RESUMO

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a large, double-stranded DNA virus that causes a fatal disease in pigs, posing a threat to the global pig industry. Whereas some ASFV proteins have been found to play important roles in ASFV-host interaction, the functional roles of many proteins are still largely unknown. In this study, we identified I73R, an early viral gene in the replication cycle of ASFV, as a key virulence factor. Our findings demonstrate that pI73R suppresses the host innate immune response by broadly inhibiting the synthesis of host proteins, including antiviral proteins. Crystallization and structural characterization results suggest that pI73R is a nucleic-acid-binding protein containing a Zα domain. It localizes in the nucleus and inhibits host protein synthesis by suppressing the nuclear export of cellular messenger RNA (mRNAs). While pI73R promotes viral replication, the deletion of the gene showed that it is a nonessential gene for virus replication. In vivo safety and immunogenicity evaluation results demonstrate that the deletion mutant ASFV-GZΔI73R is completely nonpathogenic and provides effective protection to pigs against wild-type ASFV. These results reveal I73R as a virulence-related gene critical for ASFV pathogenesis and suggest that it is a potential target for virus attenuation. Accordingly, the deletion mutant ASFV-GZΔI73R can be a potent live-attenuated vaccine candidate.

RESUMO

The prostate is a vital accessory gonad in the mammalian male reproductive system. With the ever-increasing proportion of the population over 60 years of age worldwide, the incidence of prostate diseases, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa), is on the rise and is gradually becoming a significant medical problem globally. The notch signaling pathway is essential in regulating prostate early development. However, the potential regulatory mechanism of Notch signaling in prostatic enlargement and hyperplasia remains unclear. In this study, we proved that overactivation of Notch1 signaling in mouse prostatic epithelial cells (OEx) led to prostatic enlargement via enhancing proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis of prostatic epithelial cells. Further study showed that N1ICD/RBPJ directly up-regulated the androgen receptor (AR) and enhanced prostatic sensitivity to androgens. Hyper-proliferation was not found in orchidectomized OEx mice without androgen supply but was observed after Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) supplementation. Our data showed that the number of mitochondrion in prostatic epithelial cells of OEx mice was increased, but the mitochondrial function was impaired, and the essential activity of the mitochondrial respiratory electron transport chain was significantly weakened. Disordered mitochondrial number and metabolic function further resulted in excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Importantly, anti-oxidant N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) therapy could alleviate prostatic hyperplasia caused by the over-activation of Notch1 signaling. Furthermore, we observed the incremental Notch signaling activity in progenitor-like club cells in the scRNA-seq data set of human BPH patients. Moreover, the increased number of TROP2+ progenitors and Club cells was also confirmed in our OEx mice. In conclusion, our study revealed that over-activated Notch1 signaling induces prostatic enlargement by increasing androgen receptor sensitivity, disrupting cellular mitochondrial metabolism, increasing ROS, and a higher number of progenitor cells, all of which can be effectively rescued by NAC treatment.

RESUMO

Seawater electrolysis is a promising but challenging strategy to generate carbon-neutral hydrogen. A grand challenge for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from alkaline seawater electrolysis is the development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts to overcome the limitation of sluggish kinetics. Here, a 3D nanorod hybrid catalyst is reported, which comprises heterostructure MoO2@NiMoO4 supported Ru nanoparticles (Ru/ MoO2@NiMoO4) with a size of ≈5 nm. Benefitting from the effect of strongly coupled interaction, Ru/MoO2@NiMoO4 catalyst exhibits a remarkable alkaline seawater hydrogen evolution performance, featured by a low overpotential of 184 mV at a current density of 1.0 A cm-2, superior to commercial Pt/C (338 mV). Experimental observations demonstrate that the heterostructure MoO2@NiMoO4 as an electron-accepting support makes the electron transfer from the Ru nanoparticles to MoO2, and thereby implements the electron redistribution of Ru site. Mechanistic analysis elucidates that the electron redistribution of active Ru site enhances the ability of hydrogen desorption, thereby promoting alkaline seawater HER kinetics and finally leading to a satisfactory catalysis performance at ampere-level current density of alkaline seawater electrolysis.

RESUMO

Giardiasis is a common waterborne zoonotic disease caused by Giardia intestinalis. Upon infection, Giardia releases excretory and secretory products (ESPs) including secreted proteins (SPs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs). Although the interplay between ESPs and intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) has been previously described, the functions of EVs in these interactions and their differences from those of SPs require further exploration. In the present study, EVs and EV-depleted SPs were isolated from Giardia ESPs. Proteomic analyses of isolated SPs and EVs showed 146 and 91 proteins, respectively. Certain unique and enriched proteins have been identified in SPs and EVs. Transcriptome analysis of Caco-2 cells exposed to EVs showed 96 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with 56 upregulated and 40 downregulated genes. Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) indicated that Caco-2 genes related to metabolic processes, the HIF-1 signaling pathway, and the cAMP signaling pathway were affected. This study provides new insights into host-parasite interactions, highlighting the potential significance of EVs on IECs during infections.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) are critical regulators of the biological activities of insulin-like growth factors. The IGFBP family plays diverse roles in different types of cancer, which we still lack comprehensive and pleiotropic understandings so far. METHODS: Multi-source and multi-dimensional data, extracted from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Oncomine, Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE), and the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) was used for bioinformatics analysis by R language. Immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR were performed to validate the results of the database analysis results. Bibliometrics and literature review were used for summarizing the research progress of IGFBPs in the field of tumor. RESULTS: The members of IGFBP gene family are differentially expressed in various cancer types. IGFBPs expression can affect prognosis of different cancers. The expression of IGFBPs expression is associated with multiple signal transduction pathways. The expression of IGFBPs is significantly correlated with tumor mutational burden, microsatellite instability, tumor stemness and tumor immune microenvironment. The qRT-PCR experiments verified the lower expression of IGFBP2 and IGFBP6 in gastric cancer and the lower expression of IGFBP6 in colorectal cancer. Immunohistochemistry validated a marked downregulation of IGFBP2 protein in gastric cancer tissues. The keywords co-occurrence analysis of IGFBP related publications in cancer showed relative research have been more concentrating on the potential of IGFBPs as tumor diagnostic and prognostic markers and developing cancer therapies. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide frontier trend of IGFBPs related research and new clues for identifying novel therapeutic targets for various cancers.

RESUMO

Bovine gammaherpesvirus 4 (BoHV-4) is a common virus detected in bovine with respiratory disease worldwide. In this study, we identified and characterized a novel BoHV-4 strain, referred as HB-ZJK, in vaginal swabs collected from cattle in China, 2022. The long unique region (LUR) of HB-ZJK is 10,9811 bp in length. It shares 99.17% to 99.38% nucleotide identity to five BoHV-4 strains available in GenBank and the highest similarity was seen with BoHV-4V. test (JN133502.1) strain (99.38%). Mutations, insertions or deletions were observed mainly in HB-ZJK gB (ORF8), TK (ORF21), gH (ORF22), MCP (ORF25), PK (ORF36), gM (ORF39), and gL (ORF47) genes compared to its genomic coordinates. Phylogenetic analyses of gB and TK genes showed that HB-ZJK clustered with China 512 (2019), B6010 (2009), and J4034 (2009) strains, demonstrating that the isolated HB-ZJK belongs to genotype 1. This is the first report that has revealed a comprehensive genome profile of BoHV-4 strain in China. This study will provide foundation for epidemiological investigations of BoHV-4 and contribute to the molecular and pathogenic studies of BoHV-4.

RESUMO

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is highly contagious and can cause lethal disease in pigs. ASFV p72 protein is a major capsid protein that presents as trimer in the virion. Epitopes on the surface of p72 trimer are considered as protective antigens. In this study, recombinant p72 protein and p72-baculovirus were constructed and obtained. Three monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific to ASFV p72 protein, designated as 1A3, 2B5 and 4A5, were generated. Among them, 4A5 showed strong reactivity with ASFV infected cells. Subsequently, the epitope recognized by 4A5 was mapped and identified using a series of overlapping peptides generated from p72 protein. IFA and western blot analyses showed that 4A5 recognized the linear epitope of p72 monomer located between amino acids 245-285 and recognized the conformational epitope located at the surface and top of the p72 trimer. These findings will enrich our knowledge regarding the epitope on p72 protein and provide valuable information for further characterization of the antigenicity and molecular functions of p72 protein.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the endoscopic release superficially rather than deep to the transverse carpal ligament to reduce the incidence of transient symptomatic exacerbation and postoperative absence from work in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. METHODS: From January 2012 to January 2018, patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome who underwent one-portal endoscopic release superficial to the transverse carpal ligament (ERSTCL) were analyzed. For comparison, a cohort treated with the conventional Chow endoscopic release between February 2008 and October 2013 were included. Transient worsening of symptoms, discrimination sensation, and days off work were assessed. The minimal clinically important difference was calculated for discrimination sensation. Severity of symptom and functional status also were assessed using the Levine-Katz Questionnaire. Significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the ERSTCL group and the control group regarding the incidence of symptomatic exacerbation 1 week after surgery (2% vs 9%; P = .003) but no difference in other time intervals within the initial 3 months. There was a significant difference in 2-point discrimination 1 week (mean change = -0.13, 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.30 to 0.04, P = .01) and 2 weeks after surgery (mean change = -0.18, 95% CI -0.36 to -0.01, P = .033). Postoperative 1 and 2 weeks, 28% and 35% patients in ERSTCL group achieved a minimal clinically important difference, respectively. Compared with control group, the difference in frequencies was statistically significant (28% vs 45%; P = .027; 35% vs 57%; P = .015). The difference between the 2 groups in postoperative absence from work was statistically significant (95% CI 1.083-4.724; P = .002), with an average reduction in sick leave of 3 days in ERSTCL group. At a mean follow-up of 3 years, no significant difference was found between the groups regarding symptom and function statuses. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic release superficial rather than deep to transverse carpal ligament for carpal tunnel syndrome improves immediate postoperative transient symptomatic exacerbation, which allows the patients to return to work earlier. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, retrospective comparative study.

RESUMO

Flax is an important cash crop globally with a variety of commercial uses. It has been widely used for fiber, oil, nutrition, feed and in composite materials. Growth regulatory factor (GRF) is a transcription factor family unique to plants, and is involved in regulating many processes of growth and development. Bioinformatics analysis of the GRF family in flax predicted 17 LuGRF genes, which all contained the characteristic QLQ and WRC domains. Equally, 15 of 17 LuGRFs (88%) are predicted to be regulated by lus-miR396 miRNA. Phylogenetic analysis of GRFs from flax and several other well-characterized species defined five clades; LuGRF genes were found in four clades. Most LuGRF gene promoters contained cis-regulatory elements known to be responsive to hormones and stress. The chromosomal locations and collinearity of LuGRF genes were also analyzed. The three-dimensional structure of LuGRF proteins was predicted using homology modeling. The transcript expression data indicated that most LuGRF family members were highly expressed in flax fruit and embryos, whereas LuGRF3, LuGRF12 and LuGRF16 were enriched in response to salt stress. Real-time quantitative fluorescent PCR (qRT-PCR) showed that both LuGRF1 and LuGRF11 were up-regulated under ABA and MeJA stimuli, indicating that these genes were involved in defense. LuGRF1 was demonstrated to be localized to the nucleus as expected for a transcription factor. These results provide a basis for further exploration of the molecular mechanism of LuGRF gene function and obtaining improved flax breeding lines.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Active and smart food packaging based on natural polymers and pH-sensitive dyes as indicators has attracted widespread attention. In the present study, an antioxidant and amine-response color indicator film was developed by incorporating bilirubin (BIL) into the κ-carrageenan (Carr) matrix. RESULTS: It was found that the introduction of BIL had no effect on the crystal/chemical structure, water sensitivity and mechanical performance of the Carr-based films. However, the barrier properties to light and the thermal stability were significantly improved after the addition BIL. The Carr/BIL composite films exhibited excellent 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (i.e. DPPH)/2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (i.e. ABTS) free radical scavenging abilities and color responsiveness to different concentrations of ammonia. The application assay reflected that the Carr/BIL0.0075 film was effective in delaying the oxidative deterioration of shrimp during storage and realizing the color response of its freshness through the change of b* value. CONCLUSION: Active and smart packaging films were successfully prepared by incorporating different contents of BIL into the Carr matrix. The present study helps to further encourage the design and development of a multi-functional packaging material. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory, estrogen-dependent gynecological disease characterized by the growth of endometrial stromal cells and glands outside the uterine cavity in response to hormones, which commonly occurs in reproductive-age women. Zearalenone (ZEA) is a toxic metabolite produced by Fusarium, which acts as estrogen activity because of the similarity of its structure to estrogen. In this study, we used an endometriosis mouse model: 15 days after ovariectomy, endometrial fragments were sutured on the pelvic wall, and exogenous estrogen was supplied using an estrogen-releasing silicone tube embedded subcutaneously. Mice were treated with different doses of ZEA by gavage for 21 days. The results show that ZEA significantly inhibited the growth of ectopic endometrium in a dose-dependent manner. The proliferation of cells decreased while apoptosis increased in the ectopic tissues of ZEA-treated mice compared to the vehicle group. The expression of estrogen receptor-α and its downstream targets MUC1 and p-AKT decreased, indicating an impaired estrogen signaling activity by ZEA treatment. In addition, the decreased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine Tnf-α, Il-1ß, and Il-6, the lower number of macrophages and neutrophils cells, and the inhibited NF-κB signaling pathway suggest the inflammatory response in the ectopic endometrium was also suppressed by ZEA treatment. However, when the exogenous estrogen supply is removed, ZEA, in turn, plays an estrogen-like role that promotes cell proliferation in the ectopic endometrium. In summary, our data suggest ZEA acts as an antagonist in endometriotic tissue when estrogen is sufficient but turns to estrogenic activity in the absence of estrogen in the development of endometriosis. ZEA also inhibits ectopic tissue growth by inhibiting inflammatory response in the endometriosis model.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Antioxidant activity has been found in fermented fish sauce. In this experiment, the properties of endogenous protease and antioxidant activity were studied in anchovy sauce during fermentation. The correlation between protease activity and antioxidant activity in fermented anchovy sauce was analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) method. RESULTS: The results showed that at least four proteases were present in the endogenous enzyme solution, and the optimum pH values were 2.5, 5.5, 9.0, and 12.5, respectively. The maximum inhibition rate of endogenous protease, from high to low, was: serine protease inhibitor > trypsin inhibitor > aspartic protease inhibitor (pepsin inhibitor) > cysteine protease inhibitor > metalloprotease inhibitor. At the sixth month of fermentation, fish sauce had stronger trypsin, pepsin-like activity, and antioxidant activity. At the ninth month of fermentation, the cathepsin activity was greater. A model correlating changes in protease activity with antioxidant activity suggested that the trypsin and serine protease were the main factors affecting antioxidant activity. CONCLUSION: This study reports a model correlating changes in protease activity with the antioxidant activity of fish sauce. It lays a foundation for further exploration of the formation of antioxidant substances and antioxidant effects during the process of fish sauce fermentation. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The production of excess free zinc ions (Zn2+) in cells has been identified as an important cause of cell injury or apoptosis after ischemia reperfusion. Thus, developing a nanosystem with multiple therapeutic functions to significantly eliminate multiple cell injury factors is of great interest. Here, a super-assembled nanosystem consisting of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) surface-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) encapsulating 2-methylimidazole (2MI) and a Zn2+ probe (PZn) was fabricated. The 2MI-P@MSN nanoassemblies showed a "turn-on" fluorescence signal at 476 nm toward zinc ions due to the presence of PZn. Besides, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) could be assembled on the site intracellularly after 2MI chelating with free zinc ions. The experimental results revealed that 2MI-P@MSN exhibited excellent biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity, and was able to provide satisfactory protection to OGD/R-treated cells based on zinc ion adsorption and the antioxidant effect of ZIF-8, which could effectively improve the survival rate of reperfusion injury cells from 52% to 73%. Notably, selective and quantitative sensing of Zn2+ was successfully carried out in the cells. This strategy highlights the potential of the detection, absorption and assembly of excess zinc ions simultaneously for cell therapy, which provides a promising therapeutic method for ischemic stroke, oxidative damage and diseases associated with zinc ion accumulation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study examines the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and the prevalence of hypertension among elderly individuals in rural Southwest China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 4833 consenting adults aged ≥ 60 years in rural regions of Yunnan Province, China, was conducted in 2017. Data on individual socioeconomic status, sleep quality, physical activity level, and family history of hypertension were collected with a standardized questionnaire. Blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, height, weight, and waist circumference were also measured. An individual socioeconomic position (SEP) index was constructed using principal component analysis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was applied to analyse the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and the prevalence of hypertension. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of hypertension was 50.6% in the study population. Body fat distribution, including measures of obesity and central obesity, had the greatest total effect on hypertension (0.21), followed by family history of hypertension (0.14), biological sex (0.08), sleep quality (- 0.07), SEP (- 0.06), physical inactivity (0.06), and diabetes (0.06). Body fat distribution, SEP, and family history of hypertension had both direct and indirect effects on hypertension, whereas physical inactivity, diabetes, and sleep quality were directly associated with the prevalence of hypertension. Biological sex was indirectly associated with the prevalence of hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: SEP, body fat distribution, physical inactivity, diabetes, and sleep quality critically influence the prevalence of hypertension. Future interventions to prevent and control hypertension should give increased attention to individuals with low SEP and should focus on controlling diabetes and obesity, increasing physical activity levels, and improving quality of sleep among older adults aged ≥ 60 years in rural Southwest China.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is the primary medication in the treatment of pregnancy with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) for its efficacy and safety. However, the effect of HCQ on preeclampsia prevention remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether HCQ has an effect on preeclampsia prevention and other pregnancy outcomes among lupus pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 119 pregnant women with SLE. After the propensity score matching of baseline characteristics, the population was divided into the HCQ treatment group and HCQ nontreatment group. Then, we compared the preeclampsia and other pregnancy outcomes between HCQ treatment and nontreatment groups. Furthermore, we combined our data and previous studies for a meta-analysis. RESULTS: In our data, HCQ did not increase the risk of premature rupture of membranes, bleeding during pregnancy, preeclampsia, intrauterine distress, gestational age at delivery, preterm birth, and postpartum hemorrhage. There was no significant association between HCQ treatment and preeclampsia prevention. Besides, the meta-analysis showed a similar result that HCQ did not significantly decrease the rate of preeclampsia (RR = 0.61, 95%CI = 0.34-1.11). CONCLUSION: This study found that HCQ treatment was safe, but did not significantly reduce preeclampsia among lupus pregnancies.

RESUMO

HPV vaccine can prevent HPV infection effectively. The college student's vaccination status is unclear in mainland China. We assessed the knowledge, practice, and attitude towards HPV vaccine and compared the differences between medical and nonmedical students. It was a cross-sectional study using self-administered anonymous questionnaires. Nine-hundred sixty full-time college students were recruited randomly at Peking University in China. The medical students had higher level of knowledge of HPV and its vaccine than the nonmedical students (p < 0.001). The vaccinated female students were 9.0%. The high-grade clinical students had a higher uptake rate than the nonmedical students (19.5 vs 8.6%, p < 0.05). Awareness of HPV (p < 0.01), awareness of the vaccine (p < 0.001), and vaccinated family members or friends (p < 0.001) were related to the nonmedical students' vaccination. Vaccinated family members or friends were significant predictor for students' vaccination status (p < 0.001). Medical students knew more about HPV and its vaccine than nonmedical students. Female students' vaccinated rate was low, and the high-grade clinical students had a higher uptake rate than the nonmedical students.

RESUMO

Antimonene quantum dots (AMQDs) are attracting considerable attention due to their fascinating physicochemical properties. However, research on their semiconductor characteristics, especially the photoluminescence performance, is still in a preliminary stage and the experimental verification is scarcely reported, significantly restricting their further applications. Herein, the photoluminescence property of AMQDs is experimentally verified. The AMQDs are prepared by probe sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation and show robust blue fluorescence, and the photoluminescence is hardly affected by pH. In view of the derivatization reaction of tetracyclines (TET) at different pHs, AMQDs are developed as a pH-mediated dual-channel ratiometric fluorescent probe for TET detection. Under acidic conditions, the AMQDs' probe exhibits unique recognition behavior due to the inherent fluorescence of TET and the solvent-enhancing effect, that is, the fluorescence changes from blue to red. Under alkaline conditions, this fluorescent probe realizes the transition from blue to yellow-green because of the decomposition of TET. The limits of detection are 27 × 10-9 and 74 × 10-9 m, respectively. The high sensitivity and remarkable fluorescence changes make AMQDs ideal probes for TET sensing. Additionally, this is the first report on the photoluminescence property of AMQDs. It is believed that this work will open a new avenue for AMQDs in optical sensing fields.

RESUMO

In this work, a novel zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composite material, UiO-(OH)2@RhB, has been solvothermally prepared with zirconyl chloride octahydrate, 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid, and rhodamine B (RhB) for ratiometric fluorescence sensing of Al3+ ions in an aqueous medium. The luminescence measurement results showed that, at the single excitation wavelength of 420 nm, the fluorescence intensity of the ligand at 500 nm increased significantly in the case of Al3+, while that of RhB at 583 nm changed slightly, together with an apparent color change. Under optimal conditions, UiO-(OH)2@RhB exhibited an extraordinary sensitivity (10 nM), good selectivity, and a fast response (2 min) for Al3+. As far as we know, the limit of detection is superior to that of the current reported MOF-based Al3+ fluorescence sensors. The response mechanism suggested that -OH could capture Al3+ in water through coordination and high electrostatic affinity and achieved turn-on ratiometric fluorescence through the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer process and stable fluorescence of RhB. In addition, this sensor was also applied to actual food samples (grain beans), with the recoveries ranging from 89.08% to 113.61%. Such a turn-on ratiometric fluorescence sensor will provide a constructive strategy for the ultrasensitive detection of Al3+ in practical applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major and growing cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. However, there remains a limited understanding of the association between individual socioeconomic status (SES) and COPD diagnosis and treatment worldwide, including in China. This study investigates socioeconomic variations in prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of COPD in rural China. METHODS: The present study employed a cross-sectional survey design. The study population was composed of Han majority as well as Na Xi and Bai ethnic minority individuals 35 years of age and older living in Yunnan Province from 2017 to 2019. In total, 7534 individuals consented to participate in the study and complete a structured interview as well as a post-bronchodilator spirometry test. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between individual socioeconomic status variables and the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of COPD. RESULTS: The age-standardized prevalence of COPD in the present study was 14.3%. Prevalence differed by gender: prevalence for men was 17.1%, versus 11.4% for women (P = 0.0001). Overall, levels of diagnosis and treatment of COPD for participants with COPD were 24.2 and 23.1%, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that higher educational levels and good access to medical services was associated with an overall lower risk of COPD (P = 0.032 vs. P = 0.018) as well as a higher probability of COPD diagnosis among those with COPD (P = 0.0001 vs. P = 0.002). Participants with COPD with higher educational levels (P = 0.0001) and higher annual household incomes (P = 0.0001) as well as good access to medical services (P = 0.016) were more likely to receive COPD medications and treatment than their counterparts. While Na Xi and Bai participants had a higher probability of having COPD (P = 0.0001), they had a lower probability of having received a diagnosis or treatment for COPD than Han participants (P = 0.0001 vs. P = 0.0012). CONCLUSIONS: Future interventions to further control COPD and improve diagnosis and treatment should focus on ethnic minority communities, and those with low education levels, low annual household incomes, and poor access to medical services.

RESUMO

A disposable sensor is described for the determination of nitrite. A screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was modified with a 3D lamellar nanocomposite prepared by one-step electrodeposition from dendritic silver nanostructures, reduced graphene oxide, and ß-cyclodextrin. The modified SPCE exhibits high electrocatalytic activity toward nitrite oxidation, typically at a working potential at around 0.76 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Sensitive and selective voltammetric detection of nitrite is demonstrated. The linear range extends from 1 to 2000 µM, the detection limit is 0.24 µM, and the sensitivity is 585.7 µA mM-1 cm-2. The method was applied to the determination of nitrite in (spiked) pickles.
