BACKGROUND: Our study aims to comprehensively assess nutrition status and malnutritional prevalence in early allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (allo-HSCT) patients. METHODS: This single-center, cross-sectional study included 171 patients within the 90 days post-transplantation (from September 2019 to April 2020). Data collected included demographic, 3 day 24-h diet record, a Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) tool, laboratory tests, anthropometric indices, and body composition. RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-one patients with a mean age of 37.8 ± 11.3 and a male to female ratio of 102 to 69 were included. According to PG-SGA, 115 (67.3%) indicated the critical need for nutritional intervention and symptom management (PG-SGA score > 9). Forty-three (43.3%) of patients had experienced insufficient intakes of energy according to a 24-h diet record. Our study found that 120 (70.2%) patients had a body fat percentage and high triacylglycerol (64.9%). Reduced free fat mass index and low hand-grip strength were found in 133 (77.78%) and 104 (60.81%), respectively. The prevalence of malnutrition was 24.6% and the prevalence of sarcopenia was 13.5%. CONCLUSION: Although the prevalence was not high, this research has demonstrated a high risk of malnutrition and a lower muscle mass in early allo-HSCT. Furthermore, our study confirmed body composition assessment would be an excellent way to identify malnutrition precisely.

Few prospective studies have examined posttransplant chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell infusion as candidates for front-line consolidation therapy for high-risk multiple myeloma (MM) patients. This single-arm exploratory clinical trial is the first to evaluate the safety and efficacy of sequential anti-CD19 and anti-BCMA CAR-T cell infusion, followed by lenalidomide maintenance after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), in 10 high-risk newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients. The treatment was generally well tolerated, with hematologic toxicities being the most common grade 3 or higher adverse events. All patients had cytokine release syndrome (CRS), which was grade 1 in 5 patients (50%) and grade 2 in 5 patients (50%). No neurotoxicity was observed after CAR-T cell infusion. The overall response rate was 100%, with the best response being 90% for a stringent complete response (sCR), and 10% for a complete response (CR). At a median follow-up of 42 (36-49) months, seven (70%) of 10 patients showed sustained minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity for more than 2 years. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were not reached. Although the sample size was small and there was a lack of control in this single-arm study, the clinical benefits observed warrant ongoing randomized controlled trials.

A putative mycovirus belonging to the proposed family "Fusariviridae" was discovered in Setosphaeria turcica by sequencing a double-stranded RNA extracted from this phytopathogenic fungus. The virus was tentatively named "Setosphaeria turcica fusarivirus 1" (StFV1). StFV1 has a genome comprising 6685 nucleotides. The genome contains three open reading frames (ORF). The largest ORF, ORF1, is preceded by an untranslated region (UTR) of 16 nucleotides and separated from ORF2 by an intergenic region of 63 nucleotides. The smallest ORF, ORF3, overlaps ORF2 by 16 nucleotides and is followed by a 3'-UTR of 82 nucleotides. The protein encoded by ORF1 is 71.8%, 67.4% and 68.1% identical to the RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RdRps) of Pleospora typhicola fusarivirus 1 (PtFV1), Plasmopara viticola lesion-associated fusarivirus 1 (PvlaFV1), and Plasmopara viticola lesion-associated fusarivirus 3 (PvlaFV3), respectively, but has less than 47% amino acid sequence identity to the RdRps of other fusariviruses. To our knowledge, this is the first fusarivirus discovered in S. turcica and the first virus to be identified in this fungus using conventional cloning methods.

A putative polymycovirus tentatively named "Setosphaeria turcica polymycovirus 1" (StPmV1) was discovered in the phytopathogenic fungus Setosphaeria turcica. StPmV1 has a genome comprising five double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs). dsRNA1, 2, and 3 each encode a protein sharing significant similarity but lower than 64% sequence identity to the corresponding proteins of other polymycoviruses. dsRNA4 and 5 each encode a protein with a sequence that is not conserved among polymycoviruses. However, the protein encoded by dsRNA4 is rich in proline (P), alanine (A), and serine (S) residues, which is a feature shared by the so-called PAS-rich proteins encoded by all polymycoviruses. Phylogeny reconstruction using the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) sequences of accepted or putative polymycoviruses revealed that StPmV1 is most closely related to Plasmopara viticola lesion associated polymycovirus 1 (PvaPolymyco1), a putative polymycovirus recovered from the phytopathogenic oomycetes Plasmopara viticola. These data suggest that StPmV1 may represent a novel species of the genus Polymycovirus, family Polymycoviridae. To our knowledge, this is the first polymycovirus reported from S. turcica.

In this study, we documented the impact of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) on the various morpho-physiological changes by root irrigation in tobacco plants in the matrix media, as well as the uptake and accumulation of the NPs over a range of concentrations (50⁻250 µg/mL). Our results showed that the seed germination rate was not affected following exposure to MgONPs for 5 days. Enhanced plant growth together with increased peroxidase activity (39.63 U mg-1 protein in the 250 µg/mL MgONPs treatment, 36.63 U mg-1 protein in the control), superoxide dismutase activity (30.15 U mg-1 protein compared to 26.95 U mg-1 protein in the control), and chlorophyll content (the chlorophyll a and b contents in 0 and 250 µg/mL of MgONPs were 0.21, 0.12 µg/g to 1.21, 0.67 µg/g, respectively) were observed after 30 days of MgONP treatment. However, the malondialdehyde, protein, and relative water contents did not differ significantly, indicating that the NPs in the test concentrations had no phytotoxicity and even promoted plant growth. Scanning electron microscopy and paraffin section observations indicated that the MgONPs did not affect the plant tissue structures and cells. In addition, an elevated Mg content was detected in the plant tissues exposed to MgONPs, suggesting that the Mg was taken up by the tobacco roots and translocated to the shoots and leaves, which were probably the most important tools to cause an increase in the chlorophyll content and stimulate growth. In particular, compared with the controls, a substantially higher Mg content was observed in the leaves (12.93 mg/g in the MgONPs treatment, 9.30 mg/g in the control) exposed to 250 µg/mL MgONPs, especially in the lower and middle leaves. This result confirmed that the contents of plant Mg-element in the old leaves were increased by MgONPs. In summary, this study investigated increased Mg uptake and growth stimulation, as well as the induction of various positive morpho-physiological changes to tobacco plants when exposed to MgONPs. Results elucidate the promotional impact of the NPs on plant health and their implications for agricultural safety and security.

BACKGROUND: Slugs mechanically damage plant leaves, resulting in significant economic losses. However, there are limited cost-efficient strategies available in slug management. By studying how slugs utilize plant volatiles to locate host plants, we can gain insights into the design of attractants and repellents. RESULTS: Bioassay results suggest slugs (Agriolimax agrestis) prefer to orientate to lettuce (Lactuca sativa), cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.), and young tobacco seedlings, compared with old tobacco seedlings. We analyzed the volatomics of lettuce, cabbage, young and old tobacco seedlings. 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)-ethanol acetate (2EA) had high abundance while nonanal, decanal, and ß-cylocitral had relatively low content in volatiles. Old tobacco seedlings released significantly more hexanal but fewer 1,4-dihydro-4-oxopyridazine (DO). In olfactory tests, hexanal, nonanal, decanal, and ß-cylocitral showed strong repellency to slugs, while DO at a dose of 500 ng/µL and 2EA at a dose of 1% were attractive to slugs. The two alkanes, hexadecane and heptadecane, had no effect on slug orientating to host plants. DO and 2EA can thus alleviate the repellency of hexanal, nonanal, decanal and ß-cylocitral. CONCLUSION: The high emission of hexanal in old tobacco seedlings helps repel slugs, while 2EA and DO attract slugs to lettuce and cabbage. These findings suggest that these chemicals can be utilized in the design of repellents and attractants, and contribute to constructing a push-pull system for slug control. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease characterized by the destruction of periodontal tissues, and the promotion of bone tissue regeneration is the key to curing periodontitis. Psoralen is the main component of Psoralea corylifolia Linn, and has multiple biological effects, including anti-osteoporosis and osteogenesis. We constructed a novel hydrogel loaded with psoralen (PSO) and stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) for direct endogenous cell homing. This study aimed to evaluate the synergistic effects of PSO/SDF-1 on periodontal bone regeneration in patients with periodontitis. The results of CCK8, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay, and Alizarin Red staining showed that PSO/SDF-1 combination treatment promoted cell proliferation, chemotaxis ability, and ALP activity of PDLSCs. qRT-PCR and western blotting showed that the expression levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), dwarf-associated transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), and osteocalcin (OCN) gene were upregulated. Rat periodontal models were established to observe the effect of local application of the composite hydrogel on bone regeneration. These results proved that the PSO/SDF-1 combination treatment significantly promoted new bone formation. The immunohistochemical (IHC) results confirmed the elevated expression of ALP, RUNX2, and OCN osteogenic genes. PSO/SDF-1 composite hydrogel can synergistically regulate the biological function and promote periodontal bone formation. Thus, this study provides a novel strategy for periodontal bone regeneration.

BACKGROUND: The risk factors for skin injuries remain poorly understood in cancer patients with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). We herein aimed at exploring the effect of clinical factors on the risk of PICC-related skin injuries. METHODS: We included 1245 cancer patients with PICC from 16 hospitals in Suzhou, China. The study outcome was in-hospital skin injuries, including contact dermatitis, skin (epidermal) stripping, tension injury, allergic dermatitis, skin tear, maceration, folliculitis, and pressure injury. RESULTS: During hospitalization, 274 patients (22.0%) developed skin injuries after prolonged use of an indwelling catheter. Univariable logistic regression analysis identified several risk factors for PICC-related skin injuries; multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the following factors independently and significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the risk of PICC-related skin injuries: body mass index (BMI, >25 kg/m2 versus <18.5 kg/m2: odds ratio (OR), 1.79; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03-3.11), skin condition (humid vs normal: OR, 2.96; 95% CI, 1.62-5.43), skin indentation (OR, 4.67; 95% CI, 3.31-6.58), allergic history (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.21-3.66), history of dermatitis (OR, 3.05; 95% CI, 1.00-9.28), history of eczema (OR, 3.36; 95% CI, 1.20-9.43), catheter insertion site (under elbow vs. upper arm: OR, 3.32; 95% CI, 1.12-9.90), and PICC maintenance interval (4-5 days vs ⩽3 days: OR, 0.06; 95% CI, 0.01-0.50; 5-7 days vs ⩽3 days: OR, 0.07; 95% CI, 0.02-0.31; 7-9 days vs ⩽3 days: OR, 0.10; 95% CI, 0.02-0.57). CONCLUSIONS: BMI, skin condition, skin indentation, allergic history, history of dermatitis, history of eczema, catheter insertion site, and PICC maintenance interval were independent risk factors for PICC-related skin injuries in cancer patients. This knowledge will guide future studies with formulating optimal treatment strategies for improving the skin health of cancer patients with PICC.

Background: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) is an evolutionarily conserved protein that plays multiple roles in metabolic regulation. Over the past two decades, numerous studies have deepened our understanding of its various functions and its pharmacological value. Nevertheless, most clinical trials have not achieved the desired results, which raises issues regarding its clinical value. In this bibliometric analysis, we evaluated the state of FGF-21 research over the last 20 years and identified important topics, achievements, and potential future directions. Methods: Publications related to FGF-21 were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection-Science Citation Index Expanded. HistCite, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used for bibliometric analysis and visualization, including the analysis of annual publications, leading countries, active institutions and authors, core journals, co-cited references, and keywords. Results: Altogether, 2,490 publications related to FGF-21 were obtained. A total of 12,872 authors from 2,628 institutions in 77 countries or regions reported studies on FGF-21. The United States of America was the most influential country in FGF-21 research. Alexei Kharitonenkov, Steven A. Kliewer, and David J. Mangelsdorf were the most influential scholars, and endocrinology journals had a core status in the field. The physiological roles, clinical translation, and FGF-21-based drug development were the main topics of research, and future studies may concentrate on the central effects of FGF-21, FGF-21-based drug development, and the effects of FGF-21 on non-metabolic diseases. Conclusion: The peripheral metabolic effects of FGF-21, FGF-21-based drug development, and translational research on metabolic diseases are the three major topics in FGF-21 research, whereas the central metabolic effects of FGF-21 and the effects of FGF-21 on metabolic diseases are the emerging trends and may become the following hot topics in FGF-21 research.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to determine the independent risk factors associated with peripheral venous catheter (PVC) failure and develop a model that can predict PVC failure. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter cohort study was carried out in nine tertiary hospitals in Suzhou, China between December 2017 and February 2018. Adult patients undergoing first-time insertion of a PVC were observed from catheter insertion to removal. Logistic regression was used to identify the independent risk factors predicting PVC failure. RESULTS: This study included 5345 patients. The PVC failure rate was 54.05% (n = 2889/5345), and the most common causes of PVC failure were phlebitis (16.3%) and infiltration/extravasation (13.8%). On multivariate analysis, age (45-59 years: OR, 1.295; 95% CI, 1.074-1.561; 60-74 years: OR, 1.375; 95% CI, 1.143-1.654; ⩾75 years: OR, 1.676; 95% CI, 1.355-2.073); department (surgery OR, 1.229; 95% CI, 1.062-1.423; emergency internal/surgical ward OR, 1.451; 95% CI, 1.082-1.945); history of venous puncture in the last week (OR, 1.298, 95% CI 1.130-1.491); insertion site, number of puncture attempts, irritant fluid infusion, daily infusion time, daily infusion volume, and type of sealing liquid were independent predictors of PVC failure. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that a logistic regression model constructed using these variables had moderate accuracy for the prediction of PVC failure (area under the curve, 0.781). The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test demonstrated that the model was correctly specified (χ2 = 2.514, p = 0.961). CONCLUSION: This study should raise awareness among healthcare providers of the risk factors for PVC failure. We recommend that healthcare providers use vascular access device selection tools to select a clinically appropriate device and for the timely detection of complications, and have a list of drugs classified as irritants or vesicants so they can monitor patients receiving fluid infusions containing these drugs more frequently.

Recent studies have observed differing microbiomes between disease-suppressive and disease-conducive soils. However, it remains unclear whether the microbial keystone taxa in suppressive soil are critical for the suppression of diseases. Bacterial wilt is a common soil-borne disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum that affects tobacco plants. In this study, two contrasting tobacco fields with bacterial wilt disease incidences of 0% (disease suppressive) and 100% (disease conducive) were observed. Through amplicon sequencing, as expected, a high abundance of Ralstonia was found in the disease-conducive soil, while large amounts of potential beneficial bacteria were found in the disease-suppressive soil. In the fungal community, an abundance of the Fusarium genus, which contains species that cause Fusarium wilt, showed a positive correlation (p < 0.001) with the abundance of Ralstonia. Network analysis revealed that the healthy plants had more complex bacterial networks than the diseased plants. A total of 9 and 13 bacterial keystone taxa were identified from the disease-suppressive soil and healthy root, respectively. Accumulated abundance of these bacterial keystones showed a negative correlation (p < 0.001) with the abundance of Ralstonia. To complement network analysis, culturable strains were isolated, and three species belonging to Pseudomonas showed high 16S rRNA gene similarity (98.4-100%) with keystone taxa. These strains displayed strong inhibition on pathogens and reduced the incidence of bacterial wilt disease in greenhouse condition. This study highlighted the importance of keystone species in the protection of crops against pathogen infection and proposed an approach to obtain beneficial bacteria through identifying keystone species, avoiding large-scale bacterial isolation and cultivation.

Transcriptome is used to determine the induction response of Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit T2 plus line (abbreviated as PT2P line) infected with Pectobacterium carotovorum. The main objective of the study was to deal with the transcriptome database of PT2P line resistance to soft rot pathogens to provide a new perspective for identifying the resistance-related genes and understanding the molecular mechanism. Results indicated that water soaking and tissue collapse started at 20 h after PT2P line was infected by P. carotovorum. A total of 1360 and 5768 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at 0 h and 20 h, respectively. After 20 h of infection, growth and development-related pathways were inhibited. Meanwhile, DEGs were promoted the colonization of P. carotovorum pathogens in specific cell wall modification processes at the early infected stage. A shift to a defensive response was triggered at 0 h. A large number of DEGs were mainly up-controlled at 20 h and were substantially used in the pathogen recognition and the introduction of signal transformation cascades, secondary metabolites biosynthesis, pathogenic proteins activation, transcription aspects and numerous transporters. Furthermore, our data provided novel insights into the transcript reprogramming of PT2P line in response to P. carotovorum infestation.

RESUMO

The deacylation of glucose, galactose and mannose pentaacetates, galactose and mannose penta(3-bromo)benzoates, as well as the dealkylation of 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl and 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-(3-bromo)benzoyl methyl alpha-D-glucopyranosides have been studied. In addition, a computational study on the deacylation of beta-D-glucose pentaacetate has been carried out with density functional theory (B3LYP/6-31G*). The anomeric effect during deacetylation and dealkylation has been clearly demonstrated in both experimental and computational results.

SnRK2 is a plant-specific protein kinase family implicated in environmental stress tolerance. Individual SnRK2 genes have acquired distinct regulatory properties in response to various environmental stresses. In this study, NtSnRK2.2, a SnRK2 subclass II member in Nicotiana tabacum L., was cloned and characterised. Sequence alignment analysis showed that SnRK2.2 exhibits widespread sequence differences across Nicotiana species. The tissue expression pattern of NtSnRK2.2 showed a root-predominant expression. To investigate its biological function, NtSnRK2.2 was overexpressed in tobacco, which subsequently resulted in increased soluble sugars and more lateral roots under a normal condition. A salt-stress tolerance assay showed that NtSnRK2.2-overexpressing plants exhibited enhanced salt tolerance, which was further confirmed based on its better root architecture and increase in soluble sugars, thereby implying that NtSnRK2.2 is a multifunctional regulatory factor in plants. Together, our results indicated the possible role played by NtSnRK2.2 in maintaining metabolic homeostasis via the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism in response to environmental stress.

Temperature is a primary factor affecting the rate of plant development; as the climate warms, extreme temperature events are likely to increasingly affect agriculture. Understanding how to improve crop tolerance to heat stress is a key concern. Wild plants have evolved numerous strategies to tolerate environmental conditions, notably the regulation of root architecture by phytohormones, but the molecular mechanisms of stress resistance are unclear. In this study, we showed that high temperatures could significantly reduce tobacco biomass and change its root architecture, probably through changes in auxin content and distribution. Overexpression of the OsPT8 phosphate transporter enhanced tobacco tolerance to high-temperature stress by changing the root architecture and increased the antioxidant ability. Molecular assays suggested that overexpression of OsPT8 in tobacco significantly increased the expression of auxin synthesis genes NtYUCCA 6, 8 and auxin efflux carriers genes NtPIN 1,2 under high-temperature stress. We also found that the expression levels of auxin response factors NtARF1 and NtARF2 were increased in OsPT8 transgenic tobacco under high-temperature stress, suggesting that OsPT8 regulates auxin signaling in response to high-temperature conditions. Our findings provided new insights into the molecular mechanisms of plant stress signaling and showed that OsPT8 plays a key role in regulating plant tolerance to stress conditions.

Two novel 3-decalinoyltetramic acid (3DTA) derivatives, namely fusarisetins C and D (1 and 2), and four known derivatives (3-6) were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Fusarium equiseti D39. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) calculations, and X-ray crystallography. Compound 2 was identified as the first fusarisetin to possess an unprecedented carbon skeleton with a tetracyclic ring system comprised of a decalin moiety (6/6) and a tetramic acid moiety. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for the isolated compounds was proposed. All 3DTAs derivatives exhibited a potent phytotoxicity, and 5 also displayed a remarkable anti-phytopathogenic activity superior to the positive control resulting in damage of the cell membrane of Pseudomonas syringae and ensuing leakage of the intracellular components. Here, the phytotoxicity of fusarisetins has been reported for the first time. The OSMAC fermentation optimization approach to give 5 was performed by varying the culture media and salinities. The results showed that potato liquid medium with 1% salinity is the most favorable condition for the production of 5.

Insect resistance and glyphosate tolerance have been two of the most important traits in the genetic improvement of various crops. In this study, two Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal genes, Cry1Ac and Cry1Ig, and a modified glyphosate-tolerant 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene (G10) were combined into a single transferred DNA (T-DNA) fragment and introduced into rice by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. A transgenic line with single-copy T-DNA insertion named GAI-14 was found to be highly resistant to striped stem borer and rice leaf roller, and tolerant to glyphosate. Analysis of T-DNA border sequence suggested that the transgenes were inserted at the chromosome 3 and appeared to have not interrupted any known or putative genes. A field trial observed no significant difference in the basic agronomic traits between GAI-14 and the recipient rice.

Insect resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crystal protein is a major threat to the long-term use of transgenic Bt crops. Gene stacking is a readily deployable strategy to delay the development of insect resistance while it may also broaden insecticidal spectrum. Here, we report the creation of transgenic rice expressing discrete Cry1Ab and Cry2Ab simultaneously from a single expression cassette using 2A self-cleaving peptides, which are autonomous elements from virus guiding the polycistronic viral gene expression in eukaryotes. The synthetic coding sequences of Cry1Ab and Cry2Ab, linked by the coding sequence of a 2A peptide from either foot and mouth disease virus or porcine teschovirus-1, regardless of order, were all expressed as discrete Cry1Ab and Cry2Ab at high levels in the transgenic rice. Insect bioassays demonstrated that the transgenic plants were highly resistant to lepidopteran pests. This study suggested that 2A peptide can be utilized to express multiple Bt genes at high levels in transgenic crops.

The block-localized wave function (BLW) method is the simplest and most efficient variant of ab initio valence bond (VB) theory which defines electron-localized resonance states following the conventional VB concepts. Here, a BLW-based two-state approach is proposed to probe the charge/hole transfer reactions within the Marcus-Hush model. With this approach, both the electronic coupling and reorganization energies can be derived at the ab initio level. Pilot applications to the electron/hole transfers between two phenyl rings are presented. Good exponential correlation between the electronic coupling energy and the donor-acceptor distance is shown, whereas the inner-sphere reorganization shows little geometric dependency. Computations also support the assumption in Marcus theory that the thermal electron transfer barrier (ΔG*), which is a sum of the reaction barrier (ΔEa) for electron/hole transfer and the coupling energy (VAB), is a quarter of the reorganization energy (λ).

Compared with their isoelectronic system ethane, both hydrogen peroxide and hydrazine exhibit a double well torsional energy curve where skew conformers are favored over trans conformers and cis conformers are energy-maximum states. Clearly, the involvement of the lone oxygen and nitrogen pairs, or more specifically, the enhanced stabilizing n→σ* negative hyperconjugation effect and destabilizing repulsion among lone pairs, complicates the conformational analysis. In this work, the modern ab initio valence bond (VB) method is employed to quantitatively investigate the torsional energy curves of hydrogen peroxide and hydrazine in terms of hyperconjugative stabilization, steric repulsion, and structural and electronic relaxations. It is found that if the hyperconjugation effect is completely quenched, the trans conformers will be favored, while the cis conformers are the only transition state pertaining to the torsional motion in the potential energy surfaces of H2O2 and N2H4. Although usually the steric effect includes the contributions from the electronic and geometric changes, our energy decomposition analysis shows that even the steric effect favors the skew conformers, while the electronic and geometric changes stabilize the trans conformers. Thus, we conclude that both the hyperconjugative and steric interactions lower the energy of skew conformers and eventually form low barriers from skew to trans conformers and high barriers from skew to cis conformers in both H2O2 and N2H4. Comparison between the VB and the natural bond orbital (NBO) results show similarities and discrepancies between the two methods.
