RESUMO

Cardiac rehabilitation in patients with diabetes mellitus and heart failure may be affected by anti-diabetic drugs. However, there are few reports on the effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on cardiac rehabilitation. Thus, we retrospectively investigated the patient backgrounds and effects of cardiac rehabilitation in 44 patients admitted to our hospital with heart failure and pre-existing diabetes mellitus. Our results showed that the patients tended to be older, and those who received SGLT2 inhibitors had lower systolic blood pressure and left ventricular ejection fraction on admission than those who did not. Cardiac rehabilitation significantly improved the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score in all patients, and there was no significant difference in body mass index or in body weight. There were no significant differences in SPPB score at admission, discharge, or change from admission to discharge with or without SGLT2 inhibitors. These results suggest that SGLT2 inhibitors do not affect the change in SPPB scores. SGLT2 inhibitors may thus be used safely without affecting cardiac rehabilitation while adhering to the necessary safety precautions.

We investigated the low-temperature and high-field thermodynamic and ultrasonic properties of SrCu_{2}(BO_{3})_{2}, which exhibits various plateaux in its magnetization curve above 27 T, called a magnetic Devil's staircase. The results of the present study confirm that magnetic crystallization, the first step of the staircase, occurs above 27 T as a first-order transition accompanied by a sharp singularity in heat capacity C_{p} and a kink in the elastic constant. In addition, we observe a thermodynamic anomaly at lower fields around 26 T, which has not been previously detected by any magnetic probes. At low temperatures, this magnetically hidden state has a large entropy and does not exhibit Schottky-type gapped behavior, which suggests the existence of low-energy collective excitations. Based on our observations and theoretical predictions, we propose that magnetic quadrupoles form a spin-nematic state around 26 T as a hidden state on the ground floor of the magnetic Devil's staircase.

Microbursts are impulsive (<1 s) injections of electrons into the atmosphere, thought to be caused by nonlinear scattering by chorus waves. Although attempts have been made to quantify their contribution to outer belt electron loss, the uncertainty in the overall size and duration of the microburst region is typically large, so that their contribution to outer belt loss is uncertain. We combine datasets that measure chorus waves (Van Allen Probes [RBSP], Arase, ground-based VLF stations) and microburst (>30 keV) precipitation (FIREBIRD II and AC6 CubeSats, POES) to determine the size of the microburst-producing chorus source region beginning on 5 December 2017. We estimate that the long-lasting (∼30 hr) microburst-producing chorus region extends from 4 to 8 Δ MLT and 2-5 Δ L. We conclude that microbursts likely represent a major loss source of outer radiation belt electrons for this event.

AIM: To validate the utility of hepatic resection combined with complementary radiofrequency ablation (RFA) compared with resection alone for patients with multiple hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and to compare these results with those of a previous report. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 78 HCC patients with multiple (≤5) tumours who were initially treated with hepatic resection only (Resection group) or with combined hepatic resection and RFA (Combination group) were included. Overall and disease-free survival were analysed. RESULTS: There were 21 women and 57 men with a median age of 72.5 (64.3-76.8) years. Fifty-three patients were treated with resection alone and 25 received combination therapy. The 3-, 5-, and 7-year cumulative overall survival rates were 81.2%, 68.2%, and 57.1%, respectively, in the Resection group, and 81.3%, 59.6%, and 42.4%%, respectively, in the Combination group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.462; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.682-3.136; p=0.329). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year cumulative disease-free survival rates were 61.4%, 45.7%, and 39.8%, respectively, in the Resection group, and 53.1%, 18.6%, and 0%, respectively, in the Combination group (HR, 2.080; 95% CI, 1.157-3.737; p=0.014). The overall survival rate was not significantly different between the Resection and Combination groups in patients within the up-to-seven HCC criteria (n=56; HR, 2.101; 95% CI, 0.805-5.486; p=0.130) or those beyond these criteria (n=22; HR, 0.804; 95% CI, 0.197-3.286; p=0.761). CONCLUSIONS: The combination of hepatic resection and RFA therapy may be an effective strategy for HCC patients with multiple tumours.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of zinc finger protein 440 (ZNF440) in the pathophysiology of cartilage degeneration during facet joint (FJ) and knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Expression of ZNF440 in FJ and knee cartilage was determined by immunohistochemistry, quantitative (q)PCR, and Western blotting (WB). Human chondrocytes isolated from FJ and knee OA cartilage were cultured and transduced with ZNF440 or control plasmid, or transfected with ZNF440 or control small interfering RNA (siRNA), with/without interleukin (IL)-1ß. Gene and protein levels of catabolic, anabolic and apoptosis markers were determined by qPCR or WB, respectively. In silico analyses were performed to determine compounds with potential to inhibit expression of ZNF440. RESULTS: ZNF440 expression was increased in both FJ and knee OA cartilage compared to control cartilage. In vitro, overexpression of ZNF440 significantly increased expression of MMP13 and PARP p85, and decreased expression of COL2A1. Knockdown of ZNF440 with siRNA partially reversed the catabolic and cell death phenotype of human knee and FJ OA chondrocytes stimulated with IL-1ß. In silico analysis followed by validation assays identified scriptaid as a compound with potential to downregulate the expression of ZNF440. Validation experiments showed that scriptaid reduced the expression of ZNF440 in OA chondrocytes and concomitantly reduced the expression of MMP13 and PARP p85 in human knee OA chondrocytes overexpressing ZNF440. CONCLUSIONS: The expression of ZNF440 is significantly increased in human FJ and knee OA cartilage and may regulate cartilage degenerative mechanisms. Furthermore, scriptaid reduces the expression of ZNF440 and inhibits its destructive effects in OA chondrocytes.

RESUMO

We present acoustic signatures of the electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the honeycomb-layer compound UNi_{4}B. The transverse ultrasonic mode C_{66} shows softening below 30 K both in the paramagnetic phase and antiferromagnetic phases down to ∼0.33 K. Furthermore, we traced magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams up to 30 T and observed a highly anisotropic elastic response within the honeycomb layer. These observations strongly suggest that Γ_{6}(E_{2g}) electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in localized 5f^{2} (J=4) states are playing an important role in the magnetic toroidal dipole order and magnetic-field-induced phases of UNi_{4}B, and evidence some of the U ions remain in the paramagnetic state even if the system undergoes magnetic toroidal ordering.

OBJECT: Autophagy maintains cartilage homeostasis and is compromised during osteoarthritis (OA), contributing to cartilage degeneration. We sought to determine if D-isomer TAT-Beclin-1, a potent inducer of autophagy, could attenuate post-traumatic OA in mice. METHODS: 10-week-old mice underwent destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) surgery to induce post-traumatic OA, or sham surgery (control), and injected intra-articularly with D-isomer TAT-Beclin-1 (0.5-2 mg/kg) or PBS 1 week post-surgery for up to 9 weeks. Mice were sacrificed at 2 or 10 weeks post-surgery. Knee joint sections were evaluated by histopathology for cartilage degeneration and synovitis, and immunostaining for key markers of autophagy (LC3B), cell proliferation (nuclear Ki67), activated fibroblasts (αSMA), and cells of hematopoietic origin (CD45). RESULTS: All D-isomer TAT-Beclin-1-treated DMM mice had no difference in the degree of cartilage degeneration compared to PBS-injected DMM mice. Surprisingly, all D-isomer TAT-Beclin-1-treated mice exhibited substantial synovial hyperplasia, with increased cellularity and ECM deposition (fibrosis-like phenotype), as compared to PBS-injected mice. Synovial effects of D-isomer TAT-Beclin-1 were dose- and injection frequency-dependent. An increased percentage of cells positive for LC3B and nuclear Ki67 were found in the synovial intima early after injection, which persisted after frequent injections. CONCLUSIONS: D-isomer TAT-Beclin-1 did not attenuate cartilage degeneration, but rather induced synovial hyperplasia associated with increased expression of key markers of autophagy and cell proliferation and a fibrosis-like phenotype, independent of markers of fibroblast activation or persistent hematopoietic-origin cell infiltration. These data suggest that, if not tissue-targeted, caution should be taken using autophagy activators due to diverse cellular responses in the joint.

We theoretically and experimentally investigate Tamm plasmon (TP) modes in a metal/semiconductor distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) interface. A thin Ag (silver) layer with a thickness (55 nm from simulation) that is optimized to guarantee a low reflectivity at the resonance was deposited on nanoporous GaN DBRs fabricated using electrochemical (EC) etching on freestanding semipolar (2021¯) GaN substrates. The reflectivity spectra of the DBRs are compared before and after the Ag deposition and with that of a blanket Ag layer deposited on GaN. The experimental results indicate the presence of a TP mode at ∼ 454 nm on the structure after the Ag deposition, which is also supported by theoretical calculations using a transfer-matrix algorithm. The results from mode dispersion with energy-momentum reflectance spectroscopy measurements also support the presence of a TP mode at the metal-nanoporous GaN DBR interface. An active medium can also be accommodated within the mode for optoelectronics and photonics. Moreover, the simulation results predict a sensitivity of the TP mode wavelength to the ambient (∼ 4-7 nm shift when changing the ambient within the pores from air with n = 1 to isopropanol n = 1.3), suggesting an application of the nanoporous GaN-based TP structure for optical sensing.

Interaction cross sections for ^{42-51}Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number N=28. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and mean field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond N=28 results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare ^{48}Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond N=28.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a severe neurodegenerative disease caused by the loss of upper and lower motor neurons resulting in muscle weakness and paralysis. Recently, VGF, a neuropeptide that is a precursor of bioactive polypeptides, was found to be decreased in ALS patients, and its inducer exerted protective effects in models of ALS. These findings suggested that VGF was involved in the pathology of ALS. Here, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of various VGF-derived peptides in an in vitro ALS model. We applied seven VGF-derived peptides (TLQP-21, AQEE-30, AQEE-11, LQEQ-19, QEEL-16, LENY-13, and HVLL-7) to the motor neuron-derived cell line, NSC-34, expressing SOD1G93A, which is one of the mutated proteins responsible for familial ALS. Nuclear staining revealed that AQEE-30 and LQEQ-19, which are derived from the C-terminal polypeptide of the VGF precursor protein, attenuated neuronal cell death. Furthermore, immunoblot analysis demonstrated that LQEQ-19 promoted the phosphorylation of Akt and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2, and inhibiting these mitogen-activated MAP kinases (MAPKs) with phosphoinositide 3-kinase or MEK/ERK inhibitors, eliminated the neuroprotective effects of LQEQ-19. In conclusion, these results suggest that VGF C-terminal peptides exert their neuroprotective effects via activation of MAPKs such as Akt and ERK1/2. Furthermore, these findings indicate that VGF-derived peptides have potential application in ALS therapy.

Immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an unusual complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We report a case in which belimumab proved efficacious for not only SLE, but also IgG4-RD. A 58-year-old Japanese woman had suffered from photodermatosis and erythema on the limbs for 20 years. She presented in slight fever and fatigue since 2016. Laboratory data showed hypergammaglobulinemia, proteinuria and positive results for anti-nuclear antibody and anti-double-stranded DNA antibody. Furthermore, elevated levels of serum IgG4 were detected. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography disclosed multiple areas of poor enhancement in the kidneys. The patient was diagnosed with lupus nephritis and IgG4-RD from renal biopsy. Treatment was started with prednisolone at 40 mg/day and mycophenolate mofetil. Proteinuria and serological findings improved initially, but tapering the dose of glucocorticoid proved difficult. After treatment was started with belimumab, clinical symptoms and proteinuria resolved completely. The dose of glucocorticoid was successfully tapered and serum concentration of IgG4 fell further. This appears to represent the first report of a case in which both SLE and IgG4-RD were effectively treated using belimumab.

The tachinid fly Drino inconspicuoides (Diptera: Tachinidae) is an ovolarviparous endoparasitoid whose larvae develop in the host haemocoel and avoids the host immune system. In this study, we investigated the immune evasion mechanisms of this species during infestation in the host Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). We discovered a unique 'cloak' that surrounded D. inconspicuoides larvae that penetrated into the host and determined through genomic polymerase chain reaction analysis that this structure originated from the host rather than the tachinid. The 'cloak' contained both haemocytes and fat body cells from the host, with the haemocytes assembling around the larvae first and the fat body cells then covering the haemocyte layer, following which the two mixed. Living D. inconspicuoides larvae that were wrapped in the 'cloak' were not melanized whereas encapsulated dead larvae were melanized, suggesting that this structure contributes to the avoidance of host immune reactions.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronan (HA) metabolism in skin fibroblasts is mediated by HYBID (hyaluronan binding protein involved in hyaluronan depolymerization, alias CEMIP and KIAA1199) and the HA synthases HAS1 and HAS2. However, photoageing-dependent changes in HA and their molecular mechanisms, and the relationship between HA metabolism and clinical symptoms in photoaged skin remain elusive. OBJECTIVES: We examined the amount, size and tissue distribution of HA and expression levels of HYBID, HAS1 and HAS2 in photoaged skin, and analysed their relationship with the degree of photoageing. METHODS: Photoageing-dependent changes of HA were investigated by studying skin biopsies isolated from photoprotected and photoexposed areas of the same donors, and the relationships between HA and photoageing symptoms such as skin wrinkling and sagging were examined. RESULTS: Skin biopsy specimens showed that the amount and size of HA are decreased in photoexposed skin compared with photoprotected skin, and this was accompanied by increased expression of HYBID and decreased expression of HAS1 and HAS2. Histologically, HA staining in the papillary dermis was decreased in photoexposed skin, showing reverse correlation with HYBID expression. HYBID expression in the photoexposed skin directly correlated with skin roughness and sagging parameters, and the reduced HA staining in the papillary dermis in the photoexposed skin positively correlated with these symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate that imbalance between HYBID-mediated HA degradation and HAS-mediated HA synthesis may contribute to enhanced HA catabolism in photoaged skin, and suggest that HYBID-mediated HA reduction in the papillary dermis is related to skin wrinkling and sagging of photoaged skin.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronan (HA) is an important constituent of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the skin, and HA degradation mediated by HYBID (KIAA1199) is suggested to be implicated in facial skin wrinkling in Japanese women. Ethnic difference in skin wrinkle formation is known between Caucasian and Japanese women, but no information is available for the relations of HA and HYBID expression levels with skin wrinkling in Caucasian women. METHODS: The skin surface roughness at the eye corner of the Caucasian female subjects was measured, and the skin specimens biopsied from the same areas were subjected to microarray gene analysis, HA staining, and immunohistochemistry for HYBID. RESULTS: Among the ECM genes and those related to ECM metabolism, only HYBID expression levels positively correlated with the skin roughness parameters. When the skin sample groups with high expression of HYBID or low expression of HYBID were compared, the HA staining intensity and the ratio of HYBID-immunoreactive cells to total cells in the superficial dermis were significantly reduced and increased in the high-HYBID-expression group compared with the low-HYBID-expression group, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that like Japanese women, HYBID-mediated reduction of HA in the superficial dermis is involved in the formation of wrinkles in Caucasian women.

KEY POINTS: Cerebral haemodynamic response to neural stimulation has been extensively investigated in animal and clinical studies, in both adult and paediatric populations, but little is known about cerebral haemodynamic functional response in the fetal brain. The present study describes the cerebral haemodynamic response measured by near-infrared spectroscopy to somatosensory stimulation in fetal sheep. The cerebral haemodynamic response in the fetal sheep brain changes from a positive (increase in oxyhaemoglobin (oxyHb)) response pattern to a negative or biphasic response pattern when the duration of somatosensory stimulation is increased, probably due to cerebral vasoconstriction with prolonged stimulations. In contrast to adult studies, we have found that changes in fetal cerebral blood flow and oxyHb are positively increased in response to somatosensory stimulation during hypercapnia. We propose this is related to reduced vascular resistance and recruitment of cerebral vasculature in the fetal brain during hypercapnia. ABSTRACT: Functional hyperaemia induced by a localised increase in neuronal activity has been suggested to occur in the fetal brain owing to a positive blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging following acoustic stimulation. To study the effect of somatosensory input on local cerebral perfusion we used near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in anaesthetised, partially exteriorised fetal sheep where the median nerve was stimulated with trains of pulses (2 ms, 3.3 Hz) for durations of 1.8, 4.8 and 7.8 s. Signal averaging of cerebral NIRS responses to 20 stimulus trains repeated every 60 s revealed that a short duration of stimulation (1.8 s) increased oxyhaemoglobin in the contralateral cortex consistent with a positive functional response, whereas longer durations of stimulation (4.8, 7.8 s) produced more variable oxyhaemoglobin responses including positive, negative and biphasic patterns of change. Mean arterial blood pressure and cerebral perfusion as monitored by laser Doppler flowmetry always showed small, but coincident increases following median nerve stimulation regardless of the type of response detected by the NIRS in the contralateral cortex. Hypercapnia significantly increased the baseline total haemoglobin and deoxyhaemoglobin, and in 7 of 8 fetal sheep positively increased the changes in contralateral total haemoglobin and oxyhaemoglobin in response to the 7.8 s stimulus train, compared to the response recorded during normocapnia. These results show that activity-driven changes in cerebral perfusion and oxygen delivery are present in the fetal brain, and persist even during periods of hypercapnia-induced cerebral vasodilatation.

A precise description of neutrino-nucleus reactions will play a key role in addressing fundamental questions such as the leptonic CP violation and the neutrino mass hierarchy through analyzing data from next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments. The neutrino energy relevant to the neutrino-nucleus reactions spans a broad range and, accordingly, the dominant reaction mechanism varies across the energy region from quasi-elastic scattering through nucleon resonance excitations to deep inelastic scattering. This corresponds to transitions of the effective degree of freedom for theoretical description from nucleons through meson-baryon to quarks. The main purpose of this review is to report our recent efforts towards a unified description of the neutrino-nucleus reactions over the wide energy range; recent overall progress in the field is also sketched. Starting with an overview of the current status of neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments, we formulate the cross section to be commonly used for the reactions over all the energy regions. A description of the neutrino-nucleon reactions follows and, in particular, a dynamical coupled-channels model for meson productions in and beyond the [Formula: see text](1232) region is discussed in detail. We then discuss the neutrino-nucleus reactions, putting emphasis on our theoretical approaches. We start the discussion with electroweak processes in few-nucleon systems studied with the correlated Gaussian method. Then we describe quasi-elastic scattering with nuclear spectral functions, and meson productions with a [Formula: see text]-hole model. Nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions determined through a global analysis are also discussed. Finally, we discuss issues to be addressed for future developments.

PURPOSE: This retrospective study evaluated the effect of clinical background and treatment line on time to treatment failure (TTF) in advanced/metastatic breast cancer (AMBC) patients receiving F500 in Japan (UMIN 000015168). METHODS: Patients who commenced F500 treatment were registered at 16 sites in Japan. Correlations between baseline clinicopathological factors, treatment line, and TTF were investigated by Kaplan-Meier analysis. TTF data were analyzed using univariate analysis and multivariate analysis with a Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: Data for 1072 patients were available; 1031 patients (96.2%) were evaluable for efficacy. F500 was administered as first-line treatment in 2.0%, second-line in 22.7%, third-line in 26.7%, and ≥fourth-line in 48.6% patients. Median TTF was 5.4 months. Multivariate analysis found that earlier F500 use (first and second vs. third vs. ≥fourth line; hazard ratio (HR) = 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.74-0.86; P < 0.001), longer period from AMBC diagnosis to F500 use (≥3 vs. <3 years; HR 0.60, 95% CI 0.51-0.70; P < 0.001), and no prior palliative chemotherapy administered for unresectable or metastatic breast cancer (no vs. yes; HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.60-0.80; P < 0.001) were associated with significantly longer TTF. Among 691 patients, where information on histologic/nuclear grade was available, a low grade was also associated with a longer TTF, but this finding was not maintained among patients with recurrent breast cancer (N = 558). Among women with recurrent breast cancer, a longer DFI between a patient's initial breast cancer diagnosis and their recurrence was associated with a longer TTF on F500 therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that treatment period of F500 was longer when used in earlier-line treatment. For patients on F500, TTF was also longer for patients who had not received prior palliative chemotherapy and for those who had a longer period from their AMBC diagnosis to F500 use.

To examine genes expressed specifically in labial salivary glands (LSGs) of patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in comparison with those of patients with immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-related disease (IgG4-RD), and to identify the genes involved in the pathogenesis of SS. Gene expression in LSGs of SS patients, IgG4-RD patients and healthy controls (HC) was analysed by cDNA microarray. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to validate the up-regulation of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in SS. Protein production of the validated gene in LSGs was examined by immunofluorescence (IF) assay. The association of molecular functions of the gene with the pathological conditions in SS was examined using peripheral blood lymphocytes. Among 1320 DEGs up-regulated in SS, qPCR confirmed the up-regulation of NR4A2 in LSGs of SS compared with IgG4-RD. IF staining showed higher production of NR4A2 in nuclei of CD4+ T cells and interleukin (IL)-17-producing cells in LSGs of SS, compared with IgG4-RD. Over-expression of NR4A2 mRNA was observed in peripheral CD4+ T cells of SS patients, compared with HC. Nuclear NR4A2 expression in T helper type 17 (Th17)-polarized CD4+ T cells determined by cellular IF was significantly higher in SS than in HC. Importazole, an inhibitor of importin-ß, inhibited nuclear transport of NR4A2 and Th17 polarization along with IL-21 expression in naive CD4+ T cells under Th17-polarizing conditions, but did not alter retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor C (RORC) expression. NR4A2 seems to promote Th17 polarization via increased expression and intranuclear localization in CD4+ T cells of SS patients, which could play a critical role in the pathogenesis of SS.

Various DNA conformational changes are in correlation with biological events. In particular, DNA B-Z equilibrium showed a high correlation with translation and transcription. In this study, we developed a DNA probe containing 5-trifluoromethylcytidine or 5-trifluoromethylthymidine to detect DNA B-Z equilibrium using 19F-NMR. Its probe enabled the quantitative detection of B-, Z-, and ss-DNA based on 19F-NMR chemical shift change.

The costs and benefits of polyandry are still not well understood. We studied the effects of multiple mating on the reproductive performance of female Brontispa longissima (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), one of the most serious pests of the coconut palm, by using three experimental treatments: (1) singly-mated females (single treatment); (2) females that mated 10 times with the same male (repetition treatment); and (3) females that mated once with each of 10 different males (polyandry treatment). Both multiple mating treatments resulted in significantly greater total egg production and the proportion of eggs that successfully hatched (hatching success) than with the single mating treatment. Furthermore, the polyandry treatment resulted in greater total egg production and hatching success than with the repetition treatment. Thus, mate diversity may affect the direct and indirect benefits of multiple mating. Female longevity, the length of the preoviposition period, the length of the period from emergence to termination of oviposition, and the length of the ovipositing period did not differ among treatments. The pronounced fecundity and fertility benefits that females gain from multiple mating, coupled with a lack of longevity costs, apparently explain the extreme polyandry in B. longissima.
