for FMD.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a moderately halophilic foodborne pathogen that is mainly distributed in marine and freshwater environments. The transition of V. parahaemolyticus between aquatic ecosystems and hosts is essential for infection. Both freshwater and host environments have low salinity. In this study, we sought to further investigate the effects of low salinity (0.5% NaCl) on the fitness and virulence of V. parahaemolyticus. We found that V. parahaemolyticus could survive in Luria-Bertani (LB) and M9 mediums with different NaCl concentrations, except for the M9 medium containing 9% NaCl. Our results further showed that V. parahaemolyticus cultured in M9 medium with 0.5% NaCl had a higher cell density than that cultured at other NaCl concentrations when it entered the stationary phase. Therefore, we compared the transcriptomes of V. parahaemolyticus wild type (WT) cultured in an M9 medium with 0.5% and 3% NaCl at the stationary phase using RNA-seq. A total of 658 genes were significantly differentially expressed in the M9 medium with 0.5% NaCl, including regulators, osmotic adaptive responses (compatible solute synthesis systems, transporters, and outer membrane proteins), and virulence factors (T3SS1 and T6SS1). Furthermore, a low salinity concentration in the M9 medium induced the expression of T3SS1 to mediate the cytotoxicity of V. parahaemolyticus to HeLa cells. Similarly, low salinity could also induce the secretion of the T3SS2 translocon protein VPA1361. These factors may result in the high pathogenicity of V. parahaemolyticus in low-salinity environments. Taken together, these results suggest that low salinity (0.5% NaCl) could affect gene expression to mediate fitness and virulence, which may contribute to the transition of V. parahaemolyticus between aquatic ecosystems and the host.

To investigate the dietary cholesterol requirements of large red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), crayfish (initial body weight: 13.49 ± 0.22 g) were hand-fed six diets containing 2.47 (C0), 4.27 (C1), 6.80 (C2), 8.77 (C3), 11.74 (C4), and 14.24 (C5) g/kg cholesterol. After 8 weeks of feeding, the maximum weight gain rate and specific growth rate occurred in group C4. The lowest feed conversion ratio was observed in group C3. Total flesh percentage increased significantly by 15.33% in group C2 compared to group C0. The increase in dietary cholesterol resulted in significant quadratic trends in concentrations of crude protein and lipid in muscle and whole body; cholesterol and free fatty acid in hemolymph, hepatopancreas, and muscle; activities of lipase and amylase in hepatopancreas and intestine; and total antioxidant capacity and catalase activity in hepatopancreas. Group C3 experienced a noteworthy increase in hemolymph glucose and total protein content compared to group C0. Additionally, malondialdehyde content and superoxide dismutase activity in hepatopancreas displayed significant linear and quadratic trends. The optimal dietary cholesterol level for large P. clarkii is between 7.42 and 10.93 g/kg, as revealed by the quadratic regression analysis.

Atomically dispersed Fe was designed on TiO2 and explored as a Janus electrocatalyst for both nitrogen oxidation reaction (NOR) and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in a two-electrode system. Pulsed electrochemical catalysis (PE) was firstly involved to inhibit the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Excitingly, an unanticipated yield of 7055.81 µmol h-1 g-1 cat. and 12 868.33 µmol h-1 g-1 cat. were obtained for NOR and NRR at 3.5 V, respectively, 44.94 times and 7.8 times increase in FE than the conventional constant voltage electrocatalytic method. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the single-atom Fe could stabilize the oxygen vacancy, lower the energy barrier for the vital rupture of N≡N, and result in enhanced N2 fixation performance. More importantly, PE could effectively enhance the N2 supply by reducing competitive O2 and H2 agglomeration, inhibit the electrocatalytic by-product formation for longstanding *OOH and *H intermediates, and promote the non-electrocatalytic process of N2 activation.

Vigilance instability in the sleep-deprived state was deemed to result from the imbalance in thalamic-FPN-DMN circuits (FPN: frontoparietal network; DMN: default mode network), but the behavioural correlation of this neural hypothesis is still unclear. To address this issue, we applied dynamic functional connectivity (DFC) analysis on the task-based fMRI data and detected high arousal state (HAS) and low arousal state (LAS). Relative to HAS, LAS demonstrated higher positive connectivity within task-positive networks (TPN), attenuated TPN-DMN anti-correlation, and greater anti-correlation between cerebral and subcortico-cerebellar networks. Critically, DFC differences between HAS and LAS were correlated with the ongoing vigilance performance in the sleep-deprived state. The current findings confirmed a direct link between vigilance instability and DFC in the thalamic-FPN-DMN circuits. In particular, we postulated that the integration within task-related system and segregation between task-related system and the subcortico-cerebellar system might be the critical neural markers underlying vigilance instability in the sleep-deprived state.

Nonlinear elastic materials are significant for engineering and micromechanics. Droplets with the merits of easy-accessibility, diversity, and energy-absorption capability exhibit a variety of non-Hookean elastic behaviors. Herein, benefiting from the confinement of heterogeneous-wettable parallel plates, the non-Hookean mechanics of the droplet-based spring are systematically investigated. Experimental results and theoretical analysis reveal that the force generated by the spring varies nonlinearly with its deformation, and a force model is accordingly built to depict the mechanics of springs with different sized/numbered droplets and confined by different wettability patterns. Importantly, for the droplet-based spring, the droplet-plate contact area expands nonlinearly with the pressing force, which is employed to optimize the output performance of the droplet-based triboelectric nanogenerator to 226% compared with the control test. This finding deepens the understanding of the non-Hookean behavior of droplet-based springs, and sheds light on applications in energy harvesting, micromechanics, and miniature optic/electric devices.
