RESUMO

This work reports a portable, origami-type paper device with a plasmonic fluor-labeled microneedle sensing module for the multiplexed quantification of anemia biomarkers in whole blood. Sequential steps, including serum separation, target enrichment, and multiplexed readout by a gel imager, are rapidly accomplished with the flexible and highly integrated device. The microneedle array enabled efficient sampling of trace targets from ng mL-1 to pg mL-1 level. Combined with the plasmonic fluor label, the signal is improved by ≈7.6 folds compared with the flat substrate-based assay. The device is applied to simultaneously quantify hemoglobin (Hb), ferritin, folic acid (FA), and vitamin B12 (VB12 ), which are four anemia biomarkers distributed in different environments with different concentration ranges. Featured by the small sample volume (150 µL), short assay time (20 min), low cost (2 $), robust stability, and user-friendliness, the device is promising for the rapid and accurate diagnosis of anemia in real practice.

Various environmental and behavioural factors influence neonatal health. Gamete formation (gametogenesis) is a crucial period which affects embryo development and neonatal health and ambient air pollution exposure at this stage may lead to an adverse birth outcome. Previous epidemiological and toxicological research demonstrated a strong association between maternal ambient air pollution exposure and adverse birth outcomes. However, the joint exposure-outcome of paternal exposure (76 days before the last menstruation and 14 days after the last menstruation) and maternal exposure (14 days after the last menstruation) when exploring the mechanism of the influence of air pollutants on pregnancy outcome and neonatal health remains unexplored. Here, in the Project Environmental and LifEstyle FActors iN metabolic health throughout life-course Trajectories (ELEFANT), we collected the data of 10,960 singleton pregnant women with 24-42 completed gestational weeks and included them in this study. A multinominal logistic regression model was applied to investigate the association between adverse birth outcomes and ambient PM2.5 exposure levels during spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Results from the binary classification of ambient PM2.5 exposure showed that the risk of abnormal birthweight was significantly greater when ambient PM2.5 exposure was both higher during spermatogenesis and oogenesis, with RRs of 1.86 (95% CI: 1.02, 3.39). The risk of macrosomia (RR: 1.88 (95% CI: 1.13, 3.12)) increased significantly when ambient PM2.5 levels were higher during spermatogenesis. Primiparity and primigravity are more likely to be influenced by higher ambient PM2.5 levels during spermatogenesis. In conclusion, more attention should be paid to higher exposure level of ambient PM2.5 during spermatogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The development of urbanization has led to emerging mental health issues. Green space was becoming increasingly important for mental health. Previous studies have demonstrated the value of green space for a variety of outcomes connected to mental health. However, uncertainty remains regarding the association between green spaces and the risk of depression and anxiety outcomes. This study aimed to integrate present evidence from observational studies to define the association of exposure to green space with depression and anxiety. METHODS: A thorough electronic search of PubMed, Web of Science and Embase database was performed. We transformed the odds ratio (OR) of different green increments into per 0.1 unit increase in normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and per 10% increase in percentage of green space. Cochrane's Q and I2 statistics were used to assess study heterogeneity, and random-effects models were employed to calculate combined effect estimation OR with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Pooled analysis was completed using Stata 15.0. RESULTS: According to this meta-analysis, a 10% increase in the proportion of green space was linked to a lower risk of depression (merged OR (95% CI) = 0.963 (0.948, 0.979)) and anxiety (merged OR (95% CI) = 0.938 (0.858, 1.025)) and a 0.1 unit increase in NDVI was linked to a lower risk of depression (merged OR (95% CI) = 0.931 (0.887, 0.977)). CONCLUSIONS: Results of this meta-analysis supported improving green space exposure in preventing depression and anxiety. Higher green space exposure might be helpful for depression and anxiety disorders. Therefore, improving or preserving green space should be regarded as a promising intervention for public health.

Previous studies have found several biomarkers for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but the accuracy of most biomarkers is still in doubt due to the occurrence of other comorbidities. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to explore ideal ARDS biomarkers which can reflect pathophysiology features precisely and better identify at-risk patients and predict mortality. Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, OVID, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched for studies assessing the reliability of pulmonary-originated epithelial proteins in ARDS. A total of 32 studies appeared eligible for meta-analysis, including 2654 ARDS/ALI patients in this study. In the at-risk patients' identification group, the highest pooled effect size was observed in Krebs von den Lungren-6 (KL-6) (SMD: 1.17 [95% CI: 0.55, 1.79]), followed by club cell proteins 16 (CC16) (SMD: 0.74 [95% CI: 0.01, 1.46]), and surfactant proteins-D (SP-D) (SMD: 0.71 [95% CI: 0.57, 0.84]). For the mortality prediction group, CC16 exhibited the largest effect size with SMD of 0.92 (95% CI: 0.42, 1.43). Meanwhile, the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) of CC16 for ARDS diagnosis reached an AUC of 0.80 (95% CI: 0.76, 0.83). In conclusion, this study provides a ranking system for pulmonary-originated epithelial biomarkers according to their association with distinguishing at-risk patients and predicting mortality. In addition, the study provides evidence for the advantage of biomarkers over traditional diagnostic criteria. The performance of biomarkers may help to clinically improve the ARDS diagnosis and mortality prediction.

Phthalates are common endocrine disruptors. The placental barrier can be crossed by phthalates and may have a negative impact on the health of the fetus. However, the association between prenatal exposure to phthalates and birth size is still debatable. Here, we performed this meta-analysis to assess the relationship between prenatal phthalates exposure and birth size. Eighteen studies were finally included by searching PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Ovid, and Web of Science databases and standardized regression coefficients and standard errors were used to pool effect size. Our results showed that prenatal exposure to MMP (=-0.04, 95%CI: -0.08, -0.01) and MEP (=-0.01, 95%CI: -0.01, -0.002) was significantly associated with birth weight. However, no significant associations were identified for phthalate exposure with birth length, head circumference and chest circumference. Because the limiting of studies, more high-quality case-control studies or cohort studies are urgently needed to draw the best conclusions.

Ambient air pollution is one of the major global risk factors for cardiovascular health, and coagulation changes have been proposed to mediate this risk. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), von Willebrand factor (vWF), soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) and tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) are major coagulation biomarkers. However, there has been no systematic meta-analysis to summarize associations of ambient air pollution with these coagulation biomarkers. To assess the overall associations between ambient particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and major coagulation biomarkers including PAI-1, vWF, sP-selectin and t-PA based on the existing epidemiological research. We performed a systematic literature search of publications reporting the associations of ambient air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, and CO) with coagulation biomarkers (PAI-1, vWF, sP-selectin and t-PA) in PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Scopus databases as of April 5, 2022. Then, we performed a random-effect meta-analysis, which included 27 articles, and then identified the potential sources of heterogeneity. The pooled percent changes of coagulation biomarkers per 10 µg/m3 increase in short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 were 2.43% (95% CI: 0.59%, 4.29%) in PAI-1, 1.08% (95% CI: 0.21%, 1.96%) in vWF and 1.14% (95% CI: 0.59%, 1.68%) in sP-selectin, respectively. We also found significant associations of short-term exposure to ambient O3 with PAI-1 (1.62%, 95% CI: 0.01%, 3.25%), sP-selectin (9.59%, 95% CI:2.78%, 16.86%) and t-PA (0.45%, 95% CI: 0.02%, 0.88%), respectively. Short-term exposures to ambient PM10, NO2 and CO were not significantly associated with changes in coagulation biomarkers. In conclusion, short-term exposures to PM2.5 and O3 are associated with significant increases in coagulation biomarkers, suggesting an activated coagulation state upon air pollution exposure.

The associations between particulate matter (PM) exposure, psychosocial stress and blood cell parameters are bringing novel insights to characterize the early damage of multiple diseases. Based on two studies conducted in three Chinses cities using cross-sectional (Beijing, 425 participants) and panel study (Tianjin and Shanghai, 92 participants with 361 repeated measurements) designs, this study explored the associations between short-term exposure to ambient PM and blood cell parameters, and the effect modification by psychosocial stress. Increasing PM2.5 exposure was significantly associated with decreases in red blood cell (RBC) count and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and increases in mean corpuscular volume (MCV), platelets count (PLT) and platelet hematocrit (PCT) in both studies. For instance, a 10 µg/m3 increment in PM2.5 concentration was associated with a 1.04% (95%CI: 0.16%, 1.92%) increase in PLT (4-d) and a 1.09% (95%CI: 0.31%, 1.87%) increase in PCT (4-d) in the cross-sectional study, and a 0.64% (95%CI: 0.06%, 1.22%) increase in PLT (1-d) and a 0.72% (95%CI: 0.33%, 1.11%) increase in PCT (1-d) in the panel study, respectively. In addition, stronger increases in MCV, PLT, and PCT associated with PM2.5 exposure were found in higher psychosocial stress group compared to lower psychosocial stress group (p for interaction <0.10), indicating that blood cell parameters of individuals with higher psychosocial stress might be more susceptible to the early damages of PM2.5 exposure.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ambient particulate air pollution contributes substantially to the mortality and morbidity due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), respiratory diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. Several hypothetical mechanisms have been proposed to explain these associations, particularly oxidative stress. Malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) are typical biomarkers of oxidative stress and have been frequently investigated. However, the association between exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) and these biomarkers has not been well established. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the association between ambient particulate air pollution and biomarkers of oxidative stress based on existing epidemiological studies. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in databases of Science Direct, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus up to April 24, 2020 to summarize epidemiological studies reporting the association between exposure to ambient PM (PM2.5, PM10, or both) and biomarkers of oxidative stress, and a meta-analysis was performed for the associations reported in individual studies using a random-effect model. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included 23 epidemiological studies (13 identified for 8-OHdG, 11 identified for MDA and 5 identified for SOD). A 10 µg/m3 increase in short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 was associated with pooled percent changes of 2.10% (95% CIs: -0.13%, 4.38%), 1.60% (95% CIs: 0.21%, 3.01%) and -0.61% (95% CIs: -1.92%, 0.72%) in 8-OHdG, MDA and SOD, respectively. CONCLUSION: Short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 was associated with a significantly increased level of MDA, indicating that ambient particulate air pollution may contribute to increased oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Some recent studies examined the effect of ambient particulate matter (PM) pollution on depression and suicide. However, the results have been inconclusive.AimsTo determine the overall relationship between PM exposure and depression/suicide in the general population. METHOD: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-crossover and cohort studies to assess the association between PM2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less) or PM10 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter between 2.5 and 10 µm) exposure and depression/suicide. RESULTS: A total of 14 articles (7 for depression and 7 for suicide) with data from 684 859 participants were included in the meta-analysis. With a 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 we found a 19% (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.19 [1.07, 1.33]) increased risk of depression and a marginally increased risk of suicide (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.05 [0.99, 1.11]) in the general population. We did not observe any significant associations between increasing exposure to PM10 and depression/suicide. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were used to determine the robustness of results. The strongest estimated effect of depression associated with PM2.5 appeared in a long-term lag pattern (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.25 [1.07, 1.45], P < 0.01) and cumulative lag pattern (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.26 [1.07, 1.48], P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis suggested that an increase in ambient PM2.5 concentration was strongly associated with increased depression risk in the general population, and the association appeared stronger at long-term lag and cumulative lag patterns, suggesting a potential cumulative exposure effect over time.Declaration of interestNone.

Air pollution control protocols and policies formulated for PM2.5 and PM10 (particulate matter [PM] with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 and 10 µm), however, such protocols and policies have not been available for black carbon (BC). A growing number of studies have evaluated the association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution with BC and PM and pre-eclampsia. We applied a meta-analysis to estimate pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) based on four exposure windows (first/second/third trimester and entire pregnancy). 24 studies meeting our selection criteria (8 for BC, 21 and 15 for PM2.5 and PM10) were finally included after screening studies published up to June 22, 2023. An increase of 1 µg/m3 BC during the second trimester and entire pregnancy were associated with a 16 % (OR: 1.16, 95 % CI: [1.02, 1.32]) and a 15 % (OR: 1.15, 95 % CI: [1.03, 1.29]) increased risk of pre-eclampsia, respectively. A 10 µg/m3 increase in second-trimester exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 was associated with a 1 % (OR: 1.01, 95 % CI: [1.00, 1.03]) and a 5 % (OR: 1.05, 95 % CI: [1.01, 1.10]) increased risk of pre-eclampsia. An 11 % (OR: 1.11, 95 % CI: [1.03, 1.21]) increased risk of pre-eclampsia was found to be associated with a 10 µg/m3 increase in PM10 exposure during the entire pregnancy. The results support the potential effect of exposure to ambient particulate pollutants on risk of pre-eclampsia and emphasize the necessity of strategies and protocols for controlling BC. Greater efforts in controlling ambient particulate pollution and especially BC are needed in order to prevent pregnant women from developing pre-eclampsia.

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular diseases caused by ambient particulate air pollution is universal. An increasing number of studies have investigated the potential effects of exposure to particulate air pollution on endothelial function, which is one of the important mechanisms for the onset and development of cardiovascular disease. However, no previous study has conducted a summary analysis of the potential effects of particulate air pollution on endothelial function. OBJECTIVES: To summarize the evidence for the potential effects of short-term exposure to ambient particulate air pollution on endothelial function based on existing studies. METHODS: A systematic literature search on the relationship between ambient particulate air pollution and biomarkers of endothelial function including endothelin-1 (ET-1), E-selectin, intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science up to 20 May 2023. Subsequently, a meta-analysis was conducted using a random effects model. RESULTS: A total of 18 studies were included in this meta-analysis. A 10 µg/m3 increase in short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 was associated with a 1.55% (95% CI: 0.89%, 2.22%) increase in ICAM-1 and a 1.97% (95% CI: 0.86%, 3.08%) increase in VCAM-1. The associations of ET-1 (0.22%, 95% CI: -4.94%, 5.65%) and E-selectin (3.21%, 95% CI: -0.90% 7.49%) with short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 were statistically insignificant. CONCLUSION: Short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 pollution may significantly increase the levels of typical markers of endothelial function, including ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, suggesting potential endothelial dysfunction following ambient air pollution exposure.

The complicated food matrix seriously limits the one-time test for the potential food hazards in non-targeted analysis. Accordingly, developing advanced sample pretreatment strategy to reduce matrix effects is of great significance. Herein, newly-integrated hollow-structured covalent organic frameworks (HCOFs) with large internal adsorption capacity and target-matched pore size were synthesized via etching the core-shell structured COFs. The as-prepared HCOFs could be directly applied for matrix clean-up of vegetable samples, while further modification of polydopamine (PDA) network facilitated application for animal samples. Both HCOFs and HCOFs@PDA with the comparable sizes to the matrix interference gave excellent adsorption performance to targets, achieving satisfied recoveries (70%-120%) toward 90 pesticides and 44 veterinary drugs in one-test, respectively. This work showed the great potential of the facile-integrated HCOFs with high stability and customized size to remove interference matrix and offered a universal strategy to achieve simultaneous screening of hazards with considerable quantity in high-throughput non-targeted analysis.

BACKGROUND: The potential effects of short-term exposure to major ambient gaseous pollutants (ozone: O3, carbon monoxide: CO, and sulfur dioxide: SO2) on platelet mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) methylation have been uncertain and no studies have examined whether platelet mtDNA methylation levels could modify the associations between ambient gaseous pollutants and the risks of ST-segment depression (STDE) and T-wave inversion events (TIE), two indicators of myocardial ischemia. METHODS: This study used data from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study with a standardized 24-hour exposure protocol among 110 participants in Beijing. Absolute changes in platelet mtDNA methylation (ACmtDNAm) levels were determined by two repeated measurements on platelet mtDNA methylation levels in blood samples collected before and after the 24-hour exposure period. A multivariable linear regression model and a generalized linear model with a Poisson link function were used to investigate the associations of ambient gaseous pollutants with platelet mtDNA methylation levels, STDE, and TIE, respectively. RESULTS: Short-term O3 exposure was significantly associated with decreased ACmtDNAm at ATP6_P1 but increased ACmtDNAm at mt12sRNA, MT-COX1, and MT-COX1_P2; short-term CO and SO2 exposures were significantly associated with decreased ACmtDNAm at D-loop, MT-COX3- and ATP-related genes. Moreover, short-term O3 exposure was significantly associated with increased risks of STDE and TIE, and ACmtDNAm at MT-COX1 and MT-COX1_P2 modified the association between short-term O3 exposure and STDE events. L-Arg supplementation attenuated the effects of ambient gaseous pollutants, particularly O3, on ACmtDNAm and STDE. CONCLUSIONS: Platelet mtDNA methylation levels are promising biomarkers of short-term exposure to ambient gaseous air pollution, and are likely implicated in the mechanism behind the association of ambient O3 pollution with adverse cardiovascular effects. L-Arg supplementation showed the potential to mitigate the adverse effects of ambient O3 pollution.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence has demonstrated the benefits of greenness exposure on human health, while conflicts remain unsolved in issue of adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: Utilizing data from project ELEFANT spanning the years 2011 to 2021, we assessed residential greenness using the NDVI from MODIS data and residential PM2.5 exposure level from CHAP data. Our primary concerns were PTD, LBW, LGA, and SGA. Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to examine the association of residential greenness and air pollution exposure with risk of adverse birth outcomes. We performed mediation and modification effect analyses between greenness and air pollutant. RESULTS: We identified 61,762 mother­neonatal pairs in final analysis. For per 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration during entire pregnancy was associated with 19.8 % and 20.7 % increased risk of PTD and LGA. In contrast, we identified that an 0.1 unit increment in NDVI were associated with 24 %, 43 %, 26.5 %, and 39.5 % lower risk for PTD, LBW, LGA, and SGA, respectively. According to mediation analysis, NDVI mediated 7.70 % and 7.89 % of the associations between PM2.5 and PTD and LGA. Residential greenness could reduce the risk of PTD among mothers under 35 years old, living in rural areas, primigravidae and primiparity.. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our results highlighted the potential of residential greenness to mitigate the risk of adverse birth outcomes, while also pointing to the adverse impact of PM2.5 on increased risk of multiple adverse birth outcomes (PTD and LGA). The significant mediation effect of NDVI emphasizes its potential as an important protective factor of PM2.5 exposure. Additionally, the identification of susceptible subgroups can inform targeted interventions to reduce adverse birth outcomes related to air pollution and lack of green spaces. Further research and understanding of these associations can contribute to better public health strategies aimed at promoting healthier pregnancies and birth outcomes.

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is emerging as a risk factor for obesity, but with conflicting findings. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate and summarize the current evidence towards the associations between PAHs exposure and risk of obesity. We conducted a systematic search of online databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to April 28, 2022. Eight cross-sectional studies with data from 68,454 participants were included. The present study illustrated that there was a significant positive association between naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHEN), and total OH-PAH metabolites and risk of obesity, the pooled OR (95% CI) was estimated at 1.43 (1.07, 1.90), 1.54 (1.18, 2.02), and 2.29 (1.32, 3.99), respectively. However, there was no significant association between fluorene (FLUO) and1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) metabolite and risk of obesity. Subgroup analyses showed that associations between PAHs exposure and risk of obesity were more apparent in children, female, smokers and developing regions.

Advanced lipoxidation end products (ALEs) are formed by modifying proteins with lipid oxidation products. The health effects of ALEs formed in vivo have been extensively studied. However, the digestibility, safety, and health risk of ALEs in heat-processed foods remain unclear. This investigation was performed to determine the structure, digestibility, and effect on the mice liver of dietary ALEs. The results showed that malondialdehyde (MDA) was able to alter the structure of myofibrillar proteins (MPs) to form linear, loop, and cross-linked types of Schiff bases and dihydropyridine derivatives under simulated heat processing, leading to the intra- and intermolecular aggregation of MPs and, thus, reducing the digestibility of MPs. In addition, dietary ALE intake resulted in abnormal liver function and lipid accumulation in mice. The core reason for these adverse effects was the destructive effect of ALEs on the intestinal barrier. Because the damage to the intestinal barrier leads to an increase in lipopolysaccharide levels in the liver, it induces liver damage by modulating hepatic lipid metabolism.

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are endocrine disrupting chemicals that may cause breast cancer. However, there lacks consistent research on the association between TCDD, PFAS exposure, and breast cancer. To this end, a meta-analysis was carried out in this review to explore the relationship between these two endocrine disruptors and breast cancer. Relevant literature was searched from 5 databases: Medline, Scopus, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled by fixed-effects and random-effects meta-analysis models. A total of 17 publications were finally included for quantitative evaluation. Meta-analysis showed that TCDD (OR = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.89-1.12, I2 = 39.3%, P = 0.144), PFOA (OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 0.84-1.38, I2 = 85.9%, P < 0.001), PFOS (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.95-1.08, I2 = 65.7%, P < 0.001), PFNA (OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.67-1.19, I2 = 74.4%, P < 0.001), and PFHxS (OR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.72-1.13, I2 = 74%, P < 0.001) were not significantly correlated with breast cancer. Internal exposure, however, showed a significant positive correlation between TCDD and BC (OR = 2.85, 95% CI = 1.23-6.59, I2 = 0.0%, P = 0.882). No statistically significant association between TCDD, PFAS exposure, and breast cancer was observed in this meta-analysis.

Nanotechnology, biotechniques, and chemical engineering have arisen as new trends with significant impacts on agrofood science development. Advanced analytical techniques with high sensitivity, specificity, and automation based on micro-/nanomaterials for food hazard elimination have become leading research hotspots in agrofood science. Research progress in micro-/nanomaterials has provided a solid theoretical basis and technical support to solve problems in the industry. However, the rapid development of micro-/nanostructures has also raised concerns regarding potential risks to human health. This review presents the latest advances in the precise inspection and elimination of food hazards from micro-/nanomaterials and discusses the potential threats to human health posed by nanomaterials. The theoretical reference was provided for the application trend of micro-/nanomaterials in the field of agrofood science in the future.

Convincing evidence has suggested the health potentials of oolong tea (OT) on gut microbiota homeostasis; however, limited population-based studies exist regarding the effect of OT consumption on human gut microbial and metabolic profile. This pilot study explored gut microbial and metabolic changes in healthy adults with a 3-week oolong tea intake. Our findings showed that OT treatment significantly altered gut microbial diversity (Shannon index, 5.4±0.1 vs. 5.7±0.1 pre- and post-OT treatment), reorganized gut microbiota composition, enriched Bacteroides and Prevotella, decreased Megamonas, and improved gastrointestinal function. Also, gut microbes from overweight subjects with BMI >23.9 exhibited greater responses to OT treatment compared with normal-weight counterparts. Metabolomic analysis identified OT intake-induced 23 differential metabolites and 10 enriched metabolic pathways. This study may provide new insights into the association among OT intervention, host gut microbiome and metabolic profile, and improve the knowledge of clinical strategies and personalized nutrition.
