RESUMO

Regulation of mRNA translation is essential for brain development and function. Translation elongation factor eEF2 acts as a molecular hub orchestrating various synaptic signals to protein synthesis control and participates in hippocampus-dependent cognitive functions. However, whether eEF2 regulates other behaviors in different brain regions has been unknown. Here, we construct a line of Eef2 heterozygous (HET) mice, which show a reduction in eEF2 and protein synthesis mainly in excitatory neurons of the prefrontal cortex. The mice also show lower spine density, reduced excitability, and AMPAR-mediated synaptic transmission in pyramidal neurons of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). While HET mice exhibit normal learning and memory, they show defective social behavior and elevated anxiety. Knockdown of Eef2 in excitatory neurons of the mPFC specifically is sufficient to impair social novelty preference. Either chemogenetic activation of excitatory neurons in the mPFC or mPFC local infusion of the AMPAR potentiator PF-4778574 corrects the social novelty deficit of HET mice. Collectively, we identify a novel role for eEF2 in promoting prefrontal AMPAR-mediated synaptic transmission underlying social novelty behavior.

RESUMO

A series of boron-promoted Ni-Co/Ca catalysts were synthesized by the sol-gel method to enhance syngas generation from biomass pyrolysis. The efficiency of these catalysts was evaluated during the pyrolysis of rice straw in a fixed-bed reactor, varying the Ni/Co ratio, boron addition, calcination temperature, and residence time. The catalysts underwent comprehensive characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR). The results indicated that the Ni-Co/Ca catalysts yielded superior syngas compared to singular Ni or Co catalysts, suggesting a synergistic interplay between nickel and cobalt. The incorporation of 4% boron significantly decreased the particle size of the active metals, enhancing both the catalytic activity and stability. Optimal syngas production was achieved under the following conditions: a biomass-to-catalyst mass ratio of 2:1, a Ni-Co ratio of 1:1, a calcination temperature of 400 °C, a pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C, and a 20 min residence time. These conditions led to a syngas yield of 431.8 mL/g, a 131.28% increase over the non-catalytic pyrolysis yield of 188.6 mL/g. This study not only demonstrates the potential of Ni-Co/Ca catalysts in biomass pyrolysis for syngas production but also provides a foundation for future catalyst performance optimization.

Disordered gut microbiota (GM) structure and function may contribute to osteoporosis (OP). Nodakenin has been shown to ameliorate osteoporosis; however, its anti-osteoporotic mechanism is unknown. This study aimed to further reveal the mechanism of the anti-osteoporotic action of nodakenin from the perspective of the microbiome and metabolome. An osteoporosis model was induced in mice through ovariectomy (OVX), with bone mass and microstructure assessed using µCT. Subsequently, ELISA and histologic examination were used to detect biochemical indicators of bone conversion and intestinal morphology. Using metabolomics and 16S rRNA sequencing, it was possible to determine the composition and abundance of the gut microbiota in feces. The results revealed that nodakenin treatment improved the bone microstructure and serum levels of bone turnover markers, and increased the intestinal mucosal integrity. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that nodakenin treatment decreased the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Patescibacteria, as well as the F/B ratio, and elevated the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes in OVX mice. In addition, nodakenin enhanced the relative abundance of Muribaculaceae and Allobaculum, among others, at the genus level. Moreover, metabolomics analysis revealed that nodakenin treatment significantly altered the changes in 113 metabolites, including calcitriol. A correlation analysis revealed substantial associations between various gut microbiota taxa and both the osteoporosis phenotype and metabolites. In summary, nodakenin treatment alleviated OVX-induced osteoporosis by modulating the gut microbiota and intestinal barrier.

BACKGROUND: Few prospective studies exist with an evaluation of a dose-response relationship between use of some photosensitizing antihypertensive medications and skin cancer. PATIENT AND METHODS: We used prospective data from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study to investigate the association between antihypertensive use and risk of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and melanoma in postmenopausal women aged 50-79 years at baseline (n  =  64,918). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used and hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: 8,777 NMSC and 1,227 melanoma cases were observed. Use of antihypertensives (HR [95% CI]: 1.12 [1.07-1.18]), ACE inhibitors (1.09 [1.01-1.18]), calcium channel blockers (1.13 [1.05-1.22]), diuretics (1.20 [1.12-1.27]), loop diuretics (1.17 [1.07-1.28]), and thiazides (1.17 [1.03-1.33]) were each associated with higher NMSC risk. NMSC risk linearly increased with use of multiple antihypertensives (p-trend  =  0.02) and with longer duration of use (p-trend < 0.01). Antihypertensives (1.15 [1.00-1.31]), angiotensin-II receptor blockers (1.82 [1.05-3.15]), and diuretics (1.34 [1.13-1.59]) were each associated with elevated melanoma risk. Effect modification by solar radiation exposure was found between antihypertensive use and incidence of melanoma (p-interaction  =  0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Use of antihypertensives overall, and several individual classes thereof, were associated with higher incidence of NMSC and melanoma with dose-response relationship.

Melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most common skin cancers. The incidence rates of all three types of skin cancers have increased in the past three decades. Light pigmentary traits have been recognized as one of the host risk factors for skin cancer, but findings on associations between eye colors and risk of skin cancers have been inconsistent.We performed a prospective analysis to examine the association between eye colors and risk of skin cancers using the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS). Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate relative risks (RRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Effect modifications due to hair color and skin reaction to sun were also examined.The HPFS included 35,662 males. During a median follow-up of 19 years (1988-2012), 445 melanoma, 1123 SCC, and 7198 BCC cases were documented. Compared to those whose eye colors were dark or brown, participants with hazel/green/medium and blue/light colors had a 24% (RR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.06-1.45) and a 19% (RR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.01-1.41) higher risk of SCC, respectively. Similarly, a higher risk of BCC was observed in participants with hazel/green/medium eye colors (RR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.09-1.23) and blue/light eye colors (RR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.10-1.25). We did not find significant associations between eye color and risk of melanoma. Lighter eye color was associated with increased risks of SCC and BCC among those with dark hair colors (p for interaction ≤ 0.02).In conclusion, in this large prospective study of men, we found that light eye colors were associated with higher risks of SCC and BCC, but not melanoma. Further studies are needed to confirm this association in other populations.

Water footprint (WF) quantifies the impact of paddy field evapotranspiration (ET) and non-point source pollution on water resources and is an evaluation index for water sustainability. However, it is difficult to measure accurately using the existing method, which is based on parameter assumption without considering the field water conditions. In this study, a generic and physically based method for blue, green, and grey water accounting in paddy rice cultivation is introduced. We conducted field experiments using the common flood irrigation (CFI) and water-saving irrigation (SWI) modes in Nanjing, East China. By tracing the sources of ET and the migration process of multiple pollutants (TN, TP, NH4+-N, and NO3--N), the characteristics of blue-green water consumption and the actual amount of water required to dilute pollutants at different growth stages of rice under CFI and SWI were analyzed. The WF of paddy rice was 1000 m3/t (49% WFgreen, 17% WFblue, 34% WFgrey) and 910 m3/t (50% WFgreen, 10% WFblue, 40% WFgrey) for CFI and SWI, respectively. The WF for paddy rice production was reduced by approximately 9% under SWI compared to CFI, with declines of 47% for WFblue and 8% for WFgreen. The SWI mode changed the ratio of blue to green water fluxes in field water by reducing irrigation during non-critical periods, and green water was used preferentially to enhance its utility. This conceptual method is the first to describe the formation mechanism of blue, green, and grey WFs in paddy systems. It can be extended to different scales and agro-ecosystems that show the influence of crop cultivation on water resources.

Physical activity is associated with decreased risk for many cancers. Studies on the association between physical activity and risk of bladder cancer are limited, and findings are inconsistent. Postmenopausal women (mean age = 63.3) were recruited into the Women's Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998. Self-reported baseline information on physical activity and other covariates were available in 141 288 participants. Incident bladder cancer cases were collected through 2018 and centrally adjudicated. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were determined by Cox proportional hazard regression models. Effect modification due to smoking was assessed. During an average of 18.5 years of follow-up, 817 bladder cancer cases were identified. Compared to physically inactive women, those who engaged in ≥15 MET-hours/week of total physical activity, ≥8.75 MET-hours/week of walking or ≥11.25 MET-hours/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity had lower risk of bladder cancer (HR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.59-0.94, P for linear trend = .02; HR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.63-0.98, P for linear trend = .03; and HR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.61-0.94, P for linear trend = .02, respectively). No effect modification was found by smoking status (P for interaction = .06, 0.91 and 0.27, respectively). We found that total physical activity, walking and moderate to vigorous physical activity were inversely associated with bladder cancer incidence among postmenopausal women in a dose-response manner. Physical activity may play a potential role in the primary prevention of bladder cancer. Further studies with objective measurements of physical activity are needed to confirm these findings.

PURPOSE: It has been hypothesized that selenium (Se) can prevent cancer, and that Se deficiency may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. However, findings from epidemiological studies have been inconsistent. The objective of this study was to assess the association between Se intake and risk of breast cancer in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). METHODS: This study included 145,033 postmenopausal women 50-79 years who completed baseline questionnaires between October 1993 and December 1998, which addressed dietary and supplemental Se intake and breast cancer risk factors. The association between baseline Se intake and incident breast cancer was examined in Cox proportional hazards analysis. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 15.5 years, 9487 cases of invasive breast cancer were identified. Total Se (highest versus lowest quartile: HR 1.00, 95% CI 0.92-1.09, Ptrend = 0.66), dietary Se (highest versus lowest quartile: HR 0.99, 95% CI 0.89-1.08, Ptrend = 0.61), and supplemental Se (yes versus no: HR 0.99, 95% CI 0.95-1.03) were not associated with breast cancer incidence. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that Se intake is not associated with incident breast cancer among postmenopausal women in the United States. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings by using biomarkers such as toenail Se to reduce the potential for misclassification of Se status.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on the association between diabetes and risk of bladder cancer has been controversial. In addition, findings on the associations between duration of diabetes, diabetes treatment, and risk of bladder cancer have been inconsistent. METHODS: A total of 148,208 participants in Women's Health Initiative study were included. Information on diabetes status, diabetes duration, and treatment was collected both at baseline and during follow-up. Information on potential confounders including age, race/ethnicity, education, occupation, family history of cancer, smoking status, alcohol consumption, total physical activity, body mass index, and daily dietary intake were collected at baseline. Bladder cancer cases were collected and confirmed by a centralized review of pathology reports. Cox proportional hazard models with time-varying covariates were used to examine associations of diabetes status, duration of diabetes, and diabetes treatment with bladder cancer risk. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 18.5 years, 865 bladder cancer cases were identified. There were no significant associations of diabetes, duration of diabetes, or diabetes treatment with risk of bladder cancer. Participants with prevalent diabetes did not have significantly higher risk of bladder cancer compared with those without diabetes. CONCLUSION: Diabetes was not significantly associated with risk of bladder cancer among postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent of error present in self-reported weight data in the Women's Health Initiative, variables that may be associated with error, and to develop methods to reduce any identified error. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Forty clinical centres in the USA.ParticipantsWomen (n 75 336) participating in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study (WHI-OS) and women (n 6236) participating in the WHI Long Life Study (LLS) with self-reported and measured weight collected about 20 years later (2013-2014). RESULTS: The correlation between self-reported and measured weights was 0·97. On average, women under-reported their weight by about 2 lb (0·91 kg). The discrepancies varied by age, race/ethnicity, education and BMI. Compared with normal-weight women, underweight women over-reported their weight by 3·86 lb (1·75 kg) and obese women under-reported their weight by 4·18 lb (1·90 kg) on average. The higher the degree of excess weight, the greater the under-reporting of weight. Adjusting self-reported weight for an individual's age, race/ethnicity and education yielded an identical average weight to that measured. CONCLUSIONS: Correlations between self-reported and measured weights in the WHI are high. Discrepancies varied by different sociodemographic characteristics, especially an individual's BMI. Correction of self-reported weight for individual characteristics could improve the accuracy of assessment of obesity status in postmenopausal women.

We explored the resource acquisition and growth strategies of plants adapting to different environments, focusing on the typical forest types of Sygera Mountain: Pinus armandii, Picea likiangensis var. Linzhiensis, Abies georgei var. Smithii, and Juniperus saltuaria. Then, we analyzed the nutrient content and stoichiometric ratios of C, N, P, and K in different plant organs (leaves, branches, trunks, and roots) to examine the stoichiometric characteristics and nutrient balance mechanisms in these forests. Results show that within the same forest type, different plant organs exhibit high C and low N, P, and K levels. N content in all organs followed the order leaves > branches > roots > trunks. During the growth phase, the concentrations of P and K in PLL and AGS follow the order branches > leaves > roots > trunks. In the dormant phase, the distribution in different organs had the order leaves > branches > roots > trunks. C content remained relatively stable over time. In the same organ across different forest types, increase in nitrogen content in plant leaves is an active adaptation of JS plants, indicating that JS has a conservative growth strategy and can adapt to environmental stress. Owing to the influence of seasons, the evolution process of N and P content fluctuates, allocating nutrients to supporting and transporting organs for resource optimization and allocation. The N and P content were lower in the growth phase than in the dormant phase. Seasonal variations in the C/N, C/P, and C/K ratios in different forests were inversely correlated with changes in N, P, and K content in plant organs, supporting the "growth rate hypothesis." Stoichiometric analysis suggests that different limiting elements exist in organs across various forest types. Principal component analysis indicates that the seasonal patterns of stoichiometric ratios in the organs of different forest types show species-specific characteristics, reflecting the evolutionary nutrient utilization strategies of plant genera. In summary, plant growth in different Sygera Mountain forest types is limited by N and P, with a high tendency toward nitrogen limitation. The nutrient utilization and distribution differences among various organs during different growth stages are primarily influenced by the limited availability of environmental nutrients and inherent physiological characteristics of the plants.

There is growing interest in the potential health benefits of probiotics for both humans and animals. The study aimed to investigate the effects of feeding the canine-derived probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici GLP06 to adult beagles by analysing the microbiome and metabolome. Twenty-four healthy adult beagles were randomly assigned to four groups. The CK group received a standard diet, while the three probiotic groups, the LG group (2 × 108 CFU/day/dog), MG group (2 × 109 CFU/day/dog), and HG group (2 × 1010 CFU/day/dog), received the standard diet supplemented with varying amounts of probiotics. The results show that, compared to the CK group, total antioxidant capacity was significantly increased in the MG and HG groups (p < 0.05), and superoxide dismutase and catalase were significantly increased in the HG group (p < 0.05). Compared to the CK group, malondialdehyde and blood urea nitrogen content were significantly decreased in the MG and HG groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, secretory immunoglobulin A activity was significantly increased in the HG group compared to the CK and LG groups (p < 0.05), and immunoglobulin G activity was significantly increased in the HG group compared to the CK, LG, and MG groups (p < 0.05). In addition, compared with the CK group, the abundance of Faecalitalea and Collinsella increased in the LG group, and the relative abundance of Tyzzerella and Parasutterella increased in the MG group. The α diversity and the relative abundances of beneficial bacteria (Faecalibacterium, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A1316, and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-005) were higher in the HG group than in the CK group. Furthermore, acetic acid content was significantly increased in the HG group compared to the CK, LG, and MG groups (p < 0.05). Butyric acid, isobutyric acid, and the total SCFA content were significantly increased in the HG group compared to the CK group (p < 0.05). Moreover, metabolome analysis revealed 111 upregulated and 171 downregulated metabolites in the HG group. In conclusion, this study presents evidence that supplementing with P. acidilactici GLP06 can have a positive impact on antioxidant activity, immunoproteins, SCFAs, and gut microbiota in adult beagles. These findings highlight the potential of probiotics as a dietary intervention to enhance gut health and overall wellbeing in companion animals.

In recent years, wastewater treatment to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) has received much attention in water treatment problems. ZIF-67/C3N4 composite adsorbent, a nanosheet structured material stacked with MOFs, was prepared by in situ growth method, which has high adsorption activity for tetracycline hydrochloride in wastewater. Comparing the effect of monomeric and composite adsorbents, Z6C2 had the best adsorption effect (206 mg·g-1), which was 77.6% higher than that of ZIF-67 (116 mg·g-1) and 10.8 times higher than that of C3N4 (19 mg·g-1). The structure of ZIF-67 stacked on C3N4 nanosheets has an excellent specific surface area and number of active sites, as well as π-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonding interactions between the adsorbent and TCH, which combine to enhance the adsorption performance. The adsorption process is accompanied by a combination of chemisorption, mass transport, and internal diffusion rate-limiting. It was shown that the adsorption process is favorable for monolayer adsorption as well as a heat absorption reaction that proceeds spontaneously. The adsorbent exhibits good stability and adsorption capacity, which may be suitable for efficient and low-cost water purification.

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is considered a region vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Studying the effects of climate change on the structure and function of soil microbial communities will provide insight into the carbon cycle under climate change. However, to date, changes in the successional dynamics and stability of microbial communities under the combined effects of climate change (warming or cooling) remain unknown, which limits our ability to predict the consequences of future climate change. In this study, in situ soil columns of an Abies georgei var. smithii forest at 4,300 and 3,500 m elevation in the Sygera Mountains were incubated in pairs for 1 year using the PVC tube method to simulate climate warming and cooling, corresponding to a temperature change of ±4.7°C. Illumina HiSeq sequencing was applied to study alterations in soil bacterial and fungal communities of different soil layers. Results showed that warming did not significantly affect the fungal and bacterial diversity of the 0-10 cm soil layer, but the fungal and bacterial diversity of the 20-30 cm soil layer increased significantly after warming. Warming changed the structure of fungal and bacterial communities in all soil layers (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-30 cm), and the effect increased with the increase of soil layers. Cooling had almost no significant effect on fungal and bacterial diversity in all soil layers. Cooling changed the structure of fungal communities in all soil layers, but it showed no significant effect on the structure of bacterial communities in all soil layers because fungi are more adapted than bacteria to environments with high soil water content (SWC) and low temperatures. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and hierarchical analysis showed that changes in soil bacterial community structure were primarily related to soil physical and chemical properties, whereas changes in soil fungal community structure primarily affected SWC and soil temperature (Soil Temp). The specialization ratio of fungi and bacteria increased with soil depth, and fungi were significantly higher than bacteria, indicating that climate change has a greater impact on microorganisms in deeper soil layers, and fungi are more sensitive to climate change. Furthermore, a warmer climate could create more ecological niches for microbial species to coexist and increase the strength of microbial interactions, whereas a cooler climate could have the opposite effect. However, we found differences in the intensity of microbial interactions in response to climate change in different soil layers. This study provides new insights to understand and predict future effects of climate change on soil microbes in alpine forest ecosystems.

The beneficial effects of lactic acid bacteria are well known and recognized as functional foods that are health benefits for companion animals. This study, for the first time, reports the probiotic properties, safety, and whole-genome sequence of Pediococcus acidilactici GLP06 isolated from feces of beagles. In this study, candidate probiotic bacteria P. acidilactici GLP02 and GLP06 were morphologically characterized and tested for their antimicrobial capacity, tolerance to different conditions (low pH, bile salts, an artificial gastrointestinal model, and high temperature), antibiotic sensitivity, hemolytic activity, cell surface hydrophobicity, autoaggregation activity, and adhesion to Caco-2 cells. P. acidilactici GLP06 showed better probiotic potential. Therefore, P. acidilactici GLP06 was evaluated for in vivo safety in mice and whole-genome sequencing. The results showed, that the supplemented MG06 group (1010 cfu/mL), GLP06 was not only nontoxic to mice, but also promoted the development of the immune system, improved resistance to oxidative stress, and increased the diversity of intestinal microorganisms and the abundance of Lactobacillus. Whole-genome sequencing showed that P. acidilactici GLP06 was 2,014,515 bp and contained 1,976 coding sequences, accounting for 86.12% of the genome, with no drug resistance genes and eight CRISPR sequences. In conclusion, the newly isolated canine-derived P. acidilactici GLP06 had good probiotic potential, was nontoxic to mice and promoted the development of immune organs, improved the biodiversity of the intestinal flora, and had no risk of drug-resistant gene transfer, indicating that P. acidilactici GLP06 can be used as a potential probiotic for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in companion animals.

Probiotics are available from various sources, including the gastrointestinal tract of healthy animals. In this study, Pediococcus acidilactici was isolated for the first time from Felis catus and evaluated for its functionality. The findings revealed that P. acidilactici CLP03 exhibited inhibitory properties against pathogenic bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and L. monocytogenes). Then, survival of strains exposed to pH 2.5, 0.3% bile salts, 0.5% bile salts, and gastrointestinal fluids was 63.97%, 98.84%, 87.95%, and 52.45%, respectively. Also, P. acidilactici CLP03 demonstrated high hydrophobicity (69.63-82.03%) and self-aggregation (73.51-81.44%), negative for hemolytic, and was susceptible to clindamycin. Finally, the scavenging rates of DPPH, ABTS, and O2- were 53.55%, 54.81%, and 85.13%, respectively, which demonstrated that the strain CLP03 has good oxidation resistance. All these characteristics contribute to the survival, colonization, and functionality of the strain in the gastrointestinal tract, indicating their excellent probiotic potential. On the other hand, animal experiments (KM mice, randomly assigned to four groups) showed that the gavage of CLP03 had no toxic effects on mice, increased the serum SOD content, and decreased the MDA and BUN contents, which revealed gavage of CLP03 significantly increased the antioxidant capacity of mice in vivo. In addition, complete genome annotation showed that P. acidilactici CLP03 had 1976 CDS genes, and the numbers of CRISPR, gene islands, and phages were 8, 3, and 6, respectively. In conclusion, P. acidilactici CLP03 could be a candidate functional cat probiotic to enhance animal health and welfare.

A new lignan, sonneralignan A (1), along with two known lignan compounds, (+)-lariciresinol-9-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (2) and (-)isolariciresinol-9-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (3) were isolated from the n-butanol extract of the mangrove Sonneratia apetala fruit. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectral analysis. The evaluation of activity showed that compound 1 exhibited significant anti-aging activity, which extended the mean lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans by up to 19.13% (p < 0.05) and 55.29% (p < 0.01) under normal and heat stress cultivation conditions, respectively. Molecular docking studies showed that compound 1 was bound to the DNA binding domain of DAF-16 and promoted the conformation of DAF-16, thus strengthening the interaction between the DAF-16 and related DNA. TRP-252, SER-250 and SER-249 of the binding region might be the key amino residues during the interaction.

This paper reported a wine-derived lactic acid bacterium, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum XJ25, which exhibited higher cell viability under acid stress upon methionine supplementation. Cellular morphology and the composition of the cytomembrane phospholipids revealed a more solid membrane architecture presented in the acid-stressed cells treated with methionine supplementation. Transcriptional analysis showed L. plantarum XJ25 reduced methionine transport and homocysteine biosynthesis under acid stress. Subsequent overexpression assays proved that methionine supplementation could alleviate the cell toxicity from homocysteine accumulation under acid stress. Finally, L. plantarum XJ25 employed energy allocation strategy to response environmental changes by balancing the uptake methionine and adjusting saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in membrane. These data support a novel mechanism of acid resistance involving methionine utilization and cellular energy distribution in LAB and provide crucial theoretical clues for the mechanisms of acid resistance in other bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that higher selenium intake and consumption of supplements protect against several cancers. To our knowledge, epidemiologic evidence is rare and inconsistent on the association of selenium level and the risk for thyroid cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the association between selenium intake and thyroid cancer risk in postmenopausal women using the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) database. METHODS: The WHI recruited 161 808 postmenopausal women 50 to 79 y of age between September 1, 1993 and December 31, 1998. The present study included 147 348 women 63.15 y of age (SD = 7.21) at baseline. The main exposure was baseline total selenium intake including dietary selenium measured by food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and supplemental selenium. The outcome was thyroid cancer, which was adjudicated by trained physicians. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the association. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 16.4 y until September 30, 2020, 442 thyroid cancer cases were identified. There was no significant association between total selenium intake and thyroid cancer risk after adjusting for multiple covariates (highest versus lowest quartile: hazard ratio [HR], 0.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.60-1.29). Association between total selenium intake and the risk for papillary thyroid cancer was also not significant (highest versus lowest quartile: HR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.66-1.52). CONCLUSIONS: The present data did not support that either total or dietary selenium intake was associated with the risk for thyroid cancer or the papillary subtype in postmenopausal women ages 50 to 79 y in the United States.
