RESUMO

Chronic pain is associated with dysfunctional cortical excitability. Research has identified altered intracortical motor cortex excitability in Chronic Lower Back Pain (CLBP). However, research identifying the specific intracortical changes underlying CLBP has been met with inconsistent findings. In the present case-control study, we examined intracortical excitability of the primary motor cortex using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in individuals with CLBP. Twenty participants with CLBP (Mage = 54.45 years, SDage = 15.89 years) and 18 age- and gender-matched, pain-free controls (M = 53.83, SD = 16.72) were included in this study. TMS was applied to the hand motor area of the right hemisphere and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle of the contralateral hand. Resting motor threshold (rMT) and MEP amplitude were measured using single-pulse stimulation. Short interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) and intracortical facilitation (ICF) were assessed using paired-pulse stimulation. Individuals with CLBP had significantly higher rMT (decreased corticospinal excitability) and lower ICF compared to controls. No significant differences were found in MEP amplitude and SICI. These findings add to the growing body of evidence that CLBP is associated with deficits in intracortical modulation involving glutamatergic mechanisms.

RESUMO

A number of feedbacks regulate the response of Arctic sea ice to local atmospheric warming. Using a realistic coupled ocean-sea ice model and its adjoint, we isolate a mechanism by which significant ice growth at the end of the melt season may occur as a lagged response to Arctic atmospheric warming. A series of perturbation simulations informed by adjoint model-derived sensitivity patterns reveal the enhanced ice growth to be accompanied by a reduction of snow thickness on the ice pack. Detailed analysis of ocean-ice-snow heat budgets confirms the essential role of the reduced snow thickness for persistence and delayed overshoot of ice growth. The underlying mechanism is a snow-melt-conductivity feedback, wherein atmosphere-driven snow melt leads to a larger conductive ocean heat loss through the overlying ice layer. Our results highlight the need for accurate observations of snow thickness to constrain climate models and to initialize sea ice forecasts.

RESUMO

AIMS: We investigated the potential cooperative effects of carotenoid-producing Bacillus aquimaris SH6 and nonpigmented Bacillus subtilis SH23 on white-leg shrimp growth and health. METHODS AND RESULTS: SH6, SH23 and a combination of both spores (1 × 106  CFU per g pellet) were administered in shrimp. The growth rate (2·36% day-1 ), red-colour score (25) and astaxanthin concentration (3·5 µg g-1 shrimp) were maximum in two-spore-administered shrimp. Immune-related Rho mRNA expression level and phenoloxidase and superoxidase dismutase activities were higher in two-spore-administered shrimp than in control shrimp, with Rho mRNA expression level being 55-fold higher in two-spore-administered shrimp than in SH6-administered shrimp and phenoloxidase activity being 1·2-fold higher in two-spore-administered shrimp than in SH23-administered shrimp. Although live SH6 count was 2·7-fold lower, SH6 germination level was 3·5-fold higher in the combination group than in SH6 group. CONCLUSIONS: When both SH6 and SH23 spores were administered, SH6 spore germination was enhanced and cooperative improvement was seen in growth, astaxanthin level and red-colour score of white-leg shrimp; however, immune-related parameters were induced in a noncooperative manner. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first report showing the cooperative probiotic activities of Bacillus strains and their possible mechanisms in a shrimp model.

RESUMO

In this study, Bacillus subtilis spores expressing a chimeric protein, CotB-VP28, were used as a probiotic vaccine to protect black tiger shrimps (Penaeus monodon) against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection. Oral administration of pellets coated with CotB-VP28 spores (at ≥1 × 109  CFU per g pellet) to shrimps induced immune-relating phenoloxydase activity (PO) in shrimps after 14 days of feeding (prior challenge) and at day 3 post challenge (1·26 and 1·70 fold increase respectively). A 75% protection rate was obtained by continuous feeding of the spore-coated pellets at ≥1 × 109  CFU per g for 14 days prior to WSSV challenge and during all the postchallenge period. Even when the amount of CotB-VP28 spores in feed pellets was reduced down to ≥5 × 107  CFU per g and ≥1 × 106  CFU per g, relatively high protection rates of 70 and 67·5%, respectively, were still obtained. By contrast, feeding pellets without spores (untreated group) and with naked spores (PY79 group) at ≥1 × 109  CFU per g could not protect shrimps against WSSV. These data suggest that supplementation of CotB-VP28 spores at low dose of ≥1 × 106  CFU per g could be effective as a prophylactic treatment of WSS for black tiger shrimps. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study reports the protective efficacy of Bacillus subtilis CotB-VP28 spores on black tiger shrimps (Penaeus monodon) against white spot syndrome virus infection. Oral administration of pellets coated with CotB-VP28 spores (≥1 × 109  CFU per g) conferred 75% protection after white spot syndrome virus challenge. Even after reducing CotB-VP28 spores in feed pellets to ≥1 × 106  CFU per g, 67·5% protections was still obtained. These data indicate that supplementation of CotB-VP28 spores at a low dose of ≥1 × 106  CFU per g could be effective in prophylaxis against white spot syndrome in black tiger shrimps.

RESUMO

AIMS: To develop a novel feed supplement for shrimp using pigmented spore-forming bacterial strains isolated from their gastrointestinal tracts. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight pigmented Bacillus strains were selected from the isolates based on high production of heat-stable spores, typical UV-Vis spectra of produced carotenoids (400-550 nm), and free radical scavenging activity of their extracts. Of the eight strains, the red-orange pigmented Bacillus aquimaris SH6 was selected because it showed the highest abundance in shrimp guts (70% population). Whiteleg shrimp (n = 30 per group) fed with SH6 spores, at >3 × 106  CFU g-1  pellet for 4 weeks had redder colour (score of 21-23 vs 20-22), 2·7-fold higher astaxanthin level (0·69 vs 0·25 µg g-1 shrimp), 34% higher weight gain (7·18 vs 5·32 g shrimp-1 ), and 85% higher phenoloxidase activity (OD490  = 0·265 vs 0·143) than shrimp in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The result supports the potential use of B. aquimaris SH6 as a feed supplement for promoting the colourization and weight gain, and for enhancing innate immunity of whiteleg shrimp. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study demonstrates that carotenoids produced by B. aquimaris SH6 can be successfully absorbed and converted to astaxanthin in whiteleg shrimp.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Donovanosis (granuloma inguinale) is a bacterial infection caused by Klebsiella granulomatis that occurs mainly in the genital area and is primarily sexually transmitted; it is seen predominantly in the tropics. Herein, we report a case of the disease contracted in metropolitan France. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 47-year-old man presented with painless ulceration of the glans, present for one month, with progressive extension; there was no history of any recent trip abroad. Skin biopsy with Whartin-Starry and Giemsa staining revealed Donovan bodies in the cytoplasm of macrophages. Based on these findings, further questioning of the patient revealed unprotected sexual contact two months earlier in France. Treatment was initiated with azithromycin 1g on the first day followed by 500mg per day for three weeks. The clinical outcome was spectacular, with almost complete regression of the ulcer at 7 days. DISCUSSION: This case demonstrates that donovanosis can occur in metropolitan France.

RESUMO

Dioxin levels in the breast milk of mothers residing near a contaminated former airbase in Vietnam remain much higher than in unsprayed areas, suggesting high perinatal dioxin exposure for their infants. The present study investigated the association of perinatal dioxin exposure with autistic traits in 153 3-year-old children living in a contaminated area in Vietnam. The children were followed up from birth using the neurodevelopmental battery Bayley-III. The high-2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) exposed groups (⩾3.5 pg per g fat) showed significantly higher Autism Spectrum Rating Scale (ASRS) scores for both boys and girls than the mild-TCDD exposed groups, without differences in neurodevelopmental scores. In contrast, the high total dioxin-exposed group, indicated by polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDDs/Fs)--the toxic equivalents (TEQ) levels⩾17.9 pg-TEQ per g fat, had significantly lower neurodevelopmental scores than the mild-exposed group in boys, but there was no difference in the ASRS scores. The present study demonstrates a specific impact of perinatal TCDD on autistic traits in childhood, which is different from the neurotoxicity of total dioxins (PCDDs/Fs).

RESUMO

Spore-forming bacterial strains were isolated from chicken gastrointestinal tracts to develop a heat-stable feed supplement that promotes weight gain in broilers. Seven Bacillus strains having more than 90% sporulation were screened from the isolates and identified to be closely related with Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis. Of the seven strains, B. subtilis CH16 was selected to develop a feed supplement for broilers, because it formed 100% heat-stable spores, grew rapidly at 42°C and quickly formed a biofilm. In large-scale trials in broilers (n ≥ 1150 per group), the group fed CH16 (3 × 10(6) CFU g(-1) pellet) showed higher average daily gain (ADG = 61·16) and lower food conversion ratio (FCR = 1·696) than did the group fed B. licheniformis CH22 (ADG = 57·10 and FCR = 1·792), the group fed B. subtilis HU58 (ADG = 51·90 and FCR = 1·868), BioPlus group (ADG = 59·32 and FCR = 1·807) and the control group (ADG = 56·02 and FCR = 1·880). In conclusion, CH16 spores significantly increased ADG by 9·17% and reduced FCR by 9·79% in broilers. The result supports the use of B. subtilis CH16 of chicken intestinal origin as a feed supplement that promote weight gain in broilers. Significance and impact of the study: This study reports screening of Bacillus strains isolated from chicken gastrointestinal tracts for development of a feed supplement that promote weight gain in broilers. Of the seven Bacillus isolates with high sporulation efficiency (≥90%), Bacillus subtilis CH16 strain showed the best growth and biofilm formation at body temperature of broilers (42°C). In large-scale trials in broilers (n ≥ 1150 per group), CH16 spores induced a 9·17% increase in daily weight gain (ADG) and a 9·79% reduction in FCR while the commercial BioPlus(®) YC induced only a 5·89% increase in ADG and a 3·88% reduction in FCR.

RESUMO

An important aspect influencing host specificity is a parasite's compatibility, or ability, to infect a potential host. Here, we examine the compatibility between different trematode genotypes of the same species and several host species. To execute this study, we developed a synthetic workflow which combines the use of a fluorescent dye and standard molecular techniques to study host-parasite interactions and host specificity. The utility of the fluorescent dye, BIODIPY FL C12, was evaluated to label and track larval trematodes during experimental infections using the Cerithidea californica-trematode host-parasite system. Our results showed that low dye concentrations (200 nM) did not significantly affect survival or infectivity of Acanthoparyphium spinulosum and proved to be useful for labeling cercariae. Parasites were genotyped based on sequences from cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) prior to labeling and experimental infections. Samples with low COI PCR product yield were reamplified using the M13 tails to obtain enough material for sequencing. Three parasite genotypes were recovered and results from experimental infections demonstrated varying levels of host specificity. Of the three host species used (C. californica, Polydora nuchalis, Tagelus californianus), genotype B was unable to infect P. nuchalis. Genotype A individuals were less likely to infect P. nuchalis than the other host species. Additionally, genotype C was unable to infect any host offered in this study. These findings reflect possible suboptimal pairings between parasite genotype and host species. Furthermore, the present study provides procedures that are useful for exploring parasite ecology at the molecular level.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Despite a decreasing incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), the cost-effectiveness of AAA ultrasound screening can be improved by reducing the screening costs and increasing the uptake rates. The BVI 9600 (BVI) is a promising tool for this purpose as it is inexpensive and can detect AAA without a trained operator. This study aims to investigate whether the BVI can be used to detect AAA for the purpose of a low-cost outreach screening approach. METHODS: A total of 142 subjects had their abdominal aortae measured by five sonographers using the BVI and a conventional ultrasound machine. The examination included four anterior-posterior measurements at four equally spaced scanning locations from the xiphisternum to the umbilicus. The measurements produced by each machine were compared using Bland-Altman plots, followed by an analysis of the AAA detection performance. RESULTS: The BVI measured the aortic diameter to within 0.88-1.56 cm of the true diameter, exceeding the 0.5 cm "clinically acceptable difference" (CAD). Its accuracy was poorer when measuring the aneurysmal aortae (mean difference -0.56 cm, variability 1.72 cm) than normal aortae (mean difference 0.02 cm, variability 0.76 cm). Nine out of 52 aneurysms were not detected due to undersizing measurement and non-visualization of the aortae. CONCLUSIONS: At present, the BVI is not sufficiently accurate to detect AAA for screening purposes. A number of technical features require improvement.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Change in breast density may predict outcome of women receiving adjuvant hormone therapy for breast cancer. We performed a prospective clinical trial to evaluate the impact of inherited variants in genes involved in oestrogen metabolism and signalling on change in mammographic percent density (MPD) with aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy. METHODS: Postmenopausal women with breast cancer who were initiating adjuvant AI therapy were enrolled onto a multicentre, randomised clinical trial of exemestane vs letrozole, designed to identify associations between AI-induced change in MPD and single-nucleotide polymorphisms in candidate genes. Subjects underwent unilateral craniocaudal mammography before and following 24 months of treatment. RESULTS: Of the 503 enrolled subjects, 259 had both paired mammograms at baseline and following 24 months of treatment and evaluable DNA. We observed a statistically significant decrease in mean MPD from 17.1 to 15.1% (P<0.001), more pronounced in women with baseline MPD ≥20%. No AI-specific difference in change in MPD was identified. No significant associations between change in MPD and inherited genetic variants were observed. CONCLUSION: Subjects with higher baseline MPD had a greater average decrease in MPD with AI therapy. There does not appear to be a substantial effect of inherited variants in biologically selected candidate genes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Beyond estrogen receptor (ER), there are no validated predictors for tamoxifen (TAM) efficacy and toxicity. We utilized a genome-wide cell-based model to comprehensively evaluate genetic variants for their contribution to cellular sensitivity to TAM. DESIGN: Our discovery model incorporates multidimensional datasets, including genome-wide genotype, gene expression, and endoxifen-induced cellular growth inhibition in the International HapMap lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs). Genome-wide findings were further evaluated in NCI60 cancer cell lines. Gene knock-down experiments were performed in four breast cancer cell lines. Genetic variants identified in the cell-based model were examined in 245 Caucasian breast cancer patients who underwent TAM treatment. RESULTS: We identified seven novel single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with endoxifen sensitivity through the expression of 10 genes using the genome-wide integrative analysis. All 10 genes identified in LCLs were associated with TAM sensitivity in NCI60 cancer cell lines, including USP7. USP7 knock-down resulted in increasing resistance to TAM in four breast cancer cell lines tested, which is consistent with the finding in LCLs and in the NCI60 cells. Furthermore, we identified SNPs that were associated with TAM-induced toxicities in breast cancer patients, after adjusting for other clinical factors. CONCLUSION: Our work demonstrates the utility of a cell-based model in genome-wide identification of pharmacogenomic markers.

RESUMO

A 38 years-old man, who had olfactive schwannoma totally removed, with favorable clinical evolution and no radiological recurrence, suffered from headache and frontal syndrome, seven years after surgery. MRI of the brain showed multiple extra-axial lesions, disseminated, mimicking multiple meningiomas. The surgical strategy consisted in primary removal of the most symptomatic lesion. Histopathological examination after immunohistochemical tests permitted the definitive diagnosis of Rosai-Dorfman disease of the central nervous system. Evolution was still favorable 6 months after surgical removal of the whole lesions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Clinical expression of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is numerous and depends on the immune status of the host. In immunocompromised patients, CMV disease corresponds to reactivation of the virus with tissue damage responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. In immunocompetent adults, primary CMV infection is usually asymptomatic but may rarely result in severe organ damage. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 28-year-old man, considered immunocompetent and without medical history, presenting with a primary CMV infection revealed by a severe protein-losing gastroenteropathy (serum albumin level: 18.9g/L). The CT scan showed a gastro-duodeno-jejuno-ileitis pattern. Upper intestinal endoscopy revealed diffuse ulcerated and congestive gastritis predominantly in the fundus. Histological analysis of the biopsies showed no viral inclusion and no immunohistochemical staining reaction, but a high viral load (5.61 log). Treatment was symptomatic associated with anticoagulation due to the major hypoalbuminemia. The patient slowly recovered, and normal clinical examination and blood tests were observed two months after the onset of symptoms. CONCLUSION: Severe CMV organ involvement in the immunocompetent patient is very rare but potentially serious. Digestive involvement complicated by exudative enteropathy is possible. Evolution is usually favorable without the need for antiviral treatment.

RESUMO

We evaluated the benefits of heat-stable carotenoid-producing Bacillus marisflavi SH8 spores individually and in combination with non-pigmented Bacillus subtilis SH23 spores on growth, colour change, nutritional content, innate immunity, and gut microbiota of white-leg shrimp. White-leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei; n = 30 per tank; 2 tanks per group) were provided feed without (control group) or with SH8, SH23, or mixed spores (total, 1 × 106 cfu/g pellet) for 28 d. The SH8 and SH8-23 combination groups had significantly higher specific growth rates (9.6 and 11.0%), improved red-colour score (4 scores), astaxanthin concentration (1.8- and 2.3-fold), lipid contents (30 and 50%), and superoxidase dismutase activity (8.5 and 12.3%) than that of the control group. Analysis of shrimp's gut microbiome using 16S rRNA metagenome sequencing revealed increased abundance of four useful species and reduced abundance of four harmful species in the combination group than in the control group. Heat-stable Bacillus spore combination improved growth parameters, nutrient content, red-colour score, live counts, and abundance of useful bacteria in the gut of L. vannamei. This is the first study to show the benefits of combining highly heat-stable pigmented and non-pigmented Bacillus spores and their possible mechanisms in a shrimp model.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Although the application of transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography in clinical diagnosis of cerebral vasospasm is popular in clinical practice in Vietnam, available evidence of the predictive value of vasospasm on TCD in the literature was mostly reported from large institutions in developed countries. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate the value of TCD ultrasonography in the diagnosis of vasospasm in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in Vietnam. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a prospective observational study of all aneurysmal SAH patients consecutively admitted to a single center between 2008 and December 2011. TCD and 64-slice computed tomographic angiography (CTA) were used to cerebral vasospasm in SAH patients. RESULTS: 316 patients were analyzed (mean age = 52.97±12.27 years, 52.2% males). There were statistically significant difference rates of the cerebral vasospasm by Hunt and Hess Classification and Fisher classification (p <0.01). The proportion of the patients with cerebral vasospasm who were diagnosed exactly by TCD was 95.2%, while the proportion of the patients without cerebral vasospasm diagnosed exactly was 91.5%. TCD predictive diagnostic value was the highest, with the sensitivity of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.91-0.98), specificity of 0.91 (95% CI: 0.85-0.96), positive predictive value of 0.94 (5% CI: 0.90-0.97) and negative predictive value of 0.93 (95 CI: 0.87-0.97). Hemiplegia was the clinical symptom with the highest diagnostic value with the sensitivity of 0.34 (95% CI: 0.27-0.41), specificity of 0.92 (95% CI: 0.86-0.96), positive predictive value of 0.86 (95% CI: 0.76-0.93) and negative predictive value of 0.49 (95% CI: 0.41-0.54). CONCLUSIONS: Evidence of vasospasm diagnosis on TCD ultrasonography was found with high accuracy. Current study enables to suggest the wide application of TCD in Vietnam health facilities from central to grassroots levels instead of the CTA use.

RESUMO

Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XGC) is a rare form of cholecystitis, characterized by the presence of xanthogranuloma, prominent yellow structures within the gallbladder wall that is very often lithiasic. When XGC presents in its pseudo-tumoral form with occasional adjacent organ involvement, it can mimic gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). The etiopathogenesis of XGC is inflammatory destruction of Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses containing biliary and cholesterol pigments within the gallbladder wall; this leads to a florid granulomatous histiocytic inflammatory reaction. The prevalence ranges from 1.3% to 8.8% of all cholecystectomies and varies from country to country; XGC occurs predominantly in patients over 50 years of age, and is equally distributed between males and females. Its association with GBC remains a topic of debate in the literature (between 0 and 20%). Symptoms are non-specific and generally similar to those of acute or chronic cholecystitis. XGC, when associated with altered health status, leads to the suspicion of GBC. XGC can also come to light due to an acute complication of cholecystolithiasis, in particular, gallstone migration. Imaging by sonography and CT scan is suggestive, but magnetic resonance imaging is more specific. In difficult cases, biopsy may be necessary to eliminate the diagnosis of tumor. In case of pre- or intra-operative diagnostic doubt, the opinion of a hepatobiliary specialty center can be of help. When diagnosis of GBC has been eliminated, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is recommended, although with a high risk of conversion to laparotomy and complications.

RESUMO

Ri chicken is the most popular backyard chicken breed in Vietnam, but little is known about the growth curve of this breed. This study compared the performances of models with three parameters (Gompertz, Brody, and Logistic) and models containing four parameters (Richards, Bridges, and Janoschek) for describing the growth of Ri chicken. The bodyweight of Ri chicken was recorded weekly from week 1 to week 19. Growth models were fitted using minpack.lm package in R software and Akaike's information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used for model comparison. Based on these criteria, the models having four parameters showed better performance than the ones with three parameters, and the Richards model was the best one for males and females. The lowest and highest value of asymmetric weights (α) were obtained by Bridges and Brody models for each of sexes, respectively. Age and weight estimated by the Richard model were 8.46 and 7.51 weeks and 696.88 and 487.58 g for males and for females, respectively. Differences in the growth curves were observed between males and female chicken. Overall, the results suggested using the Richards model for describing the growth curve of Ri chickens. Further studies on the genetics and genomics of the obtained growth parameters are required before using them for the genetic improvement of Ri chickens.

RESUMO

Estuaries are amongst the most productive ecosystems of the land ocean continuum, but they are also under high anthropic pressures due to coastal urbanization. Too sparse observations have hindered the understanding of complex interactions between water quality and estuarine hydrodynamics and biogeochemical transformations. Until now, estuarine modelling studies have mainly focused on temperate estuarine systems in industrialized countries. This study investigates the responses of a tropical estuary to pollution load from a megacity (Ho Chi Minh City, Southern Vietnam) by applying a one-dimensional, biogeochemical estuarine model (C-GEM). The Saigon River Estuary flows through the megacity of Ho Chi Minh (HCMC) and is subject to episodic hypoxia events due to wastewater inputs from urban discharges. Good agreements are found between simulation outputs and observations for tidal propagation, salinity, total suspended sediment, and water quality variables in dry season in Saigon River Estuary. C-GEM reproduces the increases in ammonium, total organic carbon, phytoplankton and dissolved oxygen depletion in the urban section of the Saigon River as an impact of untreated wastewaters from HCMC. The steady-state version of C-GEM also reveals the formation of a pollutant cloud (30-km stretch) resulting from the combined effects of tidal fluctuation and low flushing capacity during the dry season. Furthermore, the quantification of the reaction fluxes simulated by the model demonstrates that nitrification is the main process removing NH4+ from the Saigon River. For the first time in such a type of environment, our study demonstrates the effectiveness of C-GEM at unraveling the complex interplay between biogeochemical reactions and transport in a tropical estuary with a minimized data requirement. This is significant for tropical estuaries in developing countries, where intensive monitoring programs are rare and have thus been rarely the object of modelling investigations.

RESUMO

The hydrological dynamics of the Saigon River is ruled by a complex combination of factors, which need to be disentangled to prevent and limit risks of flooding and salt intrusion. In particular, the Saigon water discharge is highly influenced by tidal cycles with a relatively low net discharge. This study proposes a low-cost technique to estimate river discharge at high frequency (every 10 min in this study). It is based on a stage-fall-discharge (SFD) rating curve adapted from the general Manning Strickler law, and calibrated thanks to two ADCP campaigns. Two pressure sensors were placed at different locations of the river in September 2016: one at the centre of Ho Chi Minh City and one in Phu Cuong, 40 km upstream approximately. The instantaneous water discharge data were used to evaluate the net residual discharge and to highlight seasonal and inter-annual trends. Both water level and water discharge show a seasonal behaviour. Rainfall, including during the Usagi typhoon that hit the megalopolis in November 2018, has no clear and direct impact on water level and water discharge due to the delta flat morphology and complex response between main channel and side channel network and ground water in this estuarine system under tidal influence. However, we found some evidences of interactions between precipitation, groundwater, the river network and possibly coastal waters. This paper can be seen as a proof of concept to (1) present a low-cost discharge method that can be applied to other tidal rivers, and (2) demonstrate how the high-frequency discharge data obtained with this method can be used to evaluate discharge dynamics in tidal river systems.
