RESUMO

The mud-dauber wasp genus Sceliphron Klug (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) is reviewed, with six species and six subspecies reported from various parts of India. The Palaerctic species, S. destillatorium (Illiger), is recorded for the first time from the Indian subcontinent. The subspecies S. madraspatanum formosanum van der Vecht is also recorded for first time from the Indian subcontinent. The distribution records of species and subspecies within various states of India are augmented. A modified key to the species of Sceliphron occurring in India is provided. Intraspecific variation within nominal species is discussed.

RESUMO

The anti-diarrheal activity of methanol extract of dried bark and aerial parts of Litsea polyantha (MELP) has been evaluated in mice using different models (castor oil-induced diarrhea and propulsive gut motility in mice). MELP (50, 75, 100 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly (P<0.01) reduced the onset of diarrhea, fecal excretion and also showed a significant (P<0.001) reduction in gastrointestinal motility on charcoal meal test in mice. The results of the study support the folklore use of the plant for diarrheal remedies.

RESUMO

The suitability of the second derivative method for locating component peaks in complex thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves has been investigated in this work by considering both numerically simulated and experimental TL peaks. This technique is useful to acquire knowledge of the number of component peaks in a complex TL curve which in turn serves as a basic information before applying the deconvolution technique to the glow curve. To check the consistency of the results so obtained, we have also applied the first derivative technique to TL glow curves. It is well-known that kinetic order formalism fails for saturated TL peaks with heavy retrapping. Such peaks are usually broad and, to the best of our knowledge, have not yet been observed experimentally. The present derivative technique has been used to detect whether such broad peaks are truly single or not by considering a number of numerically simulated saturated glow curves with heavy retrapping where the conventional peak shape method fails. In all the cases considered here, the second derivative technique proves to be a potential candidate for estimating the number of peaks and their respective locations in a complex TL glow curve.

RESUMO

The heart rate and blood lactate were studied in field hockey players (25 juniors and 29 seniors) as well as the blood lactate response in training to assess the anaerobic demand of the game and the adaptability of the players to anaerobic metabolism, respectively. The mean VO2 max of the junior and senior players were 3.32 l/min (54.4 ml/kg/min) and 3.28 l/min (53.8 ml/kg/min), respectively. Blood lactate levels after warm up, training and the game were 2.1, 7.4 and 4.2 mM/l, respectively for the juniors and 2.6, 7.7 and 5.6 mM/l, for the seniors. The aerobic capacity (VO2 max) of the juniors did not differ from their senior counterparts, indicating a similar adaptability to aerobic metabolism. However, the Indian players revealed a lower VO2 max than their International counterparts. Similar lactate levels in juniors and seniors after training indicated a similar adaptability to the anaerobic metabolism also. The higher blood lactate level in seniors after the game reflected that they played with greater intensity than the juniors, due to more experience, better motivation and skill.

RESUMO

A patient with multiple psychosomatic disorder developed a steroid induced rare bipolar mood disorder (both mania and depression). The "unmasking effect" of steroids and a positive family history of psychiatric disorder as a possible risk factor, hitherto undocumented, is suggested in steroid induced psychosis.

RESUMO

An environmental-cum-medical survey was carried out in asbestos mines and milling units at Pullivendalla, Cuddaph (A.P.) India. This was done in two mines and six milling units with 95% of the total work force being surveyed. Out of a total of 633 registered workers, 329 (52%, all males) were employed in mines while 135 (21.4%) workers of whom 114 (84%, all females) were employed in the milling units. All subjects underwent limited medical examination, spirometry and chest radiographs. The levels of asbestos fiber concentration was much below threshold limit value (TLV) in underground mines but several times higher than TLV in milling units. The percentage of workers with abnormal pulmonary function tests (PFT) and chest radiographs increased with duration of exposure in smokers as well as non-smokers. Restrictive pattern of lung functions (159 workers-16.27%) was more common than obstructive (33 workers-5.21%) and combined type (22 workers-3.4%). Similarly, the parenchymal changes (156 workers-24.6%) were more common than pleural (27 workers-4.3%). As most of the males were employed in mines, where the fiber levels were much below TLV, the number of male workers with normal PFT and chest radiographs were ten times (61.3%) more than male workers with both the parameters abnormal (6.3%). As most of the females (114 our of 120--95%) were employed in milling units, where the levels of fibers were several times higher than TLV, the number of females having both the parameters normal 29 (24.1%) or abnormal 35 (29.2%) were similar.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite considerable efficacy, conventional antipsychotics cause debilitating extrapyramidal side effects and may worsen 'negative' symptoms of schizophrenia. New atypical antipsychotics (clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine) have become available, and quetiepine is expected shortly; it is TGA approved and is currently available to psychiatrists through a familiarization program. OBJECTIVE: To inform general practitioners about the novel antipsychotics and their therapeutic role in contrast to conventional antipsychotic drugs. DISCUSSION: The major benefit offered by atypical antipsychotics is that these drugs are less likely to cause distressing and disabling extrapyramidal side effects at therapeutically effective doses than conventional drugs. Advantages in terms of efficacy are marginal, though clozapine is superior to conventional drugs in treatment resistant patients. The new drugs are not without other side effects. Clozapine can cause agranulocytosis, needs ongoing haematological monitoring and is only available through specialist centres. However, the new drugs do improve overall outcome. Use of risperidone, olanzapine and quetiepine is now widely recommended in preference to conventional drugs, while clozapine is used when other drugs have failed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Over 2% of the population suffer from schizophrenia and related psychoses. Virtually all sufferers now live in the community, and go to see their general practitioners. OBJECTIVE: To overview recent developments in the presentation and causes of schizophrenia and its treatment with medication and psychosocial intervention. DISCUSSION: The diagnostic boundaries of schizophrenia have become less distinct as aetiological and therapeutic similarities between schizoaffective and affective psychoses have emerged. The importance of specific symptom groups (positive, negative, cognitive, manic, depressed) with respect to brain mechanisms and response to treatment has been recognised. It is now thought that recognition of early phase illness and vigorous treatment aimed at relapse prevention may improve long term prognosis. Availability of new medications has improved outcomes. Patients with schizophrenia living in the community need a range of services best delivered through collaborative care between GPs, community and specialist services.

RESUMO

A rare case of complex partial seizure (psychomotor epilepsy) with varying shades of psychiatric manifestations is presented. The highlights are multiplicity of its manifestation in the same case, its interchanging pattern and the variable durations. This gray area of psychiatry and neurology is discussed with special reference to diagnosis and management.

RESUMO

Dermatoglyphic is the study of the epidermal ridges and the pattern formed by them. It may be pointed out that genetic factors have a large share in determining the variations in dermatoglyphics. It is however, suggested by evidence that bipolar mood disorder factors are determined more by genetic factors than by the environmental factors. The experiment has been undertaken to look for the effects of the bipolar mood disorder on dermatoglyphics. The dermatoglyphic characteristics of subjects with bipolar mood disorder when compared with control group revealed significant differences. The radial loop were increased in bipolar mood disorder, but there were little changes in 'atd' angles between normal and bipolar mood disorder.

RESUMO

To investigate the effects of copper (Cu), rice plant (Oryza sativa. L. var. MSE-9) was treated with different Cu concentrations (0, 10, 50 and 100 µM) for 5 days in hydroponic condition. Gradual decrease in shoot and root growth was observed with the increase of Cu concentration and duration of treatment where maximum inhibition was recorded in root growth. Cu was readily absorbed by the plant though the maximum accumulation was found in root than shoot. Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) production and lipid peroxidation were found increased with the elevated Cu concentration indicating excess Cu induced oxidative stress. Antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) were effectively generated at the elevated concentrations of Cu though catalase (CAT) did not show significant variation with respect to control. Ascorbate (ASH), glutathione (GSH) and proline contents were also increased in all the Cu treated plants compared with the control. SOD isoenzyme was greatly affected by higher concentration of Cu and it was consistent with the changes of the activity assayed in solution. The present study confirmed that excess Cu inhibits growth, induced oxidative stress by inducing ROS formation while the stimulated antioxidative system appears adaptive response of rice plant against Cu induced oxidative stress. Moreover proline accumulation in Cu stress plant seems to provide additional defense against the oxidative stress.

RESUMO

This study examines in detail - i) the magnitude, nature and severity of thought disorder in schizophrenia, ii) the correlations between type and severity of thought disorder with socio-demographic and clinical variables, and iii) differences between different subtypes of schizophrenia. Forty five schizophrenics (Research Diagnostic Criteria) were assessed by 'live' interview as well as tape recorded interviews. Instruments used for assessment were (a) Scale for assessment of Thought, Language and Communication (Andreasen 1978), (b) Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (Overall & Gorham 1962), (c) Mini Mental State (Folstein 1975), and (d) Clinical and demographic data recording proforma. The Schizophrenic patients were subdivided as (i) Acute and chronic (R.D.C.), (ii) Paranoid and non-paranoid; and (iii) Negative, positive, mixed (Andreasen's criteria) and intragroup and intergroup differences were computed.Poverty of speech, tangentiality, derailment, loss of goal, perseveration were found to be the commonest thought disorders. Positive and negative thought disorders were seen in equiproportion in both positive and negative schizophrenics. Significant differences were noted between thought disorders and education as well as habitat. Rural patients more often had negative formal thought disorders. Literates had more often clanging, neologism, circumstantiality and echolalia. This study provides ample information on the nature of thought disorder in Indian schizophrenic subjects.
