Stimulative effect of skipjack tuna soluble extract on pepsin-like protease in the stomach of rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) using an in vitro perfusion method.

The effect of intra-gastric infusion of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) muscle soluble extract and of carnosine, anserine and histidine, on pepsin-like protease activity was studied in the isolated, externally batch-cultured stomach of the rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii). Stomach was isolated from the fish, then intragastrically infused with the above solutions or with a balanced saline solution (control solution) as the stimulant at 0.1 mL/min for 6h. Intra-gastric efflux was collected for measurement of pepsin-like protease activity. Skipjack tuna soluble extract, but not carnosine, anserine or histidine alone caused significant enhancement of pepsin-like protease activity during the infusion. Pepsin-like protease activity from skipjack tuna soluble extract responded immediately after infusion and was kept for 150 min after infusion. Stomach motility at the end of infusion was also observed. These results suggest that isolated stomach can receive mucosal side stimulants in vitro. It is likely that some effective components for stomach digestion in fish exist in skipjack tuna soluble extract.

Hydrogel formation between enantiomeric B-A-B-type block copolymers of polylactides (PLLA or PDLA: A) and polyoxyethylene (PEG: B); PEG-PLLA-PEG and PEG-PDLA-PEG.

A mixed suspension of the enantiomeric B-A-B triblock copolymers, polyoxyethylene-block-poly(L-lactide)-block-polyoxyethylene (PEG-PLLA-PEG) and polyoxyethylene-block-poly(D-lactide)-block-polyoxyethylene (PEG-PDLA-PEG), was found to induce reversible gel-to-sol transition depending on the polymer concentration and temperature. The storage and loss moduli of the gel formed at lower temperature were much higher than those of the gel prepared from the corresponding ABA-type triblock copolymers because of the higher polymer concentration in the former. Although the stereo-complexation of the PLLA and PDLA blocks occurred at higher temperature also in the B-A-B copolymers, it was not responsible for the gelation of the mixed suspension. The PEG chains, involved in the helix formation of the PLLA and PDLA, should form helices with opposite helical senses to aggregate and lead the gelation of the system.

Multiple endocrine disorders and Rathke's cleft cyst with Klinefelter's syndrome: a case report.

A 46-year-old Japanese male was admitted for the evaluation of severe hypertension. He was obese and had a eunuchoidal body habitus. Chromosomal analysis revealed a 46, XY/47, XXY karyotype. Serum LH, FSH and testosterone levels were low, indicating hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Endocrinological dynamic tests disclosed presence of hypothalamic panhypopituitarism, partial diabetes insipidus, type 2 diabetes mellitus and low renin essential hypertension. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed intra- and extrasellar masses. Histological examination of the tissue obtained at transsphenoidal surgery showed a Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of mosaic Klinefelter's syndrome accompanied by symptomatic RCC, type 2 diabetes mellitus and low renin essential hypertension.
