RESUMO

Bismuth-based chalcogenides have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation, solution-processable semiconductors, mainly benefiting from their facile fabrication, low cost, excellent stability, and tunable optoelectronic properties. Particularly, the recently developed AgBiS2 solar cells have shown striking power conversion efficiencies. High performance bismuth-based photodetectors have also been extensively studied in the past few years. However, the fundamental properties of these Bi-based semiconductors have not been sufficiently investigated, which is crucial for further improving the device performance. Here, we introduce multiple time-resolved and steady-state techniques to fully characterize the charge carrier dynamics and charge transport of solution-processed Bi-based nanocrystals. It was found that the Ag-Bi ratio plays a critical role in charge transport. For Ag-deficient samples, silver bismuth sulfide thin films behave as localized state induced hopping charge transport, and the Ag-excess samples present band-like charge transport. This finding is crucial for developing more efficient Bi-based semiconductors and optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Recently, metal 1halide perovskites have shown compelling optoelectronic properties for both light-emitting devices and scintillation of ionizing radiation. However, conventional lead-based metal halide perovskites are still suffering from poor material stability and relatively low X-ray light yield. This work reports cadmium-based all-inorganic metal halides and systematically investigates the influence of the metal ion incorporation on the optoelectronic properties. This work introduces the bi-metal ion incorporation strategy and successfully enhances the photoluminescence quantum yield (98.9%), improves thermal stability, and extends the photoluminescence spectra, which show great potential for white light emission. In addition, the photoluminescent decay is also modulated with single metal ion incorporation, the charge carrier lifetime is successfully reduced to less than 1 µs, and the high luminescent efficiency and X-ray light yield (41 000 photons MeV-1 ) are maintained. Then, these fast scintillators are demonstrated for high-speed light communication and sensitive X-ray detection and imaging.

RESUMO

Antimony-based chalcogenides have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation thin film photovoltaics. Particularly, binary Sb2 S3 thin films have exhibited great potential for optoelectronic applications, due to the facile and low-cost fabrication, simple composition, decent charge transport and superior stability. However, most of the reported efficient Sb2 S3 solar cells are realized based on chemical bath deposition and hydrothermal methods, which require large amount of solution and are normally very time-consuming. In this work, Ag ions are introduced within the Sb2 S3 sol-gel precursors, and effectively modulated the crystallization and charge transport properties of Sb2 S3 . The crystallinity of the Sb2 S3 crystal grains are enhanced and the charge carrier mobility is increased, which resulted improved charge collection efficiency and reduced charge recombination losses, reflected by the greatly improved fill factor and open-circuit voltage of the Ag incorporated Sb2 S3 solar cells. The champion devices reached a record high power conversion efficiency of 7.73% (with antireflection coating), which is comparable with the best photovoltaic performance of Sb2 S3 solar cells achieved based on chemical bath deposition and hydrothermal techniques, and pave the great avenue for next-generation solution-processed photovoltaics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer (BC) is among the most prevalent malignant urothelial tumors globally, yet the prognosis for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) remains dismal, with a very poor 5-year survival rate. Consequently, identifying more effective and less toxic chemotherapeutic alternatives is critical for enhancing clinical outcomes for BC patients. Isorhapontigenin (ISO), a novel stilbene isolated from a Gnetum found in certain provinces of China, has shown potential as an anticancer agent due to its diverse anticancer activities. Despite its promising profile, the specific anticancer effects of ISO on BC and the underlying mechanisms are still largely unexplored. METHODS: The anchorage-independent growth, migration and invasion of BC cells were assessed by soft agar and transwell invasion assays, respectively. The RNA levels of SOX2, miR-129 and SNHG1 were quantified by qRT-PCR, while the protein expression levels were validated through Western blotting. Furthermore, methylation-specific PCR was employed to assess the methylation status of the miR-129 promoter. Functional assays utilized siRNA knockdown, plasmid-mediated overexpression, and chemical inhibition approaches. RESULTS: Our study demonstrated that ISO treatment significantly reduced SNHG1 expression in a dose- and time-dependent manner in BC cells, leading to the inhibition of anchorage-independent growth and invasion in human basal MIBC cells. This effect was accompanied by the downregulation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and the upregulation of the tumor suppressor PTEN. Further mechanistic investigations revealed that SOX2, a key upstream regulator of SNHG1, played a crucial role in mediating the ISO-induced transcriptional suppression of SNHG1. Additionally, we found that ISO treatment led to a decrease in DNMT3b protein levels, which in turn mediated the hypomethylation of the miR-129 promoter and the subsequent suppression of SOX2 mRNA 3'-UTR activity, highlighting a novel pathway through which ISO exerts its anticancer effects. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our study highlights the critical role of SNHG1 downregulation as well as its upstream DNMT3b/miR-129/SOX2 axis in mediating ISO anticancer activity. These findings not only elucidate the mechanism of action of ISO but also suggest novel targets for BC therapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parent artery atherosclerosis is an important aetiology of recent subcortical ischaemic stroke (RSIS). However, comparisons of RSIS with different degrees of parent artery atherosclerosis are lacking. METHODS: Prospectively collected data from our multicentre cohort (all were tertiary centres) of the Stroke Imaging Package Study between 2015 and 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients with RSIS defined as a single clinically relevant diffusion-weighted imaging positive lesion in the territory of lenticulostriate arteries were categorized into three subgroups: (1) normal middle cerebral artery (MCA) on magnetic resonance angiography and high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI); (2) low-grade MCA atherosclerosis (normal or <50% stenosis on magnetic resonance angiography and with MCA plaques on HR-MRI); (3) steno-occlusive MCA atherosclerosis (stenosis ≥50% or occlusion). The primary outcome was 90-day functional dependence (modified Rankin Scale score >2). The clinical and imaging findings were compared between subgroups. RESULTS: A total of 239 patients (median age 60.0 [52.0-67.0] years, 72% male) were enrolled, including 140 with normal MCA, 64 with low-grade MCA atherosclerosis and 35 with steno-occlusive MCA atherosclerosis. Patients with steno-occlusive MCA atherosclerosis had the largest infarct volume. Low-grade MCA atherosclerosis was independently associated with cerebral microbleeding, more severe perivascular spaces in basal ganglia and higher total cerebral small vessel disease burden. Low-grade MCA atherosclerosis was an independent determinant of 90-day functional dependence (odds ratio 3.897; 95% confidence interval 1.309-11.604). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested RSIS with varying severity of parent artery atherosclerosis exhibits distinctive clinical and neuroimaging characteristics, with low-grade MCA atherosclerosis associating with higher cerebral small vessel disease burden and worse prognosis.

RESUMO

Organic scintillators have recently attracted growing attention for X-ray detection in industrial and medical applications. However, these materials still face critical obstacles of low attenuation efficiency and/or inefficient triplet exciton utilization. Here we developed a new category of organogold(III) complexes, Tp-Au-1 and Tp-Au-2, through adopting a through-space interaction motif to realize high X-ray attenuation efficiency and efficient harvesting of triplet excitons for emission. Thanks to the efficient through-space charge transfer process, this panel of complexes achieved higher photoluminescence quantum yield and shorter radiative lifetimes compared with the through-bond reference complexes. Inspiringly, these organogold(III) complexes exhibited polarity-dependent emission origins: thermally activated delayed fluorescence and/or phosphorescence. Under X-ray irradiation, Tp-Au-2 manifested intense radioluminescence together with a record-high scintillation light yield of 77,600 photons MeV-1 for organic scintillators. The resulting scintillator screens demonstrated high-quality X-ray imaging with >16.0 line pairs mm-1 spatial resolution, outstripping most organic and inorganic scintillators. This finding provides a feasible strategy for the design of superior organic X-ray scintillators.

RESUMO

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters featuring through-space charge transfer (TSCT) can be excellent candidates for piezochromic luminescent (PCL) materials due to their structural dynamics. Spatial donor-acceptor (D-A) stacking arrangements enable the modulation of inter- and intramolecular D-A interactions, as well as spatial charge transfer states, under varying pressure conditions. Herein, we demonstrate an effective approach toward dynamic reversible full-color PCL materials with TSCT-TADF characteristics. Their single crystals exhibit a full-color-gamut PCL process spanning a range of 170 nm. Moreover, the TSCT-TADF-PCL emitters display a unity photoluminescence quantum yield, and show promising application in X-ray scintillator imaging.

RESUMO

Inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite single crystals are particularly intriguing to ionizing radiation detection by virtue of their material stability and high attenuation coefficients. However, the growth of high-quality inorganic perovskite single crystals remains challenging, mainly due to the limited solubility. In this work, an additive-enhanced crystallization method is proposed for cesium lead perovskites. The additive can remarkably increase the solubility of cesium bromide in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) forming a balanced stoichiometric precursor solution, which prevents the formation of impurity phases. In addition, the additives would react with DMSO generating glyoxylic acid (GLA) via nucleophilic substitution and Kornblum oxidation reactions. The GLA can form stable PbBr2 -DMSO-GLA complexes, which enables better crystallinity, uniformity and much longer carrier lifetimes for the grown single crystals. The X-ray detectors using the additive-enhanced crystals exhibit an ultra-high sensitivity of 3.0 × 104  µC Gyair -1 cm-2 which is more than two orders of magnitude higher than that for the control devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The development of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) has enabled submillimeter-level evaluation of intracranial artery plaque and luminal thrombus. We sought to investigate the value of HR-MRI in assessing the pathogenesis of acute intracranial artery thrombus. METHODS: We examined the presence of intracranial thrombus on three-dimensional T1-weighted HR-MRI in acute ischemic stroke patients with intracranial artery occlusion on magnetic resonance angiography. We defined two thrombus-related HR-MRI features (peri-thrombus plaque and distal residual flow beyond the thrombus) and analyzed their association with potential embolic sources. RESULTS: Luminal thrombus and a shrunken artery without luminal thrombus were detected in 162 (96.4%) and six (3.6%) of 168 patients with intracranial artery occlusion, respectively. Among 111 patients with culprit major artery thrombus, peri-thrombus plaques were observed in 46.8% and distal residual flow beyond the thrombus in 64.0%. Patients with peri-thrombus plaque had a higher prevalence of diabetes (44.2% vs. 25.4%; p = 0.037), a lower prevalence of potential sources of cardioembolism (0% vs. 16.9%; p = 0.002), and a nonsignificantly lower prevalence of potential embolic sources from extracranial arteries (9.6% vs. 20.3%; p = 0.186) than those without. Patients with distal residual flow beyond the thrombus had a lower prevalence of potential sources of cardioembolism (1.4% vs. 22.5%; p < 0.001) and smaller infarct volumes (5.0 [1.4-12.7] mL vs. 16.6 [2.4-94.6] mL; p = 0.012) than those without. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that HR-MRI helps clarify the pathogenesis of acute intracranial artery thrombus. The presence of peri-thrombus plaque and distal residual flow beyond the thrombus favor the stroke mechanism of atherosclerosis rather than cardioembolism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study explored the feasibility of using EEG gamma-band (30-49 Hz) power as an index of cue-elicited craving in METH-dependent individuals. METHODS: Twenty-nine participants dependent on methamphetamine (METH) and 30 healthy participants were instructed to experience a METH-related virtual reality (VR) social environment. RESULTS: Individuals with METH dependence showed significantly stronger self-reported craving and higher gamma power in a VR environment than healthy individuals. In the METH group, the VR environment elicited a significant increase in gamma power compared with the resting state. The METH group then received a VR counterconditioning procedure (VRCP), which was deemed useful in suppressing cue-induced reactivity. After VRCP, participants showed significantly lower self-reported craving scores and gamma power when exposed to drug-related cues than the first time. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the EEG gamma-band power may be a marker of cue-induced reactivity in patients with METH dependence.

RESUMO

Low band gap tin-lead perovskite solar cells (Sn-Pb PSCs) are expected to achieve higher efficiencies than Pb-PSCs and regarded as key components of tandem PSCs. However, the realization of high efficiency is challenged by the instability of Sn2+ and the imperfections at the charge transfer interfaces. Here, we demonstrate an efficient ideal band gap formamidinium (FA)-based Sn-Pb (FAPb0.5 Sn0.5 I3 ) PSC, by manipulating the buried NiOx /perovskite interface with 4-hydroxyphenethyl ammonium halide (OH-PEAX, X=Cl- , Br- , or I- ) interlayer, which exhibits fascinating functions of reducing the surface defects of the NiOx hole transport layer (HTL), enhancing the perovskite film quality, and improving both the energy level matching and physical contact at the interface. The effects of different halide anions have been elaborated and a 20.53 % efficiency is obtained with OH-PEABr, which is the highest one for FA-based Sn-Pb PSCs using NiOx HTLs. Moreover, the device stability is also boosted.

RESUMO

Indoor photovoltaics have attracted increasing attention, since they can provide sustainable energy through the recycling of photon energy from household dim lighting. However, solar cells exhibiting high performance under sunlight may not perform well under indoor light conditions, mainly due to the mismatch of the irradiance spectrum. In particular, most of the indoor light sources emit visible photons with negligible near-infrared irradiance. According to the detailed balance theory, the optimal bandgap for indoor photovoltaics should be relatively larger, considering the trade-off between photocurrent and photovoltage losses. In this work, a systematic comparison of the theoretical limits of the conventional and indoor photovoltaics is presented. Then the non-radiative recombination losses are reduced by a synergetic treatment with Pb(SCN)2 and PEABr, resulting relatively high open circuit voltage of 1.29 V and power conversion efficiency of 17.32% under 1 sun illumination. Furthermore, the devices are fully characterized under weak indoor light (1000 lux, 4000 K LED) achieving a high efficiency of 37.18%, which is promising for real applications.

RESUMO

Using machine learning to predict the intensity of pain from fMRI has attracted rapidly increasing interests. However, due to remarkable inter- and intra-individual variabilities in pain responses, the performance of existing fMRI-based pain prediction models is far from satisfactory. The present study proposed a new approach which can design a prediction model specific to each individual or each experimental trial so that the specific model can achieve more accurate prediction of the intensity of nociceptive pain from single-trial fMRI responses. More precisely, the new approach uses a supervised k-means method on nociceptive-evoked fMRI responses to cluster individuals or trials into a set of subgroups, each of which has similar and consistent fMRI activation patterns. Then, for a new test individual/trial, the proposed approach chooses one subgroup of individuals/trials, which has the closest fMRI patterns to the test individual/trial, as training samples to train an individual-specific or a trial-specific pain prediction model. The new approach was tested on a nociceptive-evoked fMRI dataset and achieved significantly higher prediction accuracy than conventional non-specific models, which used all available training samples to train a model. The generalizability of the proposed approach is further validated by training specific models on one dataset and testing these models on an independent new dataset. This proposed individual-specific and trial-specific pain prediction approach has the potential to be used for the development of individualized and precise pain assessment tools in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-oil is a crucial step for improving the bio-fuel quality, but developing highly dispersed Pt-based catalysts with high selectivity for target alkanes remains a great challenge. This study presents a fast surfactant-free method to prepare the MoS2-supported Pt catalyst for HDO. Ultrafine Pt nanoparticles with sizes of <5 nm can be readily grown on chemically exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) via the direct microwave-assisted thermal reduction. The obtained Pt NPs/MoS2 composites show excellent catalytic performance in the conversion of palmitic acid, and the best selectivity (also the yield) of hexadecane and pentadecane is 80.56 and 19.43%, respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To study the feasibility and clinical utility of head-neck joint high-resolution vessel wall imaging (HNJ-VWI) in the assessment of ischemic stroke. METHODS: We reviewed our institutional HNJ-VWI database. Patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or ischemic stroke were included. Abnormal findings of intracranial and/or extracranial artery were assessed on three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (3D TOF MRA) and HNJ-VWI modified from high-resolution 3D T1 sequence and classified into three groups including intracranial, extracranial and coexisting based on the locations. Etiologies of stroke were recorded according to Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment criteria. RESULTS: One hundred and ten consecutive patients were studied. 3D TOF MRA displayed 71.8% (79/110, based on patients) abnormal arteries (stenosis or occlusion) , while HNJ-VWI displayed 96.3% (106/110) abnormal arteries (plaque, wall thickness and occlusion) including four isolated extracranial lesions and ten coexisting lesions. The etiologies of TIA/ischemic stroke included large artery atherosclerosis (80 cases), cerebral small vessel disease (6 cases), cardiogenic (2 cases), dissection (6 cases), vasculitis (4 cases), moyamoya disease (6 cases), others (2 cases) and undetermined (4 cases). For patients with atherosclerosis stroke, re-infarctions were more common in coexisting group than intracranial group (extracranial vs. intracranial vs coexisting: 0% vs. 9.1% vs. 43.7%, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: HNJ-VWI is a feasible and valuable technique in assessment of ischemic stroke by detecting extracranial and intracranial artery abnormalities with one-step scan.

RESUMO

Lead-based organohalide perovskites have recently emerged as arguably the most promising of all next generation thin film solar cell technologies. Power conversion efficiencies have reached 20% in less than 5 years, and their application to other optoelectronic device platforms such as photodetectors and light emitting diodes is being increasingly reported. Organohalide perovskites can be solution processed or evaporated at low temperatures to form simple thin film photojunctions, thus delivering the potential for the holy grail of high efficiency, low embedded energy, and low cost photovoltaics. The initial device-driven "perovskite fever" has more recently given way to efforts to better understand how these materials work in solar cells, and deeper elucidation of their structure-property relationships. In this Account, we focus on this element of organohalide perovskite chemistry and physics in particular examining critical electro-optical, morphological, and architectural phenomena. We first examine basic crystal and chemical structure, and how this impacts important solar-cell related properties such as the optical gap. We then turn to deeper electronic phenomena such as carrier mobilities, trap densities, and recombination dynamics, as well as examining ionic and dielectric properties and how these two types of physics impact each other. The issue of whether organohalide perovskites are predominantly nonexcitonic at room temperature is currently a matter of some debate, and we summarize the evidence for what appears to be the emerging field consensus: an exciton binding energy of order 10 meV. Having discussed the important basic chemistry and physics we turn to more device-related considerations including processing, morphology, architecture, thin film electro-optics and interfacial energetics. These phenomena directly impact solar cell performance parameters such as open circuit voltage, short circuit current density, internal and external quantum efficiency, fill factor, and ultimately the all-important power conversion efficiency. Finally, we address the key challenges pertinent to actually delivering a new and viable solar cell technology. These include long-term cell stability, scaling to the module level, and the toxicity associated with lead. Organohalide perovskites not only offer exciting possibilities for next generation optoelectronics and photovoltaics, but are an intriguing class of material crossing the boundaries of molecular solids and banded inorganic semiconductors. This is a potential area of rich new chemistry, materials science, and physics.

RESUMO

Chalcogenide semiconductors have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation optoelectronics, mainly benefiting from their cost-effective processability, chemical versatility, and excellent stability. However, the device performance is limited by the complex defect characteristics, necessitating a detailed understanding of the defect density, types, and distribution. This study employs optical injection deep level transient spectroscopy to characterize the trap features of antimony bismuth sulfide-based heterojunctions. Photoexcitation offers the possibility to determine the spatial distribution of traps. It reveals distinct distributions of hole and electron traps. Short-wavelength light (570 nm) detects hole traps near the hole transport layer, while long-wavelength light (830 nm) identifies electron traps near the electron transport layer. Additional intermediate-wavelength tests (670 and 755 nm) and light field distribution simulation further elucidate the trap distribution. Transient absorption and transient photocurrent also support the non-uniform trap distribution within the chalcogenide-based photodiodes.

RESUMO

The noble-metal-free surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have gained significant attention due to their abundant sources, signal uniformity, biocompatibility, and chemical stability. However, the lack of controllable synthesis and fabrication methods for high-SERS-activity noble-metal-free substrates hinders their practical applications. In this study, we demonstrate the use of a femtosecond laser direct writing technique to precisely manipulate and modify microstructures, resulting in enhanced SERS signals from Sb2S3 nonmetal-oxide semiconductor materials. Compared with unpatterned Sb2S3 samples, the Sb2S3 microstructures exhibited up to a 16-fold increase in Raman scattering intensity. Interestingly, our results indicate that the femtosecond laser can induce a transformation in the crystalline state of Sb2S3 and significantly enhance the Raman spectrum signal within the Sb2S3 microstructures. This enhancement is also highly dependent on the period and depth of the microstructures, possibly due to the cavity effects, resulting in a stronger local field enhancement.

RESUMO

Engineering cells for adoptive therapy requires overcoming limitations in cell viability and, in the efficiency of transgene delivery, the duration of transgene expression and the stability of genomic integration. Here we report a gene-delivery system consisting of a Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposase encoded into a messenger RNA delivered by an adeno-associated virus (AAV) encoding an SB transposon that includes the desired transgene, for mediating the permanent integration of the transgene. Compared with lentiviral vectors and with the electroporation of plasmids of transposon DNA or minicircle DNA, the gene-delivery system, which we named MAJESTIC (for 'mRNA AAV-SB joint engineering of stable therapeutic immune cells'), offers prolonged transgene expression, as well as higher transgene expression, therapeutic-cell yield and cell viability. MAJESTIC can deliver chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) into T cells (which we show lead to strong anti-tumour activity in vivo) and also transduce natural killer cells, myeloid cells and induced pluripotent stem cells with bi-specific CARs, kill-switch CARs and synthetic T-cell receptors.
