RESUMO

Azobenzene mesogens have garnered considerable research attention in the realm of photo-responsive materials due to their reversible trans-cis isomerization. In this paper, we demonstrate an azobenzene inverse opal film synthesized via photo-polymerization from a SiO2 opal template. The proposed design exhibits intriguing optical properties, including dynamic fluorescent features, distinct fluorescent enhancement, and an anti-fake micropattern with a switchable structure color. This work holds significant importance for advancing the development of novel optical devices.

Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are potential candidates for clean energy conversion materials to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. In this work, we have comprehensively studied the geometrical, electronic, and optical properties of M2CO2/MoX2 (M = Hf, Zr; X = S, Se, Te) vdW heterostructures, as well as their applications in the fields of photocatalytic and photovoltaic using density functional theory calculations. The lattice dynamic and thermal stabilities of designed M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures are confirmed. Interestingly, all the M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures exhibit intrinsic type-II band structure features, which effectively inhibit the electron-hole pair recombination and enhance the photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the internal built-in electric field and high anisotropic carrier mobility can separate the photo-generated carriers efficiently. It is noted that M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures exhibit suitable band gaps in comparison to the M2CO2 and MoX2 monolayers, which enhance the optical-harvesting abilities in the visible and ultraviolet light zones. Zr2CO2/MoSe2 and Hf2CO2/MoSe2 heterostructures possess suitable band edge positions to provide the competent driving force for water splitting as photocatalysts. In addition, Hf2CO2/MoS2 and Zr2CO2/MoS2 heterostructures deliver a power conversion efficiency of 19.75% and 17.13% for solar cell applications, respectively. These results pave the way for exploring efficient MXenes/TMDCs vdW heterostructures as photocatalytic and photovoltaic materials.

Cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis (AS) seriously affects human health. Photothermal therapy (PTT) brings hope to the diagnosis and treatment of AS, with the development of nanotechnology. To improve treatment efficiency, self-assembled CuCo2S4 nanocrystals (NCs) were developed as a drug-delivery nanocarrier, triggered by near-infrared (NIR) light for efficient chemophotothermal therapy of arterial inflammation. The as-prepared self-assembled CuCo2S4 NCs exhibited excellent biocompatibility and a very high chloroquine (CL)-loading content. In addition, the self-assembled CuCo2S4 NCs/CL nanocomposites showed good photothermal performance, due to strong absorption in the NIR region, and the release of CL from the NCs/CL nanocomposites was driven by NIR light. When illuminated by NIR light, both PTT from the NCs and chemotherapy from the CL were simultaneously triggered, resulting in killing macrophages with a synergistic effect. Moreover, chemo-photothermal therapy with CuCo2S4 NCs/CL nanocomposites showed an effective therapeutic effect for arterial inflammation, in vivo. Our work demonstrated that chemo-photothermal therapy could be a promising strategy for the treatment of arterial inflammation against atherosclerosis.

Accumulating evidence links Fusobacterium nucleatum with tumorigenesis. Our previous study demonstrated that F. nucleatum infection can induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in oral epithelial cells and elaborated a probable signal pathway involved in the induction of EMT. However, the comprehensive profiling and pathways of other candidate genes involved in F. nucleatum promoting malignant transformation remain largely elusive. Here, we analysed the transcriptome profile of HIOECs exposed to F. nucleatum infection. Totally, 3307 mRNAs (ǀLog2FCǀ >1.5) and 522 lncRNAs (ǀLog2FCǀ >1) were identified to be differentially expressed in F. nucleatum-infected HIOECs compared with non-infected HIOECs. GO and KEGG pathway analyses were performed to investigate the potential functions of the dysregulated genes. Tumour-associated genes were integrated, and top 10 hub genes (FYN, RAF1, ATM, FOS, CREB, NCOA3, VEGFA, JAK2, CREM and ATF3) were identified by protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and Oncomine was used to validate hub genes' expression. LncRNA-hub genes co-expression network comprising 67 dysregulated lncRNAs were generated. Together, our study revealed the alteration of lncRNA and potential hub genes in oral epithelial cells in response to F. nucleatum infection, which may provide new insights into the shift of normal to malignant transformation initiated by oral bacterial infection.

A ferroelectric/ferroelastic is a material whose spontaneous polarization/strain can be switched by applying an external electric field/mechanical stress. However, the optical control of spontaneous polarization/strain remains relatively unexplored in crystalline materials, although photoirradiation stands out as a nondestructive, noncontact, and remote-controlled stimulus beyond stress or electric field. Here, we present two new organic single-component homochiral photochromic multiferroics, (R)- and (S)-N-3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene-1-4-bromophenylethylamine (SA-Ph-Br(R) and SA-Ph-Br(S)), which show a full ferroelectric/ferroelastic phase transition of 222F2 type at 336 K. Under photoirradiation, their spontaneous polarization/strain can be switched quickly within seconds and reversibly between two ferroelectric/ferroelastic phases with the respective enol and trans-keto forms triggered by structural photoisomerizations. In addition, they possess a superior acoustic impedance characteristic with a value of ∼2.42 × 106 kg·s-1·m-2, lower than that of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF, (3.69-4.25) × 106 kg·s-1·m-2), which can better match human tissues. This work realizes for the first time that multiple ferroic orders in single-component organic crystals with ultralow acoustic impedance can be simultaneously controlled and coupled by three physical channels (electric, stress, light fields), suggesting their great potential in multichannel data storage, optoelectronics, and related applications compatible with all-organic electronics and human tissues.

The optical control of polarization switching is attracting tremendous interest because photoirradiation stands out as a nondestructive, noncontact, and remote-control means beyond an electric or strain field. The current research mainly uses various photoexcited electronic effects to achieve the photocontrol polarization, such as a light-driven flexoelectric effect and a photovoltaic effect. However, since photochromism was discovered in 1867, the structural phase transition caused by photoisomerization has never been associated with ferroelectricity. Here, we successfully synthesized an organic photochromic ferroelectric with polar space group Pna21, 3,4,5-trifluoro-N-(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)aniline, whose color can change between yellow and orange via laser illumination. Its dielectric permittivity and spontaneous polarization can be switched reversibly with a photoinduced phase transition triggered by structural photoisomerization between the enol form and the trans-keto form. To our knowledge, this is the first photoswitchable ferroelectric crystal to achieve polarization switching through a structural phase transition triggered by photoisomerization. This finding paves the way toward photocontrol of smart materials and biomechanical applications in the future.

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) are multipotent stromal cells that possess considerable therapeutic potential for tissue remodeling. However, their protective mechanism in critical limb ischemia has not been fully defined. After the occlusion of blood vessels, hypoxia becomes a prominent feature of the ischemic limb. This study investigated the immunomodulatory effect of ASCs on ischemic muscle repair and explored the specific mechanism. We found that the ability of RAW264.7 cells to migrate was impaired in hypoxia, whereas coculturing with ASCs could enhance the migration capacity. In addition, under hypoxic conditions, the paracrine effect of ASCs was enhanced and ASCs could induce RAW264.7 macrophages toward the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. We further demonstrated that ASCs-derived interleukin 10 (IL-10), mediated by hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), played a crucial role in the induction of M2 macrophages by activating the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3)/Arginase (Arg-1) pathway. Our in vivo experiments revealed that transplanted ASCs exhibited an immunomodulatory effect by recruiting macrophages to ischemic muscle and increasing the density of M2 macrophages. The transplantation of ASCs into ischemic limbs induced increased blood flow reperfusion and limb salvage rate, whereas the depletion of tissue macrophages or transplanting HIF-1α-silenced ASCs inhibited the therapeutic effect. These findings elucidated the critical role of macrophages in ASCs-mediated ischemic muscle repair and proved that allogeneic ASCs could exert the protective effect by enhancing the recruitment of macrophages and inducing macrophages toward M2 phenotype through HIF-1α/IL-10 pathway.

Since the discovery of the first ferroelectric Rochelle salt, most ferroelectrics have been investigated showing thermally triggered symmetry-breaking phase transition. Although photochromism arising from geometrical isomerization was reported as early as 1867, such photoswitchable ferroelectric crystals have scarcely been developed to date. Herein, we report that salicylideneaniline is a photochromic ferroelectric crystal. Upon photoirradiation, the dielectric constant shows obvious switching between high and low dielectric states, and more importantly, the ferroelectric polarization demonstrates quick and reversible switching. This work opens the gate to developing photoswitchable ferroelectrics, which holds great potential for applications in optically controlled smart devices.

ABSTRACT: To explore a new surgical treatment for infection and obstruction of ventriculoperitoneal shunt in hydrocephalus. Two cases of post-operative infection of ventriculoperitoneal shunt were analyzed retrospectively. One case was cryptococcal infection, the other case was Acinetobacter lwoffii. The number of cerebrospinal fluid cells was high, the infection of ventriculoperitoneal shunt was generally complicated with abdominal obstruction, and the hydrocephalus was aggravated again, The authors try to pull out the drainage tube at the end of abdominal cavity for external drainage, combined with intravenous antibiotics, completely control of infection, and then use the original shunt device for intraventricular jugular shunt. The authors explore that this method is simple, safe and effective, and it is an effective and feasible method for the treatment of infection after ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

Organic radical ferroics such as TEMPO have attracted widespread interest. However, the relatively low Curie temperature of 287 K and melting point of 311 K severely hinder its application potential. Despite extensive interest, high-temperature radical ferroics have not yet been found. Here, taking advantage of chemical design and supramolecular radical chemistry, we designed two high-temperature organic supramolecular radical ferroics [(NH3 -TEMPO)([18]crown-6)](ReO4 ) (1) and [(NH3 -TEMPO)([18]crown-6)](ClO4 ) (2), which can retain ferroelectricity up to 413 K and 450 K, respectively. To our knowledge, they are both the first supramolecular radical ferroics and unprecedented high-temperature radical ferroics, where the supramolecular component is vital for the stabilization of the radical and extending the working temperature window. Both also have paramagnetism, non-interacting spin moments, and excellent piezoelectric and electrostrictive behaviors comparable to that of LiNbO3 .

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of placement of a proximal covered stent graft combined with a distal bare stent are controversial because of the lack of evidence. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the outcomes of combined proximal covered stent grafting with distal bare stenting (BS group) and proximal covered stent grafting without distal bare stenting (non-BS group). METHODS: The MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases and key references were searched up to January 26, 2019. Predefined outcomes of interest were mortality, morbidity, and postoperative assessment of aortic remodeling. We pooled risk ratios (RRs) of the outcomes of interest using fixed effects model or random effects model. RESULTS: Overall, eight observational studies involving 914 patients were included. There were no significant differences in overall aorta-related mortality (RR, 0.54; confidence interval [CI], 0.24-1.24; P = .15), complete thoracic false lumen (FL) thrombosis rate (RR, 1.23; CI, 0.83-1.81; P = .30), or complete abdominal FL thrombosis rate (RR, 1.96; CI, 0.68-5.69; P = .21) between the BS group and the non-BS group. The BS group had a lower rate of partial thoracic FL thrombosis (RR, 0.40; CI, 0.25-0.65; P = .0002), a lower stent graft-induced new entry rate (RR, 0.08; CI, 0.02-0.41; P = .003), and a lower reintervention rate (RR, 0.42; CI, 0.26-0.69; P = .0005). CONCLUSIONS: Combined proximal covered stent grafting with distal adjunctive bare stenting had the potential to reduce the partial thoracic FL thrombosis rate and the rates of stent graft-induced new entry and reintervention but was not associated with lower aorta-related mortality or the complete FL thrombosis rate. Further research with a stricter methodology is needed.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between periodontal disease and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in oral cavity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane library, Gray literature, and clinicaltrials.gov for eligible studies up to September 25, 2019. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The random-effects model was used with the software STATA 13.0. The Newcastle-Ottawa-Scale was used for quality evaluation. RESULTS: Twelve observational studies (eight from Asia, one from Europe, and three from the South America) involving 2727 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The overall pooled results showed that H. pylori infection in oral cavity was associated with periodontal disease (OR 2.53, 95% CI 1.86-3.44, P < 0.05). No significant heterogeneity among the articles was observed (I2 = 44.3%, P < 0.05). The sensitivity analysis indicated that the result of our meta-analysis was generally stable. The Begg test and the Egger test both showed no publication bias was observed (P = 0.45 and P = 0.18 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Based on current available evidence, it seemed there was a correlation between oral H. pylori infection and the occurrence of periodontal disease. However, since most of the data comes from Asia, more large-scale investigations with high quality from all over the world are needed to confirm the association. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: H. pylori infection in oral may have a positive association with the prevalence of periodontal disease mainly in Asian populations.

Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted considerable interests because of their easy and environmentally friendly processing, low acoustical impedance and mechanical flexibility. Herein, a molecular thermochromic ferroelectric, N,N'-dimethyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium tetrachlorocuprate(II) ([DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 ) is reported, which shows both excellent ferroelectricity and intriguing thermochromism. [DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition from Pca21 to Pbcm at a significantly high Curie temperature of 413 K, accompanied by a color change from yellow to red that is due to the remarkable deformation of [CuCl4 ]2- tetrahedron, where the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases correspond to yellow and red, respectively. Combined with multiple bistable physical properties, [DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 would be a promising candidate for next-generation smart devices, and should inspire further exploration of multifunctional molecular ferroelectrics.

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a pivotal periodontal pathogen, and the epithelial cells serve as the first physical barrier to defend the host from bacterial attack. Within this host-bacteria interaction, P. gingivalis can modify the host immune reaction and adjust the gene expression, which is associated with periodontitis pathogenesis and developing strategies. Herein, a meta-analysis was made to get the differential gene expression profiles in epithelial cells with or without P. gingivalis infection. The network-based meta-analysis program for gene expression profiling was used. Both the gene ontology analysis and the pathway enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes were conducted. Our results determined that 290 genes were consistently up-regulated in P. gingivalis infected epithelial cells. 229 gene ontology biological process terms of up-regulated genes were discovered, including "negative regulation of apoptotic process" and "positive regulation of cell proliferation/migration/angiogenesis". In addition to the well-known inflammatory signaling pathways, the pathway associated with a transcriptional misregulation in cancer has also been increased. Our findings indicated that P. gingivalis benefited from the survival of epithelial cells, and got its success as a colonizer in oral epithelium. The results also suggested that infection of P. gingivalis might contribute to oral cancer through chronic inflammation. Negative regulation of the apoptotic process and transcriptional misregulation in cancer pathway are important contributors to the cellular physiology changes during infection development, which have particular relevance to the pathogenesis and progressions of periodontitis, even to the occurrence of oral cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to detect pyroptosis in macrophages stimulated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and elucidate the mechanism by which P. gingivalis induces pyroptosis in macrophages. METHODS: The immortalized human monocyte cell line U937 was stimulated with P. gingivalis W83. Flow cytometry was carried out to detect pyroptosis in macrophages. The expression of miR-155 was detected by real-time PCR and inhibited using RNAi. Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) 1, cleaved GSDMD, caspase (CAS)-1, caspase-11, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC), and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) were detected by Western blotting, and IL-1ß and IL-18 were detected by ELISA. RESULTS: The rate of pyroptosis in macrophages and the expression of miR-155 increased upon stimulation with P. gingivalis and pyroptosis rate decreased when miR-155 was silenced. GSDMD-NT, CAS-11, CAS-1, ASC, NLRP3, IL-1ß, and IL-18 levels increased, but SOCS1 decreased in U937 cells after stimulated with P. gingivalis. These changes were weakened in P. gingivalis-stimulated U937 macrophages transfected with lentiviruses carrying miR-155 shRNA compared to those transfected with non-targeting control sequence. However, there was no significant difference in ASC expression between P. gingivalis-stimulated shCont and shMiR-155 cells. CONCLUSIONS: Porphyromonas gingivalis promotes pyroptosis in macrophages during early infection. miR-155 is involved in this process through regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome.

BACKGROUND: Angiopoietin-like-3 (Angptl3) knockout is known for its protective effects on podocyte injury and proteinuria in the early stage of adriamycin (ADR) nephropathy. The current study re-evaluated the renoprotective effect of Angptl3 knockout in chronic ADR nephropathy and attempted to explore the mechanism underlying the effect associated with Angptl3 knockout in glomerulosclerosis. METHODS: B6; 129S5 mice were injected with ADR to induce nephropathy. Kidney structure and serum and urine parameters were observed during long-term follow-up. Cultured primary mouse podocytes were exposed to ADR and analyzed for the expression of some relative proteins. Podocyte loss was analyzed in both in vivo and in vitro experiments. RESULTS: Angptl3 knockout attenuated proteinuria and hypoproteinemia, protected renal structure and function, and improved the survival of mice over the whole process of ADR nephropathy. Furthermore, Angptl3 knockout reduced the numbers of the detached and apoptotic cells in the renal tissue and alleviated podocyte loss in mice with ADR chronic nephropathy, thereby, delaying the glomerulosclerosis formation. Additional results in vitro showed that Angptl3 knockout attenuated ADR-induced primary podocyte loss, including podocyte detachment and apoptosis. CONCLUSION: In addition to serving a renoprotective role in the early stage of ADR nephropathy, Angptl3 knockout contributed to disease amelioration throughout the ADR nephropathy process. Angptl3 knockout effectively delayed glomerulosclerosis formation by attenuating podocyte loss through rescuing podocytes from detachment and apoptosis. Angptl3 antagonists or inhibitors might have therapeutic potential in the occurrence and progression of nephropathy.

RESUMO

A reversible solvent-sensitive actuator with a continuous bending/debending process is fabricated by over-infiltration of liquid crystal monomers into a colloidal template and subsequent photopolymerization. The fabricated actuator exhibits a maximum bending angle of 1080° in 1.58 s in dichloromethane, accompanied with successive debending in 0.32 s. The behavior of the actuator can be modulated by changing the solvent type, film thickness/length and molar ratio of A6OCB/C6M. This study will provide an important experimental and theoretical basis for the development of novel actuators.

BACKGROUND: Porphyromonas gingivalis is strongly associated with the development, progression, severity and recurrence of periodontitis. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) play an important role in the maintenance of periodontal tissue self-renewal and repair. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of P. gingivalis to infect PDLSCs using an in vitro monolayer model. METHODS: We separated and cultured primary PDLSCs using the tissue block with limiting dilution method. The efficiency of P. gingivalis (ATCC 33277) infection of PDLSCs was measured using agar plate culture and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR) methods. PDLSCs infected with P. gingivalis were also observed by transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: We assessed stem cell properties including cell morphology, clone formation, growth activity, cell surface antigens and multiple differentiation capacity. The infection rates of P. gingivalis in PDLSC at MOIs of 50, 100, 200, and 500 were 5.83%, 8.12%, 7.77% and 7.53% according to the agar plate culture method. By q-PCR, the efficiencies of P. gingivalis infection of PDLSCs at MOIs of 50, 100, 200, and 500 were 6.74%, 10.56%, 10.36% and 9.78%, respectively. Overall, the infection efficiency based on q-PCR was higher than that according to agar plate culture. Using transmission electron microscopy, we verified that P. gingivalis (ATCC 33277) could infect and invade PDLSCs after 2 h of incubation, and endocytic vacuoles were not found surrounding the internalized bacteria. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our data demonstrate that P. gingivalis can invade PDLSCs.

BACKGROUND: Puberty onset is a complex, organized biological process with multilevel regulation, and its physiopathological mechanisms are yet to be elucidated. RFRP-3, the mammalian ortholog to gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone, is implicated in inhibiting the synthesis and release of gonadotropin in mammals. However, it is unclear whether RFRP-3 participates in regulating pubertal development. METHODS: This study investigated the functional significance and regulatory mechanism of hypothalamic RFRP-3 neuropeptide in the onset of puberty in young female rats. On postnatal day 22, we implanted cannulas into the lateral ventricles of female rat pups. From postnatal day 28 to postnatal day 36, the intracerebroventricular injection of RFRP-3, or vehicle, was conducted twice a day. To investigate whether puberty onset was affected, we examined the body weight, age of vaginal opening, serum hormone levels, uterus and ovary development, and hypothalamic Kiss-1 mRNA expression. RESULTS: Intracerebroventricular injection of RFRP-3 significantly decreased the serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone and estradiol, delayed uterine maturation, and postponed the time of vaginal opening. This study suggests that RFRP-3 can delay the onset of puberty in young female rats; the expression of Kiss-1 mRNA is potently inhibited in the RFRP-3 group. Moreover, our data show that RFRP-3 elevates serum growth hormone levels. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that intracerebroventricular injection of RFRP-3 significantly delays the onset of puberty in female rats. Additionally, RFRP-3 may be associated with prepubertal rise in the secretion of growth hormone.

A directly-coupled-column ultra-fast liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection method for the determination of 12 allergenic disperse dyes in river water at sub-ppb levels has been developed and successfully validated. The analytical method is based on the use of two different reversed-phased columns connected through a two-position switching valve. A baseline separation was achieved by proper selection of stationary phases, mobile phases, and the use of a gradient elution in both dimensions. Furthermore, an easy-to-handle magnetic solid-phase extraction procedure was developed for the preconcentration of 12 allergenic disperse dyes from river water. An enrichment factor of 100 times was obtained. The results showed excellent performance in terms of trueness (76.8-99.0%), precision (intraday: 2.2-8.0%, interday: 3.3-8.2%), and sensitivity (limits of determination, 0.027-1.46 µg/L). Twenty real samples collected from the outfalls in the Yaojiang, Yongjiang and Fenghuajiang estuary were analyzed, and three of the studied compounds were found in one collected sample (12.6 µg/L for disperse blue 7, 11.6 µg/L for disperse blue 106, and 0.22 µg/L for disperse blue 3).
