BACKGROUND: Pyroptosis, an inflammatory form of programmed cell death, has been implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of several cancers. However, the significance of pyroptosis-related genes (PRGs) in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) remains unclear. METHODS: Transcriptome and clinical data of PTC patients were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas. The expression patterns of PRGs were identified by consensus clustering. A prognostic model for predicting the thyroid cancer-free interval (TCFi) employed five machine learning methods. Enrichment and immune-related analyses were performed to elucidate the role of pyroptosis. The responses to radioactive iodine (RAI), immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), molecular targeted therapy (MTT), and chemotherapy (CTx) were predicted based on pyroptosis-derived features. Additionally, the expression of prognostic PRGs was validated via six external datasets, 16 cell lines, and 20 pairs of clinical samples. RESULTS: PTC patients were classified into three PyroClusters, C1 exhibited BRFA-like tumors with the highest invasiveness and the worst prognosis, C2 presented RAS-like tumors, and C3 was characterized by gene fusion. Nine PRGs (CXCL8, GJA1, H2BC8, IFI27, PRDM1, PYCARD, SEZ6L2, SIGLEC15, TRAF6) were filtered out to construct a PyroScore prognostic model. A derived nomogram demonstrated superior predictive performance than four clinical staging systems. A strong correlation between pyroptosis and tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) remodeling was observed in mechanistic analyses. Patients with a high PyroScore exhibited "hot" tumor immunophenotypes and had a poorer prognosis but could benefit more from ICIs and CTx (such as paclitaxel). Patients with a low PyroScore were more sensitive to RAI and MTT (such as pazopanib and sorafenib). CONCLUSIONS: PyroScore model can effectively predict TCFi in patients with PTC. Dysregulated expression of PRGs is associated with the TIME modeling. Pyroptosis features have potential significance for developing novel therapeutic strategies for PTC patients.

Phenanthrene (Phe), a typical low-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) of three benzene rings, is one of the most abundant PAHs detected in daily diets. Pregnant women and infants are at great risk of Phe exposure. In the present study, Phe was administered to pregnant mice at a dose of 0, 60, or 600 µg/kg body weight six times, and the F1 male mice showed significant reproductive disorders: the testicular weight and testis somatic index were significantly reduced; the levels of serum testosterone, GnRH and SHBG were increased, while the FSH levels were reduced; histological analysis showed that the amount of Sertoli cells and primary spermatocytes in seminiferous tubules was increased, while the amount of secondary spermatocytes and spermatids were decreased in Phe groups. The protein levels of PCNA and androgen receptor were reduced. Differently expressed genes in the testis screened by RNA sequence were enriched in antioxidant capacity, reproduction et al.. Further biochemical tests confirmed that the antioxidant capacity in the F1 testis was significantly inhibited by treatment with Phe during pregnancy. Those results suggested that gestational Phe exposure disordered hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) hormones on the one hand, and on the other hand reduced testicular antioxidant capacity and further arrested cell cycle in F1 adult male mice, which co-caused the inhibition of spermatogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Despite GC variation constitutes a fundamental element of genome and species diversity, the precise mechanisms driving it remain unclear. The abundant sequence data available for the ITS2, a commonly employed phylogenetic marker in plants, offers an exceptional resource for exploring the GC variation across angiosperms. RESULTS: A comprehensive selection of 8666 species, comprising 165 genera, 63 families, and 30 orders were used for the analyses. The alignment of ITS2 sequence-structures and partitioning of secondary structures into paired and unpaired regions were performed using 4SALE. Substitution rates and frequencies among GC base-pairs in the paired regions of ITS2 were calculated using RNA-specific models in the PHASE package. The results showed that the distribution of ITS2 GC contents on the angiosperm phylogeny was heterogeneous, but their increase was generally associated with ITS2 sequence homogenization, thereby supporting the occurrence of GC-biased gene conversion (gBGC) during the concerted evolution of ITS2. Additionally, the GC content in the paired regions of the ITS2 secondary structure was significantly higher than that of the unpaired regions, indicating the selection of GC for thermodynamic stability. Furthermore, the RNA substitution models demonstrated that base-pair transformations favored both the elevation and fixation of GC in the paired regions, providing further support for gBGC. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the significance of secondary structure in GC investigation, which demonstrate that both gBGC and structure-based selection are influential factors driving angiosperm ITS2 GC content.

INTRODUCTION: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are dysregulated in cancers and are stably expressed in body fluids such as blood. We therefore identified and evaluated the clinical value of a newly found circRNA VPS35L (circVPS35L) as a biomarker for the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: Reverse-transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to determine the expression levels of circVPS35L in tissues, whole blood, and cell lines. The actinomycin D assay and RNase R treatment were utilized to determine the stability of circVPS35L. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to predict the diagnostic value of blood-derived circVPS35L in NSCLC. RESULTS: CircVPS35L was found to be downregulated in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. Interestingly, circVPS35L expression was significantly correlated with tumor size (p = 0.0269), histology type (p < 0.0001), and TNM stage (p = 0.0437). Importantly, circVPS35L was poorly expressed in peripheral blood of NSCLC patients when compared with healthy controls and patients with benign lung disease. ROC analysis revealed a higher diagnostic value of circVPS35L than the three conventional tumor markers (CYFR21-1, NSE, and CEA) in patients with NSCLC. Moreover, circVPS35L was highly stable in peripheral blood when exposed to undesirable conditions. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that circVPS35L has great potential as a novel biomarker for the diagnosis of NSCLC and can be used to distinguish NSCLC from benign lung disease.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Standing up can cause hypotension and tachycardia. Accumulated evidence poses the simple question, does the cardiac baroreflex operate at the onset of standing up? If the cardiac baroreflex is suppressed, what mechanism is responsible for baroreflex inhibition? What is the main finding and its importance? In cats, we found blunting of cardiac baroreflex sensitivity in the pressor range at the onset of voluntary hindlimb standing, but not of passive hindlimb standing. This finding suggests that central command suppresses pressor-evoked bradycardia at the onset of standing up, probably in advance, to prevent or buffer orthostatic hypotension. ABSTRACT: It remains unclear whether cardiac baroreflex function is preserved or suppressed at the onset of standing up. To answer the question and, if cardiac baroreflex is suppressed, to investigate the mechanism responsible for the suppression, we compared the sensitivity of the arterial cardiac baroreflex at the onset of voluntary and passive hindlimb standing in conscious cats. Cardiac baroreflex sensitivity was estimated from the maximal slope of the baroreflex curve between the responses of systolic arterial blood pressure and heart rate to a brief occlusion of the abdominal aorta. The systolic arterial blood pressure response to standing up without aortic occlusion was greater in the voluntary case than in the passive case. Cardiac baroreflex sensitivity was clearly decreased at the onset of voluntary standing up compared with rest (P = 0.005) and the onset of passive standing up (P = 0.007). The cardiac baroreflex sensitivity at the onset of passive standing up was similar to that at rest (P = 0.909). The findings suggest that central command would transmit a modulatory signal to the cardiac baroreflex system during the voluntary initiation of standing up. Furthermore, the present data tempt speculation on a close relationship between central inhibition of the cardiac baroreflex and the centrally induced tachycardiac response to standing up.

Four quinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin (CIP), enrofloxacin (ENR), sparfloxacin (SPA), gatifloxacin (GAT)) and their binary mixtures at environmentally relevant concentrations exhibited time-dependent hormesis on Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 (Q67). The study aims to investigate the time-dependent toxicity of low-dose pollutants and the occurrence of hormesis. These indicators, total protein (TP), reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and luminescence-related chemicals flavin mononucleotide (FMN), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), were measured to explore the mechanism of hormesis. The results showed a trend of increases in all indicators after 12 h of exposure, reaching maximal effects at 60 h and then decreasing as time progressed. At 36 h, 60 h and 84 h, the results showed a gradual increase followed by a decreasing trend in TP, FMN and NADH as the concentration in the group increased, whereas ROS, CAT, SOD and MDA showed the opposite trend. Notably, the degree of changes was related to the magnitude of hormesis. At low concentrations, the content of ROS and MDA decreased, the activity of CAT and SOD was lower, but the content of TP, FMN, NADH gradually increased, positively correlated with the promotion of Q67. At high concentrations, ROS and MDA content in Q67 increased, triggering the antioxidant defense mechanism (CAT and SOD activity increased), but TP, FMN, NADH content decreased, negatively correlated with the inhibited Q67. Therefore, our findings demonstrated two common patterns in these seven biochemical indicators on Q67. These findings have important practical implications for the ecological risk assessment of antibiotics in aquatic environment.

Using wireless multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy, regional difference in cortical activity over the prefrontal cortex (PFC) was examined before and during overground walking and in response to changes in speed and cognitive demand. Oxygenated-hemoglobin concentration (Oxy-Hb) as index of cortical activity in ventrolateral PFC (VLPFC), dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC), and frontopolar cortex (FPC) was measured in 14 subjects, whereas heart rate was measured as estimation of exercise intensity in six subjects. The impact of mental imagery on prefrontal Oxy-Hb was also explored. On both sides, Oxy-Hb in VLPFC, DLPFC, and lateral FPC was increased before the onset of normal-speed walking, whereas Oxy-Hb in medial FPC did not respond before walking onset. During the walking, Oxy-Hb further increased in bilateral VLPFC, whereas Oxy-Hb was decreased in DLPFC and lateral and medial FPC. Increasing walking speed did not alter the increase in Oxy-Hb in VLPFC but counteracted the decrease in Oxy-Hb in DLPFC (but not in lateral and medial FPC). Treadmill running evoked a greater Oxy-Hb increase in DLPFC (n = 5 subjects). Furthermore, increasing cognitive demand during walking, by deprivation of visual feedback, counteracted the decrease in Oxy-Hb in DLPFC and lateral and medial FPC, but it did not affect the increase in Oxy-Hb in VLPFC. Taken together, the profound and localized Oxy-Hb increase is a unique response for the VLPFC. The regional heterogeneity of the prefrontal Oxy-Hb responses to natural overground walking was accentuated by increasing walking speed or cognitive demand, suggesting functional distinction within the PFC.

Although the Chinese government has conducted much work in recent years to reduce land-based pollutant discharge, eutrophication continues to occur frequently in many rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. This may indicate that sediment is a major source rather than a sink for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). To clarify the endogenous mechanisms of eutrophication in coastal river basins, the eutrophication status, physicochemical properties, and bacterial parameters of overlying waters and sediments in the catchment (CA), estuarine (EA), and offshore (OA) areas in the Duliujian River Basin of Bohai Bay were investigated. The results showed that the eutrophication index (EI) of CA, EA, and OA were 62.71, 57.86, and 36.51, respectively. The EI was more sensitive to increases in P (slope = 3.887) than to increases in N (slope = 0.734) of the overlying water, indicating that P is the main factor driving eutrophication in the coastal river basin. However, a nonlinear relationship was found between P in sediments and overlying waters, suggesting that bacterial mediation may occur during P release. As speculated in this study, P in the overlying water increased more quickly than N with increasing bacterial diversity and metabolic abundance, indicating that the allometric release of N and P mediated by bacteria increases the risk of eutrophication. Redundancy analysis showed that organic matter and total N in sediment have positive effects on bacterial communities, which explains 21.8% and 23.7% variation in bacterial diversity, and explains 31.3% and 7.1% variation in bacterial metabolism. This also suggests that the accumulation of N in the sediment promotes the release of P and further aggravates the eutrophication of water. Therefore, simultaneous control of N and P is necessary to control water eutrophication in coastal river basins.

Epidemiological investigations and animal studies demonstrate a significantly positive relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure and reproductive disorders. However, few researches are focused on the reproductive toxicity of low-molecular-weight PAHs (number of benzene ring ≤ 3) which occupy a large part of PAHs. Phenanthrene (Phe), a typical low-molecular-weight PAH, is one of the most abundant PAHs detected in foods. In the present study, oral treatment with Phe at a human exposure related level during gestation (60 µg/kg body weight every three days, six times in total) induced reproductive disorders in F1 adult female mice: the number of antral follicles (an immature stage of follicular development) were significantly increased, while the maturation of oocytes was inhibited and aggravated follicular atresia was observed; the serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and estradiol were significantly reduced; the receptor of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSHR) and aromatase in the ovary were significantly upregulated; transcriptome analysis demonstrated that the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signal pathway was upregulated, and the calcium signal pathway was disturbed, which probably accounts for the exacerbated atresia of the growing follicles and the excessive consumption of follicles. The reproductive toxicity of low-molecular-weight PAHs could not be neglected.

Recently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the related social distancing measures, in-person activities have been significantly reduced to limit the spread of the virus, especially in healthcare settings. This has led to loneliness and social isolation for our most vulnerable populations. Socially assistive robots can play a crucial role in minimizing these negative affects. Namely, socially assistive robots can provide assistance with activities of daily living, and through cognitive and physical stimulation. The ongoing pandemic has also accelerated the exploration of remote presence ranging from workplaces to home and healthcare environments. Human-robot interaction (HRI) researchers have also explored the use of remote HRI to provide cognitive assistance in healthcare settings. Existing in-person and remote comparison studies have investigated the feasibility of these types of HRI on individual scenarios and tasks. However, no consensus on the specific differences between in-person HRI and remote HRI has been determined. Furthermore, to date, the exact outcomes for in-person HRI versus remote HRI both with a physical socially assistive robot have not been extensively compared and their influence on physical embodiment in remote conditions has not been addressed. In this paper, we investigate and compare in-person HRI versus remote HRI for robots that assist people with activities of daily living and cognitive interventions. We present the first comprehensive investigation and meta-analysis of these two types of robotic presence to determine how they influence HRI outcomes and impact user tasks. In particular, we address research questions regarding experience, perceptions and attitudes, and the efficacy of both humanoid and non-humanoid socially assistive robots with different populations and interaction modes. The use of remote HRI to provide assistance with daily activities and interventions is a promising emerging field for healthcare applications.

OBJECTIVE: Poor oral health is common in dementia, but findings of epidemiological studies have been inconsistent. This meta-analysis examined oral health in patients with dementia diagnosed according to standardized diagnostic criteria. METHODS: Six international databases (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Medline, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) were searched from their commencement date until 8 November 2018. Oral health was measured by the Remaining Teeth (RT) and Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) Index. The mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of DMFT Index total and component scores were calculated using a random-effect model. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies were included for analyses. The pooled DMFT Index was 23.48 (95% CI: 22.34, 24.62), while the pooled score for each component was 2.38 (95% CI: 1.56, 3.20) in decayed teeth (DT), 18.39 (95% CI: 15.92, 20.87) in missing teeth (MT), 2.29 (95% CI: 0.62, 3.95) in filled teeth (FT), and 11.59 (95% CI: 9.14, 14.05) in RT. Compared to controls, people with dementia had significantly a higher DMFT Index total score (MD = 3.80, 95% CI: 2.21, 5.39, p < 0.00,001), and significantly lower number of RT (MD = -3.15, 95% CI: -4.23, -2.06, p < 0.00,001). Subgroup analyses revealed that higher DMFT Index score was significantly associated with year of survey (>2010), study design (case-control study), percentage of females (≤54.3), and the Mini Mental State Examination score (≤18.2). Higher MT score was significantly associated with study design (cross-sectional study), and lower FT score was significantly associated with year of survey (>2010). CONCLUSIONS: Oral health was significantly poorer in people with dementia compared with controls. Regular screening and effective treatment should be implemented for this population.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this report was to summarize observations, evaluate the feasibility, provide detailed information concerning proper techniques, and address limitations for non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) dissection and release during the robotic bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA) for thyroidectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The BABA approach was used in two cases of thyroidectomy in the setting of NRLN. Preoperative CT imaging findings suggesting the aberrant anatomy are reviewed and technical planning, inclusive of intraoperative nerve monitoring, was employed. Intraoperative videos with narrative discussion of technique for safe dissection are provided, along with supplementary video of additional technical guidance. RESULTS: In both cases, the NRLNs were identified, dissected, and preserved. We dissected the proximal segment of each NRLN to its origin. We determined that the use of only the NRLN proximal to distal robotic dissection jeopardized the nerve. The BABA approach with the Type I NRLN is similar to the dissection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) in transoral thyroidectomy. Due to interference with endoscopic viewing caused by the thyroid cartilage, the Type I NRLN is more challenging to manage both at the laryngeal entry point and its origin from the vagus nerve (VN). For the Type II NRLN, it is essential to identify its point of origin and the reflection of the nerve from the VN. Therefore, modification of nerve dissection to mirror open surgery with bidirectional nerve dissection assisted in avoidance of traction injury to the nerve. CONCLUSIONS: We presented a video, a detailed description of methods, and discussed limits for NRLN management in robotic BABA. This report included (i) a description of the aberrant anatomy and CT scans to inform surgeons of the possible NRLN locations, (ii) a description of a technique for using the nerve monitor in the robotic surgeries, and (iii) a description of the techniques used to isolate and protect the NRLN during the robotic surgery. In robotic BABA, our NRLN-sparing technique and degree included mainly a multi-directional nerve dissection (i.e., medial-grade, later-grade approach together with proximal to/from distal) using athermal technique. The NRLN-sparing technique is predominantly carried out in an anterior dissection plane.

PURPOSE: The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) has emerged as a new treatment option for patients with selected thyroid disease requiring surgery. The aim of this pictorial essay is to illustrate the healing outcomes of the vestibular incisions. METHODS: TOETVA patients were recruited at two Centers in China and Italy. TOETVA is initiated with one 10-20-mm median incision in the center of the oral vestibule 10 mm above the inferior labial frenulum, and two 5-mm lateral incisions, just below the lower lip near the labial commissure. Healing of the vestibular incision was monitored through serial photographs 1, 3, 7, 30, and 90 days after surgery. Outcomes were evaluated by Landry's score, time to healing, issues affecting wound outcomes, scar, fibrin, granulation, necrotic tissue formation, and infections. RESULTS: Results of TOETVA were monitored in 52 patients. There were no postoperative infections. All lateral incisions demonstrated favorable surgical outcomes. Landry's criteria scores indicated worse outcomes for the median incisions vs. the lateral ones (p<0.05). Median incisions healed well in 65.4% of patients, but 34.6% of patients had visible scars from the median incision 90 days after surgery. Eight (15.4%) had cicatricial diathesis, seven (13.5%) experienced displacement of the stitches, and three (5.8%) developed synechia with gingiva. When the central vestibular incision was <10mm from the gingiva, patients tended to form synechia (60%). There were no significant differences in wound healing between the Chinese and Italian patients. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of vestibular incision healing is essential to provide practical TOETVA clinical guide and to define optimal outcomes evaluation for transoral surgeons. Vestibular wound problems were confined only to the central incision.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as key regulators of multiple essential biological processes involved in physiology and pathology. By analyzing the largest compendium of 14,166 samples from normal and tumor tissues, we significantly expand the landscape of human long noncoding RNA with a high-quality atlas: RefLnc (Reference catalog of LncRNA). Powered by comprehensive annotation across multiple sources, RefLnc helps to pinpoint 275 novel intergenic lncRNAs correlated with sex, age or race as well as 369 novel ones associated with patient survival, clinical stage, tumor metastasis or recurrence. Integrated in a user-friendly online portal, the expanded catalog of human lncRNAs provides a valuable resource for investigating lncRNA function in both human biology and cancer development.

This study examined the prevalence of burnout and its association with quality of life (QOL) among psychiatric nurses in China.Ten psychiatric hospitals were included. Burnout and QOL were measured using standardized instruments. Altogether, 1449 nurses completed the assessment. The mean scores of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and personal accomplishment (PA) were 11.87 (SD = 6.72), 6.98 (SD = 5.71) and 22.06 (SD = 8.67), respectively. Of the participants, 59.8% (95% CI: 57-62%) experienced burnout; with 23.3% (95% CI: 21-25%) in EE, 14.6% (95% CI: 13-16%) in DP and 45.1% (95% CI: 43-48%) in PA. Psychiatric nurses who reported burnout had lower QOL in social (F (1, 1448) = 86.20, P < 0.001), physical (F (1, 1448) = 170.46, P < 0.001), psychological (F (1, 1448) = 205.63, P < 0.001), and environmental (F (1, 1448) = 120.24, P < 0.001) domains. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that alcohol users (P = 0.04; OR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.01-1.64 in model 1 and P = 0.03; OR = 1.32, 95%CI: 1.04-1.69 in model 2) were significantly more susceptible to burnout, while senior nurses (P = 0.007; OR = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.53-0.91) and nurses with longer work experience (P = 0.02; OR = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.53-0.91) were less likely to develop burnout. Burnout is common in psychiatric nurses in China. In light of its negative impact on health and QOL, there is an urgent need for regular screening as well as effective preventive measures and interventions to reduce burnout within this at-risk occupational group.

Objective: Poor sleep quality is common in nursing staff. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality in nursing staff. Methods: A systematic search in PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases was performed. Studies that reported sleep quality measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were synthesized using a random-effects model. Results: Fifty-three studies were analyzed. The pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality was 61.0% (95% CI: 55.8-66.1%). The pooled total PSQI score was 7.13 ± 0.18 (95% CI: 6.78-7.50). The pooled component scores were 1.47 ± 0.20 (95% CI of mean score: 1.08-1.85) in sleep latency, 0.91 ± 0.15 (95% CI of mean score: 0.61-1.21) in sleep duration, 1.59 ± 0.13 (95% CI of mean score: 1.35-1.84) in overall sleep disturbances, 0.33 ± 0.18 (95% CI of mean score: 0-0.67) in sleeping medication, 1.21 ± 1.20 (95% CI of mean score: 0.83-1.60) in daytime dysfunction, 1.39 ± 0.14 (95% CI of mean score: 1.11-1.67) in subjective sleep quality, and 0.66 ± 0.11 (95% CI of mean score: 0.44-0.87) in habitual sleep efficiency. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses found that PSQI cutoff values, mean age, body mass index (BMI), sample size, study quality, and work experience moderated the prevalence of poor sleep quality. Conclusions: Poor sleep quality appears to be common in nursing staff. Considering its negative impact on health, effective measures should be taken to improve poor sleep quality in this population. Longitudinal studies should be conducted to examine the contributing factors of nurses' poor sleep quality.

Neurological diseases severely affect the quality of life of patients. Although existing treatments including rehabilitative therapy aim to facilitate the recovery of motor function, achieving complete recovery remains a challenge. In recent years, regenerative therapy has been considered as a potential candidate that could yield complete functional recovery. However, to achieve desirable results, integration of transplanted cells into neural networks and generation of appropriate microenvironments are essential. Furthermore, considering the nascent state of research in this area, we must understand certain aspects about regenerative therapy, including specific effects, nature of interaction when administered in combination with rehabilitative therapy (regenerative rehabilitation), and optimal conditions. Herein, we review the current status of research in the field of regenerative therapy, discuss the findings that could hold the key to resolving the challenges associated with regenerative rehabilitation, and outline the challenges to be addressed with future studies. The current state of research emphasizes the importance of determining the independent effect of regenerative and rehabilitative therapies before exploring their combined effects. Furthermore, the current review highlights the progression in the treatment perspective from a state of compensation of lost function to that of a possibility of complete functional recovery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the prevalence of sexual harassment (SH) toward Chinese psychiatric nurses and its association with quality of life (QOL). METHODS: A total of 2124 psychiatric nurses were consecutively recruited from 10 psychiatric hospitals distributed across 10 provinces of China; of them, 1,449 were included for analyses. Participants' socio-demographic characteristics, experiences of workplace SH in the past year, and QOL were recorded. RESULTS: Overall, 21.5% (n = 311) of participants reported SH, with 8.4% (n = 121) reporting once, 7.1% (n = 103) reporting twice and 6.0% (n = 87) reporting three times or more. Psychiatric nurses who experienced SH had lower QOL in physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains. Multiple logistic regression analysis found that nurses with shorter clinical experience were more likely to experience SH. CONCLUSIONS: Workplace SH toward psychiatric nurses is common in mental health treatment settings in China. Considering its deleterious impact on nurses' well-being and care quality, effective staff training on the management of SH and a zero tolerance policy against SH should be developed for this population.

OBJECTIVE: Burnout is common in mental health nurses because of work-related stress. Burnout has a negative impact on nurses' health and work performance. The prevalence of high burnout in mental health nurses has been inconclusive across studies. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of high burnout in mental health nurses in China. METHODS: Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CNKI, WanFang and SinoMed) were independently and systematically searched from their commencement date up to 14 May 2018. Studies that reported the prevalence of any of the 3 burnout dimensions (high Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and low Personal Accomplishment (PA)) as measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were included and analyzed using the random-effects model. RESULTS: A total of 19 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of high EE was 28.1% (95% CI: 20.4-35.8%), DP was 25.4% (18.1-32.6%) and low PA was 39.7% (28.3-51.1%). Subgroup analyses found that short working experience, use of MBI-Human Services Survey (HSS), and younger age had moderating effects on prevalence of high burnout. CONCLUSIONS: Burnout is common in mental health nurses in China. Considering its negative impact on health and work performance, regular screening, preventive measures and effective interventions should be implemented.

This is a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) monotherapy with active control treatment for insomnia in patients with medical or psychiatric comorbidities. Both international (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library) and Chinese (WanFang, and CNKI) databases were systematically searched. The random effects model was used. Thirteen RCTs comparing CBT-I (n = 441) and active controls (n = 412) groups were included. CBT-I group showed significant advantage over active controls at post-treatment assessment in terms of Insomnia Severity Index (ISI; SMD = -0.74), sleep onset latency (SMD = -0.36), wake after sleep onset (SMD = -0.21), sleep quality (SMD = 0.56), Pittsburgh sleep quality index total scores (PSQI; SMD = -0.76) and the total score of dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep scale (DBAS; SMD = -1.09). Subgroup analyses revealed significant improvement in sleep onset latency in patients with psychiatric disorders (SMD = -0.45), while significant reduction of number of wakeup after sleep onset was found in patients with medical conditions (SMD = -0.31). This meta-analysis found that CBT-I monotherapy had greater efficacy than other active control treatment for insomnia in patients with medical or psychiatric comorbidities.
